☀️ Sunlight, Moonlight 🌙

I realised I never shared this here!
I did a simple paint job on this elephant furby. This custom was a commission for one of my followers over on Instagram. They told me they’d named her Kaleidoscope Sky which is such a beautiful name 🥺
I've always thought elephant furbies were perfect for celestial themed customs ✨

You die and you meet God.
She looks at you with her Aspen eyes. Her thousand-edged cutting eyes.
She says HELLO. HELLO AGAIN.
She says THAT WAS QUITE A RIDE THIS TIME, HUH?
She says YOUR EYES ARE SO BEAUTIFUL. THEY ARE ALWAYS SO BEAUTIFUL.
She says WELL? DID YOU DO IT? DID YOU FIGURE IT OUT?
You don’t reply. You are trying to figure out why you are falling and falling and staying still. You are trying to remember how long you have been falling here. You are trying to remember where here even is.
You say who are you?
You say what happened, where am I?
You say my eyes are beautiful? But your eyes… they are so lovely too.
You say figure what out?
She looks again at you with her chimera mountain Aspen eyes.
She sighs.
She turns ThunderBird. Wings a trillion volts of lightning.
You are turned without from within, cells shattering with the pulse of storms.
You choke soundless.
ThunderBird says electric YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW YOU GOT HERE?
ThunderBird says galvanic YOUR DEATH WAS BLESSED, AS THEY ALL ARE.
ThunderBird says voltaic NOW YOU ARE HERE. AT THE END OF YOUR LIFE.
You spin and spin apart. There is only this static in your mouth. You think this is what terror truly tastes like. This thought is soothing to you somehow. You are completely still in this empty void. You are surrounded, thrashing in this cramped filled-to-the-brim space.
You scream but I was so young.
You scream how could I have known to enjoy it more?
You scream but I lived a full life.
You scream oh… I lived.
ThunderBird cradles you in their voltage feathers.
Your breathing leaves you. You wonder if you were breathing this whole time, in this space.
You wonder if you miss it. You cannot remember.
ThunderBird shifts Coyote, yellowed grin all flashing teeth and writhing tongue.
Coyote says laughing IT'S ALL JUST CHAOS ANYWAY.
Coyote says cackling IT'S ALL JUST LIGHT AND DARK AND THE IN BETWEEN.
Coyote says shrieking IT'S WHAT HAPPENS TO EVERYONE. WE LIVE. WE DIE. POOF. NO MORE.
You say yes, well, of course, but how am I -
HERE TALKING TO ME? WELL, ISN'T THAT SOMETHING THEN.
Coyote winks into stars, surrounding, spiraling into a thousand heads of The Divine.
You screech and groan and roar and crawl and writhe and slither and claw and gnash and lash a thousand tails.
Shamash says with the voice of the sun YOU'RE ALMOST DUE. ANY MORE QUESTIONS?
You struggle to remember anything besides this endless aching everywhere.
You gasp my life! What was the point of my life?
You say almost due? Due where?
You say when does this stop?
Bastet says with silken sleek drawl IS THAT ALL YOU HAVE TO ASK? IS IT ALL ABOUT YOU?
You don't remember your name.
Rudra says with obsidian teeth WHAT WAS THE POINT. WELL, I SUPPOSE YOU'LL HAVE TO FIGURE THAT OUT.
You scream a silent scream I don't understand anything!
Prometheus says with flaming song REGARDLESS, THIS IS YOUR STOP.
The Stars that are not quite Stars incandescently chorus SEE YOU SOON.
You blink one last time. Your vision Kaleidoscopes, bends into a thousand ways.
You become Mountain, Fertile Plain, Forest of Evergreen, Desert, The Sea.
You speak to yourself now. There is only yourself.
There has only ever been you in all this soft darkness, all this blinding light.
Here in the Beginning. Here at the end.
The wheat chants GO
The water cries GO
The ice and snow wail, melting. GO
The birds call THE POINT OF IT ALL IS TO CARE
The wilderness whispers CARE ABOUT ANYTHING OTHER THAN YOURSELF.
The Wolves howl I WILL ASK YOU NEXT TIME
The playful Dolphin and innocent Dodo and gentle Elephant and loyal Passenger Pigeon and Ivory-billed Woodpecker and the graceful, forgiving Thylacine moans IF YOU WERE ABLE TO DO IT. IF YOU WERE ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT.
You understand. There are uncountable tears. This is all you are. Water salted from the source. You close your eyes.
You awake, in a body small and gasping for breath, screaming a wordless sound.

elephant in the room (we don’t talk about that)
Robert turned his head, and Aaron couldn’t help the noise of shock he made. Robert looked – well, he looked like he’d gotten the shit kicked out of him, his face a kaleidoscope of purple and red, bruises bright against his pale skin.
or - robert pays aaron a visit and has some revelations about the kind of man aaron’s new husband is to share.
ao3 link
The front door opening unexpectedly didn’t concern Aaron – it was probably John, he was always nipping in and out of the flat, usually because he’d forgotten something – so he was definitely surprised when he came face to face with a Sugden, yes, but not the one he was currently married to.
“Robert,” Aaron shook his head. “What are you doing here?”
It’s not as if Aaron didn’t know Robert would be back in the village – he’d just gotten out of prison after a six -year stint, and a few additional weeks for violating the terms of his license, so it wasn’t as though he had a world of options at his feet: he had his sister, who lived a few doors down in the tiny village they both called home.
He’d tried to mentally prepare himself for the reality of living in the same place as Robert Sugden again – really, he had. Aaron had thought about it more than he should have, arguably, the thought at the back of his mind as he tried to enjoy his honeymoon with John. Safe, reliable, good to him John – the man he’d chosen to marry.
It was just that Robert had this unique ability to get under Aaron’s skin, and even though Aaron knew he’d made the right choice by marrying John, there was a niggling, newfound anxiety at the thought of seeing Robert every single day again.
Robert turned his head, and Aaron couldn’t help the noise of shock he made. Robert looked – well, he looked like he’d gotten the shit kicked out of him, his face a kaleidoscope of purple and red, bruises bright against his pale skin. His expression was stony – none of the openness he’d had the day of the wedding, the clearly visible emotions gone.
“I thought you might like to see the present my dear brother – your dear husband – gave me,” Robert’s words were dripping in sarcasm, the tone throwing Aaron back ten years in time. He was like the Robert of old, the one Aaron had first fallen for, the conniving, angry, scheming man who had scared him, and intrigued him in equal measure.

go spin the wheel, see where it lands—
Here's the thing about time: it's always running out. He felt it even as a kid, this urgency moving through him, around him. Always just ahead. He'd catch up, if everything else would just slow the hell down. But there are rules, and rule number one is that time tends to be, well, linear. Directional. Things get a bit messy when it's not.
Four seconds. That was rule number two, and the consequences for breaking it are— bad. To put it lightly.
He doesn't exactly have a choice. Or, he does, but if it's between breaking the rules or not, watching everything he loves get ripped away or digging in, claws first— well. He knows a thing or two about fighting dirty.
So, no, it's not a choice. It's immutable, like gravity. Time. A strict progression from cause to effect.
Ekko breaks rule number two.
And the line becomes a circle.
.
He thinks it's a dream, the first time. What else would it be? She fell. She's gone.
She's here now, though. Whole and happy and here, running a hand through her chopped-short hair. That single streak of magenta hits him where it hurts, square in his chest. You can't feel pain in a dream, can you?
"You're back," she says, without looking up. She's lying on her stomach, sketchbook open, a whirling kaleidoscope of color on the page in front of her. "Took you long enough."
"Was I gone?" Ekko says.
She actually laughs at that, the sound filling up his ears, warm and bright. "Benzo was starting to worry, not that he'd ever admit it. Big ol' softie." Her hand flashes, chalk sticks arcing across the page. "You seem to have that effect on people."
He shakes his head. "I don't. I'm not—"
She scribbles faster, fingers stained pink and blue and every shade in between. "You know, for a smart guy, you're kinda dumb."
"Ouch."
"I still like you, though."
This is a nice dream. Maybe the only nice dream he'll have again.
"I miss you," he says, dredging the words up from some sunless space inside him. "I didn't tell you before."
Her hand slows to a stop. From where he's standing, Ekko can only see a few snatches of detail on the page; a fuchsia smile, twin blue braids.
"I'm right here, buster," she says, not looking up. Grinning softly at her hands. "Never left, actually."
The circle wobbles, shifts out of focus. Time and space folding in on each other like paper cranes.
When he blinks, Powder is gone.
.
Too late. It's always, always too late.
.
"It's you," she says, the next time.
They're somewhere green, somewhere he's never been. A part of the Undercity that doesn't exist where he's from, that never existed.
"Uh." He blinks against the sun. "It's me, yeah."
"Seriously?" Beside him on the lawn, she pops up on an elbow, scrutinizing him. "You still don't get what's happening? Sheesh, hopping dimensions really does do a number on the noggin."
Okay, this is a weird dream. Still, as long as he keeps her talking, as long as he has sun on his skin and grass beneath him, he doesn't really care. He'll take weird. He'll take whatever he can get.
"Noggin, right," he laughs. "Synapses. Drunk slugs."
Powder scrunches up her nose like she's trying not to laugh. "Alright, I give. If you wanna dance around the giant elephant in the room, be my guest." She turns her head into her arm, a shield from the sun. Between them, their hands brush in the grass, pinky fingers tangling together. "Next time, though."
Ekko hums, content. More than that— happy. Overflowing with it. Then he frowns. "Wait. Next time?"
Paper cranes, folding in and in and in.
"Dummy," he thinks he hears her say before she disappears.
.
"So when you said 'hopping dimensions', you meant—"
"Yeah."
"And that means—"
"Yeah."
Ekko spins in a circle, arms thrown out wide. "But— how? All of this, the lab, the tech— it shouldn't exist here. Heimerdinger made sure—"
"Hey, you're the genius," Powder says. "I just live here."
Four seconds. He lets it sink in for four seconds—she's whole, she's happy, she's here, at least in this tiny pocket of space and time—before he's crossing the space between them and pulling her into a bruising hug. Her breath puffs out in mild surprise, and then she's hugging him back, arms cinching tight around him. I won't forget this. But he's already started to. He drops his head to her shoulder, breathing her in, every tiny detail. He won't make the same mistake twice.
Her eyes are wet when they untangle. Ekko swipes at his cheek to find that his are, too.
"I'm sorry," he says. "I'm so sorry. I thought I saved you, but it wasn't— I wasn't—"
"Don't," she says fiercely. "Don't do that. Not with me, not here. I meant what I said, okay? You're a good one, Ekko. You don't give up on people. If I'm— if the other me is— then there was nothing you could've done to change it. That was always gonna be how the story ended."
The tears are a river, streaming salt down the slope of his nose and into his mouth. "I was too slow. I'm always too damn slow."
Powder's hands are on his face, her lips kissing the salt from his cheeks, his eyelids. "The boy savior," she murmurs. "It's not your job to save everyone, you know. But I love you for trying."
She's fading, or maybe he is. Time and space, a never-ending anomaly. But there are constants, too, things that keep the universe spinning. Rules worth breaking.
He feels it, this time. It's like someone's scooping out his insides, rearranging his atoms. Like he's being wiped clean, unmade. Hollowed out so that some other him can be stuffed into his skin. Four seconds is all it takes, or maybe four million.
I love you. I love you, too.
.
He tells her for real, when he sees her again.
"I know," she says, elbowing him in the ribs. Her cheeks are dusky-pink. "Following my lead, huh?"
He looks at her, really looks. Every detail; the dainty point of her chin and the dusting of freckles across her nose and her eyes, big and bright and blue.
"Always," he says.
.
Time and space. Paper cranes, folding and unfolding, creasing the lines of reality. Some rules can't be broken, but they can bend a little.
Here's one: when you die, you stay dead.
.
He must be dreaming. She's standing right in front of him, in this dimension, on this plane of existence, real and whole and here. Her hair is still short, all of it blue.
Four seconds. He holds his breath for four seconds, and then: "Jinx."
"Hey, buster," she says.

Simon never thought retirement would appeal to him. The routine, the camaraderie, the purpose; he’d never envisioned a life where he’d be content to leave it all behind. But when Johnny got shot just a couple months after their wedding, barely surviving and unable to keep his spot with the 141, Simon hadn’t hesitated to resign and focus on nursing his dove back to health.
Now, three years and countless hours of physical therapy later, Johnny is doing much better. He’s never going to be fully back to how he had been before, and they’ve both accepted that; he’s alive and able to keep up with Simon and the twins, what more could they ask for?
The twins. Bright eyes, brighter smiles, and hands down the center of the mens’ world. The day the adoption had gone through was the second time joy had ruined Simon’s eyeliner, an accessory he never thought he’d care for but found himself rather enjoying, much to Johnny’s smug amusement. Ava and Derek, nearly four years old and currently looking at the elephants at the zoo like they’re eldritch horrors just waiting for the kids to let their guard down to pounce. Neither Simon nor Johnny had ever seen either child so wary before, and it was a struggle to keep from laughing at the frankly impressive side eyes being thrown in the direction of the enclosure. Like dogs hearing the word “bathtime”, ready to bolt at the first sign of movement in their direction.
Some animals go over better than others: the penguins are an absolute hit, Derek loves the giraffes while Ava looks ready to cry, and the reverse occurs in the reptile and bug house; both laugh themselves nearly sick at the monkeys, watch the big cats with quiet awe, look at the flamingos like they’re aliens, and the hippopotamus is met with a resounding *absolutely not*. It was mostly okay until it opened its mouth, then both kids had to have a break at the petting zoo area and an ice cream to calm them down. The day is long and tiring in the best way, much better than either Simon or Johnny had hoped for. There are no tantrums, few tears, and neither kid seems too affected by their missed nap, the excitement of the day keeping them alert and happy. Everything’s going quite well, maybe even a little too well, but neither man is willing to voice it lest they jinx themselves. Of course, the universe has other plans, and as Simon is paying for the toy each child picked out in the gift shop, he hears a familiar wail and curses under his breath, hurriedly grabbing the bag and receipt and thanking the cashier before walking quickly outside where Johnny had gone ahead with the little ones to get them settled in the car after picking out their toys so they wouldn’t have to wait in line too.
The sight that greets him has him frozen in his tracks for a moment, blinking in sheer befuddlement. Johnny’s knelt on the ground, two small bags of Cheerios scattered around the trio, Derek clinging to his side and absolutely losing it bawling as Johnny holds Ava back by the hood of her jacket, their daughter fighting his hold and screaming, apparently entirely prepared to 1v1 a peacock while her brother sobs behind her. Shaking off his surprise, Simon makes his way over and crouches down with them, gently extricating Ava from Johnny’s grip to give his husband the ability to comfort the crying boy clinging to him. Turning her so she’s facing him instead of the bird she looks ready to pluck and fry herself like an overgrown ostentatious chicken, he speaks in a calm and steady voice to guide her to calm down, to help her regulate her emotions. “Hey, let’s take a sec, deep breaths, love. Take a couple deep breaths with me, that’s it, there we go. Gettin’ worked up won’t solve anything, everything makes more sense with a clear head.”
Once he’s confident she’s not about to wring the neck of the nearest kaleidoscope goose, he lets go of her to start gathering the remaining cheerios that haven’t already been scooped up by the demonic feathered vacuum. “What happened, bug?” He asks her, keeping an eye on her in case she changes her mind and decides that violence is, in fact, the answer.
In the most indignant, incensed tone he had ever heard from his normally sweet and kind little girl, Ava snapped, “Flamboyant fuckin’ twat stole Derek’s snack!”
For the second time in five minutes, Simon freezes for a moment to try to adjust to the situation. He can hear Johnny poorly suppressing wheezing, choked off giggles behind him, and even Simon himself is struggling to keep a lid on his own amusement. “Well,” he mutters under his breath, “guess we haven’t been as good at watching our language around them as we thought…”

The Mind Readers
“Wait, so you can hear each other’s thoughts?” said Pete, looking over Artie’s shoulder on the Farnsworth screen.
“No!” said Myka.
“Yes,” said Helena. “Several voices, in Myka’s case. All rather critical of her, which I find sad. Is one of them your childhood piano teacher?”
“Helena...”
“Actually, it’s a very interesting experience, if rather an overwhelming one,” went on Helena, “I need merely mention, say, John Keats and I can ‘see’ (in my mind’s eye, you understand) a book of his poetry. It has a red binding and... ah, Myka is searching for quotes for an essay. I can actually read the poems! Your ability to recall detail is truly remarkable, Myka. She’s in university...”
“Helena!” hissed Myka furiously.
“... Oh, there’s a plan of the university in my head now. I could now find my way around the place without error—”
“HELENA, STOP!” said Myka, and Helena, jolting slightly at her voice, stopped.
“Yes, thank you Agent Wells,” said Artie, “If we can get on with—”
“College days, amiright?" interrupted Pete. “Away from home, staying up all night, making out with as many... Aw, but Mykes wouldn’t have had a boy-crazy phase, not around all those books—”
Myka reddened, and Helena said “Who’s Madeline Ferrero?”
“Nobody!” said Myka too quickly
“Oh, she’s lovely!” said Helena. “That skin—! And lovely brown eyes.”
Pete almost pushed Artie off the Farnsworth’s screen. “Wait, what!? College Myka was makin' it with girls!? Mykes! Although now I think about I guess it makes a lot of—”
“PETE!” said Myka.
“No, I don’t think so.” said Helena, disappointed. “I think Myka just sat behind her in... a law lecture, perhaps? Yes. And looked at her. Quite often. Did you ever actually speak to her?” she asked. Myka’s head was now in her hands. “She didn’t,” reported Helena. “Oh, but she knew Madeline’s schedule though! When she had lunch, when—”
“Yes, well as interesting as this all is IF WE CAN GET BACK TO OUR ACTUAL JOBS NOW” said Artie, pointedly turning his Farnsworth away from Pete.
Myka dropped her hands and sat up. "Thank you."
“Wait,” said Helena, holding up a hand, “Did your father really say those horrible things about your admiration of Madeline? Or is that... Oh, it’s your father in your head.”
“Her what where now?” said Pete’s voice.
“She has her father constantly commenting on her in her head. What an unpleasant man. Myka, you know none of that is true, don’t you?”
Myka gritted her teeth. “Please, everyone, can we leave my mind alone and get back to the artifact?”
“Who’s James Thurber?” asked Helena. “Oh, I see. Word association. And, of course,” she added hastily as she took in her partner’s expression, “Myka is quite correct: we ought to concentrate on fixing this. As fascinating an experience as it is.”
“Yes, children, the potentially very dangerous device,” said Artie. “The one that will probably kill you if we don’t identify it. That one. Myka, you said you were each in contact with the coils—”
“Wait, wait, so Mykes, can you hear H.G?” asked Pete, popping up on the screen behind Artie again. “What’s her mind like? Hot? Is it hot?”
“No! I mean, no, I can’t hear H.G,” said Myka. “Or... I can’t hear her voice in my mind or see what she’s thinking about... I’m not sure she thinks in images... but her mind’s a.. a kaleidoscope of ideas, all coming and going and changing really fast. Each idea she has seems to branch into five more, or turn into mist before I can grasp it, and it’s, it's like I’m having the ideas and, um, it’s a lot actually.” She rubbed her temples. “Can you just stop thinking for a moment!” she pleaded, "Or just stick to one thing..." Suddenly intent, Myka pointed a finger at Helena. “Okay, don’t think about an elephant!”
Helena looked startled. “Alright.”
There was a pause then Myka gaped. “How are you doing that!?”
“Doing what?”
“Not thinking about an elephant!”
Helena gasped at the injustice. “You told me not to think of an elephant!”
“Yes! Because you’re supposed to... Alright then, do think of an elephant!”
They stared at each other. “But that's not an elephant, that’s just a list of facts about elephants!” said Myka in despair.
“We can’t all conjure up every memory like we're there again,” said Helena. “Oh, Myka went on an elephant ride when she was nine! Where were you? Ah, at the Denver zoo. And look at... is that Tracy? What a darling dress— Oh, do hush up Artie.”
Artie managed to look even more exasperated. “I haven’t managed to get a word into this innane—”
“Not you, Artie-in-Myka’s-head. He’s getting impatient and making Myka anxious.”
Artie brought his face very close to the screen. “Well good for Artie-in-Myka’s-head. He sounds like my sort of guy. I should give him a job”
“Yes, wouldn't that be lovely,” said Helena, “But let us consider this machine.”
Myka had begun cradling her head. “You've started doing it again. Examining the problem. How can you live with all this... chaos? I can't keep up.” she muttered.
Helena patted her shoulder. “Poor Myka. I promise we’ll work this out. I suppose my mind is rather magnificent, it must be quite overwhelming for you.”
Myka bristled, opening her mouth to retort, then stilled. “Oh! She has a theory. (Well, three theories so far, but this is her best guess because of the late-Nineteenth Century design of the machine)... ”
“Artie, have you heard of Andrew Webber?” asked Helena.
“Webber!” Artie became more animated. “Yes, that makes sense! He was a disciple of Carl Von Reichenbach, who first proposed the theory of the odic force—”
“A mystical energy that animates all living things?” said Myka frowning at Helena, “Really?”
“No! I don’t know! It wasn’t my theory!” protested Helena.
“Animates living things, and causes phenomena such as hypnotism and thought transference!” went on Artie, ignoring them. “Webber built several machines in an attempt to channel and store the odic force. This may very well be one of them.”
“I have some... I mean Helena has... six... seven different ideas as to how we could reverse the effect. Eight ideas HELENA THAT ONE WILL ABSOLUTELY GET YOU KILLED.”
“Please stop that,” said Helena wearily.
“Good," said Artie, "See what you can do. I’ll start looking into—”
Myka gasped and pointed a finger at Helena. “She wants to take the machine apart once we get it back to the Warehouse! She was going to offer to do the paperwork and then work on the machine overnight!”
Helena rolled her eyes. “Well, I was assuming we would want to know—”
“That’s a lie! She was about to lie!”
Helena narrowed her eyes and glared at Myka.
“It’s gone all quiet in there now,” reported Myka.
“Hey H.G, don’t think about making out with Mykes!” called Pete from somewhere beyond Artie's shoulder.
"Very well then, I shan't," said Helena smugly.
Even with the sepia tones of the Farnsworth screen Myka’s sudden flush was obvious, and Helena brightened up. “Oho!” she said, “Well! I shan't! Yes, what a wonderfully vivid imagination—!”
“Right, goodbye.” said Artie and the Farnsworth went blank.
Silly stuff based on the B&W discord conversation tonight, about how people think differently from each other without realising it.

Mononoke Movie
I wasn't sure what to expect with this movie, but the fact I dove down a rabbit hole of potential lore, including the different medicine sellers, was not it. The surprises are pleasant, but I truly wish to know more. This character and series has me invested now.
I've already talked some about both Ayakashi and it's Spin-off Mononoke. If interested on my thoughts, mostly about Mononoke, you find it here (beware some spoilers). If not, long story short - I thought Ayakashi was alright, I thought the Bakeneko arc was the best arc, then watched Mononoke, and now here I am, lol.
Disclaimer: Spoilers for the first Mononoke movie - The Phantom in the Rain. However, there will be little to no spoilers concerning Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales and Mononoke (2007). Also note, when I say original series, I mean Mononoke (2007). When I mention Bekeneko, I specifically mean the arc from Ayakashi.

So, yes, this thing. First off, I am very happy they kept the animation style and look of the original Mononoke series. The style of the 2007 series was one of the reasons my interest was peaked in not only looking into Mononoke, but also watching Ayakashi as whole (even if I've heard people say you only need to watch the bakeneko arc for that).
This style is still beautiful, they kept the vibrant colors and lines, and even the paper textures. They didn't have to do all that, especially for something that was from early 2000's, but they did and the dedication is appreciated. However, it is a little different from the original. The colors seem much more vibrant and bold, whereas in the 2007 series and Bakeneko they had a more muted tone. I'm not surprised by this given how much older the original series is (almost 20 years old, huzzah -_-), so it was probably just limitations back then. Granted, even then the original series was still very colorful and bright with its colors. This is just an observation, though, not a nitpick. It is more or less the same visual style.
Before I point out the elephant in the room, or rather the seller, let me just touch and talk on the main story a moment.
Much like the original series, the movies touches on some fairly dark themes. Despite the rating on netflix being 14+, this movie takes place in an Ooku, a place where many women are gathered to be concubines for the emperor. Okay, there's actually a lot more to an Ooku than that, but it's a lot of information and I tend to ramble enough as is, so I won't get into it here. Just know that's what the basic function, at least, became by the time period the movie takes place in.
A number of the characters were very interesting here, especially when we are given glimpses of what the other women in the Ooku gave up before working there. The dynamic between Asa and Kame is very interesting. I like how at first, Kame was willing to give up what's important to her for a chance at a better status, but Asa wanted to hold onto what was dear to her. The fact this got turned around at the end was an interesting development, and I wonder how that might affect them later if we see them again in the second movie. Mugitani and Awashima giving up a ball and kaleidoscope respectively make me wonder what they were like before the Ooku. Clearly they were characters with a more carefree lifestyle, so in a way it's sad to see them lose themselves as they did.
I wish we'd gotten more about some of the other side characters, such as Fuki, Saburoumaru, and even that Hokuto man, but I suppose I'll have to wait for the next movie.
The horror elements, while a bit toned down I feel compared to the original series, are still very catching. This movie was definitely more geared towards action, but I thought that was fun. Especially seeing Kon Kusuriuri in action. The animation was stunning, and the scene where the characters were falling down the well was a great way to display how they had all let go of something valuable, important, but Asa hadn't lost everything yet. I loved Kon and how he first, uh, "subtly inserted" himself into the Ooku. Yes. Very subtle. I don't even think Ri could be more subtle than that. Nope.
Oh, yes, the local medicine seller.
So, apparently, this medicine seller is different from the series medicine seller (Kon and Ri, respectively). It's a whole thing, and hopefully it'll be better elaborated on in the next movie or even the third, but I found nacch-an's crash course post very helpful, they even have links to source material for extra learning! (Thank you! I really liked this post!)
As far as this medicine seller goes, I like him. He's clearly got energy and seems rather playful, or more openly playful than Ri, lol. I like his design and the moves he pulls are very eye catching. However, I think I still like Ri more, if only because his whole attitude is a mood and I feel for this man. It's also because I haven't known Kon long, and I might become more attached by the second movie. However, he seems to be a bit more energetic than Ri so far. He's certainly a little more loud, lol. I feel like he's a bit more of a little shit, though Ri had his moments in the original series and bakeneko.
Overall, I thought what the movie was going for was great, but I'll obviously have to watch the next movie and, what I believe, is supposed to be a third one, to get the whole story. Not that I mind.
A part of me is sad that I didn't know about Mononoke before, back when the original series released. However, I don't know if my younger self would have like it the way I do now. Ah, well. I've seen it now, and I am definitely going to see this ride through.
#mononoke 2024#mononoke karakasa#kon kusuriuri#kusuriuri#anime#movies#anime movie#animanga#It's late for me but I wanted to get this done lol#this draft has been sitting for forever#the next movie is this year too#so happy

Fuck. Yeah, let's talk about grief.
Have you ever lost someone close enough in such a way that you would, if given half the chance, lobotomise yourself to dull the pain even a little bit?
I have. And I was twenty-six, nearly a full decade older than Harrow.
Really, when you take a little step back, this book is all about grief. About how grief can drive you to do horrible, awful things.
Not just what Harrow did - erasing Gideon from her existence entirely - or at least trying to; though this is probably the most obvious example.
(I kinda can't believe that when I first realised Harrow's memories were all skewed, my literal first theory was "Harrow couldn't deal with the grief and fucked herself up so she could go on not feeling it".)
But also God - in his grief for the whole world, resurrecting it - resurrecting his love, his friends - and then having to deal with the consequences.
But also Mercymorn and Augustine - ten thousand years later still driven to murder by their grief - justifiably, to be honest.
It comes though in Gideon's narration - her grief for her mother, her grief for Jeannemary, her grief for herself! -
It's an undercurrent in the entire book, more present than the River.
If you lost someone that close to you, wouldn't you also fuck yourself up so you wouldn't have to remember?
I remember when I first learned that my best friend had died, suddenly -
Just having to sit there, as the world came crashing down around me -
And just not knowing how to deal with it. at ALL.
I still don't know, to be honest. It's been years.
There's something about the unrelenting cruelty of, of having to get up, having to go on. Having to eat dinner (or at least unenthusiastically pick at it), having to go to bed, try to sleep, having to get up, and go to work in the morning.
Maybe not right away. But whether you like it or not, the world just fucking keeps on turning. It's unrelenting, uncaring almost. How can everything just keep going when your world has just been shattered?
I don't blame Harrow. I don't blame John, or the Lyctors - I don't blame any of them.
I don't blame any of them.
What do you do??? What do you even do?????
And it makes me angry -
It makes me so, so angry, that it's so, so difficult to talk about it.
Grief is one of the most universal human experiences. It is. None of us will go through life without losing someone close to us. If we do, it's only cus we die young enough to become that someone to the people around us.
And how do we deal with it??? In the culture that I grew up in and live in, it's just not really talked about. You talk about it maybe, when it happens, briefly, you maybe mention going to a funeral. You hear awkwardly, sorry for your loss, condolences, I don't know what to say.
I don't know what to say. No one does, ever. It's a problem. It's a problem.
You might bring it up on anniversaries or if something reminds you of them. You might swallow it because you don't wanna bring the mood down. You might not even know how to talk about it yourself.
I don't. Not really.
I really feel like grief is the big elephant in the room in western societies, largely ignored, yet always present. Aren't we all grieving in some way? It doesn't even have to be for a person - a relationship or the climate or a place you've had to move away from - a place you remember being different to how it is now - a time you can never go back to. A pet. Your health. There are so many things you can lose forever.
Aren't we all grieving in some way?
I guess finishing this book has brought a lot of mine up to the surface, quite suddenly. I didn't expect that. But like a kaleidoscope, grief reflects in many colours. I like it when books can play on my emotions like harp strings - and this book has definitely done that; it held up a mirror, and it said:
If you had the power to erase your pain, wouldn't you?
And if you're itching now, as an older, wiser version of yourself, to tell Harrow - tell her that grief isn't easily escapable like that - tell her that those memories are precious, don't you get it - tell her that it will hurt worse, in the long run -
How would you feel? How did you feel, back then, when the wound was still so fresh and raw? When you were younger, more desperate, with fewer options?
Wouldn't you also have chosen to live in a world where your pain was overwritten?

if you insist on playing country music so loud i can hear it anywhere on my own yard can you make it like
at least actual music
country music today is apparently just a guy in a twangy voice saying signifiers with no context over a flat guitar backing
that was seriously two songs in a row whose lyrics were literally just
"A little bit of guitar, a little bit of truck A little bit of hound dog and a little bit of luck A little bit of bacon, a little bit of beans"
and
"From her cowboy boots to her down home roots She's country From the song she plays to the prayer she prays That's the way she was born and raised She ain't afraid to stay Country"
these aren't lyrics, these aren't song lyrics, these are just surface level signifiers being read out in a list holy shit
it's like if prog-rock had lyrics that were just
"Frodo and hobbits, elves and spaceships psychedelic drugs and alien dolphins Roger Dean's art and a kaleidoscope an elephant with really long legs and maybe we're riding a hot air balloon that talks"
it's like if death metal had lyrics that were just
"Death, killing, blood, darkness Scary things, angry things, growling, growling Blood and also dead bodies and people dying when you die you turn into a dead body and lose all your blood violently"
okay nevermind those are incredible lyrics for a death metal song what's that awful AI website that turns lyrics into songs i need to go load those in and see what it does with them
