Regarding the post about your last Madrigals x OC post - how did the Madrigals meet their SO's and why did they end up in a relationship? What made them stick together?

I noticed that Isabela and Luisa date people from each-others friend groups which sound really funny, I need to know how it happened lol

Oh yeah, Dolores really appreciated Isabela doing that 💀. (Isabela didn’t care as much with Luisa).

This is a long post and I was only doing short summaries.

Most of them met in school. It’s a small town, they probably only had the one school - unless you want to be really historically accurate (in which case girls and boys would be separated), then two - either way, they all knew each other early on. There isn’t more than a couple years between them, so even if they weren’t in the same class, they would have seen each other in the playground. Especially given the status of the Madrigals. But, some of them didn’t form proper connections until much later on.

Alfonso & Bruno:

Alfonso and Bruno (and Félix, but this ain’t about him) had been friends throughout their time at school. By the time they finished school (15/16 ish), Bruno realised his feelings weren’t as platonic as they use to be. Probably had many awkward instances of attempting to flirt with him and failing, partially as Alfonso hadn’t realised he was bi yet. Bruno’s reputation slowly began falling away over the next few years, resulting in him distancing himself from his childhood friend; not wanting him to be treated badly by associating with him. Alfonso never really got why - he never saw Bruno as this villain like the rest of the town slowly came to view him as.

Cut to Bruno’s return, he avoided Alfonso as much as he could at the start of Casita’s rebuild. Eventually, he was setup to talk to him by his sisters or by his older nieces - I haven’t quite decided yet, but I could see both of these scenarios working. Regardless, Bruno and Alfonso got to talking and became friends again. By the end of the rebuild, the two were dating. They both are very open with each other and gain a lot of confidence when they are together, which definitely helps them stay together. They bring out the best in each other!

Isabela & Lili:

Isabela has always been aware of Lili, who was Dolores’ childhood best friend (Mariano being Isa’s). Once free from her engagement and embracing her true self, she was quite open that she was a lesbian. And then slowly had to accept what a girl failure she was when it came to her crushes. So she kept quiet about the crush she had gained for Lili. She was locked into further silence when Dolores mentioned to her that Luisa had a crush on Lili and - not wanting to have to relive the whole Mariano thing - kept clear out of the way.

Even long after Luisa had clearly gotten over said crush and mentioned over a hundred times that she had a new crush, who later became her girlfriend, Isabela didn’t dare go after something she wanted herself. If it wasn’t Luisa, there would potentially be someone else she’d hurt. Mariano began to notice her acting odd and asked her what’s wrong, getting her to open up about everything. He assured her as best as he was able and even offered to help Isabela with some of her flirting skills and getting her a chance to speak with Lili away from the public eye.

It was during some town festival that Mariano managed to pull Lili aside from the rest of her and Dolores’ friend group to “meet” Isabela. Isabela still was her girl failure self and gave Mariano more than enough secondhand embarrassment to last the rest of his life, but Lili took it all really well and was extremely flattered. She asked Isabela to dance and that was that. They were found making out in by Dolores (on accident) several hours later.

Dolores was initially not very thrilled about this. Realising with somewhat over exaggerated horror that it meant Isabela would just be around her 24/7 - not only at home, but now she would just be crashing the friend group to hangout with her girlfriend. Though, as Isabela continues to remind her, she is dating Mariano (who is part of Isabela’s friend group), so she doesn’t really have the high ground here of not mixing friend and family.

Luisa & Marta:

Marta is part of Isabela’s friend group but is a much more recent member, she joined sometime in the middle of Casita’s rebuild. Though she spent a decent part of it admiring Luisa, as a lot of the ladies did. As much as Isabela is a huge girl failure, Luisa is a bit of a flirt, charmer, ladies’ woman, whatever you want to call her! Luisa clearly knows she’s a gorgeous and wonderful woman, okay?

After she got over her crush on Lili, Luisa had noticed Marta among her admirers and focused the attention on her. Mutual pinning. She began seeking her out more often, whether she was on a round of chores or just in her own free time. Isabela, as previously stated, was happy enough for Luisa to date her friend and probably was the cost in of this ship - definitely not as a way of learning how to date girls. What? Why would you say that?

Luisa planned a very romantic first date/picnic for them to get to know each other. They now have one of these every couple of weeks. Definitely one of the most chill and least dramatic relationships in the Madrigal family. Oh and yes, Lili has bragged to the Luisa fan club that they are dating.

Camilo & Marco:

They are in the same class at school. Always have been. Became friends very early on. Their families were also very close beforehand, which definitely helped when planning to spend time together outside of school. Their families probably got together every so often anyways. Camilo has been crushing on Marco for at least a good couple of years before he did anything. Definitely wrote things like “C+M 4 EVER” in his diary or on his schoolwork or whatever. Marco had been crushing on Camilo too, but was infinitely more subtle about it.

It during the end of the rebuild before Camilo’s sixteenth birthday that the pair of them both happened to confess their feelings at the same time. It was a little awkward but overall very sweet for a couple of teenagers newly in love. They are still learning and growing as they go, but it’s a journey they’d rather face together.

Mirabel & Sera:

These two got together three years after the miracle returned, when they were roughly 18 and 19.

But, we need to backtrack a little first. By the time they finished school, Sera had been crushing on Mirabel for a while but had been advised by Camilo that it was going to be a hell of a mission - Mira had never dated anyone nor had even the smallest of crushes. There was no way to gage what would be the best thing to try to get her to go on at least one date with Sera.

Sera settled on writing a short love letter/poem, remembering what an avid reader Mirabel had been in school and assumedly still was. Given how often you could spot her with a book in hand. Mirabel corrected the letter of its spelling and grammar, like the smartass she is, and then returned it to Sera. Sera found it endearing and funny, Mirabel was marvelled that someone hadn’t immediately gotten annoyed with her smartass behaviour. Sera accepted that Mirabel just wasn’t interested and offered to be friends instead, to which Mirabel agreed.

(Just to clarify, Sera had a couple of girlfriends during this time. She wasn’t just pining after Mirabel for years).

At 19, Mirabel realised she’d grown incredibly fond of Sera. Even beyond platonic. She was very attached to her “best friend”. And maybe Isabela overheard her confessing this to Luisa and then told Dolores. And maybe Dolores then went on to spread the gossip to Camilo. And maybe Camilo then told Sera. Now knowing Mirabel a lot better, Sera decided to try again. This time with a basket of wool. Mirabel did say yes but asked they take it slowly, as she still didn’t quite understand these “alien” romantic feelings. Sera was happy enough to do so.

Lamya(she/they) is a queer, non-binary, South Asian Muslim, an immigrant first to the Arab world and then again to New York City. If all that sounds like a lot, that's because it is. But she manages to deftly explore these identities, telling the story of her life by relating her experiences back to stories from the Quran and her Islamic upbringing. Whether it's exploring racism through Jinn stories, lesbianism through the character of Maryam, or relating despair over her constant attraction to straight girls to the story of Nuh and his ark, she paints a vivid, authentic picture of her life so far.

I was a little bit nervous going into this because, while I know a little about Islam, I was concerned this book might get too in-depth for me. But I shouldn't have worried at all, because this was written to be very accessible to anyone who's been exposed to the Abrahamic canon. While I often couldn't place a character immediately, as Lamya began to describe their stories I realized that I already knew most of them in broad strokes, even if the details were different. I will say that I'm sure these stories are more a personal interpretation than a scholarly overview. For example, I very much doubt that it's generally accepted among scholars of Islam that Maryam, mother of Isa(Jesus, in Christianity), was a lesbian, or that Allah is explicitly a non-binary being. But it's Lamya's right to seek her own truth in tradition, and I appreciate her sharing that interpretation.

This memoir is, in the grand queer tradition, organized by topic rather than being presented in linear order. She skips forward and backward through the chapters of her life as needed, from her teenage years to college, back to her childhood then ahead to her late 20s, back to college, and so on. I found the ordering to be easy to read, but it's something to be prepared for going in if you're not familiar with this style of memoir.

I feel like I have a hard time relating to people. Like my teen years were “can I go to the movies with my friends” “no” “ok I’ll just spend all my time on this fetish forum” and my childhood was like knowing I was doing something wrong or I was wrong and I’d be like crying all the time at night praying to be allowed to go to purgatory when I die and I was like 8.

All I like to do is talk about anime and music and like there’s not that much more to me. I told my mom I’m probably a lesbian on Sunday and she took it alright. I’m almost 25. I look at m/isa a/mane and realize we’re not so dif. I didn’t like kill anyone but all of my crushes on men were obsessive and life consuming and painful and like I’d feel like such a freak. I 100% allowed myself to be treated like absolute garbage j for some validation and for the security of having a man so I have an excuse to not be with other men and ok I fucked a man a bunch of times and yea ok I was almost blackout for 75% of those times but it’s fine and yea I wonder like how many more times I can do this and I’d be like binging and purging or burning myself or dieting or binge drinking or staying up all night or forcing myself to go to church to get some kind of release from how wrong everything felt all the time. I feel like I’ve lost so many years to like self hatred and desperation to be normal and date a guy and get married and nobody will ask me questions and nobody will say they don’t want me around or that they don’t support my lifestyle or think I’m broken or evil or gross.

I spent like years suppressing my thoughts and feelings like since childhood. I knew like what topics were not ones that should come up in front of mom and dad and my siblings like did not have that experience. I like don’t even know what I like and what I tell myself I like. I spent most of college playing house with the guy I chased down like actual prey and convinced to date me. It’d always be like I can get him to like me and I can make him happy and it was never like he actually makes me happy. I like this. I’m having fun. I feel heard and important and loved. It was just like I can make it work. I spent years being a yandere bitch and it’s like idk what’s even left bc I wasn’t ready to confront it in my teens I just would get blackout drunk and be like good luck future me. And future me is me and idk either. Sometimes I feel like my health has been bad as a direct punishment for all the things I’ve done. And Ik I’m being angsty and delulu but knowing that doesn’t make the feeling stop so it’s like. Idk. But I’m glad I can connect w ppl on here about snz fet and queerness and anime it’s v special to me

In no particular order and hopefully switched up a bit from how I often answer this question:

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield

This book made me CRAZY INSANE clawing the walls. Story of a lesbian marriage that's dissolving after the primary narrator's wife returns from an exploratory submarine mission during which her vessel sank to the bottom of the ocean and stayed there for three months. Told in snippets of the present from one wife and flashbacks of being trapped in the submarine from the other. Just so so so fucking good.

2. Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

Okay, like, obviously all of tumblr has heard about the Locked Tomb series, and I probably wouldn't recommend reading this without reading the first book first, but this book, the second installment, is imo far and away the best. Told in really compelling second-person narration (the reason for which is revealed near the end of the story) with lots of eerie dream logic and also features a sensitive depiction of schizophrenia that's a perfect blend of mundane daily grind after dealing with it for one's whole life and still genuinely frightening for the main character to experience when new symptoms develop. And it's a scary lesbian space opera about imperialism and nuclear war and bone magic. So there's that.

3. Milk Fed by Melissa Broder

This one got really mixed reviews, and I see why, but personally I really enjoyed it — I sat down in a bookstore to skim through it and didn't stand up again until I had read the entire thing, lmao. Bisexual Reform Jewish woman with a severe lifelong eating disorder has a brief and tumultuous affair with a fat Orthodox woman whom she may or may not have willed into existence, which results in her dealing (certainly imperfectly) with her own fucked-up body image through the lens of intense desire for another woman. There are weird Kabbalistic dreams and smatterings of mommy kink throughout.

4. The Immortal King Rao by Vauhini Vara

FREAKISHLY prophetic spec fic by a longtime tech journalist basically asking what would have happened if Apple and Instagram had been invented as a single huge tech conglomerate (called Coconut) by a Dalit immigrant to the United States, King Rao. Narrated by his daughter, Athena, to whom he has left his recorded consciousness after his death. Vara started writing this book in like 2009 and published it in 2022 and it's so insane the shit she predicted. The sections that take place in India are also really good; the author is Dalit and interviewed her family members in India who grew up on coconut farms similar to those featured in the book.

5. Fair Play by Tove Jansson

Really bittersweet, subtle, odd little telling though short story about a pair of middle-aged women artists who have been in love for a long time and live together on a small Scandinavian island in the 1980s. Partially autobiographical and based on the author's romance with Tuulikki Pietilä. I read this a lot when I was first embarking on my relationship with my fiancée back in 2018.

I agree with your post on Isabela, Dolores & Mariano. Why does the fandom think Isabela's lesbian just because she didnt want to marry Mariano? Maybe she didnt want to get married yet. Maybe she wanted to marry someone else. Maybe she didnt want to marry specifically Mariano for some reason. Maybe she suspected Dolores wanted to marry him. There could be 100 reasons why she didnt want to marry him, and being lesbian is only one of them, yet for some reason that's the one everyone has pounced on.

I don't mind if people headcanon her as a lesbian, I guess there are plenty of reasons to see her as such, but since it's not officially canon, I wish there were more fics that explored different routes than just lesbian. I guess aroace Isa is a fun concept to experiment with as well (seen some fics with that). But to me, Isabela will probably remain as a person who just doesn't feel ready to marry and hasn't still found her "the one".

That's kinda off-topic but I've always headcanon Isabela as the one who would marry late in life (late 30s/early 40s) with no children at all or with an only child as a result (and because she's not very maternal - but she'd absolutely be the fun wine aunt tho!). She seems to me like the kind of gal that would like to live her life and fulfil herself first, then possibly "settle down", but in general she strikes me as a free spirit. I'd thought she would eventually, *years* later meet someone who will win her heart and only then would she settle down. It would surely be someone not from Encanto tho, she 100% would fall for an outsider.

Day 14: Legend

Part of my OC-tober 2022 (that will get fucking finished in 2024 so help me god)! I keep changing between Isabel Magbanua and Isabel Makiling but I swear! The official is Isabel Makiling. Magbanua was just Isabel’s last name in first drafts, so I got unconsciously attached. Uh. Anyway. Have some Lesbian heavy petting.

“In the province of Laguna, there is a mountain in the shape of a woman,” Isabel tells her, one night, her cheek against Margie’s bare chest, her thigh between Margie’s legs, all under the pretense of washing themselves of the day’s grime in a nearby stream. The water has long since carried the dirt and blood away, and now they’re just luxuriating in the cool shallows, warmed significantly by the heat of each other. “They say the mountain is guarded by a spirit—she used to be a goddess, before the Spaniards came. Dayang Makiling is what her people call her. The mountain is her domain, a reflection of her. From the right angle, you can see her body, laid upon her side.”

Her fingers, delicately tracing patterns along Margie’s skin, travel south. Goosebumps rise to meet it.

“The ground rises at her knees,” Isabel says, wandering hand disappearing under the surface of the water to caress the sensitive backs of Margie’s knee. Her body jumps in tandem to it, like a marionette come to life, at the call of her puppeteer. Or guitar strings, vibrating under the musician’s skillful touch. Singing, like Margie sings now, gasping as Isabel drags her hand up, up, up—

“Then, the slope forms her thighs,” Isabel says, fingers on Margie's inner thigh, so close. So dangerously close—

So suddenly gone. Margie whimpers, pathetically, at the loss of contact, but is not disappointed for long, as the leg that she had forgotten about, shifts, until Isa’s thigh is pressed flush to the heat of her. Margie grinds down against it, desperately, whimpers turning into whines, uninhibited. Unashamed. Even when Isa laughs at her desperation. Even when her hand still ventures up, up, up, over the soft rolls of fat around Margie’s waist, stopping to pinch and feel and sink into the meat of it. Isabel has stopped talking for the time being, so focused is she on the twists and turns of Margie’s face, dark brown eyes nearly black with want. Margie can hardly look at her when she is like this, but forces herself to, begging without words for more.

“Then, her breasts,” says the girl, as her fingers catch on the swell of Margie’s chest. “Ample. They form twin peaks, near the end. If you look closely, you might even see—”

She pinches a nipple between two fingers. Gives it a rough tug.

“Isa,” Margie whimpers, finally finding her voice and her strength. With a quick maneuver, she flips them over, pining Isabel against the bank with a frustrated groan. “Fuckin’ hell, Isa.”

With a flick of their hips, their cores slot together in hot, sparking bliss. Bodies cradling each other so close, not even water can come between them.

"Dayang Makiling," Margie says, with her atrocious accent. Still, Isabel shivers in anticipation, their twin breaths lost in the space between their lips, mouths hanging open in a brief pause. "Isabel."

Isabel grins up at her, long, thick hair a halo of black floating around her pretty head, the rest of her barely shrouded in a liquid tapestry of moon silver. Beautiful. Regal. Just like how Margie had begun to imagine it, soaring through the clouds and looking down upon a mountain, its Lady on her back, smiling at the sky.

Note: Though the folk lore of Maria/Dayan Makiling is location specific to the province of Laguna, Philippines, this story itself doesn’t really take place in Laguna, but instead in Bulacan, which is in the North. Isabel’s family is from Laguna, and moved to Manila before the siege, and that’s why she’s familiar with the story of Mt. Makiling.
