I was writing a Les Mis retelling in a high fantasy world where there are some differences, some characters are POC or women for example. Marius is a girl, and he and Cosette are a lesbian couple. Enjoltaire would have a happy ending and be canon. The high fantasy world features a competition like Lightlark's but it's more similar to The Mirror Visitor (French book where magic really has no bounds, everything can happen, and the world is divided in different realms).
Being a retelling the characters can be very different, like there will be odd pairings other than the main ones. But I will include all of the Amis for example and we'll have a happy ending Eponine and an older Gavroche. Would anyone be interested in reading it? Because I could also post it in ao3 and use the real names of the novel.

So, hypothetically, what would you all say if I were to say that I’m writing a story about the July Revolution of 1830 and the formation of Les Amis?

Javert fans, don't bite me for this, but........
I came across a post on tumblr this evening from a mental health blog and the details of the post got me thinking about Javert, his personality and they way he chose to live his life. As someone who is studying mental health with plans to eventually become a counsellor/psychotherpist I found it interesting and I'm wondering what other Javert lovers think of this idea.
I know Javert is a fictional character but I think this could be an interesting discussion subject. Also it seems less harmful imo to speculate about a fictional character than a real person. Do any of you think it's likely that Javert had Schizoid Personality Disorder?
I'm not sure and haven't researched into whether or not this would have been a thing back in the late 1700's/1800's. I just wanted to ask you guys what you thought of this idea. There was just something in the info about SPD that made sense to me when it comes to Javert and his isolated life away from his work, the fact that he had no real friends, no family and so on.

the fanfics that I resist reading the longest always end of being my faves—
like when I was reading a lot of byler stuff & there was this one fic that shipped Will with some guy named Boris who was from a totally diff thing— a movie? book? The…Goldfinch?
why would I read such a fic?
but finally when I’d read all the other good fics, I was like ehh what the hell—I’ll give Boris a try.
& I ended up getting so invested in the character that I had to read the huge angsty amazing book he came from.
& gosh darn— it just happened again!
I was reading Enjolras/Grantaire fics (Les Mis fandom) & there was this one fic that had a ton of kudos but was a poly ship of my guys plus some dood named Combeferre.
no thanks…
but eventualllyy I was like okayyyy I’ll try. & shiiit it ended up being the most wonderful cozy brilliant fic! & this guy Combeferre! well! I fell so in love I had to go buy Les Misérables (aka “the brick”) to get to know him better ❤️
now, I’m resisting reading a highly rated fic in the Les Mis fandom cuz it’s a Supernatural AU & I’m not super into that buuuuut knowing me, I probably will be :P

I have 23 midterm exams to grade on this blessed Tuesday June 6, so my intended Barricade Day fic will be finished Not Today. this being the case, here are my previous Barricade Day fics for your convenience:
2020: Souviens-Toi De Moi
On the second anniversary of the June Rebellion, Marius feels someone calling him.
2021: Cats Are Nice
The cat is the erratum of the mouse. The mouse, plus the cat, is the proof of creation revised and corrected.
Joly chats a bit with Death about cats and philosophy while they wait for the rest of Les Amis to turn up in the aftermath of the barricade.
2022: Tomorrow, The Future
Combeferre and Prouvaire talk about revolution and civilization on the night before Lamarque's funeral.

you’ll see // wait for me by gracelessbeliever:
The bottle didn't leave his side, nor did his private affections for the man raving before him, some tangent that Grantaire was closely following- his eyes attached to the other's lips, but ears equally attentive to his words.
"That is no world to live in," the man was saying, arms firm against his sides, the stillness containing a power that may have been lost with wild gestures. "to work in a factory- it's a prison. Convicts have lived better lives."
It was true enough, but easier said when you could afford the belief that the world would get better. All Grantaire could afford, he thought to himself, was the comforting, bottomless bottle in his hand.
"I'll drink to that," he said genuinely, raising it up with half a smile, whole in Enjolras' light.
(Les Miserables, 8k, Teen & Up, Inspired by Hadestown, Enjolras/Grantaire, In Progress)

'Purely for shock value' is some of the worst attempts at media criticism stg if les mis came out today people would say javert jumped off the bridge purely for shock value just because you haven't thought about it doesn't mean it has no significance to the story, separating the thing you don't like about it renders its theme incoherent/contrary to the message a character is defined as much by their breaking/turning point as their upward tragectory
Anyway

Me when so many people think Les Misérables is just a dense pretentious brick but it’s actually genuinely the most top tier action/comedy/romance/historical fiction/thriller/mystery/horror/satire ever written full of the silliest most in-depth interesting varied characters ever written and the funniest jokes I’ve ever read and the most profound shit ever written that I think about daily:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I HAVE GIGGLED SO MANY TIMES AT THAT BOOK. OUT OF ALL THE CLASSICS I’VE READ AND REALLY LOVED, ITS THE ONLY ONE THATS BEEN A GENUINE PAGE TURNER FOR ME AND EVERYONE I KNOW THINKS ITS THE MOST PRETENTIOUS ONE AND THINK I’M READING IT JUST TO LOOK ‘SMART’. 😭 YOU DONT HAVE TO TORTURE YOURSELF WITH SUPER COMPLICATED TRANSLATIONS!! ITS OKAY!! YOU CAN READ A SMOOTHER TRANSLATION WITHOUT LOOSING ANYTHING in fact you’ll almost 100% get more out of it, I highly recommend the Julie Rose translation 🙏
Anyway Les Mis fans stop giving every last acre and drop of content to Les Amis THEY’RE FINE. THEY’RE OK. I LIKE THEM WELL ENOUGH. But WHERE is my babygirl Jean Valjean WHERE IS HE. ALSO STOP DRAWING AND PORTRAYING COSETTE AS A SUPER STEREOTYPICAL BLONDE LOVE INTEREST SHE’S WEIRD AND INTERESTING AND HAS A PERSONALITY OF HER OWN AND DRESSES IN ALL BLACK AND SHE’S NOT EVEN BLONDE 😭

I have a lot of respect for the Just Stop Oil protestors who interrupted Les Mis last night. I've done disruptive actions before and it's fucking hard. Any kind of direct action is hard, and anyone who participates in civil disobedience (or uncivil disobedience!) will know that.
But still. It's incredibly disheartening to see the negative responses from people who (presumably, seeing as they either follow the account and/or bought tickets to the show) are fans of Les Mis.
And like, I don't know, it's just making me reflect a lot on how popularised versions of Les Mis (mainly the musical) still fail to get through to people. It doesn't hammer home the message in the book's prologue, it's too easy for people to see it as that was then and this is now, that was over there and this is here, etc, etc. Like... I can't stop thinking about how quickly the protestors were thrown under the bus by both the audience and the theatre. How it's easy for people to exercise hypothetical solidarity towards a bunch of fictional characters yet not extend that to real life contexts. How everyone will unanimously agree that the National Guard are the bad guys and then turn around and cheer on the IRL cops for removing protestors. I don't know.
And I've been to productions of Les Mis before where people will cry during the barricade sequence or comment on how upsetting Fantine's story is and then come out of the theatre and walk straight past the unhoused people on the streets. It's not new. But it is particularly jarring when as soon as the lights come up people seem to forget how fervently they hoped that things would be different, and not realise they have to play a part in that change in order for that to happen. Like, the message of Les Mis is supposed to be if you do nothing, nothing will change.
The amount of people who don't seem to grasp that Les Mis condemns people exactly like them, who stood by, who turned away from the people trying to change things, it's just... It's so fucking frustrating.
