Afternoon everyone! How do yall feel about horror? Considering what fandoms you’re in, I’m gonna assume it’s a solid yes, which is why I’ve got;

This one has. SO much. Lore especially, angst, horror, fear, and an ending that you might see coming but still leaves you shook. Excellent concept, like nothing I’ve seen before, with such clever and unsettling narration. Mind the tags, ofc, but holy crap you’ve gotta read this one. 

Go ahead and follow the author as well, they’ve got a bunch of Harry Potter, Gundam 00, a bunch of other animes, and a few other DP and SPN fics you should check out! Their blog is pretty active too (via queue? I’m actually not sure how queues work haha.), and though I’m not in any other fandoms with them, there’s a ton of awesome stuff to look at there. I’d recommend going to their ao3 page and check out what fandoms they’ve written for. 

And, as always, leave a review! Show your authors some love, feedback makes a ton of difference in fandom. Let creators know you like their work and keep creativity going. It really can mean the world to someone.

AnneriaWings - a leader of the dissection subgenre, with a fanfiction.net favorites list that reads like a 50+ hour angst playlist

anthrop (ao3) - lots of angst and body horror, some of the absolute coolest prose (and best superphantom crossovers)

Chaos Dragon - works are split between (sometimes mature) Danny/Sam and some of the hardest hitting tragedies I've read in the phandom

Cordria (ao3) - The Place To Begin!!! Several hundred fics once you factor in the oneshot collections, covering literally every genre under the sun and angst that will change you forever

Danny Phantom SG-1 - the author who taught me that fanfiction was designed to be a vessel for angst, will bash you over the head with your own feelings

HaiJu (ao3) - one of the most polished and highly recommended authors in the phandom for a very very good reason

Laora (ao3) - one of my favorite authors of all time, and creator of Empty Promises (ao3) aka the angstiest fic in the phandom

Nylah - fantastically atmospheric angst that I literally have not been able to stop thinking about since I first read them

Phantomrose96 (ao3) - All Of The Angst. Also "it's not gay if he's dead." And no matter where it falls on the angst-to-crack spectrum, it's excellent

Shenzuul - such well written, grounded fics that I keep coming back to read them over and over again

surelysilly (ao3) - incredibly evocative writing style that immediately paints the atmosphere, some really great creepy angsty stuff

Everything else under the sun (including more angst!)

avearia (ao3) - soooooooo many good fics omgggggg

CoronaIgnis - leader in the Ghost King Danny trope, really amazing world building

dpluver - Queen of Snarky Danny and some of my favorite funny and/or fluffy fics in the phandom

KicsterAsh - wonderfully feel-good series about Danny becoming an astronaut

Lacey52 - really well developed trio-focused series with incredible characterization, Danny/Sam

Lynse (ao3) - so so many good fics that it blows my mind (and all sorts of crossovers)

mabel-but-slytherin (ao3) - really intricately thought out theories and premises and crossovers

MsFrizzle - great oneshots and fics with canonically Jewish Sam

MyAibou (ao3) - incredibly well crafted fics and series that explore all the things that the show could have been, it's amazing

pearl84 - author of the biggest fics in the phantom like Checkmate and Dawning of the Sun

PixieGirl13 - so many nice long action-packed fics with some of the best Danny and Vlad interactions out there, some of my absolute faves

PuppetMaster55 (ao3) - angst and romance and crossovers (oh my!!)

sapphireswimming (ao3) - 100+ gen works including plenty of angst, hurt/comfort, friendship, humor (and superphantom crossovers)

SRL541 - not too many fics but every single one of them is so good??

Tay1019411 - all of the hurt, all of the comfort, and then all of the everything else and it's all just so good

The Cinderninja - some of the most beautiful well-thought characterization I've ever seen, I cannot recommend these fics enough

WingsOfMorphius - really good Danny/Sam, well worth reading even if they're incomplete

Six. :’D Would be INFINITELY MORE if I stopped being a pansy and actually posted all my XIV OC stuff to AO3, but alas… (For real I’ve been writing XIV stuff here for YEARS. Y E A R S. Y’all have no idea how many words about this big dumb Roe I’ve put to digital paper!)

Generally “character pieces”, sometimes mindbending body horror, sometimes some weird mix of both…just depends on what I’m going for lol and it’s usually revolving around someone being too damn stubborn to stop doing something.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Oh, “Fault”, without a doubt. Though the ending of the “From The Ashes” arc from my XIV stuff is right up there ngl…

What’s a fic that pushed you out of your comfort zone?

ALL MY XIV STUFF, if just because the notion of writing things for OCs and specifically doing so in a way that’s more often than not kinda lorebendy was. A Lot. At first. I’m a lot more comfortable now though lol

Do you write crossovers? What’s the wildest one you’ve written?

Uhhhh I don’t do that with fic, generally, but RP? You betcha. In that particular case the answer is “anything I write with Amba”.

Oh I’ve had snitty comments now and again but I just delete that shit, ain’t nobody got time for that.

I’m told I do third person limited POV very well, and characterization stuff. And metaphors. So many goddamn metaphors

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Uhhhh HM, depends. No one size fits all answer here; genuinely depends on what you’re going for effect-wise, the POV, the audience for the fic…and so on. Apologies for being vague but yeah the full answer would take me ages and I’d still probably miss something…

What was the first fandom you wrote for? Most recent?

Zoids was the first fandom, XIV was the most recent even if I haven’t posted it yet…oops

ACTUALLY I have a different answer for this than the above. “From The Ashes” is actually the one I’m most proud of TECHNICALLY. Mostly because I made @semper-miles really proud of it and given that Solv was always HER character…I just aimed to do my best to give closure to that. And I think I hit it. :) ILU friend

How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

6 on Ao3, MCU, Kingdom Hearts, Kagerou project, Critical Role, The world ends with you, and harry potter. I also got some old stuff with NCIS, Sailor Moon, Inuyasha, yu yu hakusho, Naruto and Digimon on ffnet bit that is a decade old soooo...

Are there any new fandoms you want to write for?

Absolutely. I am working on stuff for Genshin Impact which I am very hype about. I also want to finish stuff for Madoka Magica, Higurashi and My hero Academia.

Lost in a Concrete jungle, I am rather proud of that one. But I am unsure if the fandoms (Critrole and Twewy) overlap a lot or not.

Crossovers, crossovers, crossovers. my plot bunnies tend to be for long chapter fics but I am also bad af finishing stuff up sooo...

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Probably a naruto oneshot I have back on ffnet but it was more implying the canon fate of Itachi more than anything. Technically an upcoming Pmmm x Genshin fic I have would probably count.

What’s a fic that pushed you out of your comfort zone? Possibly a pretty graphic canon death scene for an unposted Danganronpa fic I have in my WIP. I def want to do more of the type so hopefully I'll get the chance to at a later point.

Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

85% of all my fics and plot bunnys are crossovers. I honestly love the idea of my Critical role and The World Ends with You crossover, it uses a modern AU for critrole but it is still two very different universes.

I think I was asked abot a oneshot way back when on ffnet but it has been ages

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes! While I do most of the writing now, @ninthfeather helped me with These Streets and we have a couple of unpublished works that we are co-writing as well.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Probably the aforementioned Dangandonpa WIP. I love it but I planned it as a multi chaptered post SDR2 recovery fic and I don't think I got the energy to finish it.

What are you currently working on?

I am working on a Genshin IOmpact Madoka Magica Fusion fic! I am very hype about writing it, but I want to try and finish a decent chunk of it before posting so it won't be stuck in limbo half finished.

I got a lot of plot ideas and am decent at characterization.

I am terirble at actually writing and publishing. hence why I oly got 4 fics on AO3.

IT’S HAPPENING! The college/coffeeshop/Halloween AU that no one asked for but I’m writing is up! Well, chapter 1 is. If you’re just joining in, each day of the month I’ll be posting a new little chapter--so that each bit corresponds to a day. Chapter 1 (October 1) is already up :) Here’s a sneak peek--if you want to read it all, you’ll have to pop on over to my ao3 ;)

It was eight in the morning on a Thursday, and Dean Winchester was struck by an urge to head downtown and get a book. He had seen someone quote T.S. Eliot’s The Wasteland, and now he was desperate to read it. Dean knew he could look it up online, but he preferred to be able to hold the words in his hands. He had always been like that—a tactile learner.

If anyone ever found out that Dean Winchester legitimately liked his English classes, he was going to kill them and then himself.

He often felt like a bit of a bull in a china shop, to be honest, a lesson in contradictions. He was a six-foot tall guy who basically just wore flannels, old band tees, jeans, and combat boots, was majoring in social work, had a side job as a mechanic, and, apparently, a soft spot for Shakespeare.

But English? Literature? That shit was fascinating. Dean had signed up for a class on Shakespeare’s tragedies because he needed an extra English class for his pre-reqs, and was now low-key considering minoring in English.

Dean ducked into the bookshop, and he heard a “Hi, welcome to Johnson’s Books,” from the counter. He nodded in acknowledgment, and then whipped around, “Castiel?”

“Hello, Dean,” Castiel said sheepishly, his cheeks turning slightly red as Dean walked to the counter, “How are you?”

Harry Potter/Fullmetal Alchemist Crossovers

Circulus by Phenobarbital

Official Summary: 

They're still not sure exactly how they ended up on the magic side of a place called London, but Edward and Roy are not new to dealing with the unexpected.

Needing to find a way back to Amestris, back to their own time, together they figure out how magic energy works, and how it can work for them specifically and in the end, the decision to go to Hogwarts is a mutual one. Edward will have to go to high school and Roy will have to get used to using a wand.

Neither of them are prepared for what they find at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry.

There are secrets, liars, murderers and too many people with very dangerous agendas, no one seems trustworthy, so naturally they should stick together...

...but then Ed starts lying to Roy.

My Thoughts:

THIS IS HONESTLY MY FAVORITE FIC. I don’t want to spoil anything but everyone is written SO well and the plot goes far beyond the standard “FMA characters stuck in the HP world”. Ed’s also kind of evil (partly an act and partly for real in his own Ed way) and that ups the suspense significantly. Basically if you’re not going to read anything else on this list PLEASE read this one

The Colours of the World by MiaKusakabe

Official Summary: 

When Roy Mustang went to retrieve his eyesight from Truth, he wasn’t expecting to end up doing a job in exchange. It couldn’t even be an easy job, of course, because Edward’s assessment of Truth was a pretty accurate one.

My Thoughts: 

THIS IS MY FAVORITE ROY OUT OF ANY FMA FIC. GOD he is written so well here. Unlike most of the other fics here, Roy willingly chooses to go into the HP world, and because of that there’s less stress on Roy trying to get home and more on him living in the world and working around it. Overall a really incredible fic and I highly highly suggest reading it

Fic Status: Dormant - Occasional updates on the authors patreon

Harry Potter and the Eastern Sage by LiteratureWork

Official Summary: 

Nicholas Flamel was famous for creating the philosopher's stone, but like Lockhart's smile it was all a lie. Flamel stole a part of the stone and it took Edward 642 years to get it back along with the souls inside of it, one which was his brother. But after traveling to Hogwarts to retrieve it, Dumbledore has other plans for the ancient hero.

My Thoughts: 

A REALLY interesting take on a HP/FMA crossover. It’s a half-AU where Ed turns into a Philosopher’s Stone at the end of FMA:B (with everyone from Amestris in the stone) and him being flung into the Harry Potter world. The author put a lot of time into worldbuilding and carefully weaving Ed into the HP universe so it seems completely normal that he’s lived in that world for 1,000 years

Cerulean Silver vs Amber Gold by hikaranko

Official Summary: 

Edward Elric has been put on his stupidest assignment yet: babysitting. Everyone else calls it undercover work. To Ed, it's babysitting. But there's more to this assignment than what's on file…

My Thoughts: 

A lighter and more fun HP/FMA crossover that centers around Ed and Draco’s interactions. Draco hates Ed and Ed hates his job basically. Not super plot heavy, but the character interactions makes up for it

Fic status: Dormant - Being rewritten on AO3

About a Boy by EstaJay

Official Summary: 

Portkeyed away on the night of his parents' murder, Harry Potter grows up as Roy Mustang. Magic is nothing more than another one of his aunt's stories but after the Promised Day, his past catches up to him. With the Elrics suddenly in London and his dormant magic finally and violently revealing itself, it's a cross continent journey to get the brothers back. If only wizard transportation didn't involve so many explosions…

My Thoughts: 

Was really unsure about this fic initially - the premise just seems too farfetched to enjoy, but after the first chapter you realize the author put in a lot of time to make sure Roy/Harry and the rest of the cast stayed in character. I think it’s a really cool twist on the standard HP/FMA crossover formula and definitely worth a read

Penance by Laora

Official Summary: 

The Gate was opening; the black arms stretched toward him and Pride. Ed knew he had no say in the matter. He would be pulled to this parallel dimension, alternate universe—whatever it was—and Amestris would be left to die. Truth merely grinned.

My Thoughts: 

It’s been a couple years since I read this, but I remember I really liked the twist that Pride was stuck in the HP universe along with Ed and Al

Playing God by The Flamel Cult

Official Summary:

 I thought the dull aching was something other than my demise. As it turned out, I was sorely mistaken. Perhaps I should listen to Alphonse more; maybe then there wouldn't be another bloody tragedy that would, inevitably, end it all. For good.

My Thoughts: 

There’s a twist in this fic that I LOVE, and while I refuse to spoil it I suggest reading just to find out what it is. It rocked my world the first time I read and I’m pretty sure I cried for like 3 days

More Than Just a Murder by AkitaFallow

CSI/Fullmetal Alchemist Crossover

Official Summary: 

As bodies pile up and evidence remains scarce, the CSI team has to fight against increasingly strange circumstances and an even stranger suspect in order to solve what is likely the most complicated case they have ever encountered.

My Thoughts:

 I know this seems like a weird premise but hear me out: this fic will Change Your Life. It’s so incredibly well written and the character development is phenomenal. If you don’t like CSI (I personally didn’t when I started reading) you can easily substitute random forensic scientists in and it works just as well. The real sell to this fic is watching Ed stumble through 2009 Las Vegas lmao

Warnings: This fic follows FMA 2003 ONLY, so if you haven’t seen that yet I highly suggest waiting to read.

AU’s (Alternate Universes)

Disorient by Esama

Official Summary:

 Who was he, what had happened to him, why did he have automail - and how was he there, in the past? 

My Thoughts: 

One of the best time travel fics I’ve ever read from any fandom. There’s so much time put in to fleshing out Ed’s new character (Nicholas) as well as his relationship with the younger version of Al and himself. Less plot heavy and focuses more on the day to day life of Resembool with Nicholas there

Type of AU: Time Travel + Amnesia

Fic Status: Dead

Warnings: This was a fic that got deleted in 2012 that I managed to grab before it was gone. If this list goes outside of my own circle and the original author wants me to remove this I will gladly do so (just message me @wavedwhelk on twitter or tumblr). 

A Boy Named Ed by BelloftheSea

Official Summary: 

Ed knew he was different. It wasn't just that he was smarter than the other kids or even that he had automail. No, it had more to do with the way people would occasionally look at him, like they were expecting somebody else. It was the way his mechanic cried the day she met him. It was the way his dad would sometimes slip – and call him Fullmetal.

My Thoughts: 

What I really love about this fic is that it’s a reincarnation AU that makes SENSE in the FMA universe - it doesn’t give a half-assed reason for why it happened, but rather works within the confines of the universe. Also I really love watching Ed go to school and pretend to try and be a normal kid while hiding the fact that he’s the Fullmetal Alchemist

My Master Ed by Blue Teller

Official Summary: 

Slave number Twenty Three didn't know what to make of his new Master. The strange boy was nothing like other slave owners. Short on both height and temper, yet strangely kind to him, Master Ed seemed to know something about him that he didn't himself. Just what was it?

My Thoughts: 

One of the best fics that takes place in the Xerxes time period IMO. I don’t want to spoil too much but you see a lot of the consequences for Ed’s actions and it can get really really intense (but in the best way)

Warnings: This gets surprisingly deep. Prepare Yourself

Men and Angels by Laora

Official Summary: 

Trisha can't understand; she's terrified, but she has to stay calm. Her boys are gone, replaced by her sons from the future...and something, she knows, is terribly wrong.

My Thoughts: 

A time travel fic that changes time for both current Ed/Al AND past Ed/Al (when they were 6). I think my favorite part from this fic has got to be how Mustang’s team reacts to (and tries to take care of) the frightened baby Elric’s. There isn’t a ton of plot but the character interactions drive this fic - if you care deeply about these characters you’ll really enjoy this

My Thoughts: 

Probably one of the best modern AU’s that I’ve found so far for FMA. It follows a pretty normal structure (Ed and Al are in foster homes, Roy notices something’s wrong, etc etc), but the character’s are kept true to their in-canon personalities and the plot is interesting enough to keep you on your toes. Also I cried once I finished reading it so there’s that

Type of AU: Modern/School AU

Fic Status: Complete

Truth Revealed by Fallen Crest

Official Summary: 

A lesson without pain is meaningless...to save their future, they will suffer through the truth. Brought to a room to view FMA:Brotherhood, the FMAB characters learn the dark secrets that surround Amestris. Follow the drama, the suspense, the laughs, the friendships that grow, and the pain they suffer in exchange as their future is laid out before their eyes.

My Thoughts:

 I’m actually right in the middle of reading this right now (it’s 2,500+ pages…...be ready) and it’s SO fun. Not really the kind of fic I ever expected myself to like, but everyone’s in character enough to enjoy their reactions and the interactions in between watching. The pain factor also makes things more interesting. Overall I really suggest checking this out even if it seems like something you wouldn’t enjoy

Official Summary:

Official Summary: 

As of today, Edward Elric had been missing for four months, two weeks, and five days.

My Thoughts: 

I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW DARK THIS FIC GETS. It’s probably the darkest FMA fic I’ve been able to sit through in its entirety. WITH THAT BEING SAID...if you can manage to read it all it ends on a happy note. I don’t want to spoil too much but basically: Ed gets kidnapped, experimented on, and turned into a dog chimera

 I ended up finding this fic back in 2012 but it’s surprisingly held up pretty well. It was unfortunately abandoned pretty quickly into its plot, but the worldbuilding that’s there is really interesting and makes it worth it to read

My Thoughts: 

This fic treats the topic of rape with nuance; the author admits that they don’t struggle with PTSD, but have reached out and done as much research as they can on the subject. I ended up really liking this fic for what it was setting out to do and what it accomplished, and while I did find it difficult to read at times due to the subject matter I still found myself appreciating it

Warnings: This fic deals with the trauma that comes along with rape, however it’s never described in detail and the focus is solely on how the character copes with it. Please mind the tags and rating (mature)

Skin Deep by Batsitousai

IM SUCH A SUCKER FOR TRANS ED I don’t want to say too much but I found it really heartwarming (especially the conversations between Mustang/Hawkeye and Ed) and just overall a really strong fic

My Thoughts: 

I’m not usually one to read fic’s that don’t revolve around the protagonists, but this peaked my interest enough to check it out. The author does an amazing job in fleshing out Selim (both his human side and Homunculus side) and it’s interesting to see how Selim reacts to things post-canon

I don’t have a ton to say but I found this fic really sweet and I enjoyed getting to see some character development in an older version of Elysia

My Thoughts: 

This has gotta be one of my favorite CoS compliant fics. I really love the idea that Alfons and Ed actually hate each other leading up to the events of CoS and have to actively work on themselves and their friendship before they can work on the rockets

Like the warning says, I remember really liking this fic, but since I haven’t read it since 2012 I can’t remember if there’s anything weird in it or not. I’ll reread it soon to make sure

21. Axe

They’d had unlimited options when designing the Gundams’ weaponry, but as soon as Ian gets his first look at their meisters’ initial battle simulations, all regrets at not equipping at least one of them with a particle-enhanced battleaxe vanish immediately.

22. Plate

Marina sits in the dusty underground bunker, wondering how things are faring in the world above – whether the palace personnel had been safely evacuated in time, whether the set of gold and maroon-rimmed china they used for state dinners had been shattered by the most recent bombings, whether - until a small boy presses the remaining half of a crumbling granola bar into her hands, bringing her solidly back to the present, and she smiles in thanks as she looks around the room of children who are just about the only ones whose current status isn’t a mystery to her.

There was a smell that Louise associated with death and destruction: gasoline - leaking, burning across flash-scorched pavement beneath the twisted rubble of a burning bus, the smoke acrid and choking even in her dreams ever since their near fatal shopping trip all those months ago – and she hadn’t ever thought she’d wish for it again until the strong sterile odor of her hospital room wasn’t enough to overpower the stench of charred bodies and burning hair that filled her nose hours after she’d been rescued from the rubble of a once-prestigious castle in Spain.

It was the fate of every superhero with a secret identity, he knew, not to be able to reap the benefits that should by all rights belong to the heroes, but every time they went to Earth, Lichty couldn’t help but lament (jokingly! and definitely not within hearing range of Tieria!) that it might be nice for once to actually get to experience the presidential treatment befitting members of an organization that was changing the world.

25. Avalanche

It didn’t surprise Sumeragi – very little did, anymore – but it was still fascinating in a detached, bleak sort of way to watch how quickly and entirely the entire world turned against them, calling for nothing less than total elimination when just months before, they’d been seen as mysterious activists, vigilante peacekeepers, or even unexpected heroes.

26. Whine

Krung Thep is quiet after Fallen Angels – the survivors of their too-small strike crew are still in regen pods or keep to their cabins, the unfamiliar hallways are filled with near-strangers who stop talking and avert their gazes when he walks past, and even the doctors don’t make eye contact for long once it becomes clear that they have no solutions for the pervading damage done by the red particles – and in the long days that follow, Lasse realizes with a twisting in his chest that what he misses most starkly is the way Lichty could fill any stretches of silence with his incessant rambling, goodnatured complaints, and annoyingly persistent questions that he’d always grumble about before answering.

27. Spring

Spring was impressive even from space, as huge swathes of land were claimed by green until entire continents had been refreshed from their multi-hued browns, but the first time Feldt truly saw it in person – the grass long, and lush, and green with flashes of blue and yellow and white wherever fresh flowers poked through, mirroring the budding trees above, softly raining white and pink and red petals – she found that Chris was right, and it really wasn’t something that could be done justice in photographs, after all.

28. Pump

There were many things that Setsuna hated about being undercover on Earth, but there was a special kind of wrath reserved for kindly concerned citizens asking if such a nice young man needed any assistance finding what he needed, or the gas station attendant coming out to verify whether he was actually, um, old enough to legally pump gas all by yourself until Setsuna glared him into silence, despite the fact that he’d driven there himself.

29. Ray

Lockon prided himself on his accurate marksmanship – as he had every right to, for the best sniper in the world nearly always hit his mark – but sometimes, while passing away long hours in Dynames’ cockpit, he wondered what happened to the rare shots that missed, and just how far they’d go, and if they would ever end up hitting something he’d never aimed at before they finally died away like the streak of a shooting star.

30. Eerie

Chris said that the Gundams were a little spooky, once, when the hangar was entirely dark except for the pockets of emergency lights that did little to illuminate the monumental machines looming silent in their respective corners; Lichty had immediately agreed with her, of course, but no matter how long Setsuna peered into the hangar, he couldn’t see it.
