Four people have been arrested in Texas for running a “forced labor” scheme from an unassuming home on a quiet block, leaving neighbors stunned.
Fifteen women were found living in a home in Princeton — about 45 miles northeast of downtown Dallas — following a welfare check where they were forced to sleep on the floor when they weren’t working, according to Fox 4 News.
There was essentially no furniture in the home — just blankets and a bunch of computers and other electronics, police said in an announcement Monday.
The women were reported to police by a pest control company that was called to the home for bedbugs, according to an affidavit obtained by the outlet.
The inspector noted that “each room… had 3-5 young females sleeping on the floors” and said there were “large amounts of suitcases.” 
Chandan Dasireddy, 24; Dwaraka Gunda, 31; Santhosh Katkoori, 31 — all of Melissa, Texas — and Anil Male, 37, of Prosper were arrested in March and charged with human trafficking.
Police said the women were forced to work for Katkoori and several programming shell companies owned by him and his wife, Gunda.
A search of the home revealed several laptops, cell phones, printers and fraudulent documents. 
Investigators later learned that the forced labor operation included multiple locations in Princeton, Melissa and KcKinney with dozens of victims — including adult males. Additional electronics and documents were seized from other locations.
Princeton Police Sgt. Carolyn Crawford told Fox 4 that “over 100” people were involved — more than half of whom are victims.
More arrests are expected, cops said.
“How we came across this situation was very unique,” Princeton Police Chief James Waters said. “[Investigators] would unravel just a multitude of other clues and a multitude of other scenes that was going out there.”
The neighborhood is shocked such an operation was happening on their street.
“I would’ve never thought that something like this was going on like a few houses down from mine,” neighbor Herbert Logan said.
Another neighbor, Steven Watkins, said he had “no idea about anything.”
“What was going on before we even moved in here? It’s kind of really dark to think about,” he said.
Police would not disclose where the victims are from or if they ever tried to escape.

What's In Your Cart
You’ve got to give Amazon a lot of credit. Starting in 1995, they proceeded to change the way we shop. Starting first with an online bookstore, then expanding into music, movies, and then pretty much everything under the sun, we learned to how shop online thanks to them. While they weren’t the first (Powell’s Books, for example, beat Amazon by a year), they were certainly the best known.
And they are now a household word, to the point that their name has been verbified.
Amazon Prime, which debuted in 2005, taught us to shop often and enjoy unlimited two-day shipping. Rather than aggregate purchases like before that time, in an effort to reduce shipping costs, this helped us shop on impulse. It became even more pronounced once we had an app to do this. I am extremely guilty of it.
Not a company to necessarily be tied to the online arena, Amazon has slowly been tweaking its entree into the brick and mortar realm. It has launched, folded, and relaunched various iterations of mini supermarkets, and in 2017, it purchased the Whole Foods chain, which has more than 500 units. It was at Whole Foods that last year it launched “palm pay” technology.

At about the same time, though, the company realized its “Just Walk Out” program at other stores was not cutting it. Between erroneous charges and theft, it was posing a cash drain on the firm.
Today, we find Amazon opening four more Amazon Fresh stores in selected locations across the country. It is now using its proprietary Amazon Dash Carts, a smart shopping cart, as well as the palm pay that has been successful at Whole Foods.

Imagine a shopping cart with a massive computer apparatus where you would normally place your purse or small child. This device has a scanner and scale, and knows where you are in the store at all times. Shoppers can add and delete items easily, and if they logged in to their account, can finalize their transaction and walk out. Otherwise, go through a traditional checkout, where you can pay the old fashioned ways, or wave your palm.
I love it! I just wish one of these stores were a little closer. For now, I will have to be content with Whole Foods in Dallas and other large cities whenever I visit. Believe me, it feels very empowering to just wave my hand over a scanner.
By now you might be wondering whatever happened to online ordering, home delivery, and curbside pickup. These are still things, of course, but Amazon wisely realizes that shoppers actually want to go to a physical store at least some of the time. I consume a lot of fresh veggies and fruit, and like to inspect before I buy.
Then there’s the process of discovery, something that is harder to accomplish online even with the best suggestion engines. For example, I love perusing Whole Foods’ expansive fresh produce department for oddities, like romanesco, red kale, purple cauliflower, rambutan, and many other rarities. I am implicitly asking Whole Foods—and Amazon—to wow me.
While palm pay has done well, thanks in large part to the fact that unless someone chops off my hand or handcuffs me to go shopping, the jury is still out on the Dash Carts.
Amazon is trying hard to speed up the shopping process, especially the end of it when we have to either self-check or wait in line for an employee to do it. By allowing us to do it throughout the entire shopping visit, we are basically one tap away from heading to the car after we enter the last item.
Sure, there will always be pushback. Some folks are put off by palm pay, fearing privacy as well as the Mark of the Beast and all that end times stuff. Others may be fearful of all the technology, especially the smart carts. Business critics may argue that a touchscreen showing your running total may hamper impulse purchases, because shoppers are fully aware of the bill as they go along. Oh, and then there’s the fact that these carts cost up to $10,000 apiece, and could easily be damaged if left outside. Never mind the homeless person who decides one of these might just be perfect for wheeled conveyance of his possessions.
Regardless, though, we are experiencing change writ large, and Amazon continues to push the needle. In spite of those who may never buy into it all, collectively we have accepted everything Amazon has done in the last 29 years. Perhaps someday we’ll be able to enter a store and see smart shelves illuminating our frequent purchases, view personalized messages on the screen, or even hear voices if we’re wearing Air Pods.

How generative AI is creeping into EV battery development
Ten billion. That’s how many commercially procurable molecules are available today. Start looking at them in groups of five — the typical combination used to make electrolyte materials in batteries — and it increases to 10 to the 47th power.
For those counting, that’s a lot.
All of those combinations matter in the world of batteries. Find the right mixture of electrolyte materials and you can end up with a faster charging, more energy dense battery for an EV, the grid or even an electric airplane. The downside? Similar to the drug discovery process, it can take more than a decade and thousands of failures to find the right fit.
That’s where founders of startup Aionics say their AI tools can speed things up.
“The problem is there’s too many candidates and not enough time,” Aionics co-founder and CEO Austin Sendek told TechCrunch during the recent Up Summit event in Dallas.
Electrolytes, meet AI
Lithium-ion batteries contain three critical building blocks. There are two electrodes, an anode (negative) on one side and a cathode (positive) on the other. An electrolyte typically sits in the middle and acts as the courier to move ions between the electrodes when charging and discharging.
Aionics is focused on the electrolyte and it’s using an AI toolkit to accelerate discovery and ultimately deliver better batteries. Aionics’ approach to catalyst discovery has also attracted investors. The Palo Alto-based startup, which was founded in 2020, has raised $3.5 million to date, including a $3.2 million seed round from investors that included UP.Partners.
The startup is already working with several companies, including Porsche’s battery manufacturing subsidiary Cellforce. The company has also worked with energy storage firm Form Energy, Japanese materials and chemical maker Showa Denko (now Resonac) and battery tech company Cuberg.
This whole process starts with a company’s wish list — or performance profile — for a battery. Aionics scientists, using AI-accelerated quantum mechanics, can run experiments on an existing database of billions of known molecules. This allows them to consider 10,000 candidates every second, Sendek said. That AI model learns how to predict the outcome of the next simulation and helps select the next molecule candidate. Every time it runs, more data is generated and it gets better at solving the problem.
Enter generative AI
Aionics has taken this a step further, in some cases, by bringing generative AI into the mix. Instead of relying on the billions of known molecules, Aionics started using this year generative AI models trained on existing battery materials data to create or design new molecules targeted at a certain application.
The company is super-charging its effort by using software developed in the Accelerated Computational Electrochemical systems Discovery program at Carnegie Mellon University. Venkat Viswanathan, who was associate professor at CMU and led that program, is co-founder and chief scientist at Aionics.
Aionics has also started using large language models built on GPT 4 from OpenAI to help its scientists winnow down the millions of possible formulations before they even start running them through the database. This chatbot tool, which has been trained on chemistry textbooks and scientific papers selected by Aionics, isn’t used for the actual discovery, but it can be used by scientists to eliminate certain molecules that wouldn’t be useful in a particular application, Sendek explained.
Once trained with those textbooks, LLMs allow the scientist to query the model. “If you can talk to your textbook, what would you ask it?” Sendek said. But he was quick to note that this isn’t doing anything different than a person curating scientific papers. “This is just providing some next-level interaction,” he said, adding that everything is verifiable by pointing back to the sources used to train the chatbot.
“I think what is good for our field is that we’re not looking for specific facts, we’re looking for design principles,” he said as he explained the chatbot feature. Picking a winner

could you post the ending where you side with the SI and Julian gets pissed off by your decision? I also noticed that Julian never really introduces himself to anyone or says a simple goodbye to the courier, like, ever. I mean even after ten years or so he just resumes the conversation as if nothing happened. Not even the courier calls him out on this. I wonder why that is lol
Heh, regarding Julian’s conversational patterns, there’s a really interesting post here on friendship degradation mechanisms with ADHD! And Julian absolutely has ADHD.
And for the SI ending, ooh, I haven't got that one written down. I do want it handy for reference, so time for a speedrun with my SI-affiliated Toreador! Here's all the dialogue from the SI attack onwards.
Before you can speak, Lettow jumps up.
"What?" Julian says.
Your phone chimes. You run, throwing yourself out the door just as the missile hits.
Fragments of stone and metal fly over your head. You get clear, reaching your Escalade, and look back at the blown-apart warehouse.
Flames are everywhere. Your Beast screams in wild terror and only the greatest exercise of Willpower keeps you under control, but your body shakes uncontrollably. You have only one clear thought—run! Still, you grit your teeth and force yourself to look around.
Only the vampires survived the blast, and they look badly hurt. Prince Lettow took a direct hit; his clothes hang in tatters, like a shroud, and his skin is blackened. Julian and his helmeted assistant, Z, are burned and stunned. Julian's servants are gone.
Hunters are inbound. You see Bearcats and Humvees, police cruisers and Buick Avenirs. The floodlights turn on, illuminating the burning warehouse and hiding almost a hundred hunters in the glare as they advance.
A bullet zips past your head as a hunter in militia gear opens fire. An FBI agent waves for him to stop—it looks like there are orders for you not to be harmed—but that's hardly a perfect defense. You duck behind the Sprinter van. It might be time to get out of here.
There's just one problem: Julian is standing between you and your Escalade, a karambit in both hands. He spins the little blades.
"You did this," he says. "You betrayed us all."
[The sight of so much fire means that you are now in a fear frenzy and cannot think clearly unless you focus your Willpower or escape.]
> "I tried to warn you! I told you we were monsters, and I told you I would stop you."
Another explosion obliterates the computer shop. Bricks and pieces of rebar rain down.
Julian screams and rushes you, quick as the wind. Then he breaks away before he gets into karambit range. Even as he moves, his silhouette breaks up, becoming a pixelated gray blur as he fades from sight and circles you, looking for a chance to strike.
> I need to talk him down. "You can still escape, Julian. Don't let them kill you here." [CHA/MAN+Persuasion]
"How could you do this?" Julian cries.
"To save people!" you say. "And I'm trying to save you. Run, before it's too late!"
He looks at the raging inferno all around him, the ruins of his project, then back at you. Then he fades away.
That's the last time you see him.
More gunfire arcs around you and hammers the Sprinter van. You duck, then get into your Escalade and get away from the burning warehouse.
So I thought that was it, but hey! Apparently Lettow wanted his say, too!
You slide into heavy traffic, scanning the late-night vehicles for signs of pursuit. No hunters, no cops. Good. You have a moment to think as you scan the streets.
Front, back, left, right. Nothing. If you breathed, you'd be breathing a little easier. You're just turning your thoughts to the next step of this desperate plan when a shadow passes over you.
You look up. Riga.
Then you crane your head out of your window.
Something like Riga, but with a wingspan like a light aircraft.
Lettow is following you, and it looks like he cares more about revenge for your "betrayal" than about preserving the Masquerade.
And here come the hunters: Buick SUVs close in on your location. Others are on a nearby bridge. They're tracking Lettow, trying to get close enough to open fire with rifles or even heavier munitions. You're not sure Donati cares about collateral damage anymore. The SI will blow holes in Tucson to take down its Prince.
This is it, you realize. The Eagle Prince plans to destroy you here and now. But with so many hunters around him, he'll only have one shot at you. If you can buy yourself a few seconds and slip out of his sight, he won't be able to try again.
But how?

You drive slowly, looking for little-used routes that Lettow won't be able to track from above.
Tucson is a low, flat city, but finally you spot a messy construction site next to a parking garage.
You turn hard, cutting off oncoming traffic and racing into the construction site as Lettow dives for you.
But just as you planned, he has to back off. Tarps cover most of the site, and he'd get tangled if he dove. You keep moving, weaving through narrow alleys, then blowing through a Chevron station—the covering over the pumps prevents Lettow from reaching you easily.
Then you reverse right into an unfinished apartment complex that you saw last week, going straight through the building itself.
And he's lost you.
You roll out with your lights off and look up. Lettow is on a nearby building, scanning the darkness with his golden eyes.
That's when the SI lights him up. Heedless that they're operating in the middle of Tucson, dozens of agents and soldiers open fire with rifles and truck-mounted weapons.
Lettow lurches in midair. But he's still an elder vampire. The huge eagle dives, scythes through a truck full of agents, killing five in a single pass, and then rises into the air, higher, higher, until he and Riga disappear into the clouds.
The last you see of Prince Lettow, he's flying east, away from Tucson, out of his fallen domain.
You disappear into traffic, getting away from the SI as quickly as you can.
An inescapable element of existing as a vampire is ignorance. The Masquerade is a shadow that swallows clarity and understanding. People suspect and imply, but they rarely know for certain.
Your final nights in Tucson are frightening but uninteresting. You check the news, divest from your real estate holdings, and listen to word on the street.
Over the next few nights, during which time the news reports a few strange acts of violence, a terrorist attack, and a zoo escape, you learn that Prince Lettow was almost certainly destroyed. Dove perished in a midday raid on her haven, and nothing remains of the Viper but a gutted heap.
The city's Kindred are scattered and leaderless, easy pickings for hunters that are now free to operate during the day, dragging vampires out of their havens and destroying them.
Despite the chaos in the shadow-world you inhabit, Tucson looks the same. The city's downtown is not ablaze, the national guard hasn't been mobilized. It's just another shadow-war for vampires to fight.
And it's time to leave.
Your plans to escape Tucson run into surprisingly little red tape as you sell your bungalow and liquidate your other assets.
You got what you could out of your deal with the SI, but now it's time to go.
Go where? Tucson never felt like home, but it was, at least, a base of operations. You can't just stick to the road forever; the highways are too dangerous right now, with the SI active and your bridges with the Camarilla burned. You see a few possible futures.
From what you hear, Seattle is a key city for the Camarilla's blood trade. You could head up north and, if you have enough venture capital, try to strike it rich, really establish yourself.
But maybe money isn't everything. Could you work with hunters to stop more Cainite depredations? From what you hear, Dallas/Fort Worth is now completely out of control, with open fighting in the streets among different vampire factions. If the SI trusts you enough, you could return there and try to protect humanity from the predators in their midst.
But you still feel the alien vitae inside of you: the 2100 Formula. You've heard that a scholar of the Blood dwells in Denver, someone who could answer a lot of your questions. With the briefcase full of Julian's Program research, you should be able to make inroads there. The only difficulty will be finding this scholar, and avoiding the hunters who suspect what kind of power you carry in your Blood. If you head for Denver, you'll have to hope that you've left the Masquerade intact enough here that you can reach Colorado without an army of hunters following you.
Finally…maybe you could just try to live a life. You're dead, of course, but you could try existing as a person, if only for a few years. You've heard that San Francisco is a good place for that sort of thing ever since the old Prince left for LA. Maybe you could cultivate your Humanity and try to live, instead of simply exist.

One month later...
Dallas is burning.
Not literally, not really. From your vantage atop this parking garage, you can't see any fires. But you know that the Inquisition has torn through the city, scattered its warring factions, dragged predators screaming into sunlight every day for the past two weeks. You know all this because you've commanded them from the shadows.
You finish your work tonight.
"We're the masters of this city," one of D'Espine's beautiful ghouls says through bloody teeth. "Even if you kill me, we'll always be here. Feeding and taking and ruling from the shadows. We are immortal! We—"
The other hunters have heard enough. They toss him off the roof and head to their van.
You get back in your SUV because your final target is on the move. D'Espine—the last Cainite of any real power in Dallas—has left the Cinderblock.
This is how you've succeeded in Dallas: not just through your network of hunters, but because you know how to move through a city. As the Cainites have crawled into their holes, believing themselves safe, you've never stopped moving, never stopped striking. And now you're almost done.
You roll out of the parking garage and point your Escalade at the Cinderblock. By tomorrow night you'll be done here, and you'll hit the road.
RIP Lettow and Dove. Julian did get out, though!

The alarm sirens were blaring in the entire compound, a computer voice repeating the words, “Emergency Level Red, Code Black.” Level Red meant to get into a safe space fast, Code Black meant, “You should probably call your mum and tell her you love her a lot.” The entire team including you and your colleague Agent Magnolia instantly went into action, all silently hoping it was a test. “Friday? What the hell is going on?” Tony yelled out. “Sir, if there was a code double black, I would call it. Get in the bunker!” She urged him through the overwhelming amount of sounds the building was suddenly able to create. The blood drained out of multiple faces, not yours, you were trained for any kind of emergency situation. Not only an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D but also a SAID Agent. Trained for any thinkable Code Black. Agent Andromeda. The door to the bunker was open and after Friday confirmed that everyone had gone through the door Steve closed down the door manually in a blink of an eye. You all looked around, panting from running down the stairs and searching for the bunker entry that opened up. The place was small but big enough to live in for a while if that needed to be done. The room you’d entered was full of tech equipment and two walls full of canned foods and tap with a big filter construction connected to it. Stark never struck you as a survival kinda guy, at least not in this specific sense, but you weren’t complaining about clean water. There was an open door leading to a room full of bunk beds.
“So what the fuck happened, Friday?” Tony asked irritated by the adrenaline coursing through his veins. “There has been a series of explosions over heavily populated areas a few hours back, only detected by little equipment monitoring the air. Bioweapons. Hydra says they are responsible and that there is a highly contagious and deadly virus that was spread with these explosions.” Friday said it short and straight forward. “Then why aren’t we doing something against it?” Steve looked up at the speaker system with a frown on his face, ready to go back out again. “Mr. Rogers, until we know if that virus is deadly nobody will leave this bunker. I’m programmed to keep as much of this team alive in situations like this. Singapore DORSCON level red. World Health Organisation phase 6, approaching 7. That means it is a pandemic. If I let you out you could die in less than a week if this is as deadly as Hydra says.” The AI urged him. “Please update us.” Tony exhaled stressed leaning on the chair behind him, before sitting down. “Will do, sir,” Friday assured him.
Everyone started adventuring the Bunker. The last big exercise was a while ago and the team had grown since then. Clint found the room with 4 power generators first. “I hope we don’t need this. We are still powered by your reactor model, right?” Clint peaked out at Tony and got a nod back. The billionaire was properly done with what was happening. The only thing keeping him from exploding was Pepper going through his hair. Sam was the one finding all the gaming equipment and making an excited little dance in the middle of a possible apocalypse. “You’re the worst, Wilson.” Natasha rolled her eyes. “Come on, if we live in a time of bioweapons I want to at least have some distraction. Can’t fight a virus with military training.” He grinned. Agent Magnolia was the one finding the arsenal of weapons hidden in a giant box below the bunk that was behind the door. She showed you the knife ensemble that was included and grinned at you. “Visible forces definitely won’t kill us down here.” You grinned back.
“How many are we?” Clint called out to the others. Pepper looked up concerned, “Twelve, why?” “There are only 10 beds.” came back and some of the team members interchanged worried glances for a second. “We have married couple and work couples here. I think that won’t be the problem.” you smiled and looked around you at Pepper, Tony, Steve, and Nat. “So Pepper & Tony share a bed. Who else?” Sam asked, suddenly very tense again. “Nat?” Steve looked down at his favorite team member. “Yeah, I don’t mind. You’re warm.” she smiled back up at him. “That will be the least of the problems with 12 people in an enclosed space.” Dr. Helen Cho finally came to word after she had calmed down from her personal existential crisis about viruses. Wanda pointed at the walls and the sink, “For how long would the food and water here last?” “Depends if we only eat twice a day. Could hold up for 90 days. Water won’t be a problem with my filter system.” Tony explained. There was another concerned glare between everyone, hoping that 90 days would be enough for the virus to decently die down if it was as bad as expected. “There is confirmation of the virus to be deadly by 70-85% from a Silicon Valley lab.” Friday’s voice broke through after a little more than an hour. “Analyze how deadly, how long people need to die, which symptoms, how long the recovery period is for people living,” Bruce called out, sitting on one of the computers that he didn’t leave since they had entered the bunker. “And the international political climate,” Tony added. “And when it’s safe enough for me to start working on a vaccine with the help of people outside.” Helen also added her factors. “Will do.” The AI voice answered and the room went silent for a second.
“Which cities are targeted?” Agent Magnolia finally asked the important question “NYC, D.C., Atlanta, Miami, LA, Chicago, Denver.” Friday listed. “Atlanta has the most used airport in the world. Great. A perfect recipe for a pandemic. How long did it operate after explosion.” You shared, rubbing your temples and having your brain start to overwhelm just like the scientists’. “4 hours, Agent.” Came back. “We’re in here for a good few weeks.” You deadpanned, putting all the factors together in your head. This wasn’t going to be a quick in and out thing. You’d be in this small space for at least 1-2 months if not longer. Everyone went back to the bunk they had chosen and tried to relax. You were trying to write down possible outcomes and strategies based on that in a notebook you found. There were so many factors to viruses and how people are infected and from which strain the virus is made. You bet on smallpox, a hard thing to get with only two original samples existing in the entire world. One in the US, one in Russia. You bet on Russia since Hydra said they were responsible. They were trying to bring chaos to the world for the bad people to team up in a post-apocalyptic world so that they could take over control. You had learned how this worked over and over again. Not only as an Agent but also from books, movies and games. It was so obvious but that made it easier for you to go about possibilities to create a strategy.
“The entire US and most of the western world is currently on lockdown & people are being quarantined.” Friday updated the bunker again and an exhale went through the bedroom. “Martial law already in place?” Steve looked up from a book he had found. “Not yet, but we’re close.” “Chill, Rogers. You can’t do much more than you’re already doing.” Sam said hanging from the bed in front of him. “I know, it’s just. I hate this, all of it. I didn’t fight in World War II for this to happen at the hands of Hydra.” he frowned and got an understanding nod back. “Can’t we go out there without getting sick?” Bucky spoke up still wearing his pajama jumper from sleeping in that morning. “Well, depending on how deadly this is, no. If the whole thing is a little more clear I might send you out to get samples for me to work on it.” Helen yelled from the other room. “Would love to help with that.” he smiled. He’d do anything to help humanity. The had already ruined his life and he ruined other lives under their influence. That’s the least he could do. “It’s getting late, get yourself ready for bed.” Pepper came in with a motherly smile. “We need a monitor that’s just showing day and night scenes, this is gonna mess us up,” Magnolia muttered before opening one of the closets. The standard-issue clothing in the closets were mainly Large and a few double XL. There was a washer but the drying system needed to have the ventilator system work better again and that wouldn’t be happening until the virus was going slower. Two to three weeks in the same 4 clothing sets seemed okay. Anything longer would be horrible for everyone involved.
“Atlanta spreads to Beijing, Dubai, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Paris, Dallas, Seoul, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Singapore,” you mumbled laying in your bed, looking at the metal above you. “Hey, relax. We can’t do more than help the people working on it to do the right things.” Bucky looked over from the bed across. “I know. I know. That’s just, so many people dying.” You looked over. An understanding nod came back at you. In your head, you went with a 75% death rate and that was bad if you thought about the areas you just mentioned. Big Chinese cities, Central Europe, South East Asia.

MIT alumna Miranda McClellan ’18, MEng ’19 has been named a 2025 Schwarzman Scholar. In August 2024, she will join the program’s 150 scholars arriving from 43 countries and 114 universities from around the world. The Class of 2025 Scholars were selected from a pool of over 4,000 applicants. They will attend a one-year fully funded master’s degree program in global affairs at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.
McClellan and her fellow Schwarzman Scholars will engage in a graduate curriculum focused on the pillars of leadership, global affairs, and China with additional opportunities for cultural immersion, experiential learning, and professional development. The fellowship program aspires to create a global network of leaders equipped with a well-rounded understanding of China’s changing role in the world.
Hailing from Texas, McClellan earned a BS in computer science and a minor in African Studies from MIT in June 2018 and received an MEng in computer science in June 2019. While at MIT, she served on the board for the Black Students’ Union and presented recommendations for making the campus more inclusive. After graduating MIT, McClellan won a Fulbright grant to conduct research in Spain, where she studied applying machine learning to 5G networks.
McClellan was a fellow at the Internet Society, Center for AI & Data Policy, and the National Science Policy Network. Since 2020, she has been working as a data scientist at Microsoft, building machine learning models to detect malware. In 2022, she co-founded Black Arts DFW to promote equitable access to fine arts for Black patrons in the Dallas area. She also serves as a cybersecurity curriculum developer and mentor to improve representation of minority women in tech roles. As a Schwarzman Scholar, McClellan hopes to compare the impact of Chinese and U.S. policies on issues of cybersecurity, privacy, and AI fairness.
MIT’s Schwarzman Scholar applicants receive guidance and mentorship from the distinguished fellowships team in Career Advising and Professional Development and the Presidential Committee on Distinguished Fellowships. Students and alumni interested in learning more should contact Kimberly Benard, associate dean and director of distinguished fellowships and academic excellence.

yooooooo hell yeah!! i’ve got two main projects, one of them i’ve been working on a lot longer than the other, so i’ll just give a brief summary of the projects and then put the cast under a cut. <3 <3 (this got. so long i am so sorry, shoutout to anyone who makes it through this post sldkfjs)
74 seconds: spy thriller focusing on like, the b-team’s b-team. focuses on mobile unit a4, a rapid response deployment unit within molloy inc, a vigilante/spy for hire agency. it is explosively discovered molloy has been infiltrated by the karlson group (a rival organization of mercenaries, this is not very high brow tbh it’s pretty straightforward mission impossible nonsense), and a trusted member of a4 is a double agent, sending him on the run. except he isn’t. he’s a triple agent who’s been undercover the entire time. when another member of a4 disappears, he is the prime suspect, and is left to figure out what actually happened on his old, while evading his own team.

pierce mawdsley - a4′s tower contact. the tower is where the support members of the mobile teams are stationed, and as a result most tower agents, including pierce, are not field certified. incredibly smart and for the most part optimistic and cheerful. geeky, for sure. feels disconnected from the rest of the team because of his placement in the tower. he’s the one who goes missing, from the parking garage when the infiltration is exposed.
vincent “vin/vinny” alverez: a4′s second in command. quiet and reserved, but protective and kind. very good listener. has been with molloy the longest of anyone on a4. was part of a pilot program testing a type of memory altering technology that was discontinued after errors with the initial rounds of testing. as a result of this, vin cannot see the color yellow, instead seeing a kind of static, or thing-you-can’t-look-right-at feeling. listens to and sings along with a lot of johnny cash.
phillipa “pippa” baker - head of a4. feels unqualified because between her and vin, he has seniority, but she was picked for greater leadership potential seen by the current leader of the organization, claire molloy, with whom pippa is longtime friends. has a lot of doubt about pretty much everything but disguises it well. a pragmatist. personally selected every member of a4. feels responsible for them in a major way.

yadriel salazar - a teacher at the only school for miles. widely seen as pretty no-nonsense and irritable sometimes, but secretly a master of practical jokes. dead-pan humor. much better with kids than he is with adults his own age. 
william daniel rodgers - local handyman and mister fix-it. goes by ‘wd’ because he insists ‘william daniel, two first no middle’ is a name you have to earn, and he’s still trying to figure out how to get his shoes on the right feet in the morning. happy-go-lucky. honestly a bit of a himbo. we love wd but we despair for him.
judith glassman - synagogue coordinator in the nearest actual city, also works in the faith house in their own town (a small multipurpose building that is useable for anyone who needs a place to pray or celebrate holidays, the place is too small and eclectic to have much that’s specific). highly organized. is the one despairing for wd. has been head over heels for the town’s florist, naomi, for months.
elizabeth lee - runs the paper by herself with two part-time interns. opposite of highly organized, but she swears she knows where everything is. incurably nosy and channels this into her profession. can’t really turn the journalist in herself off, which can be good and can be bad.

Four hours a day; how teacher contracts are shaping remote learning

A handful of district agreements illustrate how teachers’ hours and duties are shaped by district remote learning programs.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has put a magnifying glass on issues such as the digital divide and the challenges of remote learning, the crisis has also tasked teachers with learning new methods of teaching and following a different set of work rules governing pay, hours, and required duties.
“The first priority for most school districts has been ensuring the safety and nutrition of their students,” noted Nicole Gerber, director of strategic communications at the National Council of Teacher Quality (NCTQ), a policy think tank based in Washington, D.C. “But now the focus is increasingly on how to keep students learning—and that requires forging teacher policies to address issues about which no one had ever given much thought.”
Earlier this month, NCTQ issued a report analyzing 41 school districts’ policies relevant to teacher work, pay, and leave in situations of emergency school closures. It found that fewer than half had such policies in place before the pandemic.
To help understand the range of agreements shaping remote learning efforts in districts, The Grade looked at these findings and spoke to school districts and union representatives in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and Dallas.
What we found is that most districts guaranteed teachers’ pay and established a minimum number of hours within the 40-hour workweek for teachers to engage with students and parents.
Education reporters can investigate their own districts to see if such agreements exist, where they fall within the range of agreements described here or in the NCTQ report, and how they affect the provision of remote learning.
GUARANTEED PAY
With the exception of Dallas, all the districts mentioned are guaranteeing normal paychecks and benefits to all salaried and hourly employees, including teachers and long-term substitutes, while schools are closed. The Dallas Independent School District approved an Extended Emergency Leave through its school board.
In Miami, a Letter of Understanding (LOU) was signed even before the March 13 school closure and a more recent agreement was reached after spring break.
“We started conversations with the district early and had to come up with a new emergency plan”, Karla Hernandez-Mats, president of the United Teachers of Dade (UTD), said in a phone interview. “We have some measures in place learned from hurricane season but not to this extent. This is different.”
UTD could sign the agreement because the union has a “good relationship” with the district. “It is not perfect,” Hernandez-Mats added. “But we look through all these things with a lot of compassion because distance learning is fairly new for teachers.” According to Hernandez-Mats, the language of their agreement was adapted by other districts in Florida.
Los Angeles Unified School District reached a more comprehensive labor deal with the United Teachers of Los Angeles to formalize district operations during closures, which are expected to last the rest of this school year.
The union in Chicago assured some work expectations and remote learning guidance for its teachers.
In New York City, the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) and the district have issued informal joint communications on FAQs and contractual issues.

SETTING HOURS
Most of the teachers’ contracts remain in place, requiring 40 hours of work per week, but teachers’ availability for student interactions via email or online platforms varies across districts.
“We want to make sure schools don’t want to recreate a normal schedule minute-to-minute because that is not necessarily replicable in a remote environment,” Dick Riley, press secretary of the UFT, said in a phone interview. “School days should be flexible.”
New York City teachers are expected to plan lessons and instructional materials within the contractual workday, but there are no rules about working a specific number of hours.
In Miami-Dade, the agreement says teachers should provide no fewer than three hours per day for online interaction with their students.
The requirement for Chicago educators is four hours, including two hours of live virtual engagement (Google Meet) and two hours for other tasks, such as giving feedback or chatting with parents.
For teachers in L.A., the agreement acknowledges that teachers could need time for taking care of their own children, elderly parents, or sick relatives. They are required to work four hours per day including planning time, training, and faculty meetings.
Dallas encourages teachers to “strictly” keep their work under 40 hours per week, in order to not accrue overtime, but does not specify how many of those hours teachers should be available for interaction with students.

ONLINE TEACHING
For some districts, such as Los Angeles, worries about the security of video services scuttled plans to require teachers to provide live video instruction.
Transitioning to online teaching quickly has been difficult for teachers in Miami, said Hernandez-Mats. The first day of school closure, 15,000 teachers registered for a three-day online course, called Transform Learning with Microsoft Teams. “The workload is greater and so is the amount of stress,” she said.
In Chicago, some teachers said they are not well equipped. Although the district is providing new devices to students for online learning, those are very limited for educators.
“Some teachers’ equipment is just not enough,” Chris Geovanis, director of communications for the Chicago Teachers Union, said in a phone interview. “For Google Classrooms, one needs a computer with a lot of RAM memory, a fast processor, huge broadband, Microsoft functions, etc.”
“I am actually working on a desktop,” Geovanis added.

To be clear, remote learning agreements aren’t limited to pay, hours, and teaching strategies. Other issues reporters can consider are if teachers were trained to shift their teaching online, how districts are outfitting teachers with the needed hardware, and how time off and leave policies have been adjusted during closings. In at least one district — NYC — the new agreement stipulates that teachers can take four days of paid leave at a future date in the case of losing a close family member, due to the current impossibility of getting together for funerals.
Created in a crisis, these agreements are a core part of district remote learning programs that education reporters are covering.
