The summer after the "Earthquake" in '86 had basically been...a bummer. Between Eddie and Max recovering in the hospital, physical therapy, volunteering, and helping to put the town back together, everyone in their rag-tag group didn't really feel like going to picnics and pool parties.

It was the Summer of '87, and Steve Harrington was bound and determined to make sure everyone he loved had the most awesome summer ever.

This especially went for his boyfriend, Eddie.

The poor guy spent the rest of April and all of May in the hospital. June got him released, but he was bedridden and had to hide out at the mausoleum that was Steve's house. By the time July rolled around, his name was completely cleared, but he was learning to walk again like he wasn’t a mummy. Add to it that Max wasn’t officially released until the end of July. Nobody was in a particular party mood. (They still celebrated Eddie's birthday, of course. The kids came over to watch Labyrinth. Wayne bought pizza. Steve made chocolate cake. Eddie snuck a taste before the party by licking the frosting from Steve's lips. Hell of a way to have a first kiss, right?)

Steve was so determined to make this birthday the best for Eddie, he didn't think before he said, "Whatever you want for your birthday, I'll give to you Ed's. Just tell me what you want."

See, Steve loves his boyfriend a lot. That being said, he also knows that his boyfriend is a mischievous goblin man that lives for deals like that.

With a maniacal twinkle in his eye and a smirk that both put worry in his stomach and his knees weak, Eddie said, "Anything, you say?"

And that lead to this.

Steve looked himself in the mirror.

"I hate myself. I just-this is so stupid!"

Eddie called from the other side of the door, "But you love me, dontcha, Lover Boy?"

Steve groaned as he adjusted the shorts.

Though he was still a hot guy with great hair (if he did say so himself l), Steve had gained some weight and muscle since he last donned the Scoops uniform. He knew he didn't grow taller, but the shirt that once fit now showed a sliver of his stomach. His thighs filled the leg holes a bit more. The uniform before made him look a bit like a dweeb. Now he definitely looked like a dweeb that's clothes shrunk in the wash.

Eddie was so going to laugh at him.

Was he really going to walk out there like this?

Steve sighed.

"Well, I love you more than I hate myself, which fucks me up because it makes me agree to do shit like this. So..."

Taking one last look in the mirror, Steve walked into the room. He expected the man he loved to laugh at his ridiculousness.

He did *not* expect the aroused growl and being pounced on by said boyfriend.

In between being kissed within an inch of his life, Eddie said, "Do you have *any* idea how many times I went to Startcourt that summer, just to get a look at you in this? You're my fantasy, my wet dream, baby. And you're all mine now."

Later, after Eddie had...*ahem* unwrapped his present, he cuddled Steve close in bed. "Thank you for giving me that, Stevie. Best present for the best birthday I ever got."

Honestly… I don’t really know. A few years ago, I had really bad prenatal depression, and it really affected my writing. Over that time I tried to push through it a lot, but everything I put down just looked like absolute trash to me. And by that point, I knew quite a few people in the fandom, and I was just… I don’t know, embarrassed by the thought of people I knew seeing the fact that I couldn’t string together a coherent sentence.

Meanwhile, when I started Peremo, all I really had was an ending and the thought that I wanted to write just a really unhinged, scary Tom; I didn’t have much plot. But also because I knew I wanted to take it to a really dark place, I just thought… to hell with it… maybe I’ll just start completely fresh and write it out and post with a pseud, and then if it sucks, it doesn’t matter, and my friends won’t think I’m the one who wrote that bizarre, badly written, dark fic no one liked 😂

But then I found that it actually really worked! The added layer of anonymity brought me away from my self-imposed perfectionist hole, took away my fears of putting out a ‘non-romantic ship fic’, and I found myself enjoying fic writing again! And then after not writing for about two years, I managed to string together and finish a 120k story 😁

So yeah! TL;DR: The pseud was an attempt to get through writer’s block, and gave me a ‘safe’ outlet for venturing into darker waters in my writing 🤗

I have so much I could say about how Izzy and Blackbeard's relationship has deteriorated hhhhh,,,, Izzy is a problem child but I'm so glad the story is crashing towards his character actually growing and changing. In season 1 he at least got the crumbs Ed would throw him like "I need you here", now he's only getting abuse and maybe he's throwing himself at it because he recognises he had a part to play in reaching this point and believes he deserves it.

Fang's delivery on "how you doing Izzy" will keep me warm and fed all winter. Masterclass in approaching someone, truly tender and genuine but not too pressuring. God.

A little over a year later, I carry Mom with me as my best friend, my biggest supporter, and my home. There’s this music box I gave her when I was young, and inside she’d always kept a letter I once wrote…

She and I could go round and ROUND sometimes.

But she was the Mom who would cover for me when I needed to miss school because of anxiety or depression. She’d make us a cot with juice and crackers in front of the tv when we were home sick. She’d scratch my back for an hour just to comfort me. She would caretake our friends as if they were her own kids. If there was a damaged or small portion of food she’d always take the bad or small so that we had the good. Her favorite thing in the world was spending time with us. She actually dreaded when summer was over and we had to go back to school because she actually loved and enjoyed our company above any other. All while surviving hell. 

Even as adults, she bought us little gifts for Valentine’s and Easter. And her top priority was always wanting us to being okay. She carried our pain and rejoiced in our victories. Most of the best parts of me I owe to my mother. She knew my strengths and my weaknesses and she was there for both. Being a mother wasn’t just some thing she did. It was who she was. She used to say she didn’t even remember what it was like before she was our mom. We were her world. And she was mine.

As much as she loved us, I often joke that she would throw us in front of a bullet if it meant saving her grandbabies. And she would disagree and said no, she’d throw herself first… then us if necessary. 😂

Kelan at 16, now has her face in her 20s and her wit and inherent goodness. Jace looks a lot like she did as a kid and has her heart and curiosity. And we all have her humor, sarcasm and stubbornness. And as well, her indelible strength to survive. To somehow keep going in the face of so much.

I miss my Mom. Every moment, every day. And I’m sorry. For so much. Mostly I’m sorry we didn’t have more time. But I’m doing my best to get there for the both of us. And I only hope I’m making her proud. 

I love you, Mama. 💜

2. Work you are most proud of (and why):

hmmmmm, that's a tough one! I love them all for different reasons, but I will say I'm very proud of Long Is the Road Out of Hell because it's my longest fanfic to date (almost 60k!) and at one point I really wasn't sure if I'd be able to finish it. but I did!

3. Work you are least proud of (and why):

tbh if I'm not proud of something, I won't publish it. but I think the work that frustrated me the most was Whiskey & Wine, my kinktober fic. I pushed myself too hard with too big of a goal and burnt myself out halfway through. but I did learn the importance of setting boundaries for myself (and why I need to be careful committing to challenges 😅)

4. A favorite excerpt of your writing:

not gonna lie, once I publish something, the words tend to leave my brain, so I don't always remember what I write lol. I should probably keep a doc of good lines from my fics so I have something to present when people ask me 😂 but here are two excerpts that I'm pretty proud of.

Devil in the Woods: He had loved her since the first time he opened his eyes to find her snuggled up on his chest. He had loved her longer, since the moment he’d held her in his arms on that endlessly rainy night. And longer still, he’d loved the little girl who played jacks with him on May Day and laughed at his wild antics.

Hooked on a Feeling: He knew he could be… a lot, as kinder people said. A goddamn nuisance, according to everyone else. He didn’t mean to be, he just tended to… latch on to things. Kind of like a bulldog (but in a nice and lovable way, thank you, Jeff). And right now he had ChrissyChrissyChrissy clamped tight between his jaws, and he hoped to god she didn’t ask him to let go.

5. Share or describe a favorite comment you received:

I have a few regular commenters who give me the longest, loveliest comments where they literally analyze each chapter section by section 😭 it makes me feel so loved. but as for one individual comment, I distinctly remember a commenter from one of my early fics commenting on a really tough scene I did re: chrissy's eating disorder. they said that they also had an eating disorder, and that chapter was very healing for them. I don't think I'll ever get another comment as powerful as that.

6. A time when writing was really, really hard:

I go in and out of mild anxious/depressive episodes, mostly due to outside stressors, and that makes it really hard to write. writing is the one constant joy in my life, and when I don't even feel like doing that, I know something is very, very wrong. but luckily, they don't usually last too long!

7. A scene or character that you wrote that surprised you:

mike's redemption arc in Long Is the Road! that one was a total curveball to me, and it only came about because it was the closest place I could think of to have Chrissy walk to after her mom kicked her out. total accident, but it spawned on of my favorite sibling-ships for chrissy that I've ever written!

also writing wayne's pov! i never intended to do that, but once I started, his voice just kind of stuck in my head 😂

8. How did you grow as a writer this year:

I wrote a lot. like over 300k of fanfic. and i even got back into writing some original fiction, which I'm so excited about!

I also started writing smut for the first time in 2023, which was something I never anticipated doing, let alone enjoying! but it's been super fun

9. How do you hope to grow next year:

I'd like to work more on my original fiction, maybe get a short story published. I'd also like to get better at world-building! I tend to get so focused on the characters that I forget they exist in a place I should spend some time creating lol

10. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):

@slumped-in-the-arms-of-fiction all the way! she's been such a wonderful beta reader, cheerleader, and overall positive influence on my writing. I Can't Get Rid of You wouldn't ever have happened without her support and feedback!

11. Anything in your real life show up in your writing this year:

ooh, buddy! pieces of myself get sprinkled all over the damn place 😂 but as for specifics...

Galentines and Valentines opening scene was reminiscent of the girls' nights me and my college friends used to have (and still have sometimes)

Hooked on a Feeling had elements of my own past experiences of being laid up in a hospital (and being very annoyed about it)

This Old Man was absolutely inspired by my love of Columbo

You Got Me Good definitely included some of my own thoughts and feelings about when I get a little too high 😂

12. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers:

give your writing time.

it's so tempting when you have a new idea to jump on it and then get frustrated when it doesn't immediately turn out the way you want, but I've found that if I give myself time to think over a piece before I write it, and let it sit for a little while after I write it, I'm much happier with the end results!

13. Any new projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:

finishing my three WIPs! and hopefully a little christmas fic 😂 I don't have anything else immediately in the works, thank god!

I love how far Remi and Violet have in terms of their relationship since the first fanfiction.

Do you think there will come a point where Violet is confronted with how much Remi does to protect her? Sometimes I feel like Violet is a bit clueless, as we’ve seen already with Remi’s depression.

I think she's known for a while the lengths Remi will—and does—go to for her, she just never liked or agreed with the means. What she didn't realise up until recently, was the toll it also took on Remi. In that regard yeah, she's been pretty clueless, which I think might actually be par for the course with Violet as a character 😂

They've definitely grown though and as the story moves you'll see her trying to flip the scales more and more. If you haven't been through a depression like that, I think a lot of the time you don't know what to do or say, hell even I don't know what to say to people most of the time. I know what it's like, but I can't help them. So I think she's doing what she can the way she knows how and that's by standing up for her sister, protecting her, and trying to make sure she's safe.

So there's not a single lightbulb moment for her, but it does become very apparent and unfortunately, she also knows no matter what she does, Remi won't stop. I hate to say it, but there's going to be some tough scenes coming up in the first half of this story, so you'll definitely see more of this in action 🖤

As an aside, too, because I love this relationship so much so I can't stop talking about it, clueless is definitely the best word for Violet. She copped a pretty bad rap from everyone during Fear & Flame, because we are reading from Remi's perspective, but she's not a bad person, or a bad sister.

It's really hard to be there for someone who's depressed and prone to angry outbursts and meltdowns—the way Remi hurts doesn't make her treatment of her sister in their younger years ok by any means. You can't really blame Violet for drawing away from that relationship. Now that they're older and she has more of an understanding though and she knows the lengths her sister has gone to for her, she's doing her best to be there 🖤

...and she's also dragon-bonded to a man who will enable her to hell and back to flip those scales 😂

Hi! I really love your Spidersona Sunny, they're such a mood. Ngl they crack me up with how done they already are with the whole hero gig😂 and I was curious about something.

Do you think Sunny and Miles would get along? They seem like they would be great friends for lots of reasons, like their shared love of art and how similar you said their worlds are. Also maybe a shared kind of disillusionment with heroing, cause let's be real, there ain't no way Miles is coming out of any of this even slightly okay. Highkey think he was a little depressed before he got jumped by hundreds of spider people and after having the friends and mentor he was desperate enough to give up his passions for, only for them to gaslight and betray the hell out of him, plus whatever fucked up shit that's for sure happening in Btsv, it's gonna get so much worse. That and I think Miles would find Sunny's ability to juke the canon, kinda like he does, so awesome. Deadpool joking about Sunny avoiding plot trauma by running off screen is everything. They just say, "nah, fam I'm good" and just leaves🤣

Miles: If you teach me how to juke canon I'll watch Deadpool for you.

Miles and Sunny's attitudes towards heroing are a bit different, i think. Miles stepped up to the mantle after building up confidence that he deserves it, that he can be someone ppl rely on. He's outraged by the idea that Spiderman as a symbol of heroism/hope can't "always" win or can't do "both." He also has bit of pettiness around the lack of reward/freedom/gratitude for being Spiderman; it comes with the territory of being a teenager who does selfless deeds on the daily only to get grounded or have his roomate not bother to dial 3 numbers or be told that he isnt allowed to stop his dad from dying-

Ahem.

Whereas Sunny doesn't have a sense of duty or optimism towards being Spiderman. They don't WANT to be someone people rely on, they NEVER believed that one person could "always" or "do both", they're resigned to the things happening around them.

Sunny doesn't know about canon events, courtesy of their Peter not telling them because they freaked out at the mere concept of a multiverse and want nothing to do with HQ outside of removing anomalies from their own dimension. Deadpool makes 4th wall breaking jokes but Sunny sees it the same way you and I would react if someone pretended to break the fourth wall; its just a joke. Like "haha, what if we were in a simulation." Of course, ever since they found out about the multiverse, those jokes became much LESS funny to them 😬

So yeah, Sunny dodging canon doesn't come from a determination to live up to what they think Spiderman should be, or out of defiance of The Way Things Are like how it is for Miles, its the exact opposite. They're avoiding responsibility and expectations, they've decided that nothing they do will make a Real difference except to make them More Depressed when they inevitably fail.

If Miles told them about canon events, their response would probably be something like "......... I wish you hadn't told me that." Because what are they supposed to do?? Not only are they being told that Fate has guaranteed certain tragedies occurred to hundreds of thousands of heroes WAY BETTER THAN THEM- but ALSO that those same far-more-skilled-heroes have dedicated themselves to making sure those tragedies continue to happen. So tell them, what the heck are they supposed to do??

They wouldn't do anything. But they also wouldn't stop Miles. They hate the concept of fate and would hope he breaks the algorithm with his friends and saves the day, because its way easier to place their faith in people who can Actually make change than to get involved and get themself hurt.

As someone who lives here, I am making this post for anyone who wants to visit Ireland at any point, and I figure now's as good a time as any.

Weather

It rains like 24/7 here so bring a fucking rain coat. And an umbrella. I'm so serious. There will be mornings where you'll leave your hotel/tent/wherever you're staying and you'll think "It doesn't look like it's going to rain" NO. BRING THE COAT. The sky is lying to you. Just because it doesn't look like it'll rain does NOT mean it's not gonna rain!!

The west and north tend to get worse weather, but rain happens everywhere here.

History

Not gonna get into it here because that'd be wayyyy too long of a post, but a lot of our tourist attractions rely on people having at least some kind of knowledge of Irish history and/or folklore. It's interesting, if a bit depressing at times, but I'm pretty sure that goes for all countries.

Long story short we were under British control for a really really really REALLY long-ass time, and we fought like hell to get our independence. Oh - speaking of which, if you're anywhere near the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, it's a good idea to avoid wearing orange ESPECIALLY in or around July. This is because orange is seen as a symbol of Unionist beliefs (ie, the belief that Ireland should be part of the UK) and it's a REALLY touchy subject for a lot of people. Do your research. Trust me on that.

Language

First off, most people speak English here (unless you're in a Gaeltacht region, where people mainly speak Irish. These are located in Cork, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Meath, Mayo and Waterford, and they can be a great cultural experience but it's not for the faint of heart.) However, there are like a zillion different regional accents so good fucking luck trying to understand people 😂😂

The way Irish people talk has some nice quirks, some of which I'll share here.

Craic (pronounced "crack") No, it's not drugs. The word craic generally means a good time or other happenings. There are three main ways the word is used.

"What's the craic?" = What's up?/Any news?

To have the craic = To have fun, especially at a party

"No craic" = Boring, nothing happening at all.

If someone invites you for a "cuppa" or better yet, a "cupán tae" (pronounced "cup awn tay") they want you to come in and have a cup of tea with them. This is usually accompanied by a LOT of small talk, which Irish people are experts at.

Other expressions vary WILDLY by county and sometimes even by region, so I'm afraid I'm not much help to you here.

Things To Do Here

First off, our restaurants are quite overpriced, as are our hotels. However, our healthcare is fairly cheap.

We have SO MUCH NATURAL SCENERY. If the weather allows, definitely go out and explore it! Just watch out if you're hiking, as the rain makes a lot of places muddy and slippy, so maybe bring the good hiking boots. We also don't have a lot of animals that can kill you, which is great!

As I mentioned, we have a lot of places to go that are based in our history, and they can be great places to learn about Ireland's past. But if you're not interested in history (which is fine) there are plenty of other options. We have a wax museum in Dublin, a theme park called Emerald Park (formerly Tayto Park, after an Irish potato chip brand) and a LOT of great theatres, pubs and clubs. Oh yes, if there's one thing we do well here, it's our night life!

We even have a coastal trail called the Wild Atlantic Way, which stretches all the way up our western coastline, from Cork to Donegal.

And lastly, if you're in the area, there is this fucking LEGENDARY ice cream parlour in Sligo called Mammy Johnstons. It's RIGHT next to the beach, and (in my limited experience) it's the BEST ice cream place in the country.

Saw the finale and while narratively I don't have a problem with anything that happened, I do think that the pacing and what they chose to show/focus on was ?????????

- reunion was really cute but then we dont see Ed and Stede talk about Piracy vs Retirement or any of their issues at all???

- I mean the pacing of Izzy's arc has been wild to me anyway this season but it feels weird for him to get *both* character development and a tragic death?? and the timing/pacing of it felt really rushed. (for context Character death in stories doesnt tend to bother me as long as it serves a purpose, but the themes of this felt a bit all over the place for me. I also completely understand why people would find his death increadibly upsetting)

- Izzy's speeches were nice but didn't neccessarily feel like they lined up with what we've seen on the show for me tbh (also love ed but lol at the idea that the crew like him more than izzy this season)

-in general S1 izzy and S2 izzy feel like different characters to me and it feels like this death scene was written for S1 izzy not S2 izzy if that makes sense?

- Good for Jackie getting to poison everyone but neither stede, ed or zheng really having much interaction with Ricky at the end felt like a missed oppourtunity. though I suppose that could work with the fact that there was not meant to be an external villlain this season, but then the characters internal problems were kind of brushed over anyway???

- honestly love Zheng and Stedes interaction though, his bumbling managing to keep her alive juuussttt long enough for her to get out of her depression moment and do all the work herself 😂 he truly is most useful as a little pirate mascot.

Tinhat theory here but it kind of felt like maybe this season was originally going to end with Ed and Stede split up again but the writers/ showrunner didn't want to risk not getting renewed and leaving them in a bad place?

Double tin hat theory - Izzy is chilling in the gravybasket with buttons and will show up next season as a ghost/dream/hallucination (or hell just straight up come back, I mean if Ed can do it after being beaten to death 😂 )

Personal Chatter (aka I ramble a bit)

Still looking for jobs, and there are still none to be had. Any time I think I haven't applied to a job in a few days, I check and there's literally nothing new. What makes it feel worse is that my current part-time retail job cut hours like crazy, so I'm only coming in once a week instead of the 4 days I'm available. It especially sucks because I do want to spend my day working, but instead I'm at home attempting to program but I'm running out of steam. Not to mention it gets dark so early now; I used to love that as a kid, but as an adult it's just depressing. I think the only thing that's keeping me sane is the fact that I go out to play Magic on Thursdays with people, and I have ASL class on Wednesdays. It's nice to have scheduled weekly events. Hell, I've even been forcing myself to play video games for an hour or 2 every evening to help me get through my games, because even though I like playing video games, it takes a lot of energy for me to start a play session. The joys of being an adult 😂.

But some good news! I have 3 pages left in my sketchbook and I'm so excited to finish it! I've been drawing only in pen in this book for 3 years, so I'm so ready to start a new one and be able to use pencil and actually take my time with drawing instead of just pumping out sketches. People say that sketching in pen will improve your art faster and enables you to draw faster, but I realized I really like getting sucked into a sketch and take my time with it, which I can't really do with pen.

I've been doing 1 problem per weekday for a week now! Yesterday and today I did some medium-level questions on Strings/Arrays which took about 2 hours each. Yesterday I had to look at other peoples' answers, but today I managed to solve it by myself. Am I in the top percentile for time and space complexity? Absolutely not, but I solved it, so I still consider that a win.

I feel like I'm bored out of my mind. I know I said I was gonna focus on doing a full-stack project this month, but I still haven't done the desktop design for the project and I can't bring myself to continue designing. The good news is that I "finished" the mobile design, so I can instead pivot and just create a mobile app instead if I so choose, and I just might...or just do mobile-view first and get all the functionality done, then move onto desktop.
