It's Naruto Worldbuildin Time!
How was Kusagakure able to stay in business?
Tumblr media
Here's what Narutopedia DE has to say: Kusagakure (草隔れ, Kusagakure no Sato, literally "The Village Hidden in the Grass") is located in the Grass Realm. The shinobi from this village specialize in jutsus that can affect the flora and fauna. Referring to the shinobi who came from Kusagakure, it can be assumed that this village is much less peaceful. More from Narutopedia EN: Kusagakure is skilled in diplomacy, a trait they constantly use to read the movements of other countries and stay one step ahead of them. They also analyse techniques from other villages in a similar manner. Because of these principles, others find it hard to read the shinobi from this village's attitudes. Although it has never been named, the country Kusagakure is located in has been shown on several occasions. The country is rich with forests, some consisting of giant mushrooms or bamboo. It also seems to have many rivers and deep ravines.
Imperialism is a thing in the shinobi world, and the grass realm was raided by Iwagakure. Despite that, it seems to be quite industrialized. I was wondering how? Here's my theory. Before the grass realm had its rich forests and mushrooms, it was surrounded by.. well.. grasslands. The ability of Kusa ninja to change the flora and fauna has made it possible to turn those badlands into rich forests with huge mushrooms. But aside from creating forestlands, Kusagakure found another way to utilize their speciality: Grain cultivation and agriculture.
Kusagakure is the biggest exporter of grains (except rice, that's Kiri) and vegetables. They can create the best growing conditions for these products. Also, the flowershop that Ino's family owns? The flowers they sell are imported from Kusagakure.

Kissing @moonamayillu for all their hard work every time they draw something for me 🧡🧡
This time it's a scene from the past that will eventually be explored through fic (the past in general, not necessarily this specific scene). Hyakutori and his only child, Shin, before the rest of life went from bad to worse, in an actual decent moment between unpleasant ones. He's even got one of his giant otter summons, Parduoc, for extra company. Back in Kusagakure (located in what I he is called the Land of Mushrooms), thankfully far away from where he came from and never wants to go back to, aka Kirigakure. There will be unpleasant things to go back to at home and he'll be partly to blame for it. But at this very moment, none of that is happening.
(unfortunately, there is not a happy ending to any of this. just wanted to indulge in some Hyakutori time since Moona actually helped me get his looks down.)
Tumblr media
Never posted this but this is from several years later, when things DID go from bad to worse. Shin ran off and got picked up by Root. The only good thing that came from it is that Hyakutori finally got the divorce he should have pursued a long ass time ago. Life is bad when you're a war deserter whose only child ran away from home because you and your now ex wife would not stop fighting in front of them.
There ARE some better things that will come his way. But he's still guilty of not so great parenting even though it could have been avoided through the magical invention known as divorce. Until said good things start rolling in, he's really gotta reflect on his behavior. And do some healing as well because he's got his own problems that stem from outside that disaster of a marriage and genuinely are terrible. Hyakutori is not a good man or a bad man, he's a product of the world he lives in and I'm fascinated by him. Yes I created him. Yes I also need to study him and even kiss him.

Naoshi Umi | 海 尚志 Naoshi Umi is a shinobi from Kusagakure and of a squad comprised of him and his classmates Hibari and Amane. He is the son of Shiu Umi and does not know who his father is. Shiu was a former hero to the village, but has fallen from grace in more recent times. She also has never been the best mother to him, with constant neglect in favor of hunting for a new man to drag home, as well as not hanging around the best crowds either. Naoshi's childhood goals were to become a better hero to Kusa than his mother was, and to have the village taken more seriously and stop being trodden over by the bigger villages such as Konoha and Iwa.
By the time the Fourth Shinobi World War rolls around, he gets his chance to be seen as a hero as he's sent as part of Kusagakure's special forces to aid the bigger villages in the war.
Naoshi has a chain-based kekkei genkai, just like his mother. His "chains" are comprised of chakra-charged keratin (the proteins that makes up hair, skin, and nails). They can extend and retract as the user pleases.
Naoshi's birthday is November 18th, his blood type is A+, and his height is 5'10.

Enter Keiharu! A new-ish Naruto oc of mine.
They grew up in Kusagakure but left to train alone when they were around 14, and ended up abandoning their village entirely when they met someone who promised to grant them everything they wanted in life (which, predictably, was a horrible decision)

@bladedhunter for Kakashi!
It hadn't been a particularly hard mission for the two of them, some reconnaissance and acquiring of information in the Land of Earth (why, Miki is confident that Kakashi was likely capable of doing such a mission on his own), it had been a long one. Classified documents acquired, it was nothing more than high alert travel on the way back. While no one ought to know they were transporting important information across border lines, it would be much safer once they crossed back into the Land of Fire.
By the time they enter the Land of Plains, they are tired, strained, and in need of rest. Miki cannot take feeling grimy and greasy for a second more.
Tumblr media
"Kakashi-" she muses, drawing out the last syllable of his name. She knows he's tired too, with the way he hunches just a bit more. "You know...we camped this whole mission. We traded who was on look out and who got to sleep. Shouldn't we get to truly rest a bit, recuperate? I know a nice Ryokan not far from here. Wouldn't it be nice to have a bath? Eat some decent food? Sleep on something soft?" She bats her eyelashes at him, just in case he's inclined to say no.

I’m genuinely trying to understand what’s so great about Minato’s leadership skills that Hiruzen chose him as Hokage.
He states that Minato's cell will separate into two teams as Kakashi became a Jönin and he's fit to lead (x) despite knowing Kakashi diminishes Obito constantly and the latter isn’t even willing to respect his commander (x, x). Everything he does about this animosity between them is ignore it and allow Rin out of all people to try to calm them both down (x).
Tumblr media
Kakashi even takes a very bad decision during an attack (x), risking his (x) and his team’s lives (x), and jeopardizing the mission they were sent to do (which was incredibly important, as Minato states) and the only thing he does is:telling Kakashi not to “follow always the rules” and scolding Obito for keeping his guard down.
Tumblr media
He tells the three of them that “the most important thing is teamwork” (x) but did he had this group for such a short period of time that he couldn’t even create a pleasant atmosphere between them? They appearently became a team prior to the war (or amidst it, but a period of time before this events at least). Even Kakashi, who only had Team 7 for a little less than a year and who practically did nothing to fix their dynamic was able to get a more functional team…
Furthermore, it was Obito who sought Minato’s advice about Kakashi (x), and not only did Minato tell him about a very personal issue of the young leader (x, x, x), but also tried to fix the whole situation by speaking with just half of the problematic duo, despite Obito never denying any request from Kakashi (as Kakashi never told him to do anything in relation to the mission).
Tumblr media
According to Minato, Iwagakure invaded Kusagakure, which is next to Konohagakure, by deploying a thousand shinobi to the battlefront (Team Kakashi focuses on infiltration and sabotage, while he is the front-line combater).
Tumblr media
The feat he became famous for, including amongst the fandom, is either false or at least exagerated, as he arrives at the battlefield when there still are Konoha’s shinobi (x), as his comrade says, there’re FIFTY Iwa ninjas still alive, not a thousand as many believe, so most of the soldiers were already taken care of by other Konoha shinobi.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, Minato didn’t even throw the fuinjutsu kunai he needed in order to perform, making the remaining four survivors do so; he had help even performing the task he became famous for.

Sasuke had returned to Konoha.
Hundreds of miles away, Naruto would repeat these words nearly every night like a prayer for the majority of two years. In his bed in Kusagakure, Naruto would trace the parallel lines of the power cables just outside his window and picture in his mind’s eye, this: Sasuke, framed by lofty stone gates and the wizened visage of the Hokage Mountain.
-or-
Sasuke returns to Konoha only to learn Naruto has left for a long undercover mission. Lots of pining ensues.

Uzumaki family AU, where Kushina takes the lead of the clan and made it her mission to gather as much as possible every remainder of the clan into her family. When she heard from Jiraiya that he trained a member of her clan in Amegakure she immediately scolded him and insisted he brought his team of apprentice in Konoha to visit.
Nagato was hesitant because he didn't really feel like going there, but he also kind of wanted to get to have another family. They ended up meeting and bonding very quickly, Kushina immediately adopting him as her little brother, as well as his two childhood friends. Even more so when the three of them became a triad.
Karin was also picked up at some point as Kushina met her mom at some point and invited her and her daughter to move with them to avoid the exploitation by people of Kusagakure. Her mother is very weak and so rarely leave the house but she's still alive and cared for by her new family.
Karin and Naruto love their uncle but their youthful energy is too much for him sometimes.
Jiraiya get more involved into this family bc Kushina will end him otherwise, also she made him swear he would stop being a major creep else he's not allowed to visit his godson.
Oh and grandma Mito is still there even if it makes no sense.

👥I've not roleplayed with a Karin before you arrived on my dash. And so far, you've been phenomenal. So I'm curious for a headcanon. Maybe three, if you have them! Or is that too greedy?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll do you one better, since I'm unsure if you mean a HC for just Karin (them) or a HC for Karin and Orochimaru's relation (them(plural)) I'll do both!
1 / 2 / 3
Karin was not given any education in Kusagakure, and she was so poorly educated due to the village not believing they should waste resources on her schooling, that she couldn't even spell her first name before she was taken in by Orochimaru. It's one of the main reasons that no one noticed or realized she was one of the few surviving Uzumaki clan members because she never had once registered or even knew how to spell it.
While her official rank is "genin" from Kusagakure, it was actually more an honorific title as she never passed any exam to earn that title. The village simply gave it to her to justify putting her in the middle of battle or shipping her off to various dangerous places where a civilian might not be allowed.
Karin struggles immensely with releasing her chakra in a way that manifests outside of her body. Example: Transformation Justsu is decently easy for her, as the transformation effects her body. Shadow clone jutsu, despite being relatively easy, forces Karin to project her chakra outside the body and as such has immense difficulty. This is due to her healing ability, where most of her mass amounts of chakra are locked inside her body until an outside force coaxes it out. When doing any kind of jutsu that requires her energy to manifest outside the body Karin will either pinch her own skin or bite her lip to coax her own barriers to release the chakra needed for whatever jutsu she is attempting.
4 / 5 / 6
Her views on Orochimaru are more parental in nature. Though she understands he needs to keep up a reputation, she doesn't dare to ever call him a parent (while sober at least) but the bond there is something she would describe as familial. Even though she knows her clan name isn't his, and they don't particularly have a clan, she considers herself more part of his family than she ever was an Uzumaki. To the point, she will forego her birth-clan title out of spite since her clan had done nothing in comparison to what Orochimaru had done for her.
One disappointment Karin has in herself is that she wasn't able to heal Orochimaru's arms or help cure Kimimaru. These disappointments she holds over her head with much despair and it's why after these events she really ups her progress. Focuses immensely on her work to the point she's awarded full control over the Northern Hideout. Where she, even without being asked to, continues her experiments on worthy information about the human body, disease, and mental strain, to fully discover as much as she can about the human body and signs of it's ailment or strain in hopes of identifying sickness before it progresses to the point the body is unsalvageable.
Regardless of whether Sasuke had returned to the village or not, Karin had always intended to return to Orochimaru after the war. The main reason that Karin had attached herself to Sasuke was because Orochimaru was 'dead' to her knowledge. Her loyalty to Orochimaru will always trump Sasuke, and it's why she returns to his side after the war. If it weren't for Orochimaru requesting/saying he is helping Sasuke, Karin would not have bothered to stay or help in the slightest.

Amasa Furude | 古手 天草
Amasa Furude is a Kusagakure shinobi on Team Koumei, alongside classmates Kanata and Sayuri, and their jonin instructor Koumei. Amasa comes from a civilian family who disapproved of his aspirations to become a ninja and was kicked out, but thanks to Koumei, his neighbor and childhood friend's older brother, who also had come from a civilian family, was taken in by him when Koumei's brother, Akari, was old enough to become a ninja as well.
At the Kusagakure Academy, Amasa was already very proficient in ninjutsu and bukijutsu and graduated top of his class. To his luck he was assigned as part of Koumei's squad and eventually entered into the following chunin exams, which he managed to be one of only 2 Kusagakure genin to get promoted to chunin.
Later on, he eventually makes jonin and becomes part of the special forces Kusagakure sends in to assist with the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Oh no, i made choices
(technically this is part of my AU but you can read it as standalone)
The mission was simple, if dangerous. ANBU missions were always risky, but infiltration of another village didn't just risk death, it risked war.
So all Kakashi had to do was not get caught. Simple as.
Nominally, Grass was Konoha's ally. But they were only allies because Grass had survived the Third War by forming non-aggression treaties with *every* major nation, so that allyship was tenuous at best. Intel had suggested that Orochimaru was up to something, and he had been spotted near Kusagakure. Kakashi's team was sent in to verify whether he was working with them, or if he was observing for his own reasons.
They'd been here for three weeks now, and Kakashi hadn't located any signs of his presence. If Orochimaru wasn't as dangerous as he was, it would've been a relief. But instead, it left him with a sense of dread - either Orochimaru *was* here, and he'd gotten even better at hiding his presence, or he *wasn't*, in which case they had lost his trail yet again.
Regardless, the primary objective was a failure. That left the secondary objective - reconnaissance. That was much more successful - while searching for evidence of Orochimaru, they'd gotten better details on Kusa's training regimens, their current level of military strength, mission completion records, details the Land of Fire's daimyo could use when negotiating trade deals.
One report in particular had stuck out: Kusagakure had evidently acquired a new bloodline, and was using it to bolster their failing hospital system, which hadn't yet recovered from their loss of field medics in wartime. That was useful information, but the far more interesting part was the clan name.
Uzumaki.
Uzushio had been destroyed during the war, with the few members of the founding clan who hadn't been slaughtered in the ensuing massacre scattered to the winds. Kakashi had to investigate, to see whether or not Kusagakure was in any danger of acquiring a clan of fuinjutsu experts.
It turned out he needn't have worried. It wasn't a clan. It was a single kunoichi, who had emigrated more than half a decade prior, and judging by the conspicuous lack of blood seals, had evidently not been taught the clan's techniques by the time she had fled.
She had also, according to the records, died two months prior, due to stress from her bloodlimit. The records indicated she had left behind a daughter, who had seemingly inherited that same bloodlimit, though as she was academy age, was limited in how frequently she could train it.
'Strange that she would be trained at all,' Kakashi thought. It wasn't unheard of for prodigies to show talent at that age, but as he understood it, most clan children didn't have the chakra capacity to properly utilize such techniques until they were at least age eight. Even he was mostly limited to his taijutsu and kenjutsu skills when he was that age.
------
The first time he laid eyes on Uzumaki Karin, Kakashi's breath caught in his throat. He'd known, logically, that Kushina had been part of the same clan.
He hadn't expected her to be Kushina's spitting image.
He watched as she scratched at her arm absently, and noted a bandage beneath her sleeve. A taijutsu accident, maybe? Kids just starting in the academy were prone to all sorts of scrapes.
So he wasn't just spying on a child who shared Kushina's name. He was possibly spying on her baby cousin. That was-
That was nothing. She wasn't his responsibility. He'd just observe her technique for his mission, and then he would leave.
-----
Kakashi shadowed the chuunin who lead Karin to the hospital. He hadn't expected them to pull her out of class for training, but it made sense. If she was a prodigy, she might have already learned the material. He'd gotten special permission to leave class early for training after proving his proficiency, after all.
Or maybe it was a medical emergency. Their hospital might be in more dire straights than he thought, if they needed to enlist the help of a medic-nin in training.
-----
Kakashi had been wrong.
Karin wasn't a prodigy, and she wasn't training as a medic. In fact, her bloodline didn't require anything from her at all.
All she had to do was her best to not scream as a team of wounded shinobi bit her hard enough to draw blood.
The bandage hadn't been covering a taijutsu injury. It had been covering bite marks.
He had seen worse. He had seen battlefields. He'd seen ROOT. He'd seen the results of Orochimaru's handiwork first hand.
But she was only six.
The nurse who treated her afterwards sent her home by herself, without even an escort.
-----
He made his choice.
Their time was up. There was another ANBU team in the area who would cause a distraction two hours after sunset, allowing his team to slip out during the chaos. Once they crossed the border, they'd be home free.
There was nothing he could do for her. She wasn't his responsibility. His responsibility was the mission.
He shifted his mask to unseal Obito's eye. Using the Sharingan outside of combat was a waste of chakra, but... he wanted to remember this. He didn't want to forget her face.
His pupil whirled, and the world became that much sharper. Colors were more vibrant, detail was more clear. The rapidly darkening sky may as well have been the noon sun.
And as he watched Uzumaki Karin unwrap the bandage to apply more antibacterial ointment, he saw the tear tracks streaming down her face.
He made another choice.
------
The distraction was a success. All four members of his squad made it out of the village without any alarms. No one would know that they had ever been there.
"Wolf-taichou. Were there any... complications, that we should know about?"
Well, at the very least, they'd never know that Konoha had been there. They'd realize that someone was.
"Hm? Oh, no, no complications. Everything went fine.'' He shifted his grip on Karin's unconcious form, to prevent her from being jostled too much. Even with the Sharingan, sleeping genjutsu could be broken rather easily. "I might've picked up some souvenirs, though."
"Wolf-taichou."
Even under the mask, he could hear his cute little kouhai's agitation. Cat really was starting to come out of his shell.
"Maa, it's fine. No one was watching her."
"That's not the- you can't just steal a foreign child. You understand that, right?"
"Hmm. Does it really count as stealing? She didn't even have parents. I'm sure no one will notice."
"You know," Owl chimed in, helpfully, "technically our treaty only covers returning captive missing-nin. I'm pretty sure there aren't any regulations against stealing orphans. Seems like an oversight."
"See, Cat? Owl says it's okay. I'm sure the Hokage will understand."
"Wolf-taichou."
-----'
Sarutobi looked at the team impassively, and very pointedly did not mention the small child currently drooling on Kakashi's shoulder. He took a long draw from his pipe before speaking.
"Anbu Wolf, I'll take your report privately. The rest of you, dismissed."
"Sir!"
Sarutobi continued to stare at Kakashi as the rest of the team flash stepped away. It was, in fact, several seconds before he spoke.
"Kakashi. What the fuck were you thinking."

Another slice of life from my "Haku Lives" AU. Starring my OC Jun Akechi and the annoying idea that he looks like a porcupine. 🦔 Thanks to Haku and his message. 😹
Transcription:"Please shave today, you look like a porcupine."
Some snippets of this AU here.
When Haku finally woke up after Jun (A former medic-nin from Kusagakure) treated his wounds, he wasn't happy to be alive. Without Zabuza he felt completely lost and without a purpose anymore, especially now that he had to give up being a shinobi due to the consequences of his injuries. So he wasn't grateful to Jun at all at first. Eventually Haku decided to follow him, trying to put his knowledge of medicinal herbs to good use and give new meaning to his life (also thanks to Naruto's words during their fight).
To Jun every life is important and worth living. Even that of an enemy. Shocked by the atrocities of the Third Ninja War when he was a Genin, he later left his village to become a wandering doctor, aiming to help people. Having Haku by his side was a big help to his mission despite Haku's polite but cold and almost hostile attitude towards him. Feeling responsible for Haku, Jun tried his best to best to be there for him and make him feel appreciated and respected.
It took Haku three years to fully heal (both spiritually and physically) and get used to his new life. However, in this time the two have gradually become very close, even if Haku continues to tease Jun with more o less cutting remarks.
Not that Jun knows that Haku is just teasing him now.
Yes, Haku is the real boss here. 😼 (In my mind he developed a more incisive personality. 😺)

@fighterbound asked: "k-karin-san," hinata plays with the end of her sleeves," how does it feel to travel? just endlessly traveling?" the idea of it sends her stomach twisting from the unknown and uncertainty. her heart on the other hand seems to skip a few beats, picturing the freedom to it.
" why, you thinkin' bout travelling forever princess ? " amusement graces her features for a brief moment before she deigns to answer the other's question seriously. her head shifts to the side and karin's hand sprawl out in front of her. " travelling -- is lonely. " she starts. hinata has been nothing but kind to her, karin figures the least she could do is tell the other of the grittiness of it. " there was sasuke, and suigetsu, and juugo at first, and then just sasuke, and then --- no one but myself. " tongue pushes into cheek and she gazes off, reds focusing on a tree that sways in the wind. she does not like konoha. it is both too peaceful and feels suffocating like something is under the surface that makes her chest tighten and the hair on her arms stand on edge. " there's no home for me to return too, hinata. i have no choice but to travel. " eyes make way from the tree in the distance to pinpoint the hyuuga with her ever-knowing gaze. " my homeland was destroyed. kusagakure, destroyed. otogakure, destroyed. orochimaru is kept under watch by anbu and i simply do better when i'm not watched like an animal on display. you have a home. don't leave it for foolish idleness. "
