I'm really surprised how many young fiber art people don't know that they can get pattern books from their local library. So as a PSA:

Your local public library has pattern books! They have crochet, knitting, weaving, and quilting pattern books! If they don't have the book you want, or the craft you want, you can ask for us to get it for you! It's free!

I did a faux rebind of Dune as a birthday gift for a friend of mine. Thankfully, his girlfriend sent me pictures of his own Dune Edition (in German) and its measurements. That way he can use this book sleeve for the German edition too. He’s been complaining about that design for quite a while, basically every time we enter a book store.

I also hand-stitched this little desert design into the book cloth, because I don’t own a cricut lol

Today I learned that @neil-gaiman—among others who I was happily surprised to see—modeled for a book of knitting patterns called Geek Knits (2015) by Joan of Dark [Toni Carr] with photographs by Kyle Cassidy (ISBN 9781250051387 for those of you interested in the patterns!).

The wild things you can find in your public libraries lmao.

GUYS GUESS WHAT

I took my friend (who doesn't get out much and needs to have a quiet retreat space) to the library today.

I FORGOT HOW RAD THE LIBRARY IS.

-My library has private rooms with locking doors that you check out with your library card and then have keycard access to.

-These rooms are made of plexiglass for Obvious Reasons, but still. Rooms.

-I checked out a Lounge space and, guys, it's a balcony.

-It's over the main entrance to the library so you can see everyone coming in and out. The door locks so it's private, but it's also open air to the tall ceilings and has SO MUCH natural light.

-literally so much natural light the one exterior wall is floor-to-ceiling windows with a view over a fountain and a courtyard and the local shopping district. the sunset was rad.

-My laptop connected directly to the WiFi.

-There were so many people there! There are chairs spread throughout and a bunch of computers and people just chilled and hung out!

-My friend was thrilled to be able to navigate a quiet space with strangers who didn't speak to her, and then to have a retreat space.

-My library also has a Makerspace (!!!) and a Cricut machine (!!!) and I can email someone and get trained in how to use it!

-Someone was in the recording booth and I couldn't tell what she was reading but it sounded cool.

-There's a whole room along the side of the upstairs that's just for teens. Like literally just. The sign says that if you're not a teenager you should see the staff for other rooms. There wasn't anyone there when I stuck my head in but there's a giant whiteboard and orb-style chairs and

-sorry I forgot to mention that my balcony has not only a couch but also several big comfy chairs (like, I can sit on my chair and put my feet on it too and balance my book on my knees and it's STILL not too small of a chair) and a couple coffee tables and a corner where the sunlight isn't direct y'all it's so nice

-I'm so glad my tax dollars went to this, guys. We're stuck on campus for Thanksgiving break and we desperately needed to go somewhere that didn't cost money.

-for as much as I get on about the necessity of Third Spaces, you think I'd remember this.

-I also found out my friend likes Agatha Christie novels. She read me a section while I washed dishes tonight, and I think I'm gonna like them too.

Project: crocheted top

Thanks again to everyone who gave me good crochet 101 resources last year! I've been having a blast learning how to crochet.

Introduction:

I finished this top a while ago. It's kind of improvised, containing various stitches and squares I found in library books. The yarn's a beige cotton I had in my stash.

I used this project as a challenge to try out as many different techniques and stitches I could think of, making it a great learning experience.

The project:

The shape's a very simple T-shape, with buttons at the shoulders to make it easier to slip over my head. It's basically a tube body with a rectangle at the top for sleeves.

I started out by making enough squares for the bottom lace to fit around my hips. Once those were attached together into a circle, I evened out the edge with (US) single crochet stitches while also adding a tiny bit of shaping. I then started my tube for the body, which consists of a strip of lace and a double crochet flower pattern.

Once the tube reached where I wanted the sleeves to begin, I made enough squares to fit the width of the tube plus four extra squares (one for the back and front of each sleeve). I wanted to try and see if I could turn a square into a triangle, so two of those squares ended up being triangles in the front of the top.

Once all that was attached, I built up the rest of the sleeves and the neckline and worked buttonholes into the final rows.

Conclusion:

I fell in love with the versatility of crochet! It's such a cool craft if you love improvising as much as I do.

When I struggled making my first chain a year ago, I never thought I'd be creating something like this any time soon. Now when I look at this top, I can already see multiple things I would do differently next time.

That's the beauty of learning new things. If you allow yourself the time and kindness needed to practice and to learn from your mistakes, you'd be surprised by what you can do.

Fun fact: Your local public library very likely has an entire shelf or two dedicated to quilt books. I've just looked into my local library's collection, and it's impressive. Books I've wanted to buy for myself are available for me there, free of cost. Technically, a couple pennies from your local taxes cover the cost of the library, so you've already paid for it.

Always make use of your library. Millions of books, all right there. Learn how to embroidery, sew, paint, and other arts and crafts, just by checking them out in the library.

Most libraries also have copy machines and printers, and will cost very little to use. Copy the patterns you want to keep, or print out digital patterns you've found. I've done this many times! Especially now that I'm without a printer (mine died months ago after it refused to print in anything but yellow).

Use your library. It's there, you've already paid for it, and you don't have to go shopping for books.
