Note
i would loooovvveeeee for tae to go to the met gala one day but i'd also be terrified of his stylists doing him dirty 😭😭 which would be such a shame because no one can serve cunt like he can but if his stylists were on his side then tae at the met would be one of the main events of the night TRUST
Let me start from saying that as long as he’s with Celine we have 0 chances of him attending because Hedi got beef with the met BUTTTTTT if we take Celine out of the equation, that’s not happening because Taehyung is probably gonna choose his fit or someone is gonna make it from scratch for him because he’s that stunning and he’s a muse and his wednesday afternoon attire was a three pieces suit up until some time ago… like he WILL slay regardless😭😭😭😭

Dream from 9.6.24
I was going overseas with my ex (MP), we were going to Europe I think for like a month. We were at the airport and I had checked in all my baggage including what was supposed to be my carry-on bag for some reason. I had nothing on my person. We were just waiting for the flight now and everything was going fine until it came back to me that I had put my passport in the carry-on bag and I was freaking out about it. Would I be able to fly without it? I was walking around the airport trying to see who I could ask for help. If they had time to send someone to look for my bag, I would tell them it's a brown handbag with a purple badge of a pickle on it. At least, it’s easily recognizable. I was panicked, really worried. Wherever I went, every line at the help desks were full and I didn't want to wait. I ended up finding a shorter line for food or something and while I was waiting, I overheard that the same thing had happened to some other lady. The attendant told this lady that they would just ask for her home address (to look up on the computer, in place of a passport) before boarding the plane and it would be fine. My spirits lifted but I didn't want to assume that it would be the case for me, so I stayed in line to get my own answer. I ended up peering over into an office stall and asking a lady who was not even serving but thankfully she was nice and helped me. I told her what happened. She said, How long ago did you check it in (the carry-on). I said, Around 2 hours ago. Then she said, It’ll be fine they’ll just ask for my address when I check in to board the plane. I felt so relieved.
Then we were just waiting for departure but I was starting to get really annoyed with MP and we kept bickering about stupid stuff. We tried to make up and he piggy-backed me through a busy part of the airport but because he was so tall, I felt as if I stuck out like a sore thumb which made uncomfortable, like everyone was staring so I got down. Then I needed to use the toilet and he lead us outside to a toilet that looked like it was formerly a horse stable. There was sand everywhere and it was dark. I felt so uncomfortable. How can I go to the toilet here? And I heard the sounds of someone lurking and I couldn’t see who it was, I felt unsafe. The toilets didn’t seem clean and they were leaking water. I didn’t even end up using them, despite wanting to, but he did. Afterwards, I expressed my irritation and disappointment. I said, You don't even try to look after me properly, why would you think I would be happy to even enter a bathroom that looks like that? It's not even safe. Didn't you even think of me? Initially he didn't say anything and sort of ignored me but then we ended up fighting for ages. I suddenly realised going on holiday with him was a big mistake. I felt really heated and I was starting to see red but I tried to keep it under wraps since it was too late to back out. I knew I could control the situation, I could make things back to how they were before we were fighting.
Then It was time to board the plane and when I told lady I didn't have my passport, she seemed to remember me from when I had checked in all my baggage and she said, What about the welcome kit I gave you, I hardly think it would have fit into that bag you had. I was confused. Why was she asking me about this other thing? And of course it would have. The kit (which was a clear case with random shit in it) wasn't that big and would have easily fit in that bag I had. I think she was trying to say that she was disappointed I'd lost that too, in addition to my passport and so I said, I’m sorry but I thought I had it. Then she said, Okay, I’ll give you another welcome kit. I knew she was just doing it to look good in front of everyone but I was grateful anyhow. It was all systems go with getting on the plane it seemed. Then as I was sitting there I realised I had my period. I thought it had stopped already or was on its last days with just a bit of spotting but I realised it had became heavy again. I hadn't packed any pads. I was really worried about surviving the plane ride with what was probably only one pad left. Ideally I would have those overnight pads with me. I looked in my bag. Oh. My brown bag was in my arms, like somehow it appeared as if it had never gone anywhere in the first place. I checked inside and there were 2 super pads and 1 regular pad which would be enough. Surely, it'd last me a 18-20 hour flight. It'd be just enough (I think).

borders II – july 14
On the way back to Edmonton from L.A., we ran into the problem I described here. But that was nothing compared to the previous crossing, not only because American border guards are notoriously more painful than the Canadian ones, but also because of the general unfairness of the world. Let me tell you a story.
In Edmonton lives an odd couple1), a woman from the Czech Republic – a country no one knows much about2) – and a man from Iran – a country everyone knows too much about3) – who decided to take a short trip to L.A. Contrary to their usual habit, they arrived at the airport very early but while the woman MJ expected questions, the man MM didn't really. Still in Edmonton, they made their way to what was the actual US border and the border guard checked her fingerprints because of course, they had them, since she had been to the USA fourteen years before.
(A few years ago, I read an article about system identities, which means that despite the prevailing feeling of anonymity, it is virtually impossible to be anonymous these days, unless perhaps you stayed in the same town your whole life. Your unique bodily characteristics are imprinted into the world's body databases and you can only get a new identity if the system itself cooperates and allows you to do so. So those fingerprints that MJ had entered into the database at the American Embassy in Prague of course matched the ones she showed to a random officer in Edmonton. That worked well, a youngish white woman from the EU going to L.A. for the weekend is a very benign phenomenon after all.)4)
But then it was MM's turn. As the officer was studying his Canadian passport, MM was making a face. It is a very “manly” thing to do and it can also be his thing – being cocky, you know – but you shouldn't really blame him: after having lived with an Iranian passport he was tired of being treated like a terrorist and this shouldn't be happening.
“How old were you when you left Iran?”
“Umm … twenty three.”
“Where did you do your military service?”
“I didn't. I bought myself out.”
“So you had rich parents …”
“Not really …”
“And how can you prove that?”
“I have a card but it is at home.”
“I need to see the card.”
At that point MM knew where the questions were coming from but MJ was completely confused. Apparently it had something to do with the IRGC. She should probably know by now but she had been always so disinterested in politics … They were taken to the room of shame and deportations and told to wait. So they waited. She was trying to comfort MM who kept telling her he was fine (he would admit later he wasn't which she knew anyway) visibly not appreciating her concerns. “He just wants me to miss my flight, I know it.” He recalled a similar situation many years before when he hadn't yet had Canadian citizenship.
MJ was stressed as usual but at the same time wanted to understand so she started reading: Due to the collapse of the Iran Nuclear Deal under Trump's reign in 2019, further sanctions were imposed on Iran and as a bonus, the IRGC, a branch of the military that had been formed during the 1979 revolution, was declared a terrorist organization. If you are unlucky enough to be a male Iranian citizen, you have to serve in the military and are randomly conscripted into the Iranian Army (ارتش), Police Forces (فراجا), or IRGC (سپاه). If you're lucky enough to have served in either of the first two (or bought it as part of a special program) then you're usually okay, well as okay as an Iranian can be. But you have to prove it.
“I need to see the card. But I think a photo would be sufficient.”
MM searched in vain for the photo in his phone, then he remembered that his father might have it. So he started calling to Tehran.
“You guys know that conscription is completely random.”
“We know that but this is the rule. There are stories about a man face-timing with his dying father because he couldn't go to see him …” The officer became talkative and somewhat nice. He meant the stories like this.
While MM was still trying to find a picture of the card in his phone and waiting for his father to call back, the officer began questioning MJ:
“What is your status in Canada? Why do you have a Canadian address in your ESTA application? Are you employed at the university?” But you know, this is not a story about her and she knew she would be fine. She may have made a few mistakes in her ESTA application but … these things are never a big deal. She was more worried about the prospect of spending three days in L.A. alone, without a car, at least this time MM had indicated her Airbnb account when booking …
“So what is going to happen now? I won't make it home in time.”
“Well … I tend to believe you …”
At that moment MM's father called to say he had found the photo. A supposed “IRGC expert” from another desk came to look at it, you know, the card written entirely in Persian, and they let them both go. Just in time to catch the plane.
Happy end, right? Not for everyone. I have a friend who was punished by being drafted into the IRGC for being an artist and queer. He basically cleaned toilets for two years. Recently he was supposed to attend a conference in New Orleans but couldn't go. There were rumors that the rules for involuntarily draftees might get eased but it hasn't happened and doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon.
1) I heard that there is another Czech-Iranian couple in Edmonton but this has not been confirmed to date.
2) Whenever she hears from someone “Wow, what a cute acceeeent! Where are you froooom?” (which happens at least once a week) she asks them to guess. Because yeah, what the hell. They usually guess Russia or, for the last few months, Ukraine. In one of the next posts, I will tell you why you should never ask people where they are from, at least not during the first hour of conversation. No, not even in Canada. Not even white people.
3) Not really. But everyone thinks they know enough.
4) A chapter from A. Aneesh. Neutral Accent: How Language, Labor, and Life Become Global. Durham: Duke University Press, 2015.

"This is a nice place." You say looking around the apartment. It was a small two bed one bath apartment. Maya and Butler didn't need any bigger than that since this was temporary until they could find a house. Paisley was still at the age that she sleeps in her parents room, so they didn't need three bedrooms at the moment but were looking for a house with that many bedrooms.
"I know it'll work for now we definitely want a yard but for now it's fine. We'll just show up at your house." Maya teases you.
"Do it the boys love having you around. Besides I love spending time with this little princess! And matty!" You say referring to the sleeping baby in your arms. "Well me and the boys should probably head to the airport to pick up Senior's brother."
"Oh he's coming in town?" She asks taking Presley from you.
"Yeah."
"You introducing him Chris?"
"Yep you think Butler can come play referee is Ben acts like... Well Ben." You joke.
"Maybe. Okay cya later. Boys time to go!" The boys hurried into the main living space.
———
"So when do I get to meet your new man?" Ben asks you as you start making dinner.
"Soon. I expect you to be on your best behavior no being an asshole to him Ben."
"It's Benji." The man says.
"Mhm." You say. He's thirty, you didn't understand why he still went by that. He could go be Ben, Benjamin, but he goes by Benji. It's still better than Benny though.
"I still think it's too soon, you should be focusing on my nephews."
"It's been two years Benji. Me and Senior both discussed what to do if one of us died. Move to boston, and move on at our own pace. Theres only 6 opinions that matter in mine and Chris' relationship, yours isn't one of them." You tell him as you put the food in the oven.
"Whatever. You were probably just using him for money anyway." You look at him and sigh.
"If I was using Senior for money I wouldn't still be putting up with your shit."
"I was just saying." He scoffs. "Probably just wanted a ride through life."
"Benjamin Richardson, I will kick you out of this house if you keep going. Cause I know the guy who is mooching off his parents isn't talking to me about wanting a ride through life." You argue.
"Mom?" Caspian walks in looking between you both, knowing he walked into something. "Do you mind if I go to the park to play basketball with my friend Grant?"
"No sweetie just be home for dinner, we're going to Chris' after dinner remember."
"Okay! Bye Uncle Benji."
"Bye champ."
"Bye sweetheart be safe." You kiss his forehead before he leaves. "Benji, I know you're having a hard time over his death but you can't control what I do."
"Alright, when's this guy coming over."
"Well we've been having weekly movie nights every Sunday this summer at his house so we're going over the after dinner."
"Okay."
"Benji... Give him a chance for me please."
"Fine." He nods.
"Here. Senior wrote everyone letters, Butler gave 'em to me this one is yours." You open a draw before handing him a piece of paper with his name on it.
"Thank you." He looks at the letter.
"Uncle Benji!!! Come play call of duty with us!" Jace yells from upstairs.
"Coming boys! I'll give Chris a shot. But only because the boys like him." He tells you before leaving. You sigh and sit down on one of the stools. You warned Chris and even offered to postpone them meeting until Thanksgiving but he denied. To be fair you were the one nervous for tonight while Chris was excited to meet more of your family.
——
Chris looks at the piece of paper before he reaches for it. It can't labeled it was just a plain white folded piece of paper. He wants to read it, there has to be something important in it for Butler to give it to him. He opens it not sure what to expect or why he was getting a letter from his girlfriend's late husband.
"My name is Caspian SR, which you probably knew. You're probably wondering why you're getting this letter. I have some advice for dating my wife. First of all, she's the best woman you'll ever meet, she's caring, funny, and the strongest woman I know. She's the best mother ever, and puts our boys ahead of herself. Please remind her she can put herself first sometimes. She loves home cooked meals over going out, and loves Romcoms. Never disrespect the boys, those kids are her whole world and you'll get tossed the second she notices. Now onto things you should know about the boys. Junior that boy is gonna do great things. He's a better person then I was at 12. If you need a way to bond with him, its definitely football, watching, playing, talking about, even going to his games. That's his favorite thing in the world, he's really good too, but I could be biased. I think he should pursue it but he wants to be like for some reason he's still young though. Go to some of his games for me please?"
Chris smiles at the way he talks about his son. He can tell the love Senior had for you and the kids just from what he's read so far. He will be keeping home cooked meals and football in mind. He looked back at the letter and begins to finish reading it.
"Jace is stubborn even at 7, he looks like me but acts just like his mom, you do not want to cross either of them. Your way in with him is video games and sports. Any sports he likes them all. Especially Baseball, he wants to go pro. Connor, he's still little buts he's kind hearted you know? He's just a great kid like his brother. He currently loves animals and cooking. Please take care of my family for me. - Richardson."
Nothing about his brother but it's still helpful. He'll also be able to find out what they like currently as they warm up to him. He already knew they liked anything to do with sports, every time he looks out his window there's a new ball in his backyard, not that he was complaining. Now to his real worry, getting Benjamin to like him. He wanted everyone in yours and the boys' life to like him cause he hopes to be a big part of your lives eventually.
The door bell rings, Juniper and Dodger runs past Chris, who was on the couch and to the door. Chris gets up and hurries to follow his daughter and dog. He opens the door smiling at you.
"Hey Sweetheart." He smiles, "hey boys, I have snacks ready we just have to make some popcorn."
"Yes!" Jace smiles.
"Do you have any candy?" Connor asks with giddy smile.
"Yep, I got chocolate and gummy bears, and you're favorite Sour patch kids!"
"You're the best!" Connor says as you all walk inside.
"I'll go make the popcorn, guys you want to help?" Caspian asks, the younger three kids nod before June leads the way to the kitchen. Chris looks at the man standing there, he has shoulder length brown hair. He's shorter than Chris by probably an inch and he looks annoyed that he's there.
"Chris this is my brother in law, Ben. Ben this is my boyfriend, Chris."
"It's Benji." Ben mutters but shakes the older man's hand.
"Hey man." Chris shakes his hand a smiles.
"Hi." Benjamin looks at him uninterested. You glared at your brother in law for acting childish.
"Crap!" Was exclaimed from the kitchen along with glass breaking. You and Chris looked at each other before hurrying into the kitchen Benji close behind.
"Jace stop dodger." Caspian says as he lifts June onto the counter. "Stay there." He tells Connor as Jace hurries to get Dodger out of the kitchen. Jace was far enough that he wasn't stuck around the pieces of glass.
"What happened?" Chris asked.
"I was trying to grab a cup but I knocked one out of the cabinet. Sorry." Connor looks down.
"It's fine bud." Chris assures. "Is anyone hurt?"
"I'm okay daddy!" June says with a smile.
"I'm fine." Connor says.
"So am I." Caspian assures.
"Where's Jace?" You ask.
"I told him to get Dodger out of the kitchen so he didn't hurt. I don't think Jace got hurt either." Caspian explain. "Can someone hand me a broom?"
"Yeah I'll go grab one." Chris says before leaves coming back with one. "Alright I'll clean it up." Caspian nods he stays in his spot though to make sure June doesn't fall off of the counter. His first instinct was to make sure she didn't step in glass. He would've been the same way with his brothers he just can't pick them up as easily, plus they weren't next to him like June was
"Okay." Caspian nods as you and Chris clean up the broken cup.
"I'm sorry." Connor repeats.
"You're fine Connor, I'm just glad no one got hurt. Please be more careful next time though." Chris says softly.
Once it was all cleaned up they grabbed drinks, and popcorn before going to the living room. All of the other snacks sat on the coffee table
"Alright what are we watching?"

hq boys as dads calling you while you're away bc your child wouldn't stop crying
characters: kuroo tetsuro, bokuto koutarou
warning(s): none, just fluff. kuroo is v father material aahh!!
a/n: this was sitting on my drafts for a while now. other characters coming soon 👀
Tumblr media
kuroo tetsuro
you were overseas for two days to attend a convention that your job required which meant leaving kuroo and your child
kuroo was admittedly and without a doubt, a really good father so when he told you not to worry about them, you left without any worries at all
kuroo knew everything - how to prepare milk and baby food, changing diapers, how to get them to sleep, how to stop their tantrums, basically everything
still you bugged him all the way to the airport to call if something were to happen or if he needed help with anything such as locating the diaper and milk powder
afterall, he was rarely on baby duty since his job required more of his time compared to yours but he has never failed to provide you and his son the time and affection
the first day went by smoothly and without a problem, that is until the next day. your son just wouldn't stop crying so he had to call you to calm him down
no matter what kuroo did, your son just wouldn't stop crying even when he was cradling him gently in his arms and rubbing his back. their child has been crying for almost an hour now, only getting louder and stronger despite his best efforts to calmly shush him or lull him to sleep.
the morning went by pretty fine; kuroo fed, bathed, and played with their son - even changed the diapers twice. their son seemed to be in a pretty good mood throughout the morning but apparently, babies get mood swings too, and that's when the crying started.
kuroo tried basically everything from trying to get their son to drink milk, to giving the pacifier, and humming baby songs he could think of but all his attempts failed. their son wasn't bored nor hungry and was definitely not sleepy so it was starting to worry kuroo.
"hey bud, you're scaring me now," kuroo cooed, softly pressing the back of his hand against their son's forehead but the temperature was fine. kuroo knew all the baby stuff without sweat, even the signals of what they needed but this was entirely different. it was only when then their son pointed to the picture of the three of you framed on the wall that kuroo got his answer. pressing a soft kiss against his son's temple, he whispered softly, "i know bud, i miss mommy too."
kuroo grabbed his phone from the couch and called you, chuckling when you instantly answered on the first ring with a hint of worry in your voice. "tetsu, what's wrong? are you both okay? should i get on the next flight?"
"relax kitten, we're fine. we just miss you."
"awe, i miss both my boys too."
"mama's on the phone bud." kuroo switched to loud speaker, smiling widely at their son who looked at him with wide, doe eyes upon hearing your voice. the crying eventually died down as you kept speaking through the phone with your cute, tiny baby voice until your son fell asleep in his arms.
"is he asleep?" you asked.
"yep. hey, you should use that baby voice often. it's cute," he teased, grinning ear to ear.
"shut up."
the rest of the afternoon was spent at a mall near the airport, buying toys and new clothes and stopping by for ice cream before waiting for you at the terminal.
"look bud, there's mommy!" kuroo crouched to level with their son, pointing at your figure from a distance. their son's eyes lit up when spotting you, giggling and reaching out his other hand that kuroo wasn't holding.
"awe, it's my two favorite boys! i missed you both so much!" you said sweetly, dropping your bags to hug your son.
"i missed you so much, love." you hugged kuroo tightly when he stood up only for him to hug you tighter, peppering kisses on your cheeks.
"missed you more, kitten," he said softly, pressing a light kiss to your lips before carrying your son. you really had nothing to worry about.
bokuto kotarou
you were a little bit worried about leaving bokuto and your child even if it was just for a couple of hours. you had to visit your parents in kyoto and dropby for groceries on the way home
it's not that you didn't trust him, you were just not quite sure if the house would be exactly the same as when you left knowing how bokuto and your child loved to play A LOT
you considered calling akaashi to babysit the two lmao
bokuto matched your child's energy so while you're incharge of all the serious baby duties, bokuto was incharge of playing and goofing around with your child while you rested
really, your child got their hyperactiveness from bo
you were also the one who dealt with the tantrums while bo assisted, so when bo was left to deal with your son's tantrum alone, he panicked and was about to cry himself because your son was crying and it made him sad :(
you left the house around 6 am after preparing breakfast for your husband and son as well as the other things that bokuto will need for the day. althought bokuto spent a lot of time with your child, it didn't always include the serious baby duties so you knew for sure if you hadn't displayed the diapers and vitamins on the counter in advance, he'd be flipping the house upside down searching for them.
you also left a note on the fridge that consisted of all the instructions and reminders to serve as a guide. you trusted bokuto, of course, but you really just didn't want to come home to a mess.
bokuto's arms snaked around your waist and squeezed you lightly in his hug, nuzzling his face at the crook of your neck. "can't you just take us with you?"
"i'd love to kou, but our son just recovered from a fever so it's best if he stays home for now."
he nodded, visibly frowning. you cupped his cheek to get him to look at you. "kou, baby, i'll be back before you know it."
bokuto pouted, looking at you with puppy dog eyes and it took everything in you not to cancel your plans. "call me if there's a problem, okay?" you kissed him goodbye and left.
with the note you left him, bokuto had no troubles throughout the morning routine even during bathtime. he would send you pictures and videos from time to time so you wouldn't have to worry, also because he loved sharing things with you.
bokuto loved playing with your son, loved seeing the adorable smile and hearing the soft giggles during their playtime even if it meant having to crawl on the carpet with his son on his back like a horse.
bokuto was filming him walking around with a huge smile on his face, "come to dada, little guy." your son just recently learned how to walk on their own so their steps were still unstable and wobbly and this resulted to your son tripping on his own feet.
bokuto could shit his pants right now, quickly fumbling to his now crying son to comfort him.
"hey little guy, it's okay you're good, dada's here now." he's whispering comforting words while gently rubbing on their back but the cries only got worse, the tears streaming down the little guy's face nonstop and this made bokuto's heart sink, feeling his own tears pool in his eyes. "shh i'm sorry, i'm sorry... you're okay, i gotchu."
his hands hesitantly reached out hug your son, so fragile it scared bokuto. he was calling you now and thank god you answered right away.
"kou?"
"he won't stop crying and i don't know what to do, can you come home now please? i think i just made our son hate me."
you sighed, "he doesn't hate you, kou. can you tell me what happened?"
"i was taking a video of him while he walked around but then he tripped and i swear i was watching over him! he won't stop crying, oh god i'm gonna cry too."
"did he hit his head? is he seriously hurt anywhere?"
"no," bokuto mumbled and you sighed in relief.
"okay that's good. it'll be fine babe, kids fall sometimes, okay? especially at this stage where they're learning how to walk. just carry him around for a while and he'll eventually ca-"
"what if i drop him?! should i ask akaashi to come over??" he pressed the phone between his ear and shoulder, gently and carefully lifting his son from the ground, pressing him close to his chest despite being nervous.
"you won't drop him kou, i'll punch you if you do, and no, do not call keiji. you got this, babe, you're his dad and he needs you not his uncle."
it took a while to convince bokuto that he was going to be find and to get off the phone so he can start comforting your son. bokuto did as you said, cradling him in his arms while he walked around the house and pointing to the pictures on the wall until your son finally calmed down. the only problem was that his son would start crying again whenever he attempted to bring him down, tiny hands clinging around his neck and onto his shirt.
you arrived home around 8 pm, announcing your arrival only to be met with silence at the door.
"kou?"
your eyes softened as soon as you found him asleep on the couch with your son on top of his chest, his strong arms wrapped securely around the tiny human being. you quietly kneel beside the couch, stroking bokuto's hair which slowly woke him up.
"i'm home." you smiled.
bokuto brought a finger to his lips and you pressed your lips together, taking your son away from his arms so you can tuck him in for the night.
"i'm sooo tired," bokuto whined, resting his head on top of your chest and cuddling close to you as soon as you joined him in bed. "it's my turn to be baby."
you snorted, bokuto's soft snores filling the quiet room in just a few seconds. "goodnight baby."

Away Games - MSBY Black Jackals
A/N: WOW it feels so so long since i’ve done an HC i kinda feel like i forgot how to :( ahhh im sorry this one sucks LOL but im feeling a bit burned out & this brought me a lil comfort so i hope it brings some for u too :)
Tumblr media
Bokuto
Shamelessly facetiming you every possible second.
He’s not terribly upset to be away, to be honest, because he’s doing what he loves, but a huge part of him still misses you.
So he settles for the next best thing
And it doesn’t matter what you’re doing; if you’re at work, if you’re out shopping, if you’re sitting on the toilet – Bokuto will blow up your phone until you answer.
“What took you so long to answer?” “Kou, I was on the toilet.” “No way! Me too! Soulmates <3”
He’s always telling you stories about the dumb things that go on during practice, he complains about how his shoulder’s been feeling a little tense lately, and the food at the hotel reminds of the food they used to serve at Fukurodani
But he always wants to hear about your day too. He asks if your coworker is still being a jerk, he wonders if you managed to try the new drink at the café you mentioned the other day, and he reminds you that he’s coming back in a couple days, so make sure you remember to pick him up from the airport!
When he can’t facetime, he’s sending you videos; videos of the guys goofing off at practice, videos of him working out, videos of behind the scene interviews.
He’s sad you don’t get to be there with him but he does everything he can to share his experiences with you anyway
Bokuto even started his own personal tradition during every away game
If MSBY wins, he sends flowers to your door step.
If MSBY loses, he still sends you flowers anyway because he just wants you to know that he’s thinking of you always
Tumblr media
Atsumu
He doesn’t want to admit it, but Atsumu goes into emo mode whenever he’s away.
When you ask him how he’s doing, he’ll always tell you that he’s fine
But the pictures Bokuto and Hinata sent you of Atsumu crying into his protein shake tell you a different story.
You try to make him feel better by sending him tiktoks and memes, and it works for a second, until he sees a mug in the tiktok that looks JUST like the mug you got for him when you first started dating, and now all he’s thinking about is how he wants go back home and drink his coffee from that mug, not the cheap paper ones from his hotel room and god, can the days go by any slower?
talk about dramatic
But you can never stand to see Atsumu so down
And you don’t do this every single time, but when MSBY loses and Sakusa was the one to text you a video of Atsumu staring longingly out his hotel window, you asked him what city their next game was going to be in, and bought yourself a plane ticket there.
You don’t want to spoil Atsumu like this. You really don’t, and you usually won’t
But when you walk into the gym, Atsumu’s eyes land on you, and his entire face lights up, his whole demeanor changes, he’s standing a little taller, his smile a little wider, and all of a sudden, the whole room just felt so much brighter.
He’s in the middle of a pre-game interview, and all of a sudden his words trail off and the interviewer’s like “Miya-san? You were saying?”
But he can’t wait any more, so he’ll excuse himself, and all cameras are on him when he scoops you up from the floor and plant kisses all over your face.
You don’t always spoil Atsumu like this, but when he points at you after scoring his third service ace in a row, you know you’ve done a good thing
Tumblr media
Sakusa
grumpycat.jpg
Sakusa doesn’t tell you he misses you because he doesn’t really think he does? It’s normal for professional athletes to spend time away from their s/o, right? This was to be expected, Sakusa knew you guys would have to spend some time apart, he was prepared for this.
Still, irritation floods through him when he wakes up to a shrill alarm instead of your sweet voice.
He snaps at Bokuto when he has to eat the team’s provided lunch, and not the lunch you make and pack for him.
He’s particularly cranky when his uniform was wrinkled on game day, and you weren’t there with your emergency Wrinkle-Release Spray
He doesn’t directly say ‘I miss you’ but you hear it in his words anyway.
When he complains about the hotel’s mattress and how it’s “nothing compared to our bed at home” you know that he feels your absence.
“The food here makes me want to gag, all I want is your tempura”
“My skin feels so raw from the scratchy towels; the towels you bought us feel much softer.”
“Babe, how’d you manage to make all my stuff fit in my luggage? I can’t pack it the way you do.”
Sakusa most likely won’t blow up your phone, but he always makes sure to send you a good morning and good night text
He doesn’t buy you flowers, but when he gets home, he hands you a large bag without saying anything.
“What’s all this?” you grunt, cause damn that bag was heavy.
But Sakusa was shrugged. “Souvenirs. I thought you’d like them.”
And you squeal in excitement, pulling him to sit down on the same couch that he’s been thinking of for weeks, a smile on his face as he watches you sift through all the little knick knacks and presents that reminded him of you.
Tumblr media
Hinata
EXCITED BOY
He’s constantly texting you and checking in, even when he doesn’t have to
☀️Shoyo☀️(6:58am): We just got to the gym where they’re letting us practice!
☀️Shoyo☀️(7:01am): I’m about to go into the locker room and change now
☀️Shoyo☀️(7:05am): Whoops I think I made the wrong turn.
☀️Shoyo☀️(7:07am): Whoa, this gym is pretty big; I wonder what other sports they could use it for?
☀️Shoyo☀️(7:15am): Wait, I can’t find my way back
☀️Shoyo☀️(7:30am): Babe, help
He doesn’t facetime you like Bokuto, but he is blowing up your phone just the same.
He misses you of course, that’s a given, but to be honest he mostly does it because he doesn’t want YOU to miss HIM.
Maybe that’s the wrong way to put it; he wants you to miss him but he doesn’t want to ever make you feel lonely.
He knows that feeling so well :( he never wants to be the cause of your loneliness. And if he had to pick between being a persistent man or an aloof man, then Hinata will choose persistence five hundred times over.
Hinata has an incredible talent of being able to make you smile and laugh, even if it’s simply through a screen, from hundreds of miles away.
Even though his career and ever-changing schedule can make things a little extra challenging, when you see him play on TV, watch as the crowd cheers and hollers for Hinata, listen to the way the commentators describe his insane plays, and you realize you don’t mind having to share Hinata with the world
Because when he stares directly into the camera and smiling while he holds both hands over his heart, you know this gesture was meant only for you.

Back Home with a Trophy & a Baby- Ben Chilwell
Tumblr media
It was the week of the champions final, Ben was busy with training and some interviews. But in his free time at night, he would lie next to me and always lay his head on my growing belly and talk sweet words to our baby.
I was 8 months pregnant, and we still didn't know what sex our baby was. We wanted it to be a surprise, even though we were dying to know. When the team reached the Champions League final and found out that it would be played in Porto. Ben and I started having little arguments on whether or not I should attend the final. Due to my condition, I was not recommended to get on a plane, especially when you are at a stage where the baby could be born at any moment.
The day before he left we had another little talk. We still hadn't decided if I would attend the game or not. Although the doctor had given us green light for me to attend the game because everything was under control and it wasn't a long flight. According to him, the baby was going to stay in my belly for a couple more weeks, but Ben wasn't so sure. He feared that maybe I would start having contractions during the flight or, worse, that the baby would want to be born while he was at the game.
I was in the kitchen making dinner when he got home.
"I think you should stay," Ben said, placing a flight ticket and the game pass over the table. "I will be more relaxed if you stay, but I will also feel at ease knowing that you are in the stands supporting me, so... I let it up to you".
I walked and stood in front of him, placing my arms around his neck and playing with his hair. I looked him in the eyes and said
"I'm going to be fine, I mean we're going to be fine." I took his hand and placed it on my belly so he could feel the baby move.
Ben smiled and kissed me on the forehead.
"I know, I just can't help but worry about you two".
"How would you feel if I thought about it over the next few days, and let you know what I've decided?"
"I'm fine with that." He smiled and then said, "what's that smell?"
"Oh, I made your favorite food because I was craving it," He laughed and walked over to the stove to serve himself a plate.
"Let's have dinner then"
In the morning, Ben got up early for a final training session at Cobham before leaving for Portugal.
"Please, let me know what you decide Y/N, whether you go or stay¨ Ben said, taking his things and placing them in the back of the car.
I was in my pajamas standing in the door frame leading to our garage watching his movements. It was very early, but I had to say goodbye to him and wish him good luck because, whether I was going or not, it was very likely that I would see him after the game.
"We're staying, so don't worry. The baby and I want you to stay focused." Ben came over to me and kneeled, placing his hands and forehead on my belly.
"I'm going to get that win and bring that trophy home so when you grow up I can tell you about that great day."
Pregnancy hormones and Ben's words made me cry. He stood up and looked me in the eyes.
"I know I'm going to see you in a couple of days, but I don't want to leave without saying thank you"
"Thank you for what?" I asked, confused with my voice shaking from crying.
"For making me the luckiest man alive, because you are an extraordinary woman who is doing a great job with our baby. I can't wait to have him or her in our arms."Ben placed his hands on my cheeks and put his forehead on mine, "I love you so much Y/N, thank you for being my support, I don't know what I would do without you"
"I love you too Ben, thank you for all you have done for us, and for showing us not to give up and work on our dreams, I know you are a great team and you are going to win. I don't need to wish you good luck, because that victory is already yours." I gave him a soft and deep kiss. Whenever Ben plays away I get a little touchy, even though I know he'll be back in a day or two.
We hugged one more time before he got in the car and drove away.
I walked into the house and saw the tickets on the table. Even when I had told Ben that I would stay because I didn't want to worry him and needed him to keep the promise he had made to our baby before he left. I told the Footballer a little white lie.
The next day, I got dressed in comfortable clothes, grabbed my suitcase, and called an Uber to take me to the airport.
As we took off, I remembered that I hadn't told Ben about my change of plans. After a couple of hours, we landed, everything under control and the baby still in my belly. It was a safe and quiet flight and I slept through it. On the way to the hotel, I was thinking about how to communicate to Ben that I was not in London but Porto.
After checking into the hotel and settling into my room, I sent a message to Ben.
Y/N Babe, I need to tell u smth
He replied almost immediately.
Benjamin Please don't tell me the baby is born
I laughed at his worries.
Y/N Nop, baby still on my belly
Benjamin Phew! then what's it?
Y/N You won't believe me, but we're here
Benjamin Here? where? He didn't understand
Y/N Porto.
I replied straight to the point.
It's been 5 minutes since I told him I was in Portugal and he still doesn't answer my message. I don't know whether to worry. Maybe he got annoyed. A couple of minutes later my cell phone showed an incoming call from Ben, and as soon as I answered I heard his voice.
"It was that a joke y/n? because if it was..." I interrupted him.
"It wasn't a joke Ben, I'm here in Portugal. I'm at the hotel"
"Oh my god! you're such a liar, why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I changed my mind at the last minute, everything went so fast that I forgot to tell you."
"I can't believe you did it... "
"Are you mad at me?" I asked out of the blue. I couldn't deal with the feeling of guilt for not telling him.
"What! no, I'm not mad. I'm actually glad you're here."
We kept talking for a little longer until we had to end the call because of his pre-match duties.
It's Saturday morning, game day. I sent a text to Ben wishing him good luck and that I would see him later to celebrate. Later I was already in the stands waiting for the game to start. The opening ceremony gave me goosebumps. It was unbelievable. I was glad I was at the game and didn't miss this special day; because I couldn't have lived knowing how everyone was talking about this special day and I didn't get to see it.
The teams took to the field and lined up in front of the sideline for the anthem once again. I noticed that Chelsea's number 21 was discreetly looking for me. When he found me, he signaled to let me know he had seen me. The signal was to run his hand through his hair, so the fans wouldn't go looking for the person he had waved at. Which made it a special moment between us.
The stadium erupted in cheers and celebrations when Kai scored the goal that gave us the lead. I screamed and celebrated as I had never done before. We were winning. A few minutes before the end of the first half, I felt a liquid running down my legs, had I peed?
In the bathroom, while wiping myself, I realized that it wasn't pee, but that my water had broken. I tried to stay calm and not panic; there was still halftime left to play. I took a deep breath, adjusted my dress, and went back to the stands.
The referee added 7 minutes. My nerves were clutching my stomach, plus the baby was also nervous because I could feel it moving. When the ref blew the final whistle I let out the breath I didn't know I was holding, it was the longest 7 minutes of my life.
Everyone in the stands was celebrating, the boys and Ben were hugging each other. They couldn't believe it. I was so happy celebrating and watching the awards that for a moment I forgot my water had broken. It was a little pain that reminded me that the baby could be born at any moment.
When they allowed the families to enter the field, Ben came for me. The huge smile on his face and the medal around his neck made me emotional. As soon as he was near we hugged and both burst into tears. I was so proud of him, I still couldn't believe he was Champion of Europe.
"You did it!" I told him wiping the tears that were running down his cheeks "I told you you would be a champion, I am so proud of you".
"I still can't believe it, I'm over the moon," he smiled and kissed my temple "Thank you! Thank you for coming and being here with me"
"I couldn't miss this day for anything in the world"
"I'm glad you didn't miss it"
We continued celebrating until the guys went back to the locker room to get ready for the celebration party.
We had just arrived at the place when I started to feel stronger pains. I didn't want Ben to miss the party, so I tried to mask them with the breathing exercises I had been taught in my prenatal classes. But I couldn't take it anymore and doubled over in pain.
"Babe, you okay?" Ben asked, kneeling next to me. I shook my head.
"I think the baby is coming," I said, inhaling and exhaling. "at halftime my water broke".
"What? Why didn't you tell me before?" his voice sounded worried.
"Because... at that moment... it didn't hurt." my voice cracked in pain.
"We have to go to a hospital" he took out his cellphone and asked for an Uber to the nearest hospital.
When we arrived, the nurses attended to me quickly and took me to a room. They asked me a couple of questions, luckily they spoke English. Ben filled out the paperwork for my admission, while we waited for the doctor. As soon as he came in and checked me over and said.
"This baby is ready" what! but it was still a couple of weeks before I was due. "Get things ready for delivery and call the pediatrician."
All the nurses started moving quickly and I started to freak out.
"Calm down," Ben said, taking my hand and kissing me "It's going to be okay, I'm with you."
"Okay," the doctor said, "on my signal, you're going to push as hard as you can, okay?", I nodded.
"You can do it, sweetie, now it's your turn to bring our trophy into the world."
"Now!" the doctor said.
After pushing three or four times, I heard our baby cry.
"Congratulations! It's a boy," the doctor said. "Do you want to cut the umbilical cord?" he asked, looking at Ben, and Ben nodded. A nurse handed Ben a pair of scissors. Watching him cut the cord was the most beautiful moment.
As soon as it was cleaned up, they took the baby away to check that he was healthy and strong because he had been born a couple of weeks earlier. strong because he had been born a couple of weeks before.
"You did great Y/N," Ben said, kissing my lips "he is going to be fine".
Ben texted our family and the lads at Chelsea to let them know that everything had gone well and that the baby was healthy.
A couple of hours later a nurse came in with our little boy in her arms and handed him to me.
I couldn't believe that this little human being had come out of me.
"Look at him, he is as handsome as his daddy," said Ben next to me, I let out a little laugh.
"I know, he's going to be a little heartbreaker."
"I don't know which one of you two I should thank, but you have certainly made this day unforgettable" Ben's eyes were covered with a couple of tears, he was over the moon, "I'm a double champion, I won a title and a baby".
"Who knew you were going to come home with a trophy and a baby," I laughed.
Our baby was still very small but I did not doubt that he was a clone of Ben.
Since everything was under control and he was a healthy baby, the next day they let us go. So our little guy came out dressed in a Chelsea onesie that the team sent us, plus other essentials for Ben and I that we didn't have because it was all unexpected. They also sent us the baby seat so we could take him home.
We didn't know if taking a newborn on a plane was a good idea, but we couldn't stay longer in Portugal. Luckily, the doctor said there was no problem, as our baby was healthy and could handle a couple of hours on the plane. At the hospital they helped us with the paperwork so we didn't have any problems when we arrived in London.
I was glad we were going back to London with the rest of the team because then Ben could still celebrate with them. The kids and families watching us were excited, all wanting to meet little Ben.
"Congratulations, Dad," Mason said as soon as he saw his teammate.
"Thanks, buddy," they hugged. "Would you like to be his godfather?"
Mason smiled and said.
"No need to ask."
When we found out I was pregnant, we spent more time wondering who was going to be our baby's godfather rather than thinking about names. We both agreed it would be Mason since he was a close friend of both of ours.
As soon as we landed we went straight home. We wanted to rest and assimilate everything that had happened over the weekend. I was glad that our baby was born early because Ben was able to be present at the birth and enjoy our boy for a couple of days before he left for his international duties.

Santiago ‘Pope’ Garcia x Reader w/ nickname
Tumblr media
Chapter 1- Call Signs
Chapter 2
Summary:You go out on a Friday night with your buddies, and meet Santiago ‘Pope’ Garcia for the first time Rated M for Mature themes, but would prefer the fic stayed 18+ since it gets a little spicy later 👌
AN: Hello everyone! This is my very first fanfic I’m posting, and I hope it’s up to par 😅 I’ve been delaying posting it for so long but I’m so excited to finally get this posted and starting this journey.
TW! Alcohol, Slight Violence. Please let me know if I need to add anything else!
It was just another Friday at the bar after a dull day at work. Your friend Will invited you out for drinks with him and a couple of his buddies to celebrate a friend coming home.
“Where is this guy anyway, aren’t we supposed to be celebrating him?” You ask, frustrated by the fact the person they were celebrating was nearly an hour late.
“Pope’s always late, he runs on his own time. But he’ll be here.” Will took another sip of his beer before glancing toward the door.
“He better be, I can’t stay late. I have to go back home to Maria, I promised her I’d help with the baby after I got back tonight.” Retorted Frankie.
“Speak of the devil.”
Up walked a man with curly hair and sun kissed skin. He's undoubtedly handsome, smiling before he claps a hand on Frankie’s shoulder.
“What’s up cabróns? Sorry I’m late, there was traffic coming from the airport and then there was this girl out in the parking lot who had this ass that-“
“Ah-hem.” You clear your throat, hoping to cut off whatever vulgar story he was about to tell.
“Pope this is Hail. We met through the VA, thought I’d invite her out with us.”
“Hail? Cute, what’s that short for, Hailey?” He pours himself a mug of beer, barely looking your way.
“Hail Mary.”
“That’s a hell of a name. Parents were religious huh?”
Benny snickers and Frankie leans back, preparing for the shitshow to unfold.
“Call sign. Hail Mary, as in the prayer most people say before they’re about to die; A last ditch effort. For a man whose nickname is Pope, seems like you’d know better”
“Oh baby, people call me Pope because I bring them closer to god, whether it’s out in the field or in bed.” He side eyes Benny and they fist bump behind your head.
“Classy.” You roll your eyes and look over to Will who pinches the bridge of his nose and mouths 'sorry' over to you.
“Anyways- glad to have you back safe man, but I really gotta go. Wife’s gonna kill me if I don’t help with the baby like I promised.” Frankie fixes his hat and slaps Pope on the back before walking out.
“Yeah man me too, I’ve got my fight tomorrow and I already got too drunk waiting for you. You gotta come though!” Benny says as he wobbles standing up.
Will quickly stands after and steadies him propping him up on his shoulder. “I better drive Benny home, what about you Hail? You need a ride?”
“I’m alright, I’ll probably stay a little longer. I need to decompress from work.”
“Whatever works for you darlin, text me to let me know when you get home safe.” He says goodbye and shakes Pope’s hand before walking away with his brother.
“And yous better be coming to my match tomorrow!! I need my Hail Mary!!” Benny yelled with his head flopping back and forth.
“I’ll be there Benny.” You punch his ass and send them off, leaving you entirely alone with the menace of a man you’ve just met.
“So uh— you and the Miller brothers seem close.” Pope eyes you up and down, clearly trying to figure out what he’s missed while he was god knows where.
“Sure. Like Will said, we met through the VA. We’ve been pretty close since then.”
“I take it you’re a vet then, with your call sign and all?”
Was he actually trying to get to know you? “No, my dad served. 20 years in the Marine Corps, I just drive him to the meetings. He tried dragging me in one day to set me up with Will.”
“So you two are together then?” He looked up quizzically.
“Ha! If he’s interested he sure doesn’t show it. Plus I don’t think he’s really my type.”
“What is your type then?” Pope raises an eyebrow and a wide grin spreads across his face.
“Definitely not a man some of whose first words around me were ‘there was a girl who had this ass’”
“So you don’t like me because I appreciate the female form?”
“Ha! I don’t like you because you make assumptions. Like how you just assumed that you could get me to go home with you.”
“I’m offended you think so lowly of me Princesa, and how are you so sure I want to you to sleep with me?”
“Don’t call me Princesa, and because if you didn’t want to— you’d be off chasing that girl with the ass down. But you’re here, talking to me about if I’m taken and what my type is. Now if you excuse me, I’m going home.” You gulp down the rest of your beer before grabbing your purse and speed walking to the door.
Pope rushes through the crowds and grabs your arm before you raise it to hail a taxi. You break from his grasp and slam your palm into his chest before realizing it was him.
“Agh! So you’re not all bark after all.” He rubs his shoulder and winces. “Listen, I truly am sorry for this bad first impression. But I don’t think Will would be happy with me if I didn’t at least offer you a ride home in your inebriated state.”
You roll you eyes before you look in your purse and realize all your cash went toward tipping the bartender; You sigh and toss your head back in defeat. “Fine. But you’re not coming in for a nightcap.”
He leads you to his Jeep and you buckle yourself in as he pulls out of the bar parking. You punch your address into his GPS and lean your head against the cool window as the music plays softly. The alcohol hits you all at once like a tidal wave, and your head starts to spin.
You’re thankful the ride home is quiet, and even more so when the car comes to a stop. The car door opens letting the fresh night air hits your face waking you slightly.
“Can I at least walk you to your door?” Says Pope, but this time his tone is different. It’s not assertive or defensive, almost like he cares you get home safe. And he has this look on his face, what is that look? You’re too drunk to tell.
"That would be great, actually." He walks beside you, careful not to touch you unless you expressly needed help. You were doing better than expected, swaying slightly and bumping arms as you walked side by side. You were about to send Pope off, all up until you came to foot of the stairwell.
“Shit. You can go, really I’ll be fine. You’ll be here all night watching me climb these stupid things. Without an ounce of of dignity, I may add.”
He chuckled as you planted your palms on the stairs and began to crawl up them like an overgrown toddler.
“I have all night to help you up the stairs Hail, but I’ll have to touch you. If that’s ok?”
Why did those words send fire through your cheeks? ‘But I’ll have to touch you.’ You quietly nod your head in defeat and feel two strong arms lift you from under your knees and behind your back. You instinctively wrap your arms around his neck and press your head to his chest. The world is spinning and you’re doing anything to anchor yourself, even if it’s to him.
You turn your head and shut your eyes, taking deep even breaths into his chest doing everything in your power to calm yourself. ‘Focus’, you tell yourself. Focus on literally anything but the spinning. You take another deep breath, but this time you take a second to appreciate the scent of Pope’s cologne. It smells expensive, but sooo nice. You hear his heart beating, or—wait. Is it yours? Your mind continues to wander further as footsteps echo off the stairwell. His arms feel so nice, maybe you could invite him… No, you decide. You won’t just be another drunken conquest.
You reach the second floor of your apartment complex and tell him your door number. He steadily places you down, and keeps a steady hand on your back as you dig out your keys. You open the door and catch yourself on the frame turning yourself to face Pope.
“Thank you for taking me home, and for carrying me up the stairs. This is so embarrassing, I swear this never happens.”
“Shh, it’s alright Princesa. Drink some water and get some rest, I’ll see you tomorrow at Benny’s match. I’ll bring my best manners, and hopefully we can forget about today.” He gets you a glass of water and places it next to your couch where you ungracefully plopped yourself down.
“Mmhh. Pope?” You reach, as if trying to reach him without knowing where his is.
“Santiago. My real name is Santiago, but you can call me Santi if you want.”
Your brain is far gone, blacked out in a half asleep state with no filter attached to your mouth. “Well then Santiago, thank you again for bringing me home. Sorry it wasn’t in the context you wanted. Next time if you want it to go more smoothly, ask me to dinner. You smell too good to say no.”
He chuckles and looks at you with a soft expression before locking your door behind him as he makes his way back to his car. For the rest of the night, he replays the way you said his name in his head and makes a mental note to wear the same cologne again tomorrow night.

Genre: local!Yuta x tourist!reader (gender neutral), fluff, a dash of angst
Warnings: none
Word count: 1.9k
Plot: You went on a solo trip to Japan after your friend backed out, despite the fact that you barely knew Japanese as you were relying on your friend to be your translator. Thankfully, a local boy helped you out with his limited vocabulary in English.
A/N: in loving memory of my japan trip that got cancelled last year (eff you covid!!) Please let me know if there are any issues with the gender-neutral assignment.
gif: mine
- ❀ -
“I’m really so so sorry, Y/N. I feel so bad,” Aeri said over the phone.
“It’s okay. I’ll be fine. And I’m always down for a challenge.”
Aeri being the one who planned the trip was upset that her boss decided to be rude and have her come in for work, stressing about her presence being needed to handle a very important client. “I swear, I would have handed my resignation letter if it weren’t for the good pay.”
You rolled your eyes at her words. “Don’t say that. I’m sure we can go again together in the future.”
“Yeah, but are you really okay going alone? You don’t even know any Japanese except for like four words or something.”
She was right. You had only picked up a few words from the handful of anime shows you watched, not to mention that you knew nothing on how to read any of the writing systems. “I have the translator ready on my phone. I should be fine.” Though your confidence wavered the last second before hearing the boarding announcement of your flight, you tried to remain strong and think that everything would all work out. “It’s time for me to go now. I’ll text you when I get there.”
- ❀ -
[Memory one]
You let out a long sigh as you stared at the foreign characters on the menu board, never learning any of the Japanese writing systems. The lady owner patiently waited for you to give her your order.
“I… I don’t know,” you muttered, your head hanging low. Anything would do as long as it filled your stomach and was an authentic local specialty.
“Um hello?”
You heard from behind you. Turning around, you found a boy giving you a shy look. “Oh hi,” you politely greeted back with a confused look.
He shifted on his feet. “I uh... you help?” he offered with an unsure tone as he struggled a bit with his broken English.
“You want to help me?”
He nodded.
You smiled gratefully. “Thank you so much! I just want anything good and will add to my experience here.”
“Good?” The boy picked up and said, “I...” and lost his words before pointing at him and then at the owner.
“Oh, you want to order for me?”
He hesitated but nodded eventually when hearing ‘for me.’ “Yes.” The boy turned to the lady, placing an order with two fingers held up. The lady smiled and quickly got to work preparing the round fried food, and soon enough handed two plates of takoyaki to each of you.
You thanked her and took a bit of it with your chopsticks, eyes going wide with the flavour bursting in your mouth. “Woah! This is really good!” you beamed happily at him. “Thank you so much! And oh, I almost forgot. I’m Y/N,” you introduced yourself with a wide grin.
He mirrored it back, making him look like an angel with his healing smile. “I Yuta.”
- ❀ -
[Memory two]
“So cool,” you uttered under your breath as your eyes wandered around the vast array of Japanese sandals on the walls.
Too busy deciding which style to go for, you didn’t hear another customer enter the small traditional shop until they spoke your name.
“Y/N?” The voice was familiar, and you twirled around to see Yuta’s smile grow, relieved that he guessed you right.
“Oh! Yuta!” you smiled back. “It’s nice to see you again.”
He nodded in agreement. “Yes. How... are you?”
“I’m great, except...” your eyes traveled back to the wall.
His face fell slightly in worry. “What wrong?”
You shook your head. “Nothing bad. I just don’t know which pair to buy. They all look so good,” you pointed to the variety of sandals.
He hummed and asked, “Can I help?”
You blinked at him. “You want to?” An opinion from the local cute boy was definitely something you’d be down for.
His pearly whites were on full display as he nodded eagerly. “Yes.”
- ❀ -
[Memory three]
Just as your eyes were fixed on observing the cute little souvenirs on the shelves, you heard a series of loud knocks on the window and you jumped, being startled greatly by it. You looked out the window and found a familiar Japanese boy peeking into the shop, laughing happily when he caught your attention. He backed off to make his way into the shop.
“Yuta, you scared me there,” you laughed it off.
He sheepishly apologized. “Sorry.”
Shaking your head, you said “It’s okay. But it’s nice to see you, once again.”
He nodded and was lost in his thoughts for a moment. “Um Y/N?”
“Yes?”
“You alone?”
You nodded. “Yeah, my friend couldn’t come, and I really wanted to explore Japan. So I came alone.”
He took in your words, his brain on full gear to process them. “Can I help?”
“Help? Like how?”
He pointed at himself. “I... uh travel... you...”
It took you a few seconds before you were able to grasp his thought. “Do you want to be my tour guide and show me around here?”
“Ah! Yes. Your tour guide,” he beamed excitedly like a little child who learned a new word.
That sounded like a great idea. While you had the itinerary that you and your friend prepared, you weren’t dead set on doing everything list there as long as you were able to enjoy your time and explore to your heart’s content. After all, you were going to come back anyway with your friend in the future. And a plus point with having Yuta as a guide, you wouldn’t be struggling with your limited Japanese ability.
You nodded, your lips curling up joyfully. “I’d love that.”
- ❀ -
[Memory four]
“Yuta? Where’s-”
You had probably asked the Japanese boy a million things by now when shopping inside the variety store. Before Yuta became your traveling buddy, you had to rely on capturing the Japanese writings on your phone and have the texts translated via an app. Not to mention having to stroll down the aisles endlessly looking for a particular thing.
He showed you the ramen cups of interest as well as recommended some face masks, cleansing tissues, and sweet treats, especially matcha flavoured. “This good,” he pointed out.
You hummed curiously and put them all in your basket. “Thanks, Yuta. You’re a lifesaver.”
His ears perked up at the thought of him ‘saving your life’ and smiled proudly.
- ❀ -
[Memory five]
“You sure you’re doing it right?” you asked worriedly.
Getting lost in Japan was not on your to-do list. But it was fine to as long as you weren’t alone.
Yuta was trying to figure out how to get the tickets printed at the Kyoto Station. “Long time,” he chuckled nervously.
Going around Kyoto was apparently something he hadn’t done in a while being an Osaka man. You shrugged, “Looks like this will be an experience for both of us,” you joked.
He managed to have gotten the right tickets and you two sat in the train side by side. “Kyoto pretty,” he commented. “Very good,” he added with thumbs up.
The train began moving and you by the window made sure to pay attention to the scenery.
“Wow! The cherry blossoms are so beautiful under the blue sky,” you chatted cheerfully. “And those houses look so pretty,” you gushed, getting anime vibes from how neighbourhoods looked in them.
Yuta watched you getting excited over the sceneries, and was pleased to show you something that wasn’t on your itinerary in the first place.
- ❀ -
[Memory six]
Yuta watched you closely as you licked the matcha soft serve in hand.
You let the cold cream swirl around your tongue and hummed. “Wow, this is nice!”
He beamed, squealing as he clapped his hands from the happiness. “Yes,” he exclaimed. “My favourite,” he pointed to your cone.
The cream got stuck in your throat and you choked a little. His eyes grew concerned and asked, “You okay?”
“Yeah yeah, don’t worry. It’s just... you look so cute when you get happy like that,” you spoke a little shy.
He blushed deeply and looked away, a smile threatening to tug at his lips from hearing you call him cute.
- ❀ -
[Memory seven]
Ferris wheel.
The perfect way to end your trip by looking out into the nighttime view of Yuta’s hometown.
He sat across from you as you curiously looked at every lighting in the city. “Wow, it’s all so really beautiful, Yuta,” you breathed out.
His smile wasn’t his usual one. It was more forced, almost sad and you noticed it.
“What’s wrong?”
He shook out of his thoughts and said, “Nothing. Um... you like Japan?”
A fond smile took over your features. “Yes, very much. It’s all thanks to you, Yuta.” Your heart started aching at the memories made during your trip. If it weren’t for him, you would have struggled to get through with the littlest things.
He hummed and gave you a courteous smile before fixing his eyes out the transparent windows of the cart, silently willing himself to not tear up in front of you.
- ❀ -
[Memory eight]
Tears threatened to spill out of your eyes as you became emotional and super grateful standing in front of your personal Japan tour guide for one last time at the airport.
“Thank you so much for all your help, Yuta. It was really nice meeting you,” you smiled sorrowfully. Truth being told, you were sad that you had to say goodbye to an amazing friend made on your beautiful journey. “Let’s keep in touch. You have my contact, right?”
He nodded. “Yes. Um Y/N?”
“Yeah?”
Yuta dug his hand inside his pocket and pulled out a cherry blossom keychain. “For you,” he said, holding it out for to take.
You were speechless, not expecting a gift from him. “For me? Why?”
He was quiet for a moment before speaking up. “I like you.” His confession caught you by surprise. “I hope you come back. I... I hope we still talk...” he trailed off, doubting himself if he said the right thing at the wrong time, considering it was minutes before you’d have to catch your flight.
Slowly, your head nodded to his words, confirming them all. “We will. We will keep in touch, I’ll come back again. And I like you too,” you spoke sincerely with soft eyes.
- ❀ -
You reminisced the beautiful memories made in Japan with Yuta. It had been almost a year and the two of you were in frequent touch, talking about anything and everything in your video calls. You even learned some Japanese while he worked on improving his English.
While your eyes were focused on glancing at all the people sitting in the cafe, the door chimed open and in walked the Japanese boy that you had been waiting forever to see again.
He spotted you immediately and made a straight beeline towards you. “Y/N!” He beamed excitedly. “I’m so happy to see you again!”
You laughed at his cuteness. “Same, and you’ve gotten better speaking English.”
“All thanks to my beautiful English teacher,” he flirted boldly.
You rolled your eyes playfully at him and asked, “So Yuta, are you ready to explore my country?”

but i can't say that i/wasted my time/cause i am built by you/and i can't say that i/am glad it is over/cause that wouldn't be true
shout at the wall/cause the walls don't fucking love you
I think I've lost my mind
Blurring the fact and the fictions/While simultaneously fixing/Myself up with a girl/Named Panadol/Bite the tablet, elixir/Disintegrate, mouth's a mixer
we could eat the foam from the headrest/you could suck the wind out of my breath/you could kiss the teeth into my head/and still there's no cause for concern
you held his hands, it felt like flying/now he's just another man/you'd rather he was inside than beside you/but he's talking marriage and a future/he's picking a lock he doesn't go into/less knife in a wound, he's a suture
If I could just break one more night/maybe i could wake up and feel alright/my optimistically set alarm clock time/serves only to mock me with flashing lights
I was gonna wait for you/so this is not an act of spite/it's a visceral coming-to
It's not ahegao hoodie it's a work of art/so let me know when my feelings stop/I'm just your window to another world/where you ended up lost and poor/i don't wanna be a soft boy anymore
i won't wear the cat ears/i won't wear the cat ears/i won't please just don't make me wear the cat ears/I'm so done with the cat ears please no more cat ears
and yes you always do that one thing/cause when you throw and drench me under your drink/i try to figure out what that means/i took it as a taunt
the cute bomber jacket you've had since sixth form/adorned with patches of places you've been/ is nothing on my khaki coat i got from the roadside/when i was 16/my boots are from airports/my backpacks from friends/I'm not a man of substance and so I'll pretend to be/wanderer, wandering, leaving acetic belongings in hostels and restaurant bins/cut that bit out/the roads are my home as horizons my target/if i keep on moving I'll never lose sight of it/treating my memory of you like a fire/let it burn out/don't fight it/try to move on/it's been sixty week since i saw Vienna/a bandage and a wide smile slapped across my face/I'll pick up my hiking boots when I am ready/and I'll put down my roots when I'm dead/the distance is futile/come on don't be hasty/you'll get that feeling deep inside your bones/I'll be gone and/for when you must be alone
and i distrust their name/and i hate their haircut/they look like a prick/but it's all the same/you hug me goodbye/your tounge is razor sharp
my love/i love you everytime your face turns blue/and you speak over microphone/although it's only binary/i think it's timely that i asked if you'd marry me
push down your undesirables and lift up all the fakes/make sure you're not liable when they all make mistakes
you talk about habits/boy i can name a few/but i don't bloody understand it/is it chemical reactions or trained in two
oh I'm starting to succumb to my insecurities/maybe grade school was the place where i peaked
i don't miss you/i miss the thought of what we were
What was your thought when you realized/you'll never feel naive love again?/was it pain or was it sickness?
I want to be the guy/that you fall asleep on call with/I'll make you forget every guy that came before me/cause i like you/and you like my attention/let's skip to the good bit
eat my rent and eat my food/and eat my dues and eat those kids/and maybe use a sextant
and I'll write you songs/until my lungs fall out/until you hear me out
maybe one day I'll live in la Jolla/drinking cocktails out over the water/my own personal sunset/to give each day it's own diploma
when you hold his hands/it doesn't feel like flying/and when you take his breath away/he might as well be dying/and you're dying to breathe/your trapped in his cage/and it's shrinking/and she thought/what if he just never leaves/or he doesn't get the message/or he doesn't hear my pleas/so she just started screaming/why can't he just bore me to death
i said it last time/but I'm not afraid of empty rooms/I'm not afraid of new perfumes/and in fact my dear I'm fucking terrified
he never had cool stories/he doesn't make your heart beat/used to love his mystery/but now he's just exhausting/another day spent/just laying in his room/the stench of incense/and some undelivered food
my keyboards like my heart/it shines in RGB and it's full of blood
cultured men/venetian suntan/red wine and club bands/viagra pills on the nightstand/how's it feel/how's it feel to be so loved?/how's it feel to be so loved yet so alone?
But it’s you/I didn’t think that I’d have to say/But I miss you and think of you almost every single day/And it’s you/I thought I would be braver/But I've missed you too long/My heart flipped to a screensaver/To a screensaver
cause it's only/white wine in a Wetherspoons/fine dining with cheap perfume/DLR closed to worker's strike/god knows how i'll get home tonight
my twitter feeds like my brain/cause i have it on dark mode
i will bake/i will bake/i will bake phallic cake
because you are what reality is made of
I'm a gentleman what can I say?/I'm also really mentally stable/I'm gonna kill myself/if you don't go out with me
cause we're fires we're burning bright/breaking bottles and starting fights/but the evening has other plans/run as they pull up with two more vans
i think about him a lot as well/maybe if he wasn't fine as hell
I use everyone I ever meet/can't find the perfect match/abuse those i love/while i ostracize those who love me back

Buon Compleanno (Don Giorno x Fem! Reader)
It's as the name says... This fic is close to my heart and I really enjoyed writing it for our Golden king's birthday. Mostly fluff, it does contain mentions of alcohol consumption though. I hope you all enjoy. ❤️🎊🎉😘🐞💭
P. S. Let the fluff ensue 💐
Word count: 2.5k
“So Mista... Fugo, are things ready on your end? I’ve got confirmation from North Island that everything is ready for us on their end. We have to stagger our arrivals so that Giorno doesn’t actually see you guys there until the party. All our villas are ready for our arrival and his presents are being safe guarded there until we arrive,” you beamed as you secretly went over the final checklist for Giorno’s birthday get away with the team and Trish.
Your friends had ever so thoughtfully come over to see you and Giorno off… well more so to iron out the last details of your master plan, but your boyfriend didn’t need to know that. Attempting to keep your plans for his birthday hidden from him was a near impossible feat. Trying to get him to take some time off and just live for himself was an even bigger task, but being who you are, you managed to plan everything down to the finest detail.
Trying to get the entire island to yourselves and plan the party of a century for your closest allies was a mammoth task, but it was what you felt Giorno deserved. In the years that he’s spent running Passione, he had always placed his own needs secondary to the needs of the organization, which is why you resolved to give him the best experience imaginable for his 21st birthday.
“Hi Giorno! We were just talking about you,” piped up Trish in a voice loud enough to alert everyone to the young don’s looming presence. Eyes widening for a split second, you manage to compose yourself without him catching on and flashed him a pleasant smile. You were taken aback by how handsome he looked dressed down in an azure linen Armani suit, hair braided loosely and cascading down his shoulder. He took his place at your side, casually circling his arm around your waist and pressing a kiss to your temple.
“Morning everyone, what’s this about me?”
“Oh, we’re just discussing what we’re going to be doing when you’re away… you know, cats and mice and the like,” joked Fugo, earning him a worried look from Giorno.
“Gosh, relax my love… come on, we have to go, it’s a pretty long flight,”
“Alright, alright, let’s go bella. Well, I’ll see you all in a few days’ time,” leaving to the collective goodbye wishes of your friends you set off to catch the private jet which would take you to the little piece of heaven in the Seychelles.
Upon landing at the airport, you were just one short helicopter flight away from your destination. Giorno’s demeanor was akin to that of a child on Christmas eve, taking in his beautiful surroundings on the helicopter. Stepping onto the helipad, you were greeted by the wonderful fresh scents of the salty sea air, clear blue seas and white sandy beaches for as far as the eye could see. After the welcome, you were lead to the main villa, given your golf cart and allowed yourselves to get settled in for the rest of the night, choosing to spend a quiet night lounging on the balcony overlooking the ocean.
Giorno couldn’t help but stare at your beautiful form. The way the moonlight bounced off the ocean behind you and illuminated your skin mesmerized him. He had known you ever since he had taken over Passione. You served as a valuable ally when it came to weeding out the members who were still unwilling to adopt his ideals. As the years marched on, he started seeking out your company more and more, until it became apparent that he was at his happiest when he was around you… and once the realization had dawned on him, he wasted no time in making you his. You fell hard, and fast, and it was so easy fall into step with each other’s lives, as if you had been created just for each other.
“Bella, this is incredible, I know I put up a bit of a fight but I’m so glad you did this…” he uttered with a dreamy look on his face.
“I’m glad you think so my love, you’re going to love the day I have planned for us tomorrow… Ah! Actually, later on today," you say, glancing at your watch, "it’s just past midnight! Happy birthday my love! I hope you know how much I love you, and I’m incredibly proud of you and all you have managed to accomplish at such a young age… you’re… you’re pretty amazing you know,” the emotions swirled around in Giorno’s eyes while listening to your heartfelt speech.
“(y/n) … I… you’re… I just love you so much tesoro, you’re everything I could ever want,”
“I love you too Gio… come on, it’s late, let’s get some rest,” you say while leading him to bed.
Tumblr media
You rose early, just as the sun made its glorious appearance over the ocean. As early as you had woken up though, Giorno was already awake, nursing a cup of coffee as he stared pensively at the brilliant blue water.
“Good morning handsome, penny for your thoughts?” you greeted your lover, wrapping your arms lovingly around his shoulders and nuzzling into his soft hair.
“Good morning principessa… I’m just thinking about how much I love you…”
“Oh? Is that so, Mr. Giovanna? Well prepare to love me even more, go get ready, we have lots to do today,” you say, a lovely light, lilt coloring your voice.
“Any hints?”
“Wear something comfortable, something that we can walk around in,”
With that, your day had started with a guided hike through the island. Between Giorno’s life-imbuing ability and your affinity for adventure, you were both mesmerized by the flora and fauna you encountered on the hike. Once that was over you looked forward to coming back to a special couple’s massage which eased your sore muscles and relaxed you both into a dreamlike state. Finally, after your last treatments, you could get ready for your “dinner” at the piazza. Feeling a sense of pride as you put on the last of your accessories, you smiled at your reflection in the mirror while inspecting your stunning outfit, and grew even happier when you saw Giorno walking out in a casual charcoal grey Dior suit which matched your dress, but not his expression unfortunately.
“What’s the matter my love? You look great by the way…”
“Thank you tesoro… you’re quite the vision yourself,” standing behind you, sharing the mirror, he raked his fingers through his uncooperative hair, sighing in annoyance.
“Gio, stop- here, sit down, I’ll help you,” you say as you gently brush out the tangles and scrunch the wave back into his lovely golden hair. You carefully braid the length of his mane but leave his signature triad of ringlets out, admiring how beautifully the shorter sections of his hair framed his face.
“There…” you leaned back to admire your efforts, acknowledging the fact that you had a particularly exquisite model as well.
“Are you sure this is fine my love?” there was a hint of doubt in Giorno’s voice, but you made sure to banish any such thoughts.
“Of course, I love your hair like this,”
“Well, that’s good enough for me. Shall we leave my princess?”
“Yes… but can I drive the golf cart?” you ask, extending your arm to him, gesturing for the keys.
Speeding past the rest of the villas, you just wanted to make sure that everyone was already at the piazza ready to surprise the young don.
“Are you sure we’re at the right place my love? Or should we be at a different entrance, this looks like it’s closed,”
“Yes caro, come on, I’m sure the staff are inside… I’ve picked up on your habit of wanting to dine in solitude,” you explain as you walk towards the entrance hand in hand. Stepping into the restaurant, the lights dipped and instantly got brighter revealing your closest friends jumping out of their hiding spots with a collective, rambunctious yell of “surprise”, startling your unsuspecting boyfriend.
“Happy birthday my love,” you softly say once again, as the lively music started to play in the background.
“You… did all of this? For me?”
“Of course bello mio, well, I did have help though” you gestured behind Giorno, pointing out Mista, Trish and Fugo walking towards you both.
“Oi, happy birthday Giogio, haha, you look like you need a drink, I’ll be right back,” said Fugo as he went to order the first round of drinks for your little group. Between flitting amongst your guests, dancing with your handsome beau, and stealing moments away to be alone him, you almost forgot to give him his gifts, which were safely stored in the wine cellar of the establishment.
“Well, what do you think my love?” Giorno’s eyes widened when he saw the glass-encased, white Fender Stratocaster signed by just about every rock star, most importantly, his favorite guitarist, Jeff Beck.
“I’ve been looking for this for the longest time… how did you find it tesoro?”
“I also know some people… that’s not all, look next to it…” you motioned towards 5 Morocco solander boxes that housed a rare first edition of the complete 10 volumes of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables.
“I thought that might look quite beautiful in your study… adding something especially meaningful to your collection,”
“I’m speechless (y/n) … you’ve gone to such great lengths…” you hush him with a passionate kiss preventing him from gushing about your efforts as you were determined to make this night about him.
“I’m sure we’ve been gone for too long, lets rejoin our guests my love,” you started to walk towards the staircase exiting the wine cellar, but you were pulled back against Giorno’s broad chest, grasping your face in his hand, he kissed you with so much fervor this time, leaving you flustered and battling to calm your racing heart. Noticing the effect, he managed to have on you, he gently coaxed you back upstairs with a wicked smirk.
“Hey, you’re back, we’ve been looking all over for you two. We have one more person who wants to say hello,” with a soft smile, Trish reaches behind her to pull out coco jumbo, which meant only one thing…
“Signore Polnareff! Even you…”
“You know I’ve always had a soft spot for pretty girls Giorno… Joyeux anniversaire! You’re a brave young man with a good head on your shoulders and integrity in your heart, always hold on to that,”
“Thank you signore Polnareff, it means a lot coming from you, considering…” cutting him off before Giorno could complete his sentence, Polnareff attempted to lighten the mood.
“Non non non, no sad thoughts tonight, get this man a drink someone, you’re all slacking here,” he said looking at you as you mouthed a small thank you in his direction.
“(y/n), you’ve really outdone yourself. Giogio, you’re a lucky man,” said Mista as he brought a special bottle of champagne for you all to raise a toast with. “Alright, while we’re all here in the same place, I just want to say that you’re all important to me…”
“Mista’s drunk guys, prepare yourselves,” Trish says with an eye roll resulting in hushed giggles as the gunslinger tried to (unsuccessfully) arrange his sentimental thoughts.
Unable to stand it any longer, Trish takes over and pays homage to Giorno, as well as the special people who had given everything in order for them to live, enabling them to carry on their will.
As the party raged on, you took a small break in a dim corner of the piazza, and took a moment to marvel at the fruits of your labor. Everybody was having the best time, including Giorno. After being called away by one of his associates, it filled your heart with fluttery sensations watching the man you loved finally able to act his age for once.
“May I sit with you, carina?” startled out of your musings, you find an old friend standing over you.
“Lorenzo, of course, please, have a seat,” you offer emphatically.
“So, how is one half of Passione’s power couple doing?” his question earning a loud giggle from you. You continued to make conversation with Lorenzo, until Trish came to inform you that one of the service providers needed to confirm a few details with you, so you politely excused yourself and followed Trish. You were confused as she lead you to a secluded part of the beach, where you find Giorno standing alone, staring broodingly at the ocean for the second time that day. You realized that she just made an excuse draw you away to check on Giorno, being slightly concerned yourself after seeing the expression on his face.
“Gio? My love, what’s the matter? Did you just need some fresh air?” he turned to faced you with the softest smile.
“You know bella, I’ve loved you so deeply for years now… you always know what I need… even before I do. I never really feel complete anymore unless you’re with me… which is strange because I’ve always been content on my own. And then it hit me, you will always hold a part of me, and I’ll always seek you out because of it… You’ve given me probably the best experience of my life tonight, but, there’s just one more thing I would like from you to make the day perfect…” you felt light-headed when you saw Giorno moving to kneel down on one knee, pulling out a little trinket box, opening it to reveal the most beautiful ring.
“(y/n), would you give me the greatest gift and agree to spend the rest of your life with me as my wife?”
Emotions tugged at your pretty features, as you whispered a breathy affirmation, while nodding excitedly. Exhaling sharply with a stunning smile, Giorno got back to his feet and placed the elegant ring on your finger, capturing your lips in a passionate kiss thereafter. You threw your arms around his neck, and held him tightly, before the realization dawned on you.
“Wait! How long have you been planning this, Gio? Your question was met with his soft, exasperated laugh.
“Oh! For the longest time amore, I’ll admit though, your plans had forced me to adapt my own, but I had some help in achieving all of this… Trish is a lifesaver,” explained your new fiancé with a hint of pride in his voice.
“I love you Gio, but you managed to hijack your own celebration… I don’t know what to do with you!” the mock exasperation dripping from your voice drew a small laugh from Giorno.
“That’s your problem now tesoro, you already agreed to marry me, no take backs,” with that, you both decide to return to the festivities. Intertwining your fingers with his as you slowly walked back, you both stole loving glances at each other, communicating your intense affections for each other through your eyes alone… perhaps it was as he said, you mused… that a part of your soul resided with him also, and so you always sought him out to feel complete too, just as he did with you.

He’s up at quarter to six; throwing on a muscle shirt and a pair of work out pants and slipping into the well worn sneakers he keeps by the back door. A run on the beach as the sun peeks over the horizon is exactly what he needs; his bad knees cushioned by sand beneath him, a steady, cool breeze blowing in off the ocean, and the sky painted in vivid orange and gold and stunning pink streaks. The two dogs run on either side of him; their tags clinking against their collars, each carrying a tennis ball in their mouths in hopes of play after the hard work is done. The excursion to his body is calming to both brain and soul; pushing all thoughts of Mark and his devious intentions onto the back burner and concentrating on nothing but his breathing and his heart rate and the sights and sounds around him. And once at the finish line, he bends at the waist and places his hands on his thighs; eyes closed as the sweat trickles off his forehead and runs down his nose and his temples and gathers at the nape of his neck. Chest heaving and burning; a familiar discomfort that serves to remind him of just how far he’s come. Fighting against the odds to complete the long and painful recovery after the incident with Nathan and coming out almost as good as he was before; strong, agile, his health better than it's ever been. He’d somehow survived and he’d long ago swore he'd never take another minute for granted; always grateful to wake up and find himself on top of the ground instead of below it.
After a half an hour of entertaining the dogs, he returns home; splashing cold water on his face and neck and running wet hands through his sweaty hair and then heading for the kitchen. Busying himself with the morning routine; brewing his coffee and the three shots of espresso he always adds to it. The smoothies are next; a wide selection of fresh fruit and various supplements and vitamins recommended by both his doctor and Esme’s fetal and maternal medicine specialist. And the moment he hears her footsteps above -small and light, but just heavy enough to NOT be a child- he begins preparing her breakfast; kettle boiling for her tea while he throws a couple of slices of bread in the toaster and gathers up a container of plain yogurt and a handful of different fruits to chop. He glances over his shoulder and smiles in greeting when she joins him; messy hair held away from her face and out of her eyes with a sparkly purple headband stolen from one of their daughters and her tiny frame clad in a pair of baggy Hello Kitty night shorts and one of his t-shirts. And before he can open his mouth to offer up a ‘good morning’, she’s wrapping her around his waist from behind; yawning loudly and rubbing her cheek against the fabric of his shirt before laying her head against his back.
“Babe…” he warns. “ I probably stink. Gonna make you pass out. Give the baby in utero PTSD.”
“Bullshit. You smell good. You smell like a man. MY man. “
“All the kids still asleep?”
Esme nods. “You already went for a run?”
“Just a small one. Took the dogs with me. Tired them out.”
“I thought you said Sunday was your ‘set in stone rest day’?
“I did. But that’s just for lifting heavy.” Turning around to face her, he takes her face in his hands, turning her head up towards him as he leans down to kiss her. “I’m still going to run every day.”
“You know how I feel about this; when it comes to you pushing yourself too hard.”
“I know you worry. I know you don’t blow out my knee or fuck my femur up somehow. I’m taking it easy; I’m not going full tilt and I’m not ignoring my body when it starts screaming at me. I’m doing a lot better; when it comes to recognizing the signs and paying attention to them.”
“I just want you to be careful. I don’t want you hurting yourself. And you've been spending a lot of time in the gym. You went from one three hour a work out a day to TWO. That’s a lot, babe. Even for a bad ass like you. I know you feel this need to be bigger and stronger and…”
“I’m past that. Maybe just looking to put on another ten. That’s it. That’s probably as big as I’ll ever get again. Sorry. No return to the thicc, lumberjack stage that you enjoyed so much.”
“I DID enjoy it. You had the big muscles and the extra weight in your tummy and your hair was short and your beard was really thick. It was a good look on you. A VERY good look.”
“But…”
“But I love you EVERY way. And how your body is right now? That’s how you looked when we met. When I fell in love with you. So it tends to be my favourite. It’s very sentimental to me. And you know what would make it even MORE sentimental?”
“If you want me to get the haircut, I’ll get the haircut.”
“You would do that for little old me? You’d do that to keep your pregnant and extremely hormonal wife happy?”
“I would do anything for you. Pregnant or not.”
“Best husband ever,” she declares, and stands on her tip toes as he kisses her once more; hands tightly grasping the sides of his t-shirt.
She’d long ago gotten used to that ‘after work out’ stench; the potent tang of sweat , the lingering remains of laundry detergent, and the cool, brisk, freshness of antiperspirant. It’s HIS smell. One that reminds her of safety and protection and love. Of HOME. When he’s away, it’s those combined, familiar scents that offer comfort; bringing solace to her aching heart and effectively relieving at least some of the fear and worry nagging at her. Sleeping with his pillow every night and often wearing one of his t-shirts or bundling herself up in one of his hoodies; soothed by the smell of him clinging to the sheets and clothes and subduing her rattled nerves just enough for her to fall asleep.
It never gets easier; kissing him goodbye at the front door or the airport and then wondering -as he walks away- if she’ll ever see him again. The job isn’t a life you ever really get used to; lying to yourself when you tell others that you’re completely fine with your husband being thousands of miles away, putting his life on the line in the hopes of saving another. But she copes; knowing he can more than handle himself when it comes to the physical aspect and that he’ll do whatever it takes to get back to her and the kids. But the ache is real when he’s not under the same roof; both her and their brood feeling his absence and both saddened and angered about it. And the worry and fear never disappear; feeling as if she’s holding her breath the entire time, never releasing it until the moment he walks back through the front door. Safe and sound.
Pressing his lips to her forehead, he turns towards the counter once more; snagging a knife from the butcher’s block and preparing the only breakfast her stomach has been able to handle. Dry toast accompanied by chunks of fresh fruit, a smoothie containing all the vitamins and supplements recommended by her doctor, and a tea that helps with calming both her tummy and her nerves. While the nausea lingers throughout the entire day, the mornings have been especially horrendous; unable to keep even the smallest sips of water down and struggling with both weakness and dizziness. All of the pregnancies have been the same in that respect; losing weight before actually managing to put it on, suffering from headaches and queasiness and even a handful of scares that sent them running to the hospital in fear there was something terribly wrong. But the sixth pregnancy is turning out to be an even bigger struggle; half a dozen different medications fighting to keep her blood pressure down, help her sleep, and keep her eating and drinking properly.
“I’m surprised you’re up,” Tyler remarks, as she moves to the stove to tend to the boiling kettle. Offering a mug with the tea bag already in it; his hand briefly resting on the small of her back as he places a kiss on her temple. “You were sleeping pretty good when I went on my run.”
Sighing, she sets the mug down on the stovetop and fills it with water. “I probably still would be if your spawn didn’t wake me up out of nowhere and send me on a mad dash to the bathroom. I’ve come to expect SOME sickness, but this?”
“This one’s giving you an extra hard time, huh? What did the doctor say? Something about making too much human growth hormone? I don’t know. She completely lost me when she broke out the science speak.”
“A variant of it. And it’s too much of ALL the hormones. Kind of weird; that the last pregnancy would be the worst. You’d think it would be the easiest; your body totally used to everything, able to push that sucker out with only two tries. I swear to Christ, Tyler. If this is another Millie labour…”
“You’ll cut my dick off?”
“That’s a little extreme. You need your dick. It’s still very useful. I’ll just chop your balls off. So you can’t make any more swimmers.”
“How about we not do that and just let the surgeon handle things?”
“I want a goddamn guarantee from him that this isn’t going to happen again; your penis remarkably healing itself and letting those swimmers of yours have free reign.”
“I’m going to jump in here for a second. You realize your body fucked up too, yeah? That it took BOTH of us to make this baby? Your tubes were tied. Right after you had Kota and Brookie. You’re not supposed to be able to get pregnant in the first place.”
She stares at him over the rim of her mug. “Even if I hadn’t gotten them tied, you weren’t supposed to be able to produce any sperm. Ever again. For the rest of your natural born life. But low and behold…”
“You…” He points the knife at her. “...need to accept some responsibility in all of this.”
She huffs, taking a sip of tea and then setting it on the stove; hands on her hips in a show of defiance. “I will do no such thing.”
“Come on, this can’t all be pinned entirely on me. Both our bodies had to screw up for this to happen. So be a big girl…” snagging her by the front of her t-shirt, he gently pulls her into him. “...and take some of the blame.”
She stares up at him; a smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth and those enormous, dark eyes sparkling mischievously. “No. You can’t make me.”
“Listen pocket wife, I’m a foot and three inches taller than you and almost a hundred pounds heavier. I can make you.”
“I’d like to see you try. You don’t intimidate me. Your muscles and your resting asshole face and all those tattoos and scars. They don’t scare me a bit.”
“You realize I have ways of convincing you, don’t you? Ways that don’t involve intimidation. “
“Yeah?” Both hands clutch the front of her shirt as her body leans into his. “What kind of ways are we talking about then?”
He swipes the tip of his tongue across his bottom lip. “Sexual ones.”
“You realize that sounds more like pleasure than punishment, right?”
“You remember that thing we did back in New York City. In the bathtub. The thing you claim to hate but always seem to love? The one thing that I always can count on to make you squirt? Do you know what thing I’m talking about?”
“I know EXACTLY what you’re talking about.”
“Well next time around, when you least expect it? I’m going to do that twice as much. Only this time there won’t be a happy ending. For you, anyway.”
Her eyes narrow. “You wouldn’t.”
“Yes. Yes I would.”
“You’re evil.”
“Most evil husband out there.”
“You may be the most evil, but you’re also the sexiest out there. So at least you have THAT going for you,” she chides, giving a tiny yelp when he brings a palm down on the cheek of her ass in a ringing slap. Giggling when his hand reverts to lightly pinching and squeezing before drawing her into him; body pressed against his and her hands tightening their grip on his shirt as he leans down to kiss her. Long and slow and deep; the brief contact between their tongues finding her curling her toes and sighing into his mouth.
When he pulls away he’s smiling down at her; blue eyes sparkling with a mixture of unbridled lust and pure adoration. Hand moving from her ass to the side of her cheek; knuckles grazing over the soft skin before gentle fingertips clear wayward strands of hair away from her face and tuck them behind her ear. “You’re beautiful.”
“You need glasses.”
“I already knew that. But needing them doesn’t mean you’re not beautiful.”
The smile she gives is shaky; tears welling in her eyes as a lump of emotion wedges firmly in her throat. It’s overwhelming at times; seeing his love, adoration, and affection laid so bare. This big, strong man with his myriad of tattoos and scars and a lifetime of trauma, guilt, and regret. So brave and fearless yet so vulnerable at the same time; possessing a heart that he’s even bigger than his body and a beauty to his soul that not even his father, Asif, Mahajan, or Nathan had been able to rob him of. Working as a team, she’d spent years helping chip away at the seemingly impenetrable walls that he’d built around his heart; patiently urging him outside of his comfort zone and encouraging that humanity lingering inside of him to make itself fully known. In the end, the reward was far beyond anything she could ever imagined; a man that loves her so wholly and completely. And profoundly. So much so it often takes her breath away; and all consuming and often leaving her feeling unworthy of such devotion.
He frowns when he notices the tears in her eyes and the tell tale wobble of her lower lip and chin. “What’s the matter? Why are you gonna cry? What…?”
Her voice comes out as a childlike whimper; reminding him of Addie when she’s been scolded or has had a particularly rough run in with Millie and the teasing was just too much to take. “I really need a hug right now.”
Setting the knife on the counter, he gathers her in his arms. One arm circling her waist as a hand settles on the back of her skull; palm lightly pressing her head into his chest. And when she stands on the top of his feet and perches on her tiptoes in order to return the embrace, he crouches down until she’s able to successfully wrap both arms around his neck. His beautiful, tiny wife; his best friend, truest confident, and his rock during his darkest and most dire of times. Always sticking by his side no matter how difficult he sometimes makes things; forever patient and attentive during the long and painful recovery after Nathan, always forgiving him for his sins and mistakes even when he can’t forgive himself. Suddenly seeming so weak and vulnerable herself; her entire body trembling and her tears seeping through the fabric of his shirt.
“You’re gonna be alright,” he promises, and presses a kiss to her ear. “It’s gonna be okay. It’s ALL gonna be okay.”
*****
He hates seeing her like this; face lined with worry and exhaustion, shoulders drooped as if carrying the weight of the world upon them, eyes dark and downcast instead of sparkling and playful. He’d long ago gotten used to her morning persona; overly cheerful and extremely talkative compared to his grumpiness and need for complete and utter silence until he’s at least finished his coffee. So it’s unsettling when she deviates from the norm; missing the familiarity and the routine of her chattiness and her teasing and witty banter. Instead completely silent as she sits across from him at the table on the back deck; her feet resting in his lap as she merely nibbles at the dry toast and moves the pieces of various fruits around on her plate.
He gestures at her plate with his fork. “You need to eat. Start putting weight on instead of it dropping off.”
“It’s not like I’m NOT trying.” She spears a chunk of watermelon and brings it to her lips, taking a tiny bite before setting it back down again. “I WANT to eat. My body is BEGGING me to eat. But it’s kind of hard when you just feel...I don’t know...off.”
“Something we need to worry about? Something to do with the baby?”
“No. I feel fine that way. Other than being crazy nauseous and already having insane heartburn. How much hair is this kid going to have? Because the only other time I suffered this bad…”
“We ended up with Addie. Hairiest damn kid I have EVER seen. Hands down.”
She manages a smile, then nibbles at a slice of dry toast. “Remember how it was practically head to toe? Because she was a preemie?”
“She looked like a little monkey. A cute one, mind you. But a monkey.”
“Don’t ever say that to her. It’ll be her new obsession; monkey this, monkey that. None of our other babies had much hair. If any at all. Well, Declan…”
“I will never forget seeing that head of hair. Bright red.”
“You looked so confused,” Esme muses, as she once more pulls her plate towards her and attempts to eat. “When he was crowning. It was like he had two heads or something.”
Tyler winks at her from across the table. “I was trying to figure out when you had time to get busy with me AND the cable guy.”
“Baby, he is all yours. Without a doubt. The cable man didn’t stand a chance getting close to me. So unless you can get pregnant just by breathing the same air as someone…”
“I hope you’d have better standards than that guy. If you’re going to do something like that, can you at least have the respect to go a notch higher than I am in quality?”
“That’s not even remotely possible. You’re already on the very top rung of quality. In fact, you’re in another league all your own. All by yourself. If you have the best, why settle for less?”
A grin plays on his mouth. “You are so good for my ego.”
“Besides, we both know I’m the last person that would EVER do something like that. I am way too hopelessly and madly and wildly in love with you. Always have been. Always will be. So unless you’re planning on going somewhere, you’re stuck with me. For the long haul.”
“I’m perfectly happy where I am. And with who I’m with. You know that, yeah? That I’d never do something like that. No matter who’s trying to get with me? I would never...EVER..cheat on you.”
“This is stemming from my insecurities, isn't it? Those women yesterday.”
“I just wanted to get it out there. I don’t care about any of them. There might as well not even be any other women on earth. The only one that matters? The only one I want? Is you. And that’s not going to change.”
“And you say I’m good for YOUR ego?”
“I mean, maybe it doesn’t need to be said. Maybe you already realize all that. Or maybe you’re going to tell me that you don’t need the words; you can see everything in my eyes anyway. I just think sometimes I should say it. Who knows, maybe I need to tell you more than you need to hear it.”
Well…” She reaches for his hand that rests on the tabletop, running her fingertips along his forearm and over his palm before lacing their fingers together. “...a girl DOES like to hear how much she’s adored and worshipped.”
“I thought you like it better when I SHOW you how much.”
“That too. But sometimes it’s a nice little bonus; hearing the words.”
Pushing his chair away, he stands and leans across the table; free hand reaching out to cradle her cheek in its palm. “I worship you. I adore you. I love you. And I can’t live without you.”
While tears sparkle in her eyes, her smile is genuine; filling out her cheeks and crinkling the bridge of her nose. “And you say you’re not romantic.”
He bends down to kiss her; the soft press and languid movements of closed mouth upon closed mouth. “I do have my moments,” he says with a grin, running the tip of a finger down the bridge of her nose, playfully tapping the end of it before returning to his seat.
They sit in companionable silence. Enjoying the crisp, refreshing breeze that rolls in off the ocean and the familiar yet calming sounds of the outdoors. The waves rolling up onto the shore, the rustling of the trees as they sway in the wind and the different melodies that come from Esme’s collection of wind chimes attached to the awnings of the pool house. It’s home. The familiar yet never boring sights and sounds of the where they’re the most comfortable; where they grow and nurture their family and take advantage of the many spoils given to them by such a beautiful and expansive piece of land.
Returning to Australia had been the best move they’d ever made. The start of strengthening not only their marriage, but every aspect of the life and relationship they share; making sure to nurture and grow each separate component that makes them, THEM. Often having to pull back from the chaos and stress of everyday existence to remind themselves that they’re not just spouses and people raising kids together; they’re each other’s confidants, best friends and devoted and faithful lovers. Two unique individuals that share a bond unlike many could ever fully understand; broken and in tatters when they’d first met yet somehow managing to comfort and heal one another. What had happened in Dhaka will forever remain the foundation their life together has been built open. A rather odd concoction of many things; shared grief and regret, adrenaline and fear, profound lust accompanied by the pangs of the heart that remind you that you’re still human. And a lot of blood, sweat and tears. All combined with the unforgettable stenches of raw sewage, blood and sweat, and spilled gasoline.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
He breaks the silence first, pushing away his empty plate and reaching for his smoothie. Satisfied with her attempt to get food into her belly; her own meal almost completely finished save for a couple bites of toast and a small handful of grapes. Her feet once more resting in his lap; both hands curled around the plastic tumbler that contains the thickened ‘super shake’ he’d made for her earlier.
“By ‘it’ I’m assuming you mean Mark?”
Tyler nods.
“What more is there to say? He’s in town. Not like there’s anything we can really do about it. Not until he at least makes a move.”
“I’ve got guys trying to track him down. Looking into every hotel, every bed and breakfast, every short term rental within a fifty mile radius. Unless he’s gone totally off the grid and he’s holed up in a cave somewhere, my guys will find him.”
“Is that really what you were doing last night? Taking care of all of that stuff? Getting people going on all this?”
“It was some of what I was doing. Not all of it. When you came in, I was doing exactly what I told you I was. I’d already gotten it all set up; guys already starting to dig. Told ‘em not to leave any stone unturned; Mark’s crafty and he’s slippery and he’s going to do everything he can to avoid me catching up to him. He wants the element of surprise; get to you when my guard is down. I’m hoping to get to him before that happens.”
“When do you ever let your guard down?”
“Even I slip up, Esme. You know that better than anyone.”
“Tyler Rake doesn’t make mistakes when it’s family on his line. He rarely makes them when it’s complete strangers he’s looking out for. You’re not the type to fall asleep at the wheel, babe. Especially when it comes to the kids. And ESPECIALLY when it comes to me.”
“I can’t be around you twenty-four seven. There’s going to be times I can’t be with you. As much as I’d love to be glued to your hip…”
“Do you trust the guys you picked? You don’t exactly hand that out lightly, Tyler. And you’ve always been very careful about who you bring into the business. You’ve always had the strictest hiring practices I’ve ever seen. You don’t just bring anyone aboard. And if you’re willing to put them in charge of keeping an eye on him…”
“I trust them when it comes to the job. They’re some of the best I’ve ever seen, actually.”
“Other than yourself, you mean.
“They’re good, Me. They’re quick on their feet and they’re strong as fuck and they will not back down. From anyone or anything.”
“But…”
“But I don’t fully trust anyone when it comes to you. That’s not something I can give; just hand over your life like that. No matter how well I know someone or how good of a merc they are. But I don’t have a choice, do I? It’s not possible to be around every second of every day. I wish it was. I wish I was the only one taking care of you. But…”
“If your gut tells you that these guys can handle it, then that’s what you go with. I trust you, Tyler. Whether it’s protecting me on your own or making the decision to hand it off to someone else. Your instincts are so strong. Some of the strongest I have ever seen. And if they’re telling you that this is right...that these men are right…”
“They’re telling me that I don’t have any other choice. That I NEED to trust these guys. And I want to Esme; I want to be able to sit here and tell you that I trust them one hundred percent. But other than you? There’s no one I trust that way.”
“If you say this is the right decision and that these are the right people, then I’ll go with that. Because I trust YOU. I always have. I always will. So if this is the move you need to make and you’re confident in it…”
“As confident as I’m gonna be.”
“Then there’s nothing more to talk about. If you trust them, then so do I. Simple as that.”
He nods slowly as he considers her words, then offers a small smile and once more takes her hand; lifting it to his lips and pressing a kiss to the inside of her wrist.
“I know you don’t have any answers. And to be honest, I don’t expect any. But I just don’t understand. Why is he doing this? Why now? If it’s a revenge thing, why wait this long? I haven’t been married to him for fifteen years. Why wait that long?”
“I don’t know, Me. I don’t even know if that’s his angle.”
“Everything says it is. What else could he possibly want? Do you think he’s a threat? To me?”
“Yeah,” Tyler reluctantly admits. “I do. He wouldn’t come out of the woodwork after all this time and play all those little mind games in New York and then make it a point to show up here IF he wasn’t planning something. I just don't know exactly what it is. Or when he’s gonna make his move. And hopefully the guys I have trying to find him will track him down. Sooner the better.”
“What will they do with him? If they do find him?”
“Found a little out of the way place in the northern territory. Somewhere they can keep him; until I can get there. Off the beaten track, no through roads, heavy bush. Not a single soul around. Figure that’s for the best, yeah? Keep him somewhere no one can hear screaming and pleading for his life.”
“You’re going to handle that yourself?”
“Hopefully. Told my guys that they can rough him up, but I want him very much alive. So he can feel every goddamn thing I do to him. And I know you’re probably thinking this is a throwback to McMann; taking him hostage and torturing his ass. But…”
“You do what you need to do, Tyler. You do whatever you feel he deserves. I’m not going to think any less of you. And Lord knows that I’ve had quite a few fantasies about how brutal I would love you to be if you ever got your hands on him. I’m not going to ask how and I don’t expect you to tell me. You just do what you need to do. To make him suffer and make him pay for what…” Her voice cracks; tears of both rage and insurmountable pain welling in her eyes. “...just make him pay. Promise me you’ll make him pay.”
Sliding his chair away from the table, he’s at her side in only three long strides; dropping to a knee in front of her and taking her trembling hands in his.
“Promise me, Tyler. Promise me you’ll make him pay.”
“I’ll make him pay, Esme. I promise.”
“Everything he did to him. Everything he said. It’s just all coming back. All those horrible, mean, degrading things he called me. All the times he forced me to do disgusting, horrible things to him. All the nasty, gross shit that HE did to ME.”
He feels the rage that immediately begins to take hold; his jaw setting and tightening and the blue of his eyes becoming much darker. Bile settling in the back of his throat; acrid and burning. He hates hearing about it; the horrific things that she’d been subjected to at the hands of someone who was supposed to love her, protect her, and give her a good life. The person he loves more than anything else in the world and would gladly lay his life down for. Not just his wife, but his best friend and the mother of his children and the centre of his universe.
“You don’t have to talk about this,” he says, and tightly squeezes her hands. “Nothing good will come from going there. Nothing…”
“He is an evil, sick, demented person,” she continues, words struggling to make it through the sobs. “He used to make me clean the baseboards and the grout with my toothbrush and then he’d force me to use it afterwards. If he was in a mood and didn’t like what I made for dinner, he’d throw it on the floor and he’d make me get on my hands and knees and force me to eat it. Like I was a dog! And when I tried to fight back, the beatings just got worse and worse and worse and…”
“That’s enough,” he gently orders, and releases his hold on her hands in favour of drawing her into his embrace. An arm wrapped around her waist and a palm resting on the back of her head; pressing a kiss to her temple and her cheek before drawing her face down to his shoulder. “No more. Don’t do this to yourself. Don’t go back to that place.”
One of her hands clutch desperately at the back of his shirt, the other clamping down on the nape of his neck. “How do I ever get over it? How do I ever fully leave all that behind? I thought I was doing okay with it. I thought I was finally putting it all past me. I thought…”
“Sometimes there’s things we don’t really get over. Not completely, anyway. And that was fucking hell; the shit that he put you through. I’m sorry, Me. I am so fucking sorry.”
“Is it weird that sometimes I think about ‘what if’? That I’ll wonder what it would have been like if we’d met some other way? Some other time. Some other place. Before all the bad shit ever happened. Imagine? If we’d met before all of that; if we’d found each other and healed one another sooner?”
“There’s nothing wrong with thinking about that stuff. But babe….listen to me….” He pulls away and cradles her face in his hands; thumbs swiping at the tears that continue to fall “...you can’t live the rest of your life thinking about that. Because if none of the bad ever happened? We wouldn’t have met. Because all the loss and the bullshit put us on the path that led us to each other. And yeah; it was fucking painful and I wanted to put a gun in my mouth and pull the trigger so many times. But in the end, all that crap? All the hard stuff? It brought you into my life. You know that. I KNOW you know that.”
“What if it was all for nothing? You spent YEARS trying to make up for all his mistakes. You didn’t care how messy I was or how messy my life had been before you. You just picked up the pieces and you put me back together. And you never complained ONCE; You just did it.”
“I did it because I love you. Because I couldn’t exactly go and find the guy and kill him with my bare fucking hands. And believe me, I’ve thought about it many times. About how I’d do it. And how I’d make it as slow and painful as possible.”
“All the time and the work you put into fixing me. What if Mark puts me over the edge and I become a big mess again? What if all of a sudden I’m in a million fucking pieces again? What then? It will all be for nothing?”
“No. It won’t. And you know why? Because even if you fall apart a thousand times, each time I’m going to pick those pieces up and I’m going to find a way to make them up. I love you, Esme. More than I ever loved anyone. More than I even thought was possible. And if it DOES happen...you do fall apart...I’m just going to be here to pick you...and all those pieces….back up.”
“I don’t deserve that. I don’t deserve YOU.”
“Baby, you deserve the fucking world. And I’d give it to you if I could. Come here…” Pressing a kiss to her brow, he tangles his fingers in her hair and draws her head down onto his shoulder; other hand moving in slow, comforting circles in the middle of her back. “...everything’s alright. There’s nothing to be scared of. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
“It’s not that I’m scared. Not of him getting a hold of me. I know that you’d never let him get that close. You’d do anything to protect me. I’ve never...ever...doubted that. I just hate what it’s doing to me; him being back in my life. I feel like I’m drowning in all this stuff from the past and that there’s no way you’ll be able to pull me out of it. Like it’s going to suck me under and you won’t stand a chance of getting me back.”
“That’s not going to happen. I won’t LET that happen.”
“I don’t know how much more of this I can take,,” she admits. “Worrying all the time about the baby and trying so hard to take care of the other kids and now this crap with Mark and him being so close to us.”
“I know it’s really overwhelming right now, Me. I know it’s a lot of things being heaped on your plate. And believe me, I am taking as much of it off as I can. And this stress with Mark is just making everything else seem even worse. But I got you. I’m not going to let anything happen to you. I just need you to trust me.”
“I do. I DO trust you.”
“You got lots of help with the kids. You got me, you got Stel, Riley’s always willing to drop everything and lend a hand. And you know how much grandpa Koen loves to spend time with them. He’s always ready, willing, and able to step up.”
Managing a laugh, she pulls back and swipes at her tears with the back of her hands. “He was in fine form last night, huh?”
“He was definitely on top of his ‘shit talk Tyler’ game.”
“Everything he says, he says with love. He’s a wreck, you know. When he showed up in Dhaka. He was all laughs and jokes at first and I’m sure that was just to calm his nerves, because when he got to your room? He just lost it. Totally broke down. I’ve never seen him get that emotional since.”
“I guess he’s got a little bit of a soft spot for me. Considering I was an enormous shit head when I first met him and he threatened to beat the attitude out of me. And believe me; he tried a couple times. Tough love, yeah? He’s the guy that turned me into the solider I became. And tried to stop me from destroying myself after everything fell apart. Spent years trying to talk some sense into me. Never stuck.”
“Guess you just weren’t ready for that yet. You just had a bit more of your journey to take. I’m sorry it was as crappy as it was. That you had to go through what you did.”
“Lost my kid and my sobriety. And probably most of my sanity.”
“It’s not fair. That you had to go through so much. Starting right from you were a little boy. Not a single step of your path has been easy.”
“No. I guess it hasn’t. But every one of those steps was worth it. ‘Cause look where I am now. I’m a long way from The Kimberley.”
“Leaps and bounds,” she smiles. “Even in the last five years.”
“It was worth it. It was ALL worth it. And this? Whatever the hell THIS is? With Mark? That’s just another bump in the road we gotta get past. I just need you to trust me. That’s it.”
“I’ve always trusted you, Tyler. Always.”
“Everything’s going to be alright,” he promises, and once more gathers her into a tight, protective embrace. “I didn’t lose you in New York and I’m sure as hell not gonna lose you now. Especially not to him.”
The scrape of the screen door opening upon its track captures his attention, and he glances up in time to see his oldest son step onto the porch. Hair mussed from sleep and sticking up in several different directions; barefoot and clad in only a pair of blue, red, and white plaid pyjama bottoms. And it’s the first time that he’s noticed just how grown up that his namesake is becoming; only ten, but tall and athletically built with well chiselled ab muscles and noticeable definition in his arms and shoulders. All long limbs and torso and tanned skin; brilliant, expressive blue eyes and his once shoulder length dirty blond hair now chopped short. Despite his issues with impulse control, his diagnosis with ADHD, and his volatile temper, he always seems much older and wiser than his actual age; independent and detail and routine oriented and always willing to step up and lend a hand with his younger siblings or with chores and repairs around the house. And it’s bitter sweet; his first son after losing Austin growing up in what seems like the blink of an eye. Proud of him for the person...the man...that he’s becoming but missing the little boy he was; the one who’d be attached to his hip and who explored the world with wide eyed, breathless abandon and wanted nothing more than to exactly like his old man.
“Dad?” Worry tarnishes the ten year old’s voice; eyes darkening and narrowing as he observes the sight in front of him. “What’s going on? What…?”
“Nothing, mate. Your mum and I were just having a chat. She just got a little...worked up.”
“About what?” He finally approaches, a hand on the back of his mother’s chair as he leans in to check on her. “What were you guys talking about?”
“Just some adult stuff. Your mum’s just a little emotional today.”
“Mummy?” TJ lays a palm on her shoulder, gently squeezing and then pressing a kiss to her cheek. “Are you okay? What happened? What..?”
“I’m alright,” Esme assures him, and turns her face into his, pecking his lips. “Daddy and I were just talking and…”
“You don’t look alright. You’re crying. Why are you crying?” A mixture of panic, worry, and the beginnings of anger creep into his voice. And he fixes his father with a steely glare. “What’s wrong with mum? Why is she crying? What were you talking about that would upset her?”
“Just a couple serious things,” Tyler informs him. “ADULT things. Things you don’t need to worry about.”
TJ’s jaw clenches. “What did you do to her?”
“I didn’t do anything. Why would you…?”
“Daddy didn’t do a thing,” Esme assures him. “Like he said we were having a chat and things turned a little serious and I got emotional. That’s it. He didn’t do anything or say anything wrong. I got upset and I started to cry and he was just trying to comfort me. That’s it.”
“Are you sure? ‘Cause if something else happened…”
Turning sideways in her chair, she clasps her son’s face in her hand. “Tyler James. Listen to what I’m saying. Daddy did nothing wrong. I started crying and he got worried and he was trying to calm me down. He didn’t say or do anything. He was trying to help. He wanted to cheer me up. That’s all.”
“Mummy…”
“That’s all,” she insists. “I appreciate you worrying about me, but we’re telling the truth. I just got emotional about some things we were talking about. That’s all. Daddy would never...EVER...do anything to make me cry. Unless it’s happy tears.”
TJ sighs heavily. “If you’re sure…”
“I’m sure. But thank you.,” she presses a kiss to his lips and smooths a hand over his unruly hair. “I’m okay, baby man. There is nothing for you to worry about, okay? And good morning, by the way. Thought for sure you’d sleep in a lot longer; all the running around you did after the littlest yesterday.”
“Dad said we could go surfing. Before everyone else got up. I set my alarm.”
“Well the water looks perfect today. Or as you would say, the waves looking ‘bitchin’.”
Excitement replaces worry and simmering anger. “Dad checked the surf report last night. They said it was going to be perfect conditions. And that it could just be us. I like when it’s just us. It’s a lot more fun. And we sit on our boards and talk. A lot.”
“Then I’ll let you guys get to it. I’m sure you have a lot of boy stuff to talk about.”
Tyler pushes himself to his feet as his wife slips out of her chair; hand on the small of her back as she stands. “You good?”
“I’m good,” she assures him, standing on her tiptoes to return his kiss. “I’ll take the dirty stuff in and I’ll grab some towels and throw them out here for you guys. And maybe I’ll even crash on the couch; until the rest of the hoodlums wake up.”
“If you need anything, you know where to find us.”
“I’ll be fine, Tae. Everything will be fine.”
Nodding in agreement, he offers a small smile and presses his lips to her temple. Watching as she gathers the dirty dishes, mugs, and cutlery and carries them into the house. TJ gallantly holding the door open for her; a broad, beaming smile spreading across his face as she plants a kiss on his cheek.
“IS mum okay?” The ten year old turns to him once Esme is out of ear shot.
“She’s fine, mate. She’s just going through some stuff.”
“Bad stuff or…?”
“Just some stuff. Nothing you need to worry about. You’re mum’s alright. And you know I’d never hurt her, yeah? That I would never...ever...say or do anything to break her heart. Tell me you know that.”
“I do. But you used to. Do stuff like that. I know I was just little then, but…”
“I’m not that guy anymore, TJ. I haven’t been him in a long time. I would never hurt your mother. I love her in ways you can’t even begin to understand. And I would do anything to make her happy and to keep her safe.”
“Is there a reason to? Keep her safe?”
“No,” Tyler lies. “There’s not.”
*****
From the moment he first held Austin in his arms, Tyler had pictured these moments; introducing his son to surfing and forming a tremendous bond over their shared love of the water. Teaching him how to not only handle the waves, but to give himself over to the release and the escape that comes not with conquering them, but being submissive to them; gliding smoothly and confidently yet remembering that nature always has the upper hand and should never be questioned or underestimated. When he had first found out he was going to be a father, he’d often daydream about sharing his passions with his offspring; surfing, fishing, hiking, and camping trips. But military life had been all consuming, as had been his commitment to it; putting fighting the battles of others higher on his list of priorities than his wife and soon to be born child. And having the baby home hadn’t changed a damn thing; signing up for extra tours whenever he got the chance, putting his be all and end all into the army and having nothing left to give his family.
For his fifth birthday, he’d gifted Austin with two things; a custom made surfboard and the promise that he’d change his ways and become the dad that his kiddo needed and deserved. Neither of things ever came to fruition; Austin diagnosed with cancer just three weeks later and the board going unused and Tyler’s promise dying the moment the news had been dropped into their laps. And when Austin had died, so had all of the dreams and the hopes that Tyler had had as father; the loss tremendous and robbing him of both his heart and soul. The grief composed of many things. Not just the loss of his boy, but of all of those expectations, and fantasized moments, and the memories that would have been made during them.
He never dreamed that he’d ever be a father again; his marriage and his military career both disintegrating and finding him throwing himself headlong into mercenary life and a battle with booze and drug addiction. Wracked with so much guilt, regret, and profound grief that he truly believed he deserved his self imposed exile from the rest of humanity. He was a monster and not deserving of any form of a normal life; taking the most dire and dangerous of jobs in hopes one would kill him, drinking and popping pills in hopes of not just numbing the physical pain, but the mental anguish as well.
In the blink of an eye and in the midst of his deepest and darkest moments of suicidal ideation, everything changed. In the form of a tiny, tattooed and pierced brunette with the most beautiful smile and dark eyes he’d ever seen. Since then, every blessing has come with great sacrifice. Ones that he’s willing to pay over, and over, and over again for even a slice of the life that he has now. It’s a normalcy that isn’t normally rewarded to guys like him; a wife and children and a beautiful home in an even more beautiful place. So many bridges burned and toes trampled upon; exuberant coin in your pocket in exchange for scars that litter your body and enemies within all four corners of the world. It’s generally a short existence; catching a bullet in the midst of all the action or a bodyguard or a mercenary -contracted to take you out- catching you by surprise. Most never even attempt any form of domesticity; preferring the company of random women -or men- instead of committing and settling down. The job follows you. Stays with you. Remains embedded in your soul. Accompanied by long lists of evil people you’ve crossed and will forever seek revenge, debts that you can never repay and will forever be held over your head, and addiction and mental health issues. You’re never fully away from it; it will follow you wherever you go, keep you up at night, have you constantly looking over your shoulder or being wary of the smallest of bumps in the night. It’s easier to not get someone else tangled up in the madness; half the time it’s hard just to keep yourself alive, let alone a spouse and children. They’d be the first to pay the price for your misdeeds, and bringing them into that kind of world would be considered not just risky, but selfish as fuck.
Sometimes he still sees himself that way; a weakened, pathetic version of himself that opted to put targets on the backs of others instead of just dealing with his issues and his loneliness in a healthier, SOLO way. But love had found him. Somehow. In the midst of all the darkness and ruin and decay of his life, something...someone... so beautiful and bright had stumbled into his path. She’d effortlessly and easily saw past the hardened and fearless facade he’d created through an endless cycle of self loathing, sorrow, and regret; slowly chipping away at the walls he’d built around the remains of his heart and making him feel alive again. Opening his eyes to a different future and sparking a longing and a desperation and a hunger that he had felt to his very soul. Wanting her...ALL of her...in a way he’d never wanted anyone else. Trusting her in a way he hadn’t since the death of his mother; finding himself both soothed and ignited by the compassion in her voice, the kindness in her eyes, and the gentleness of her hands whenever she touched him.
His heart had been hers long before he’d ever gotten the nerve to tell her so. And he’d been both terrified and filled with hope when he’d even dare to think about a life...a future...with her. He has always felt that his time with her has been far more than he deserves; that kind of existence reserved for those who are morally stronger AND superior. But for some reason, fate had smiled upon him; giving a woman that so plainly wears her heart upon her sleeve and remains stalwartly devoted and faithful. Bearing him seven...eventually eight...children and building a home and a life beyond anything he could have ever imagined.
He’d spent the better part of an hour feeling tremendously grateful and unabashedly proud as he’d watched part of that life so confidently handling the waves below and around him. Ten years old but sometimes so wise and mature beyond his years; misunderstood by so many and not given the credit or the attention that he so rightfully deserves. A fearless, tough kid with an enormous heart; so much love caught up inside him that he’s sometimes unable to express or even cope with it. Exploring the world and the elements with near reckless abandon; always looking for adventure and forever staring challenge straight in the eye. And it’s bittersweet; the act of making the memories with THIS son that his mind had created with for the boy he’d lost years before.
“What do you think it feels like?” TJ asks, as they sit side by side. A hundred yards from shore where the water is calmer; perched upon their boards with their legs dangling over the sides. “To get bit by a shark.”
Tyler glances over; noticing small inklings of his wife inside the ten year old. The way his namesake tilts his head to the side and his eyes narrow as he contemplates a question. The smooth bridge of the nose and the shape of his jaw. But he’s definitely a ‘chip off the old block’; the brilliant blue eyes and the broad shoulders and the long, lanky body, the cheeky smirk and the smile that brightens his entire face. And there’s more. So much more. A strikingly similar personality; dry witted and quick with the sarcasm and the smart ass comments. And the temper; volatile and unpredictable, always seeming as if it’s on a permanent, slow boil.
“I don’t know, mate. But I can guarantee that it does NOT feel good.”
“Mick Fanning...the surfer that mum likes...he got attacked by one. During a competition. A great white. Hit him right in the face with its tail! Can you imagine? I would have been shitting bricks for sure! It would be kind of cool to see one, though. We’ve only ever seen a couple of dorsals in the water. When we’ve been hanging out on the beach. Kinda weird we’ve NEVER come across one.”
“I’d rather not if it’s all the same to you. I’ve spotted a few in my time. Long before you were even a twinkle in your mumma’s eyes. Wasn’t close enough to go one on one with ‘em. Thank Christ.”
“Sometimes I get this really weird feeling in my stomach. When we’re out here. It’s like something is just moving around in there; kicking at your insides and tugging at them and stuff. Like my body is telling me that there’s something underneath me. Maybe even WATCHING me. You ever get something like that? Where you just KNOW something is there?”
“Had that happen a lot. Always been too chicken shit to look down, though.”
“I like that, you know. That you’re not afraid to admit you’re scared of things. Lots of guys are. They act all big and bad and like nothing bothers them, but you know it’s all bullshit. You’ve never been like that. Even since I was little. You’ve always talked about being scared of things and how it’s okay to be afraid of stuff. And that we shouldn’t be embarrassed to get emotional. Cry and stuff. Do you still feel that way?”
“I do. I feel even stronger about it now. Nothing wrong with a guy being vulnerable. Doesn’t make them weak or pathetic or less of a man.”
TJ grins over at him. “Just makes them human.”
“You know, you sound a hell of a lot like your mum sometimes.”
“That’s a good thing, if you ask me. ‘Cause mum’s pretty awesome.”
“Yeah…” Tyler smiles wistfully, then glances towards the shore; his wife up from her nap and getting the littles settled for breakfast on the deck as the older kid’s lend a hand. “...she certainly is.”
TJ’s expression turns serious. “You meant it, right? When you said you didn’t say or do anything to make mum cry.”
“Everything we both told you was the truth; we were talking about some adult stuff and she got emotional. All I was trying to do was comfort her. That’s it. You know how your mum can be; when she’s feeling overwhelmed and hasn’t been sleeping well and she tries to take too much on.”
“She needs to learn how to rely on other people . And ask for help when she needs it.”
“It’s hard for her. Even after all the years she’s been with me. She finds it difficult to ask for help. Guess she’s so used to people letting her down, that she just can’t shake that part of her. We’ll just keep an eye on her and just chip in where we need to and hope for the best, yeah?”
TJ nods, then gives a bashful smile. “I’m sorry, dad. For kinda flipping out on you earlier. But I saw you kneeling in front of mummy and then I could tell she was crying and my brain just immediately went to think you’d done something wrong.”
“We’re a lot like, you and I. In a lot of ways. I tend to react a little too quickly, a little too soon. Old habits die hard. But I would never…EVER...hurt your mum. That is the last thing I want to do. Intentional or not. I love her, mate. In ways you can’t even understand. In ways I can’t even understand sometimes. I just hope that one day you get to feel that way about someone. Or close to it.”
“I just worry about her,” TJ sighs. “I don’t like when she’s upset. Especially when she cries. I hate seeing it; mummy sad. I wish I could find a way so she’d never be sad EVER again. Wouldn’t that be nice? If we could find a way to make sure mummy NEVER got sad again?”
“Yeah, mate. It would. But life isn’t like that. We gotta go through the good AND the bad. Unfortunately.”
“Mum’s been through a lot. I mean, I know you have too. But mum...I don’t know...she’s different. She’s...well...she’s my mum. I know you’re tough and strong and brave and all that. That you can handle things better. But mum puts on a good show for people I think. She lets on that she’s okay and she’s totally fine with taking care of everything one else. But sometimes? Sometimes I don’t think she’s okay at all. Do you ever think that? That she’s just pretending to be alright?”
“I don’t just don’t think. I know she’s doing it. And believe me, I’ve tried to get her out of it. But your mum…”
“And she has the nerve to call US stubborn? She is way worse.”
“She’s got a hard head,” Tyler agrees. “And in some ways, it’s a good thing. She never gave up on me. Even when everyone around her was telling her she should. She just ignored them. Had my back no matter what other people said.”
“It’s ‘cause she loves you. And you’re the first person to ever really love her. Other than her dad and he died when she was young, so ....” TJ rakes a hand through his wet hair. “...sometimes it must feel like it’s just you and mum against the world, huh?”
“I’ve felt that way. A few times. But then all you guys started coming along and our team got even bigger. I like to think we ALL have each other’s backs.”
“Of course we do. We’re family. We’re all in this together. And we’re Rakes. Means we’re tough and we don’t back down. From anyone or anything. We might be scared, but we’re still standing up for what’s right. That’s what you taught us. That even though we might be afraid, we gotta do the right thing. Always. A man isn’t measured by the things he has, but by the people he’s helped.”
Tyler grins. “Where’d you hear that?”
“I read it in a book at school. One of the grade eight kids left on the playground and I was bored and I found it and I just started reading it. I guess I liked that line for some reason. It stuck in my head. Even if there isn't much else up there.”
“Don’t you do that,” Tyler gently scolds. “I don’t want to EVER hear you do that. Talk shit about yourself.”
TJ frowns. “It’s kinda hard when everyone around you is doing it.”
“At school?”
He nods. “I’m the dumb, crazy kid. That’s what everyone thinks. Especially the teachers.”
“They ever say that to you?”
“Not to my face. But I walked by the staff room once and they were talking about that ‘Rake kid’. About how he’ll probably end up in juvenile detention by the time he’s thirteen. And in and out of jail when he’s older. You can’t tell me that it was about Takota or Declan. I might be stupid, but I’m not THAT stupid.”
“You’re not stupid at all. And I don’t want you ever calling yourself that again. You just need some help. Find different ways to learn. Not everyone learns the same way. I was like you in school; couldn’t focus, got ignored when I asked for help, that turned into me goofing off or getting frustrated. Lots of times I put a fist into a locker or a wall. A LOT.”
“Is that why you didn’t go to college? Like mum? Is that why you went into the military?”
“I suppose that’s part of it. Guess I liked the danger and adventure of it too. Going off and fighting bad guys and getting to shoot guns and all of that shit. Never thought about actually having to kill people and what that would feel like.”
“What does it feel like?”
“Not good, mate. Not good at all.”
“Even if it’s bad people? Like that Nathan that hurt you?”
“People like him are exceptions. But for the most part? I don’t like doing it. Not even if it’s in the course of helping someone else. But sometimes…”
“You gotta do what you gotta do,” his son finishes for him. “Sometimes it’s you or them, right?”
“Exactly. And don’t worry about school, alright? I’ll give them a call. Ask for a meeting. Get things sorted and get you the help you need. And deserve.”
“Man…” TJ grins. “...they are going to shit their pants when they hear from you.”
Tyler reaches out to ruffle his namesake’s hair. “Maybe. Hungry?”
“I could eat.”
“Wanna head in? See what mum’s cooking up?”
“I don’t know." The ten year old's nose crinkles in disgust. "Do you think it’ll be edible?”
“Is it ever?”
TJ laughs. “Dad…”
“Whatever you do, do NOT tell her I said that.”
“Don’t worry…” Leaning across his board, the ten year old wraps both arms around one of Tyler’s; squeezing tightly and laying his head against his dad’s shoulder. “...your secret’s safe with me.”

(时空中的绘旅人—For All Time—) 司岚 SR 「欧洲纪行」 Clarence SR [Journey to Europe] Painting Story Translation: Of the Stonehenge and the Acropolis
*For All Time Master-list / Clarence’s Personal Master-list *Spoiler free: Translations will remain under cut *Card is from the [Ruins & Civilizations] series. *Yes, Clarence speaks really good English...
“Telling a story of a distant place.”
From England to Europe, he's just like a walking encyclopedia. But it's Clarence, so I suppose perfection is the norm; right?
Tumblr media
Three weeks later, I got my Visa and started my journey to Ancient Civilization.
First, I'll fly to Europe.
The first stop will be the prehistoric site of the United Kingdom.
⊹ ˚✩ ━━━━━━━ ∘◦ ✥ ◦∘ ━━━━━━━ ✩˚ ⊹
Tumblr media
Regret didn't truly strike until I reached Stonehenge, and it did. Hard.
Being part of a TV Program wasn’t any sort of holiday at all; the work schedule starts the very moment we take off, and there wasn’t much time to rest either.
Starting last afternoon, we'd taken a plane to the airport in London, Heathrow, flying through the large part of the night; and then followed up with a bus ride to Wiltshire before we could even regain our bearings.
I felt a little dizzy and faint just gazing upon this large pile of rocks under the scorching rays of the sun…
Tumblr media
▷Choice: Jet-lag sucks…
Despite having fallen asleep on the plane here, the jet lag still made me rather uncomfortable…
Tumblr media
▷Choice: Long-distance flights suck…
The air was too stagnant for my taste, given that it was a long-distance flight. Plus, the economy-class seats were way too narrow. Hence, I didn’t sleep well at night...
Thinking about it now, Emerald had truly taken care of me well during all of my previous trips abroad. He’d buy me a flight ticket under the business-class, and even reserve plenty of time before the actual trip itself, enough so that I could recover from the jet lag.
I read the lines of the script that was to be recorded for the TV filming in a dead tone.
MC: Stonehenge is a renowned prehistoric monument made of bluestones in Europe. It was built between 4000~2000 BC, spanning an area of around 11 square meters…
Thankfully, my main job was painting. If I had to memorize this entire script, I'm afraid I'd fall asleep way before any of these words stuck to my brain…
⊹ ˚✩ ━━━━━━━ ∘◦ ✥ ◦∘ ━━━━━━━ ✩˚ ⊹
Tumblr media
With that in mind, I snuck a glance over at Clarence, who was preparing to be on camera.
I heard that he'd come to Europe once during high school as an exchange student, and that his English capabilities were exceptional.
Hence, that was why he was in charge of explaining the whole story of the Ancient European Civilization.
⊹ ˚✩ ━━━━━━━ ∘◦ ✥ ◦∘ ━━━━━━━ ✩˚ ⊹
Tumblr media
He listened intently to the Director's instructions, smiling as he stepped before the lens.
Clarence held an information booklet as he started delving into the explanation in front of Stonehenge.
What happened was truly something out of the realms of my expectations. Clarence had started with a paragraph of English narration.
Tumblr media
Clarence: What can it be?
Clarence: The place was all doors and pillars, some connected above by continuous architraves.
Clarence: It is Stonehenge! Older than the centuries; older than the d'Urbervilles.
⊹ ˚✩ ━━━━━━━ ∘◦ ✥ ◦∘ ━━━━━━━ ✩˚ ⊹
Tumblr media
Clarence: In one of Britain's masterpieces, "Tess of the d'Urbervilles", this was the final destination of the runaway, Tess.
Clarence: The farmer girl Tess, who believed in god, laid to sleep peacefully atop the remains of the Altar built by the Druids.
Clarence: It is so solemn and lonely— after my great happiness with nothing but the sky above my face.
Clarence: It is at the very end of life, that all prayers, regrets, and pain comes to an end. Tess laid atop the Altar built by the Druids with only the sky above her head.
Clarence: That's right. This is the place where Tess had laid to sleep, entering a peaceful slumber. The people of ancient times had built their Altar here more than 2000 BC ago.
Clarence: As time passed, people started believing in the other gods and speaking other languages. Yet, the story of the vast sky that hung overhead and the towering rocks, are something that has been passed down from generation to generation...
Using "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" as an intro, Clarence delved into the main explanation of Stonehenge.
He subtly turned the topic back around, explaining the significance of Stonehenge in the histories of both architecture and astronomy alike.
He walked into the center of the stone monument as he spoke, explaining the principal axis of the pillars that made the Stonehenge. And about how the old path would fall in line with the morning sun of the summer solstice.
Meanwhile, the other two pillars paint in the direction of where the sun sets during the winter solstice.
Clarence's explanations were simple and easy to understand. It was intriguing enough that even I got enthralled by it despite how sleepy I initially felt.
Director: Amazing! Truly amazing! Your speech is way better than the script, Clarence!
Director: St. Shelter's University really did find a competent and suitable person for the job!
⊹ ˚✩ ━━━━━━━ ∘◦ ✥ ◦∘ ━━━━━━━ ✩˚ ⊹
Tumblr media
I finally got the chance to talk to Clarence upon returning to the hotel in the afternoon.
He told me that he liked this whole plan about the Ancient Civilizations because he was once an exchange student here in Europe; hence, his familiarity with the European Ruins. He said that these ruins had managed to witness human civilization; and that this world only became much more interesting due to the footprints that humans leave behind.
——This view of his was similarly shared by Emerald himself.
Clarence: I was actually the one who suggested the next site to the Director and his team.
I glanced at the plane ticket.
MC: Athens, Greece…? Are we going to see the Acropolis?
Tumblr media
▷Choice: Athens is where the European Civilization originated from!
MC: The European Civilization originated from Greek. And I heard that the Acropolis of Athens is a marvelous historical place to behold.
Tumblr media
▷Choice: I once saw a show called “Saint X”...
MC: I once saw a show where all the Saints of X lived within a sanctuary, which happened to be the Acropolis.
MC: So, I think that the Acropolis should be a marvelous relic of history!
Clarence smiled wordlessly.
Clarence: You'll know once you get there.
⊹ ˚✩ ━━━━━━━ ∘◦ ✥ ◦∘ ━━━━━━━ ✩˚ ⊹
After a day’s rest, we flew off towards Athens, Greece.
Tumblr media
We then took a ferry from Piraeus Port to Rhode Island.
MC: I can’t believe that the Acropolis isn’t the historical relic of Greece… Fine. I should have known. I mean, you were smiling! But you never did reply to me...
MC: Still, how strange. What other historical remains are there on Rhode Island that are more valuable than the Acropolis itself?
Clarence: The Acropolis is indeed the largest ruin in Greece. However, I personally doubt that the ruins of civilization need to be shown through such grandeur.
⊹ ˚✩ ━━━━━━━ ∘◦ ✥ ◦∘ ━━━━━━━ ✩˚ ⊹
Tumblr media
I was absolutely dumbfounded when Clarence walked right back to Rhode Island’s Port.
There was nothing else here… Other than the ordinary port and Castle erected by the later generations.
Clarence took one glance at the script before turning back up to face the cameras while explaining.
Clarence: This is Rhode Island. Standing here now, I can only see the peaceful harbor and the buildings built by the later generations.
Clarence: In 282 BC, a bronze statue of Helios, the Greek God of the Sun, was erected here. However, the statue was destroyed by an earthquake a mere 56 years later.
Clarence: Though it lasted for only a short period, it was still long enough for it to be recognized by Antipater, a traveler of the old, as one of the “Seven Wonders of the World”
Clarence explained about "Rhode Island's Sun God Statue". Based on his description, it was a colossal statue that towered at the height of 33 meters. It was made entirely out of bronze. The torch in its hand acted as a lighthouse, and its two feet, each on one end of the shore, served as the Port’s entryway.
⊹ ˚✩ ━━━━━━━ ∘◦ ✥ ◦∘ ━━━━━━━ ✩˚ ⊹
Based on Clarence’s descriptions of the place, I let my thoughts wander, bringing me to Ancient Europe. The grand statue seemingly reappeared before my eyes.
Tumblr media
I raised my head to look at the statue. It stood between the blue sky and the sea, the torch in its hand blazing furiously, lighting the way for any passing ships and directing them towards the harbor...
⊹ ˚✩ ━━━━━━━ ∘◦ ✥ ◦∘ ━━━━━━━ ✩˚ ⊹
Tumblr media
Clarence: After the fateful earthquake, the ruins of what remained of the God of the Sun laid there in silence for another thousand years.
Clarence: After that, Rhode Island was conquered by the Arabs, and the remains of the statue smuggled to Syria. The site of glory that was once behold became no more.
Clarence: Mankind creates miracles, yet destroys them all the same.
Clarence: We create prosperity alongside the development of Civilization, yet at the same time, we destroy what’s beautiful and well in light of our greed and desire.
I now know why he’d suggested Rhode Island instead for the filming location for the “European Civilization”.
The Acropolis was the origin of European Civilization.
However, the statue of the God of the Sun in Rhode Island tells us all, that no matter what Civilization it may be, it can all just be as easily erased by the hands of the very humans who built it.

Alex Final Wars 2: Dark Alex, Chapter 39 - Before The Storm
"So what did you guys get out of the stuff we pulled from that Chinese base? One that was apparently supposed to be impenetrable." Nick asked before muttering to himself. "Heh, they were no match for this sly fox."
"We went to hell and back to get that stuff," Judy said.
"Thing is… we don't know yet," Jack responded. "There was a lot of information on those maps and papers you guys pulled. It will take time for the eggheads to go through it all."
"I have to say I really respect the analysts," Skye noted. "I mean, how much stuff have they looked at from just Heroes alone?"
The four mammals were sitting in Jack and Skye's Aston Martin as they drove through the busy Zootopian streets. Nick and Judy were in the back seats while the two ZIA agents sat upfront. All around the car, mammals moved and went about their business as the city entered the evening. Most mammals were probably heading home as the sky began to dim. While others were getting ready for a night on the town.
"You guys over at Heroes have recovered a ton of intelligence throughout this war." Jack said, "Servers, documents, maps. Knowledge is power."
"Yeah, that is true," Judy responded. "I can't believe how much action we've seen. This is a lot more than a normal day at the ZPD."
"Hey, sometimes things are pretty action-packed at the ZPD," Nick said. "There's a lot of dangerous crooks and thieves out there. Though none of them as crafty and talented as this sly fox."
This got a chuckle out of Judy.
"And here we are!" Jack said.
The car pulled into a parking lot of a one-story building with Japanese architecture. The walls were made of white-colored stone with wooden support pillars, covered by a pagoda-style roof made of matte green tiles. Mounted on the front wall was a red and white light-up sign that said:
"Tanukchi, Japanese Grill."
"Well, we'll certainly be eating good tonight!" Nick said, the four mammals stepping out of the car.
"Isn't this place pretty high-end?" Skye asked. "How did you get a reservation?"
"Well… heh…" a slightly mischievous look crossed Judy's face. "I may have let it slip that we were brave ZPD officers, and you two were selfless ZIA agents."
"Clever bunny," Nick said.
"And… I may have also mentioned that we were war heroes."
Sky and Jack laughed.
"Well, at least you got us a nice dinner," Jack said before the group headed inside the restaurant.
Inside the building, the walls were made of wood and paper, resembling traditional Japanese walls. However, there were also support pillars made of marble-like, red-colored rock with messy streaks of white running through it. A short distance from the two glass doors was a desk made out of bamboo, behind which was a fish tank teeming with aquatic life. The entire restaurant was filled with the sounds of people chatting and the metal clang of cooking equipment being used.
"Reservation for Hopps," Judy said to the fox behind the desk, prompting the mammal to check her computer.
"Hopps…. Ah! Right, this way!" The fox said, grabbing four menus and leading the two couples into the dining area. There were 4 grills, 2 for smaller mammals, 2 for larger mammals, set up in the dining area, each surrounded by stained wooden chairs. Above each grill was a vent to the outside. On the walls of the room were paintings of trees and natural landscapes.
The waitress handed out menus as the group sat down at a grill for smaller mammals. "Would you like to order your drinks now?"
Nick got a soda while Jack went for an ice tea. Judy had carrot juice, and Skye got water. The fox waitress left to get their drinks and appetizers.
"You know, it kind of surprises me how quickly life has got back to normal here," Skye said. The fox looked around at the families and groups laughing and enjoying their meals. "You would never have thought that a short time ago, this city was under assault by the Chinese military."
"I know," Judy said. "It's almost like a distant memory to everyone. But I suppose they're just looking ahead towards a brighter future."
"And the future is bright," Jack said. "We're really pressing hard on the PLA now. But regarding what you said, there are plans to make a memorial to commemorate the Chinese attacks on the city. The full-scale assault, the airship strike, and the concert."
"Well, I hope that helps the citizens of Zootopia remember what happened. And that we must be vigilant against those who want to hurt us."
"Hmm… well, we should get some fried rice," Nick said, perusing over the menu.
"Heh, thinking with your stomach, I see." Judy chuckled.
"I agree," Jack responded. "let's get some fried rice."
The waitress returned with drinks, as well as salads and miso soups for everyone. She also took their orders for meals.
"A chef will be with you shortly."
The waitress left, and the group began to enjoy their appetizers.
"Wow, this is really good," Jack said, trying the salad.
"Hopps told me this place is highly rated," Nick said, sipping the soup. "You did a good job getting us this reservation."
"I agree." Skye said, "thank you, Judy."
Judy smiled "aww, guys are too sweet."
A few moments later, a tanuki wearing a traditional chef's uniform came over to the grill with a small cart of ingredients and tools.
"Hello! Welcome!" The chef said, going over the group's order. "Let's get started!"
The tanuki started up the grill and began to cook the various vegetables for the fried rice. Skye took out her phone and captured the exciting moment in a video while the chef performed tricks. He spun his spatula and tools around in his hand and juggled an egg for the rice.
The chef then set up an onion volcano, filled it with edible oils, and lit it on fire. A tower of flame shot out of the small volcano, eliciting gasps from the officers and agents watching the show.
"Dinner and a show," Skye said.
The tanuki chef finished the fried rice, taking a small portion of the rice on his spatula and launching it in the air towards Jack. The rabbit opened his mouth to catch it, but it just bounced off his nose onto the floor.
The chef tried again, & this time Jack caught the portion of rice in his mouth. All the while, the other mammals laughed and watched the spectacle.
The tanuki then launched a portion of rice at Nick, who managed to catch it in his mouth on the first try.
Judy laughed clapped a little as Nick looked smug that he got it first try.
"We should hang out more often," Jack said as the chef began to serve the fried rice.
"I agree. It's just that we've been busy lately." Nick chimed in. "But when the four of us hang out, it's always fun."

"Come on, Toothdee, you'll enjoy it!" Laval said. "Arcades are fun. Although in Chima the arcades are usually less tech-savvy… but… same principles apply."
"I don't know…." Toothdee said, looking over some maps and papers in her room. "The end of this war is in sight, and I want to focus on my work so we can make the final decisive push to end this conflict once and for all."
"Hey, we've got them on the backfoot." Eris said, "besides, we're on shore leave right now. It's not the time to work. It's time to rest and recuperate."
"Yeah, you can't just keep fighting constantly. Evening though I do think that would be fun, you'll get worn out." Laval noted.
"Oh, alright, fine." The Heroes commander said, getting up from her desk and grabbing her phone and wallet. "Let's go."
"Great!" Eris said. "Laval spotted a place just down the road, within walking distance."
"Well, lead the way, Laval."
The trio left the typhoon and headed out of the guarded compound where the airship landed. The landing zone was in the city, giving Heroes good access to any part of Zootopia they needed to reach in the event of an emergency.
However it was not right in the center of the city, instead situated near the airport. This was to avoid buildings acting as flying obstructions and to cut down on noise pollution.
"You guys really love exploring Zootopia, don't you? Getting out and seeing the sights." Toothdee said as they walked.
"Totally!" Eris said. "It's a gorgeous city. I can see why Nick and Judy love it here."
"Yeah, I love exploring, so it's great to get a whole new city to explore!"
After a few minutes of walking, the group arrived at a building with big glass windows and a bright blue sign that said "arcade" on the front.
The inside of the building was dark, lit mainly through light from gaming machines. The air was filled with the sounds of said machines. Various boops and chimes were used to attract customer's attention. The floor was covered in a dark blue carpet, and a tired-looking mountain lion sat at a desk near the door.
The trio walked over to the desk, and the mountain lion didn't flinch upon seeing an evolved eagle.
"Hi, can we each get a card with $30 on it, please?" Toothdee said, "that seems reasonable, right?"
"Works for me," Eris said.
Each member of the group took out the required money and placed it on the counter. The cashier nodded and quickly transferred the money to 3 plastic cards that could be used to purchase games from the machines.
"Thank you," Laval said, the group heading towards the machines.
"What are you going to play first?" Toothdee asked.
"Uh… hm, well, I've seen this before," Laval said, walking over to a skeeball machine. "Now Chima does have games like this."
"I'll play against you!" Eris said, standing in front of a second Skee-ball device next to Laval.
"Alright! Your on!"
The couple slid their cards through readers on the machines, and balls were dispensed in return. As the two started rolling the hard plastic skeeballs down the length of the device, Toothdee went to examine some other games.
She spotted an arcade game with a large screen, and fake plastic guns hooked up to it. Across the top of the machine were the words "Terminator" along with a scary-looking robot head. Toothdee went over to the arcade machine and paid for a game before picking up one of the weapons. She could also keep her skills sharp while having fun.
The young warrior selected a level and began. Terminator robots appeared on screen and engaged. But toothdee fired the toy weapon at the screen, and the terminators in-game were struck down by gunfire.
As her character continued to move through the game world, gunning down robots, toothdee heard Laval and Eris behind her.
"Yes!" The eagle said. "I win! Don't worry, I know you let me win on purpose."
"I thought YOU were going to let ME win." Laval chuckled.
The pair came over to watch Toothdee, who continued to gun down terminators, even as her own player character took damage. Eventually, a game over screen appeared, and toothdee put the plastic toy gun back down on the machine.
"You know what's funny is most of the stuff here we can do for real," Laval said. "That motorcycle racing game over there? I can just hop on my speedor. That game you were playing where you shoot robots? You could just get a gun and charge into battle!"
"Heh, well, why don't you do that then?" Toothdee asked.
"Well, fighting can be fun. But it's nice just to do it… what's the word I'm looking for… Fictitiously! Without any worries, where you just have to get points."
"Alright, I can understand that. Now, what do you want to play next?" Toothdee said, turning towards the rows of game cabinets. "You guys were right. It is good to get out and relax once in a while."

Haida looked at a map on his phone and struggled to figure out where he was in relation to the roads and structures on the map.
"I'm telling you it's this way," Fabienne said, pointing down a roadway. "Trust me, I know this city."
"But it looks like it's this way on the map!" Haida said, pointing down a different street."
"It's not! Your just looking at it wrong!"
"Retsuko, what do you think?"
The red panda, who had been patiently watching the two argue, looked at Haida's phone. The hyena smirked, expecting his girlfriend to agree with him. Plus, he was pretty confident his examination of the map was correct.
"Hmmm…." Retsuko said, "I think Fabienne is right."
Haida's jaw dropped while Fabienne smirked.
"Alright then, this way."
The snow leopard started walking down the street, Haida and Retsuko in tow.
Haida looked a bit down that he was wrong, but Retsuko gave him a playful jab to cheer him up.
Eventually, the group arrived at a large stone building situated by the coast. The American flag was flying on a pole outside. There was a large wooden sign reading "Zootopia World War 2 Museum."
"Told you," Fabienne said.
The trio went inside, where a bunny attendant was waiting in a booth near the entrance.
"Hi! 3 please, general admission." Retsuko said.
The trio paid for their tickets and entered the museum, which was not very crowded. The rooms were filled with equipment, posters, flags, pictures, all from the Second World War.
Pictures of troopers in combat. Guns those soldiers would have used. Maps of the battle formations they would have been in.
Retsuko and Haida went over to a giant wall of black marble. Upon which were carved the names of soldiers from Zootopia who had distinguished themselves in combat during WW2. Above the wall was a black and white mural of US Soldiers of many different species.
Fabienne was busy looking at an exhibit about war correspondents during the Second World War. There was an old camera on display, articles published by war reporters, and photographs of correspondents. This sort of thing was right up her alley.
"It's amazing how much we've progressed," Fabienne said, looking at old photography equipment. She spotted an old camera that was a lot bigger than her phone and probably could only photograph in black and white.
The snow leopard moved on to a small exhibit that contained mannequins of different mammals in combat gear. There was a small video screen playing a video comparing the biological system of various mammals as soldiers.
"Humans make the best soldiers." Said a disembodied voice on the video, as the picture changed to show a human soldier on a long trek in the desert. "They have unmatched endurance and survival skills. Not to mention their skills in combat have been continuously refined and improved over millennia, in the many wars and battles fought by humans."
"Maybe that's why a human is the leader of Heroes," Fabienne asked herself.
"This does not mean other species are incapable of waging war. Many other types of mammals serve in specialist roles."
A picture of a Russian polar bear in arctic camouflage appeared on the screen as the announcer continued.
"Polar bears and other arctic mammals make good soldiers for sub-zero environments."
The screen changed again, showing a picture of a cheetah soldier.
"While cheetahs and Pronghorns make good couriers, depending on the distance being traveled."
The snow leopard found this fascinating. Every species was unique in some way.
The ZNN reporter moved to rejoin Haida and Retsuko. They were looking at an exhibit about imperial Japan and the war in the pacific.
"Wow, look at that," Retsuko said, examining a model of a US aircraft carrier.
Haida and Fabienne looked at a map of battle formations around an island, complete with pictures of soldiers.
One photo showed Japanese troops digging trenches around the island as defenses. Another picture showed US pilots getting into planes and preparing to launch from the deck of a carrier. A third picture showed US marines charging against stubborn and dug-in Japanese pillboxes on a hill, firing down at a beach.
"My God, it's so reminiscent of the current war," Fabienne noted, looking at another image of American and Japanese warships engaging each other as planes crisscrossed the sky.
"I know…" Retsuko said, "I mean, we're fighting in the pacific, with warships and planes. I guess history repeats itself."
"What I find amazing..." Haida said, "the US and Japan used to be such bitter enemies, and now they are great allies."
"Yep, it only goes to show you how things can change with time," Fabienne responded.
"Here we are, mammals from Japan, doing an important role in a US military organization," Retsuko said. "And there is no place I'd rather be."
The three mammals continued through the museum. Examining the past and how it could tell them about the present and future.

JayJay was in her cabin on the typhoon, putting away some clothes she had just washed. The wolf put a dress on a hanger, hanging it in the closet, before turning her attention to some stockings and a few shirts.
As the young hero finished putting her clothes away in a drawer, there was a knock at her door.
The wolf opened the door and smiled, seeing captain Boehm in front of her.
"Hey Jay, what are you doing?"
"Just putting away some clothes." The wolf said, quickly fixing her hair and making herself look presentable. "What brings you around?"
"Well… I was wondering if you would like to hang out?" The captain said, trying to speak confidentiality. "We could go somewhere. There's plenty of attractions around Zootopia. Or just stay here and watch a movie or something."
JayJay's tail started wagging.
"Oh! I'd love to take you out clubbing!" The wolf said.
"Clubbing? Eh… that's not exactly my thing…."
"Please!" JayJay said, giving Alex puppy dog eyes. "I'd love it if you came along!"
"Sigh, alright, fine."
"Yes! Trust me, you'll have fun! Let me just get my things and get ready to go."
"Ok, I'll go get my wallet. Meet you back here."
Both mammals used the bathroom, got their personal effects, and met back up outside JayJay's room before leaving the typhoon.
"I'm really excited," JayJay confessed. "You, my favorite person in the world, going clubbing and dancing with me, which is my favorite thing to do!"
"I mean, I'm not exactly big on that sort of thing… but I'll bite the bullet if it means spending time with you."
The wolf wagged her tail in excitement. The pair then came upon Kion and Jasiri, who walked down the hallway. Each had an arm around the other.
"What are you two up to?" Alex asked.
"We're just going out," Kion said.
"Oh! So are we!" JayJay responded. "I'm taking him to a club."
The wolf gestured at the human.
"Heh, didn't think that would be your kind of thing, Alex." Kion teased. "You are usually a very reserved person who tends to keep to himself."
"Your correct." The captain responded, "But I just like spending time with Jay."
"Well, I like spending time with Jasiri." The lion kissed the hyena on the cheek, making her blush. This prompted JayJay to turn to her companion. Giving a look that almost saying "What? Where's my kiss?"
"If you two are going out, what if we come with you? We could all hang out." Jasiri said.
"I'm fine with that," Boehm responded. "Jay?"
"I'm down! Let's go!"
The four left the typhoon and headed down the street, led by JayJay, who knew where all the excellent dance parties and nightclubs were.
"I am going to bring you out of your shell tonight." JayJay said to Alex, "you can't be so reserved all the time."
"I think you are the right person to do that." The human responded to the wolf. "You're so outgoing and social. I'm an introvert, your an extrovert."
"Opposites attract." Kion laughed.
After a few minutes of walking, the group reached a building with dozens of bright neon lights outside, shining in all colors.
"Hey! It's the party animal!" Said the bear bouncer, opening the door for the team to go inside.
More bright lights of all colors flashed above a dance floor made up of light-up squares, which also changed color frequently. Mammals packed the dance floor, moving and cheering as they enjoyed themselves.
A bar that glowed white from internal lights was stationed against one of the walls. Behind the bar were shelves of liquid backlit by blue light. Tables and chairs were set up around the main dance floor for mammals to chat and rest.
"Say what about loud noises?" Kion asked Alex. "I heard that introverts like things to be quiet."
"Yes, but Kion, I'm a soldier. I've heard the blasts of artillery strikes and the engines of rockets and jet planes. I can take some loud music."
"Do you guys want to get something to drink first?" Jay asked as the group drifted over to a table. "We need to stay hydrated if we're going to be dancing."
"What time is it?" Alex asked, "ah, I'll just have lemonade or something."
"Coke, please," Kion said. "No ice."
"Water is fine for me," Jasiri said.
"Alright! You guys have to pay me back, though. Kion, could you give me a paw? I can't carry all the drinks."
The wolf and lion left, heading to the bar.
"Say do we have any Glocks onboard the ship?" Jasiri asked.
"Yeah?" The captain said.
"I think I'm gonna try those as my pistols. See how they do in battle."
"Well, if you're going to use them, akimbo, we have plenty of attachments you can use. Sights, flashlights and lasers, muzzle breaks, and suppressors…. Heroes is well supplied."
"I can tell. I suppose all the money spent is worth it, though. We get the job done."
"Maybe you should get yourself another weapon if you find the pistols aren't cutting it. Like an SMG. Maybe an MP5 or UMP."
The human and hyena continued to discuss their weapons of warfare until Kion and JayJay returned with four glasses containing the drinks. The two giving Alex and Jasiri their beverages. JayJay had apparently ordered a beer, as her glass contained a foaming brown liquid.
"Jasiri and I were just talking about our combat gear," Alex said, taking a sip of his lemonade.
"Yeah, he thinks I should get an SMG for when the pistols don't cut it."
"I recently changed my armament as well." Kion said, "I quite like the LMG I got my paws on."
"Well, as I told Jasiri…" Alex said, "we have plenty of attachments you can put on."
"Oh sweet! I'll have to check those out."
"Well, while your running into battle with a sword and a big gun, my own equipment is a bit smaller," JayJay said. "Just a simple pistol and a machine pistol for when the going gets tough."
"Yeah, Kion, you are like the tank. With an LMG, a powerful sword, and your own strength to punch right through enemies." Captain Boehm noted. "Jay is more focused on her agility and speed."
"I've been thinking of getting a sword more like what you and Laval use. Chima style!" Kion said. "Also, JayJay, isn't your pistol an older design? 1911?"
"Yep! And not just any 1911. That very pistol was wielded by my ancestor, Jim Burdel, during WW1!"
"Wow, That should be in a museum."
"Hey, I like to think I'm doing right by my ancestor by carrying his weapon into battle. Though I don't know if he would like the paint scheme I've given it, he's not here to complain."
Suddenly the loud dubstep music slowed down, and all the lights on the dance floor turned a light blue as their movement speed slowed down.
"It's time for a slow dance!" The DJ said, "Maybe grab that special someone and bring them out onto the floor!"
Jasiri smirked at Kion and jumped up, gesturing for Kion to follow her, which he did. They headed out onto the dance floor, joining in the crowd of mammals.
Jasiri playfully pushed Kion, trying to figure out how exactly he should dance with his hyena. Fumbling with his paws and where to put them in a way that was not lewd.
The lion's lover just hugged him close, prompting Kion to wrap his arms around her and slowly turn and dance.
"Come on, Alex!" JayJay said, standing up, prompting the captain to do the same and follow her.
The two mammals reached the dance floor, surrounded by other mammals and couples, moving slowly to the music.
Under the blue light, the pair embraced, nuzzling against each other's fur and skin. Alex and JayJay closed their eyes, enjoying the moment with each other, along with the other couples on the dance floor, including Kion and Jasiri. But the human and wolf were just focusing on each other. Both of them were, to the other, the most important mammal in the world.
Moments like these were what they were fighting for. China was an autocratic nation, curtailing freedoms and liberties. But here, people could be free and enjoy themselves without fear of the government or military.
It was these moments of peace that made their battles worth it. Worth fighting for a million times over.

the time of our lives.
this one was kinda requested/suggested by @cloakanddaggerthings. they’ve also been a great help in hammering out the finicky details. thanks heaps, mate!
OR, the one where it takes a year for these two goofs to realise they’re in love.
-
i. New Year’s Eve.
naturally, this is where they start. although, start in a very loose sense of the word. because they were something before tonight. something fiery and intense, but certainly not something real.
they were midnight rendezvouses, sharp remarks that lacked any real malice, and moments that somehow meant nothing and everything. but what they were is irrelevant. because Poppy’s got a reputation and parental expectations, and AJ doesn’t fit into any of that.
so, they stand in the front yard of some frat house, a New Year’s party raging on inside, and fight. they shout and cuss and say things that don’t at all mean but that make this whole thing easier.
it’s with ten seconds of the year left that Poppy says, “i hate you,” and feels something break in her heart.
“i hate you, too,” AJ says as the countdown finally reaches zero.
there’s cheering from inside and then AJ leaves and now Poppy’s standing alone on the front lawn. she ignores the tears that fall down her cheeks and tries to tell herself that everything will be fine.
so, yes, that’s how they start: in the final ten seconds of the year with an i hate you that actually means something else entirely.
ii. Valentine’s Day.
she sees AJ sporadically throughout the day. and that irritates Poppy like nothing else ever has. figures it would be today of all days that she sees her everywhere.
first it’s at the crack of dawn as she walks home after a one night stand that she spots AJ on a jog. they’re on opposite sides of the street, but it’s empty so they see each other.
AJ stops in her tracks and looks right at Poppy, not exactly irritated but certainly not pleased. Poppy fixes her with a glare that says what are you looking at? AJ shrugs and starts up on her jog again, and Poppy huffs and continues on her walk home.
then they see each other on campus way too many times—in the café, on the quad, and in the library. and each time, Poppy’s glare is met with a shrug from AJ.
the last time she sees AJ it’s late. the sun has long since set and there’s a chill that’s set in for the night. she’s on her way home from dinner—some blind date Veronica had set up—when she spots AJ across the street, laughing and walking hand-in-hand with some girl who looks vaguely familiar.
Poppy watches them until she can’t see them anymore, and wonders if AJ saw her this time, too.
iii. spring break.
she goes to Miami for the week with Veronica and Chloe. her intention is to have a fun and carefree week where she doesn’t once think about AJ.
it’s two days into her trip when she finds herself scrolling through Instagram late one night. curiosity nibbles at her restraint until she’s typing AJ’s name into the search bar.
she finds AJ’s profile and the first picture she sees is some candid shot of AJ and that same girl from Valentine’s Day looking at each other with ridiculously cheesy smiles. Poppy switches her phone off and doesn’t dare touch it for the rest of the night.
Poppy goes to a party the next night and hooks up with a girl who looks a lot like AJ. Veronica and Chloe point this out a few days later, laughing over cocktails. Poppy scoffs and tells them that’s complete bullshit and tries to hide her blush by taking a long sip of her drink.
iv. summer break.
the academic year ends and Poppy sighs with relief as she collapses onto her bed. she’s got three months until her final year starts, and three months where she doesn’t have to see or think of AJ.
it goes well at first—the not thinking about AJ. she spends a lot of time shopping and partying and lounging by the pool of her parents’ beach house on Long Island. but there are only so many hours of the day where she can keep her mind busy. so it’s at night, when she’s in bed trying to fall asleep, that her mind wanders back to AJ.
the first time it happens, she groans and rolls onto her side, and tries to flush all thoughts of AJ from her mind. that works. but then it happens again and again, and before Poppy really knows it, it’s halfway through August and she’s thought of AJ every single night since the end of June.
she lays awake in bed and watches the fan on the ceiling spin in lazy circles. her brain summons a long and near forgotten memory of a night a lot like this. she closes her eyes and sinks into the warm embrace of the memory:
she was in bed with AJ. it was either late or early, Poppy can’t quite remember. she decides it probably doesn’t really matter. they were talking and laughing under the quiet blanket of night. and Poppy suddenly remembers how she’d reached for AJ’s hand and never wanted to let it go.
Poppy opens her eyes and glances to her side. the bed is empty beside her, the sheets untouched, and she can almost feel the ghost of AJ’s touch on her hand. she squeezes her eyes shut, trying not to cry, and realises she never did hate AJ. she was probably just scared.
v. Halloween.
there’s a party on campus—isn’t there always? a frat party with costumes and decorations and cheesy music that starts to sound alright after three or four drinks. Poppy slips in later in the night, when everyone’s teetering on the edge of tipsy and drunk.
she moves through the throng of people towards the kitchen to pour herself a drink, and bumps into AJ for the first time this semester.
“hey,” AJ says, awkward and unsure, and Poppy silently regrets everything she’s put her through.
“hi,” Poppy says, smiling and really meaning it.
that seems to loosen AJ up a bit, and she returns the smile in kind.
“haven’t seen you in a while,” AJ says, leaning back against the counter and sipping her drink.
“been busy,” she lies even though that’s something she’s trying to stop.
and AJ seems to understand the lie for what it is. “you wanna go outside for a bit?”
Poppy only nods, afraid that if she speaks, she’ll ruin whatever’s happening right now. it’s quieter outside, the cheesy music and chatter nothing but a gentle murmur. they stand out on the front lawn of some frat house and Poppy gets a strange sense of déjà vu.
“i wish things had been different, y’know?” AJ says, her voice a gentle reassurance.
“me too,” Poppy says, and then: “i’m sorry that i said i hate you. because i don’t.”
a moment of silence passes, uncomfortable and almost tight like a rubber band pulled to its limit. because it looks like AJ’s about to say something important that’ll put them on a better path. but then the front door of the frat house flies open, and a few drunk students stumble out into the yard.
AJ offers Poppy a smile, almost sad and longing. “it was nice seeing you again.” and then she heads back inside.
vi. Thanksgiving.
Poppy doesn’t plan on visiting her parents this year. and besides, they’re going out of town for the holiday. so if she has to be alone, she’d rather it be in the sorority house than in some stuffy brownstone on the Upper West Side.
it’s late in the afternoon when Poppy gets a text from AJ. all it says is are you at the sorority? she stares at it for a moment, debates deleting it and carrying on with her day. but something tells her to respond, so she does.
she says that she is and waits for AJ’s response. she waits five minutes, then ten and nothing comes. Poppy scoffs and tosses her phone onto her bed. it’s not long later when she hears a knock on the front door. Poppy doesn’t think much of it, so she answers it without checking.
she finds AJ standing on the front stoop, grinning like she knows something Poppy doesn’t.
“what are you doing here?” Poppy says. “i thought you’d be on your way home by now.”
“i’m getting an early flight tomorrow.” then AJ holds up a plane ticket, grinning like this has been her plan all along. “and i was wondering if you’d want to come with me.”
“what?”
“come home with me. my parents always cook too much food, so really, you’d be doing them a favour.”
Poppy folds her arms over her chest and studies AJ for a moment. “don’t you want to take your girlfriend,” she says, and maybe she wants her words to hurt a little bit.
“we broke up over the summer,” AJ says, simple and easy.
“oh. sorry.”
“don’t be. it wasn’t working out and hadn’t been for a while.”
“are you trying to use pity to get me to come with you?” Poppy says, and she knows AJ wouldn’t, but it’s kinda fun to mess with her.
“no, of course not! i just wanted to be upfront with you. so, come home with me. please.”
Poppy plucks the ticket from AJ’s hand and says, “i’m only doing this for your parents.”
“of course.” AJ winks and grins. “i’ll see you bright and early at the airport tomorrow then.
the flight is uneventful, although Poppy decides AJ is much too cheerful for seven o’clock in the morning.
when they step inside AJ’s childhood home, Poppy’s immediately struck by just how warm and lived in it all feels. AJ’s mother tells her to mind the mess as she ushers them both inside, and AJ’s father greets them and says hugs’ll have to wait as he gestures to his dirty apron.
they all cram around a too small table in mismatched chairs that creak and rock back-and-forth. Poppy doesn’t care that she’s sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with AJ and one of her sisters. dinner is loud and fun, and AJ’s parents insist on sharing stories from AJ’s childhood. and as dinner winds down and dessert is served, Poppy reaches for AJ’s hand beneath the table and knows that she’ll never let go.
vii. Christmas.
it’s close to midnight on Christmas Eve when AJ appears on the front stoop of the Zeta house. she looks distraught and like she hasn’t had a good night sleep in days. so Poppy steps outside and asks, “what’s wrong?”
AJ looks at her, really looks at her, and Poppy feels something shift in that moment. and then AJ’s talking, words tumbling from her mouth, and it doesn’t look like she can stop herself. then she says i love you and everything goes still.
it takes a moment, but AJ seems to catch up to what she’s just said. her eyes go wide, and Poppy can see that she’s gearing up to apologies. but Poppy doesn’t let her. she surges forward and hug AJ tightly because oh god, i’ve missed her so much.
Poppy doesn’t say the words back, not yet anyway. but she holds onto AJ and tries to show her that she loves her, too.
viii. New Year’s Eve.
naturally, this is where they end. although end in a very loose sense of the word. because they will be something after tonight. something supportive and challenging, but most importantly something real.
they will be promises of forever, witty remarks that are just an i love you in disguise, and moments where the rest of the word falls away and it’s just the two of them together. what they will be terrifies Poppy. because she’s got a reputation and parental expectations, and AJ doesn’t fit into any of that... right?
maybe. but maybe it’s good that AJ doesn’t fit into that. maybe it’s good that AJ had upended everything she thought she knew. maybe that’s what makes what they will be so damn perfect.
so, they stand in the front yard of some frat house, a New Year’s party raging on inside, and finally admit what’s been there all along. they talk and tease and say things they mean with all their heart.
it’s with ten seconds of the year left that Poppy says, “i love you,” and feels that final piece of her heart heal.
“i love you, too,” AJ says as the countdown finally reaches zero.
there’s cheering from inside and then AJ steps closer to Poppy, smiling so bright and warm, and Poppy twists her arms around AJ’s neck and doesn’t once care that she’s probably smiling like an idiot in love.
so, yes, that’s how they end: in the final ten second of the year with an i love you that means exactly what it claims.

@wrightfamilyweek Day 2 - Investigation/Hijinks
In which an anniversary is coming up, so Trucy makes some plans.
You can also find this on AO3 right here :)
“Have fun at work, Daddy!”
Trucy runs up to Daddy and hugs him around the stomach. He kisses the top of his head.
“Mmhm, I expect your homework to be done and you to be in bed by the time I get home, alright? No exceptions!"
“Of course!”
“And no trips to Germany, alright? I’m sure you can hold off for another few months.” Daddy teases. Trucy sticks his tongue out at him and he ruffles her hair before going out the door. In a few months, she is going to actually get to go with Daddy on one of his trips to see Miles, a reconnection between the two of them since Trucy's own little trip a year ago.
As the door closes, Trucy runs over to the window and waits until she sees Daddy riding down the street on his bike, officially out of the building. Her homework is already done, most of it finished during class time and the rest of it finished up during recess and on her way home from school. Walking while writing had made her numbers come out a little odd, but it didn’t matter, because now she had hours and hours of time to work.
She stops by the fridge, staring up at the calendar. It’s four weeks away from the date circled in red, and two weeks from the date that sits ominously empty. It’s plenty of time, though.
Trucy makes a lap around the office, double-checking that the windows are locked just like Daddy does every time before leaving. Everything seems safe and sound, so she grabs her backpack and leaves, making sure she has the spare key and locking the door behind her. Daddy won’t be home until late, but she’s still going to make care to be home with plenty of time to spare. The meer idea of putting him through the same fear of last year sits in her chest like a promise.
It’s a few bus-stops to get to Gummy and Maggey’s house. They’re both out at the moment, so Trucy finds the spare key in the fake rock and lets herself in. She’s spent a lot of time over here by now, and the couple has spent alot of time over at the office, the big and towering man she’d met at the airport transforming into a familiar and lovable family friend.
She skips over to the closet, pulling out the supplies stuck in there. Streamers and confetti, magic wands and fake flowers, tumbling out from where Gummy had helped her shove them in last time. She looks down at the supplies and begins organizing it into the different acts that they’re associated with. There’s a lot of pieces, a lot to get over to the Wonder Bar eventually. Keeping so much of it over here makes it harder to practice back at home, but that’s kind of the point, even if it’s really annoying.
Gummy and Maggie came home after an hour, setting their things down and chatting about their day while Gummy starts dinner. The smell fills the house, warm and comforting. Trucy likes the Gumshoe house. It’s not too big, but not too small either. Gummy and Maggey used to clean it up before she came over, but they’ve stopped making that special little change for her, and so she gets to see it all lived in, a sock strewn here, a few dishes left out, pillows lying wherever they were last placed. Small things that make the place not a house but a home. She’s never had a home like this one, and oh there are sometimes where she’ll be lying on the couch and imagine what it would be like to stay here.
She knows she could.
Daddy has made it clear that if she ever felt dissatisfied with the cramped office, with him, all she has to do was say something. Gummy and Maggey have mentioned, before, that they’d be willing to take her in if anything ever happened to Daddy. Gummy had laughed about all the sorts of injuries Daddy tended to accrue, recounting a story about Daddy getting amnesia before a case - Trucy knew that one, she’d read it a bit ago.
Trucy doesn’t want to leave the cramped little office.
After dinner, Trucy uses Gummy’s phone. Gummy and Maggey know how to set up her stuff for a performance by now - they’ve already agreed to be her stage crew for the performance. While they’re doing that, Trucy calls up Aunty Maya.
“How’s my favorite magician doing?” Maya answers, and Trucy can hear the smile in her voice.
“Working on her next trick.” Trucy replies. Maya makes a humming sound.
“Well, things are going well on our end over here. Are you sure about the color? You don’t want to go darker?” Maya asked.
“Nope! It’s, well, there’s a reason for the shade.” Trucy says. She can hear Maya hum in understanding over the receiver.
“Well, I’m almost finished with it, although I’ll probably come up soon just to make sure everything is right. Pearly says hi, by the way.”
“Oh! Is she there?! Is she there?! Hi Pearls!” Trucy shouts over the phone and gets a distant and soft ‘hi Trucy!’.
“When I come down I’ll bring Pearly with me, don’t worry. If I didn’t,she might just run the whole way over there anyway!” Maya laughs and Trucy laughs along.
“If everything’s working out, then I’m gonna have to go. I need to make sure the rest of the show is ready to go!” Trucy says.
“Alright, alright, just say you’re afraid I’m going to start prattling on about the new season of Rubber Samurai. But you know there-”
“Love you Aunty Maya bye!” Trucy hits the end call button still chuckling to herself. She hopes that Aunty Maya makes true on her promise to come back down and to bring Pearls before the big day, but if she doesn’t then Trucy guesses she can wait that long, even if it’ll be agonizing.
She stares at the next number for a long long while before finally hitting the call button.
The phone rings once, twice, three times before he picks up.
“Gumshoe, this had better be fucking import-”
“Hi, Miles!” Trucy chirps. There’s silence on the other end.
“... who is this?” Miles grumbles.
“Trucy Wright!”
“Trucy?!” Miles sounds a little more awake now.
“Yup!”
“Ms. Trucy… why are you calling me at… three in the morning?” Miles groans.
“Th… three in the… OH!” Trucy gasps, feeling her face flush in embarrassment. She’d completely forgotten to take into account time differences. “Oh my god, Miles, I’m so sorry, it’s pretty late here and-”
“It’s, it’s fine Ms. Trucy. Just tell me what you were calling about… from Gumshoe’s phone? Is your father alright?” Worry creeps into Miles voice.
“Oh, yes, Daddy’s fine! Daddy’s just at work right now, and I went over to Gummy and Maggey’s! We had spaghetti and meatballs for dinner, and then we’re gonna play a card game, and then Gummy is gonna drive me back to the office ‘cause it’s all dark now!” Trucy says.
“Ms. Trucy, I don’t mean to sound rude, but again, it is three a.m. here…” Miles sighs.
“Right! Right, um… Mr. Edgeworth, do you think you could help me with a little something.”
“I’m going to need a bit more information than that.”
Trucy rattles off her little plan into the phone. Miles stays silent for the entire explanation, only grunting here and there to assure her that he is still awake and listening on the other end.
“... this is very short notice.” Miles says.
“Oh,” Says Trucy, looking down at her feet, “Well, that’s okay, I’m sure together, the rest of us-”
“I never said I wouldn’t do it, just that next time you’re planning something like This, please, tell me about it a little more ahead of time.”
“Okay! Yeah! Next time! And this time… you can do it?” She double checks.
“Yes, you can count on me, Ms. Trucy.”
“Thank you! Um, I’ll let you get back to sleep, thank you!”
Trucy skips back into the kitchen, where Gummy and Maggey have set up a board game. She still has her show to practice a bit more, and even now thinking about it she’s a little nervous, but she’s found she’s more excited. It’s coming together.
oOo
“Please, Daddy, please, come and see my show tonight? Pleaseeeee?”
Phoenix lets out a long sigh. Trucy is bouncing around in excitement in front of him. She’s already done her stage makeup, and he’d helped her put little weaving braids into her hair. Most of it will be covered up by her hat, but there are usually moments during the performance where the hat comes off, and so she needs to look amazing no matter what’s going on. Phoenix is fine to help her with this, but on today of all days, all he wants to do is sit in his office, read through old case files, and mourn what he has lost.
He was disbarred two years ago. That both feels like too much and not enough time. For the most part, he likes to think that he’s been coping with it well. He’s been working, and raising Trucy, and he’s had some other little things in the works, but on today of all days, it’s so hard to focus and not feel the ache of what was taken from him, of what he’s lost, of those who have come to his door in the past couple years looking for help and having to be turned away.
“Trucy, baby,” Phoenix starts, trying to let her down easy, but Trucy stomps her foot.
“No, Daddy, please, just, just come? To the show? Please?” She begs.
She’s been 'off' all week, too quiet and then too talkative in bursts that serve to confuse Phoenix. Now, there’s something almost akin to fear in her eyes, and it tugs at Phoenix’s heartstrings.
“Alright, sweetie, let me just,” He looks down at himself, still in sweatpants and a hoodie. He’d meant to get dressed today, but even now he’s struggling to find the energy to get into something better, and eventually he just says lamely, “Put some shoes on.”
He gets a pair of beat-up sneakers on and walks outside with Trucy, who is still vibrating with energy. He considers for a moment that perhaps he should buy a new pair of shoes, but then he sees Trucy’s cape, starting to look thread-bare in places and sitting so much shorter on her than it did two years ago. It used to fall to cover her almost completely in a mysterious sort of way, but now you can see her entire hands. Trucy has told him before it’d be fine, her cape had been too long anyway, but maybe he should start to consider how to get her something new and nice. Things for himself could be put off as long as they needed to be.
The ride down to the Wonder Bar is quiet between them, Trucy sitting on his handlebars with careful balance. The first five times they did it, Phoenix had been worried about her falling off or something, but now it was routine if they had anywhere they both had to be and didn’t have the time to puzzle through bus schedules or the budget for a taxi.
Phoenix recognizes some of the people in the Wonder Bar, and Mr. Wunderbar himself comes over and greets.
“Ah, Ms. Wright, so glad to see you! Your assistants are already backstage.” Mr. Wunderbar says. Phoenix’s brow furrows.
“Assistants? You mean the your staff?” Phoenix asks.
“Alright thanks Mr. Wunderbar Daddy find a seat love you bye!” Trucy says in one breath and runs over to the stage.
“This way, Mr. Wright. Trucy asked that we have a table upfront reserved just for you.” Mr. Wunderbar leads the way to one of the tables close to the stage, which does indeed have a a ‘Reserved’ marker on it. Phoenix feels suddenly self conscious in his outfit. He’d been planning to sit in the back, where nobody could see him, and he feels like everybody in the bar, waiting for Trucy to perform, are staring at him.
Mr. Wunderbar took his order and then slipped away. Phoenix drumms his fingers on the table, a cowardice sweeping through him with such force that he almost gets up and walks away. Something odd is going on, and it's making him even more nervous.
“Oh good, Trucy was really worried you wouldn’t show up.”
Phoenix jumps at the familiar voice, and spins around to see Maya and Pearls.
“Wh- hey, what are you two doing here?!” Phoenix jumps up and hugs both of them, “And especially what’s Pearls doing in here?”
“Mr. Wunderbar says that so long as nobody at our table orders drinks, he’ll allow it this once.” Maya says, sitting down, and Pearls sits on the other side of Phoenix, sandwiching him between the Fey’s.
“But why are you two-”
“Now Nick, do you really think we’d let you spend today on your own to mope?” Maya sets her hands on her hips. Phoenix looks away. He doesn’t point out that they didn’t last year, because it’s not their responsibility to look after him. Maya has her own life she’s living. She had texted and called him, though, regularly, throughout the day, at random intervals. She threatened that if he didn’t pick up any of the times, she’d be coming over right way, “I’ll admit, though, clearly we came mostly to see Trucy perform. Right Pearls?”
“Yeah! She’s so amazing, Mr. Nick! And we also had to bring the-” Pearls starts to say, but Maya puts a finger to her lips and shushes Pearls, who’s mouth slams shut.
“... alright, enough of this, what’s going on?” Phoenix asks more plainly.
“So she still hasn’t seen fit to tell you yet?”
And then, slipping into the fourth seat at the table, is Miles. Miles, in California, in the flesh, in the Wonderbar.
“M-Miles! What are you doing here?”
“Your daughter had a simple request, and I obliged.” Miles sniffs, “You look,” Miles regards Phoenix and Phoenix looks away, wishing he’d brought something to cover his head as well, “Alright, all things considered.” He ends.
“No need to sugar coat it, Miles.” Phoenix laughs bitterly.
“I’m not. You seem to forget you’re not the only one who has gone through some trying times.”
Before Phoenix can formulate anything to say to that, the lights in the bar dim. The curtain lifts, but there’s a sheet behind it, so that all once can see of Trucy is her silhouette.
“Now introducing… Trucy Gramraye!” The announcer booms, and there’s some applause, even though nothing’s happened yet, Trucy still not seen.
“There are times that we, in life, come to a crossroads,” Trucy’s voice booms through the speakers over a mystical sounding soundtrack, “ Where we our lives take sudden changes.”
Oh, Phoenix thinks, heart plummeting to the bottom of his stomach, a theory forming in his mind, She wanted me here for her Last Show. Did something happen that made her want to stop being a magician? He’s tried to be supportive, even though he’s had some trouble keeping track of the supplies she needs, and how to help her out, with her teaching him far more than he can possibly teach her about this stuff. He’s offered to get in touch with Max Galactica, but Trucy had made it plain her opinion of that magician.
“Sometimes, you need to say things. And sometimes actions - and appreances - speak louder than words.”
Phoenix almost wants to stand up, to shout at her that no, he doesn’t want her to give up her magic just because she thinks it’s going to make him happy, but he’s frozen in his seat as the sheet of paper hiding his daughter from view is torn through and fog comes rolling out… but she’s not there.
In a puff of smoke, Trucy appears on top of his table. She winks down at him, the spot light finding her.
Her red hat and cape and bag are all gone, replaced by pale blue versions. New, lovingly crafted, and Trucy puts her hands above her head in a pose.
“I am Trucy Gramarye, but your little witch in red is now a magician in blue. Sorry if I startled anybody by coming… out of the blue like that?” Trucy says. She smiles, twirls around, and in another puff of smoke she’s gone. The room goes dark.
The spotlight finds her back on the stage, still in the strange blue uniform.
“Wh-what- when did she-”
“You know, in Kurain, we have to make all our own clothes.” Maya says with a mischievous little smirk.
“You mean you-”
“She wanted to put together something to make sure you weren’t too sad today.” Maya explains, smiling.
Phoenix does his best not to cry so that he doesn’t miss any bit of the show.
When it’s done, Mr. Wunderbar brings over another chair and Trucy sits with them. Phoenix spends the evening surrounded by his friends, by his family, and staring at Trucy’s new outfit. Blue, just like his old suit, he thinks.
“Do you like it?” She asks, surprisingly shyly, right before bed. Phoenix grins, picks her up, and twirls her around.
“You look amazing sweetie. You know, you didn’t have to go through all that just for me.”
“I didn’t do it just for you.” Trucy defends, “I did it because I wanted to! And because I love you!”
“I love you too Truce.”
Tomorrow morning, reality will set in again. He’ll have work, and maybe all the grief he was able to put off today will make a forceful comeback, but tonight he knows he’s loved, and that Trucy wants to be a part of his world, wants to be a part of his broken little family, and maybe that’s all that really matters in the end.
