Bats are sky puppies.
BATS: AN ANATOMY GUIDE FOR ARTISTS & ANIMATORS
Bats are weird and confusing animals. I am not an artist but I have worked with many species of bats. Let me try to explain the weird flap mammals for you.
WINGS: THEY’RE JUST WEIRD HANDS
Hopefully you already know that bat wings are just big ol’ hands. They have five fingers (though the pointer finger is shortened). I’ve put my hand at the bottom there- just make the palm much smaller and the fingers much longer, and you have a bat hand.

Bg3 has neither an Asian nor monk companion so I took matters into my own hands.
Tumblr media
Here’s my idea for a companion character. He’s not supposed to be tav/durge but a character you would recruit and have on your party like Gale or Karlach. And yes, he would be romanceable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve been thinking a lot about how he would fit into the storyline and gameplay. Here’s the notes I have on my phone regarding his companion quest and hypothetical game mechanics:
Upon first recruiting him, he will tell the group he got captured amidst their pilgrimage across Faerun but in actuality Yeon Ryang was searching for their brother, a leading figure in a growing Kara-Turan crime syndicate
Complicated sibling relationship™
Pretty early on you will learn of his keen disliking of Kozakura and its people. Prying further you’ll discover that he was refugeed as a young child due to a particularly violent Kozakuran invasion attempt of Koryo.
Traveling with Yeon Ryang and garnering approval from him will allow you to refer to him as just Ryang. You will also learn that before he was a monk, he was a criminal. A petty thief at first but his sense of entitlement grew alongside the severity of his crimes. It’s a past he holds ever so shamefully and the reason why he blames himself for his brother’s upcomings.
You’ll learn this past after interacting with the Zhentarim and later the Guild which activate unique cutscenes for him. He will strongly disapprove if you earnestly work for these crime groups and approve if you fight against them. If you romance him and help the Zhentarim overthrow the Guild, he will break up you as well, believing the Zhent to be the greater of two evils.
After learning said past, you also learn that Ryang is highkey obsessed of cleansing himself of his past sins and of all sins entirely. Ryang refuses to let go of his shame over himself and part of his companion is quest is helping him get over it for better or for worse. In the end, either he’ll become cynical to his shame and uses it to justify his return to crime or he’ll acknowledge that his shame will always be a part of him that he can only accept it and try to better himself as much as possible.
Romancing him will give you the dialogue option to ask about his missing pinkie fingers in which he’ll explain to you that it was in fact the head monk of his monastery who severed them as a show of reform and discipline to Ryang. Yeon Ryang doesn’t resent his teacher for this and instead sees it as a deserving punishment and reminder.
Later on it’s revealed that his brother, Yeon San who is currently operating under the name Sanjong, is in alliance with the cult of Bhaal and thus the cult of the absolute by supplying them with paralytic poisons from Kara-Tur (the same Dolor uses). He is hoping that when the Absolute takes control over Faerun, that’ll they extend a hand in an assault against Kozakura
If you encounter Sanjong and kill him without Ryang in your party or kill him without talking to Ryang beforehand, you’ll have to pass a dc30 persuasion check to keep Ryang from leaving your party permanently
His companion quest ends with a showdown between him and his brother where you’ll have to fight Sanjong and his goons. Once you bring him to low health or knock him prone, a cutscene occurs where you can convince Ryang to either spare or kill Sanjong. Remaining silent will result in him sparing his brother and leaving the two to repair their relationship
Whether Sanjong is killed or not, the player will have another choice in influencing whether Ryang will either join the ranks of the Kara-turan crime guild or continue pursuing total redemption
Basic rundown: His companion quest centers around the idea of plausibility of change and Yeon Ryang’s feelings of responsibility over his younger sibling. Either you can lead him down the path of rejecting his monastic ways and reverting back to his criminal life (either alongside his brother or replacing him) or you can inspire him to continue traversing across Toril (with or without his brother) to truly realize enlightenment.

hope this doesn't sound patronising but the case of koryo-saram kinda makes me so sad because they immigrated to russia long before korea was even divided, and most of them afaik came from what is now modern north korea. their dialect was never a written language, so it's dying out, and if their descendants do learn korean it's the south korean standard. of course i understand why, but it's painful to see the clash between modern politics and an identity to which it is not applicable... to my knowledge there's no movement to save this variety of korean either.

hello my beebs (again)! it's lyna again, just making a separate intro for joon. he's my lil adventurer draconic bloodline sorcerer who loves going out into the world to explore, learn about dragons, and just do cool stuff! he's very wholesome, has a nice cozy home life and just wants to learn more about his origins and where his bloodline comes from! he's a good boi. if you'd like to plot with him just give this a like! i haven't made any open connections for him (yet, working on it) but his bio will be under the cut if you're interested in perusing him!
“⸺ ✧˖° Introducing the adventurer KIM JOON, a earnest HUMAN with a fondness of dragon lore and alchemy/herbology. Their admirers endlessly praise them for their skills as a courageous SORCERER & their work as a GUILD MEMBER and ADVENTUERER. On the contrary; their rivals will warn you of their tendency to be careless and unintelligent.
NAME: kim joon NICKNAMES/ALIAS: joonie GENDER: male PRONOUNS: he/him BIRTHDAY: december 18th AGE: 26 SPECIES: human, koryoan SEXUALITY: pansexual CURRENT LOCATION: jeosung, koryo OCCUPATION: adventurer (does alchemy on the side) ETHNICITY: koryoan NATIONALITY: koryoan RELIGION: bahamut SOCIAL CLASS: adventurer ADVENTURE CLASS: sorcerer - draconic bloodline, lightning
FACECLAIM: bang chan, stray kids EYE COLOR: cobalt blue (draconic bloodline) HAIR COLOR: dark brown HAIR TYPE: wavy BODY TYPE: burly HEIGHT: 5'11" WEIGHT: 190 lbs SCENT: dragon scales TATTOOS: multiple draconic runes that cover his arms, back, shoulders, chest and legs PIERCINGS: ears: lobes, upper lobes, and helix SCARS: multiple across numerous part of his body from previous battles OTHER: has a bright blue shimmer to his skin from the scales of his draconic bloodline growing in
bullets:
born in jeosung to a set of human parents who own a potion shop. mom was skilled in alchemy, dad in herbology
joon ran around the shop as a little helper growing up, quickly picked up on magic and learned little cantrips like mage hand to help out where he could
mom and dad were both sorcerers, one from storm sorcery and the other from the lightning draconic bloodline, mastering weather magic together and fitting like two peas in a pod, had been former adventurers together and made the perfect match
joon had the picture perfect example of true love in his parents growing up and this has shaped a lot of who he is: loving, caring, unsuspecting, trustworthy, imbued with the need to do the right thing, help those in need, give freely
has a younger sibling [wc] that took after storm sorcery while joon inherited the draconic bloodline
the shimmer of his scales started showing around 7 years of age and he always thought they were super cool and pretty
his eyes changed colour as his scales grew in and he also loves them
in his preteen years his magic developed further into first level spells and he grew more curious about both alchemy and dragons
his parents showed him how to make some basic potions and he practiced every day
he asked his parents about dragons and draconic history and lore, but even the parent with the draconic bloodline didn’t know much.
joon started going to the library to research draconic history, magic, lore, etymology, and learned to speak draconic in the process. he didn’t find enough to quell his intrigue, and so he decided to start training up his magic more so he could venture out to historic and ancient sites to learn more
between helping at the shop when he’s in town, joining up at an adventuring guild, and practicing his magic, joon has become a capable adventurer
has gone on many quests with various groups and companions, has seen near-death more times than he’d like to admit, but has acquired a lot of knowledge that he documents in a series of texts called ‘Joon’s Guide to Draconic Discovery’. he has written enough for three volumes so far, and is working on the fourth currently.

Types of religion in Korea
For many Koreans, the emphasize spiritual aspects of life and religion are a source of strength and support. Statistics indicate that most Koreans have a religion- Christian, 49 percent; Buddhist, 47 percent, Confucianist, three percent; Shamanist, Ch´ondogyo (Religion of the Heavenly Way) and others, 1 percent (CIA, 2000). Historically, kings in the United Silla and Koryo dynasties encouraged Buddhism, while those in the Choson dynasty switched to Confucianism, blaming corrupted Buddhism for the previous kingdoms’ demise. Currently, Koreans enjoy freedom of choice in religion and lead a rather harmonious life despite their diverse religions, even among family members. The various belief systems are mutually reinforcing and do not conflict with values that underlie the daily lives of Koreans. Koreans tend to be open to the teachings of other religions and respect others’ choices, so they are puzzled when violent wars break out over religious conflicts in other parts of the world.
It is not a surprise then, that the beliefs and values reflected in common Korean culture are a sophisticated mixture of Buddhism, Confucianism, Shamanism and other religions. Influences from Buddhism are reflected in attitudes of benevolence toward all living creatures and beliefs about this world and a thereafter in the concept of karma. Confucian influences are seen in ancestor worship and the moral codes for proper human relationships. Shamanism is reflected in animistic orientation and thinking. The Umyang theory (Yin-Yang in Chinese) is seen in folk religious beliefs of the human as an integral part of nature, which requires people to learn the ways of nature and harmonize with them. Confucianism is more a philosophy than a religion, but the teachings of Confucianists pervade the way Korean people have thought and behaved over the past five to six centuries. Many believe that Korea was influenced more by Confucianism than was China, Confucius’ native country. In addition to Confucianism, the lives of Korean immigrants are also heavily influenced by Buddhism and Christianity in ways that are briefly summarized below. Nearly half of Koreans consider Buddhism their religion and think of “Buddha’s birthday” as a national holiday parallel to “Jesus’ birthday,” Christmas. Buddhism is reflected in the beliefs of reincarnation and retribution. For example, all creatures alive in the world must go through an endless cycle of birth, getting old, illness, and death. In the Buddhist belief, disability is part of a natural life process. Buddhists emphasize benevolence and believe in reincarnation, in other words, what you are now depends upon how you lived in your previous life. How you live your life now will decide your life after death. Christianity was introduced to Korea in the 18th century through the Jesuit missionaries. It spread so quickly that the king considered a threat to national unity and actively persecuted the early missionaries. In the late 19th century, Protestant missionaries arrived and established many hospitals and schools. Koreans have embraced Christianity in its many forms. Currently, nearly half of the Korean population is Christian and many of the largest Christian churches in the world are located in Korea. Membership in Korean-American Christian churches also has grown rapidly.

bringing this back ty superintendent-b for adding on!!
because istg the only argument people can come up with are “jun has a slavic accent he can’t be asian.”
and this is coming from me, an ACTUAL SLAVIC PERSON, with family in former soviet states: there are so many asians (koryo-saram, sakha/yakut as two example i know but so many more ethnic minorities, chinese either within russia or on the border, asians from across the continent who lived during the soviet era within the union whether for work or studies) who have learned slavic languages and just so happen to adopt the same accent as us.
you are most certainly free to have headcanons for him since 343 hasnt released a whole lot abt noble team lore but if they put him on the cover for AAPI month…that should tell you something i think
i knew jun was asian but specifically chinese? that i didnt know (unless its not confirmed). i always headcanoned him as qazaq

Do you happen to know much about Honduran fruit bats? I'm having a hard time finding info on them since they're so tough to come across, and when I do it seems to always be a different bat mistaken for one because of white fur. I'm especially perplexed by their faces, they're built like they're meant to echolocate, even though they EXCLUSIVELY eat fruit, yet STILL only hunt for food at night?. They're very weird little guys
Honduran white bats are members of the bat family Phyllostomatidae, the New World leaf-nosed bats- which you can tell by the leaf-shape on their nose. And you’re right, they do echolocate.
Tumblr media
In fact, many fruit-eating bats still need to echolocate, because even though they may not need to use it to hunt (though some fruit-eaters may still nab a bug when they spot one) they still need to navigate through the darkness.
Why would a fruit-eater only come out at night? Well, for many reasons. There’s less competition at night, for starters- most primates and birds have gone to sleep. This means there are also fewer flying predators like hawks. It’s also cooler at night, which can prevent a flying mammal that’s working its metabolism to the limit from overheating.
Many plant species accommodate nocturnal customers by adding things like leaves or flowers that reflect sound in a certain way when fruit, nectar, or pollen is available. They also put out stronger smells that lure in the bats. (One species of pitcher plant uses sound reflection to invite insectivorous bats to come poop in it.) So being diurnal is in now way a prerequisite if you want to eat fruit- I myself enjoy a good late night banana.
I would bet that the white-furred bats people keep mistaking for Honduran white bats are Northern ghost bats, which belong to a totally different family. Easiest way to tell them apart is that ghost bats have no leaf on their nose and instead look like grumpy little goblins.
Tumblr media
Maybe people also mistake yellow-winged bats for them (again, from a completely different family) or desert long-eared bats or even ghost false vampire bats, but I think the differences there are more obvious unless you’re really unfamiliar with bats in general.
Also, if you see a bat that looks like this… it’s not a real bat, it’s a pin made by CreturFetur on Etsy. Absolutely adorable, but baffling that it keeps being used as though it’s a photo of the real thing.

This might be one of the few outward signs that Fai’s starting to evolve by this point.
On the one hand he’s turned his humour up to 11 in every conversation in this country because he almost died in Outo. He almost died in Koryo too, and earlier in Outo Kurogane had to stop him getting hit by an attack, but he survived both those encounters. BUT HE DIDN’T SURVIVE SEISHIROU. HE GOT HIT. HE DIED. There was moment where he believed it too - as Seishirou struck the final blow and Fai was hit with the overwhelming knowledge that this is it. It’s over.
He failed. Not only was his brother never coming back, but it was ALL for NOTHING. Hundreds of years of self loathing and suffering and depression and watching everyone he ever cared about die before his eyes (or turn into a mass murderer) and for what? To die in a brief scuffle over Seishirou? It wasn’t even ABOUT him, but he died all the same, and there was nothing he could do to stop it.
Of course none of it ended up being real, which would have been a relief, but I think it’s also caused Fai to turn his happy fun persona up to maximum to cover up any internal panic he may have gone through. He almost lost everything, so now he’s compensating to avoid having to think about it.
It’s probably also a good way to disperse any lingering guilt he may have felt about betraying his brother, too. His life isn’t his, after all. It’s a token to trade for the real Fai. So if he wasted that defending Sakura, and his brother never got to live as a result? How might that eat up at him, knowing that he would have sold away his only chance to revive Fai, who he’s known since birth, for some people he’s only known for a little while?
And so! Fai stays behind. He rationalises it on the previous page as well, going through a list of reasons why each of the others couldn’t stay behind, making it very clear that he’s a very good choice and no-one should argue. Fai’s course correcting - preserving his own life again, because that’s what he should have been doing all along. Yet he lost sight of that in Outo.
But STILL he can’t help himself but check in with Sakura - he asks if she’s ok with going ahead, if it’s what she wants, despite the danger.
He knows the answer already. But he still gives her the choice.
Because deep down he still cares for Sakura, and the others, and though it runs counter to everything he’s trying to do these are the seeds of his growth towards being a different person. In Acid Tokyo he will throw away everything he has to defend them all - but right now he’s still learning to think it might even be an option.

i remember the time when someone wanted to organise a tour through korean kolkhozes for south koreans but the problem is that
1) most koreans don't live in rural areas anymore;
2) the most notable places with korean history are qızılorda (which is on the other side of the country away from almatı) and üctöbe (3-4 hours away from almatı by car);
3) üctöbe's history is mostly preserved through the local korean graveyard and a single very old korean lady who was a child when her family was deported;
4) bringing south koreans tourists to gawk at a small town with nothing to do but look at graves and harass an elderly woman about traumatic memories is. uh. a morally dubious idea;
5) koryo-saram don't speak koryo-mar anymore—the older generations, i.e. deportees and their children might still remember, but it was never a written language, so at best you'd only speak it or at least write approximations of pronunciation in cyrillic; and the younger generation doesn't know korean at all, and if they learn it they learn the standard of south korea.
so yeah... no kolkhoz tours

Mu-yeol nodded, understanding that feeling of not thinking there was anything to make of yourself well. It was strange how having grown up in a hollow that wasn't as intertwined with the human world as Enchantra's hollow, Mu-yeol hadn't been raised to care about human success metrics. In most ways he still didn't, except one. He so desperately wanted to be seen as intelligent and capable, as if that could make up for him being born a fairy. Except in early 2000's South Korea, he never was going to be seen as intelligent. It didn't matter that he taught himself to speak Japanese and English well, or that he just up and decided to learn basic Russian phrases in a weekend to communicate workplace tasks with a Koryo-saram coworker from Uzbekistan, or that he could forage for edible plants wherever anything grew, or that he altered and patched up almost every item of clothing he and So-yeon had, or how many books he read, or how knowledgeable he was about countries he could never afford to travel to. There was no piece of paper with his name on it that said he was smart.
It never bothered him until it was pointed out to him, usually by someone So-yeon had to work with but couldn't actually stand. He was never embarrassed about having never spent a day in a classroom while his wife was a Ph.D candidate until someone brought it up like he should be.
It only got worse when Nemo started dance classes and Mu-yeol had to interact with the dance mums and hear about their jobs, degrees, and their husbands impressive education. At least people in England were better at hiding their shock when you admit you have absolutely no formal education.
"Ah--- the rabbits last year. Makes sense now, how excited you were to meet the wild bunnies." Mu-yeol had just thought he really wanted the wild bunnies to think he was their friend. Who wouldn't? They were so cute!
"Did your mother hound you about grades or was it more like 'please just finish school, I don't care if you're last in your year.' Do they do that here? In Korea, they rank students in each year by academic performance and it's public knowledge. Gets scary competitive -- so I hear."

hello my beebs, tis i, lyna (she/her, 25+, est) here with my beautiful brain child i am SO EXCITED FOR named sura. he's a noble in the fiendish courts (though he doesn't really wanna be) and takes delight in corrupting people's hearts and souls. his strategy is normally to appeal to the deadly sin someone is weak to and exploit it in hopes that when they die they go to hell and become infernal like him. he's quite evil, and i'm very excited to pen such a devilishly devious muse. below the cut is his bio, and i have some premade open plots for him here if you're interesed! please like this for plotting! i'll message you, or you can add me on discord: @plumboss!
⸺ ✧˖° Introducing the noble lord sura, a cunning DEVIL with a fondness of music and poetry. Their admirers endlessly praise them for their skills as a charismatic BARD & their work as the court of flames' INFERNAL ARCHIVIST. On the contrary; their rivals will warn you of their tendency to be manipulative and malicious. ⦁ faceclaim: park seonghwa, ateez . mun: lyna, she/her.
THE DEVIL IN ME
“⸺ ✧˖°
NAME: [classified] NICKNAMES/ALIAS: sura GENDER: male PRONOUNS: he/him BIRTHDAY: unknown AGE: stopped counting after 300 SPECIES: fiend - devil  SEXUALITY: chaotic bisexual CURRENT LOCATION: jeosung, koryo OCCUPATION: nobleman and scholar of infernal history ETHNICITY: infernal NATIONALITY: koryaan RELIGION: demonic SOCIAL CLASS: nobility ADVENTURE CLASS: bard - college of whispers
FACECLAIM: ateez seonghwa EYE COLOR: red [when not glamoured] HAIR COLOR: black HAIR TYPE: straight BODY TYPE: lean athletic HEIGHT: 6’1” WEIGHT: 170 lbs SCENT: eau d’avernus TATTOOS: none PIERCINGS: ears and tongue SCARS: one long scar down the side of his neck, apparent scars around his horns from when they grew in
bullets:
born in avernus, was quickly summoned to jeosung by his family to avoid the blood war front lines
was raised in jeosung as part of the nobility, with distant blood ties to one of the archdevils of the nine hells serving as his claim to his title
unlike some of his brothers, sisters and cousins, sura never took to any one skill that he was supremely proficient at, but was rather skilled in most things he tried, and therefore ended up training as a bard
he is proficient with many instruments, his favored instruments being the flute and the lute
can pretty much talk his way out of anything or convince people he is more capable than he actually is
chose the name ‘sura’ for himself as an alias to keep his real name a secret, though somewhere in the nine hells there exists half a stone tablet with part of his real name recorded on it in infernal. the other half is in his possession and locked away for safe keeping.
found himself enjoying his studies more than combat and spell casting, and so he decided to make a profession out of his learned knowledge and become a scholar and tutor
he began forming an archive of infernal texts he safeguards in his estate as part of his scholarly duties
he visits court, sure, but it’s a little dull for his tastes, though he does his best to make the most of it and have his fun, either through conversation or making a little impromptu performance
he uses his tutoring as a way to lure in potentials for becoming fiends, using his role as a mentor to influence human souls so that they might go to hell upon death and become devils themselves
his methods usually include pushing someone towards acting on the deadly sin they’re most guilty of and then appearing as an ally when their sinful acts blow up in their face
morals are clearly corrupt, his main goal is to avoid his name being discovered since he enjoys controlling others, rather than them controlling him
is more so guilty of apathy and boredom rather than selfishness, he toys with people to entertain himself more than anything
will always try to appear as a friend rather than a foe, this is his way
dresses in the finest, trendiest [and most revealing] clothing
he’s all about having fun really
