2022 Retrospective: Most Underrated Comeback

Jay Chang – LIAR

I have never heard of this guy and so has probably nobody else because this song currently has only 17k views on YouTube, which feels like a crime. This song just rides with the Rock/Punk sound that so many people tried this year, and it rides at dawn, leaving the rest in the dust (except WOODZ). It also helps that he’s very cute. At the moment he’s a participant of Boys Planet and I hope it goes well for him. He deserves it.

E’LAST – Creature

I really want to stop putting them in this category, but I can’t seem to find an end with it. This comeback was the first time they were able to do full promotions and that’s great. The costumes for this comeback were also amazing, especially the red ones (and no, EXO-L’s, there is no similarity to Obsession in the styling. Fuck off!). What kind off killed the little traction this comeback had, was that three days after the release, their YouTube channel was hacked. They got back on track afterwards, but it still hung over the comeback. I also really like that the song, music video and choreo are all created around the concept of being creatures.

MIYAVI feat. Kang Daniel – HUSH HUSH

I do not know how this collaboration came into being, but it’s great. MIYAVI and Daniel’s voices fit really well together, which is a sentence I never thought I would say. But yeah, more of this. Also, MIYAVI’s guitar solo is stellar.

ONEWE – MONTAGE

ONEWE is one of the only K-Rock bands, that I’m following, even if it’s just because their main vocalist is amazing. But yes, this song is really good and way to cool for a B-Side. The guitar solo in this song is probably one of the best I have heard all year.

PIXY – Villain

This was such a glow up for them. I liked their music last year fine enough, but when you debut in the same in the same year, as PURPLE KISS, what was I supposed to do. This year, there was a similar situation. PURPLE KISS had their comeback with memeM and they came back basically the next week with this song. The difference is that I like Villain and don’t like memeM. It’s a mafia concept that actually lets its members shoot people, which I don’t think I have really seen with girl groups. I also really like that they just drop an uncensored swear word like it’s nothing. The beat drop is also incredibly satisfying.

Forestella – Save Our Lives/Utopia

I’m still on my Forestella agenda, so here are both of their original songs of this year. Their music is just incredible and I absolutely love what they are doing. It’s that theatre nerd stuck in me.

Things I have decided about my still WIP Destiny OC: -She is Awoken, and was a Corsair in her former life. She had enough functional equipment that her Ghost could determine her old name, which she uses -Name ideas are Liari and Lamne, but I’m bad at names -She died in the battle against Oryx’s Dreadnaught, with her corpse being ejected into a further-out orbit by the second blast (The one that almost killed the Young Wolf

-On that note, she is not the Young Wolf (I prefer the more down-to-earth, less god-slaying side of Destiny)

-Her ghost (Name ideas include Flotsam and Comet) was on a jumpship with a few Guardians and a bunch of other Ghosts going planet-to-planet in search of New Lights. She got ejected through a hull breach during a Fallen attack, and wasn’t recovered

-Liari/Lamne got rezzed when Flotsam/Comet happened to drift by her corpse, sometime between the start of the SIVA crisis and the Red War

-Flotsam/Comet definitely rezzed her primarily because it was either that or drift in space forever, but insists that she definitely totally found “the one”

-After several months spent mostly dead, practicing with the Light during the brief times between revival and suffocation, she eventually got her first chance to go anywhere that isn’t space

-I’m hazy on exact sequence of events as well as where specifically she ended up, but her orbital drop strategy was to to Deadfall Tether herself to a Warsat as it zipped by, then stow Flotsam/Comet inside so she’d actually survive re-entry when the Warsat deorbited

-She eventually ends up being one of the early adopters of Stasis, utilizing a unique combination of Stasis and Void Light in the field

-Personality-wise, she’s generally a patient and pragmatic planner, and refuses to buy into any sort of higher-purpose greater-good dogma. She’ll save who she can when she can, with risk always being a sticking point. Outside of the field, she’s a surprisingly meek and introverted person, often forgetting that she’s in a conversation partway through them. Definitely an over-apologizer, except when she’s got her heels dug in on something

-Flotsam/Comet is more brash and fairly sarcastic, with not much of a filter. Whenever she’s right about something she’s a bit insufferable, and when she turns out wrong about something she tends to change the subject about it. She and Liari/Lamne butt heads often in the field, especially when stakes are high. Flotsam/Comet always favors taking risks for the chance of better outcomes, Liari/Lamne favors waiting and observing until the right opportunity comes up.

-As an example, Liari/Lamne’s plan to get out of orbit was the aforementioned “Lasso a Warsat and drop with it” Method, which would of course require her to practice long enough to manifest a Super. Flotsam/Comet, who had spent quite a bit more time conscious while floating in space and was understandably eager to not be floating in space, suggested using spike grenades as thrust for a not-so-controlled descent and hoping for the best

Past that, I’m not 100% sure how her story goes. On the one hand I like the idea of her at least getting in contact with the Vanguard before Forsaken because obvious reasons (She’s a Hunter btw, forgot to mention that), but on the other hand I like the idea of her having little to no Vanguard contact until the events of Beyond Light, with her first constructive interactions with other Lightbearers being Eris and the Drifter on Europa. Either way she’ll definitely be rather cynical towards the Vanguard, possibly working with them but never actually officially becoming a Guardian. I Might try to write up a fireteam for her as well, possibly the Guardians of other Ghosts from the flight that Flotsam/Comet got jettisoned from, but idk. Definitely gonna draw her at some point, and nail down her loadout and abilities. The interplay between Void Light and Stasis is gonna be fun to explore.

Lizzie McGuire: Elizabeth “Lizzie” McGuire [ISFP]

Fi (Introverted Feeling)- Lizzie is certainly led by how she feels in the present moment. As she was an adolescent in the series, her moral code was developing. Her identity varies as she can be caring, rational, and cooperative but sometimes rebellious, disrespectful, and rude. She is well aware of right and wrong and always ends up choosing to do the right thing in the end. She is a good person and will do anything for the ones she care about. She even helps out her enemies. Lizzie is a perfect example of a real, raw human and that is what audiences loved about her. She wasn’t perfect and didn’t have everything planned out or all together but she had a good heart that shined through it all. 

Se (Extroverted Sensing)- Lizzie’s concerns are very superficial, as Miranda’s are. She cares a lot about her social status and wants to go out and experience all the fun and exciting things, in hopes it will grant her popularity. However, when she does achieve a bump in status, it is only temporary because she realizes that being with the cool kids is not where she belongs (Fi). She doesn’t think about or plan much for the future. She takes everyday as it comes. She excels at many athletic sports such as football and rhythmic gymnastics. She won the gym record of who could hold onto the bar the longest. 

Ni (Introverted Intuition)- Lizzie can think deeply when needed. She learns from her mistakes and grows as a person through self reflection. Advice from her parents and Gordo help aid growth in this function.

Te (Extroverted Thinking)- Lizzie doesn’t have many goals but doesn’t really know how to manage others to achieve the few goals she does have. She often feels stuck in her situations. 

Note: In honor of the show coming back, I decided to type Lizzie and some of the characters!

[Anime Review] Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? / Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka? / DanMachi

BEWARE: SPOILERS INBOUND

Is it wrong to try to pick up girls is a dungeon? That is among one of the weirdest titles an anime would have. Probably the longest too. To make my life convenient, I will be using ‘DanMachi’ to refer to this anime.

Anyhow, DanMachi may seem like some ecchi anime at first when you take a first glance. However, I beg you to reconsider and take a second look into it. Based on the light novel series with the same name, the anime adapts the source very closely, so you will be rarely missing any vital piece of action when watching this.

Story - 10/10

Story written by Fujino Omori, DanMachi has a very similar concept to some ‘game’ anime out there like that of Sword Art Online or Log Horizon. Instead of a normal human being being brought into the virtual world of gaming, DanMachi starts off in this world where both logic and game mechanics coexist. Some examples may be the leveling system in this series. Each adventurer (player) would have a certain level and it increases over time as they grow stronger.

One thing unique about DanMachi is that it uses characters from various mythologies around the world. There are some gods I’ve never heard of, and some that I am familiar with such as the Norse God of Mischief, Loki or the Greek Goddess of Architecture, Hestia. Apparently, all the various deities from the heavens decided to descend to the Lower World, all because they were bored up there in heaven and wanted more entertainment. As a result, each deity that descended to the lower world will be the leader of a familia. In familiar terms, a familia defined in this series would be similar to a clan or a guild, where adventurers become subordinates of their deities and work together as a family. 

Our protagonist, Bell Cranell, is a young teenage boy. The series starts off with his journey to become a strong adventurer. He joined the Hestia Familia recruited by the goddess herself and is the only member of the familia. Throughout the series, Bell grows stronger at a more faster rate than most adventurers due to his unique ability ‘Liaris Freese’, which grants him increased growth in stats. He also meets new characters along the way in which he befriends and join him on his journey to become a strong adventurer. Initially, he wanted to follow his grandfather’s dream, to have a harem of women. According to Bell’s grandfather’s words, the best method of picking up girls would be in the dungeon, hence the title of the series. While this may be a very weird motive, other elements of the series, such as conflict between other adventurers and deities trying to mess things up around Bell sort of ‘delay’ his objective to have a harem. There were so many plots and subplots that the viewer tends to forget Bell’s true objective in the first place. I don’t mind this concept as our protagonist isn’t too gung-ho about picking up girls. However, many female characters he meets along his journey tend to fall for him.

Overall, the story is one of a kind. It is very rare that you would find a story with such amazing characters.

Character - 10/10

The anime does a splendid job on developing the characters in the series, especially Bell, our protagonist. We get to see him grow from a weak adventurer that has no strengths but courage to an adventurer that can kill a monster hundred times his size. Not only that, other supporting characters like Liliruca Erde and Welf Crozzo take the spotlight as well. Their backstories were very emotional as most characters have a tragic backstory that caused them to what they are in the present timeline.

Art - 9/10

From the studio that brought you Shokugeki no Souma and the popular romcom series Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, studio J.C. staff’s animation and art in this series are still up to standard. The beautiful landscapes and the bird’s eye view of the Labyrinth City of Orario are a sight for sore eyes. Their art and design of the caves and dungeons located beneath Orario are very detailed, as well as the expressions of the characters. The deities’ designs look to be quite interesting, taking a step back from the actual mythology behind them such as Loki being a female in the series, but Loki is a male in the actual Norse mythology.

Sound/music - 8/10

Don’t get me wrong, the sound and music wasn’t disappointing. It just didn’t stand out for me. The openings and endings of the series wasn’t really my cup of tea and I never really bothered sitting through them each episode. The opening, Hey World by Yuka Iguchi was decent. The soundtrack was a great pleasure to hear, as the composer of the series uses various instruments and genres of music to better suit the world of Orario.

Overall - 9.3/10

As a fan of the series, DanMachi always brings a thrill to my heart and I love every episode of the series. I was so hooked into the series that I even started reading the English translated light novels by original writer Fujino Omori. With a second season to bring back the adventures of Bell and his comrades, I cannot wait what the studio would show us in the wonderful world of Orario. A movie is also set to be released in theatres in 2019 entitled  Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka?: Arrow of Orion. This movie has an original plot and story written by the light novel series author Fujino Omori.

A spinoff series dubbed  Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka?: Sword Oratoria or Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon: Sword Oratoria replays the events of the first season of the anime, but the story is told in the perspective of Aiz Wallenstein, a supporting character in the series as well as Bell’s idol.

I highly recommend watching this anime if you want some action and thrills that will leave you asking ‘where has this been in my whole life?’. I believe the DanMachi series deserves more love and attention in the world of anime.
