Caught Up Chapter 2 - Off Duty
RYU JUN YEOL’s POV
Radio: Station! Station! Requesting for back up!
The radio static echoed through his entire room as soon as he got out of the shower. He smirk upon hearing the sound of his colleague’s voice requesting for back up. It’s going to be a busy day, he thought.
He grabbed his pants and shirt, and started to get dressed while still listening to the continuous exchange of reports on the radio.
Police 1: We have a 10-31 situation here. Could be a 10-80. Please send back up!
Police 2: What is your 10-20?
Police 1: Just a few blocks past the Yong-in University. Hurry!
Police 2: Arasso! We are sending Team B right away. Keep us posted!
(10-31 is a police code for robbery, 10-20 is for location, and 10-80 means there will be a chase.)
“YONG-IN University? That’s closer to another station! These guys never learn.” He said to himself as he hurriedly put on his jacket and looked for his keys. It’s time to get to work.
Although technically, it isn’t. But he wouldn’t be the infamous Ryu Jun Yeol if he wouldn’t join in the chase.
Ryu Jun Yeol is a 30-year old senior cop based in Jangan Police Department. And he is always about one thing: doing his job. He believes that regardless of any other situation, the safety of his people will always be his priority. But he is not famous in their department for his mission accomplishments and/or other remarkable performance. He’s well-known for something else.
Doing things he was told not to do.
Including going to work when he is off duty.
Just like today.
He got into his car and started heading to Yong-in. He turned on the police radio installed in his own car to monitor the situation. It was then reported that Team B had already been dispatched to the location and when he was just 5 five minutes away, the chase for the culprit has started.
Radio: He got away. The suspect is about 5’4” tall and he’s wearing a black jacket and dark blue cap. He’s also carrying a small duffel bag.
The culprit apparently robbed the bank located few blocks away from the school. As he listened, he tried to figure out where the robber will be going. It’s what he do best.
“Hmm.. where are you headed?” He thought.
The suspect is carrying a bag so he wouldn’t be able to get away that fast. He made a turn and parked at the end of a small alley before he got of his car carrying only his precious hand cuffs.
“Making a turn on the 3rd street, you should be coming from here in 3…2…”
Before he was able to finish counting, a tall guy wearing a jacket and dark blue cap while carrying a duffel bag, got out of the small alley and ran past him.
“Yaaah! I’m not done counting!”
The suspect was a few metters away from him before he started running after him. In just a few minutes, he was able to caught up to the guy and he jump over him. He has able to easily put him down and immediately hand cuffed him.
“Not so fast, bad guy. You’ve been busy, huh?”
“Yah, let me go.”
“Aiiissssh! Shut it. Come with me!”
With a sheepish grin on his face, he drove the car on the way to the Jangan station with the culprit, letting everyone involved in the car chase that he already got him.
“See you later, boys!”
He let out a short giggle as he imagined what could be waiting for him at the station. Looks like once again, it’s not only the culprit whose pissed at him this early.
They arrived at the station within a few minutes and he carried the culprit inside the station. He was welcomed with piercing looks from his colleagues, a few smiles from the people from his team, and a grumpy look from their superior. He was able to catch the culprit, but obviously, not everyone is happy about it.
“Good morning, everyone! Yah, JoonGi-ssi, can you get me a coffee, please? Kumapta!”
He walked past by his hoobae, who gladly obliged to his request. He handed the culprit to his collegue, Baek Dong Woo. The leader of Team B. His rival.
“Baek Dong Woo-ssi, here’s your culprit.” He said cheerfully.
Baek Dong Woo ordered one of his subordinates to take the suspect before he faced him again – still with a smug face.
“Ryu Jun Yeol, what the hell do you think you’re doing?”
“Uhm, let me guess. Ahh, that’s right. My job. Wae?”
“But you are off duty and my team was called for back-up. Not you.”
“And your point is?”
“My point is, you should let those on duty to do their job. You should’ve stayed out of it.”
“Ah. So you’re point is, I should ignore the call for back up even when I am the closest available cop in the area. That I should’ve let him ran past me even if I could totally help everyone to catch him?”
“Ryu Jun—“
“You know how I am, Dong Woo-ssi. The safety of my people comes first, regardless if I am on duty or not. Now, if you are so pissed because I was able to catch the culprit before your entire team could, then get over it. Because guess what, I don’t care.”
“Yaaah!”
“Besides, the other police department was closer to the scene, why did you respond, anyway? You never learn, Baek Dong Woo.”
“Ryu Jun Yeol, you assho—“
“Watch your language, Dong Woo. I am still 3 months ahead of you.”
He gave Baek Dong Woo a pat on the shoulder before he could even finish swearing at him, then he walked past everyone else. Kang Joon Gi handed him his coffee as he walked straight to his desk.
Joon Gi followed him.
“You are so cool, Sunbae.”
He gave him a high five as he sat on his desk. He’s glad that at least the people from his own team thinks he’s cool, because everyone else doesn’t. Ryu Jun Yeol is Janga-gu Police Department’s infamous ignorant asshole. He always finishes his job, alright. But there were very few instances that he follow the rules and his colleagues believe that he lacks respect for everyone.
“Joon Gi-ah. The transfers will arrive today, right?”
“Ne, Sunbae. One of them is from Daegu and the other one will come from Gwangju. They will arrive today, probably any minute now.”
“Ah. One of them will be a part of our team in exchange for Lee Woo Jin, right? Who is it gonna be?”
“Uhm, I don’t know yet. But I heard one of them is a girl.”
“Aish. I hope we don’t get her. She’ll be a pain in the ass, I bet.”
They shared a laugh and another high five. Ryu Jun Yeol might be a burden to everyone but not to his team. He cares for them and never leaves everyone behind, as long as that person can catch up to him. That is why he hates working with a female police. He thinks that they are too slow and emotional, and that would be the last thing he needs in his line of work. He wants a subordinate that will always be up for anything – like him.
“Is that why you came here today even if you are off duty, Sunbae? You want to see the newbie?”
“Yes. I want to assess the newbie before we get back to work tomorrow. I hope he arrives soon.”
And as if the high heavens heard him, his superior walked up to both of them. Behind his superior are the newbies – one man and a woman. The latter looks awkwardly uncomfortable, though.
“Ryu Jun Yeol-ssi.”
“Ne, Chief!”
“You made quite a commotion here again today, huh?”
“Just doing my job, Chief.”
“Very well then, the transfers arrived today. If you have time, I would like to introduce them to you.”
“Sure. I am actually waiting for them to arrive.”
“Great. Here are they are.”
The newbies stood on the Chief’s left side and he’s still weirdly distracted with the girl newbie who’s wearing white sneakers, dark pants and a plaid shirt over a plain v-neck black shirt.
“This is Jun Min Goo and he is from Daegu and he’s been with Daegu Department for 5 years. And this young lady right here is Lee Hyeri from Gwangju Police Department. She is a junior.
They exchanged greetings and shook each other’s hands before the Chief continued with the introduction.
“One of them will be on your team, Ryu Jun Yeol-ssi.”
“I understand, Chief. Welcome to our team, Jun Min – “
But Chief cut him off when he was about to face Jun Min Goo.
“Lee Hyeri, Mr. Ryu here will be your team leader. Jun Yeol-ssi, Lee Hyeri will be the new member of your team.”
He was caught off guard and didn’t know how to react.
He will have a woman on his team.
A woman. A newbie.
Oh crap.
