Soushi Souai | Chapter New Years Illustration 2023 [EN TL] MangaDex Link | All Soushi Souai updates
Another Liberum manga! This time it’s a story about blond delinquent boy and a black-haired serious girl who like each other and all of their friends. It starts out as lighthearted, funny romance story but it soons becomes more serious. Also the mangaka her artstyle really improves from the beginning. So if you are new to the series please give it a proper chance (so not only the first twenty chapters). ❧ Join Discord for updates and extras. ❧ See any mistakes? Let me know so I can fix it.

I saw your kapelusznik post and i need to know what did you think of 1670??
Absolutely LOVE it.
I highly recommend everyone check out the first episode at least - even though it's in Polish and about Poland, it's very accessible and the humour carries through (source: my non-Polish husband losing his shit multiple times per episode).
It manages to find that incredibly rare balance of treating its source material with cleverness, understanding and respect without taking itself seriously as a hilarious slice-of-life mocumentary. It parodies historical and modern nonsense alike, with a distinctly Polish - or should I say Sarmatian - flair. The characters are solid archetypes brought to life with a real warmth and depth.
Sure, lots of it is purposefully anachronistic (and my only, extremely minor gripe is that I think they pushed Aniela just a little too far into modern wokeness), but there are some truly excellent details to delight history lovers and Poland enjoyers alike.
If you're on the fence, please check out the first episode!

mare liberum?
mare liberum is an old, old multichapter...i can't even remember the last time i posted a complete chapter, and i think it lost all but one of its regular readers (thank you zuzu, even though you're not reading this). i have no idea if i'll ever finish it, even though some of the remaining 7 or 8 chapters are already drafted.
mare liberum is an au set in fake 19th century fake lisbon, and it's a šejan with past movren. i know, i know, this is sort of vintage, as šejan is no longer a thing and its protagonist (dejan lovren) is sort of...out of favor in the world, but this is fiction and it's an AU so it's fictional fiction. it also features as side characters the 2018 croatia nt squad, and has a lot of really fun cameos from other players as well.
part of why i haven't worked on it is that the end is so sad that when i wrote it i started crying, and another part is that the main character is representing a part of me that i think has kind of been therapised into the past. which is good! in the fic, we have slutty gay Sailor Dejan, who's full of a lot of self-loathing and loneliness. he became a sailor to avoid having to be a gay married man, and whilst at sea his beloved younger brother died of ~consumption (it's the fake 19th century and a sad story, so this is obligatory). he becomes violent and an alcoholic to an extent and feels like he deserves all of this misery and pain, possibly because god is punishing him for his sexual orientation. after an extremely violent altercation with sailor sergio ramos over Mo, dejan has to escape his friends on the ship Anfield and Captain Klopp and miraculously finds the Vatreni, a croatian ship where he finds a happy home. or does he? something is still missing. when they dock in an unnamed city and are stuck there because of this unstopping rainstorm, dejan meets a strange and captivating man at the Gay Sailor Bar and Inn where they are all trapped during the storm. this man is šime, and dejan falls instantly in love with him, but there's just something...off about him that can't be named, and he travels with a crew of very alarming and off-putting individuals. dejan hopes šime's love will be the answer to his problems at long last, but as their feelings deepen and the rain doesn't let up, things grow stranger for sailor dejan. who is this šime--or what is he?
you can read the first 11 chapters here if you're interested. the major character death warnings aren't really for anything but the unpublished last chapter, tho there is some character death throughout. spoilers: in one of the chapters, cronald mcdonald gets gnawed to death by some sort of...mysterious creature.

Historical backstabbing political drama, where they're trying to get a bill passed, but first we need to stop all of these people who might want to exercise the liberum veto, here is bribery and blackmail and foreign influence, what do you mean you're forming a confederation?

I’m currently on a road trip across the Australian outback to visit my relatives
there’s nothing quite like being trapped in a car for 6+ hours to get you to write the new chapter of your fic

References in 1670 (Updated)
General info
Names
Jan Paweł - is a reference to a pope, Jan Paweł II. He's considered "the greatest polish person", up to a comical point. So he turned into a meme.
Jakub - A reference to a saying "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". In polish "Jak Kuba bogu tak bóg Kubie". Literally "As Kuba to god, god to Kuba".
Jędrula - A reference to a show about Foster family, to a character that liked to drink whiskey.
Andrzej - A stereotypical neighbour, where he has everything better than you.
Żmija - A reference to Ojciec Mateusz, a show about a priest solving crime, played by Artur Żmijewski (hence the name). Żmija is from Sandomierz, that's where Ojciec Mateusz was set. (From multiple people, @rabarbarzcukrem mainly.)
Historical background
Poland was going into a sort of a recession. It used to be one of the most powerful countries in Europe. As well as Lithuania, of course. Time of the Commonwealth. The plague didn't hit the Commonwealth as much because it wasn't densily populated. The biggest issue (one of many) were the tatars, who just kind of lived there. Usually were bribed into gaining some power in the country so they won't couse trouble. Lithuania was getting Polonised, but it wasn't going as good as you could imagine. It's the time after the swedish flood, where the whole country was basically looted. It was considered a very open country, many Jews lived here.
Liberum Veto - it's just that one person can say no and whatever they voted on, won't pass. Also huge reason why partations later happened.
Culture
Drowning of Marzanna is a ritual that happens every year, on the first day of spring, to say goodbye to winter. Marzanna is a slavic goddess associeted with death, winter and nature. Marzanna is sometimes set on fire and then thrown into a river. + Interesting tags from @ukulelegodparent (From multiple people)

Hunting by nobles was also kinda a cultural thing. It was often described in the books from that time.

Konstytucja 3 Maja by Jan Matejko (1891)
Happy birthday to the Polish Constitution of 3 May 1791, aka "if you're going to innovate democracy, go big or go home".
(Spoiler: they couldn't go home, since the 'go big' part was so naughty that mom, dad and dad put 'home' on the top shelf until the Polish people had sat in the corner for a while* and thought about what they'd done.)
