finally after a whole year, starting at Giotto and ending with Bel and Rasiel, we’ve now celebrated the birthdays of every KHR character who had one shared with us by Amano! here’s a time-lapse of me editing every single one, which overall amounted up to 3 hours and 42 minutes, and 65 characters! all compacted into a 5 minute video! thank you for celebrating their birthdays with me! 💛

I think that majority of players don’t even know that chen is one of the main character in game that it’s sad. I see a lot of people complaining about her appearing in stories after reunion arc even though her screen time is already a lot less than amiya and kaltsit… I think yj already forgot about the main characters concept lmao but her getting new outfit at different region is cool i guess but why are those outfits so weird- (sorry this is just my personally ranting…

3. uhhh went on a little costume design ramble sorry. my outfits copium is basically telling myself she's really getting the 'dad who does not really understand fashion buying(designing) clothes for child' treatment anime-style (like what can i say other than point to the night and day difference of dossoles chummer e2 fit vs the ice cream collab fit)

i have my personal nitpicks for every outfit but (looks at gavial2 summer skin) a 8.8 is so much better than a...nvm i'll refrain from grading. but for all the nits i pick i think they still pass the baseline of costume design because of the storytelling they do

base chen: cop who likes to yolo a bit too much, leave that one button undone so roll up her sleeves, give her gloves, give her a walkie talkie/earpiece etc, e2 makes that jacket even bigger and has that yummy rhodes teal

CNY skin: still of the opinion/hc that its the dress fumizuki mentioned which is why she looks like shes wearing it grudgingly, it has shorts though at least !!

chummer: shes (trying to be) on a holungday so bring back her epic tourist c cap and make her existing recognizable jacket more summer-y, also the duck heart emoji

victorian arc: cop sideclass(?) to sheriff detective or something, embracing her cringe but free era by leaving her collars up now has the sense to tuck in her shirt and wear actual pants, better coverage against the elements etc etc thank terra nevermind the fact theyre so tight fitting this is just like khr also she looks flatter in the animated PV smile i'm reminded of a wb comment that went sth like 'why are you dressing like this when youre already 30' on this fit and shes not explicitly 30 etc etc but i really like the 'chuuni(cringe but free) at 30' vibe

yumen: passing-by traveler with the cape!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍 i really like how it looks in the cg lol with the thinner/darker stripes on the outside, ngl no fucking idea what that green box is but i appreciate chen still having a little green and yellow on her outfit, the shortness of the dress? bothered me at first but ive come to the terms that chen is a shorts enjoyer so

10k mountains: youxia-core with the hat and cape👍👍👍👍👍👍 and keeps the plastic part from chummer jacket as well as the checkers (i think they were zips but you know, the black and white alternating…lol remember how her current thing is supposedly dealing with the reality of being grey or whatever as little sense as that makes. we are in full hc territory here but its so much better than adding another 20 belts) the heels dont exist to me though

for the khr ask game, 🗡️!

Okay first, you have now entered "things i've thought about way too much" territory, Obviously we are working under the understanding that i would not have the fragile little shit body I have because it would not matter what the weapon is my bones would die using it <3.

Anyway Read more be upon ye cause I'm going in for the long ride here.

Firstly, while the ask is specifically of "weapon" there are multiple khr characters that use more than one weapon. So I'll put my main one and then the small additions I'd make. the 3 other options are just side arms to the main one.

A bastard sword. This would be the main one. Though heavier due to it's length it is used to be both one handed and two handed. It's utility in terms of how it can be used is one of the better blades for melee combat and since this tends to be what's happening over let's say mounted combat, makes it a better choice than some other swords. It's thicker and tougher so it has an easier time deflecting and blocking than things like the rapier which may snap under the pressure.

Since it's not sharp all along the blade it can be held at different lengths which is useful in close quarters for stabbing and if you flip it around you can use the pommel as a bludgeon and the whole sword as a flail. Though uncommon in Khr this is also really really useful against armoured opponents and people with shields due to the force it sends through the body, and the different hold allows to target specific points of the body.

Now for the Side arms options:

First side arm option:

Unsurprisingly a Buckler. Now most people incorrectly identify all circular shields to be bucklers however it's only really the small kind of cap like shields that are true bucklers. Their small size meant they could be made sturdier without becoming too heavy for the user to quickly combat. Though they don't look like much protection at first glance there's a good reason for their use.

Though mainly used to protect the sword hand they also had several other functions, as they can act as a sort of floating armour point, that due to both how much more sturdy they are and their shape could deflect many weapons well. They also double as a bludgeoning weapon due to the sort of bump in the middle of it. Additionally a skilled user can actually use them to catch an opponent's weapon and trap them allowing the user to control the fight from there.

Second side arm option:

Look you are probably not quite thinking of this but a gun. It was extremely common for sword users to use guns as an off hand once they were introduced. Especially when guns were still slow and had trouble reloading. It's literally a great option to have one if you can and gives range that a sword obviously wouldn't have.

The one problem is a lot of modern handguns aren't exactly made for one handed reload, so you have to go more with some double action revolvers, or for a more modern gun probably the Smith & Wesson M&P. Of course after future arc there people don't really reload their guns anymore with the heavy use of flame so at that point the whole debate on which gun doesn't matter nearly as much.

Third and Final side arm option:

Parrying dagger, in a sword fight, which it seems if you're carrying a sword in khr that is what most of your important fights are going to be, is an extremely useful tool. Though not as effective in terms of other types of melee fights it's still usable. Parrying daggers are made to help manipulate your opponent's weapons and are sturdier for it. There's a few different shapes of them and though the "trident" and "swordbreaker" look and sound cool they were incredibly rare and not exactly easy to use, their cons outweighing their benefits.

I would choose the ones that are designed with waves in them, as their form though a little silly are actually really good at damaging the hands using the blocked blade by causing impact in several places, and these waves are more likely to catch the weapon and give you more control.

The Mist and his Sky

This is for an AU rewrite thing me and a friend are doing of KHR. In it, Fran is introduced much earlier on. As such, this leads to the Varia finding him and bonding with him much earlier on. So have Xanxus trying his best to bond with a six year old lol. Fair warning, characters might be a little OOC for canon, I simply wanted to write dumb fluff.

Xanxus wasn’t at all sure what to think of his mist flame. For one, the kid was born during the time he was frozen and as such, they didn’t meet until now. Secondly, there was the kid’s weird behavior. Fran seemed to have a knack for egging Bel on and he never really expressed much. Yet… The Sky can’t say he hates the kid. Sure, there was a bit of a natural bond there because of their flames’ connection to each other, but the green haired boy wasn’t unpleasant to be around. The odd hatted boy tended to be quiet around Xanxus, but more in a comfortable way rather than out of fear or nervousness. 

Maybe that’s how they ended up here… The Varia were staying in their new vacation house in Namimori and Fran had come over to visit all of them. After an hour of annoying the others, the kid had settled down next to Xanxus on the couch. Fran leaned into him a little, his almost comically large apple hat resting on Xanxus’ shoulder. The dark haired man looked over, seeing the boy drinking juice from a bottle with some cartoon character with a bat symbol on it as the bottle cap. The boy’s almost uncomfortably vivid cyan eyes blankly staring ahead at the switched off tv in front of them.

“Boss.”

Fran says, breaking the silence between them. Xanxus grunts and shifts a little, making the boy’s hat fall off his shoulder.

“What, brat?” He replies. Fran turns himself around a little to look at his boss in the eyes before holding a hand out like he’s asking for something.

“I want to watch The Batman. Please.” Fran states bluntly, tacking on a quick please to sound polite. Xanxus raises an eyebrow and stares at the mist flame child for a few moments before handing the TV remote to him. The name of the show was vaguely familiar. However, growing up with Timoteo as a father, he didn’t often get to read things like comics or watch cartoons. 

As Fran switches the tv on and gets his show playing, Xanxus gets himself a drink before sitting back down. He wasn’t particularly interested in watching some kid’s show, but he was here relaxing first. He wasn’t going to let Fran push him out of his space. A quiet resumes between them as Fran watches his cartoon and Xanxus… Well after a bit of trying to just stay to his own thoughts, he starts to watch too.

“... Do you want to be some superhero when you grow up, brat?” Xanxus questions, making Fran glance at him and shakes his head.

“No, that’s stupid, boss. I want to be in the Varia when I grow up.” Fran replies before going back to his show. Xanxus wants to say that idea is even more stupid… But there’s an undeniable warmth in his chest after hearing that. He’s happy this kid, his mist flame, wants to join as soon as he’s ready to.

Soon Xanxus gets almost as invested in the show Fran, something pleasantly mind numbing about watching a cartoon. Though he does occasionally ask questions throughout the episodes that play, to which Fran answers for his sky calmly. As their 5th episode together ends and with both of their drinks now empty, Fran’s eyes start to droop close a little. Soon the boy carefully lays across the couch and rests his head in Xanxus’ lap. Had Fran been anyone else, Xanxus would’ve just pushed them right off… Yet he lets the kid stay. As the mist flame slips his hat off and adjusts it to make a makeshift pillow, he rubs his eyes with a yawn.

“Tomorrow we can watch Pokemon or Scooby Doo.” The boy tells him bluntly. The assassin boss could scold him and grumble about how busy they are here… Yet instead, he pets his head carefully like he’s convinced this kid is fragile.

“Yeah, sure, brat. Sounds good enough to me.” Xanxus says while Fran falls asleep on him.

why have i never seen anyone talk about how tsuna kills byakuran? because he does, he kills him. so like, can we talk about this? and i know he's still alive in his time, but that's literally not the point, it literally doesn't matter here. especially when tyl he still very much stays dead because that's one of the conditions for everything he did to be erased. and tsuna did this, killed him. burned him alive, in fact, and in cold-blood too.

okay, so maybe not in cold-blood, because he was full of rage and hatred and pain and grief when he did it, but like. he was still very much aware that it was what he was doing. that it was what he wanted to do, because he was full of rage and hatred and pain and grief when he did it.

can we just talk about this for a minute? about what happens after when he cools down? when he realizes just what he's done? because he wanted to do it?

byakuran is literally his first kill, can we just acknowledge that? and he burned him alive of all things, like. idk, i just.

tsuna killed him. tsuna killed him. tsuna just killed someone for the first time in his life. and isn't that ironic when the whole point was so they could go back to the past where their hands aren't forced to get bloody? not as much anyway? doesn't that make it even more fucked up?

tsuna kills byakuran.

can we. can someone just talk about this with me for a second?

so interesting that this is what being a "small animal" means to him. and of course that he calls tsuna that. and even if in the panel right before these ones he says "i'm not with him", he so clearly is and has been for a long time now, and it's precisely because he sees tsuna as a small animal. sees him taking on more than he can bear, and so he takes part of that burden to bear himself so it won't crush him. hears him crying out for help and doesn't look away, doesn't act as if he didn't hear it. answers his call.

because that's what the strongs do, right? that's something only the strongs can afford to do, and so it makes it their responsibility to do it. and also because he can't let tsuna be crushed by all that weight on his shoulders before he reaches the full potential he sees in him, before he finds fangs of his own (< or whatever the exact phrasing he used during the varia arc was lol, you know the line i'm talking about).

it's such a rare treat to see hibari confused and not sure of himself in or in control of any given situation, but he's nothing but confused in his fight against genkishi, and it's the cutest he's been so far tbh.

also it's super funny (and he's even more hilarious than usual) and made me realize that whether he's confused or not, he's at the very least always out of the loop of what's actually going on because he's always so dismissive of everything he doesn't care about, i.e, will he get to fight someone strong, and did anyone break namimori middle's rules he has to bite to death, and is anyone trying to boss him around he has to bite to death. and it's literally it, he does not care about getting any type of context whatsoever any more than that, and even actively makes damn sure no one can fill him in like with dino during the varia arc because he's a little shit. and would probably make himself forget on the spot even if someone did manage to fill him in on the situation, because he does not care.

and it's super hilarious to think about what he thinks is going on at literally any time? like, i would pay money to have his pov on everything that happens in the manga. does he think everything that happened since mukuro was other schools picking a fight with nami middle the way it technically was with mukuro tbf with him? did he think the varia were some kind of gang targetting nami middle or something? did he even realized yet that tsuna is a don-to-be and that dino is an actual don? does he even know what vongola is yet, or does he think everyone always talks about clams a whole fucking lot for some reasons, and maybe he should make it against nami middle's rules too because it's annoying?

like, he time travels to the future, and his priorities are 1) yams lying beaten on the ground (not for the right reasons lol, but this one is still valid of him), 2) genkishi's eyebrows being against nami middle's rules, and 3) kusakabe ordering him around, without a single thought spared to, you know, the obvious time-travel he's just gone through.

like, for tsuna khr is him getting dragged into mafia business times and times again, but for hibari it's probably, like. people keeping starting beef with nami middle, but it's fine because they're strong and he gets to have fun biting them to death LMAO. this is so fucking funny??

hibari is literally the funniest character in this manga hands-down, he wouldn't be caught dead giving a single fuck about anything ever, bless him

but what ABOUT a khr au where the arco are tsuna’s guardians tho?? where they speedrun him through his growth with all their chaos, seven little not-babies menaces running around and stretching his sanity very thin, but going batshit crazy whenever anyone else even only mildly inconveniences him. batshit crazy in the murder way of course. also tsuna is low-key insane himself, as a treat.

anyway i think this is how they'd meet:

REBORN

okay so let’s just put aside the fact that tsuna is the last vongola heir for a bit, but of course they still meet. reborn is in namimori for one random hit or another, and he just so happens to cross paths with tsuna. tsuna who’s walking home from yet another day of bullying at school by both teachers and students, and looks miserable and pathetic, and the way he holds himself all hunched up over himself and ducking his head because god forbid he makes eye contact with anyone and looking around him like something will jump on him from nowhere and everywhere tell reborn everything he needs to know about what kind of pitiful life he lives, but. he still catches his attention.

so he purposefully walks past him to test him and test the waters in his best “i’m just a normal baby” impression, and tsuna. tsuna does a fearful, wary double take that seals his fate, because reborn? reborn goes “oh, he’s a too beautiful diamond in the rough to be left unpolished.”

he shows up the next day at his door, says he’s a tutor and he’s here for him.

“you’re a baby,” tsuna says, with too much wariness and disbelief he shouldn’t have the self awareness to have.

“let me in, i wasn’t asking,” reborn says.

“i’d still rather not.”

reborn gets in somehow, and by the time tsuna needs to make sense of that (he doesn’t), reborn has already charmed his mom with a gentlemanly bow and removal of his hat as a greeting, and a “what a lovely home”, and a “this is truly some delicious coffee”, and a “under my guidance, your son’s grades will noticeably improve within only a month, and i only ask for a roof and food in exchange.”

tsuna sits across from him at the kitchen’s table, because what else is there to do at this point?

“did you ever try killing one of them?” reborn asks him casually out of the blue. “i think it’d significantly improve your obvious, deep self-esteem issues, and your life in general.”

and the first words out of tsuna’s mouth are “i mean, it would, but--”

reborn stays. (of course he was always going to stay, but this? he wouldn’t miss on this for anything in the world.)

COLONNELLO

i like to think that wherever one of the arco goes, at some point or another all the arco end up there too and make it everyone else’s problem, so of course one day colonnello just bursts through tsuna’s window, all guns blazing and aimed at reborn, triggering reborn’s traps around his sleeping place, and suddenly there’s bombs exploding in tsuna’s bedroom. of course reborn responds to colonnello in kind and more.

tsuna screeches screams, falling from his bed, then scrambles for cover for literal dear life as reborn and colonnello use his bedroom as a battlefield. his clumsy, flailing limbs and panic make it harder to get under his desk, the bullets wheezing past him and reborn and colonnello using him as foothold which will definitely leave bruises not helping, and almost like they’re doing it on purpose (reborn totally does).

colonnello eventually deigns noticing him once reborn and him are done saying hello to each other. he raises his eyebrow. “you got a kid?”

“i found him,” reborn says.

he’s more like a pet, really, tsuna hears loud and clear, and you know what? he’s okay with that. he’s really not ready to deal with the implications and expectations of being reborn’s kid just yet. being his pet is a hell of a lot less stressful, and reborn is making his life pretty damn stressful as it is already.

“hi,” he greets colonnello. “maybe next time you can use the door? it’s something pretty common over here a lot of us have. maybe you can even knock? it’s just kind of seen as the polite thing to do, you know.”

colonnello laughs, startled and delighted. “you’re literally hiding under your desk right now, where the fuck does that sass come from?”

“i know, right?” reborn says. “he’s full of surprises.”

“yeah, i can see why you like him.”

FON

tsuna thinks he’s having a stroke when he meets fon. thinks he’s looking at hibari who somehow was turned into a baby, and is freaking out too much to really notice the red pacifier around his neck and getting to the calming conclusion he’s just another one of reborn’s friends. thinks he’s looking at hibari who’s so pissed by having been turned into a baby, he’s smiling.

“hello,” fon says, bowing his head, and tsuna thinks it’s hibari genuinely being nice with him.

he faints right there and then in the street.

do you ever think about how absolutely horrifying reborn being the world's greatest hitman is. about what a monster it makes him, like, in a fundamental, intrinsic way, what a monster it makes him at the very core of who he is, even if he clearly learned to reign it in, even if he's built himself a good enough humane mask other people can believe in and believe him when he says and acts as if he still cares about what being human means, even when most days now he can barely remember the times he actually did, if they were ever such times.

it's like. amano shonen-ed the whole mafia thing so to speak with the power of friendship and found family even through deaths and blood and violence, so much so the deaths and blood and violence ended up merely being props to the power of friendship and found family, so much so she ended up portraying the mafia positively enough--or at the very least implying that positive side it could have strongly enough, canonically and narratively whenever we're reminded of reborn being the world's greatest hitman, we're always told we're supposed to be impressed by it, to respect him for that, that he's a standard other characters have the right idea to strive for and can only hope to come close to one day. like, remember his fight against iemitsu? when he says iemitsu fought countless battles to protect his family, but much less than himself, and he's actually praising the both of them, because reborn has reached the greatest heights of being a mafiosi and we're supposed to find that commendable, when what he actually says is that he's slaughtered countless that dared to pose a threat to him and what he cares about, but how would we ever know if they were actually a legitimate threat and if the lengths he might have gone to dispose of them were even remotely warranted or fathomable from a human point of view if you know what i mean, and even if they were, like, the sheer numbers of them--

do you just. ever think about what being an arco means? about what earned them that title, the path they walked on so far and so well they earned themselves that title, and what it means that they did. not necessarily for all of them of course, because being the smartest person in the world doesn't have to mean at all you brought that intellect into the darkest human places there are, and being the world's greatest stuntman doesn't give you much opportunities to go to these places to begin with, but reborn, my god. he's the world's greatest hitman. the world's greatest hitman. and he prides himself so much on it, is so casual about it.

do--do you--do you just ever think about it? and go a little crazy about it? and lose your whole goddamn mind over it--

Varia Arc - Xanxus' Backstory

Ok I'll sum this up quickly.

Context: Basically what happens in KHR manga canon is that Xanxus was born in the slums and developed a rare flame, the Flame of Wrath, at an early age, and eventually got taken in by Timoteo (Vongola 9th).

Xanxus was made to believe that he'd be the Vongola 10th boss (and was supported by most of the family, except Timoteo ofc), and his arrogance grew as he got older from being raised on a pedestal.

Timoteo kept the secrets hidden that Xanxus could never be Vongola 10th (assumably cuz he was too distanced from the main bloodline)

Xanxus eventually finds out the secret of the Vongola inheritance and rule by breaking into/melting a locked chamber with his flame.

Enraged that he could never be the successor and at Timoteo for betraying him by keeping the information hidden from him, teen Xanxus eventually gathered the Varia members as his subordinates and started a coup d'état against Vongola 9th (an incident later referred to as the "Cradle Affair")

Xanxus got punished with a fate almost worse than death, Timoteo uses the Dying Will Zero Point Breakthrough technique that essentially freezes him in (magical) ice.

Timoteo never apologizes for (basically) freezing his son in magical ice and just, essentially leaves him there in ice prison. For 8 years.

But to the rest of the Vongola family, this truth was concealed, so it was widely believed he was kept on strict surveillance instead.

In the present KHR plot, 8 years later, Xanxus gets freed by an unknown person, and, when presented/confronted with his traumas that get dug up again, goes off the rails.

Understanding that this is the only way that he could become Vongola 10th boss, when both the Vongola 9th boss (Timoteo), and the chief external advisor (Iemitsu) approved of Tsuna as the Vongola 10th boss successor, Xanxus plots a scheme in his goal to become Vongola 10th boss.

He has Vongola 9th stuffed inside a deadly robot draining at his life force (LMFAO), then sets up the Ring Battles - a tournament style set-up where he and his Varia members will compete against Tsuna and co., to fight for the Vongola Rings, in deadly matches, in order to decide who will become the Vongola 10th boss and Vongola 10th generation guardians.

(KHR: Varia Arc - Ch. 122)

When this relevation is revealed:

Tsuna ends up splitting the robot that Timoteo is inside (unaware that he was trapped inside).

Timoteo only apologizes to Tsuna for "allowing Xanxus to escape [from the ice he was encased/trapped in]"

Timoteo then reaffirms that he chose Tsuna as the Vongola 10th successor, and not Xanxus

And never apologizes to his own son

Like WHY is THAT your priorities. Apologizing for allowing him to escape?

I'm never gonna get over how fucked up it is in context that Timoteo resolved this sitaution by ice-ing his son.

Reborn's words in the KHR manga also confirm what I initially speculated as well: Timoteo misused the Dying Will Zero Point Breakthrough technique, the freezing ice technique.

It was originally created by Vongola Primo (1st generation Vongola boss) to seal away Dying Will flames.

The Cradle Affair situation could've ended with Timoteo just freezing his hands temporarily.

It's not supposed to be used to FREEZE PEOPLE...

He didn't want to deal with the problems he caused by being a shit ass neglective parent tho, so he just froze Xanxus and kept the ice locked away in chains and metal.

Someone like Reborn, who is privy to many of the Vongola family's secrets, even thought he was kept under surveillance after that (which would've been more reasonable).

I'm glad that KHR's framing on its villains/antagonists is mostly neutral, but I really can't stand the way it treats Xanxus' harboured rage/resentment as something he was in the wrong for

Like it's so obvious that he thinks of "love and friendship" as worthless because his views are so obviously affected by his upbringing - he only knows "love" from the worthless man that betrayed him.

Added with the fact that as an assassin leader, the leader of the Varia, a mafia boss, he never would've had the need for the "Feelings first" attitude that Tsuna has. It is wholly unecessary to him.

In retrospect, to be "loved" genuinely, is what he (Xanxus) always needed. But he didn't get that. He certainly didn't get it from his shit ass incompetent parent.

Like it framed his harboured resentment and the fact that he was so emotionally broken and riddled with grief and trauma, as something he was in the wrong for (and frames Timoteo as sympathetic).

Magi, which has such a sympathetic and cathartic framing of its antagonist/opposing figure charas, would never do this to me!

Like I agree Xanxus went off the rails overboard (valid of him tho lmfao considering his context) but none of his actions, deserved that kind of fate.
