After years of waiting, I FINALLY get to play my long-running main character in a long-form campaign, so one final redesign was warranted! We're going into Storm King's Thunder with the intent of branching out from there, and I can't wait to see where his story goes.

@viilein sent: his hand reached out. but then vespin thought better than to grab a paladin in his sleep. instead he took his staff and knocked it against the face of hymnal's shield. “you were crying out in your sleep.” he explained once the tiefling woke from the cluttering noise. “what terror do you dream of? … do you think it will follow you past the gate of mount celestia?”

nightmares are rare for him these days. once he had become champion, his dreams had become a showing of what awaited him one day when he stepped past the gates of the material plane. the mountains of celestia were higher than any peak that lived on the face of exandria, and he would yet see the peaks of them only when he finally crossed over.

his dream tonight is not that -- it's terrible pain echoed from the depths of the hells. it's brimstone and iron, yes, but it is also cold so deep that hymnal knows he will feel it when he wakes. it is a pull of a devil locked in the thickest ice seen on any plane, horns and claws scraping and scraping and scraping to await his freedom.

it's vespin, his new companion, begging for forgiveness lest the lord of the hells have him once more (and his dreams are keen to show him what awaits there, with flayed flesh and burning skin. vespin had plenty of scars to award an adventurous imagination.)

his goddess sits over them, her hands folded, framed by golden wings of burning flame, and she smiles so kindly and tells him my sweetest child, you have done a good deal, and we will all suffer for it.

it's at that point that vespin knocks against his shield and he's jolting awake, hand reaching for the blade at his side before he realizes where they are and who he's with.

vespin, his one cloudy eye weeping idly, tells him he was having a nightmare, then asks what he was dreaming about. hymnal rolls onto his back and considers the stars above them, his tail lashing before he sighs.

" visions of wartime. i'm sure you understand. " he looks to vespin without turning his head. " i'll take over watch, if you'd like to rest. "
