Sakura Haruno fic recs: ANBU

AHHHH!!!! I love ANBU fics, especially when they involve Sakura. It was such a cool concept, which was unfortunately never fully expanded upon. However, our lack of knowledge regarding the shadow corps allows for some really cool fic ideas since authors can take creative liberty on the structure and workings of the division.

In my opinion, Sakura had the most potential out of team 7 to join ANBU (at least more than Naruto). It's all about being discreet and efficient and although she wasn't strong during og, she possessed abilities that would be valuable for this. Her clever mind, chakra control, and genjutsu potential would've made her a good fit. Naruto was too flamboyant and Sasuke was too reckless and cocky, but this is just my take. However, with her new skill set from her training with Tsunade, I don't think she would be able to go down that path anymore.

Kakashi is a hateful turd and Sakura is spiteful! I hate this ship and I'm not a big fan of Kakashi here, but boy is this fic good. One of the best character developments I've read for Sakura and she certainly becomes of force to be reconned with. The ANBU lore in Masks is absolutely phenomenal and I love the whole system that is put into place as it adds for some drama (lol). Also, can we talk about how awesome crow summons are????

After the Forest of Death, Sakura comes to realize that being weak is no longer an option. However, she finds that change is sometimes painful and that truth doesn't always come easy. Luckily, she'll have some help along the way.

It's been a while since I've read Five Kingdoms for the Dead, but I just remember it being absolutely great! I'll be honest, I found a lot of the mind stuff pretty confusing at times, but it was still enjoyable. Also, some great characters are utilized in this fic such as Neji, Sai, and Itachi. Makes me really wish that we saw more of Sakura and Neji working together in Naruto since I think they compliment each other quite well.

Trials of Change - Espoiretreves || ao3 || gen || time travel AU || complete

Haruno Sakura made a promise. Looking in the eyes of her Shisou and the reanimated Hokage, she took on the most important mission of her life. Go back in time and try to prevent the 4th Shinobi War. Now, Sakura is back to her 5-year-old body, with all the knowledge and haunting memories of the future. She vows to keep her precious people safe and stop certain events from happening, without altering the timeline too much. The trials her emotions and logic put her through have her questioning her very existence, but for the sake of peace, she has to push forward. No matter what.

Trials of Change is actually apart of a time travel series and I have to say that it is probably one of the best of the genre! Now, Sakura is not in ANBU here, but she works very closely with team Ro (Kakashi's ANBU team) and it's a huge part of the story, so I'm choosing to count it anyway. I really adore all of the worldbuilding and backstories going on here in addition to the fact that there are breaks. Yes, the story keeps moving, but there are other things going on, like playdates, and not just Sakura trying to save the world. Also, if you love Shisui then definitely check this out since he has a huge role and his and Sakura's friendship is just so precious.

After Sakura's first team, consisting of the graduating class's "expendables," dies, she joins team 7 and faces backlash along her shinobi journey. Sakura doesn't join ANBU until the later chapters so fair warning that there isn't too much content in that regards (unless it updates). Nonetheless, Sakura views ANBU as vital to her career as it offers her the highest clearance she can get. Gaining her opportunities for information her civilian-born status didn't allow her privy to.

No one seemed to find it odd when little Haruno Sakura threw herself smack dab in front of a Chidori and Rasengan. Not even Kakashi stopped to wonder.(He really should have.)

The story of how Sakura came to be the sixth hogake despite all of the challenges thrown her way. I especially love Sakura's drive in addition to the political aspects. However, be warned that Kakashi is an absolute HATER (in the beginning), but he gets better! The Sixth Shadow is extremely long and I only just recently got to Sakura's introduction to ANBU, so I can't say too much in that regard.

Sakura got up and didn’t bother brushing the dirt from her dress. She had a feeling she was about to get even dirtier.She looked at the memorial stone one last time, memorizing the characters without even realizing she was doing it. It would serve from that moment on as a reminder of her determination. She wouldn’t let Naruto and Sasuke join the names carved on that stone.That was her nindo.

Sakura's growth throughout Daughter of Fire is great and realistic all while pointing out aspects from the original series which were flawed and dare I say misogynistic. I struggled a bit in the beginning to justify her abilities, but overall the story is really well done and the ANBU aspects are quite intriguing.

when eighteen-year-old, post-war Sakura is thrown back into her tiny, pre-Academy body, she makes a decision. she'd had a childhood once already, and this time, she's more interested in Not Dying when the inevitable shit hits the proverbial fan. so she will work harder, care less, kill more, and smile when she's done.and hey, if she ends up reviving an extinct nature transformation to attract the most corrupt, power-hungry man from her timeline, all the better for her, right?

Such a unique take on a time travel AU and Cut the Head Off the Snake executes it perfectly. Sakura decides that her first order of business is to infiltrate ROOT and that's exactly what she does. Sai, Shin, and Shisui are all great characters and team Ro is present as well. Very good!

Flowers only bloom just before they wilt When Sakura loses her fight against Ino in her Chuunin exams, she questions her ability to ever become a kunoichi, too weak to protect herself, let alone her village One wrongful promotion later and Sakura gets a second chance in the shape of a mysterious new teacher who against all odds is willing to put her faith in a young girl with potential and a willingness to fight. Or- a fix-it inspired fic where Sakura grows to be the powerhouse she was destined to become.

Flowers is a newer series (which has recent updates) and I love it! Critiques are made towards the medical ninja training, which I believe needed to be discussed and it's refreshing to see. In most ANBU fics I've read, Sakura is immediately put onto the strongest team, but here it's a bit different. She begins on a demolition squad, which not only suits her skill set quite well, but is a realistic approach to how she would be introduced to the corps. Anyway, it's one of my favorite reads at the moment and I really like where the story is going.

Despite her efforts to grow stronger however, she finds the world isn't as black and white as it looks and that some truths are easier to hide than others.

I don't remember Equinox very well, but I love most works by this author sooo. Anyway, Itachi stays in Konoha and instead it's Sasuke that goes rougue. Sakura, Naruto, and Shikamaru are newly joined ANBU members and all placed on a team with Itachi and things go from there.

Sakura is probably one of my all time favorite fics because the emotions are just spectacular. The story is pretty heavy on ANBU and ROOT aspects, which I always enjoy, but I wouldn't say it's a major focus. However, there is an emphasis on the unfair treatment towards kunoichi. Anyway, the characterizations and storytelling are beautifully done. Please share this author some love.

New Kakashi x Sakura fic idea absolutely rotting my brain. Got a little down. Will it be a long one-shot? Multi chapter? A few k or massive? No idea.

Plot that won't let me go: while Sasuke and Naruto battle Kaguya, Kakashi and Sakura somehow get chucked 25 years on the past just before Sakumo killed himself. They don't know if it's some warped version of the Infinite Tsukuyomi or real time travel. As they can't do anything either way, their only option is forward. What will happen? Will they change things or live in the woods?

Is it time travel again? Yes. Is that all I'm capable of? Idk honestly maybe. I'm a little obsessed, I think. This is like my 5th time travel. 😩 The ending will for sure be open ended I think. Is it time travel? Was it all a dream? The world may never know.

A quick question to the Kakasaku fandom:

Why most of you people want to ship them when Sakura is a child?? Or only being capable of imagining them in very weird and disturbing situations? I just saw a post on Twitter about a fanart that involved abuse* like how disturbing is that?? WHY do you think this is interesting??

Seriously, with so much talent to draw and write, you still choose the worst scenarios to put the characters, and the funny thing is most of y’all say the canon couple of Sasusaku is problematic when you do far worst things with Kakasaku. It only makes you look hypocritical and that’s why I understand why a lot of people say the Kakasaku fandom is disgusting, because most of the work I’ve seen out there involves fanarts of them in disturbing and problematic situations.

I’m new to the fandom, but lately I’ve been so disappointed because until now I couldn’t find a single fanfic or fanart that doesn’t mischaracterize the characters or doesn’t involve them around weird stuff.

This is actually pushing me away from the ship instead of enjoying it.

I was so excited I just counted the number of Untitled documents and didn't read the ones with actual names. Can I ask about Art therapy, too (if no one else does)?

Art therapy is one I started about 4 years ago where Sakura has opened her child mental hospital and finds sukea on her list of patients.

She walks into the room to find Kakashi, fresh from his hokageship sitting at one of the small tables

The story explores Kakashi's after; he's done literally everything he can for his country, for his people and now that he's on the other side of it, how is he going to cope with the things he's seen and done.

And Sakura, the person he trust to help him through it all.

It's a story about coming to terms with yourself. New beginnings.

But it's not a love story. At least, not a kakasaku one.

I paused writing to work on Mago and the Gutsy Shinobi. And then time got away from me. But I do plan to go back to it in Q1 of this year.

In Defense of KakaKahyo

Okay, first tons of spoilers ahead for those who've never read the novels, so read at your own risk.

So I've always found shippings and fandoms to be interesing. I say ship who you like, you do you boo. Since becoming a Naruto fan, well, Kakashi fan, I've seen KakaGai, ObiKaka, KakaRin, ObiKakaRin, KakaYama, KakaShizu,KakaSaku, KakaIru, Kakashi x OC, and and everybody has their reasons.

Personally, I do adore KakaKahyo. And someone actually asked me why??! I shouldn't have to defend myself, but hey why not. Granted, it's not the most common ship. And also, the only way people will know about Kahyo is if they read the canon novel, Kakashi Hiden: Lightning in the Frozen Sky. Other than canonically being the only love interest that Kishi has ever given Kakashi (they did him dirty by putting it in the novel only and making it be the only novel never animated, but I digress...), I think they're adorable and a perfect match of power, tension, and mixed up feelings. They have a boy meets girl, boy falls in love/lust with girl at first sight, girl tries to kill boy and everybody else, boy saves girl and the world and puts girl in jail but both still have feelings- kind of relationship.

People are like, but he wasn't serious about her and I'm like did you read the book? Read it, because as that song says, that boy got it bad!

When they meet: "In the confusion, their eyes met. Flowing, curly hair, slightly parted lips, large, moist eyes open in surprise—time stopped for a moment, and the world, to Kakashi, was this woman and nothing else."

When they fall out of the ship - he just wants to make sure she is safe!: "Even as he was being blown up practically horizontally, Kakashi tried to search out Kahyo somehow."

He can't get her out of his mind, even as he's falling to his death: "The power line finally slipped from his hand, and the last thing Kakashi saw as he tumbled to the earth with Guy was —one woman.” The woman in the long blue dress"...."Dammit… Closing his eyes, he saw Kahyo in that blue dress."

He just wants her to be okay and can't think straight until he knows she is: "The ice created with Kahyo’s Earth Chain Ice bulged out from the sealed gap, threatening to overflow. She was safe. As he breathed a sigh of relief, Kakashi focused his mind."

Then my girl is up there sending him perfumed letters! Perfumed people! That's not just casual hey, how you doing? You're not sending your casual friend or neighbor perfumed letters. And not in the book, but in the game, he sends her jewelry to say "thank you." And gets all kinds of flustered when talking about it.

All I get from this is that when Mr. Hatake falls for that rare someone, he falls HARD and FAST.

And it works if you think about it. He's always afraid of losing those he loves so doesn't want to get close to people. Well, hello, she's not going anywhere! She's not in public, she's not in danger, she's safe because she's confined to one place and she controls that place. He always knows she's safe. She is a safe space for him.

Granted, there's the criminal element. Something about her being a criminal and he's the one that put her in jail and him being Hokage so there'd be dissonance of some kind or another. People say it wouldn't work out becasue he's Hokage and she's a prisoner. Kakashi has never been the most ethical person. He's no angel. Also, they apparently openly communicate as she sends him letters and he writes to her as well (at least in the game). And being that the other Kage visit her, there's no reason he can't. So, he has open access to her. He doesn't see her as a prisoner and neither do the other Kage. She's just seen as the new warden of Hozuki castle. And he's pardoned just about everybody major he's ever put in jail - Sasuke, Kabuto, Orochimaru, for example, and then in Sasuke's books, Kakashi pardons some more criminals because they were deemed useful. He pardoned so many people, Konoha was gaining a reputation for being soft on crime. So, it's a possibility he pardons her at some point.

Anyway, it's not a common or popular ship, though is ironically the most canonical that Kakashi has ever experienced in terms of romance and gushy love, but regardless, I adore Kakashi and Inmate #31707 Kahyo. I mean, I like KakaYu(gao) too, but that's another post.

I mean this goes without saying. oh my god. ohhh my goddd. mid-year 2023 was the moment everything changed and I started considering things for myself that I would have never thought of doing before. between oct-dec, I have gotten my first tattoo, my ears repierced, my nose pierced, and two (technically three?) more tattoos before christmas ?? I have never felt so pretty. 🥺

get snatched. okay, so since 2020 I have been on a weight loss journey and I'm currently in a plateau. I know I have to push myself harder to get to where I want to be, and I know I can do it!

So my magpie brain had once again a new fanfic idea. On October 10th right after Minato sealed the Kyuubi, Kumo and Iwa decide to make a surprise visit and invade. It goes as expected. In its wake follows death & destruction, and the surviving Konoha-nin scatter all over Fire Country trying to survive. Featuring a really pissed off Haruno clan with a very confused time traveling Sakura, a surprising amount of seals and a Kakashi who has an even a worse time than in canon. Not to mention many other people making guest appearances. Timeline may be wobbly. I have a few scenes I want to write, but this does not make a story. So if you like this and want to send me prompts or questions to hopefully keep my brain on track (and the serotonin high) it's much appreciated.

Have a very long snippet of Kakashi being bamf under the cut. Ps. this will most likely end up being Kakasaku if this is not your cup of tea, sorry (not sorry).

Ino takes a step back, easily twisting out of the path of the incoming shuriken, only losing a few strands of her hair to their sharp blades. Shikaku is so damnably proud of her. It steals his breath — or it’s the knowledge that the little girl he raised was about to die in front of his eyes, and he is helpless to do nothing but watch. Her plan is working. Every time she evades his attacks with just a swish of her hips, his form gets worse, his openings more obvious, too enraged by her apparent casual dismissal of his prowess.

Ino has seen the aftermath of being left alone with that monster. She will never allow herself to be one of his playthings, and if there is even a chance she can drag him to the shinigami with her, she will to do everything in her power to make it happen.

The rest of the Iwa and Kuma shinobi are too entertained, too secure in their numbers and supremacy to see death coming to one of their own. Shikaku prays they won’t see the trap until it’s too late for Ginjo to escape it.

With a mocking laugh and a flip of her hair, Ino dances out of the way of a few more shuriken. Ginjo gives an enraged snarl, his teeth bared, and lunges forward with a kunai in hand, furious that she denies him the satisfaction to see her bleed. Shikaku can see at least five easily exploited openings that even a genin couldn’t miss and he sees the glimmer of deep pleasure in Ino’s eyes. She subtly slides her foot back, about to fall into a bastardized Hyuuga stance, when the ground under her foot gives away. It takes him a fraction of a second to realize that she will never recover fast enough to avoid getting skewered. Maybe she could have salvaged if the ground behind her would have been flat, twisting herself backwards and attacking from a low position even if she would have to sacrifice a broken ankle for it. But there is a tree behind her and twisting around that will take a few more seconds than she has. She will be completely open, with no way to deflect the kunai.

Time slows down. Everything feels muted as he watches death reaching for his daughter.

The whistling of a high-speed projectile pierces through the quiet in his mind. Ino’s back hits the tree and then, with a deceptively soft thumb, a kunai buries itself in the bark next to Ino’s head and everything in Shikaku’s head screeches to a standstill. He has less than a second to take in the ofuda tied to the ring at the end, fluttering in its own slipstream. He can make out its royal blue color, the edges lined in silver. In the center, a vertical white bar with three black dots.

Then Ginjo is an arm’s length away from Ino, weapon’s arm drawn back and then swinging forward for extra momentum. In the next second, a person appears from one heartbeat to the next from nowhere, already in motion. He can make out a haori in the same blue as the ofuda, a white three-by-three square with a corner pointing downwards and a circle surrounding the square. There are few points in his life where Shikaku could feel his brain stuttering to a stop, unable to grasp what he is seeing. This is such a moment.

He knows this symbol (the circle is new), once upon a time this belonged to one of the most respected clans in Konoha (oh by the great tree he misses his home).

It can’t be. It’s impossible. He has been dead for years.

“Sakumo?”

Shikaku hasn’t even finished the first syllable, before the there is a flash of white, the cackling of lightning and the sound of a sword cutting through air. With one arm the figure grasps Ino by her waist, draws her in, effortlessly lifting her out of harm’s way and using the same momentum to behead Ginjo with the sword in the other hand in one fluent movement.

Fugaku makes an odd strangled choking sound.

The white silvery hair is definitely a Hatake trait, but while he can only see the side of the face while the figure carefully lowers Ino down so she can sit against the tree, it looks too young to be not-dead-Sakumo. There is only one other Hatake in recent history who he could be, but they also believed Kakashi to be dead for years, although they never could recover his body for a final confirmation.

Possibly-not-dead-Kakashi’s entrance and his irrelevance to the enemies around them leads to mixed reactions. Some of the Iwa shinobi, notably the older generation, are slowly backing up, spreading themself further apart. The younger generation, especially from Kumo, are strutting forward, too used to certain victory with their superior numbers against the alaways on the run Konoha-nin.

Shikaku can feel his heart hammering in his chest — dum dum dum — like a war drum. He can’t help it. His gaze keeps flickering back to the kunai with the ofuda repeatedly, like it had a magnetic pull.

It’s impossible. There is just no way this is what his mind tries to tell him. They look completely different.

It can’t be.

But there is a gleeful voice in his brain that keeps whispers

But…

But…

But, what if?

Appearing entirely unbothered by the whole situation, probably-not-Sakumo-but-Kakashi rises to his feet and faces them, and that is enough for all remaining uncertainties regarding his person to disappear. He is missing the trademark mask of his youth, but the Sharingan spinning lazily in his left eye leaves no doubt about his identity.

And finally, like trying to make up for missing time, Shikaku’s brain jumps into overdrive. Trying to make sense out of the ghost before him. The teen that he had last seen, who was feral, suicidal, and barely holding onto his sanity due to his grief, is now absent. Instead, there is a young man who looks comfortable in his skin and well fed. There is no gauntness to him, a not uncommon affliction for those who still call themself Konoha shinobi. His clothing is of excellent make and not the civilian kind that offers no protection, especially the hoari with the modified clan insignia. And this, this is something, this is a crucial piece of the puzzle before him, he can feel it. This is not something one does at a whim.

For all that Kakashi looks relaxed, even slightly slouched, there is a glimmer in his eyes that sends an icy shiver down Shikaku’s spine. He feels like he is standing in front of a monster, a predator about to lunge and tear him to shreds.

He feels Suzume-san wriggling next to him, breaking him out of his contemplation. She is trying to twist herself so she can get a glance at Kakashi. Keeping her voice to a whisper, she asks, “What is going on? Sakumo? Sakumo, what? You can’t be serious!?” Only to be interrupted by Fugaku’s muttered, “This doesn’t look good. I really hope he has a plan.”

Jerking his head around, he can see what Fugal already noticed. Some of their more intelligent enemies are creeping to the side, trying to flank him, but more importantly, it would disrupt the flow of the battlefield. Currently, Shikaku and all the other hostages are in a self-contained sphere. Until now, the Kumo-nin and Iwa-nin were more content enough to leave them alone and watch them from afar. If they breach the invisible line separating the hostages from the rest, it will be so much harder for Kakashi to protect them and keep them alive.

In response, Kakashi just pulls the kunai from the tree with his free hand and spins it around his index finger. He smiles lazily at the approaching shinobi, flashing a glimpse of sharp canine.

Fugaku’s voice contains dread when he addresses him. “Shikaku, where are his weapons?” And wasn’t that the question? Besides, the sword in his one hand and the kunai in the other Shikaku couldn’t see anything else on his person, not even ninja wire. Honestly, the whole thing looked more and more like some strange suicide rush, maybe-Hiraishin-kunai or not. Even Shikaku’s fabled mind drew a blank how Kakashi could keep them safe and still kill or at least make the Kumo and Iwa shinobi retreat. One Hiraishin kunai would not be enough that would have even been outside of Minato’s scope of abilities.

This is also an observation shared by Iwa and Kumo, and mocking laughter ripples through the ranks.

“Oy little leaf, you sure you wanna take us all on, with you puny little kunai?” More laughter echoes through the field, then another voice pipes up. “And while you fling that thing around, who keeps your precious comrades safe, that’s all the rage for you leaf eaters, isn’t it?” This time, the laughter is cruel.

Like hell they were going to lie down and just die. All around him he could see his fellow hostages reading themself for battle as futile as it was, bound and drugged as they were. Kakashi made a thoughtful humming sound. “That’s a problem, isn’t it?” He still sounds as if he couldn’t be bothered and Shikaku wants to close his eyes. Instead, he is distracted by the bloodthirsty grin — baring of teeth — Kakashi throws them. Sharp fangs on full display, but what keeps his focus are the little flashes of lighting sparking between the teeth.

There is some choked off laughter to his side. “By the Shodaime, he is still a little dramatic shit.” Shikaku agrees. Still, he would feel better knowing there was some kind of plan going on here. Kakashi takes another step forward and Ino is crouched in the background in a defensive stance, but Shikaku can see how she doesn’t put any weight on her ankle. His attention snaps back to Kakashi when Fugaku becomes taut like a stretched ninja wire.

“What.” Shikaku doesn’t think he’s ever heard the other man so confused.

The mastery of Kakashi’s lightning nature no longer distracts him from noticing that his Sharingan spins faster than normal and Kakashi states, “Let’s change that, shall we?” In a mock thoughtful tone and with that, the three tomoe of his Sharingan morph into an unfamiliar windmill pattern. Fugaku sounds like someone punched the air out of him. Clearly, he has a better idea about what is going to happen, even if he is still in disbelieve about it. Shikaku is cautiously optimistic. Honestly, at this point, everything can only be better than their original fate.

Kakashi utters just one word, “Susanoo.”

For a moment, nothing happens. Shikaku is pretty sure Fugaku has stopped breathing. Then, a gigantic, humanoid head, followed by arms and a ribcage rises from the earth, half skeletal, half armoured, like a vengeful spirit. The Iwa-nin and Kumo-nin have the common sense to fall back rapidly and try to pierce it with long distance attacks.

“Impossible.” It’s more a croak than a word that escapes Fugaku’s lips.

It’s truly monstrous. It’s so big the ribcage surrounds them like a wall. For all that it’s partial see-through and shimmering silver-white, it acts as an impenetrable barrier; nothing goes through. Shikaku agrees, the chakra consumption of that giant must be enormous, to span such a wide area, safely encasing every Konoha-nin. He can’t fathom it.

Abruptly, Kakashi stops spinning the kunai around his index finger. He gives them a fake crinkled eye smile. “Thank you for not running away.”

With a twist of his wrist, he flicks the kunai towards the gathered shinobi. It passes through the construct without a problem and Shikaku wonders if it’s because it’s from the inside or because it’s Kakashi’s kunai. Anticipation curls in his stomach, wondering if he is really going to see the Hiraishin in action again. The Kumo and Iwa-nin are already scrambling out of the path of the kunai and Shikaku fears Kakashi will run out of chakra before he can deal with all the enemy shinobi.

An amused twitch of his lips is the only warning they get. Kakashi makes the Earth Release seal in front of his chest. His tone is vicious, a glacial fury. “Tajū Kunai Kage Bunshin no Jutsu.” In an instant, that lonely kunai transforms into a hailstorm, raining death upon the unsuspecting shinobi.

“Oh no. Oh, no no no no. Please, no.” Fugaku sacks into himself like he has no power anymore to keep sitting on his own strength. “How could you… This is not… What did you do?”

For Shikaku there is only hysterical laughter bubbling in his chest, that of all the hand seals Kakashi used, he used Earth Release a seal that is not even a standard hand seal for justu much less a derivation of the Kage Bunshin no Jutsu.

It is also better known as the Seal of Confrontation.

Kakashi disappears with the crackling of electricity, the smell of ozone and a white flash. Hesitant, relieved laughter ripples through the crowd of the captured Konoha-nin.

There is no escape. It is a massacre.

Kudos to Uchiha Fugaku-sama who successfully looked underneath the underneath. Also, there is technically an in universe reason for Kakashi being able to do all that.
