HISTOIRE: à l’époque de sa fondation, provincetown n’avait qu’une simple milice mise à disposition afin d’assurer la protection de ses habitants. la police municipale comme on la connaît aujourd’hui a vu le jour à la fin des années 1800, afin de renforcer le contrôle de l’autorité. mais depuis le début du nouveau siècle, le PTPD semble avoir perdu le contrôle face aux institutions belliqueuses, prenant de plus en plus d’ampleur: le crime n’a pour ainsi dire, jamais été aussi présent dans les rues. toutefois, leur mandat le plus important est d'assurer la protection des touristes face au danger que représente le secret des habitants de la ville.

Les Institutions d'Ombreval

L'Académie des Ombres

Perchée sur une colline escarpée, l'Académie des Ombres se dresse avec une aura mystique, presque intimidante. Ses tours gothiques s'élèvent vers le ciel, ornées de gargouilles qui semblent veiller silencieusement sur les secrets qu'abrite l'école. À première vue, elle ressemble à un château médiéval, mais les observateurs avertis notent rapidement des détails anachroniques et des symboles mystérieux gravés dans la pierre.

L'intérieur de l'académie est un labyrinthe de couloirs sombres, éclairés par des chandeliers tremblotants. Les salles de classe sont remplies d'artefacts anciens, de grimoires poussiéreux et d'instruments magiques. Les professeurs, vêtus de robes sombres, enseignent des matières allant de la divination à la métamorphose, et chaque cours semble être une plongée dans l'inconnu.

La bibliothèque d'Ombreval

La Bibliothèque d'Ombreval se tient comme un gardien imposant du savoir occulte au cœur de la ville. Certains racontent qu'il est le gardien de la Bibliothèque depuis des temps immémoriaux, détenant des secrets aussi anciens que la ville elle-même.

Les rumeurs prétendent que, au fond de la bibliothèque, se trouve une salle secrète contenant des tomes interdits, des artefacts maudits et des connaissances interdites. Seuls quelques initiés ont eu la chance (ou l'infortune) d'y accéder, et ceux qui en sont revenus ont été transformés à jamais par ce qu'ils ont découvert dans l'obscurité de cette salle clandestine.

They asked me to tell you what it was like to be a pregnant girl—we weren't "women" then—a pregnant college girl who, if her college found out she was pregnant, would expel her, there and then, without plea or recourse. What it was like, if you were planning to go to graduate school and get a degree and earn a living so you could support yourself and do the work you loved—what it was like to be a senior at Radcliffe and pregnant and if you bore this child, this child which the law demanded you bear and would then call "unlawful," "illegitimate," this child whose father denied it, this child which would take from you your capacity to support yourself and do the work you knew it was your gift and your responsibility to do: What was it like? I can hardly imagine what it's like to live as a woman under Fundamentalist Islamic law. hypothetical struggle between Christianity and paganism in bbc merlin? 👀 one that's very neurodivergent? 👀 do tell

Okay, so Athurian times take place in the early dark ages. Which was probably a weird time for religion in Britain. Because the Roman occupation had just come to an end, leaving behind the structure of catholicism at least with those in positions of power. But religious beliefs were still in the process of blending together with the local practices and other religions, leading to some odd gnostic beliefs. Obviously, bbc merlin doesn't talk about Christianity within Camelot but I think we can assume the catholic church would have a position at the round table. Presumably, Arthur would grow up instructed in catholic belief, go to mass, and have bishops or whatever advising him. He would rule by Devine right, sanctioned by the pope and magic would be characterized as demonic. And that somehow raises the stakes for me, imaging magical merlin within the walls of a very catholic Camelot.

I just have this image of merlin in the back of a cathedral as Arthur attends mass. Kneeling in this beautiful building, head bowed low as the congregation sings praise to a foreign God in a foreign tongue. A God that would apparently have merlin tied to a stake and burned alive. And merlin choking out his empty prayers, echoing in the verbal praise under the isolation of his nonbelief and magical association. Full of fear and venom.

The hypothetical struggle I imagine is one of catholic enforcement pushed by Arthur's religious advisors and Arthur's morality. Because Arthur is a good person and slaughtering a people on the basis religion is insane. So, what does it mean for Arthur if he stops listening to his advisors and starts accepting magic? He has to contend with a spiritual struggle, not just the secular issues presented in the show. And I would looooooove to watch that. The bending of Arthur's beliefs into something more flexible and less rigidly Christian according to the church of the time

While Audouard used an exaggeratedly ameliorated version of slavery to underscore married women’s subjugation under French law, Léonie Rouzade, writing at the same time, created a fictional utopian tale to similarly attack the Napoleonic Code. In her 1872 Le monde renversé, Rouzade envisioned a beautiful slave, a young white French woman named Célestine Chopin, taken captive by pirates at sea and subsequently sold to a sultan. Célestine ultimately seizes control over the sultan’s kingdom. Once in power, she inverts the laws governing women and men. Uproar and confusion ensue. Men express indignation and disbelief at the subservience and subjugation of their new position, and women voice stunned recognition of their suddenly acquired power and status. While the code’s differential treatment of men and women surprised few, placing women under formerly male law and vice-versa illuminated the deep injustices inherent in France’s profoundly gendered legal code.[59] Célestine’s decree specifically inverts the Napoleonic Code’s spousal mandate by stating, “Man owes obedience to woman.”[60] On acceding to the throne, the new empress immediately performs a mass wedding. Here Rouzade cuts to the code’s patriarchal core. Célestine declares the usual marital vows irrelevant, because “their entire value could be summarized in the word ‘obedience.’” The traditional nuptial pledge was thus replaced with an oath of obedience “of the man to his wife.”[61] As the story develops, the men and some women of the former sultanate express frustration with men’s severe subjugation and the problems created by such obvious inequity.[62] Asked to “establish a balance” between men and women, Célestine replies by clarifying that she had merely, “inverted the roles, but had changed absolutely nothing” about the gendered laws. “I understand very well, gentlemen,” she explains, “that women’s role does not suit you, because it does not at all suit women either.”[63]
