another thing that bothers me about people insisting translation can never communicate the original with the implication that it's therefore not worthwhile is like. what's the end result of that? you never read anything from places that don't speak the languages you do? you let the perfect be the enemy of the good & seal yourself into a narrow cultural bubble because you've decided it's not possible for ideas & stories to cross language barriers?

#idk I just find that mindset baffling. 'we can never truly understand xyz other language unless we learn it (& I won't probably) so I'll #just never engage with anything from it'#<- incredibly fast way to never expose yourself to any new ideas of viewpoints #thoughts #like there ARE bad translations out there but you can't let that make you too scared to ever read any #translation

Today I went to the river and carded some wool, listening to the water fall over the stones.

The last few months have been really hard for me. I haven’t had the mental space to even think about making things. But I’m taking some time off work to rest and will try to live life at a slower pace.

ive been thinking about what characters would know sign language, bc despite never being mentioned i can't imagine teyvat wouldn't have an equivalent version.

alhaitham (partially deaf/goes nonverbal) obviously and by extension kaveh (kinda hard to chew out your roommate when they cant understand you), but also collei (goes nonverbal when triggered) would have been taught by tighnari (who knows it bc its useful for communicating silently w other rangers)

waaaughhhh i’m so excited for my ASL class. my professor is Deaf and is gonna be teaching the class entirely in ASL so it’s just gonna be 100% immersion learning AAUGHHH it’s gonna be tough but i’m unbelievably excited

Ooc; I really tried to change my game to the chinese dub because some characters are portrayed more accurately to the idea I have of them in that language, or, at least, some voices seem to fit a few characters better, in my opinion. But do you wish to know why I am not capable of fully making the change from the english dub to chinese dub and committing to it?

Kaeya.

I don't know what Josey was cooking and still continues to cook inside that recording booth, but english dub Kaeya to me is simply peak Kaeya. Remains undefeated to this day.

I'm making progress on that #but with this horrible kind of anxiety #I writhe not being the best at things that I'm trying to do. I writhe wondering if I should just give up.#this is why I had a horrible time studying Greek in high school as well: can't know it well enough fast enough #it's like I'm dying a little every day convincing myself no it's FINE not to know everything right away. it's OKAY.#it's okay if you stop learning Japanese in the future and it's okay if you keep learning Japanese. it's okay it's okay it's—#hhhhhhhhhhhh #it's such a complicated language it's making my stomach hurt right now thinking about how I want to learn kanji but it's So Much #and I don't know HOW to learn it #I've never really learned a language before (Greek does NOT count) and I'm learning all the complexities of the Japanese language and going #going oh....... this is........ actually extremely much...... and I'm never going to be a native speaker.......#I'm trying So Hard to embrace dying a little to my perfectionism every day but it's HARD. when i say daisuke is good at english i mean he's good at textbook english... if you use a lot of slang or regional lingo he's not going to get it but he's also the sort of shy and insecure but polite kid who's like 'sorry if my english is bad' before speaking better english than native english speakers sometimes. (this is also compounded by the fact daisuke enjoys reading and wouldn't be against watching the occasional ENG show or movie.) dark already uses a lot of 'cool' english terms in the og jp, and given his nature(tm) he's way quicker to pick up and acclimate himself to things like slang or memes. however because i think it's funny his mental state is perpetually flash-frozen in like early 2000s XD rawr deviantart era. language for both of them is canonically a strength over math; they're generally fairly proficient enough in multiple other languages to at least hold a basic conversation. if daisuke's ever somewhere out of japan he's at least studied a small amount for that sake.

#i dont think i’ve talked my nonverbal!Diluc hc on here yet #but i keep seeing posts abt disability/chronjcally ill/neurodivergent hcs for genshin characters so here’s one from me #idk i feel like after That Night™️ and being on the run from the Fatui/working with a secret organization #diluc not just learns the ‘value’ of keeping secrets and staying quiet but also internalizes his guilt and trauma of saying smth that could #hurt people #it started with him telling Kaeya that he’s not a Ragnvindr anymore and then is exacerbated by his 3-4 Year Fatui Murder Rampage thru Teyvat #and with all ghat trauma and self-deprecation and paranoia he just. stops talking.#he picks up sign language in Fontaine and still writes but at some point he just stops talking and never speaks again #when he comes back to Mondstadt it was hard to adjust to for both him and the people around him #Kaeya initially assumes that Diluc just refuses to talk to him until he later hears gossip abt how no one has ever heard him speak since he #came back. he goes to Adelinde and/or Elzer abt it and they tell him that they neve even hear Diluc so much as hum or grunt #afterwards everyone changes up real fast— Kaeya and Venti drinking at the bar and seemingly just talking at Diluc but they’re always #observing his reactions and body language even when they’re drunk #Jean tries her best to be patient but she has a hard time reading him bc he’s changed so much in the time he’s been gone #Adelinde & Elzer and the winery staff are the most communicative he’s with— Diluc is far more likely to write with them to communicate #at some point Diluc has a business meeting with some rich dude from Fontaine or smth #Kaeya walks in bc he has an actual important mission thinf to discuss and he sees Diluc and this Fontaine dude and the dude’s wife #moving their hands so fast and with all kinds of gestured and stuff #and it’s the first time Kaeya sees Diluc look so EXPRESSIVE— he’s frowning and raising his eyebrows and mouthing words and all this #and Kaeya just goes ‘what’#turns out the Fontainian dude is deaf and both him and his hearing wife know sign; she helps interpret this to kaeya for the dude and Diluc #and Kaeya is like ‘oh okay’ and goes to the kitchen like ‘i’ll just wait here till yall are finished’#and he sees Adelinde and Elzer there with stoic faces and they just. stand there in quiet for so long.#Kaeya finally says ‘…..so. sign language huh’ and Adelinde and Elzer have the most pained looks on their faces #later that week Diluc finds like everyone around suddenly doing basic signs with him #he later learns that the winery has ordered a shitton of signing books from Fontaine and are trying to learn #+ Kaeya and Jean too with help from Lisa bc like dont you know learning several languages is a requirement for graduation from the Akademiya #soon the use of sign starts spreading in Mondstadt— there might be some small communities where they have their own native sign but it’s not #as standardized nor widely known as it is in Fontaine #this is getting really long so I’ll stop here but yeah. nonverbal Diluc who signs fjskdjs

would akechi speak multiple languages? cause at this point its basically canon that he soaks up information like a sponge. would he go all out and get dictionaries and textbooks and pronunciation guides or would he be able to learn just from watching shows in the target language?

im asking bc i wanna know if he would memorize every single verb tense in french. 99% of them are unnecessary, useless, needlessly specific, and so similar to like five others. but would akechi be able to use them properly.
