I just ordered a bunch of pieces parts that I'm gonna turn into a computer.
I've built systems before, like eh 15 years ago or more, and I cannot overstate how delightful it is that the persistence of modularity means that while the system I'm building now will be functionally the equivalent of dozens of times the power of the computer I built then, the bones of it are all pretty similar.
Motherboard. Cpu. Cooler. Power supply. RAM. Storage. Case. Fans. Graphics card. Operating system. Monitor.
Now some things have changed. You can now buy literally everything with vivid rainbow lights, and for a few minutes I stared at the pretty modern cases with their windows and rave -like interiors, and dreamed of the gayest computer on the planet.
Then I remembered that I'm a photophobic mushroom who computers in a darkened room and hates bright high contrast lighting and spent more dollars to get a case without a window.
Also, water cooling terrifies me. Not because the idea is unsound but because while I'm confident in my ability to insert tab a into slot b to assemble a computer by going slowly and following instructions, the very notion of me handling liquids around electronic components sounds inherently fraught.
So I did not go with components which require such things.
Infodumping below the cut.
(for the curious: fractal design define r5 case, msi pro z790-p WiFi ddr4 mobo, i5136000kf (14 core), 64gb ddr4 RAM, radeon rx6800 16gb, deepcool ak400 zero dark plus cooler, 4x 140mm case fans, Corsair 850w modular platinum ps, 1 tb ssd for the os and a 2tb ssd for the games, both pcie4x4 nvme, and a curved 27 inch 2k monitor. This is upgrading from a 2015 laptop which is still very robust with an i76700 quad core processor, 16gb RAM, 1tb ssd and a gtx950m 4gb graphics card which just this year stopped meeting minimum specs for the games I want to play. I figure the new system could last me another 8-10 years.)
Is 64 gb of ram overkill? Hahahaha yes. But it's about a hundred bucks. Is 3tb overkill? No but it's also about 120 bucks. Do I need a 27 inch monitor? Mayyyybe but it's $200. The real splurge is the video card and CPU, but I'm not going to regret those at all when I'm playing starfield and bg3.
(I'm also going to play every game I've been playing at low settings on ultra just because I can. Subnautica is gonna be so pretty.)
Interestingly, the parts come with three games, including the one I initially decided to build a system for (starfield). The processor comes with assassin's creed mirage and something I didn't recognize. Going with Intel for the processor and AMD for the GPU ended up being very much in my favor that way as if I'd gone ryzen, I'd have ended up with two copies of starfield.
I think the last time I built a system from scratch it had 4-8 gigs of RAM and a 2gb video card and maybe a dual core cpu maybe not. I've done some bare bones systems since then and a lot of upgrades, but not from-the-ground-up.
Amusingly, while doing this, I thought I was going to hand my laptop down to my son. Then I realized that in a pandemic fugue state in 2021 I bought him and my husband computers with part of the stimulus that were basically maxed out refurb systems that somehow are running 32g of RAM each and the only real weakness in their systems are graphics, which hubby doesn't use and which can be easily upgraded for my son for like <$150 to double his vram.
I have minimal memory of buying these systems but it makes sense for how little they complain about them. (old Dell optiplex systems. I think I spent 400 on each of them at the time. With upgrades.)
So since I've been hyperfixated on this process I've been watching a lot of pc building YouTube and it's been very helpful but also very popcorn. So much drama. Le gasp.
My one regret about not getting a flash light up system with lots of rgb is that it would impress the hell out of my 11 year old but I seriously can't deal with that much light up distraction and the extra cost for the components has been spent on a better GPU.
Anyway this is all going to be much cheaper than trying to find a system with equivalent stats prebuilt, and it's been a while since that was true when I was in the market for a computer.

okay so. tart and estinien. at first their relationship was very normal, in hvw she agreed w estinien's pov on the dragonsong war but decided to put alphinaud at first priority, so they still got along well even w different goals. then in stb when tart's mental state spiraled after zenos' death, it was estinien (and aymeric) that snapped her out of it by rescuing her from elidizenos. so all in all they were friends even if they didn't interact much, and tart was very grateful to estinien for saving her.
now. keep in mind that i watched edw before the end of shb. so i saw that early edw there are things that make the wol as a role less exclusive, right. id heard of the tempering cure, then vrtra gave his scales to protect people from tempering entirely. so the way the wol's role has been defined as the only one who can withstand tempering, that's gone now. okay. so then i got to finish shb, then 5.4 onwards, when estinien started to join the scions. despite them only sharing a couple scenes i think estinien and krile have chemistry, alphinaud clearly adores estinien too, and g'raha idolizes him. right then an evil thought formed in my mind.
i wonder how tart would react to this? tart who defines herself by being the wol and is desperate to belong. who is seeing someone join her group and being welcomed by everyone. someone who is nearly her equal at her most valuable skill. and tart's advantages over him are slowly being eroded, while her detriments are only increasing. oh, tart fucking hates estinien.
it starts as petty jealousy over her favorite people liking estinien so much. then she becomes passive-aggressive at him. estinien thinks it's kinda funny, the hostility just bounces off him. but by the time they reach thavnair, tart snaps at him for the hairtie incident and estinien's like :/ wow ok and avoids interacting w tart more than necessary. he stays away until fandaniel's funny prank.
we all know in from the cold. best part of edw. the aftermath is lacking, though--right now tart has had all her wol privileges stripped from her, while her being targeted specifically by zenos is becoming a huge liability. just look at the mess fandaniel created... tart panics and runs away from camp broken glass.
the scions are alarmed bc what do you mean the wol is missing AGAIN, estinien volunteers to look for tart while everyone else prepares to storm the tower of babil. he finds her easily w the dragoon jumps, and
by the way, you know what stuck out to me when i played this section of edw? before setting out on the previous mission lucia told the wol that hot soup will be waiting for them when they get back. then we got the scene where jullus eats soup and cries about it, then like a glimpse of the wol before they got kidnapped by fandaniel. we never got to eat the soup guys. we never got the soup!!!
so tart never got the soup. she's starving and cold and in pain and has just had the worst dysphoria experience of all time earlier that day and now here stands the motherfucker, the guy poised to take her place as savior of the star effortlessly, confronting her when she's alone and weak. ohhhh it's so obvious what he's doing here. estinien is going to kill her. well not if he dies first
for years since learning the discipline of the warrior tart never let the inner beast take control until right then. she goes berserk and attacks estinien. who is just like, standing there, and suddenly the wol goes stark raving mad and tries to kill him. fortunately for tart he isn't insane, and it's easy to kick the ass of a tank who is at 25% hp and not using any mits or self-heals. so tart gets beaten handily
estinien lets her lay still in the snow for a bit, then sighs. "aibou, sound off if you aren't dead"
and the sound he hears is wailing sobs. bc its over. if the scions didn't intend to get rid of tart before, they surely do now that she's attacked one of their own. estinien picks her up to bring back to camp and tart struggles and begs to be left alone, until he shuts her up by grabbing her tail. tart gets quiet and lets him carry her like a sack of flour after that.
estinien deflects the scions' questions and dumps tart in a room to eat and get checked out by a chirurgeon. he stays to watch that she doesn't run off again. before he leaves, though, tart calls out to him, "i'm sorry."
"i tried to kill you, you tried to kill me. we're even."
"i'm sorry. i've been such a jerk."
"yeah, i really thought we were friends."
"i'm so sorry."
"hmph. get some sleep while you can. we're leaving soon."
and so things end in a.. clean slate. ish. tart treats him better from then on and estinien decides he does like friendship after all. their relationship recovers enough that by the end of edw estinien is the one tart asks to please carry her like a princess off the ragnarok bc she doesn't feel like walking* and he does carry her nicely this time www
and then in 6.1 they're back to teasing each other again! with friendly hostility this time! tart makes fun of estinien for getting ripped off again, then when finding out it's on purpose she's like "what you think that's cool or something? you think that makes you sooo cool? cause it doesn't and you're lame as hell estinien" (says this while doing the /wow emote bc she does find him so cool for this) and then estinien rolls his eyes bc "i told you to bring one guy and you brought four"
"that's 'cause i'm more popular than you! AHAHAHAHA"
"that's not even funny that's just true"
"AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"
they're best friends. they're my favorite. i love when i can make tart blow up at someone and make up w them bc without fail that becomes her strongest relationship. tart and estinien are truly aibous now i'm so proud of them

2 Unlimited - "Twilight Zone (Rap Version)" 1992 Belgian Techno / Eurohouse
I think this second single from über-popular Belgian-Dutch dance project 2 Unlimited was the one that really started to solidify them as a big techno-rave act, because while "Get Ready for This" was also certainly a rave tune, its sound was a lot tamer and less imposing than a bunch of the 2 Unlimited singles that would follow it. And had the group's producers, Phil Wilde and Jean-Paul De Coster, kept recycling that same string sound from "Get Ready for This" in their ensuing singles, they probably would've just been remembered as a fun novelty act that had once caught lightning in a bottle back in 1991.
But for 2 Unlimited's next attempt, out went those catchy strings that had landed them their first hit, and in came a sound that was much more intense, with a loud and super sharp, metallically stabbing, timpani-type melody to lead the way, made to be cranked at the highest of volumes during the peak moments at the largest and dumbest of Euro-raves. A one-hit wonder this group most certainly would not become; "Twilight Zone" would go on to hit the top ten in many different European countries, including #1 in both Finland and the Netherlands, and #2 in the UK as well. And it would peak at #49 on the US' Billboard Hot 100 too, remaining on that chart for a total of 20 weeks, and marking the last time that they would actually touch it, despite the fact that the song would manage to stay in constant rotation at sporting events and still does to this very day.
However, while the silly lead riff from "Twilight Zone" is undoubtedly iconic, Wilde and De Coster definitely didn't come up with the whole thing themselves. Have a listen to the intro from this very popular 1985 synthpop tune by German act Sandra, called "(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena," that was a #3 song in Belgium and #1 in the Netherlands:
youtube
Pretty clearly served as an inspiration, right? Not only is the sound of the synth itself very similar, but a sped-up version of the melody that was formed by that synth went on to become directly incorporated into 2 Unlimited's own riff too. So, there's really no question that "Twilight Zone," as we know it, would have never actually existed without this Sandra song here. And it's ultimately up to you to decide whether or not that would've actually been a good or bad thing 😅.
And the famous shouts of "woo!" that also accompany that big, stupid melody? That's from the a cappella version of this 1986 post-disco-gospel tune by Tramaine, called "In the Morning Time." Fast-forward to around the five-minute mark and you'll hear that yelp nestled in there!
youtube
Now, in regards to the music video, while it's a fun watch, I think that it might be one of 2 Unlimited's weakest entries, overall, simply for the fact that it's basically just a rehash of their first one. And if rapper Ray Slijngaard and singer Anita Doth were truly taking us all to the "Twilight Zone" with it, well, then, some of the biggest differences between this and the video for "Get Ready for This" would appear to be that Anita's big, black, leather hat is now cocked back to the side, and Ray's replaced his weird, black visor that had a silver LA Kings logo on it with a weird, black visor that now has a silver LA Raiders logo on it instead! How eerie!
But also, even though the Kings hat was gone, 2 Unlimited's appeal to the NHL to get them to blast the group's made-for-arena music throughout their own cavernous venues appeared to now actually be far more overt, because Ray was also now rocking a Kings hoodie too, and it happened to have a much larger team logo on it than the hat did. And not only did the Kings have super cool merch, but the team itself was also a big deal, as they were perennially making the playoffs back then, and had maybe the greatest hockey player of all time, Wayne Gretzky, on their roster too. Plus, Ray's appeal clearly worked, since you're still pretty much guaranteed to hear at least one 2 Unlimited song if you go out to an NHL game, three decades after they had originally released their biggest US songs.
So, while they may have made some of the gaudiest rave anthems in history, this second single from 2 Unlimited appears to have served as a stepping stone towards their eventual pinnacle, "No Limit," which was both the most successful and also maybe most ridiculous hit that they'd ever release. The types of enormous and pounding lead melodies that both those songs shared may not have ended up appealing as much to Americans outside of the sports venues, but plenty of people elsewhere—grown adults, even—seemed to really go nuts for them.
And if you really wanna have some dumb DJ fun, line up "(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena," followed by "Twilight Zone," and then cap off your run with the "Mortal Kombat Theme" 😎.
Whoo!
More fun videos here.

271 - Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Patreon Selects)
Tumblr media
Our Patreon Selects episodes continue this week with a pick from Audrey: the beloved 2019 lesbian romance Portrait of a Lady on Fire. The film launched at the Cannes Film Festival, winning the Best Screenplay prize and skyrocketing director Céline Sciamma to the names of most beloved contemporary directors. However, when the Oscar race began, France instead chose to submit Ladj Ly's Les Misérables for the International Feature race. Sciamma's film still gained feverish fandom on the fall festival circuit and even more critical raves, but ultimately distributor Neon focused its awards campaign energies on fanning the flames of the Parasite moment.
This episode, we talk about the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and Portrait's delayed platform release that got abbreviated by COVID. We also discuss Adèle Haenel's stunning enigmatic performance, the film where Noémie Merlant falls in love with a circus ride, and the case for Claire Mathon in Best Cinematography.
Topics also include Louis Ironson's poster's disease, 2019 films directed by women, and the 2022 Sight and Sound poll.

Strange First Impressions
This is part of the Band!HoW AoA AU
Band AU Darrell - @bluecoolr-main
Band AU Ava - @slaasherslut
Band AU Percy (Bunny) and Licorice - me!
All other characters are HoW Cannon.
Tumblr media
The Fallen Angels finally decided to go on tour again, this time with Bunny, their shy new Bassist/co-lyricist and her emotional support dog, Licorice. The tour bus hadn't officially gotten on the road as according to their manager they were going to be sharing a Bus with Darrell Todd and his band. Darrell was an old friend of the Angels who were more than happy to see him again. Bunny immediately made herself scarce in her bunk not wanting to embarrass herself in front of her bandmates. An upside to being so small compared to everyone else was the fact that slipping away out of uncomfortable situations was a breeze! Or, so Bunny thought. Lester had caught her shimmying herself into the top bunk.
"Darlin'? Whatcha doin up there?"
"Hiding."
Lester was kind, gentle, Ava's boyfriend and the bands Drummer.
He treated Bunny like a friend instead of a stranger. He knew this would happen, the black haired girl wasn't very excitable about strangers. She had never met Darrell before.
Lester chuckled. "You'll like 'im, promise. Besides we are gonna be tourin' for a few weeks. There ain't no conceivable way ta avoid 'im…"
Bunny laid her head down on the mattress as she had successfully gotten up to the top bunk. "I know…I'm just not in the mood to greet people, okay? Can you hand me Licorice? I'm gonna lay down for a nap…"
Les understood, handing the fluffy Pomeranian up to his owner and the curtain being shut.
A few minutes later the sound of bootsteps were heard and commotion from the band was made.
"It's about time you got here! What, your old truck crap out on you again?" Lester inquired of the blonde.
"Traffic actually. Heard you bunch got a new member?"
"She's nappin' right now." Lester smiled and lowered his voice. "Poor thing is shy as the Dickens so, if she don't approach you immediately, don't take it to heart." Darrell was gently patted on the back and let go to find his Bunk and set his gear down..
The tour bus took off with it's passengers and the Band minus Bunny sat around catching up with Darrell and how he had been for a few hours. "You trying to copy me?" Bo joked with him about being a fellow slut and Darrell blushed. "You know what they say, imitation is the sincerest form a' flattery. I can't help myself some days."
A groggy moan was heard and Bunny stood in the doorway. She rubbed her eyes with a fist and yawned.
Darrell could barely see under the hood of the jacket the girl was wearing, definitely something mysterious about her.
"Have a nice nap, sweetpea?" Lester asked as the girl looked up. Darrell this time could get a better look at her. Half lidded Blue eyes, the most adorable cheeks and long rave hair framed her face. The girl nodded mutely and opened the mini fridge for a Mtn Dew, cracking it open.
"Bun, this is Darrell." Ava introduced her. Bunny was given a smile, he was certainly very charming. Green Tshirt stretched taut against his pecs, blue jeans and cowboy boots. "y'know I didn't know the Sinclair's had a baby sister. And one that obviously looks up to one twin more than the other..." Darrell joked. Vincent shrugged with a smirk, passing by the girl and pulling back her hood, patting her head. "Yeah yeah..go call your girlfriend Vin..." Bo rolled his eyes, chewing on the lolipops stash that Bunny had brought with her.
As Darrell went for a handshake, Bunny picked up Licorice and oddly looked for any signs of growling or barking from the fluff ball and there was nothing but panting.
The southerner chuckled, playing along and shaking the dogs paw. "Nice ta meet you too.."
"Would…you like to hold him? He…seems to think you're an okay person…." She trailed off and Darrell agreed. "What's his name?"
"L…Licorice….his name is Licorice, Lord of the damned."
Darrell held the pom close, gently scratching him behind the ears. "Dogs are good judges a' character. Yeah that's right bud, I ain't so bad…" Bunny sat down next to Ava who patted her knee in silent praise of trying to talk to people.
This was possibly a friendship?
Bunny has no way of knowing. She could only go up from here.

anyone seen the London production of Neil Gaimans ‘Ocean at the End of the Lane’? Fell in love with the book recently and would love someone’s take on the loud sounds listed in the warnings of the show?
I have bad tinnitus (am autistic too but honestly the ears are more relevant aha) and am at a place where I can see most things with earplugs. I’ve seen Cabaret, Newsies, Frozen, Crucible and all manner of plays but avoided (sadly) Les Mis, Hamilton and any plays with artillery fire warnings. I’ve asked the theatre as I typically do but they’re unable to give additional context as of right now.
I was just wondering if anyone has any context for how loud the ‘loud sounds’ are in the show. I know it’s hard to explain but, as it’s often, a precautionary warning but don’t an to get caught out. Like is it 1 loud bang, a rave, consistent noticeable loudness?
This is the longest long shot that the right eyes will get on this but 75% of the time when I ask here the universe delivers.

This week’s AM features a few happy returns, with new music from AM favourites Nabihah Iqbal, Mega Bog, and Benoit Pioulard (to name a few). Plus a throwback to classic mid-2000s chamber pop, violins played in the LA river, a David Axelrod track that’s technically credited to someone else, Morabeza Tobacco getting as close to the "Good Times" bassline as is legally allowed, and a healthy mix of atmospheric sounds, post-punk raves, experimental compositions and other offbeat easy listening for a Monday morning.

10,000 gecs - 100 gecs
Tumblr media
10,000 gecs isn’t a perfect album, but it may be the ideal summer record.
That may be a strange declarative statement to start on, after all I’m reviewing the newest batch of tunes by snickering Hyperpop hooligans Lauren Les and Dylan Brady, who seem to not care at all what you think about them (or care deeply that you don’t think that they care what you think of them).
But this album feels like Summer, or it at least sounds sunny. For as manic and colorful as hyperpop music has sounded for its first few years of existence, sonically a hyperpop album has never sounded this sunny.  Compare this with Brakence’s moody and self obsessed Hypochondriac last year, which seems to brilliantly evoke Autumn, or WhoKilledXIX’s misanthropic and boastful 19.  Even Food House’s debut, as much as I love love LOVE the production on that album, sounds like colorful and happy music you’d blast at in indoor rave in a cold, dystopian hellscape. The same way 90s techno was an escape for the queer clubbing scene from the masses but applied in a post Covid, terminally online world, Food House captures the storm before the calm.
The new attitude on 100 gecs latest release is just screaming “we don’t care.” The infusions of ska, hip hop, nu metal and bedroom pop are balmy and refreshing, and never feel pigeonholed by the hyperpop genre label floating over the duo’s head(s) since 2019.
In fact, this album branches far away from hyperpop at times.  I Got My Tooth Removed is a straight up ska song, no punches pulled and no apologies made.  The humor comes from the song itself, a funny melodramatic ballad about losing a tooth like a lover with all emotion snapped out of it under the weight of a heavy handed, ska laden chorus.
The Most Wanted Person in the United States is another hilarious song, Laura Les doing her best Kreayshawn impression with a bright and choppy rap verse.  The instrumental uses a glut of sound effects in a manner reminiscent of Aphex Twin’s Logan Rock Witch, utilizing a walky talky sound and a sample from “Insane in the Membrane” in lieu of the sounds of toys.  But also what might be the sounds of toys. It’s pretty crazy.
The punches don’t stop coming for the fans of the original hyperpop “gecs,” as 757 might be one of the bands punchiest songs to date. I heard a leak of this song from concert footage, and got to see the band play this song at Outside Lands last year, but to my surprise the vocals sound even wetter and more reverb boosted on the album.  This might be one of my few nitpicks, but some of the EQ-ing choices make the vocals sound washed out (even for 100 gec standards) and contrasts with cleaner vocals at various points in the album. However, this doesn’t ruin what is, at the core, one of my favorite 100 gecs tracks from a song and lyric writing standpoint.
The only song I didn’t really fall head over heels for was Billy Knows Jamie, which doesn’t seem to know how to get out of first gear.  The loud breakdown truncating the song at the end is interesting, but doesn’t seem to build off of anything preceding it and makes the song feel incomplete and a bit underdeveloped.  As a whole the song is still a cool Limp Bizkit pastiche, just doesn’t meet the high bar the group has set for themselves.
Overall, if your looking to get into 100 gecs without the proper background this album is a great introduction. In fact it might be a better introduction than their last studio record, as there’s no obvious filler like I Need Help Immediately or gecgecgec to pad out the runtime.  This album is a lean 27 minutes to be blasted by the brave, fun loving and adventurous.  All killer, no filler.
Highlights:  Dumbest Girl Alive, 757, Hollywood Baby, Most Wanted Person in the United States, I Got My Tooth Removed

The European project Stronger Peripheries came to an end with the open rehearsal on Friday 6 September and the Mondaino Plays in Europe party the following day.
After having worked for the first time in Mondaino with his performers for a few days, Hamdi Dridi presented the first half-hour of his Dan(s)e House trio and constellations, which is inspired by the movements of the kitchen and contrasts them with artistic movements. The choreographer, who is also influenced by the communities he traverses in his search for simple, repeated gestures, created with Ewa BIelak, Débora N'jiokou and Lucia Oliveira a score in which the most everyday gestures, linked to the world of cooking, mingle with Hip Hop and the traditional dances of the dancers' countries of origin. Pop and rock atmospheres bathed in red and blue thicken amidst the strong and unmistakable smells of the kitchen in full activity that is hosted on stage: there are three tables with lit fires and steaming pots, ovens and DJ plates. The three performers move in this space, tuning their movements from time to time to the rhythms of the kitchen or to the call of traditional music, shaking their bodies as if during a rave party. Amidst the sounds and noises of boiling pots, most often mixed with techno, Hamdi's choreography allows everyday gestures to turn into dance.
Friday evening opened with the inauguration of Mirco lorenzi's exhibition Alberi (Trees), which will remain open until the end of the year, and closed with a banquet opened by the food prepared by the artists during their work on stage.

Tecwaa is the solo project from York based musician & DJ Paul Fawcett. With broad influences from early nineties Yorkshire raves, Detroit Techno & horror movie scores, the producer delivers with his evocative tracks that hard to pigeonhole late night/early morning sound, upending club dance-floors and sound tracking afterparty sunrises.
With releases on Les Yeux Orange, Futureboogie, Höga Nord Rekords to name a few, he returns to Mireia Records with his first full EP on the label: Life In Sound

Mungo's Hi Fi x Aziza Jaye X Gardna X Eva Lazarus - Born With It
