King Kalākaua-- dubbed throughout time as the "Merry Monarch"-- dedicated his life&complicated rule to establishing the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi as an independent power recognized world wide, as well as revitalizing a culture that had been nearly ground to dust under the heel of colonization. Hula-- once publicly outlawed as a deeply spiritual&religious act by the missionaries who spearheaded the war to destroy our culture-- was brought back to the public consciousness by the King, an incredibly accomplished dancer himself.
The Merry Monarch Hula Festival is the most well-known portion of his legacy, and is celebrated by kānaka&lovers of hula all over the world.
Mahalo nui loa, Ke Aliʻi Kalākaua.

Hula Kahiko, 11x14, Digital 2023
This image depicts hula kahiko. The word “kahiko” literally means “old” or “primitive.” Hula Kahiko, therefore, is known as the old style of hula. It follows tradition strictly in its instruments, style of song, and clothing/adornments. The style itself is also very different from contemporary styles of hula. The dances and the chants that they accompany typically tell ancient stories about the land, the chiefs, the ocean, the gods, and goddesses, etc.

No actually, I feel horrible when I say this but I really just love watching it for the fashion. Palaka, kahiko and auana dresses and just the accessorizing to me is so beautiful 🤩🤩🤩 like finding which flower lei works best, or should we use pūpū or seeds. What kind hair style work? which colors compliment which? And the kahili are just so beautiful 😭😭😭😭
Don't feel bad bc I didn't grow up doing hula, so I don't know all the terminology for things. But that's completely valid bc the fashion is to DIE FOR. The flowers and the lei po'o give me absolutely life, esp with the colors UGH Men's kahiko also looks good, but the auana tends to be the same??? I haven't watched all the shows, but I notice that there's not much variety for men's auana...
Omg yesss the kahili 😭😭😭🥹🥹😍😍

Dream Journal
This dream kinda shook me when I woke up.
It started out in a team of underwater explorers, maybe scuba divers, and they were charting some creepy abandoned tunnel in a underwater facility of sorts. Then they find a big door that opens to the surface, fortunately because someone’s oxygen tank is depleted. They begin to open it but a system warns them that there is a massive creature outside the door trying to get in. The door is so slow and loud to open and when it finally opens it is pitch black and everyone has their lights out. They flash them on and this metallic shark creature is peering at the crew. It attacked and (presumably) I am sitting in a movie theatre and my family and I wanna watch the movie again, which was the whole underwater thing I guess. So we go into the lobby and there is a Hula Kahiko (Hawaiian fire dance) performance going on. Then we all sit (it’s this weird lobby theatre space) and let the movie begin. It goes the same till the door opens and the lights flash on but there is no cyborg shark! They crew climbs through the massive tunnel and it gets smaller and smaller but the surface approaches and it leads to a tropical island of the coast of a bigger mass of land. The crew turns out to be three or four gods of some sort. Unsure. All of a sudden a massive earthquake happens, two of the gods are flung into the ocean and once sacrifices themselves to save another and drowns. Then my memory fades as seeing the depths of the ocean woke me up.

The Best Luau on Oahu: An Unforgettable Hawaiian Experience
A Journey Through Polynesia
The Polynesian Cultural Center, located in Laie on Oahu's North Shore, is more than just a venue for a luau; it is a living museum that showcases the diverse cultures of Polynesia. When you attend the PCC Luau, you embark on a journey through six Polynesian islands: Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Fiji, and Aotearoa (New Zealand). Each island village at the center offers authentic demonstrations and interactive activities, allowing visitors to delve deep into the traditions and daily lives of Polynesian peoples.
The Ali'i Luau: A Feast Fit for Royalty
The highlight of any visit to the PCC is the Ali'i Luau. best oahu luau Named after Hawaiian royalty, this luau is a grand celebration that reflects the splendor and hospitality of ancient Hawaiian chiefs. The evening begins with a warm aloha greeting and a traditional lei welcome, setting the stage for a night of wonder and enchantment.
As guests are seated in the lush tropical surroundings, they are treated to the melodic sounds of Hawaiian music and the graceful movements of hula dancers. The culinary experience is a feast for the senses, featuring a lavish buffet of traditional Hawaiian dishes. Staples like kalua pig, cooked in an imu
(underground oven), lomi lomi salmon, poi, and haupia (coconut pudding) are complemented by an array of fresh salads, tropical fruits, and mouthwatering desserts. The kalua pig, with its smoky and tender meat, is often the star of the show, highlighting the ancient Hawaiian cooking techniques that have been passed down through generations.
Cultural Performances and Storytelling
What sets the PCC Luau apart from others on the island is its commitment to authenticity and education. Throughout the evening, guests are not only entertained but also educated about the rich cultural heritage of Hawaii and Polynesia. The luau features a variety of performances that tell the stories and legends of the islands through song, dance, and traditional rituals.
One of the most captivating aspects of the PCC Luau is the participation of the performers. Many of them are students from the nearby Brigham Young University-Hawaii, who bring their own cultural backgrounds and personal stories to the performances, adding a layer of authenticity and passion that is palpable. The fire knife dance, a thrilling spectacle from Samoa, and the hauntingly beautiful hula kahiko (ancient hula) are just a few highlights that leave guests in awe.
The Ha: Breath of Life Show
No visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center would be complete without experiencing "Ha: Breath of Life," a breathtaking evening show that follows the luau. best oahu tour This theatrical production takes the audience on an epic journey of birth, life, death, and rebirth, woven through the narrative of a Polynesian family. With over 100 performers, dramatic special effects, and an emotional storyline, "Ha: Breath of Life" is a visual and auditory masterpiece that encapsulates the spirit of Polynesia.
