Tumblr media
Happy Hump Day, tumblrs! I feel as if I have been MIA for a hot minute, but as usual it’s life getting in the way. I’m adulting for a lot of folks in my life right now, which doesn’t leave much time for Robin and what she wants to do. Toss in a job search, a carpal tunnel flare-up, and a car accident (no injuries, cosmetic damage which requires more time (it gonna take effort and rental car set-up to  make my baby pretty again) and a deductible), and … yeah.
However, I am working as best I can on getting stories out of my head and onto the screen; not a lot of snippets but plenty of synopses below the cut if anyone is interested.
Gossip Girls (inspired by CFCW’s #YouGoGirl event): No way will I finish this story by May 4 (Star Wars Day, yay!), hence the “inspired by”.
Queen Riley of Cordonia is having a much-needed, long-awaited brunch with her girls Annabelle Parsons and Yu the Chinese Waitress. There’ll be virgin mimosas, reminiscing on how their friendships began, decent food, a Riam Riley-style breakdown of the Princes’ true parentage, and Riley the Single Mother dealing with three boys who have no idea of public decorum. TCW’s Princess Marguerite may or may not make an appearance.
Fingers: For #WorldWhiskeyDay, this is a compilation of PB characters with a common denominator using liquor to soothe hurts, douse anger, and celebrate milestones.
Waiting Room (#Not Choices):  Pop culture icon Jerry Springer and the woman behind the catalyst of the Civil Rights Movement, Carolyn Bryant died on the same day. What if the Ringmaster and the Architect found themselves alone in the afterlife’s waiting room and held a conversation while awaiting the ultimate judgement?
A/N: This story will deal with mature subject matter and may contain offensive language (racial slurs apropos of the time period). This may or may not be posted here on tumblr; expect appropriate tagging and warnings if it is.
Eat Pray Love (tentative title) This is an ambitious what-if where Riley leaves Cordonia after the latest attack by the Sons of Earth. With Drake. The King of Cordonia and his Queen prepare to battle a new foe who is determined to unseat them, and only one person can help them. But will they?
Untarnished Silver: A celebration of King Liam and 25 years of Rys rule by the country, it’s citizens, family, and friends.
I also have other irons in the fire: Object of Affection, Chapter 6 of the DC AU series, The Poisoned Apple, UnRomance non-con, and possibly Thievery Corporation, the first chapter of Catch Me if You Can (a gang of art thieves matching wits with Interpol; #it’s choices), chapter 2 of Streets of New York, and chapter 2 of One Night Stand.
I do hope everyone is well, or at least making it through okay. Life can be hard and come at you fast. Take care of you, okay? Updates (if not full-blown chapters/stories) will be posted as they become available.
See you soon!

WARNING: extremely long poorly written post ! dbd skin/character concepts ive been thinking about tonight/i just want to see bc some of these are based on these being easy ideas and others being impractical that i just wanna see Nemesis: this is brought on by my 1. dislike of his blighted skin and 2. realization of what a missed opportunity it is to not give him a Mr. X skin, its literally perfect they're both tyrants with almost the exact same build, only issue is X's gloves :/ i don't see a way to make nemmie's visible infection rate work or his tentacle make sense so i admit that's an issue, but... maybe his late game look could work better? sadly that does get rid his iconic look i'd actually want for the skin tho hgvbhjbvhb 2nd concept i have for nemmie is impractical and would possibly better as a skin for a non RE killer but i'd just love to see it and that's a RE1 tyrant skin, i just love the original tyrant design Wesker: imo an impractical skin i just want to see wld be his re5 final boss design, he just looks fucked up and i love it hvbhjhbhjhb Misc: 4: i only have one full idea and that's the plaga knights for knight, it just works really well hbhjhbghjhb 7: i absolutely love the idea of a re7 eveline skin for sadako/onryo but that's licensed on licensed so yknow, not gonna work hgvhjhgvhb, a lucas baker skin for legion would actually be so cool but they already have hunk, his build fits perfect for frank tho WAHHHHh i want that rlly bad now hes so yucky i love him hvhjhgbhb, marguerite baker while itd a be a stretch would be a really fucking cool skin for plague, her lantern would fit perfectly for plague's weapon and she could spit out bugs instead of vomit (i know that like, isnt something that go through the effort to do, i just think it's really cool hgvhjhgbh) and lastly jack baker would work really well for trapper, he honestly just fits perfectly ^^ 8: another licensed on licensed skin that wouldn't work but i love the idea of, donna beneviento/her doll angie for chucky, it'd genuinely work so well, just like in the game shed be in the background while angie takes front stage as chucky doing the killing, donna only actually appearing when picking up a surv just like charles ghost does for chucky, another legion skin idea,, (i love legion jhbhjhb) the dimitrescu daughters i think would really work well as skins for them but im also thinking theyd work for nurse! i feel like consider lady d's popularity shed be a skin people would want but i genuinely just don't see anyone she'd work for? plus her height makes things,, difficult jhbhjhbgh, i do have an idea for moreau! i think blight would work perfectly! lastly mother miranda... she'd have to be a skin for plague i think, but i could see nurse working too, i prefer plague tho hvbhjhbhb Pig: honestly i think she wouldnt be that hard to modify but that's probably just my lack of game design understanding, i think these concepts fall more into a "i just want to see these" mindset but i rlly think they're reasonable, i think a john kramer skin would be rlly good, already got his cloack basically modeled bvbhjhgbvhb, i also think in the same vein a hoffman skin would be rlly cool but i think thatd require a whole remodel Survivor concepts: Saw: i would've liked to see ppl like adam and lawrence or daniel (i love him but he rlly isnt important enough hghh) RE: 1: barry :3 i just love barry <3 4: ashley <3 she deserves to be in the game as a skin at least imo 5: excella gionne, shes an antagonist tho so i dunno, josh stone! i like josh a lot and i'd love if he were there 7/8: ethan winters! i really would love to see ethan in the game, i am a huge mia fan so i gotta say i would be so fucking happy with a re7 mia survivor with like a re8 look skin but i 100% want her base design to be re7, lastly just a skin of chris's re8 look :3

Welcome to the 4th installment of 15 Weeks of Phantom, where I post all 68 sections of Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, as they were first printed in Le Gaulois newspaper 114 yeas ago.
In today’s installment, we have Part III of Chapter 1: “Est-ce le fantôme?” (“Is It the Phantom?”), as well as Part I of Chapter 2: "La Marguerite Nouvelle" ("The New Marguerite"). I've included it as a single panel, and as two panels for easier reading.
This section was first printed on Monday, 27 September, 1909.
For anyone following along in David Coward’s translation, the text starts at "The fact is, no one ever discovered how Joseph Buquet died" in Chapter 1 and goes to, “In aristocratic circles, all the dowager ladies noticed this handsome young man and pitied him in advance for the hardships which lay in store” in Chapter 2.
There are some differences between the standard 1st edition text and the Gaulois text. In this section, these include:
1) Mercier's line: "oubliez-le pour ce soir" in the Gaulois text becomes "n'en parlez point" in the 1st edition.
2) Compare in Le Gaulois: "l'Opéra-Comique venait de reprendre après..." to the 1st edition: "l'Opéra-Comique venait de reprendre longtemps après..."
3) Compare in Le Gaulois: "La salle tout entière, debout, hurlante et trépidante, comme prise de folie, avait salué des mille clameurs..." to the 1st edition: "La salle tout entière avait salué des mille clameurs..."
4) Minor differences in punctuation and capitalization.
Click here to see the entire edition of Le Gaulois from 27 September, 1909. This link brings you to page 3 of the newspaper — Le Fantôme is at the bottom of the page in the feuilleton section. Click on the big green arrow buttons towards the top of the webpage to turn the pages of the newspaper, and click on the magnifying glass icon at the top left to zoom.

Catwoman during the Golden Age of comic books
Tumblr media
Reading list + reviews
#1 Batman (March 1940) issue 1: "The Cat"
I decided to read every Catwoman comic book in history and of course I'll start with Batman #1 where she makes her first appearence.
She is revealed as the well-known criminal of the underworld: The Cat, someone even Batman says he heard stories about. The moment we first meet Selina (aside from her strong personality) two things are clear to us about her... or three:
1) She is a great thief;
2) She is great with disguises;
... and,
3) Batman is a big simp for her.
I think we tend to forget just how good she is with disguises. We never learn "The Cat"'s true identity in this issue, just the fake identity she impersonated in this heist: Mrs. Peggs. With her great skills she manages to fool everyone on the yacht where this story takes place into believing she is just a harmless old lady.
On a side note, we also see a glimpse of her, let's say, modus operandi. We don't know exactly how she got in contact with Denny Travers, we don't know if he hired her or if "The Cat" herself, (interested in his aunt's necklace) found him, realized he was interested in it as well, and proposed a deal to get it together.
Either way we get to know a clever and beautiful young woman with a strong reputation amongst criminals in the Gotham underworld (entirely made up of men at this point) and great at her job, wether we are talking about stealing priceless emerald necklaces or hearts.
#2 Batman (June 1940) issue 2: "The Joker Meets the Cat-Woman"
This issue is, for some reason, less known compared to issues 1 and 3 but I still think it's very important for Catwoman's early characterization. Let's start by saying that this is the first time we see the name "Cat-woman" in her comic book history, that her master of disguise trait is still present and that we see her, once again, using a man to get what she wants... but the thing I want to focus on the most is her interaction with Robin and Joker.
I think that some writers (one in particular) working on recent comic books really need to read this issue instead of giving new readers the idea Catwoman and Joker ever had comic book history together. Catwoman was never nearly close to Joker's ideas or methods. Compared to every other villain introduced in these early issues, she really stands out for being a non violent, very talented thief, in no way a killer. She was this early ready, and without second thoughts, to give up her loot in order to save Robin's life. She is shown to be specially protective over Robin, doing her best to keep him safe until Batman's arrival. This almost motherly trait will appear again in future comics.
#3 Batman (September 1940) issue 3: "The Batman vs. the Cat-Woman"
We see more of "The Cat" and the way she works, either for herself or for the people who hire her, to whom she asks a quite generous share. We see how her excellent skills are making the police lose credibility and we realize that Gordon's hostility towards Catwoman has ancient roots.
The two most prominent things in this issue are Catwoman's first, let's call it "catsuit", ever seen in a comic book (although, for now, it's just a furry mask shaped to resemble a realistic cat's head) and the first kiss Batman and Catwoman share in their long and iconic relationship.
(By the way, you know, this is Batman's first kiss in general ever since Detective Comics 27)
#4 Batman (May 1942) issue 10: "The Princess of Plunder"
We jump to issue 10 to see the Catwoman in action once again, introduced for the first time with the title of "Princess of Plunder". This time The Cat has a name: Marguerite Tone and, posing as a hostess during high society events, has started an illegal business of lost and found items she would first steal from her guests and then return them in exchange of money. This issue highlights her cleverness in studying and executing her robberies, also thanks to the help of the first four henchmen we see working for her (the simple concept of a woman giving orders to men in the 40s is really special to me).
Even if this is just her fourth chronological appearance we already have the idea of a strong, clever woman who doesn't follow anyone orders and acts according to her personal wishes and ideas, other than being a good leader. But we also see a bit of her attraction and romantic interest towards the Batman and for a brief moment we see a, let's say, "preview" of the dilemma that characterizes her the most: does she really fit the "criminal" side of the spectrum?
It's also nice to see the second time in history Batman and Catwoman shared a kiss after Batman issue 3.
#5 World's Finest Comics (May 1942) issue 6: "The Secret of Bruce Wayne"
This issue features just a really small Catwoman cameo, still in her very first catsuit but the only thing she says is a nice summary of the relationship between her and Batman.
#6 Batman (March 1943) issue 15: "Your Face Is Your Fortune"
This time we meet the Cat under another name: Elva Barr and we are presented with her daily routine as a hard worker at a beauty salon. We see how she lives the normal life of an average girl and we wonder, along with Bruce , if this means she eventually decided to give up her crimes as the Cat-woman ... of course, this is just what she wants us to think: in truth her job only made it easier for her to "steal" her customers' looks and voice in order to use them for her robberies. In the first few pages we see Catwoman's first nameless pet cat and we have a first highlight of Bruce's interest, as a detective, in the Cat-woman's mystery. Before this issue we've seen Catwoman feeling some sort of romantic attraction towards Batman , in this issue she falls in love with Bruce Wayne, to the point of telling Batman she could even give up her crimes for him. To this, a flattered Batman decides to play along with it, and with the second 'oops' followed by an "accidental" tripping in just 5 issues of Catwoman's appearances, Batman, as Bruce, starts dating Elva Barr and the two get engaged (even though Bruce already has a relationship with Linda Page). The Cat-woman soon starts doubting Bruce's feelings for her and, disguised as Linda, finds out the truth by deceiving Bruce. This makes her change her mind about going straight and this eventually leads to Batman arresting her (for the first time).
#7 Batman (April 1944) issue 22: "The Duped Domestics"
... I wish I could skip this issue... but I keep reminding myself we are talking about literature from 80 years ago...
Anyways, Catwoman assumes another identity: Belinda the maid who is making all the butlers in the neighborhood fall in love with her to manipulate information out of them she can use to plan robberies in their masters' mansions... including Alfred. To hit on her Alfred will say he knows Batman and even steals Bruce's spare suit when she asks him to make her meet Batman. I don't even want to mention the ending of this issue that kind of calls back to the infamous "quiet or papa spank" Batman tells her in issue 1... but unfortunately this won't be the last time we see Catwoman dating... not so young men.
[Detective Comics (June 1946) issue 112: "The Case Without a Crime"
DISCLAIMER: the Catwoman, the character as we've known her in previous issues, doesn't appear here, just her costume worn by Corinne, a seamstress involved in a "case without a crime". Still, I think this issue is worth mentioning because it marks a first evolution of Catwoman's cat-suit. The furry cat-head is gone now and we finally have a prototype of one of her most iconic looks: purple dress and green cape.
Also, if I have to be completely honest, I might like this costume even better.]
#8 Batman (June 1946) issue 35: "Nine Lives has the Catwoman!"
As anticipated in my last post, Catwoman reappears wearing a new lilac catsuit with a simpler (and cuter) mask design this time. Her hair has a new shade of blond as we see her escaping from prison (where she is mocked by her fellow female inmates) and trying to win back her henchmen's trust by setting-up a non-existent power: the legendary nine lives of a cat. Speaking of cats, this is the first time we see Hecate, her first recurring pet cat with a name... and not a common name either! Hecate is, in fact, the name of the greek goddess of magic and witchcraft. Hecate is not the only Catwoman associate that receives a name in this issue. For instance two of her henchmen, her most faithful ones, now have names: Mike and Pete, whose precious help let Catwoman build her new hideout, the Cat-acombs, a maze built in order to trap Batman and Robin the moment they step in.
I want to note down a couple of last things: the first one is Batman chasing Catwoman on top of the dirigible... it reminded me of their usual rooftops chases in a particular way. The second one is that we see a Cat-O-Nine Tails in this issue (unfortunately I couldn't fit it among the other panels)! It's Batman who uses it to disarm her but still I feel like this can count as a first appearance of her good old whip as her weapon of choice.
#9 Batman (February 1947) issue 39: "A Christmas Tale!"
This Christmas issue, in which Catwoman is mentioned on the cover page for the first time, begins with Batman and Robin being sent by Gordon to investigate the disappearance of three pet cats: a red persian cat, a long-fur white cat and a tail-less manx cat. One thing the three of them had in common was their owners love for them. Batman and Robin will find out that Catwoman "catnapped" those cats in order to perform a couple of capers by using those cat's peculiarities.
After first seeing a Cat-O-Nine Tails in the last issue we analyzed, we finally see it in her hand now, noticing how it has become a part of her costume as she wears it around her waist like a belt. The thing about this issue that interests me the most, though, is Catwoman stopping her henchman from killing Batman. It's especially interesting if we think that in issue 35 she almost killed him with a gun. I like this characterization a lot. Lastly, in a part I unfortunately couldn't fit among the other panels, we almost had a kiss under the mistletoe... almost.
#10 Detective Comics (April 1947) issue 122: "The Black Cat Crimes"
This issue is rather important: not only Catwoman makes her first, official, appearance in the Detective Comics run, not only she also finally debuts on the cover page but this is the first time we see the (almost) definitive version of her iconic pre-Crisis catsuit... and the news aren't even over yet! Her iconic Kitty Car also makes its first appearance in this comic book: a vehicle designed to outspeed the very Batmobile itself. There are two main things I want to highlight in this issue in which Catwoman builds three capers on the old saying that "black cat" also means "bad luck": first of all that she herself makes her own gadgets (like the Claw Gloves that appear in this issue), and then that once again, after Batman 2, we see her worrying about Robin whenever he is in dangerous situations, like on top of the Statue of Liberty (or is it what will later be known as "Lady Gotham" or "Lady Justice of Gotham") in this issue. Her worries extends to Batman to the point of making Robin remark, with a smile, how she is really bad at hiding her fondness towards him.
#11 Batman (August 1947) issue 42: "Claws of the Catwoman!"
In this issue (which marks the first cover appearance of Catwoman in the Batman run) Catwoman takes inspiration for her capers from a book called: "Famous Felines: Immortal Cats of Fiction", which lists some of the most famous cat-tales in history. We can find the following references in this issue:
- "Ten Little Kittens"; a nursery rhyme.
- "Puss in Boots"; an italian fairy tale.
- "Dick Whittington and His Cat"; a british tale.
- "The Black Cat"; a short story by Edgar Allan Poe.
- The Cheshire Cat from "Alice in Wonderland".
- "The Cat and The Fiddle"; another nursery rhyme.
This issue also gives us: Catwoman in cowgirl boots, the name of another one of her henchmen: Slug, a new full body-catsuit, another chase with Catwoman that ends in Batman and Robin getting caught, Batman dancing at a cat-themed party, an epic fight against Catwoman on top of a giant violinist-cat statue... and another instance of Catwoman rejecting killing and caring about Batman and Robin's lives. She walls them without their utility belts but she cares about letting air flow so they wouldn't suffocate and implies that she was going to free them as soon as she was done with her crimes (and leaves Hecate on purpose to give them a chance to escape).
#12 Batman (February 1948) issue 45: "The Lady Rogues!"
Okay, well... If I worked at DC the first think I'd do would be a remake for this issue.
Just like the last issue I analyzed, this issue is very interesting because it includes mentions of well-known tales in real or fictional history. This time the focus is on all the most famous, or rather, infamous "lady rogues" like Lucrezia Borgia, Medusa, Circe, Lady Macbeth, "Snow White"'s Wicked Queen and Delilah. The extremely successful book that collects all of their stories by Neil Weston, however, doesn't include the name of someone who is proving herself to be at least worth a mention: Catwoman, this is why, out of spite, she decides to ruin the performances of Gala Kazon, the actress chosen to play every villainess from that book.
As always I like to point out all the abilities that Catwoman shows in the issue I'm analyzing, but, this time, the thing that impressed me the most about her wasn't the way she outwits Batman and Robin, managing to escape from their pursuit and showing once again to be an extremely smart and a very capable strategist and quick thinker, or Catwoman showing off another one of her flawless disguises: the beautiful Snow White together with her seven dwarfs, or even other skills like riding a bike or climbing... it was her comebacks and snarky remarks. She is particularly witty and humorous in this issue and that might be the part of Catwoman I like the most.
#13 Batman (July 1948) issue 47: "Fashions In Crime!"
I'm not going to lie, this might be my number one favorite comic book from the Golden Age.
Another prison breakout (thanks to Hecate and the content of her "utility collar"), another fake identity (Madame Moderne, whose blonde wig and attitude inevitably remind me of Selina from Batman: The Animated Series, still far in the future) and another clever way to steal jewels and valuable clothes from wealthy ladies. Which way? Well, launching a new fashion magazine all by herself that gains extreme popularity in no time giving her enough influence to bring wealthy people to expose their valuable fashion-related possessions by declaring them "The Style of The Month".
Catwoman is shown to be so resourceful in this issue: not only she is a great thief, mistress of disguise, lithe and athletic, able to set up her own prison break, with enough of aces up her sleeve to engineer all her thefts in success and still with henchmen at her service, but she is also a tasteful and extremely talented artist, stylist, publisher and marketer, all by herself.
Sure, today's Catwoman would rather die than own and wear a real fur coat but still this issue is a real pearl and it also includes another stolen kiss to Batman, their third one in comic book history!
#14 Batman (December 1950) issue 62: "The Secret Life of the Catwoman!"
I personally believe this is one of the most important issues for Catwoman's development in her comic book history.
We are talking about the issue where, after all the other names Catwoman has used in the past, she finally introduces herself as "Selina Kyle", the definitive name for her civilian alter-ego. But the name also comes with her first backstory: a stewardess who survived a plane crush but getting amnesia due to the trauma, only remembering her connection to cats due to her father formerly owning a pet shop.
But there's a lot more to point out in this issue!
First and foremost how Mister X remarks Catwoman's aversion to killing, since he needs her help to execute his "jobs" without any kill and he noticed that she is an expert at robbing people without even hurting them by using cats, then how selflessly, even before regaining her memories and rejecting her life of crime, she is ready to face death in order to save somebody else, Batman in this and in many more cases in the future, and lastly how, although being introduced as a rogue, she is already helping Batman and Gordon on the side of justice rejecting crime. It doesn't last for long, but she is the first rogue to receive this kind of development and it's a good reminder of how, even in the Golden Age, it was very hard to label Selina as either a hero or a villain.
#15 Batman (June 1951) issue 65: "Catwoman-- Empress of the Underworld"
The cover for this issue is one of my favorites because it encapsulates Selina's innate tendency to be difficult to "label" and/or "categorize" as well as Batman's consequent puzzlement, interest and even curiosity to understand and "solve" her. This is one of the BatCat couple's most recognizable traits but it's nice to remember it has always been like this, even back in the Golden Age, although nowadays most people tend to remember her as nothing more than an ordinary villain. But she was never just an "ordinary villain" and this issue is a proof to that: we left her in issue 62 revealing to us her real name and backstory, deciding to move past her crime-life and starting again by opening a pet-shop, thereby following her father's steps. At her shop, she receives the visit of a slumlord who has been evading arrest for years due to lack of proof known as "Whale" Morton who taunts her and invites her to turn back to her life as a villainess. Although she completely rejects the offer, Gotham is victim of a series of cat-related crimes and newspapers point the finger at Catwoman calling her the main suspect for these crimes. Gradually, everyone begins to suspect her, even herself as a few evidences lead Selina to believe that she might suffer from more episodes of amnesia in which she committs crimes as the Catwoman without being left with any memory of it.
The only one who never stops believing in her is Batman.
Batman's undying faith in Catwoman is the thing I want to focus on the most when talking about this issue. Even though Robin was the first one to have lost faith in her, Batman never stopped believing, or, at least, hoping, that there was a good explaination for what was happening and that she had a plan after all... until his hope was fulfilled in the end: it's revealed she was doing everything in order to frame Morton and finally get him arrested.
Lastly, I want to at least mention Selina's cleverness and courage in putting up this entire plan all by herself and her incredible agility and strenght as she climbs on top of the ZBC building with nothing more than her claws.
#16 Batman (February 1952) issue 69: "The King of the Cats!"
Although Selina has already left aside her past life as The Catwoman, Gotham finds itself dealing with a new series of cat-related crimes yet again, this time by the hands of a new villain calling himself The King of The Cats who also began sending gifts at "Selina's Pet Shop", causing a misunderstanding that makes Batman and Robin believe that their new foe might be Selina's lover. We see him driving her Kitty-Car and she also seems to know him personally as she calls him with his real name: Karl, other than trying her best to protect him from Batman and Robin. In the end we learn the truth: Selina is actually Karl's sister who just wanted to see him reform just like she did.
But my favorite part of this story must be the ending: Batman and The King of the Cats end up in two different cages, trapped with ferocious tigers and Selina has to choose on which beast use the last knockout gas pellet left. She chooses to put the tiger attacking Karl to sleep but she refuses to leave Batman alone in his cage, although she is confident he has the ability to save himself on his own, thus she jumps in his cage, fighting alongside him. I love seeing how she was always a selfless, brave and heroic woman, always ready to make sacrifices, since the very beginning of her comic book history.
#17 Detective Comics (January 1954) issue 203: "The Crimes of the Catwoman!"
Although this is the issue in which Selina Kyle, after a short but extremely important arc (in which she gave up her life as a thief to serve justice helping Batman and the police), wears once again her Catwoman costume to reprise her characteristic cat crimes, I feel like this issue is very important for the relationship between the Bat and the Cat.
Selina makes this choice after a continuous and long lasting torment inflicted to her by the media and members of the criminal underworld who keep reminding her of her past life as a criminal. We see Batman as the only one who doesn't judge her and the issue even starts with Batman protecting her from the upteenth pair of crooks who came at her pet shop to mock her, which I find really cute. Batman is shown to be really worried about her and saddened by her return to crime, even Robin and Gordon make comments on these feelings Batman has been showing for Catwoman. On her part, Catwoman can't bring herself to hurt Batman and doesn't let her crooks kill him like they wanted, which makes Batman and Robin question her feelings towards him. Batman also makes a lot of comments on Selina's clevernss and she even outsmarts him at some point!
With Selina's return to crime we also see the return of some of her old accessories and equipment like her notorious whip, the Cat-O-Nine Tails and her iconic Kitty Car, as well as now ones, like a Cat-apult, a Catboat and a Cat's Cradle she uses as a bridge during a new rooftop chase with Batman. We also see her finding herself a new lair, her new Catacomb, and, for the first time, a Catsignal, shines on the skies of Gotham... and just like in the past, a new ambiguous fate for her in the ending of the issue that makes us wonder if cats really have nine lives.
#18 Batman (June 1954) issue 84: "The Sleeping Beauties of Gotham City!"
Fully returned to her life as a criminal but thought to be dead by most people, including Batman and Robin, Selina Kyle returns to her pet shop claiming that there is no evidence to prove she is the woman behind the Catwoman mask... but she is secretly planning a heist inspired by the fairy tale of Snow White.
Everything begins with Selina being chosen, among a total of 100.000 applicants, as one of the five contestans for the "Queen For A Day" beauty contest, sponsored by the W. Ross Cosmetics Co. while, suspicious, Batman and Robin try to catch Catwoman in the act of committing a crime so they can put her in jail once and for all. The dynamic duo fails to catch her in her attempt to steal a Dalivarius violin at the Museum of Music but intend to confront her the day after... only to find out she somehow fell into a deep sleep catching huge media attention, while medical professionals, who got interested in her case, began studying this yet undiscovered illness by full-time watching over her dormant body through a glass showcase. But, to Batman and Robin's puzzlement, while Selina Kyle has an ironclad alibi, Catwoman is still at large committing crimes, also drugging the other contestants and trapping them in the same kind of deep sleep Selina still hasn't awakened from. And it's just as Batman sees Catwoman coming out of one of the last contestants' apartment (through what Robin calls a "Cat-Walk") that she manages to outsmart him once again and trap him. When he finally manages to escape from Catwoman's trap she has already been crowned as the winner of the beauty contest but he's still on time to prevent her from putting her hands on the prize (that she had agents in Europe switch with imported diamonds).
One thing that I really love about this issue is the part where Batman warns the GCPD about Catwoman because:
1) it's a nice summary of all her gadgets, skills and abilities;
2) ... Batman... where exactly do you keep that HUGE Catwoman painting?
#19 Detective Comics (September 1954) issue 211: "The Jungle Cat Queen!"
This issue marks Catwoman's last appearance for around a decade due to the Detective Comics and Batman titles adopting the strict Comics Code regulations which saw Batman flirting with a criminal who would frequently elude arrest as "too problematic" and, possibly, also to give Batman more love interests like Vicki Vale and Kathy Kane. Yet, this story, which may count as a temporary farewell, leaves us with a smart and skillful Catwoman who still isn't evil enough to kill.
The story begins with Catwoman flying away on her Catplane, which makes its first appearance in this issue, after stealing a shipment of diamonds. Batman and Robin guess her destination and follow Catwoman on their Batplane towards a tropical island, but their aircraft gets heavily damaged by the Catplane so they have to make an emergency landing on said island. There they make the acquaintance of John Jarrow and his colleagues who are working at a diamonds mine... and, unfortunately, working with Catwoman too. They manage to deceive the dinamic duo and even trap them eventually. When Selina appears she is accompained by a panther, a lion, a leopard and a tiger and suggests to let the beasts hunt down Batman and Robin, stripped of their suits and utility belts stopping the "miners" from trying to kill them. While escaping the felines the dinamic duo is able to spot Catwoman's new Catacomb, an ancient cat-temple in which she's keeping all her beasts. Batman guesses they must be tamed circus felines so he uses taming techniques to make them go back to their cages. John and the others arrive and with the help of a giant gorilla manage to subdue Batman and stun Robin. The "miners" want to kill Batman by throwing him off a waterfall and Catwoman suggests to put back on him his costume and utility belt to make all evidences of their involvement in the homicide disappear. She reassures them she took away all of his bat-gadgets from his utility belt before giving it back to him... except, she didn't. This helps Batman freeing himself, find salvation and find out what was going on on that island: there is no mine on that island, they were just bringing there stolen diamonds from all over the world and pretend there was one. With Robin's help they manage to catch all the criminals except for Catwoman, who escapes with the help of her tiger, then leaving on her Catplane.
Her choice to save Batman's life by leaving all his gadgets in his utility belt makes the dinamic duo point out once again how she just can't bring herself to kill.
[Batman (October 1958) issue 119: "The Secret of Batman Island!"
As I already mentioned in my last post, after Detective Comics issue 211, Catwoman, a.k.a. Selina Kyle, stops appearing in comic books for around a decade.
I still wanted to mention this cameo she makes in 1958: she is remembered as one of Batman's most relevant foes in the Batman Museum on A. K. Barnaby's "Batman Island".]
[Detective Comics (1963 - 1964)
- Issue 311: "Challenge of the Cat-Man!"
- Issue 318: "The Cat-Man Strikes Back"
- Issue 325: "The Strange Lives of the Cat-Man"
Thomas Blake, a.k.a. the Cat-Man, is the closest thing we have to a Catwoman in this period of comic books. He explicitly states to have been inspired by her into becoming a cat-themed criminal, remembering her as one of Batman's greatest foes". He even makes a cat-suit (with supernatural powers, just like his own) for Batwoman, whom he has a crush on, hoping she would join him becoming his Cat-Woman, which happens even if just to trick Cat-Man.
He basically copies her entire aesthetic committing cat-related crimes, driving a "Cat-Car" and calling his hideout a "Catacomb"... everything except his suit, which still looks pretty different from hers, and his attitude...
P.S.: about the blatant sexism... Tommy, dear, this "mere woman" kicks your butt every time she crosses your path, what does that make you? 💅🏼]
#20 Batman (December 1965) issue 176: "Complete Sunday Newspaper Syndicated Story"
This short story is actually the reprint of a newspaper comic strip released in 1946 and it shows Catwoman challanging Batman to catch her in a chase across the United States.
Unafraid of Batman, Catwoman decides to take advantage of his interest in putting her behind bars and proposes an extremely well-crafted plan to crimelords whose crooks are becoming more and more terrified of Batman thus making committing crimes more difficult.
Her plan consists in ruining Batman's grim reputation by sharing with different newspapers a detailed route across the USA, inviting Batman to catch her. In this way she can show the world how the frightening Batman can't catch a thief like her even while knowing all her movements in detail.
This might be one of my Golden Age favorite moments, for many reasons:
- Catwoman being one of the few characters being completely unafraid of Batman is a very important element of their dynamic;
- Batman calls her a "master of disguise" in this story and he is so right: Catwoman keeps changing her disguise every time she appears publicly on transports and Batman has to do the same in order to spot her and I think this is what makes this story so fun;
- for the same reason this story has probably the greatest fashion moments in the entire Golden Age era and I really love seeing Catwoman looking so good in each panel;
- I also think that Catwoman's characterization is done perfectly here, from her snark to her cleverness: I never get tired of seeing Catwoman outsmarting Batman!

this is an appreciation/thirst post for marguerit maida, the former mongolian defense force badass lady who once fought and defeated a reaper with her bare hands while hundreds of meters underwater and running out of o2 and then lived inside its corpse for weeks after and now has her own custom mech suit, a polar bear/alligator/dog pet named Preston, the previously mentioned reaper's skull in her living room, owns the only confirmed toilet on 4546b, is secretly a total softie for nerds, blows up bases of the evil capitalist empire for funsies, and whose darkest secret is that she once craved a salad. iconic

TOP 12 SNOW WHITE PORTRAYALS
Tumblr media
@princesssarisa @superkingofpriderock @sunlit-music @mademoiselle-princesse @amalthea9 @theancientvaleofsoulmaking @astrangechoiceoffavourites
Lips red as blood. Skin white as snow. Hair black as ebony. The fairest woman of all.
Snow White is one of the most iconic fairy tale characters ever created. And also  one of the hardest to portray. This happens because, the story is less about her as a person, and more about following her exploration of the world and how this world reacts to her. The tale calls her a princess, but really she is more meant to be a common everygirl for a variety of readers and audiences to see themselves in. So the greatest challenge to portray the character becomes how to make at the same time universally relatable, and an individual character, and today, i’d like to share my favorite portrayals, that camed closer in acomplishing this goal.
12º Laura Berlin in Sechs Auf Einen Streich (2009)
Berlin’s Snow White acts as an outgoing, playfull young lady who deep down is trying to deal with the longing for her dead mother. And then, her father marries a new, vain and cruel woman, and sayed woman orders that the portrait of the previous queen be trown out, wich obviously makes the princess verbally snap against her father weak-willed and her tyranical stepmother. And then her father has a stroke and her stepmother orders her death. Here is a young lady in an emotinal turmoil and distress, wich makes her very relatable to audiences.
11º Nicola Stapleton and Sarah Paterson in Canon Movie Tales: Snow White (1987)
One of the first times that we see the fair princess explicitly growing up from child to young adult. Nicola Stapleton is probably more charismatic as child! Snow White, having more time on scene where she gets to sing with her father, explore the room where her stepmother keeps the magic mirror, until finally having to run trough the woods and meeting the dwarfs, but Sarah Paterson also makes adult! Snow White likable, singing about her desire to someday leave the dwarfs house because she is growing and may need her own space, and showing the doubt between fear and curiosity in her interactions with her disguised stepmother. This highlights more the themes of coming of age and confronting ones fears from the tale.
10º Yuri Amano/Donatella Fanfani/Eileen Stevens in The Legend of Snow White (1994)
In this italian-japanese coproduced anime, the twelve year old Snow White is an inquisitive, merry and kind girl, that has to adapt to a more scary reality when she has to run away from the castle to not be killed. At the dwarfs house, where she is so hungry and tired she takes all bread from a basket and sleeps for hours, she decides to give her hazelnuts and try to do shores to compensate for entering the house and eating the bread. Unfortunally, being a princess who lived in comfort all her life, she fails hard when she tries to do domestic shores, burning bread and cutting lettuce that she tought were garden plagues. But she is so sweet and kind, that it doesn’t matter. Conquering the affection of people for who she is, and not for what she can do in exchange, is the greatest strenght of this encarnation.
09º Elizabeth McGovern in Faerie Tale Theatre (1984)
A lonely girl who just wants some atention and love. Those are the characteristics that McGovern’s Snow White extablishes for herself in her first appearance, trying to impress her stepmother with juggling tricks learned with the Court Jester. Later, in the forest, when she is about to be stabbed, she prays to God for the soul of the Huntsman who is about to kill her, and to her surprise this act of kindness is what changes the Huntsman’s heart and convinces him to spare her life. In the woods she finds the dwarfs cottage, and can finally have friends to talk about things like her nostalgia for swiming in the castle moat/pit. She won’t feel alone again.
08º Kristin Kreuk in Snow White: The Fairest of them All (2001)
In this Hallmark TV Movie, Kreuk gives a 16 year old Snow White who searches friendship in garden gnomes. In a way, she expands the theme of loneliness explored by McGovern, and goes deeper about it, relating sayed loneliness with beauty: she is an awkward and melancholic person, who feels that people only care with her pretty appearance, but don’t actually come close to truly meet her as a person. In a lesser hand, this idea of a person who thinks being considered beautifull is hard could sound absurd and over dramatic, but the screenwriters and Kreuk’s sincere performance make it a compelling dilema.
07º Natalie Minko in Schneewitchen (1992)
An energetic fifteen year old, who likes to run around to play with the Court Jester, and mess up the kitchen while doing pancakes that glue in the ceiling. Minko’s Snow White is one of the few Snow White’s who is allowed to act as a normal teenager: she makes messes, she sometimes verbally fights with people, she constantly questions the adults around her, all the wille still being a genuinelly kind hearted person pursuing the path of truth.
06º Tamara Rojo in Emilio Aragon’s Blancanieves (2005)
I loved watching the DVD of this ballet production over and over as a kid. Trough dance movements, Tamara Rojo gives us a gracious and fun princess. Whetever she goes, a party will always start.
05º Adriana Caselotti in Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
My first portrayal of Snow White. The Disney version was raised working as a palace scullery maid, wich her stepmother hoped would make her ugly. But that didn’t work. She grows beautifull in body and soul: her singing voice is so sweet it is enough to make a dashing Prince fall in love with her, the animals are always engaged by her joyfull and sassy conversations, and she has a firm way of talking that assures a position of leadership among both the animals and the dwarfs who later befriend her. Really, she is awesome. What can i say about her that hasn’t been sayed already?
04º Marguerite Clark in Snow White (1916)
The version that inspired Walt Disney to make his version. Based on a 1912 stage play, this is the version that extablished being raised as a palace scullery maid as the reason Snow White is good with domestic tasks despite being a rich princess. Clark’s Snow White is also compassionate, sweet, romantic and dreamy, and she mix those qualities with some energy and spunkiness, being an almost wild girl.
03º Carol Heiss in Snow White and The Three Stooges (1961)
The sass, spunkiness and sweet romanticism are back, but with a new adition: an athletic hobby. Carol Heiss was originally a golden medal winner olimpic ice skater, and this movie was made to capitalize in her popularity at the time (along with reviving the Three Stooges popularity). So, we extablish in this version that the heroine who is linked to the snow loves the winter, and one of the most popular sports in this season. No other version before or after that did this, even tough its the most obvious and most awesome thing to do with the character. Ad to that the (uncredited) singing voice dubbed by Norma Zimmer, and you have one of the most complete portrayals of Snow White: she is beauty, she is grace, she can sing, she can cook and she can ice skate. She is the most interesting woman that ever lived.
02º Sakiko Tamagawa/Julie Maddalena in Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics (1989)
Orphaned from her mother at birth and having a father who is always too busy rulling the kingdom to pay attention to her, this version of Snow White grows up raised by a nurse named Doris, and playing on the garden with a young boy named Klaus. Her favorite pass time is to climb trees to pick apples, her favorite fruit. But one day her stepmother, who for years has been ignoring her, calls the princess to her chamber, and asks if she thinks herself to be most beautifull than the Queen. Annoyed with the absurd of the question, Snow White calls her stepmother out in her vanity. What follows is her running away, having to survive as a fugitive. Getting lost from her Klaus and stumbling in a root, she crawls for her life, until being saved by the seven dwarfs and their wolf friends. Time passes, and she finds a bit of fullfilment while slowly learning to do domestic chores to help the dwarfs, and finding friendship in the wolfs and a giant black bear. But she still craves to reunite with her friend Klaus and to find some love, while the Queen’s menace lures in the air.
And now the moment everyone was expecting... My number one favorite portrayal of Snow White is:
01º Camryn Manhein in The 10th Kingdom (2000)
I know what are you thinking: “Wait, a two episode cameo in a tv minisseries, instead of a protagonist, this is your favorite”? Yes. Yes, she is. In the Hallmark minisseries The 10th Kingdom, a young lady from the real world comes to the magical world to help to disenchant a Prince that has been turned into a dog. This dog prince is Snow White’s grandson. And then the heroes arrive at the Dragon Mountain in the 09th Kingdom, and Virginia has a conversation with the spirit of the late Snow White for counsel. And Snow White counsels Virginia by simply telling her story of once being an afrayed, lonely lost girl in the woods, finding new friends in the dwarfs, suffering three murder attempts from her stepmother, being aesleep for years with the poisoned apple in her troat, until the Prince’s servants stumbled with her casket so she could trow away the apple piece, so she could finally live happily ever after. While she narrates the tale, she says that she knew the danger presented by the ribbons, the comb and the apple, but she also knew that she could hide in the dwarfs cottage, afrayed to be hurt, forever. And her husband was a good man, but she saved herself from death. With that dialogue, Manheim’s sensitive and wise Snow White ressignified the fairy tale for me, making me appreciate better the story and her character. And that is why she my number one portrayal of the fairest princess of all.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: Elke Arendt in Schneewitchen (1955), Maresa Hörbiger in Schneewitchen (1971) and Elaine Bilstad as White Snow in Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child (1995).

Secret Tunnel~ & Four Angels: An Observation and a Theory
Another observation, the whole secret passage leading to the hole that happens to lead out Alcina’s hearth and into her chambers vaguely reminds me of those secret passages that nobility used to have so that their lovers could sneak in/out without others knowing.  There is no way she is fitting through there, so that narrow passage is not for her. --Though the bedroom could be Cassandra’s. It would explain the handcuffs, her lines about whether he would prefer to be taken alive or dead + talk of stringing him up and torturing him, there is also a large switch that could be involved with some sort of elaborate rigging system (I previously thought it might be some Jabba the Hutt style trapdoor thing- but now I am doubting that) since we do see Ethan elevated in a cut scene that takes place in that room. It would explain Alcina’s frustration with Cassandra’s game playing and Bela later talks about how Cassandra made a mess of things.  The bed, while luxuriously wide, is also too short to be for Alcina. The mission we are given after seeing the Duke is to find Alcina’s bedchambers- which would be odd if we were just in them. We also know from that scene released in the showcase that Lady Dimitrescu’s bedroom is waaayyy up high- Which leads to my theory on the Four Angels mentioned in the “Bust Room”. Since it is the angel of rage (you know, an emotion you might feel before tossing a vanity across the room) that is said to be looking down from on high- I believe that is Alcina. The angel of pleasure has “art” that is meant to be kept behind gilded doors- who is the sadist (as described by Capcom) that we have encountered most frequently in the main two levels of the house? That’s right, Cassandra. Miss “Yeess, yeeess” herself. She also mentions wanting to mount him on the walls (as in nail against the wall- wait-) The sad angel who lurks in the deep, dark places must be Bela [or the blonde- I’m still waiting for there to be a name mix up because she does not seem to fit the personality description given for her] because she is the main stalker in the dungeons it seems. She was also described as quiet- which I guess is code for sad in this case.  The angel of happiness who holds knowledge (?) - is most likely Daniela [or whoever the redhead is- see above] because she is the only one left- also she has a huge creepy smile in the Playstation Network icons. Maybe she stalks you in a big labyrinthine library? Ugh, I hope. That would be so cool. There was a theory that these busts were of the four house lords. Who knows, perhaps it is, but it seems to describe the four boss enemies’ main stalker zones. (In RE7 many of the stalkers had primary levels [with some variance] - Jack in the main house [for the most part], Marguerite in the old house, Lucas in his strange off-season haunt/escape room etc.) This is all theory and supposition, of course.
Back to the secret tunnel~~~ I can’t imagine Cassandra crawling through that either, so lycans, gentlemen and maidens- do with that what you will.

Dankira and its Saints
When I heard of Dankira ended its service yesterday, I think it's about time for them to show their feast days in this latest installment to commemorate this occasion. So here it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Merry Panic]
August 20 - Sora Asahi
St. Bernard of Clairvaux: 12th century French abbot and confessor, and a major leader in the revitalization of Benedictine monasticism through the nascent Order of Cistercians. There he preached an immediate faith, in which the intercessor was the Virgin Mary. In 1139, Bernard assisted at the Second Council of the Lateran. He subsequently denounced the teachings of Peter Abelard to the pope, who called a council at Sens in 1141 to settle the matter. Bernard was the first Cistercian placed on the calendar of saints, and was canonized by Pope Alexander III in 1174, and Pope Pius VIII bestowed Bernard the title of Doctor of the Church. His major shrine can be found in Troyes Cathedral.
March 20 - Mahiru Hinata
St. John Nepomucene (John of Nepomuk): 14th century priest and martyr who was drowned in the Vltava river at the behest of Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia (Czech Republic). Later accounts state that he was the confessor of the queen of Bohemia and refused to divulge the secrets of the confessional. On the basis of this account, John of Nepomuk is considered the first martyr of the Seal of the Confessional, a patron against defamation and, because of the manner of his death, a protector from floods and drowning. He is the patron saint of the Spanish Naval Infantry.
November 24 - Reiji Yano
The Vietnamese Martyrs: The Vatican estimates the number of Vietnamese martyrs at between 130,000 and 300,000. Pope St. John Paul II decided to canonize those whose names are known and unknown, giving them a single feast day. One of the most prominent person of the group is Andrew Dũng-Lạc, who was born to a peasant family and is ordained a priest in 1823. Many years later in 1998, he and the rest of the martyrs were canonized by Pope St. John Paul II. Among the number of the martyrs, there were 97 Vietnamese, 11 Dominican missionaries from Spain, and 10 French belonged to the Paris Foreign Mission Society; 59 were lay people and the rest of them are religious and or members of the clergy.

February 17 - Akira Shido
Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order: The seven holy founders consisted of Alexis Falconieri, Amadeus of the Amidei, Hugh dei Lippi Uggucioni, Benedetto dell' Antella, Gherardino di Sostegno, Buonfiglio dei Monaldi and Giovanni di Buonagiunta. On January 1888, Pope Leo XIII canonized all seven of them, and their feast was inserted in the General Roman Calendar for celebration on 11 February, the anniversary of the granting of canonical approval to the order in 1304. In the 1969 revision of the calendar, 17 February, the date of death of Alexis Falconieri was judged to be more appropriate.
December 11 - Noel Gekkoin
Pope St. Damasus I: 37th bishop of Rome who reigned for 18 years. He presided over the Council of Rome of 382 that determined the canon or official list of sacred scripture, and spoke out against major heresies in the church (including Apollinarianism and Macedonianism) and encouraged production of the Vulgate Bible with his support for Jerome. He helped reconcile the relations between the Church of Rome and the Church of Antioch, and encouraged the veneration of martyrs.
June 27 - Kei Kagemiya
Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Our Lady of Perpetual Succour): A Marian title represented in a celebrated 15th-century Byzantine icon also associated with the same Marian apparition. The icon is originated from the Keras Kardiotissas Monastery and has been in Rome since 1499, and today, it is permanently enshrined in the Church of Saint Alphonsus, where the official Novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help text is prayed weekly. In 1867, Pope Pius IX granted the image its Canonical Coronation along with its present title. The Redemptorist Congregation of priests and brothers are the only religious order currently entrusted by the Holy See to protect and propagate a Marian religious work of art. Due to promotion by the Redemptorist Priests since 1865, the image has become very popular among Roman Catholics, and modern reproductions are oftentimes displayed in residential homes, commercial establishments, and public transportation.

May 12 - Seito Tsubaki
Bl. Imelda Lambertini: Italian laywoman, virgin and mystic. Her parents were devout Catholics and were known for their charity and generosity to the underprivileged of Bologna. On her fifth birthday, she requested to receive Holy Eucharist; however the custom at the time was that children did not receive their First Holy Communion until it reached the age of fourteen. On the day of the vigil of the Ascension, she knelt in prayer and the 'Light of the Host' was reportedly witnessed above her head by the Sacristan, who then fetched the priest so he could see. After seeing this miracle, the priest felt compelled to admit her to receiving the Eucharist. Immediately after receiving it, Lambertini went back to her seat, and decided to stay after mass and pray. Later when a nun came to get Lambertini for supper, she found Lambertini still kneeling with a smile on her face. The nun called her name, but she did not stir, so she lightly tapped Imelda on the shoulder, at which Imelda collapsed to the floor dead. Beatified by Pope Leo XII in 1826, she is the patroness of First Communicants.
July 20 - Soma Yagami
St. Apollinaris of Ravenna: 1st century Syrian bishop and martyr, whom the Roman Martyrology describes as 'a bishop who, according to tradition, while spreading among the nations the unsearchable riches of Christ, led his flock as a good shepherd and honored the Church of Classis near Ravenna by a glorious martyrdom.' A noted miracle worker, Apollinaris is considered especially effective against gout, venereal disease and epilepsy. His relics are at the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo and the 6th century Benedictine Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, both in Ravenna and in Saint Lambert's church in Düsseldorf, Germany.
November 11 - Nozomu Miki
St. Martin of Tours: Confessor and the third bishop of Tours. One of the most familiar and recognizable Christian saints in Western tradition. Martin converted to Christianity at a young age and served in the Roman cavalry in Gaul, but left military service at some point prior to 361, when he became a disciple of Hilary of Poitiers, establishing the monastery at Ligugé. He is best known for the account of his using his military sword to cut his cloak in two, to give half to a beggar clad only in rags in the depth of winter. His shrine in Tours became a famous stopping-point for pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. He is the patron of beggars, wool-weavers and tailors, as well as the patron of the United States Army Quartermaster Corps even though he detested violence.

September 18 - Yukari Wakakusa
St. Joseph of Cupertino: Italian friar from the Conventual Franciscans, a branch of the Franciscan order. He was said to have been remarkably unclever, but prone to miraculous levitation and intense ecstatic visions that left him gaping. Canonized as saint by Pope Clement XIII in 1767, he is the patron of mental handicaps, examinations, aviation and astronauts.
June 13 - Mitsukuni Minamoto
St. Anthony of Padua: Franciscan Portuguese friar and priest who is noted by his contemporaries for his powerful preaching, expert knowledge of scripture, and undying love and devotion to the poor and the sick, he was one of the most quickly canonized saints in church history. Although he is known as the patron of lost items, his major shrine can be found in Padua, Italy. In January 1946, he is proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII, and is given the title of Doctor Evangelicus (Evangelical Doctor).
April 28 - Oboro Kiriyama
St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort (Louis de Monfort): French priest and confessor, who was known in his time as a preacher and was made a missionary apostolic by Pope Clement XI. As well as preaching, he found time to write a number of books which went on to become classic Catholic titles and influenced several popes, and he is known for his particular devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the practice of praying the Rosary. He is considered as one of the early writers in the field of Mariology. His most notable works regarding Marian devotions are contained in Secret of the Rosary and True Devotion to Mary. Monfort is canonized as a saint two years after World War II under the pontificate of Pope Pius XII.

October 9 - Ageha Kurenai
St. Louis Bertrand: Spanish Dominican friar, confessor, missionary, and religious brother who is known as the 'Apostle of South America.' After his ordination by St. Thomas of Villanova, he went to South America for his missionary work. According to legend, a deadly draught was administered to him by one of the native priests. Through Divine interposition, the poison failed to accomplish its purpose. There is a town festival, called La Tomatina in Buñol, Valencia, in his honor along with Mare de Déu dels Desemparats.
April 12 - Shiki Janome
Pope St. Julius I: 35th successor of St. Peter who reigned for 15 years and is credited with splitting the birth of Christ into two distinct celebrations (Epiphany and the Nativity) as well as asserting the authority of the pope over the Arian Eastern bishops. After his death in 352 AD, he is succeeded by Pope Liberius.
January 12 - Tsukumo Busujima
St. Marguerite Bourgeoys: French nun who is known as the founder of the Congregation of Notre Dame of Montreal in the colony of New France, now part of the province of Québec in Canada.  She is also significant for developing one of the first uncloistered religious communities in the Catholic Church. She was canonized in 1982 and declared a saint by the Catholic Church, the first female saint of Canada.

[Black Meteor Camp (B.M.C.)]
January 31 - Atago Rentaro
St. John Bosco: Italian priest, educator, confessor and writer who is popularly known as 'Don Bosco' as well as the 'Father and Teacher of Youth'. While working in Turin, where the population suffered many of the ill-effects of industrialization and urbanization, he dedicated his life to the betterment and education of street children, juvenile delinquents, and other disadvantaged youth. He developed teaching methods based on love rather than punishment, a method that became known as the Salesian Preventive System. John was an ardent devotee of Mary, mother of Jesus, under the title Mary Help of Christians. He later dedicated his works to De Sales when he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco, based in Turin. He also founded the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a religious congregation of nuns dedicated to the care and education of poor girls together with Maria Domenica Mazzarello, and he taught Dominic Savio, of whom he wrote a biography that helped the young boy be canonized.
September 6 - Habashiri Ginko
Zechariah the Prophet: He was a person that can be found in the Hebrew Bible and traditionally considered the author of the Book of Zechariah, the 11th of the Twelve Minor Prophets. He was a prophet of the Kingdom of Judah, and, like the prophet Ezekiel, was of priestly extraction. The Roman Catholic Church honors him with a feast day assigned to this date.
August 4 - Tsubaki Kento
St. John Vianney: French priest and confessor who is known as the patron saint of parish priests. He is often referred to as the 'Curé d'Ars', internationally known for his priestly and pastoral work in his parish in Ars, France, because of the radical spiritual transformation of the community and its surroundings. Catholics attribute this to his saintly life, mortification, persevering ministry in the sacrament of confession, and ardent devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. His major shrine can be found in Ars-sur-Formans.

"CAMILLE" (1936) Review
Tumblr media
"CAMILLE" (1936) Review I am about to confess to something many might regard as sacrilegious. I have never regarded Greta Garbo as one of my favorite actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood. I had nothing against her . . . personally. But I realized that I could barely recall any of her movies that were personal favorites of mine. Because of this, I was very reluctant to do a re-watch of one of Garbo's most famous films, "CAMILLE".
Produced by Irving Thalberg and directed by George Cukor, "CAMILLE" is based upon the 1848 novel and 1852 play "La Dame aux Camélias" ("The Lady with the Camellias") by Alexandre Dumas, fils. The movie told the story of Marguerite Gautier, a woman of low-class birth who rose to become one of Paris' top courtesans. Debt-ridden from helping friends and suffering from tuberculosis, Marguerite hopes to attract the attention of an aristocrat named Baron de Varville as her next "client" at the opera. However, just as she manages to attract the Baron's attention, Marguerite meets a young member of the bourgeois gentry named Armand Duval and instant attraction flares up between them. The attraction eventually develops into love. But external influences - including Marguerite's debts - threatens their potential for happiness. I have not seen "CAMILLE" in a long time. A long time. There is a good chance I have not seen it since I was in my early twenties. But something . . . I have no idea what . . . led me to watch this film after so many years. In the end, the only regret that I managed to feel was that I had ignored this movie for so long. Did I have any problems with "CAMILLE"? Perhaps a few. I noticed that the movie's narrative began in 1847 and ended roughly a year later. I think. Considering the story's setting, I found it surprising that the narrative never touched upon the political upheavals that swept throughout Europe between early 1848 and early 1849. In France, the upheaval was known as the French Revolution of 1848. During this event, the French king Louis Philippe I was overthrown in February 1848. Four months later, many Parisian workers had unsuccessfully risen in insurrection against the conservative Second Republic government. I realize that "CAMILLE" is not a political movie. But considering the film's setting and the fact that one character had plans for a diplomatic career (Armand Duval) and another was a wealthy aristocrat (Baron de Varville), I found odd that the topic of political upheaval was never touched upon. I also had mixed feelings about the costumes created by legendary Hollywood designer, Adrian. I realize that the man had a reputation for creating some of Hollywood's most memorable and famous costumes. But . . . I do not know. Oh, yes I do. I think Adrian should have stuck to modern day costumes. His period costumes were not bad. Some of them have actually impressed me. A good example would be this particular costume from "CAMILLE" - namely Marguerite's dark velvet riding habit:
Tumblr media
I also admired how Adrian managed to re-capture the fashion for men during the 1840s:
Tumblr media
On the other hand, I had problems with some of the gowns worn by Greta Garbo, like the one shown in the image below:
Tumblr media
I was inclined to complain about the sequins featured in the costumes, but I discovered that they had been worn as part of fashion for thousands of years - including the 19th century. But I have other problems with the above costumes. One, they looked as if they came from some cheap costume warehouse. And two, Garbo looked as if she was about to be consumed by the voluminous amount of material used to create those gowns. Or could it be that Garbo lacked the figure for the fashions of the mid 19th-century? No . . . I do not believe that is a good excuse. I am certain that Western women of the 1840s came in different shapes and sizes as they do today. It is possible that Adrian had simply failed to design Garbo's costumes in a way that would fit her perfectly. As a high-priced courtesan, Marguerite Gautier had the funds to purchase a wardrobe filled with clothes tailored to fit her. I do not think that Adrian took the time to fit Garbo's costumes. Or perhaps she did not give him the time. Otherwise, I cannot think of any other complaints about "CAMILLE". If I must be brutally honest, I think it is one of the best love stories I have ever seen in a motion picture, hands down. Ever. I was surprised that Alexandre Dumas fils, the son of the man who had written classics such as "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo", had written "La Dame aux Camélias" when he was roughly 23 years old. And screenwriters James Hilton, Zoë Akins and Frances Marion did a superb job in adapting Dumas' story. "CAMILLE" could have easily developed into one of those sappy love stories in which only external forces stood in the lovers' way. And yes, Dumas' tale featured those "forces" that stood in the way of Marguerite and Armand's relationship - Baron Varville, Marguerite's bank account, her friends and Armand's father. But there were other forces in play. Namely, Marguerite and Armand. Between her passive aggressive personality, penchant for evading the truth and an inability to handle her finances; Marguerite had put herself into a situation that made it nearly impossible to have a genuine romance with Armand, let alone anyone. And poor Armand. I could say that he was completely faultless in this romance. But he was not. Armand was naive, hot-tempered, rash and a bit too stubborn and proud for his own good. Considering the state of her health, I do not believe Marguerite's romance with Armand was destined to last very long. However, I feel that it were not for their personal flaws, the pair could have enjoyed more time together than they actually had. Many still regard Greta Garbo's performance as Marguerite Gautier as her finest performance. As I had hinted earlier in this review, I have only seen less than a handful of Garbo's movies. But I cannot deny that she gave a brilliant performance as the cynical, yet warm-hearted courtesan. Although Garbo was a healthy looking woman most of her life, I do admire how she utilized body language and facial expressions to convey Marguerite's questionable health and languid lifestyle. I have always suspected that Robert Taylor was one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood history. He had been in Hollywood for two years by the time he shot "CAMILLE". Many critics tend to focus on Garbo's performance when discussing the movie. As I had pointed out, she gave a superb performance. But so did Taylor, as Armand. He did an excellent job in conveying Armand's character from a very naive young man to someone who is a bit more cynical and mature. And yet, Taylor made sure to retain Armand's temper and stubbornness. Another excellent performance came from Henry Daniell, who portrayed Marguerite's "client", Baron Varville. Daniell not only skillfully conveyed Varville's cool and arrogant nature, but also the character's slight infatuation with Marguerite and the pain he experienced in facing the reality of Marguerite's true feelings for him. Laura Hope Crewes, famous for her role in the 1939 Best Picture winner, "GONE WITH THE WIND", gave a very entertaining performance as one of Marguerite's closest friends, a veteran courtesan named Prudence Duvernoy. It is a shame that Crewes never earned an Oscar nomination for her performance. Her Prudence is a skillful mixture of friendly warmth and a mercenary nature. "CAMILLE" also featured first-rate performances from the likes of Lionel Barrymore, Rex O'Malley, Leonore Ulric, Jessie Ralph and Elizabeth Allan. I was astounded to learn that "CAMILLE" had earned only one Academy Award nomination - Greta Garbo for Best Actress. And she lost to Luise Rainer's performance in "THE GREAT ZIEGFELD" . . . much to the surprise of the Hollywood community. Hell, I am not only shocked that "THE GREAT ZIEGFELD" had also won Best Picture, I am flabbergasted that "CAMILLE" did not even earn a Best Picture nomination, along with nominations for the leading actor, a screenplay nomination or a Best Direction nod for George Cukor. How did this travesty happen? A superb movie like "CAMILLE"? The discovery of the limited amount of acclaim that "CAMILLE" had earned back in late 1936/1937 really convinced me how irrelevant that the Academy Awards truly are. Thankfully, movie fans still have the movie to enjoy for years to come, thanks to George Cukor's superb direction; a great screenplay by the likes of James Hilton, Zoë Akins and the legendary Frances Marion; and a superb cast led by the iconic Greta Garbo and the excellent Robert Taylor.

About the Author Tag Game
Rules of the Game: Answer these questions and tag 10 blogs you’d like to know better.
Tagged by @hareyakana-rin ... sorta. ;D
1.     Nickname: Call me Bea. ;) Honestly, I’ll respond to pretty much anything, including Guber, Happy Face, Mama Magpie, etc. I have so many nicknames by now that it’s not even funny. For this pseudonym though, call me Bea.
2.     Zodiac: Mmmmmmmmmm really not sure. Plus, no real interest in it? Like Rin, I’m a lot more into MBTI and (as far as I know) am an INFP.
3.     Height: *Checkov voice* I know zis!  5′1 3/4″. I did a health class that neede my height and my 1/2″ taller sister was appalled that I had to raise it to 5′2″.
4.     Time: at the minute? 3:22.
5.     Favorite Band/Artist:  Owl City is a traditional favorite, but I have a rather eclectic range of music preference. I’ll listen to pretty much anything once.
6.     Song Stuck in My Head: “I’ve heard it both ways” from Psych, The Musical. I can sing all of it (including the dialogue between the singing) from memory.
7.     Last Movie I Saw:  Labyrinth (1986)
8.     Last Thing I Googled:  “la belle et la bete 2014″ google images.

10.  Do I Get Asks?: Not yet :( I’m hoping that changes with this blog.
11.  Why This Username?: “There Was A Star Danced” is part of a quote from Beatrice in Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing”. The full quote is long and needs context so here goes:
Beatrice: Good Lord for alliance! Thus goes everyone to the world but I, and I am sunburnt; I may sit in a corner and cry 'heigh-ho for a husband!’
Don Pedro: Lady Beatrice, I will get you one.
Beatrice: I would rather have one of your father's getting. Hath your grace not a brother like you? Your father got excellent husbands, if a maid could come by them.
Don Pedro: Will you have me, lady?
Beatrice: [pauses] No, my lord, unless I might have another for working-days. Your Grace is too costly to wear everyday. But I beseech your Grace to pardon me; for I was born to speak all mirth and no matter.
Don Pedro: Your silence most offends me, and to be merry best becomes you; for, out of question, you were born in a merry hour.
Beatrice: No, sure, my lord, my mother cried; but then there was a star danced, and under that was I born.
(emphasis mine)
As far as the name of the blog (my pseudonym), the first name comes from Beatrice, obviously, and the second name is a French surname that just screams Beauty and the Beast (another one of my passions).
12.  Following: 80
13.  Average Amount of Sleep: Anywhere from four to twelve hours. It depends on when I have to get up and when I force myself to go to bed.

16.  Dream Job: Honestly? Author. Although I really want to open a jewelry shop on Etsy, and I’d be happy if I kept working in Human Services.
17. Dream Trip: Viking River Cruise through Europe! I want to see all those historical places! My top places would probably be Paris, Scotland, Lichenstein, Italy, and Spain (In no order of importance, just all of them.)
18.  Favorite Food: Macaroni and Cheese most often (Any type but the KFC kind. blech.) It used to be split between that and Fettucini Alfredo, but then the latter gave me food poisoning and while I still love it, I just don’t think to eat it that much anymore.
19.  Instruments I Play: I used to play piano, and I’d like to get back into it, but it’s not a priority for me.
20.  Eye Colour: Green.
21.  Hair Colour:  Brown? Like, sort of medium? Kind of cooler? IDK. “Brown, brown, brown!” - Professor Higgins.
22.  Aesthetic: Um... Cheesy, but not to the point of being non-functional. Understated Fandom.
23.  Languages I Speak: English. I did take two Spanish classes in High School, so I can stumble through that if need be. I would love to learn French, but I’m not there yet.

Outfit Details of the Bride and Bridal Party
The Wedding Dress: Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy
Ms. Meghan Markle’s wedding dress has been designed by the acclaimed British designer, Clare Waight Keller. Ms. Waight Keller last year became the first female Artistic Director at the historic French fashion house Givenchy.
After meeting Ms. Waight Keller in early 2018, Ms. Markle chose to work with her for her timeless and elegant aesthetic, impeccable tailoring, and relaxed demeanour. Ms. Markle also wanted to highlight the success of a leading British talent who has now served as the creative head of three globally influential fashion houses – Pringle of Scotland, Chloé, and now Givenchy.
Ms. Markle and Ms. Waight Keller worked closely together on the design. The dress epitomises a timeless minimal elegance referencing the codes of the iconic House of Givenchy and showcasing the expert craftsmanship of its world-renowned Parisian couture atelier founded in 1952.
The Design
True to the heritage of the house, the pure lines of the dress are achieved using six meticulously placed seams. The focus of the dress is the graphic open bateau neckline that gracefully frames the shoulders and emphasises the slender sculpted waist. The lines of the dress extend towards the back where the train flows in soft round folds cushioned by an underskirt in triple silk organza. The slim three-quarter sleeves add a note of refined modernity.
The Fabric
Following extensive research by Ms. Waight Keller in fabric mills throughout Europe, an exclusive double bonded silk cady was developed. Perfect for the round sculptural look required, the silk cady has a soft matt lustre whilst the bonding process and pure white colour chosen by Ms. Markle and Ms. Waight Keller bring a fresh modernity to the dress.
The Veil
Ms. Markle expressed the wish of having all 53 countries of the Commonwealth with her on her journey through the ceremony. Ms. Waight Keller designed a veil representing the distinctive flora of each Commonwealth country united in one spectacular floral composition.
The Commonwealth family of nations – of which Her Majesty The Queen is Head –will be a central part of Prince Harry’s and Ms. Markle’s official work following   His Royal Highness’s appointment as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador. Ms. Markle wanted to express her gratitude for the opportunity to support the work of the Commonwealth by incorporating references to its members into the design of her wedding dress.
Significant time was spent researching the flora of each Commonwealth country and much care was taken by Ms. Waight Keller to ensure that every flower is unique.
The veil is five meters long and made from silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers in silk threads and organza.
Each flower was worked flat, in three dimensions to create a unique and delicate design. The workers spent hundreds of hours meticulously sewing and washing their hands every thirty minutes to keep the tulle and threads pristine.
In addition to the flora of the Commonwealth, Ms. Markle also selected two personal favourites:
Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox), which grows in the grounds of Kensington Palace in front of Nottingham Cottage, and the California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) the State flower from Ms. Markle’s place of birth, California.
Symmetrically placed at the very front of the veil, crops of wheat are delicately embroidered and blend into the flora, to symbolise love and charity.

Jewellery
The veil is held in place by Queen Mary's diamond bandeau tiara, lent to Ms. Markle by The Queen. The diamond bandeau is English and was made in 1932, with the centre brooch dating from 1893.
The bandeau, which is made of diamonds and platinum, is formed as a flexible band of eleven sections, pierced with interlaced ovals and pavé set with large and small brilliant diamonds.  The centre is set with a detachable brooch of ten brilliant diamonds.
The diamond bandeau was made for Queen Mary and specifically designed to accommodate the centre brooch. This brooch was given as a present to the then Princess Mary in 1893 by the County of Lincoln on her marriage to Prince George, Duke of York.  The bandeau and the brooch were bequeathed by Queen Mary to The Queen in 1953.
The Bride is wearing earrings and bracelet made by Cartier.
Wedding Shoes
The wedding shoes are based on a Givenchy refined pointed couture design made of a silk duchess satin.
The Bride’s Bouquet
Prince Harry handpicked several flowers yesterday from their private garden at Kensington Palace to add to the bespoke bridal bouquet designed by florist Philippa Craddock.
The spring blooms include Forget-Me-Nots which were Diana, Princess of Wales’ favourite flower. The couple specifically chose them to be included in Ms. Markle’s bouquet to honour the memory of the late Princess on this special day.
The Bride's bouquet is a petite design, pulled together in a gentle, ethereal, relaxed style with delicate blooms also including scented sweet peas, lily of the valley, astilbe, jasmine and astrantia, and sprigs of myrtle, all bound with a naturally dyed, raw silk ribbon.
The myrtle sprigs are from stems planted at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, by Queen Victoria in 1845, and from a plant grown from the myrtle used in The Queen’s wedding bouquet of 1947.
The tradition of carrying myrtle begun after Queen Victoria was given a nosegay containing myrtle by Prince Albert’s grandmother during a visit to Gotha in Germany.  In the same year, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought Osborne House as a family retreat, and a sprig from the posy was planted against the terrace walls, where it continues to thrive today.
The myrtle was first carried by Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Princess Victoria, when she married in 1858.
Bridal Hair and Make-Up
Ms. Markle's hair was styled by Serge Normant, with make-up by long-time friend and make-up artist Daniel Martin.
Bridesmaids’ Dresses
Clare Waight Keller designed the six young Bridesmaids’ dresses in the Givenchy Haute Couture Atelier in Paris.
The dresses were designed to have the same timeless purity as Ms. Markle's dress.
Each dress is sculpted in Ivory silk Radzimir, and is high-waisted with short puff sleeves and hand finished with a double silk ribbon detail tied at the back in a bow. The Bridesmaids’ dresses include pockets and pleated skirts to create a relaxed and luxurious silhouette.
The Bridesmaids are wearing white leather Aquazurra shoes; each pair is monogrammed with the Bridesmaids initials, and the wedding date. The shoes are a gift from Ms. Markle to the young ladies as a keepsake of the special day.
Bridesmaids’ Flowers
The bridesmaids each have flower crowns selected by Prince Harry and Ms. Markle, which have been designed by florist Philippa Craddock.
The Bridesmaids' flowers replicate the flowers used in the bridal bouquet.
Page Boys' Uniforms
The four Pages are wearing a miniature version of the Blues and Royals frockcoat. The uniform draws its insignia from the Blues and Royals, which is an old Regiment of The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry. Both are also wearing Blues and Royals frockcoats for the Wedding Day.
The frockcoats are made from blue doeskin, single-breasted in style with a stand-up collar and completed with figured braiding of Regimental pattern. The figured braiding has been scaled down for the Pages, as otherwise it would have gone above their shoulders.
As a special memento, each Page has their initials embroidered in gold on their shoulder straps. The Pages are not wearing hats or white waist belts for practical reasons.
Their leg garments are made from blue/black wool barathea with three-quarter scarlet stripes fastened with a leather strap.
The uniforms were cut and made by the tailors Dege & Skinner in Savile Row.
Mother of the Bride's Dress
Ms. Ragland wears a custom dress and day coat designed by creative directors of Oscar de la Renta, Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim.
Ms. Ragland's shoes are designed by Edgardo Osorio of Aquazurra, and her custom hat was designed exclusively for her by British milliner Stephen Jones, O.B.E., whom Ms. Markle has worked closely with since moving to the UK.
Stephen Jones was also commissioned by Ms. Markle to create custom hats for several of her closest friends.

Rodopis. Ye Xan. Cenerentola. Cendrillon. Aschenputtel.  Aschenbrödel. Zolushka. Cenicienta. Gata Borralheira. Cinderella. The heroine has several names around the world, but all of them experience the same tale: young ladies who are opressed and marginalized by father and stepfamily, but, thanks to their kindness and bravery, receive assistance to rise from the ashes more strong and beautifull, learning to love themselves and eventually finding the love of a prince that will make them happy. The tale is very old, its first writen version dating back to Ancient Egypt, and has been told, retold, writen and rewriten in several different versions, and has been adapted into a variety of media like cartoons, films, radio shows, and comics from around the Globe, wich possibilated anyone to choose their favorite versions. And today, i will share with my favorite portrayal of one of the most iconic fairy tale heroines of all time.
12º Daphne Zuniga in Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child (1995)
This animated fairy tale anthology series produced by HBO camed with the twist of transporting well known european versions of fairy tales to different cultures, like China, Cuba and the Caribbean. In this episode, they adapted Cinderella by setting the story in a Kingdom that had culture and population inspired by Mexico, making it one of the first portrayals of the character as a mexican, wich turns it a very significative work. Cinderella herself could show a bit more range of emotions, because in this portrayal she is at her most passive, her voice is always very sweet and low and she rarely her smile facial expression, but the character design and how she interacts with the colorfull and creative world and characters in the episode still makes it wort checking it out.
11º Aylin Tezel in Sechs auf einen Streich (2011)
Grimm’s Finest Fairy Tales (Sechs auf einen Streich in Germany and Holland) is a live action TV Movie anthology series from Germany made between 2008 and 2019. In 2011, they released their adaptation of Cinderella (Grimm’s Aschenputtel) staring german-turkish actress Aylin Tezel. Tezel brings a sense of playfullness to the role, as well as a sense of altruism in helping the servants in her Stepmother’s house and a wild free spirit that she fights to keep despite the opressive rulling of her Stepmother over her life. She is basically borrowing some elements of the humanity that other actresses before her brought to the role, while making this version of the character her own, wich is not easy feet, and deserves all the praises in the world.
10º Mitsuko Horie/Lara Cody in Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics (1989)
Another fairy tale anthology series, this time made as a japanese anime that, despite the title, didn’t necessarily limited itself to the tales written by the Grimm Brothers. But in the case of this Cinderella episode, the Grimm’s version is the one they choosed to adapt, excluding the gory element of the sisters cutting their feet. This encarnation of Cinderella is probably the one with the most highlighted innocence, wich could both bring people to love and help her, but also be turned against her by the villains. The moment where this is most explicit is when after returning from the ball, she casually comments with the birds about the tree that gaved her the ball gown to wear, without knowing that the Stepmother is listening, and later her Stepmother not only locks her in the attic, but calls a woodcutter to cut down the tree, leaving poor Cinderella to suffer in deep guilt. It’s not often that a Cinderella adaptation explores the character’s innocence having negative consequences for her, and that is what makes this portrayal of one the most refreshing.
09º Maria Kawamura in Cinderella Monogatari (1996)
The Story of Cinderella (Cinderella Monogatari) is an Italian-Japanese anime television series of 26 episodes, wich were later edited into a two part feature lenght movie. This Cinderella is the 16 year old daughter of a rich Duke who dreams of someday going to live in a castle, having her own horse and many friends. But those dreams start to become remote for her when her father has to make a long travel and her Stepmother and Stepsisters reveal their true faces: Cinderella is taken out of her room, turned into their servant, often receiving hard tasks in short spans of time, and several times is exposed to situations of danger and harm by her Stepmother, like when she is unfairly framed for stealing grapes from the royal vines. Her situation is one of the most vulnerable, and troughout the series we get nervous to see if she will keep being a hopefull teenager, or if the hardships will crush her spirit despite the support that she has from her friends.
08º Ilene Woods in Disney’s Cinderella (1950)
Going from a teenager who has just recently started to experience adversity, to a grown adult who has experienced adversity since childhood. Having lost both of her parents as a child, it becamed more easy for Lady Tremaine to lock Cinderella away from the world and educate her to be an apparently perfect servant who does every domestic shore well, fast and without any sign of complaints. But, when she is alone with her animal friends, is the moment that Cinderella voices her fealings of fear, longing, anger, sadness and tiredness, dreaming of someday becoming free. She also gives them food and handmade clothes, showing how thankfull she is for their friendship, and this inspires the animals, as well as the Fairy Godmother who sees everything, to want to help her. And in her night out at the ball, she shows a natural grace and sweetness that charms people like the Prince to instantly fall in love with her. Basically, an inspirational role model.
07º Gemma Craven in The Slipper and The Rose (1976)
An intersting bridge between Disney’s Cinderella and Cinderella Monogatari. Like Disney’s Cinderella, she is a grown adult orphaned of both parents. Like Cinderella Monogatari, since her father died when she is an adult, her entrapment into servitude is more recent, wich makes clear that she has difficulty with domestic shores and also gives her a more intense will to rebel, to the point that this is one of the few portrayals of Cinderella that says “I hate you” in her Stepmother’s face. And the rebeliousness is well mixed with a very romantic personality that specially shines after she falls in love with the Prince, who is also an idealistic rebel that matches perfectly well with our relatable heroine.
06º Drew Barrymore as Danielle de Barbarac in Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)
In american cinema during the 90s, it was growing in popularity the fantasy heroine who was a warrior rebel and an intelectual bookworm. Capitaling in this fenomenon, Ever After: A Cinderella Story, was made, eschewing the magical elements in favour of Pseudo-Historical Fiction retelling.
The story begins when The Brothers Grimm are invited to the home of a French noblewoman who tells them how much she enjoyed their story of Cinderella, but that they got some details wrong. She then proceeds to tell them this story: Danielle de Barbarac  is the beloved only child of the widowed Auguste de Barbarac and his late wife, Nicole de Lancret. When she is eight years old, he remarries the Baroness Rodmilla de Ghent (Anjelica Huston), and brings her home along with her two daughters, spoiled and cruel Marguerite and gentle but weak-willed Jacqueline. Shortly thereafter, he dies, leaving Danielle to the care of her stepmother, who already resents the love that he displays to his daughter (especially as he calls for her over his wife in his final moments), and the estate's three devoted servants - the housemaids, Paulette and Louise, and the retainer, Louise's husband Maurice. The movie skips ahead ten years, to when Danielle is eighteen. Their estate has fallen onto hard times and things keep "disappearing," to the anger of the Baroness. Danielle has, of course, become a virtual house slave to the family, but takes comfort in the familial love she shares with the servants and the kindness she receives from Jacqueline. One morning, she is gathering apples in the estate's orchard when she spies someone stealing the horse of her late father. Enraged, she chucks apples at him, ultimately causing him to fall. It turns out to be the Crown Prince of France, running away from a father who wants to marry him off. To buy her silence, he gives her a great amount of gold. Danielle and the Prince meet again when Danielle, disguised as a courtier and using her mother's name, goes to the castle to rescue Maurice, whom the Baroness had sold into slavery to pay off some of her debt. The Prince is intrigued by "Nicole's" beliefs and courage, and asks to meet her again. A courtship ensues, in which Danielle keeps trying to tell Henry that she is really not a countess and the Baroness gets increasingly suspicious of Danielle's odd appearances and disappearances. The King and Queen, desperate to marry their son off, are delighted that he has found a girl... but are keen to meet her, something Danielle wishes to avoid. Meanwhile, Leonardo da Vinci, who has been invited to court, befriends both Danielle and Henry and everything seems to be going along well, save for Danielle's growing anxiety about maintaining the masquerade.
Barrymore’s Danielle channels the idealism and dreaminess of the Cinderella character trough her love of books, specially Thomas Moore’s Utopia, and also expands the rebeliousness brought by her predecessours by being writen as skillfull in swordfight, making her able to save herself and the ones she loves in more than one ocasion, wich was a very new take. At least for american audiences in the 90s, anyway, but we will get there later...
05º Brandy Norwood in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997)
When i was kid i watched mainly three film versions of Cinderella: the 1950 Disney animated film, Ever After: A Cinderella Story, and this TV Movie production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical released by the Disney Channel. It was one the first examples of a diverse, colorblind period fairy tale production i remember seeing, and it was an important mark for me ever since.
As played by pop singer and actress Brandy Norwood, this encarnation of Cinderella is a courteous, gentle young woman who is nevertheless unafraid to speak her mind, ocasionally making snarky comments as a way to cope with her stepfamily’s abuse. But she is still shown to need some boosting in confidence by her Fairy Godmother, who teaches Cinderella to see the valour and beauty in herself, and never stoping asking for the impossible.
04º  Lesley Ann Warren in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1965)
Whereas Brandy Norwood’s Cinderella would more easily find a way to confront others who mistreated her and become a confident person, Lesley Ann Warren’s Cinderella was a more shy and frightened person, who had to take a more slow path into becoming confident and take her chance of happiness. Because of that, the viewer has the more intense feeling that when she goes to the ball in the beautifull magic gown, she is a more glamorous and happy person, different from the meek and sad lady who usually hides around the fireplace. This was Warren’s first starring role, and we must commend her for portraying two faces of the same character in her debut as a leading lady.
03º Jennifer Beals in Fairy Tale Theater (1985)
The most simple, straightforward adaptation of Charles Perrault’s Cinderella ever made, and the simplicity is its greatest strenght. That strenght is personified in Jennifer Beals’s performance as the title character. This Cinderella is the quintessential no nonsense girl next door, who even tough finding herself in a situation of unimpowerment, always refuses to accept the absurd injustice of her exploitation as a servant, speaking her mind clearly to her stepfamily. This make all the more satisfatory when she receives the visit of her Fairy Godmother, and is reward with the deserved rich and happy life that she was loosing hope of ever receiving.
02º Libuše Šafránková in Three Wishes for Cinderella (1973)
This czech film is one of the first cinematic portrayals of Cinderella as a wild, adventurous, free spirited trickster character, who with the help of three wish granting magic nuts, can go outside and woo her beloved Prince. She enjoys horse riding, trowing snow balls, and hunting, as well as wearing pretty dresses to dance at balls. A highlight is when she cleverly hides her face with a veil to avoid being recognized by her stepfamily, and teases the Prince with riddles about who she is. You can see that she oppened the door for portrayals like Barrymore’s and Tenzel’s.
And my number one is the version that opened the door for her and many others...
01º Leslie Caron in The Glass Slipper (1955)
In this ballet-movie, french-american ballerina and actress Leslie Caron portrays Ella, a girl who not only is abused by her stepfamily, but also ostracized by the people in her village due to constantly apearing covered in ashes and not being traditionally beautifull with her short hair and big teeth. Because of that, Ella grows into a lonely, awkward and agressive person, whose only refuge is the prophecy of a fortune teller who told that someday she would live in the beautifull Palace of the Duke, and the daydreams in wich she imagine herself as a gracious ballerina. One day, Ella meets two people: Mrs Toquet, an old lady who everyone calls crazy, and a young man who presents himself as son of the Palace’s Cook, but is secretly the Duke’s son, Prince Charles. Those two are the first people who treat Ella with kindness, and because of that, she slowly blooms into a more merry person, who learns to love herself and accept the love of others.
This adaptation is very influential, being one of the first where the heroine’s birth name is Ella (wich would be later used in Ella Enchanted and Disney’s Cinderella 2015), one of the first that makes the supernatural elements more subtle (paving the way for Ever After’s complet schewing of them), one of the first that portrays a more angry and rebellious Cinderella (paving the way for Three Wishes for Cinderella, The Slipper and The Rose, Fairy Tale Theater, Ever After and Aylin Tezel’s 2011 Cinderella) and one of the first to make her meet and fall in love with the Prince before the ball, without knowing his true identity (paving the way for Three Wishes for Cinderella, Ever After , Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella 1997 production and Aylin Tezel’s 2011 Cinderella).
And because of how awkward and agressive Ella acts in her everyday life, her ballet daydreams and the transformation in the mysteryous “belle of the ball” feels more radical, like two different faces of the same coin, thanks to Leslie Caron’s full of range performance. For being the version that brought the raw humanity to Cinderella, influencing several portrayals ever since, is the reason that Leslie Caron is my number one favorite portrayal of Cinderella.
Honorable Mentions: Kim Crosby in Into the Woods (1987), The Triplets (1998).
