#like the dinosaurs being extinct makes sense right

Honestly. nothing gets to me more than the perpetual "we"-ing of the terrible effects of "humanity" on the planet
Like talk abt species going extinct due to climate change or poaching or similar "We're killing the planet" Who's We?
I didn't pick up a rifle, I didn't dump my fishing net, I don't own a single factory.
Humans are PART of the planet, part of nature, WE are not some sort of scourge or the one thing that is removed from everything else.
And it's like. All intentional too, like some PR exec for BP or similar has made these decisions. The blame for climate change has been divided 8 billion ways and split equally onto all of us when our contributions are Certainly not equal.
It's part of the capitalism machine, to make people believe capitalism and humanity are inextricably tied to one another. "Humanity is a disease" as a phrase highlights this pretty well, shifting the issue from sets of behaviours to just inherent properties of People.
Cause as long as we believe humanity's existence is just inherently problematic for the planet, we won't go dismantling any systems that the people in charge of polluting the entire planet happen to rely upon for their fortunes.
Humanity is fucking great. All of my probably top 50 favourite things in the world are people. We are part of this planet and I'm a big fan of both us and the planet we're on.
blegh idk, it's important to deconstruct how commonly people think capitalism is just part of the human experience because it's not, and there's a lot of propaganda to make you think it is, and a lot of corporations relying on the fact that you believe it

Suskityrannus vs Maip
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Factfiles:
Suskityrannus hazelae
Tumblr media
Artwork by Andrey Atuchin, written by @zygodactylus
Name Meaning: Hazel Wolfe’s Coyote Tyrant
Time: 92 million years ago (Turonian stage of the Late Cretaceous)
Location: Moreno Hill Formation, Zuni Basin, New Mexico
When you follow the progress of paleontology long enough, you start to see things that were previously left undescribed actually get names and the respect they deserve - whether its the “putative screamer” Anachronornis or the “Zuni Coelurosaur” Suskityrannus, you’re sure to get a nice moment and a sense of satisfaction from it. Suskityrannus has been well known for a while due to it being featured in both When Dinosaurs Roamed America as well as Planet Dinosaur. Thought at various times to be a basal Coelurosaur or Tyrannosauroid, its official description placed it somewhat derived within Tyrannosaurs, showcasing the evolution of the Tyrannosaur group as it transitioned from the smaller more speedy forms (like Suskityrannus) to the giant murder birds we know and love later in the Cretaceous. In fact, Suskityrannus lived in an ecosystem that highlighted its changing world, with many early representatives of the later iconic North American Cretaceous ecosystems showing up in early forms in Moreno Hill. Suskityrannus was about one meter tall and three meters long, and already had many adaptations known from later tyrannosaurs. In the forested coastal ecosystem at Moreno Hill, Suskityrannus would have been neighbors with Zuniceratops, Nothronychus, Jeyawati, ankylosaurs, fish, and turtles.
Maip macrothorax

Artwork by @i-draws-dinosaurs, written by @zygodactylus
Name Meaning: Long-chested Shadow of Death
Time: 72 to 66 million years ago (Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous)
Location: Chorrillo Formation, Patagonia, Argentina
Megaraptors, a group not even really understood a few decades ago, just keep having more and more interesting members added to this group - Maip, a recent addition known from many bones of the trunk and tail, help fill out more of this picture with remains not known from other Megaraptors, and als having the most complete Megaraptor skeleton known. Maip was also interesting in having a very long, thick torso, leading to its specific name. It probably reached 9 to 10 meters in length in life, making it the largest Megaraptor known (literally reaching carcharodontosaurid size), and it may indicate that megaraptors rose to high-level predator status as other top predators went extinct in the region. It had a respiratory system similar to modern birds, with unidirectional air flow, much like other Saurischian dinosaurs. Living in southernmost South America, Maip would have had to deal with a variety of harsh climates, and may have been covered in feathers in order to keep warm. In addition to mosasaurs, snakes, turtles, mammals, fish, and frogs, Maip lived with other dinosaurs such as Nullotitan, Kookne, Yatenavis, and Isasicursor.

The pop-culture urge to resurrect dinosaurs.
First of all, let me clear this, DINOSAURS ARENT EXTINCT. They are right there, maybe pooping around in your lawn or the non-veg meal you recently had. You just aren't aware of it. My previous blog was all about this and you can go check that out :)
So, if dinosaurs aren't extinct, then what's the point of bringing them back to life? More so... why make movies, write stories, draw comics and blah blah blah to actually resurrect them?! And this is what this blog is all about.
Tumblr media
Birds, which are dinosaurs don't look like the dinosaurs you actually imagine it to be. Just wonder, what's the first thing that popped up in your mind, when you read the word 'dinosaur' in the very title itself. A giant beast, ferocious eyes, long necks maybe (those sauropods) and so on. No one did think about the chickens we eat, pigeons we shoo away or those beautiful kingfishers and parrots we admire. If you did, then... I think you are already smarter than me.
This is nothing, but the result of a constant impression about dinosaurs that pop-culture has fed to you, that your mind can't imagine anything else. More apt, you just can't think other than the Jurassic Park franchise if you are a 21st century kid like me!
Now hold on, this doesn't mean I am a Jurassic Park hater or this blog got grudges against it. I love that universe as much as you but the thing is, fact is fact. And, science in the end shouldn't be to please people, but to make people aware of the things they aren't aware of.
So... with a bit of reading and literature research, I actually dug into this matter deep enough to find a reason; that actually answers my question - Why pop-culture wants to resurrect dinosaurs?
Richard Owen coined the term dinosaur in the year 1841. Note, the Theory of Evolution and The Origin of Species was published by Darwin in the year of 1859, meaning the world dug out dinosaurs technically unaware of evolution and natural selection (pretty funny to me).
This makes sense as to why it got related to reptiles in the first place. Until 1860s there was pretty much no consensus to the fact that birds are related to dinosaurs. When Archeopteryx was initially discovered somewhen around 1860 it pretty much changed the course of Dinosaur paleobiology. Trust me, society didn't believe this in the first place. It took decades for the Dinosaur Renaissance to actually begin and thanks to Robert Baker's famous book Dinosaur Heresis in the 1970s, that gave dinosaurs the justice it had long due. So its pretty much okay to say that birds are dinosaurs came into the scientific consensus much much later than it was actually discovered (unfortunately this happens with most of the discoveries in Earth Sciences as a whole). Also, I would point to the discovery of more and more feathers in fossil specimens as the point where the relation between birds and dinosaurs were eventually confirmed.
Now dinosaurs came into the pop-culture scene in the 1850s with Charles Dicken's Bleak House. Yeah, a decade before Archeopteryx was dug out and Origin of Species was published. Movies first depicted dinosaurs as pretty lovable creatures. Classic example being the animated, Gertie - The Dinosaur (by Winsor McCay) which released as a silent film in 1914.
Soon after, it didn't take long for the lovable dinosaurs to turn into horrifying beasts. DW Griffith in his 1914's Brute Force silent film depicted Dinosaurs as ferocious monsters who haunted cavemen. Also establishing the early fiction, that early humans and dinosaurs coexisted together. This, a devastating scientific hoax (sugar coated as fiction), remained for quiet some time. You might have seen the famous cartoon series - The Flintstones, yup! if you were a fan of it like me, then you relate to what I am saying.
Steven Spielberg made Jurassic Park much later. Already a lot had been done about dinosaurs in the television and big screens. He legit hired paleontologists as scientific advisors for his films, which is why many things were even scientifically correct in the Jurassic Park film series, but at the end he was a film director to appease people and deliver box-office hits. He already knew what people wanted from dinosaurs. Hardly few will remember that the film actually says that birds came from dinosaurs in the very beginning. Instead, what you remember is just them chasing humans and destroying things. Unfortunate, but that's the reality.
Even today, its hard to imagine any film, story or comic that portrays dinosaurs as birds. They are the modern day dinosaurs! You have it all around. But you aren't satisfied with it and so you need movies that bring the typical dinosaur to life with the help of special effects to satisfy your soul. So yeah, if we as common people accept the fact that birds are dinosaurs then may be resurrection of dinosaurs will reduce to a lot extent in your screens and scientifically accurate stuffs will be fed to you :)
So, this is it for this blog. To be honest, while writing this I realized that I started loving these creatures because of pop-culture only :) no matter how scientifically inaccurate it was. I mean, this does become an irony. At one side of the spectrum it is to be blamed, but on the other it did make these creatures popular isn't it? Maybe I should cover this in my next blog hehe, so stay tuned!
For the love of Earth Science :D Byeee
Oh yes!!! Do check out my previous blog
thank you.

good morning, friends! im exhausted and only got like four hours of sleep, but at least im (kind of) mentally prepared to revisit the episode, so (you probably know the drill by now), here’s all my commentary and thoughts and stuff from the episode!
i feel like its important for everyone to know that i made myself an ice tea at 11:30pm because i knew i wouldnt be able to survive the episode alone
(and dont suggest that the ice tea is the cause of the lack of sleep, if anything it’s the only reason i got to sleep)
i was very nervous in the beginning cos i was pretty sure photjanee wouldnt be homophobic but also what if she is
props to her for not asking tinn cos he was visibly nervous/afraid
and gun told gim and she didnt even say anything at first. she just looked so freaking proud, then hugged him and said “whoever you love, i love” and i love her so much she’s a freaking perfect mother
PHOTJANEE’S NEURODIVERGENT AND AWESOME HUSBAND who is still nameless IS SITTING NEXT TO HER SO HE’S GONNA SAY SOME HELPFUL AND SUPPORTIVE WORDS
“were you afraid to hear the answer” im sensing a recurring themeeee (if youve forgotten and somehow havent rewatched the show over and over again, in episode 6 gun kept saying he was afraid to hear the answer of who tinn liked)
“i think if he’s ready, he’ll tell you himself. give it time. time for tinn and yourself.” I LOVE THIS MAN
Tumblr media
also side note: she’s really pretty
i smell a sponsorship
a canon printer sponsorship
theyre so subtle with their sponsorships
“by the way, this printer is so convenient, it can be used with any operating system, right?” NICE ONE GEM, REAL SUBTLE, NO ONE WILL KNOW
Tumblr media
TIWPOR TINNGUN DOUBLE DATE STUDY DATE ONCE AGAIN
Tumblr media
AND SOUNDWIN BEHIND THEM (and also yo and pat i guess)
tinngun are always reminiscent of patpran, but so much throughout this episode it literally felt like i was watching bad buddy
GUN FINALLY KNOWS THAT TIW KNOWS AND GUN IS LIKE ‘wait did you tell him’ AND TIW JUST GOES
“do you think this nerd would succeed in getting your love without my help”
AND HE’S SO ICONIC AND HE’S SO RIGHT AND I LOVE HIM SO MUCH OH MY GOSH
also rip four and tinn’s homosecuality, they have to pretend to date for this music video
also also WE GET TO SEE FOUR AND HER GIRLFRIEND AGAIN OMG I LOVE THEM
THEY MAKE ME SO HAPPY
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THEM AND THEIR IN-LOVE-NESS
cant wait for the homophobia this episode /sarc
“we just have to wait until the dinosaurs are extinct and humans rule the world” TIW LITERALLY JUST SAID WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR ALL THE BOOMERS TO DIE OUT AND THEN GAYS CAN RULE THE WORLD THIS IS FREAKING HILARIOUS
Tumblr media
I CANT EXPLAIN IT, THEIR FACES ARE SO REMINISCENT OF PATPRAN AND MORE SO THAN USUAL
Tumblr media
does- does this count as a first kiss
that was so sudden
um
help???
theyre so cute tho i love them
PROM DAY (looking back, how does so much happen in this one day)
✨gotta love being outed✨
GUN JUST TOLD THE BROSKIS
and por is, naturally, very excited
but also somehow very oblivious
i had a feeling yo knew already
apparently sound told win ages ago (when? idk man)
pat having a suspicion about it is actually very surprising
“you and you, what’s going on? you’ve been weird”
FINALLY THE SCENE OF THEM HOLDING HANDS AND SHOWING THE GUYS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR WAY TOO FREAKING LONG
Tumblr media
AND THEY BOTH LOOK SO FREAKING HAPPY
IM DYING
i need to ingrain every soundwin scene from this episode into my brain cos there’s so much of it and i want to see it all forever please
tis raining and theyre under an umbrella and soundwin did it first
okay so. it sucks that they were outed. and people shouldnt take photos of other people and then post it on social media because they can, cos thats an invasion of privacy and is not cool.
on the other hand, everyone seems thrilled by it and tinngun aren’t hurt by it happening so i guess its okay
in general tho people should not do this cos it could go very badly
but this is a bl drama not real life so its fine
I SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE A NEUROSPICY GUY
they did the happy arms
and theyre sitting cross-legged on top of a table
Tumblr media
i love you random side character
PAT AND POR BEING ALL HAPPY AND EXCITED IS HILARIOUS I LOVE THEM
“no one cares about people’s sexual orientation these days. its a new world. right, pumpkin??” GUI4HERIH4IIGU (note to past me: it gets worse. you’re gonna progressively die even more)
EW PEOPLE ARE MESSAGING PHOTJANEE SAYING TINN’S GONNA RUIN THE SCHOOL’S REPUTATION AND STUFF
Tumblr media
...what series was it
did- did you watch bad buddy, photjanee
did tinn’s parents watch bad buddy
ive decided they watched bad buddy until proven otherwise
‘its down to us whether we’re as kind to our son as those in the series’ THIS MAN HAS THE WISEST KINDEST WORDS AND I WANT TO GIVE HIM A BIG HUG
tiw and tinn are actually really sad about kajorn leaving the student council which is slightly confusing (not cos i hate him, im finding it increasingly difficult to hate him, i just didn’t think tiw and tinn actually liked kajorn)
‘people are arguing whether it’s guntinn or tinngun’
...
im gonna say it
i have to say it
you cant stop me from saying it
soundwin did it first
(technically it was satangwinny vs winnysatang but thats not the point)
there i said it
hah
Tumblr media
babes she’s known for months
(but yes absolutely if you’re comfortable telling her and you think you should, go right ahead :] )
i hate this teacher
i would like to punch him please
luckily i know, thanks to the preview last episode, that he does, in fact, get punched, so it’s all good
KAJORN IS IN THE ROOM WHILE GUN IS DISTRESSED
I REPEAT, JORN IS THERE
yay tinn is there with gun while he cries
thank you tinn for existing
NO
GO AWAY TEACHER
DON’T ENTER THE ROOM
"im sorry, i was just joking around with my friend, i didnt mean to insult you" yeah, okay, well thats only part of the problem. other problems are: a. the fact that you had to say such a horrible thing in order to joke around with your friend. if that's the kind of humour your friend has, that person should not be your friend, unless it's also your humour, in whcih case, that isnt a sincere apology. b. it's not just that you insulted gun. you also insulted an entire community of people, of students, of human beings, who just want to exist and live as people doing what they want to do. you cant say something homophobic and then only apologise because it hurt one person close to you. you say something homophobic, and then you apologise - in a way that you GENUINELY MEAN - and say you had no intention of hurting so many people, including gun. or, alternatively, dont say the homophobic thing in the first place. c) you’re a freaking TEACHER. a TEACHER is there to SUPPORT and CARE for ALL of their students. a TEACHER should not be saying terrible things where ANYONE could overhear. if a TEACHER cannot be supportive for ALL STUDENTS, then they should not be a teacher. (im a huge defender of teachers cos theyre human beings with lives and families and hobbies and theyre more than just the adult human that tells you 2 plus 2 is 4. but i am also a huge defender of students cos theyre human beings and also children and theyre still developing. and i am especially a defender of students and an offender of teachers when the teacher clearly hates children or isnt a good teacher or should not at all be a teacher. so this isnt me hating all teachers, i love teachers, i could talk about how unappreciated they are for hours. but i cannot stand it when a teacher behaves the way this teacher did. i hate it so freaking much.)
THE TEACHER WAS “SHOCKED” COS GUN IS A “ROCKSTAR” SO THE TEACHER “THOUGHT YOU WERE MANLY”
THATS NOT AN EXPLANATION NOR IS THAT AN APOLOGY
GENDER AND SEXUAL IDENTITY ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FREAKING THINGS
AND EVEN THEN, GENDER AND GENDER EXPRESSION ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FREAKING THINGS
LIKING MEN DOESNT MAKE SOMEONE ANY LESS ‘MANLY’ SO STFU AND GET FIRED ALREADY
FREAKING YES
GOOD
HELL YES
KAJORN PUNCHED THE TEACHER BEFORE TINN COULD
THIS IS EVERYTHING I COULDVE ASKED FOR OR NEEDED
I LOVE IT SO MUCH
I LOVE KAJORN SO MUCH
IM FINALLY ALLOWED TO NOT HATE HIM AND IM VERY GLAD ABOUT IT
Tumblr media
DAMN SOUND
I MEAN I AGREE BUT WOW I WASNT EXPECTING THAT
‘i HoPe YoU giVe A fAiR jUdGeMeNt oN tHiS cAsE’ bro its not court
and absolutely she’ll give fair judgement
shes freaking awesome and i love her
also what does probation mean
“don’t use violence to solve problems. do you understand?” okay, yes, im 100% on board with you, i completely agree, but, hear me out here: homophobia.
I LOVE PHOTJANEE SO MUCH
COLD AS ICE SHE GOES “if you’re not satisfied with my judgement, write a complaint. but dont forget to add every detail truthfully”
SHE’S SO ICONIC
TRULY A SLAY
“LET GO OF MY SON. as principal, all i can do is submit a report regarding your behavior to those in authority. but as a mom, MY SON CAN LIKE WHOEVER HE LIKES. STAY OUT OF IT. if i hear anything filthy from you again, your penalty will go far beyond this” I FELT HER ANGER
I LOVE HER WITH ALL MY SOUL
SHES FREAKING AWESOME
Tumblr media
and kajorn looks so happy and content
i love him

as much as i love poking fun at pat being lonely, i want him to be happy, and tiwporpat makes sense
(i must also say that patjorn also makes sense and i wouldnt have been mad if they went down the tiwporpat route or the patjorn route. theyre both amazing. but no, they went with pat is lonely forever and its really freaking sad. thanks guys.)

Hello again, the 'Ryder's Parents' theory anon back again (need to come back w a better name fr) and that whole thing w 'why do the dogs talk?' got me thinking of my own theory. Now i gotta preface this by saying i'm only just getting into the show like, seriously? I watched some episodes w my baby brother and got hooked, haven't really watched the movie yet but i know abt the 'one of kitties start talking thanks to the comet' thing, so that's what i'm mostly basing this theory off of
So like... the thing giving superpowers and the ability to talk is a meteor, right? Right. My crazy theory here is that its not the first time a meteor like that hit the earth. A similar one hit the planet during the dinosaur extinction thing (to my knowledge it wasn't a single huge one, there were a few more) and ended up affecting the area around it, giving the life forms around it (in this case, the precursors of dogs) the ability to be able to speak. So!! Humans don't care bc from their perspective, dogs have been able to talk since always. Humans and dog probably have an even closer relationship in the paw patrol universe compared to our reality, since they probably evolved really close together and all!! As for how do some cats (like Wild and his crew) talk naturally... idk honestly. Maybe there was another, much smaller meteor they just happened to near of? Idk i'm just building this
Btw, i found it really found you just went like 'cats probably could talk but they just choose not to' bc i'm. P sure that was the same thing the Cat from Coraline says when asked abt why he talks in the Other World. He kind of implies he COULD talk in the normal world, he just doesn't wanna :P peak cattitude fr
I think i'm gonna start signing my asks? I like stars and sparkles so... -💖🌟✨️💫 <- this'll do
YEAH THAT'S INDEED PEAK CATTITUDE LMAOOO I LOVE THAT CAT IN THE CORALINE MOVIE and if you have cats or knows someone who does, you'll notice they don't meow to interact between themselves, save when they're babies or to show aggressiveness. They keep mostly to body/smell language. And meows to humans! Because humans are idiots who are never getting over the need to vocalize for communication XD
IRL cats can literally talk (their own language) but they're beyond that- they dumb their communication down into sounds just because we are not at their level and they still want us to give them their grub. It's free food, why wouldn't they want it??
As for the meteor theory? YOU'RE SO RIGHT IT COULD'VE HAPPENED TOO!!! And makes a lot of sense!!
And ayyyyy, welcome to the world of Paw Patrol!! XD I'm new here myself too! I only started watching it back in January. I had friends from my local furry group recommending this show to me for years now and Idk why I didn't watch it before. I guess my brain is just that stubborn. It knew I'd get hooked and couldn't afford being hooked into both Transformers and Paw Patrol at the same time. Now that I've slowed down on Transformers, it finally decided to let me get into another show and Paw Patrol was the chosen one to be watched XD
Will you remember all the emojis every time? Though that's a very smart idea and I like it!! I think I'm gonna refer to you as my Sparkly Anon in this case!

Prehistoric Planet review: #1 - Deserts
Tumblr media
While “Deserts” focuses on my least favorite biome, who would’ve thought it would be the best episode of the season showcasing dinosaurs with unique adaptations for survival in these desolate areas. We start with a bang with a herd of male Dreadnoughtus traveling to their mating grounds away from their forest dwelling that is crowded with hundreds of females. A “clash-of-the-titans” spectacle ensures when two males fight for the right to mate with some fantastic music to go with it, showcasing the size and power of these sauropods. Makes you want to bang the air like beating a drum to it.
I loved the sequence featuring the Mononykus, a small Mongolian dinosaur that reminds you of a roadrunner with features like owls in how it uses its facial disc to sense prey since it doesn’t have ears. I was introduced to this dinosaur in “Chased by Dinosaurs” with Nigel Marven and it was completely different from what is depicted here. Looked more like Ornithomimus and I was under that impression for quite a while till then. I would love to see this in “Jurassic World Evolution 2” one day.
We have another spectacular sequence, showcasing a watering hole covered with hundreds of dinosaurs getting their fill of water before it dries up. Not just herbivores are there, but also carnivores including a Tarbosaurus, an Asian cousin to Tyrannosaurus. Watching it appear on a sand dune from a distance with other dinosaurs busy drinking is my favorite shot of the entire season. The sequence also reminded me of the water truce from Jon Favreau’s Jungle Book. I just love how both predator and prey would put their differences aside to have some water.
We move to North Africa for a mating ground for Barbaridactylus, pterosaurs with impressive bony crests. It shows how dominant males would fight for their place among the smaller females, but what’s more impressive is that some males don’t get that big nor grow those large crests and tend to be sneaky. It was hilarious watching a larger male mistake the sneaky male by displaying. Was it showing off by accident or on purpose? Who knows. But the lesson here is that there’s more to impressing a girl than with size and strength, but being sneaky is not the best tactic.
Our last sequence is more serene as we watch a herd of hadrosaurs called Secernosaurus travel through sand dunes made of gypsum to parts where there’s more food. It was interesting to see them use the stars to guide them at night. I know one or some animals to do that but can’t think of it. Another cool moment was them licking off droplets of water from the fog of seawater as a source of water.
Another thing I appreciate is how the show doesn’t end with the typical extinction event like in “Walking with Dinosaurs” or “When Dinosaurs Roamed America.” Sure, there’s that dreadfulness when the final episode fades to black that it’s happened but looking back at each episode and comparing with the finale of “Walking With,” the world is still full of life at the time and not choking to death from increased volcanic activity. I don’t know if we will see that in the future, but it’s doubtful. And that concludes my reviews for the first season and look forward to traveling back to the prehistoric planet next Monday. 😉
3.5/4 stars.
P.S. It was interesting seeing the Dreadnoughtus expose gular sacs to impress females like frigatebirds and anole lizards. 😉

What is your opinion on prehistoric planet? I only got it watch it due to getting the free 3 month trial for my new iPad
Prehistoric Planet was a much-needed shift in how we present paleontology media. I'd argue it's the Walking With Dinosaurs of its generation.
The most important thing Prehistoric Planet does is treat the dinosaurs and their contemporaries as animals instead of monsters. They're not shrink-wrapped - they have body fat - and they perform behaviors that are familiar to us because they're similar to modern animals. This is crucial to making them more approachable as regular fauna instead of these otherworldly monsters a lot of dinosaur media depicts them as. I especially appreciate the feathers being depicted, because my childhood hero was Mark Norell of AMNH, one of the paleontologists who first discovered that some dinosaurs did have feathers. A lot of people didn't like that at the time, and there are people who still don't, but science has more or less accepted this (and that birds are dinosaurs!) so that's that.
The one thing I'm not keen on is that the team who did the animation work was not properly credited, because Apple doesn't seem to care. Their work is incredible, and they deserve to be given credit for everything they did in making these animals come to life. The company is listed - MPC - but the individual artists are not, and personally, I don't think that's okay.
Overall, though, I think it's a big step in the right direction from a documentary standpoint. The behavior is speculative, but in ways that make sense because they're all behaviors animals alive today perform, so it isn't as much of a stretch as it could be. Obviously we don't know what colors they were, or what their plumage looked like, or whether those sauropods had those neck sacs, but it's fun to imagine and treating them with the respect that we treat animals that aren't extinct allows people to feel more attached to them!
I mean, look how many people fell in love with Mononykus:
Tumblr media
The documentary treated her like any modern animal documentary would, and combined with her cuteness she endeared herself to everybody.
If this gets a whole new generation (as well as people who never were interested beforehand) into dinosaurs and other prehistoric life, I'm happy!

all the little things of my school president episode 12 that really got me:
how tinn’s mom changes the subject when she notices tinn is scared which encapsulates their relationship: they love and care for each other deeply, but there was always still that distance between them, something that tinn’s mom realizes
how gun is fine with hiding the relationship, because he understands tinn’s worry, how it’s not always easy to come out to a family member, or to show your love to a world that isn’t always accepting
the acknowledgement of the heteronormativity around them, but tiw also saying that it’s because of the older generation, and they’re hopeful for the day where the dinosaurs are extinct and humans rule the earth
yo knowing since episode 7 but not saying a word because it wasn’t his place to tell.
i loved how kajorn’s anger wasn’t because they were dating, but rather because he felt as the student president, tinn could have shown favoritism towards the music club. kajorn was always set up as a character who was a stickler for rules, so it makes sense that he would feel hurt that who he looked up to and thought was leading the student council well could possibly have been using his position for other means.
(but of course, thank you tiw for putting him in his place and reminding kajorn that even if that may have seemed like the case, tinn did do his work as a school president)
gun doing what he thought was best to hide their relationship, especially since just earlier in the episode, he could tell about tinn’s fear of letting anyone know. but then tinn! coming in and realizing he doesn’t care anymore, because secretly gun is sad about not being able to share their relationship to the world, and tinn cares about nothing but gun’s happiness!!!
that one scene where sound and yo are practicing guitar in the background, cause like i think the actor playing yo does not know how a guitar works lol
“i told you. no one cares about people’s sexual orientation these days. it’s a new world.” it’s a naive thought but also a powerful one, related again to what tiw said before
which right after the scene that win says that, goes straight to tinn’s mom and the text messages she’s getting from others, “worried” about her son’s reputation.
there’s a tumblr post going around that really took the homophobic teacher scene to a new level for me: how it’s realistic homophobia, not dramatic and screaming and utter hatred, but rather a subtle disgust mixed with fake concern.
and kajorn coming out of nowhere to punch him!! dude has had one hell of a day(?). basically he quit the school council and then starts punching teachers
tinn’s mom coming through in support of her son! she’s still worried but loves him too much to let her worry affect him as well
chinzilla and tiw outside running straight to the office, and sound saying he used to respect the teacher but not anymore - because sometimes even the adults we respect will disappoint us
at the end of the prom scene where now gun can show his love!! and he’s just all smiles and happiness
and even with the happiness, there is still a hint of disapproval from the adults, but (after tinn’s mom’s encouragement), their peers still cheer them on <3

I take it you didn't like JW-Dominion too much?
Yeah no, I belong to the group of people who think Dominion is a mess, but for a slightly different reason than everyone else. Saying that, it’s great how everyone can enjoy different things so don’t let yourself be discouraged by negative reviews and simply like what you like.
Spoilers under the cut for Jurassic World Dominion, Jurassic Park and the entire Jurassic Franchise in case you haven’t seen the movies yet.
Alright, there are two main reasons why I dislike Dominion. It’s because the dinosaurs are too dangerous and because the dinosaurs are not dangerous enough (yes, please bear with my rant, it might make sense eventually. Lol)
The dinosaurs are too dangerous:
In Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs were so dangerous that the human characters had only two choices once the dinos got out of their enclosures. To either flee the island and get to safety elsewhere or to stay there and be eaten. It had these horror elements of the dinos being highly aggressive monsters who took over the top of the food chain and reduced humans (and animals) to mere meals. Was that biologically accurate? Nope, at least not entirely. Dinosaurs were simply different breeds of animals, so chances are high that they acted similar to “our animals today”, too. Meaning that they didn’t care about potential food walking by if they’d already eaten.
Now, did we care about that? No. Because Jurassic Park wasn’t a nature’s documentary but an action flick from Hollywood and we wanted humans to be eaten… Besides, the dinosaurs weren’t animals made by nature but in a lab and who knows what genes were added or tweaked. BUT the thing is that they were made too dangerous for humans (and animals) to co-exist beside them. When they were stuck on some islands that was manageable. Humans and most animals simply didn’t live there, maybe aside from some birds and critters. (I mean, the only bigger animals we saw in the first movies like the famous goat in Jurassic Park was brought there by humans). There’s a good reason, after all, that most animals we know today only thrived once the dinos went extinct.
Of course, then that stupid decision in Fallen Kingdom happened and the dinosaurs were let loose on the mainland, which was the worst decision in the franchise since creating them in the first place. I remember reading back then how many fans said that so many humans would die as a result of that decision. But I also remember that I thought “who cares about the humans, what about the animals?” And I was right to some extent because you don’t see the carnivorous dinos eat the herbivorous dinos in Dominion. You only see them chewing on humans and deer and foxes and rabbits and so on – which are much easier prey because they lack the armor but also a tiny snack compared to a Triceratops. Not to mention that “our animals” in Dominion acted so stupid. Why would a deer (a flight animal) just stand there while a dinosaur is stomping around and slashing it open? And I guess some animals like dogs don’t exist at all anymore? Cause just think about taking your puppy for a walk and seeing a raptor in the woods – yep, that’s gonna end well… And saying that, why isn’t every human in Dominion carrying a gun on them as soon as they leave the house? You know, to kill the dinosaurs who want to eat them at a distance instead of using tasers and knifes which would bring them into chomping-range?
The dinosaurs are not dangerous enough:
Saying all that, the dinosaurs of the Jurassic World movies are way too tame now. To explain what I mean with this, let’s all remember the greatness that was the original Jurassic Park (which is still in my personal top three of the best movies ever made). It was suspenseful, atmospheric and had you at the edge of your seat the whole time because it wasn’t just one random action scene and one random dinosaur after the other.
First there was the T-Rex, which was built up so great with the vibrating water in the cup and the “where’s the goat-line” and the knowledge of ‘it’s coming’ before Rexie actually appeared. The fear was ramped up so masterfully and you had this sense of ‘it can’t get any worse than this’. But then it DID get worse with the Velociraptors who were not only hella smart but working together in a group.
Now, what’s left from that in the newer movies? The raptors were basically turned into trained dogs in Jurassic World, who would obey Owen because of a treat as well as the magical hand. (And don’t even get me started on that ridiculous magical hand!) Also, back in the days of good movies there were actually some characters eaten and hurt and you never knew who it would be. Meanwhile, in the World movies you just sit back relaxed and are like “yeah, whatever, you’re all gonna survive anyway” when the characters are hunted by another apex predator. The plot armor is so thick by now that it really takes away all the excitement. And not only aren’t the characters not dying, they aren’t even injured. I mean, let’s take away the dinos for a moment. In Dominion, there was a plane crash (and why did Claire have to eject herself from it to save herself when all three were just fine in the end?), there was a car rolling over and over and Owen was taking a dip in an icy lake (and how did he get out so fast cause that isn’t humanly possible – is he turning into Frog-Man or something?) People die in these sorts of situations or are grievously wounded. Add to that a few dinosaurs intend on eating human flesh and it’s actually laughable that all the main characters are standing around at the end and chatting with not even a scratch on their bodies. Come on, you somehow managed to make the dinosaurs less dangerous than a tiger or crocodile…
The writers could have gone either way with this movie:
They could have made it go back to its roots were the dinos were actually scary and would take over the top of the food chain on the mainland, with people only surviving in little groups in bunkers or on remote islands (kinda a reverse Jurassic Park situation). The main story line could have been one of these groups needing to get somewhere else to safety or needing to rescue another group. And they even had the right dinosaur to make that interesting!! And no, I don’t mean the Giganotosaurus, who did nothing for me or the movie. Dear writers, we don’t always want bigger (and it wasn’t even that much bigger than Rexie?) cause that’s a very one-dimensional way of thinking and ultimately lazy writing. But there was the Pyroraptor right there, that feathery raptor at the ice lake, and it had SO MUCH potential to star as the main threat in this movie which just wasn’t used. Cause they didn’t only give it feathers but wings! Scientists aren’t actually sure if (or how well) it could fly, soar, climb, swim and dive, but Hollywood never much cared about accuracy (they already made it much bigger than it actually was anyway). So just imagine this group of people escaping this Pyroraptor which could do it all and every time they thought it couldn’t follow them, it surprised them again and they’d be like “alright, we’re officially dead now…”
Or the writers could have made the dinos tame and portrayed them like any animal. Which would mean that the characters could just walk by a T-Rex that had just eaten and be like “hey, what’s up buddy” and he would just blink and take a nap. In that case, the end sequence might even make sense. But then again, no, it wouldn’t. Because why would horses and elephants and birds and whales and so on agree for dinosaurs to walk/fly/swim amongst them - dinosaurs that could easily trample them to death or eat them?!
In the end, neither of the two happened and we got this weird middle thing where the writers didn’t know what they wanted. And it just didn’t work for me. The only good thing was to see Ian Malcolm again who is hands-down the best character of the whole franchise. But then again, he's also in Jurassic Park, which is a much better movie all around, so I’ll just go back and enjoy that one for the hundreds time…

HISTORY
In the wake of the 7 hour war and the proceeding Combine invasion, there was a large amount of casualties. However, not all of these casualties were humans. Animals took a lot of hits as well, and in the remaining 20 years before liberation, the resulting environmental tolls as well as continued extermination caused this sixth mass extinction- arguably just as bad or worse than the meteorite that killed the dinosaurs. Nearly 75% of land animals and over 68% of marine animals went extinct in this time frame.
The most notable toll was on human-domesticated animals. Because of the Combine influence, any animal that was reliant on human care was almost immediately wiped out, both purposefully and inadvertently as humans were no longer available to care for them. All livestock species and most pet species were completely eliminated, leaving humans with few, if no animal companions.
Humans, however, are a very social species, and are naturals at befriending things that are arguably dangerous. Wolves, cats, and even less common creatures such as foxes, snakes, and spiders were kept and tamed and bred for companionship and work despite their danger. When the Combine forces were driven off and humans were once again allowed to practice the art of domestication, they were left with very few options. Some birds, a few select felines, insects, and alien species were nearly all they had to work with.
And so, work they did.
Headcrabs, despite their use as a weapon by the Combine, were one of the first alien species to actually be domesticated. It is theorized that this is because a number of factors- first is that the one of the leading rebellion leaders, Dr. Isaac Kleiner, actually possessed one name “Lamarr”, putting the idea in many people’s heads that they could be tamed and kept. The second was their abundance. They were easy to find and acquire, and despite their danger, could easily be captured. Third, they are very easy to selectively breed and mass produce. Lastly, it was quickly discovered that headcrabs are much more intelligent and social than previously anticipated.
In the wild of their home planet, Xen, headcrabs actually had a very complex social system and niche. They formed large groups- called casts- that staked out swathes of territory. The leader of the group was called a gonarch. The gonarch was a large, heavily mutated headcrab that was the sole reproducer, similar to that of queen bees or ants. Though it was large, fast, and capable of defending itself, it lost it’s ability to easily feed itself, as it’s mouth became much smaller to make room for the reproductive sac.
Because of that, the rest of the cast was tasked with hunting and feeding the gonarch in exchange for protection and reproduction. The smaller, albeit still mature headcrabs would go out, and attempt to hunt down anything it could- smaller things were eaten or fed to the gonarch, and larger things that had the right shaped heads could be ‘coupled’ with, fusing the headcrab to it’s host and creating a gonome. Though gonomes were more powerful and capable of hunting larger prey and defending the rest of the cast, in turn, they lost their ability to reproduce. Thus, most casts had one gonarch, several gonomes, and many crabs.
Gonomes could come in any species that was large enough for a headcrab to couple with- and is perhaps why headcrabs were actually so easy to tame. With the right social encouragement, a headcrab can easily recognize humans and other larger creatures as being part of their cast, and regard them in the same way they would a gonome- with social respect and friendliness.
With a few generations of selective breeding, headcrabs quickly became much more docile due to their natural instinct of accepting oddly-shaped creatures as part of their cast.
CARE AND HANDLING
Despite the generations of breeding leading to a much more friendly, domesticated headcrab, care must still be exercised with them in regards to handling. They are very similar to cats in the fact that, despite their domestication, they can still be wild at nature and will often hunt smaller creatures, and are capable of harming someone if provoked.
Also similar to cats are their sense of community. Like mentioned, headcrabs can be trained and raised to see certain people- usually a household- as part of their cast. However, this presents a problem with strangers entering their ‘territory’. If not properly socialized, headcrabs can be quite aggressive to anyone they don’t recognize as part of their cast. This is beneficial for those who don’t expect anyone, or want a ‘guard dog’ type of pet- but can be detrimental to those who have friends or family that may come to visit.
Though headcrabs lack eyes, they are not completely blind. They have subdermal eyes located near the base of their front legs, which can detect lights and shapes. That, combined with their ability to ‘taste’ the air with specialized glands, are how they recognize others and their environment.
If you plan on having someone visit, it may be best to have something that smells like the visitor on hand for a few weeks beforehand, so your headcrab can become used to their scent.
For headcrabs that don’t mind activity, you can also take your headcrabs on walks or trips into public to get them accustomed to having strange scents and people around them, leading them to be less aggressive, even at home. Of course, it is always a good idea to have proper restraint for any flighty, aggressive, or even headcrabs that have never been socialized in public before.
Another good way to prevent injury is physical modification. For headcrabs that simply are rowdy or aggressive- or even just as a precaution for the most well behaved crab- there are several things you can do to prevent injury.
When headcrabs first started being tamed, the most common method of modification was ‘debeaking’. Despite it’s name, it’s actually a misnomer, as headcrabs don’t have beaks, only radial rings and fangs. ‘Debeaking’ was the process of removing all 18 fangs on the underside of the crab surgically, usually when young. This prevents them from growing back and completely eliminates the risk of being bitten.
However, this practice was quickly upturned under the argument of it being inhumane. While the headcrab often doesn’t suffer because of this, as their fangs are only used for gripping prey and not eating it- if done incorrectly, it can be painful in the long run.
One of the slightly more common methods are ‘fang caps’. Similar to claw caps for cats, fang caps are a small, plastic cap that can be fitted over the fangs of a headcrab. With a small amount of specialty glue, they become long-lasting solutions for injury prevention with no physical harm to your crab. Despite the seemingly perfect upsides, there are also precautions you must take. It is possible for a fang cap to become loose or fall off either through being applied incorrectly or simply from wear and tear. Thus, you must always monitor the state of the caps to ensure there are no accidents.
The third option, and the least used, is clipping. Though it does not remove the whole fang, clipping refers to filing down/clipping each fang individually so it’s not sharp. However, this is generally not only difficult, but it’s actually uncomfortable for the crab, and they can grow back fairly quickly.
For headcrabs that are properly either defanged or capped, there is little to no risk of being bitten. If a properly cared for headcrab does attack or try to mount your head, it can simply be pulled off, as there’s nothing allowing it to grip onto it’s ‘prey’.
However, you must still be mindful of the long, sharp front claws. Unlike the fangs, these do not have nerves until very deep in- and thus, can be slightly trimmed and filed with no discomfort on your crab’s end.
FEEDING
Headcrabs- despite their predatory nature- are not only social, but omnivores as well. This fact comes as a surprise to some people who look at them and compare them to things such as spiders.
Indeed, though a headcrab is most definitely a predator, they’re more opportunistic than anything. They will often eat nearly anything they wander across, including small creatures, decaying corpses, fruits, fungi, algaes and lichens, and very occasionally some vegetables and leafy matter.
Most of what they eat is less dependent on taste, and more of their actual physical ability to eat it. Because of their hyper specialized mouthparts, they are unable to chew. Instead, they scrape at the soft parts of whatever is fitted into their mouth with a specialized, rough ring around the inner mouth fitted with a bunch of extremely small ‘teeth’, similar to that of a lamprey. Thus, they can only eat what they can scrape off with that, and cannot chew bones or anything hard or with too much roughage. It’s non uncommon to see a headcrab take something into it’s mouth, such as a small bone or rock covered in lichen- ‘suck’ it clean, and spit it back out.
Thus, headcrabs can be fed nearly anything that they can fit into their mouth. Of course, that is within reason- it’s always good to look up what is or isn’t toxic to your crab, as well as feed them specialty diets to make sure they get all of the proper nutrients they need without over or underfeeding.
The most common way to feed is with commercial ‘crabcakes’- rounded nutrient blocks resembling a large piece of kibble, that comes in several sizes to fit in any crab’s mouth. Once given, a headcrab will take about a few hours to eat it, and don’t need to be fed again for another few days, or up to a week, depending on activity and how many supplemental treats are given in between. Though it’s perfectly fine to feed them only cakes or only prepared food, the most enriching and balanced option is feeding the cakes once a week, with smaller, daily ‘treats’ of different varieties being given.
Some of these treats can include:
Pieces of meat (any type, cooked or raw)
Small, whole prey (commercially prepared mice or chicks)
Whole or sliced fruits (apple, pear, etc)
Tubers (potato, sweet potato, carrot)
Hard vegetables / stalks (chopped celery, broccoli, etc)
Mushrooms (anything edible by humans is edible for your crab)
As a special treat, sometimes you can replace a cake with a large ‘prey’ item that would also take several hours to eat. Some examples are:
Large whole prey (Whole birds, large chunks of meat, antlion grubs, etc)
Large fruits (Melons of any type are a favorite)
Large vegetables (heads of cabbage, heads of broccoli, etc)
Of course, any meat-based items are going to be chosen over non-meat items if offered.
BREEDING
Breeding headcrabs, unlike many other creatures, is generally not something that can be done unless you are a committed hobbyist. Namely because normal headcrabs- even if they are mature- are incapable of breeding whatsoever. The only type of headcrab that can reproduce are the gonarch, the heads of the cast. All headcrabs are biologically ‘male’ until they transform into a gonarch, or lost reproductive organs entirely as a gonome.
Originally a gonarch was produced when there simply wasn’t a gonarch in the group. The largest, strongest individual would then begin to grow and mutate, similar to how many fishes can mutate into a larger or opposite gender if needed.
However, this ability was removed from the headcrab- along with the ability to create proper gonomes- by the combine when they were being used as weapons. Though headcrabs were efficient at taking care of humans, anything larger and more dangerous threated to get out of hand; the combine didn’t want them reproducing out of control and becoming another threat. Incidentally, this is also when their eyes became subdermal as part of a side effect of gene altering.
Because of this, there are only two ways to breed a headcrab. One, and the most common, is to create an artificial gonarch sack. Blueprints were taken from the combine after their defeat that allowed humans to replicate the same technology that allowed them to mass-produce them before.
Artificial gonarch sacs are similar to ‘ghosts hearts’ where they are pseudo-biological, and accept any DNA put into it. Thus, you can insert DNA from any crab to become the ‘gonarch’ or ‘female’ DNA, and either get the smaller male to ‘mount’ the artificial gonarch in a specialized area, or do the male portion artificially as well.
The artificial womb also lets you control how many offspring are produced, as normally a gonarch can produce hundreds of crabs from each successful mating- too many, often, to properly take care of.
Much less common is the artificial transformation of a true gonarch.
Any headcrab can be stimulated to turn into a gonarch with the injection of artificial hormones that trigger the process. It will then take a few weeks to a few months for the crab to transform.
However, this is not recommended for a number of reasons.
First, they are large. They need much more than a house for their territory- they often need several acres, and if it’s deemed unsuitable for a nest, she will refuse to breed and become agitated.
Second, they are very territorial, aggressive, and dominant. If you were a gonome to them before, you still are- which means, in headcrab ranks, she is now above you, socially. Even the most docile crab becomes an aggressive, protective creature who will defend her young and territory with her life. Combine that with their massive size, they are extremely dangerous, even to a professional.
Third, it is very hard to regulate the exact breeding. She will only accept other headcrabs from her cast, and if she deems them unfit, will promptly kill them. And even once they are bred, they can produce several hundred offspring- of which it is very hard to take care of, and even harder to take away from her due to her protective nature.
Lastly, she cannot feed by herself. She requires being fed specialized food through specialized apparatus- and a lot of it.
It’s expensive, costly, and overall dangerous. Thus, artificial gonarch sacs are generally the go-to.
COLORS AND PATTERNS
Just like with previous animals that were domesticated, such as cats, dogs, and goldfish, after a few generations of breeding they began to exhibit unique colors and patterns. After enough time, unique, recognized colors, coats, and even breeds came to be official recognized.
It was made even easier because breeding for exact genes was made simple by means of artificial sacs. Thus, headcrabs come in a vast array of colors and patterns, some even unique to certain subspecies.
The most common colors are pale, albeit warm shades of tans, yellows, and browns. In more rare cases, they can take a more green, purple, or red tint.
Tan, ash, sand, and flaxen were the first recognized distinct colors that were bred onto headcrabs. Chocolate and umber quickly arose from the original tan, with rose following not far behind. When rose was cross-bred back with umber, it resulted in lilac.
Golden arose when sand crabs were bred for vibrancy, and sorrel was the result of a cross of golden and umber.
Flaxen gave way to wheat, and then swamp when bred for the cooler, greenish mutation.
Patterns, too, were something that quickly came about, not long after the first distinct colors began to be recognized.
The first patterns that arose were speckled, striped, and Siamese (named after the similar patterned cat).
Fawned came from a recessive mutation that reversed the pigment cells that caused the spotting pattern on speckled crabs, making them appear lighter instead of darker. Pearled arose when it was cross-bred back with speckled- which usually resulted in speckled, but sometimes in pearled. Because fawned is recessive, the only way to get fawned is to breed with another fawned or a pearled. Breeding a fawned and a speckled results in only speckled or pearled.
Snowshoe, similarly, rose from the same recessive mutation, though this time with Siamese. Similar rules apply; though an ‘in between’ similar to pearled does not exist, as they simply neutral each other out.
Capped rose from Siamese, though it looks similar to bullseye. Bullseye actually came from a very hyper specific mutation of smoked, and is one of the most rare patterns, much moreso than capped or smoked.
Striped crabs are what were bred into both smoke and ticked- with smoke being an increased level of pigment, and ticked being a decreased level.
Marbled is another very rare pattern with dubious origins. Some say it’s a standalone mutation, though others say it originated with smoke, bullseye, and even speckled. However, none of these are confirmed.
Of course, all of the patterns and colors on the charts above are not every single example- there are many more sub-variations of colors and patterns of each type, these are just the main, conformed and recognized ones. They also don’t include any non-recognized crossbreeds or mixes of colors or patterns that aren’t an established record.
UNIQUE BREEDS
Even moreso than recognized colors and patterns are unique breeds of crabs. Though, again, not even breed pictured above are all of them, these are just some of the more noteworthy examples.
Truthfully, nearly all crabs are going to be your standard breed, and not one of the ones pictured. Unless it is either obvious or has had a genetics test, it is safe to assume your crab is a standard.
Two of the most recognized sub-species are the racer and the false poison. These were both bred to be inspired by the combine-created species, the “fast” headcrab and the poison headcrab. Their target audience both began for people who liked them in theory or as an aesthetic, but lacked the funds, ability, or want to deal with the much more dangerous and aggressive ‘true’ versions.
Because they were intended for war, fast headcrabs and poison headcrabs lack almost all social aspects that standards do, are much more aggressive, flighty, wild, and dangerous. Not to mention to potent neurotoxin than poison headcrabs excrete, and the vicious teeth of fast headcrabs. Nowadays theyre both often bred for show or work, but we aren’t focused on them here, simply the standard crab.
Pancakes are some of the harder to recognized subspecies, due to their generally unassuming appearance. They’re named so because they’re typically ‘flatter’ than the normal headcrab, tend to range in the golden-sandy color range, and are described as being ‘soft and sweet’. True to that, that is the original purpose that pancakes were bred for- they’re small, lazy, hyper-friendly headcrabs that almost never attempt to show any signs of aggression unless severely pushed. They’re great for households with kids, or simply people who want a slightly less high-maintenance crab.
They can come in nearly any pattern and color, but again, tend to be in the warm, golden-yellow tone range.
Hunchbacks are a much more narrow breed, since it's recessive, and tend to be not as desirable for no other fact than their appearance. Still, that are amazingly unique. Because of the rarer, recessive nature, they generally only swamp/wheat/greenish colors, and only come in a narrower range of patterns, including speckled, smoked, striped, ticked, and marbled. Though, because of the fact that speckled exist, pearled and fawned theoretically could too- there’s simply yet to be documented evidence of a successful fawned mutation.
Nubbed is another breed caused by a rare mutation that has been successfully bred into a small population. It’s very easy to spot because of it; the mutation clearly causing their front claws to be short, or ‘nubbed’. Nubbed can come in any color or pattern, though they tend to follow the standard/less extreme patterns and colors. This is because it was because of a mutation that actually happened really early in domestication, before a lot of colors or patterns were even bred, and is a recessive mutation making it hard to breed with rarer colors and patterns.
Saddlehorns are an extremly unique and very specialized breed. They’re definitely recognizable by their concave back and the nub near the base of their front claws. They also have a pattern that's unique to only saddlehorns- which is the 'cow spotted' pattern. However, it isn’t just random spots. Though they do have large splotches, they always have a band going around their middle as well. They can come in any pale color, and the markings are usually in the brown to dark, almost black range.
Bunin or “Bubbleheads” are actually a relative of hunchbacks, and not saddlehorns, despite the head similarity. They tend to follow the same rules as hunchbacks, but instead of greenish tones, they come in golds, yellows and warm-orange tones. There has also been confirmed cases of fawned and pearled bubbleheads.
Volkov are a common, albeit specific breed that's bred for it's ferocity, but also it's loyalty. They’re often easy to mistake for a standard, and combined with their relative commonality make them hard to identify to the untrained eye. They appear like standard headcrabs, except they have a slight hunch to them. Their real difference lies in the personality.
As mentioned, they’re loyal and very attentive to the rest of their cast, but have a ferocity and sharp hunting ability that comes with it’s protectiveness. They’re often used as pest control or ‘guard dogs’.  This makes them suitable for those jobs, but poor choices for people who live in high population areas or have lots of visitors.
They generally come in browns and blacks, but can truthfully come in any color. They can come in MOST patterns- all but smoked and bullseye.
Batas are another weird breed with a unique patterns, which is the squiggly markings centralized on their rump. They only really come in variations of the color pictured, golds, flaxens, and sandy. Similar to pancakes, they're known for being very complacent with handling, making them good for those with kids or for shows, where the more prominent the markings the better they judge. The difference is the fact that the whole breed itself is prone to many health problems, as it’s very recessive and commonly inbred. Purebreds are pretty expensive.
Silkies or “thinskins” are a breed that came from a mutation that caused their skin to be extremely thin. They're questionable morally to keep, since they're prone to getting wounded very easily, even by their own fangs and claws. Because of this, they have to be debeaked and/or declawed, or must have fang caps at all times and their front claws filed regularly, les they hurt themselves.
They also generally have a myriad of other health problems because of the inbreeding needed to get them, and are prone to several diseases, skin problems, and increased chance of injury.
They generally dont have any patterns, but come in most all colors. However, because of their thin skin, their yellow blood tends to show through, giving any color a yellow tint- and appearing outright yellow on lighter coats.
Munchkins aren’t as much of a breed as they are a mutation, and can come in any color or pattern because of it. There can even be munchkins of other breeds.
Hookclaws are a very newly recognized breed, and still have yet to be fully explored. So far, they can come in pretty much any color, but they never have any patterns aside from a heavy gradient on their back. More research is being done to try and breed patterns onto them.
SUMMARY
Despite their nefarious beginnings, headcrabs quickly arose as a very common, domesticated companion in the post-combine years. Though they aren’t for everybody, they make a fascinating, unique pet for those willing to put in the work and research. Or, even if you aren’t interested in adoption; the history and genetics are a fascinating, competitive, and potentially lucrative field for any young entrepreneur.
So whether you’re looking for a new companion, someone to guard the house while you’re away, or simply a new career in genetics, headcrabs are an amazing species to look into.

Just wanted to say I love ur oppys. Like. Its rare to see sci fi/fantasy/spec fic that is at once like. Prehistoric and nonhuman I guess. But also so cozy! Like, yes weve seen all our fantasy europes, some scattered fantasy asias, and a fantasy africa or two. Which are great! But like. I love seeing projects like this. Thank you. Ur stuff is kinda inspiring.
Also, do you have any plans for what youre going to do with this setting?
Thank you! For people to see my work and to have it inspire them is high praise. This is a long ramble below the cut.
I’m glad you like the oppy’s world. The framing as a prehistoric world is an incidental thing that I started leaning into in the last year or so. The choros have always been somewhat terror bird-like and oppies have become more primitive mammal-esk with their design recently, so it has felt natural to include some other recently extinct fauna in their world. Before this decision I considered making the animals chimeras in the vein of Avatar the Last Airbender, but I never drew much content of that. It didn’t feel right.
That said, while some of the animals look prehistoric, I don’t think of it as prehistoric in the sense of “this is a story from our world’s past.” And I probably wouldn’t call it a prehistoric world on the metaphorical bookjacket of this setting. It’s a fantasy world first, before a sci fi or spec bio one, if the distinction makes sense? I do really enjoy spec bio and sci fi, and really if you see it as sci fi, that doesn’t bother me.
In terms of plans for this setting, I am working on a 2d animated hand drawn short film set in a version of the oppy’s world. It’s about an oppy named Fern who finds an egg on a riverbank! I’ll tag it below so you can see my work in progress. Other than the short film, which is about 4 minutes 10 seconds as of the most recent draft (a huge project because animation is slow), I will continue to draw my characters here as my own ongoing worldbuilding and character project. Some other projects in this setting may pique my interest as time goes on, who knows.
(I could say “I want to write a book” here, but everyone says that about everything lol)
If you’re interested in xenofiction with prehistoric settings, there is the Silverwing standalone prequel set at the point of bats evolving flight, I haven’t read it but I hear it is pretty good? I know even less about Raptor Red, just that it’s dinosaur xenofiction, and then there is Ratha’s Creature, which is supposed to from the perspective of the extinct North American cheetah species? I think? I’m probably embarrassing myself with these recollections. This is just stuff I remember off the top of my head.
It might be a stretch to say Hunters Unlucky is prehistoric, but there are no human characters in it, and there are living thylacine relatives in it, so maybe it counts? Hunters is the only book in this ramble that I’ve actually read myself, and I can vouch for it being really good.
And on Tumblr, @papermonkeyism has worldbuilding about intelligent troodons. (I think troodons have been renamed by paleontologists sometime in the last couple of years but again my memory fails me... I will stick with troodon for now.)
I don’t know any other worldbuilders who have specifically prehistoric settings but I’m sure there are others!

Kojima Cinema Vol. 4: Lost World
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Greetings from Kojima Cinema in the U.S.
At the end of the previous month we went to the United States to attend the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), as well to research data for Metal Gear Solid. For this installment of Kojima Cinema, I'll discuss Lost World, the sequel to Jurassic Park, which I snuck out to see after attending E3, as well as its creator Michael Crichton (who happens to be one of my favorite authors).
By the way, Lost Warld (as in a combination of World and War) was the title of a canceled project that was planned to be my first game.
Lost World from Atlanta
I saw Lost World in a movie theater inside the CNN building in Atlanta. Since it hasn't been released in Japan yet, I was able to see it without any preconceived notions, but it ended up being very disappointing. Certainly there's a lot more CGI than the first movie and the dinosaurs are even better animated, but the story was way too much like a Godzilla movie. (Or maybe it was more like King Kong? Perhaps it's closer to Gappa: The Triphibian Monster?) At any rate, what happened to Michael Crichton's original story? I felt like going to Steven Spielberg and tell him "please, don't ruin Crichton's work anymore!"
Better CGI, But Half The Impact
I'm already used to seeing CGI dinosaurs, so there wasn't as much of an impact as there was for the first movie. I remember being moved to tears during the first movie when the Brachiosaurus, the first dinosaur, showed up as if I was glad to see one alive. There's a similar scene in this movie where they encounter a group of Stegosauruses and then Dr. Ian Malcolm says something along the lines of "everyone is impressed at first, but then they all run away" (there were no subtitles, so I'm not certain), which is nothing but ironic.
Jurassic Park: The Ride: The Movie
Ultimately the movie's priority is to charm the audience by showing off dinosaurs. It felt as if the plot and the characters were only added there as an excuse to showcase all the popular dinosaurs like the Compsognathus, the raptors and the T-Rex. It felt less like a movie written to tell a story and more like a film version of the "Jurassic Park: The Ride" attraction at Universal Studios. If you look at it with that perspective, it's a well-made and calculated film.
Despite A Noticeable Rut in the Production, Spielberg's Style is Still in Good Health
Spielberg's heart-pounding style is still in good health despite all of this. The scene where the trailer is falling off the edge of a cliff could be said to be one of the highlights in Spielberg's career. I don't like it very much, but the succession of one crisis after the other makes my hands sweat. Especially the gimmick of the glass gradually breaking is a novelty that no one else has done before. But I was left with one unanswered question. Why does the rear hatch of the trailer only has one sheet glass?
Unfortunately there were many scenes that ended up being not very interesting due to the usual hackneyed direction. There are many indirect effects that we're already familiar with, such as the camera tracking used since Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the use of lost limbs as seen in Jaws, rivers and waterfall turning red due to bloodshed, also seen in the original movie, and the swaying of trees and vibrations of water surfaces that gives the dinosaurs a sense of speed and weight... Perhaps the film would've been very different if the direction had been more creative. Was this the result of relying too much on CGI?
The Movie is Not The Novel
It's been two years since I've read the original novel by Michael Crichton, so I might not remember the details clearly, but it contained a certain message. He portrayed the habits of dinosaurs more extensively than in his first novel and even unraveled the dinosaur extinction theory with his novel ideas. In that sense, the book was less of a story and more of an academic study on dinosaurs. It also carried poignant criticisms and messages, such as warnings about technology and human society. As a fan of Crichton who was aware of the original novel, this film adaptation with its strong giant monster movie flavor left me dissastisfed.
About Michael Crichton
My introduction Michael Crichton was naturally The Andromeda Strain. Since then I've read all of his novels and essays that were translated to Japanese, including his work under the John Lange penname, all the way up to Airframe, with the exception of Eaters of the Dead. Crichton is one of the few authors whom I buy the first edition hardcovers from without hesitation. I've also seen many of the films he has directed such as Westworld, Coma, The Great Train Robbery, Runaway and even Looker. I like him as a filmmaker, even if he hasn't been holding the megaphone lately.
The Appeal of Crichton
Perhaps Crichton's appeal is that he has a visionary focus, creates a chaotic reality that is difficult to distinguish what is fact from fiction and skillfully embeds valuable information that few people know into his entertainment. The amount of data based on ideas and meticulous research is skillfully blended into products of entertainment. I aspire for the same thing Michael Crichton does in the games that I want to make. That's how I developed Snatcher and Policenauts, and it's the same thing with the upcoming Metal Gear Solid. The reason why I'm so fixated over creating a backstory or universe that doesn't really affect how a game works is because I want to get those aspects right.
Is A Fiction That Exceeds Reality Possible?
Lately there have been novels written by doctors, former mercenaries and even active policemen that ended up becoming hits. The realism and persuasiveness of such works is not something an average novelist can compete with just their imagination alone. Even I realized that when watching ER, a TV series that Michael Crichton created. What you create with knowledge will end up being completely different from what you create without. That's why asked for military advisor Motosada Mori to supervise the action and backstory in Metal Gear Solid. Recently, alongside Mr. Mori, we were able to gather research at a SWAT drill and a military base, where even saw an M1 tank. I think I was able to understand some things with such experience that I wouldn't able to from working at a desk alone. With Metal Gear Solid I hope I will able to create a video game with a Crichton-like aspect to it and not be lost in direction.

Ranger Rankings - Power Rangers Dino Charge/Dino Super Charge
Spoiler alert - these two were really great.
Premise - 4.5
The Energems give the team a reason to come together, and to stay together until everything's sorted. We've already had multiple dinosaur themed seasons, but this one really uses dinosaurs as a backdrop even moreso than Dino Thunder did, right up to the very end.
The mythology around the Energems evolves nicely, and it feels like something that's constantly important rather than just relevant when the plot demands it.
The museum setting works really well (although how many people need to work in a café at once?) and the idea of an intergalactic bounty hunter has been played with before, but these seasons really go in on that a bit more.
The only problem I have is that they could have been a little more serialised in the search for the Energems they didn't have, a la Operation Overdrive.
Character Dynamics - 4.5
This season's characters are all so good, I don't even know where to start. Everyone's totally different, and they take a little while to get to know one another and grow into their own. But they're all totally formed characters rather than just bullet point character traits, and they're all believable too.
Everyone has an arc, even people like Kendall who only really comes out of the cave when she needs to yell at people initially, and it doesn't feel like the story's weighted in anyone's favour particularly. Even Tyler, whose quest for his dad feels super-important, doesn't override everyone else's stories.
I just really love these idiots. They're all so good.
Sixth Ranger Arc - 4.5
If we just limit this to Ivan, then it's probably a 3.5 or something. He's great, but he does fade into the background a little every now and then after his initial arc. He gets some fun spotlights though, and I liked the relationship between him and Koda as men out of time.
But this season had the most Rangers ever on a team, so the entire series basically becomes a Sixth Ranger arc, because after Ivan and Phillip (who turn up in quick succession) there's James, Kendall, and Zenowing to take into account, and with each successive Ranger the team grows stronger and has even more interactions to balance.
Phillip's probably the least developed of them all - he has his initial arc of learning not to throw money and things and not to be a pompous ass, but after that he kind of just shows up as needed for Sentai footage. He's a good guy, but he does become a little faceless.
James' plotline takes its time to get going, but I liked his interplay with Tyler a lot. They actually had plausible reasons for him to go off and do his own thing too, I'm glad they took the time to explain his absences.
And Zenowing, who I thought would be daft, was actually a decent addition to the team. He's again totally different to everyone else, and he does have a role to play rather than just standing in the background.
Oh, and Kendall becoming a Ranger and just taking it in her stride and no one questioning her on it at all? Yeah, we like that.
Plot Development - 4
I'm proud of these seasons for having plots that thread through both Dino Charge and Super Dino Charge rather than just closing everything down at the end of one to start something new. Samurai did it too to an extent, whereas Megaforce you could basically cut down the middle. Dino Charge and Super Dino Charge really do feel like evolutions of one another.
The search for the Energems is a good impetus to keep everything going, and it presents good reasons for the villains to keep going after the Rangers specifically so they can take them back, rather than just attacking the Rangers because they're in the way.
If anything, there can sometimes be a few too many one-and-done episodes where the villains JUST go after the Rangers, which stalls the momentum somewhat, but you can't say that the threat doesn't escalate as the plot goes on. Compare where we start with where we end and it's such a huge difference.
Villains - 4.5
I don't think I've had as much fun with villains in a season since Lothor or Dai Shi.
Sledge could easily have become one-dimensional, but his relationships with everyone else on the ship kept him interesting. I never knew whether he was going to yell at Poisandra or kiss her.
Speaking of, Poisandra was hilarious. Again, she could have been far too one note, but they made her interesting in her own right by giving her her own plans, and Curio, while a tad bland, was a good straight man for her plots.
I did get a little bored of Fury by the end, but at least they kept him relevant by having him face off with other generals. It's nice when the good guys get along, but it's better when the bad guys don't. I also really liked Wrench, who wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty even though he was the tech guy.
I do think Dino Super Charge has the better villains though; Heckyl and Snide were a good pair, and Heckyl's eventual face turn was actually a nice surprise. The idea that he wasn't evil at all until the Dark Energem was well handled, and while his redemption arc came right at the last minute, it did feel complete and earned.
I also really liked Lord Arcanon and Singe; they ran the risk of being too little, too late, coming in with only like 8 episodes of a season left, but they had history with the other villains that made them relevant, and Arcanon's overblown sense of self-importance made him fun too.
Overall - 4.40
Hottest Ranger - Oh god, this one's far too hard. It's like a four-way tie between Tyler, Chase, Riley, and Koda, all for different reasons. Stick them in a blender and give me the perfect Ranger.
Notable Episodes:
When Logic Fails - A crystal maze-esque episode which shows off Riley's unique talents.
Wishing For A Hero - The Rangers make wishes that all go terribly, terribly wrong.
Love At First Fight - Mostly for Beauticruel's terrible accent.
Freaky Fightday - Body swap episode? Body swap episode.
Edge Of Extinction/End Of Extinction - World-wide Zord fights! Time travel! A black hole! A happy ending!
I'd also like to mention how good all four holiday specials were. They're all clip shows, but they have such good, fun set-ups that they're not a chore to watch like the holiday specials usually are. Trick Or Trial was especially good.
