Mitski Thrills Town Hall with Acoustic Take on New Album
Mitski – Town Hall – September 26, 2023
After some speculation that last year’s Laurel Hell might be Mitski’s final studio album, she delighted fans with the release of The Land Is Hospitable and So Are We earlier this month. She clarified to NPR, “I never intended to leave music … I decided to leave the industry for however long it would take for me to get my heart and soul back. But eventually, I kind of looked around and realized just how lucky I was to get to create the music I want to make and have my music reach other people.” To stamp her renewed outlook, the singer-songwriter embarked on the Amateur Mistake Intimate Shows, a four-city North American tour. The shift from the raucous production of Laurel Hell to the considerably quieter and meditative The Land Is lends to the more personal presentation of her work compared to her previous visit to Radio City Music Hall. As with the first show in Mexico City, Mitski played an acoustic set of her latest songs at a sold-out Town Hall on Tuesday night.
Running down the recent record in track order, Mitski began with its opening single, “Bug Like an Angel,” standing front and center at the mic bookended by a guitarist and a cellist. She provided a hearty hello to crowd and shared her history in the city with a story about writing “Class of 2013.” It was the year she graduated college, as well as the turning point when she decided to continue the dream of being a musician. A decade later she thanked New Yorkers for dreaming with her. The audience was rapt in the reverie of every quiver of her vocal delivery, while Mitski slowly incorporated gestures to emphasize her lyrics, from outstretched arms for “I Don’t Like My Mind” to a raised arm cue upon the lyrics “clap for me in the dark” on “When Memories Snow.”
Performing “My Love Mine All Mine” to the rafters felt like an opera singer unraveling. However, delivering the final track, “I Love Me After You,” bent over and then culminating in a lounging position brought the hall to a standing ovation. As a reward of appreciation, Mitski continued with a couple more songs from her back catalog welcoming folks to sing along. One ardent fan scream from the balcony upon the first few chords of “Francis Forever” and everyone else in the room commenced singing. After the trio of older favorites “I Bet on Losing Dogs,” the infectious “Love Me More” and the melancholic “A Pearl,” Mitski returned solo with an acoustic guitar to encore with “A Burning Hill” and a cover of Peter La Farge’s “Coyote, My Little Brother.” —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck

On Oct. 14, around two dozen organizers and community members gathered in front of New York City Hall, the office of Mayor Eric Adams, to host a No Cops in Power rally.
The protest was organized by the New York Community Action Project (NYCAP) – an affiliate of the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression – to call attention to and protest how Mayor Adams continues to funnel money into the bloated $6 billion NYPD budget and away from social programs.

Disappointment Manifest in Crowd Which Throngs City Hall

Many Former Civic Employes Hope For Reinstatement
----
Disappointment was manifest in the crowded city hall corridors when news was given out that the police promotions, announced for today., would not be made until later in the week. Many had come down to the City Hall to obtain the results of the police reorganization and hundreds milled about in every available space. The Hall of Honor now present a spectacle never before witnessed in the memory of old corridor habitues. Hundreds spend the entire morning in the lobbies, eagerly waiting for announcements from the offices of the
Executive.
OLD EMPLOYES THERE
Former civic employes, form large part of the number, and with or without supporters, wait for the newly elected aldermen in the hopes that their chances for reinstatement may be helped.
The aldermen's room is also the scene of much activity, and a special constable is constantly on guard to maintain order.
Not the least crowded part of the building, however, is the approach to the Mayoral suite, where crowds wait for the return of the mayor to his offices. News that the mayor will not be in his office for the day does not seem to discourage them, for they maintain their vigil in the hopes that the mayor will, after all, pay a visit to the City Hall.
In the meantime, many civic employes are on tenterhooks as rumors circulate that this one or that is stated for removal from office. A gradual and complete reorganization of the entire civic fabric has been promised by the new administration, and until this is completed, the uncertainly will prevail.
DP x DC AU where the entire JL thinks Danny a dead high school student tragically still haunting his school and pretending to live out the life he never had but he’s just a fucking teacher at Casper High
Reasons they think this:
Danny’s ghost form is permanently 14. Reasonable enough for them to think he’s a high schooler, considering he looks like a high schooler
His schedule operates around a standard school schedule (only free in the afternoons, weekends, and holidays)
Occasionally slips up and mentions “school” as a location (“back at school”, “i was by the school”)
He seems to have a lot of beef with high schoolers, like, as a concept (because he is a teacher. tell me high school teachers do not have beef with The Concept of High Schoolers)
Danny teaches science at Casper High, mostly ectobiology and other science classes. He absolutely loves his job except when he hates his job because he has to cancel class because one of his ghost buddies is tearing up city hall to get his attention or whatever. His identity is kind of an open secret in Amity where We Pretend We Don’t Know Mr. Fenton Is Phantom And He Doesn’t Give Us A Pop Quiz.
Danny CAN change his ghostly form. In Amity he shows up as an adult ghost but he had the Brilliant Idea to disguise his identity by appearing as a 14 year old to the JL, also to lean into the timelessness of his ghost form, because he’s been reported as a 14 year old for over a decade now.
Danny doesn’t know the JL thinks he’s haunting his old high school or something. This is because his a) lying and b) observation skills have not improved since he first died. He thinks he has them fully convinced he’s an immortal being from like, 1000 BC, a la Captain Marvel. He does not.
