Stepping Stones, Spencer Reid
This was a request, and it’s a bit different from what I usually write. The request included flashbacks, and I don’t write them in many of my fics, so I hope they don’t sound too bad.

It’s funny how one room in a house can change so much over the span of two years. What was once grey walls are now painted a light blue, and the area once covered with stacks of books now holds various stuffed animals and baby toys. The desk was probably the hardest to move, but the crib wasn’t much better. Not to mention the best change in the whole house was the new presence of a baby boy - mine and Spencer’s baby boy.
After my brother died, it felt like nothing could bring me happiness. Spencer tried and tried, but even his smiling face seemingly couldn’t bring me out of my funk. Although, his hard work did end up helping me, albeit slowly. Thankfully, Spencer understood where I was coming from, and he always assured me that it was okay when I felt bad about not sharing his happy moments with him.
It was only after Scratch’s death that I could feel the warmth that I hadn’t felt in such a long time. Of course, I was on morphine at the same time as I didn’t come out unscathed when it came to catching Scratch. He managed to get one bullet in me before falling to his death and making me fall back onto the roof of the building with a bullet lodged in my shoulder. I don’t remember much from those moments of terror, but I do remember Spencer’s face appearing above mine with nothing but fear written all over it. What would you do if your wife was bleeding out on a rooftop?
When I woke up in the hospital the next day, a lot of things ran through my head. First was the realization that Prentiss was alive and safe, and the second was that the man who killed my brother was now dead, to which I ended up sobbing in my hospital bed. Spencer, whom I hadn’t even noticed in the corner of the room, immediately rushed over and tried to make sure I was okay, and to his delight, I was. We were both alright after so long of a hell we had to face.
Steven’s funeral was the next step I had to take, and even though I didn’t like the idea of arriving at my older brother’s funeral with a cast and bruises adorning my face, I went. I wouldn’t say it felt good to say goodbye to him, but it was a relief to see him in a more peaceful manner than when I first saw him deceased. When that happened, it ended with me screaming and sobbing while Luke held me back from running to his body in the SUV. I didn’t know what else to do in that situation. I felt numb; it was as if I was losing my mind at the sight of Steven with a broken neck.
Fortunately, I got to see Monica there, and eventually, I got to talk to her as well. I felt the self-guilt gnawing away at my stomach, and even though I didn’t say anything that showed it, Monica knew. Instead of saying words she knew I wouldn’t believe, she pulled me close and held me as we both quietly wept. My sister-in-law and I always had a close relationship like that, and I couldn’t be more thankful.
~~~
“Your auntie Monica has always loved your mommy,” I whisper to the baby boy in my arms as he stares up at me with eyes to mirror his father’s own chocolate orbs. “She used to come over when she was dating your uncle and always spend a few minutes with me to help me feel counted,” I add, “When your daddy and I got married, she helped out a lot. She was mommy’s bridesmaid, and both she and your uncle made me and daddy feel so loved.”
~~~
Two months before Steven’s death was mine and Spencer’s wedding. In retrospect, I couldn’t be more thankful that we chose the date we did as my brother got to not only witness one of the happiest days of my life but he got to walk me down the aisle as well. Not to mention he got to hand me off to a man whom I not only loved, but a man that Stephen and Monica knew would treat me right. Spencer and I had been dating for two years, and we both knew that neither of us ever wanted to be with anybody else. In my heart, I knew I didn’t want to go through any more of life’s moments without him by my side permanently, and at the altar, Spencer confessed the same thing. We wanted everything together, the bad and the good.
~~~
“And so, that’s where you come into the picture, Henry Stephen Reid,” I murmur, smiling as the restless baby starts to close his eyes. As he’s gotten older and hit the six month mark, it’s easier to put him down for a nap, and I couldn’t be more thankful.
~~~
Barely a year had passed after Stephen’s death when I found out I was pregnant. Both Spencer and I were ecstatic, along with the rest of the BAU when we discovered the news. I don’t think anyone stopped smiling for the entire nine months I was pregnant. The person I had the hardest time telling my pregnancy to was my sister-in-law, Monica. I don’t know if it was because I didn’t want to take her away from mourning Stephen or if I was scared of how she would react. Although, I think a majority of my problem was the heartbreaking irony that presented itself to me in this situation: when life was taken away from me, it was given back in another way.
Spencer and I had been married for a year then, and in all honesty, the thought of pregnancy wasn’t a priority. It wasn’t something we were too concerned about - if it happened, it happened, but we would be happy. The only problem was that after a year without protection, we still had no baby to show. Sadly, we both realized the possibility that maybe we weren’t meant to be parents. Now that I think about it, it was kind of ridiculous that we even thought to give up after only a single year.
~~~
“Is he down for the afternoon?” Spencer asks as I walk out into the kitchen, baby-free. Well, kind of.
“Yes, he is,” I murmur, walking up next to Spencer at the counter where he flips through one of my cookbooks. “Did you find something for us to have for dinner?” I ask, looking up at his concentrated face. I could stare at his face all day, and not have a single worry.
Turning toward me with a smile, Spencer wraps his arms around me from behind and pulls me to him, kissing the side of my head. “Do you think the littlest one would like stuffed shells tonight?” He asks, one hand moving to caress my non-existent bump.
“Spence,” I say his name with a small laugh, reaching up to hold his face. Still my biggest advocate in life, Spencer smiles down at me, his happiness somehow connected to my own. “I’m only ten weeks along; I’m sure they’ll be fine,” I point out, Spencer’s hold on me never faltering. Despite all of the things we've been through together, the good or bad, we’re still there for each other and always will be.
Bring peace bring broken bonds (2)
Female lo'ak x ash navi + sully family and others
Tumblr media
A daughter had been sent off to another clan in mate ship that will bring peace, during a time of conflict between the clans of Pandora. There had been greedy, lies, and betrayed that had came with the promise of peace. A daughter that had been given away in marriage, had done it for her people and family, didn't know the string of betrayal and heartbreak she was face so quickly. She had been able to grow over the time away, even due she felt she was abandoned she had blossomed into a wonderful women and amazing navi.
Lani " ......."lani life had changed over the many years after she become mates with Amoyi and left the forest she once called home. During this time apart from her family and clan, she had been able get to know her new family and clan well. She had learned when she arrived at her new home, ookek was not the leader of the clan he is the second in command. The one who was in changer of everything is Amoyi mother Varrang. Varrang a strong women and mighty warrior as well. Lani also got to meet the rest of the family she had married into and the clan as well.
Lani “ even due sorrow came to my life happiness had came as well” when lani had arrived to her new home and clan, she had been given a new makeover. New clothes had given to her the symbol her acceptance into the clan, and her new rank in clan as well. She was also given new jewelry as well, over time she no longer wore that much of her clothes that represented her clan and the forest. It had taken her time to adapt the her new home, but it become her natural environment.
lani “ it has been many years since I arrived here, a land that was unknown to me but soon become my second home”
????? “ ma lani i’m home and I brought my mother and Ookek with me” lani soon looked up to see her mate walking into the home, with car rang and ookek.
lani “ welcome to our home”
Varrang “ it a honor to be here lani I enjoy your company”
lani “ thank you varrang”
ookek “ yes varrang is right being in your company better then, then your so called father and the failure of leaders”
Amoyi “ uncle please it not a good time to speak about them not after ….”
lani “ my husband it okay I have come to terms with my relationship with my family, many years have gone by and they missed a lot”lani had sent words to her family and friends, but never heard anything back from them. It had broken her their promise of always being there for her seemed to not come to terms, and that she was the only one keeping the promise going. Lani had soon been snapped out of her thoughts when cries had been heard in the home, she was going to follow the cries when someone stopped her.
amoyi " I will go you stay here and talk" amoyi had soon walked away leaving lani alone with her mother in law and ookek.
varrag " the clan has been blessed and you have made our family very proud as well, lani bring new life into the clan and life that seen as rare to us all"
amoyi " see everything is okay little ones your grandmother has come to see you and your uncle as well" amoyi soon came into the room holding to twin boys in his arms, last year lani had twins. She had know about twins from her father and the humans, but this was something rare among the other clans her having twins brought joy and pride to the clan and her new family.
Varrag " now let me hold on of my grandson"
amoyi " yes mother" amoyi had passed one of the boys to his mother who held the boy and smiled, varrag loves her family and will do anything for them, She had meet lani when she came here and took her in right away.
Varrag " they are perfect boy strong babies like all the other that have been born here and will be born in the future"
amoyi " yes they are mother"
ookek " lani how do you tell them apart"
lani " as I mother I have been able to find ways to tell them apart, and when they were younger I had enough time to bond with them and tell each one part.... Kenii is in amoyi arms he is much like his father and grandmother"
amoyi " hey"
Varrag " she is right my son you were like Kenii when you are just a baby"
amoyi " then is Neha who remind me of amyoi and my older brother neteyam, even due the boys look more ash navi they have some hints of myself and other forest navi traits"
amoyi " I love our sons and I wouldn't mind if they had been born looking like you or maybe anymore future kids we have"
ookek " already speaking about having more kids I see"
amoyi " we both want a big family and I'm ruler along side my mother, I will need a big family"
lani " yes but we will have a more kids when the twins are older my love"
amoyi " yes my love"
varrag " I thought your father and family will come when they heard news, that you will become a mother or after but they haven't come ... that an insult to you and the clan"
amoyi " lani had sent out word to them and my man had passed on the news, but it seems like they haven't come yet"
varrag " they have you join our clan and no one else has come to see you or sent word, that it horrible of them all'
lani " I don't know what has happened in the years but I know I was never my father and momideal daughter, but I thought they will still come see me but it seems like I was wrong ... I don't know about my siblings of grandmother and even my friends"
Varrag " well it their lost as they missed out on see the wonderful women you have become, and great addition to the clan bring honor to us and all the other clans near by"
lani " thank you" lani soon heard the cooing of her son Neha she had looked at the boy, as he is reaching out to her making her smile.
amoyi " it seems like you are love already by everyone here" lani soon took her son from her mates arms and held him close, her mate and his mother are right. She did have a family and clan that love her here, but she still has a special place for her family and old clan in her hearts.
amoyi " whatever happens my love I"m here to protect you and our child, my family and the clan"
lani " I know you will my husband I know you will"
later that night
amoyi " well the boys had finally fallen asleep"
lani " thank you for doing that for me"
amoyi " hey I love spending time with my sons and my beautiful mate"
lani " you are a big flirt are you"
amoyi " hey this stayed with this flirt and had a family with him"
lani " haha very funny you know it hard for me to understand at times, when a serious and fearsome navi like you has a soft spot"
amoyi " only for the ones I know and love" lani soon giggles as amyio and soon brought her closer to him and kissed her forehead.
lani " ......."
amoyi " I'm sorry that your family and clan haven't been around that much"
lani " it okay out of our control"
amoyi " I know but the sky demons are still causing trouble, and you think they will seek out help from us or come to see you to see if you are okay"
lani " I don't know what has happened I wishes I have answers, but I might never get any answers to all these questions"
amoyi " well if they do anything to wrong you and the kids I will make sure they pay"
lani " amoyi"
amoyi " I will be nice until I can't be nice" lani had nodded her head, her and amoyi had stood up a bit longer. Lani had went inside for a bit looked out of her new home, but she took time to look in the directions of her old home. She had changed over the years but even due she was the same young woman, she still longed for the forest and the ones she knew so dear. Lani soon made her way back to the clan, and her home unknown to her knowledge the past was going to come back after so long apart.
PROPAGANDA
Jason Todd
Jason is as someone else put it succinctly "a mass-murdering terrorist and tax-evader". He does evil, the story constantly condemns him as evil and sinful and thuggish and stupid and uneducated and overemotional. He does have a lower and more selective kill count than Luke Skywalker, John Wick, Disney Mulan, etc. So you got part of the fandom writing an annoying flood of fan fiction about him being a warm soft nice guy skipping through the daisies with his fam (hey have fun, guys). Then you got another side picking out the worst ex-canon comics for him (while they ignore the worst ex-canon comics for their own fave characters i.e. "my fave only did evil because of a mind-control potion, but Jason always chooses to be evil even though the story and the writer himself said he was crazy and broken and suffering from magic insanity")... and accuse him of being a cop (he is a cop-hating cop-killing terrorist murderer criminal thuggy thug thug constantly being hunted by law enforcement in a world bursting to the brim with actual copaganda while the heroes regularly cooperate with police—so many anti-fans are misusing the term copaganda because they hate this fictional character to the point they want to train people to be blind to actual copaganda). Jason is absolutely a villain—and he returned to his hometown when it was a battlefield with hundreds killed in the latest conflict, ruled over by a child-killing torture-enthusiast. War is always wrong and evil, and Jason was raised to be a soldier in that war—and when the promises of justice and safety never came true, he decided to seize power through murder. Jason is evil. He is inarguably a lesser evil than what usually plagues the town. Innocent people are alive because he got his hands dirty. He is such an asshole. People like him should not exist. He shot a 10-year-old in the chest, and nobody not even the 10-year-old cared the next day because it really wasn't a big deal. He was kidnapped by a billionaire with a taste for young boys, and it's literally not a big deal. His crimesagainst fashion are unforgivable tho.
Batman's adopted son and second Robin that got killed by the Joker and came bag to enact a revenge plan by becoming a Gotham drug lord. He had a duffel bag of 8 decapitated heads at some point and planted a bomb on the Batmobile and then got his throat slit by Batman to save the Joker. He stole his older adoptive brother's (first Robin) identity and blew up a high school but he forbade Gotham's drug rings from selling to children and actually became an anti-hero in Gotham and killed the people Batman wouldn't (rapists, drug lords, etc.). He attacked his little adoptive brother (third Robin) and beat him to a bloody pulp. He also slept with Batman's baby mama. He raised a fucked up Superman clone with kindness. He has lead teams of Outlaws on multiple occasions that love him. He's on good terms with many (not all) of Gotham's vigilantes.
Listen. I love the guy, I love him dearly, but I feel like people these days are trying to make him like completely justified in everything he did?? And like you can see where he’s coming from, sure, but my man did absolutely beat Tim Drake, a teen, half to death for the crime of being Robin. He’s morally gray! He had decapitated heads in duffle bags! Let my guy be morally gray please stop woobifying him
Jason Todd is regularly stripped of his autonomy in fandom to make him more palatable and “redeemable”. They attribute his legitimate trauma, annger, and pain driven actions to “pit madness” a side effect of the way he was resurrected. Not only that but so many people don’t even know what he actually does when he comes back, it’s like a shitty game of telephone where each person tells the next a slightly altered version of his return and at the end everyone thinks that Jason hates the kid who took up the Robin mantle after him and wants to kill him and that he is mad at Bruce for no reason and all Bruce needs to do is tell Jason that he is loved (despite Jason having a lot of evidence to the contrary) and everything will be all better. His values and beliefs and convictions are treated as invalid and his trauma is something he needs to just get over because it’s inconvenient and harmful to everyone else and doesn’t he know that everyone else was also traumatized by his death?
vigilante who kills people • traumatized as hell • has trouble differentiating between good deeds and selfishness • shot his little brother on the spine • tried to kill his other two brothers • operates under the belief that controlling evil is the only way to help innocents • has an immesurable love for the people of Gotham and really wants them to be happy and safe!! • please for the love of god fandom stop talking about him as if the bad things hes done are forgiveable AND as if the good things he's done don't matter
Gonna be honest even canon misinterprets him. There's no winning. All you need to know about DC universe is that multiple different writers have had a go at writing him and every time he is wildly different which is maybe why people interpret him very differently?? Canon interprets him in a he did everything wrong way a lot of times and fanon interprets him in a he did nothing wrong way because he is blorbo to many, when he is very much someone who did a lot of shit wrong but also had a lot going on, while thats still not an excuse for like, a lot of maiming and murder, and (usually) later in the timeline he is less trigger happy and has evened out from villain to morally grey, his whole "redemption" to being morally grey is usually up to fan interpretation whether or not they're chill with letting him keep murdering bad people or they say no murder in general, and whether or not bats is chill with the whole he keeps murdering people thing since he has a staunch no murder stance. Also!! a lot of people in fanon write in the whole pit insanity thing as a way to excuse a lot of the things he did while in his full on villain era, and like,,, i don't think that was canon??? like i straight up think the whole pit madness thing was made up but a lot of DC canon is wibbly wobbly already so its hard to say. hope this wasn't too word salady but i hope you understand that whenever you are consuming any piece of media, canon or fanon, with this man in it you have literally no idea what you are stumbling into you, you are playing fucking spin the wheel, which flavour of Jason Todd are we reading about today. I will say though, canon does objectively treat him like dogshit and only really brings him back every now and then as a punching bag for Batsy whenever they want to have edgy emo abusive dad bruce wayne because comic writers think found family is for chumps and so is being a good parent and actively resist it with every ounce of their soul :/ so I understand why fanon strays so far away, it's just that fanon also can't seem to agree on the degree of morally grey he is?? idk someone save Jason it's the worst custody battle of the century between canon and fanon.
Miguel O'Hara
he is dj internalized homophobia. he is so so sick in the head
Andrew Comforts Maya (Siblings in Law Imagine)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Age Rating: 12+
Chapters: One of One
Fandom: Station 19
Canon Episode: Season 7 Episode 7
AN: Hey guys so while I did like Beckett comforting Maya after she confronted her brother, I think it would have been more meaningful if it was Andrew instead. That way even when she cut ties with one, she still has a brother on her side. It’s one of the many things they robbed us of when they killed DeLuca.
One Shot Requests?: I’m willing to take one shots of Maya and Carina and more of Andrew and Maya being siblings.
Summary: After confronting her brother Maya Bishop goes to the hospital to look for Carina but runs into her brother-in-law Andrew DeLuca instead who helps her with her hormone shots and she tells him about Mason.
Words: 1168
After his lap chole Andrew walks down the hall heading to the ICU to check on Dorian when he spots his sister-in-law, Maya Bishop yelling at Jules Millin in the lobby who looks scared. He knows how scary Maya can get and with a batch of hormones in her system for egg retrieval it’s like being face to face with a lion after poking it with a stick and stealing it’s food. Andrew quickly heads over to defuse the situation.
“Look can you just find her please? Is that so freaking hard to do around here? Are you interns really as useless as my wife and sister-in-law make you out to be?”
Jules clears her throat, “Um Mrs. DeLuca I’m sorry but your wife isn’t responding to her calls so she must be in surgery. I’m just a messenger.”
Maya looks even more angry with a vein popping out of her forehead, “You know what the famous quote is on what happens to messengers don’t you?”
Andrew faces Maya with scared but pleasant smile, “Hey Maya why don’t we take a walk and you can tell me why it’s so urgent to see Carina while Millin gets back to work, what do you say?”
Maya inhales and exhales sharply, “Fine as long as somebody here is useful!” Andrew leads Maya down the hall away from Millin and cuts to the chase.
“I gotta be honest I didn’t think anybody except Amber could get Millin to pee her pants, but I guess you proved me wrong.”
“Where the hell is Carina?” Maya asks DeLuca impatiently.
“She’s at the mediation with the lady who’s suing her.” Maya groans, “Didn’t she tell you?”
Maya pinches the bridge of her nose, “She did I just had a long day and ran into someone who made me feel worse than I normally do since I started treatment. I forgot about the meeting and now I am here looking for my wife who’s not even here that is fan freaking tastic Bishop!” Maya yells out the last part causing a few workers to stare at them.
Andrew speaks in a calm voice, “Okay what’s up? What do you need?”
Maya groans, “I need to inject my HCG trigger shots in.” Maya checks her watch, “Ten minutes otherwise my eggs won’t be mature enough to be retrieved and my wife won’t get pregnant and will hate me for not giving her a baby she and I so desperately want. I’m trying to find Carina to inject them because only drug addicts and diabetics are used to injecting themselves and I realized this while I was driving home after my inspections so-”
“Okay, okay it’s fine it’ll be fine.” Andrew leads her into the attendings lounge, “We’ll just do the shots here, I’ll help you. It’ll be quick and easy, give me the stuff.” Maya hands him the med pouch that he sets on the table, “And as thanks you can name your future kid after me, Andrew works for a boy or my given name Andrea in case it’s a girl.” He walks over to the sink to wash his hands, “Lift up your shirt for me.”
Maya does so and waits for Andrew to finish scrubbing and putting nylon gloves on from the pantry. He walks over and rips open the alcohol rub wipe when Maya confesses to him in a small and broken voice, “I found my uh…my brother.”
Andrew keeps his shock to himself and sighs in sadness for Maya. He knows the story about how Maya recently saw her brother Mason as one of the hate group protestors during the pride parade. When Carina told him he was shocked someone could be so hateful towards his own sister. When he found out Carina was bisexual, he supported her, the only thing that bothered him was she constantly slept with his ex-girlfriends. But even then, he would never in a million years imagine yelling vicious words at her while she celebrated who she was.
He can see the impact it has on Maya as her anger shifts to that of despair causing him anguish seeing her in pain, “I’m sorry.”
Maya sniffles while Andrew sterilizes her lower abdomen for the shot, “He’s so hateful. I thought-I thought a little piece of him was still left but he’s gone. When I talked to him it wasn’t until later that I realized…I realized I was talking to our father. I didn’t know until today that he became him, just full of hate and anger.” Andrew looks at her in sympathy and turns to fill the injections from the vials, “Oh my god I cut him off. How could I do that?”
“Maya-”
Maya cries, “I’m a horrible person. I left him with our father and now he’s like this because of me.”
“You were kids.” Her brother-in-law states factly, “You two were kids trying to survive a father who made you feel you had to compete for his love. He did that to your brother you didn’t so don’t blame yourself if Mason chose a different path that pushed the people who love him away.” Maya sniffles still crying, “You did what you had to do, not just for you but for your baby. He would have bullied that little boy just like your dad bullied him, you did what you had to do to protect your family. Don’t ever feel bad about that or apologize for it. It’s like with me and my dad I knew there was nothing I could do to make him better so I let him walk away. And when I got sick…I vowed that I wouldn’t force my kids to do that with me. I take my meds and I go to therapy; I do that every day, so my daughter doesn’t get a fraction of what my dad did to me. I had to end the cycle and so did you. It’s horrible and you’ll feel awful but it’s better than opening yourself up to that pain you worked so hard to overcome. Even if you cut off one brother, you’ll still have me. I mean I think I’m a pretty good consolation prize.”
Maya looks up grateful for having him, “Thank you…and for the record you are nobody’s consolation prize.”
“Thanks.” Andrew taps the needle and leans down to Bishop’s stomach, “Ready?”
Maya is still lifting her shirt, “Yeah.” Andrew inserts the needle causing her to groan softly.
After pushing in the hormones, he pulls the shot back and stands back up, “For whatever it’s worth, you’re already a great mom.” Maya looks up at him with red stained eyes, “Come here I got you.” He gently pulls her in for a hug that she doesn’t fight instead she wraps her arms around him and cries against his shoulder letting her grief swim out of her as her brother rubs her back and lets her break down in his arms telling her over and over ‘It’s okay’.
okay as promised, all my thoughts that no one asked for on the mario kart bracket. i know i picked mario kart deluxe characters but i actually see this as a competition happening on the wii (greatest console in history)
Kino as Baby Daisy vs. Wilmon as Yoshi -- this is very simple. you cannot beat a teenage boy at a video game unless you are a teenage girl. kino, famously not a teenage girl, quits halfway through
Nemik as Waluigi vs. Brasso as Luigi -- mario kart is the one fun, mindless thing that nemik does in his life. but even it is done with all his brainpower. he navigates that track like a boss. brasso, with the best mario kart driver luigi (non-biased opinion of course), does well and easily finishes second but is not mad at all to lose to this kid
Partagaz as Tanooki Mario vs. Leida as Baby Luigi -- leida has logged many hours on the mario kart track because perrin makes her play against him all the time and she has become by far the best player in her tradwife-to-be club. partagaz simply spends the whole race wondering why his avatar is a fox
Jezzi as Lemmy vs. Taga as King Boo -- taga is a nerd, i believe this in my bones. thus he is all over this chance to win a gaming competition. jezzi has better things to care about but tries her hardest
Bix as Wendy vs. Taramyn as Peach -- taramyn is unironically glad to have drawn peach in the draft. he goes all out because this is the most fun he's had in literal years. bix is just as invested though and leads almost the whole race until a blue shell takes her out with two turns to go and taramyn seizes the opportunity
Time Grappler as Toad vs. Mosk as Rosalina -- time grappler is just quietly perfect at this. mosk spends the whole time wanting to police anyone who "violates traffic laws" by going off-course
Syril as Koopa Troopa vs. Cassian as Cat Peach -- cassian races his heart out trying to blow away the competition, not because the competition is syril (who?) but because he got stuck with cat peach. meanwhile syril sees this as the most important competition of his life and spends the whole race thinking he is blowing everyone (especially andor) away....only to be told when it ends that he was looking at the wrong side of the screen and has been racing backwards the whole time
Corv as Metal Mario vs. Blevin as Dry Bowser -- this is a frequent competition in the ISB break room. chairs have been broken. other officers steer clear of the hallway when these two go at it. they go back and forth all the time and are very evenly matched. blevin wins this time by a hair but gloats about it for weeks
Luthen as Dry Bones vs. Gorn as Larry -- both say they do not care. gorn means it. luthen ends up caring SO MUCH. he gets strategic and bitchy with the items and wins, but gorn does better than anyone expects and comes in second
Lonni as Pink Gold Peach vs. Perrin as Toadette -- a matchup of two very different dads. lonni is happy to get pink gold peach because he has his daughter on his lap and she likes it. he ends up giving his controller to her to chew on and doesn't finish the race. perrin is a stay-at-home dad and gamer husband who lives on monster energy drinks sipped from champagne flutes. he would've won easily even if lonni hadn't stopped halfway through
Timm as Lakitu vs. Vel as Bowser -- vel is a giant tomboy who grows up wanting to be a racer of any kind and this is the closest she will ever get to doing that. she murders timm who is really just a turd out there
Saw as Baby Rosalina vs. Eedy as Ludwig -- saw wants to quit halfway through because this is a waste of his time but he sees that the controller is too big for eedy's hands somehow and cruises to victory
Skeen as Bowser Jr. vs. Melshi as Baby Peach -- skeen insists they play on rainbow road. melshi agrees because he's an agreeable guy. skeen is just ahead of him for most of the race but it's very close. ultimately skeen can't handle the pressure and falls off the track at the last turn, leaving melshi a clear track to victory. skeen's remote ends up buried in the drywall
Kleya as Wario vs. Cinta as Shy Guy -- cinta has never cared about anything less in her life. kleya, despite protests to the contrary, cares so much. she is ruthless with the items and bullies her way to victory
Dedra as Daisy vs. Bee as Baby Mario -- dedra spends much of her time in the race overcorrecting on the turns because the controls are too touchy. ultimately it doesn't matter because bee's processor and battery are too old to help him win on such technology as the wii
Tay as Donkey Kong vs. Mon as Mario -- tay is very happy to be donkey kong but even happier that mon is mario because she is nervous and not very good at this but he tells her that mario has an advantage because it's his game. this gives her confidence enough to do well and even though he could beat her if he wanted to, he lets her have the much needed dub
Great news, everyone, I've got new God of War fanfic incoming! Of note: The original characters included in this fic are from my "memories of mother" series. Technically that series isn't Ragnarok compliant, but I love those little blorbos from my brain, so I'm going to include them here and just tweak any details about them/those stories that aren't fully canon-compliant. Also, the full fic is going to delve into Asgard's war crimes, so brace yourself for that. (And if you happen to stumble across this at random, it's a sequel to ANOTHER fic called "will you greet the daylight looming?" which is on tumblr here. For context and all.) AO3 link will be in a reblog, but you can read the full chapter below!
dreaming 'til you hit the truth | a god of war fanfic part one
cw: childbirth, mention of family loss and grief
.
fifteen years ago...
Guðrún couldn’t decide which part of the situation was more unbelievable.
That Laufey, her notoriously single-minded adoptive sister, had settled down with a man.
That she was somehow with child before Guðrún (though not by very much).
Or that the man she’d settled down with was not a man, but a god. A foreign god, from the sound of things, but a god nonetheless.
Guðrún could sense his presence behind her as she kept her eyes on Faye. She probably should have felt more threatened by him, but he was really no different than every other new father she’d encountered: anxious, unsure of what to do, and fretting. It was almost comical. Guðrún did her best to ignore him. “How do you feel?” she asked Faye gently.
Faye huffed an exhausted laugh. “Hurts.”
“But nothing feels wrong?”
“No. Just…hurts.” For a moment, Faye’s eyes flooded with tears, ones unrelated to the pain of labor. She didn’t have to say anything; she’d done her grieving early in the labor. Her mother should have been there, her mother and her blood-sisters and the older women of the community. She should have had so many people around her to help. All she had was a foreign god, and her few siblings by adoption or marriage who would be leaving her soon
As if she could sense Guðrún’s thoughts, Faye rested her head against her shoulder and spoke in a low voice: “Don’t feel guilty. You’re here for me now. That means everything.”
It didn’t feel like everything. “I’m sorry…”
Faye shook her head. “My place is here. Yours…” One of her hands shakily rested over Guðrún’s belly. “...you have to live. She has to live, too. Wherever that takes you, you live. Hear me?”
There was such fierceness in her eyes that for a second, Guðrún didn’t know how to respond. There may have been a god in this home, but in that moment, Faye felt like the most formidable one. The guardian of Jotunheim. The one who’d broken the wall of prophecy and stayed alive despite everything.
Her sister.
That spark in Faye’s eyes was suddenly replaced by confusion, excitement, fear. “Fárbauti?” she called.
The god was at her side in an instant. “What is it?” he asked.
“I think…no, he’s coming, he’s definitely coming…”
Guðrún’s training set her in motion. “All right, then, you’re almost there…you can do this, Faye. Not long now.”
 It felt like seconds and years until Guðrún was calling Fárbauti over to help her catch the baby. “All right, systur, one last push, there you go…he’s almost here…”
And then, there he was.
Just a small thing, small enough to fit in both his father’s hands. A little boy with his mother’s red hair and her eyes, once they opened. Guðrún wondered if he could sense the danger of the world he’d been born into. Maybe; maybe not.
But when he took his first deep breath and let out his first cries, Guðrún couldn’t help feeling like they were cries of defiance.
.
six months after ragnarök…
“You’ll wear a hole in the floor,” Hallveig said.
Guðrún stopped pacing and glared at her sister-in-law. “It’s not like her to be gone this long,” she pointed out.
“Laufey’s got a good head on her shoulders. A little delay doesn’t mean anything.” Hallveig’s voice was far too calm. “We haven’t seen any Aesir…”
“And the Aesir aren’t the only dangerous things in the world,” Guðrún snapped, though she knew why Hallveig had said it. She still flinched at the sound of thunder and the call of ravens. They all did. “Weren’t you almost kidnapped by a chicken house?”
“That was a misunderstanding. I told you, we sorted things out – “
The door suddenly opened. In burst Guðrún’s daughter, a whirlwind of chatter and excitement as always. “Mama, look!” she blurted, her dark hair breaking free of its braids and falling into her face. “Look at who I found!”
“Laufey Guðrúnsdottir, I…”
Guðrún’s rebuke died in her throat. Laufey was carrying a boy on her back. He had short red hair, tattered clothes, and the look of someone who had been travelling a long time. She recognized the make of his armor and weapons, the design of his tattoos.
More than anything, she recognized his eyes, big and blue and just like his mother’s.
Laufey set the boy down at the table. “Go on,” she said. “Tell her!”
Guðrún already knew, and from the look on her face, so did Hallveig. But hearing it was another thing entirely.
“I’m Loki,” said the boy. “Loki Laufeyson. And I’m here to take you home.”
well, since i’ve finished the arc (finally) it’s time for my ✨dressrosa wrap-up✨
fourth gear luffy was very cool!! also seeing devil fruit awakening powers in action (for the first time, i think?) really cool and opens up a lot of options for how fruit powers can be used in the future!
USOPP AWAKENING OBSERVATION HAKI!!! MY BOY (also, in knocking sugar out the second time, the method was very funny. it was also funny the first time but it was funnier the second time.) also god usopp...iconic
i am DELIGHTED by bartolomeo, he is such a lovable dipshit. also for new characters, issho is a pretty rad dude, especially compared to...most of the admirals we’ve seen so far. he has a legitimate sense of non-sociopathic justice and isn’t blind to the flaws o. is aware of the flaws of the world government and their overreach and corruption. also glad to see sabo and luffy reuniting
my bellamy woobification arc...this dude is just straight up having a bad time
CORA MY BELOVED...god, law’s flashback is one of the hardest-hitting flashbacks in the series so far, probably up there with brook’s and nami’s (robin’s is still the most devastating to me)
okay time for me to be a hater. i simply do not care for law very much outside of when he’s trying to be Badass McCoolGuy and being reminded that he lives in a cartoon world and has formed an alliance with the cartooniest guy in that world. there are way too many times in this arc where there’s a death fakeout, then it turns out he’s not dead, and it’s just like. come on, man. his powers as shown in the previous arc are already insanely broken to the point it feels like there’s little-to-no tension in a lot of the fights he’s involved in somehow.
i did not care for half the crew going off to zou partway through the arc and being offscreened entirely.
ughhhhhhhhh everything about rebecca’s writing kind of sucks ass! this has been talked about in excruciating detail before but she ultimately does nothing of substance and is forced to be rescued multiple times. despite supposedly being one of the greatest gladiators in dressrosa, she’s repeatedly put in situations where she cowers in a corner, sobbing for someone to save her. the resolution to her “fight” with diamante, with her big strong dad coming in and going “girls shouldn’t fight! you need to remain Pure and Pristine!!” would probably have come off as incredibly sexist no matter what, but if there had been more of a focus on rebecca being forced to fight despite not wanting to, and in her feeling guilt over hurting and defeating the other contestants, it could have felt slightly less insulting
does anyone like the tontattas
seriously, anyone
maybe i wouldn’t have minded them so much if not for the stupid introductory scene where they crawl into robin’s dress (speaking of women who get sidelined hard in this arc...hoo boy) and the consistent official translation phonetically writing their dialogue in cutesy baby talk but like. they do nothing for me. i do not care for them.
the same goes for, uh, basically all the gladiators? and also basically all the executives (except senor pink) ??  we spend a hell of a lot of time watching a bunch of dudes we’ve never met before this arc and have no emotional connection to fighting a bunch of other dudes we’ve never met before this arc, and honestly instead of introducing 50 new characters i would have preferred the offscreened strawhats get to fight instead.
because of the multiple plotlines, it feels like we jump around every 2-3 chapters to a different story, and as a result, it feels like not much progress is made in each line. i really hope other people who were reading this were super invested in all of the plots because otherwise you spend multiple chapters in a row waiting to get back to the shit you actually care about
overall i’d say the arc is...there are parts about it that work (everything that directly involves doflamingo, the doffy vs. luffy fight, issho) but unfortunately a lot that feels like it’s spinning our wheels waiting to finish up the main plot. i appreciate the dark parallels to alabasta and the vision of “here’s what would have happened if crocodile had won”, but i feel like alabasta handled it much more concisely, with characters i was more invested in, and allowed all the strawhats (and vivi) to be a key part of stopping the villain’s plan instead of having half of them leave halfway through the arc
Seventeen Years Late and Two Dollars Short - 1x01 "Pilot"
Alrightie, time to get started.
RECAP YO
Episode opens 22 years prior with Mary and Dean Winchester wishing baby Sam a good night. John joins them, and then they go to bed. Lights begin to flicker, and Mary wakes when she hears the baby monitor go off. She goes to check on Sam, thinking that the figure hovering over the crib is John. She ends up going downstairs because hey, lights still flickering, and realizes that John is sleeping in front of the TV. She flies back upstairs to Sam's room.
John wakes to her scream. He runs upstairs, but Sam's room is empty except for him. John notices blood dripping from the ceiling and looks up to see Mary bleeding out just before the room bursts into flames. He gets his sons out. Roll opening credits.
In the present (2005) Sam goes out with his hot girlfriend on Halloween. We're told that he's at Stanford, about to interview to go into law school. He has a difficult relationship with his family. That night, he wakes, catching a strange man walking around his apartment. Turns out it's his brother Dean. Their dad is missing, and Dean manages to convince Sam to come help him find their wayward parent.
In Jericho, California, we have a vignette of a woman in white seducing a young man into driving her home. Even though he was just talking to his girlfriend, he is more than happy to accept her invitation to stay the night. This ends badly when he rolls up to the delapidated house, gets freaked out, and tries to drive away. No dice, as the woman shows back up in his car and ends up brutally murdering him.
Sam and Dean catch up to their dad's last known location, and come upon the police investigating the boy's disappearance. They investigate, and eventually stumble upon their dad's abandoned motel room. They'd already started piecing things together, but it looks like their dad had confirmed that they were dealing with a Woman in White - a vengeful spirit intent on punishing unfaithful men after commiting filicide and suicide. (Good for her.)
Dean gets arrested since he over the course of the episode has already broken many laws including credit card fraud and impersonating law enforcement. Sam gets away, and goes to interview the woman's - Constance's - husband. Dean is interrogated over his father's journal. Sam calls in a bogus tip that gets the cops out of the way, and Dean escapes. On his way to the old house where Constance is buried, Sam gets taken hostage by the spirit. Sam refuses to be unfaithful to his girlfriend, Jess, but the spirit kisses him anyway so that she could try to kill him.
Dean shows up, shooting the ghost to stop her from hurting Sam. Sam, pissed off, drives the Impala into the house. While inside, Dean and Sam are trapped by the ghost, who is then in turned trapped by the also vengeful spirits of her murdered children.
Dean takes Sam back to his apartment, even though he wants him to come with him on the next leg of their journey to find their dad. Sam refuses, and Dean lets him go. When Sam gets back to his apartment, he lays on his bed, thinking Jess is in the shower. Blood drips on his face, and he looks up to find her stabbed and on the ceiling. The room bursts into flames, and Dean busts in and rescues Sam. Sam ends up going with Dean at the end of the episode.
THOUGHTS
So, I can see how this got to be a hit in the mid-Aughts. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are hot young men in their prime running around in a cool car. Not gonna lie, I love the car. I love the sound of the car. I'm aware that my robotfucker instincts are coming to the fore, but that's a hazard of being a long time Transformers fan.
I was kind of worried when I realized we'd see Mary Winchester's death straight off, since one of my sensitive areas is the young death of a parent. I have a lot of trauma regarding the sudden death of my father, and even though he's been gone for nine years . . . Disney movies can still set me off. Seeing a gif set of Littlefoot's mom dying makes me tear up. I make light of it, but I still haven't seen the entirety of the movie Onward.
However . . . it's ridiculous. If Mary's death had been played with any sort of actual pathos, I might have had trouble, but it was pure shock value. Technically speaking, I really liked the special effects, and the framing of the scene, but because I haven't spent any time with the character it didn't land very well. I know that in the function of the story, it really isn't supposed to inspire anything in me since it's basically just setting up the main plot, but not gonna lie, both Mary and Jess got fridged. The only reason I can see to include Mary's death scene was to signal to the audience that Jess was killed by the same being. That's it. As a storyteller, I like bookends and callbacks, but the fact that both women are killed purely to affect the men is a tired ass trope, and it was a tired ass trope back in the year of our Lord 2005. Double deductions for the fact that the deaths are melodramatic and over the top as hell.
I will say that I liked the Woman in White story line, and will give points to the fact that the end of the Monster of the Week arc was a nice twist. Having the ghost being caught by the spirits of her own children - the true innocents in her tale - was a nice touch. It was a bit of an abrupt ending though.
Character wise, I liked the fact that we get to sit awhile with the brothers. It's not all action, and we're allowed to get to know their quirks straight off the bat. Sam is studious and responsible with a pretty strong moral compass. He's not above lying, but his lies are all purposeful and he shows distaste for how Dean is able to pay for things. Left to his druthers, he's very much starting out as lawful good. Dean on the other hand, is a lecherous jackass. He hits on anything that has breasts, but didn't strike me as particularly selfish. When Sam insists that he can't go on at the end of the episode, Dean simply drives him back. Dean is obviously loyal to his family even if he gives no indications about his attitudes towards anyone else. I know that there are hidden depths we haven't hit yet for his character, but I'm also trying not to let fandom interpretations cloud my judgement too much. This is all based on behavior from the episode itself.
So, overall, I liked the characters. There's some shenanigans in the storywriting that make me give it the side eye, but I'm willing to see where this goes.
I mean, I know its going to Hell, but, enh.
*raises her hand* For the ask game, may I suggest Helaena Targaryen and "kintsukuroi // 金繕い (japanese, n.) - “to repair with gold”; the art of repairing pottery with gold or silver lacquer and understanding that the piece is more beautiful for having been broken" ? Either she or Naerys would be neat!
In the end, she and her daughter remain. Helaena remains wooden with shock when they crown her, half expecting this to be some sick jape, a trap.
But the cold reality is that there is no one left to lay the trap, at least not amongst her own blood. Rhaenyra and Daemon are dead. Their children are dead as well, save Daemon’s maiden daughters.
Aegon is dead. So too are the rest of her brothers. Her mother is dead. Her father’s death is what started this war. There is absolutely no one left but herself and Jaehaera.
Had there been a boy child left she is sure they would have made him king instead but all the sons of House Targaryen are dead and cremated, their ashes scattered to the winds.
And, as so many courtiers are now quick to remind her, she is a dragonrider. She is the only adult dragon rider left. Baela and Rhaena are girls of fifteen. By their age she was a mother, but times are different now.
And Baela’s dragon is dead; she may never fly again. Rhaena and Morning are under close guard; despite the girl’s gentle reputation there are fears Blacks might attempt to launch a new revolt against Helaena.
But Helaena still has the superior claim, at least by Andal law, and she has always considered herself more Andal than most of her siblings. She would have given anything to be born to some minor knight in the middle of nowhere.
Her crown is different; this is a king’s crown, not a queen’s. She chose the crown of Aenys, despite his bitter reputation. He was a peaceful man and she intends to be a peaceful queen. Those she wanted dead are dead. Most of them died violently. What else could she wish for?
My sons, she thinks, and behind the blank mask her eyes swim with tears, but she is all cried out. She is no longer capable of expressing her grief, like the famous Alyssa Arryn.
Jaehaera seems content, at least, or is a bit calmer than usual. Occasionally she says a few words here and there, short sentences like “Mama, I’m hungry.” or “Can I see Morghul?”
The maesters and septas still fret and tell Helaena that her daughter behaves more like a child of four or five than a princess of eight years, but Helaena is not concerned.
Jaehaera was slow to walk, but eventually she did. She was slow to talk, but eventually she did.
They say she is cold and queer but they don’t know Jaehaera’s fire, her rage, how she can howl to shake the room when angered. That relieves Helaena. She would rather her daughter furious and grieving than reduced to a porcelain, placid doll.
There is tremendous pressure for her to marry again. The most likely choice, many insist, is young Alyn Velaryon, the legitimized heir of the fast fading Corlys. But Helaena haa no interest in wedding again, and not to a boy six years her junior.
Jaehaera will be her heir, she is determined of that, at least. She will need a kind, clever husband who trusts and respects his wife, who would never betray her with whores or deceit.
She used to think Jaehaera might wed her cousin Viserys, before the war, but Aegon and her mother were convinced Jaehaerys and Jaehaera must continue the tradition and marry as soon as they were of age.
And Viserys was lost at sea, besides, the poor boy. Even after they butchered her boy, she never wanted Rhaenyra and Daemon to lose another child. She just wanted to tear them apart, piece by bloody piece.
The wooden feeling fades, as the months pass. It is not all bad. There are quiet, peaceful moments in between the ruckus of court and council.
And even when she wishes a thousand times over it was her who had died instead of her baby boys, that would leave Jaehaera all alone. And she cannot stand the thought of that, either.
So for now, she watches the winter sunlight dapple shadows on the walls, and waits.
Hi, love your metas and your fic. I think you mentioned somwhere that at the end of BD Aro was trying to prevent the fight. What were his motives? According to Edward, the Volturi are cowards, but I didn't get this feeling. Caius was begging for a battle, the guard vocally proclaimed willingness to die for the cause... hell, Jane had to be restrained from running to Bella and punching her in the throat. And I find it unlikely that their leader is less brave than them. Explain Aro's brain pls
Thank you so much! That’s really nice of you to say. And sorry for the late answer.
And explain Aro’s brain, whew. That is a very big question with a very long answer and this post will be a manifesto by the time I’m done. But you wanted Aro’s brain explained so manifesto it is.
So, before we go anywhere I have to make the distinction between Aro of the books and Aro of the movies. Those two are different people.
Starting with appearance, because casting does a lot for me and if a big deviation is made it better be like Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter, which is to say it better fit the character. Also, disclaimer, I think most of Twilight was miscast, and especially the Volturi. I’m forever dying at Caius looking like Lucius Malfoy. However, this is an Aro post, so we’re highlighting Aro.
Aro of the books is a twenty-something Greek with skin that has petrified and eyes covered in a milky sort of film, which totals to him looking perfect, as all vampires do, yet frail. When he walks it looks like he’s gliding. This is an otherworldly, ancient, inhuman being. He’s energetic and excitable, yes, but if anything that should add to how very other he is. Casting Michael Sheen is a clear signal that the movies were going in a completely different direction with Aro. Sheen is a great actor who played what he was given perfectly, but what he was given was a very different character.
In New Moon the book, Aro first rejects Edward request because this is Carlisle’s gifted son, and more, this is not what the Volturi do. They are not hitmen. It’s just a big no all around.
Bella enters, and the Aro she meets is a very polite and gracious man who’s delighted to see the human still alive, and pleased Carlisle’s son won’t be suicidal anymore. However, Edward fully intended to step into the sunlight in the middle of Volterra, specifically to provoke the Volturi, and he has broken the law with Bella. Further, Edward makes it clear that he fully intends to walk out of Volterra with his human still human, and that she’ll die of old age if he gets his way. Edward’s contempt of the law could not be more clear. However, Alice shows Aro that Bella’s fate is sealed, she turns or she dies. The law will be upheld. Aro is glad to hear it, and lets the Cullens all go home.
All in all, it’s a very tense occasion where Edward has put Aro in a difficult position, because he’s trying to force him to kill his best friend’s son, and Aro goes “YES THANK GOD” when Alice finally gives him an out.
New Moon of the movies was not this. Starting with the flashback (because I’m being thorough), Aro executes a lowly criminal himself.  I object to that, I think that’s a menial task and Aro doing it himself made the Volturi look less regal, not more. Cut to the present day, Aro rejects Edward’s request because he doesn’t want to waste his gift. We get the whole meeting with Bella, and Aro… well I don’t know why he does any of the things he does. This guy never mentions his friendship to Carlisle, tries to kill our plucky heroes three times in the space of one minute (one, gives Felix the order to kill Bella, stopped by Edward. Two, moves to decapitate Edward, stopped by Bella. Three, he’s about to eat Bella, stopped by Alice), and when he lets them go it feels terribly convenient.
This was a guy written to be the villain of the series, and it showed.
Cut to Breaking Dawn part I’s ending scene, and while I love the song choice for the scene, and fully agree that Aro considers misspelling Carlisle’s name to be a capital offense, the scene itself… we are presented with a villainous, power-hungry megalomaniac who’s just waiting to strike against the Cullens.
We then get Breaking Dawn part II, and I haven’t seen that movie in years but I remember the fight scene well enough. Aro kills Carlisle with the biggest grin on his face, and gives the go-ahead to his Volturi to kill the surviving Cullens and their witnesses.
Contrast that with canon, where Aro’s first words to Carlisle are «Nothing would make me happier than preserving your life today». Now, he’s making it very clear that this meeting will most likely end with Carlisle’s death, but he’s not happy about it. He’s certainly not going to kill him with a smile on his face and laughter in his heart.
The movies needed a hammy villain, and that’s what Michael Sheen played. It is not who Aro is, at all. And he’s not the only character this happened to, but again, this is an Aro post so I’m not going to start raging like Don Corleone about what they did to my boys.
So, with the movies firmly expelled from the post, let’s look at the Twilight series from Aro’s point of view.
Or, rather, we’ll have to start earlier because Aro’s decisions throughout the series are pretty clearly motivated by Carlisle. And that means considering, “why is Carlisle so important, anyway?”
Consider these things: one, Aro is gifted with the power of knowing every single thought a person has ever had. He knows your soul. Two, Aro is the leader of the supernatural world, he has been for over a thousand years.
How many friends does a person with that power and in that position have?
Three, who does Aro even come into contact with?
Starting with number three, for Aro it’s going to be 1) criminals, 2) Volturi guard hopefuls, 3) Weirdos like Laurent who are wasting Aro’s time.
(“But what about the guard!” Well, while we observe close interpersonal relationships between Aro and Jane, and Aro and Renata, and one can assume Corin to be close to the wives, the distinction between Volturi coven and Volturi guard remains. The guards are servants, in some cases beloved servants, but servants nonetheless. It would be inappropriate and weird for Aro to start slumming it with Demetri and Felix)
So, Aro doesn’t get out much, which brings us to point two. The people he does meet, and who are willing to entertain a friendship with the Volturi leader, are going to be people who want something. And that might work for some rulers, Louis XIV built Versailles specifically to make his subjects do this for him, but he had something to gain politically from that. Aro does not, his power is supreme without a need to tolerate brown nosers. More, with his own and Marcus’ gifts, he’ll know right away that he’s being used for power. He would get nothing out of it.
Finally point one, Aro’s gift. Say that we have a vampire who’s not a weirdo and who thinks Aro’s a cool dude. Well, the question now is, who would ever want a person in their life who knows all there is to know about them? I wouldn't want anybody to know every thought I've ever had, I certainly would never seek out a person to know me that deeply when I could just go find normal people to be friends with instead. Not to mention how incredibly unequal such a friendship would be.
In short, I don’t think Aro has any friends.
Enter Carlisle a very amiable person who cherishes Aro for his personality, and doesn’t mind having his mind read. Aro just found a unicorn. Carlisle on his end likes Aro so much that he lives with him for decades. Even if you want to read their relationship as platonic, that’s still a very strong friendship.
Point being that Carlisle is unbelievably precious to Aro, and so very unique. Aro has lived for over three millennia, and never met anyone like this before. There won’t be another Carlisle.
This in turn makes him willing to stretch as far as he can to preserve that friendship and, as the plot thickens, keep Carlisle alive.
Fast forwards to 2006, and Aro is sitting in Volterra minding his own business when Carlisle’s son walks into town demanding his own execution. He has not committed any crimes. Not only is assisted suicide not something the Volturi even do, but this would ruin Aro’s friendship with Carlisle. Even if Carlisle was miraculously understanding of Aro killing his son (which I can’t imagine he would be), this would never leave the air between them. Carlisle could never be around him again after something like that.
So, Aro turns down Edward’s request. “Stupid Volturi man ruining my dramatic suicide, I’ll show him who’s boss!” Edward replies, and runs shirtless into the sunlight. I’m sure Aro was just dying, you had “The Sound of Silence” playing as he stared into nothingness because how is this happening to him. A whiplash of an hour later, Bella is alive again, Aro is happy, we can be done with this now, right? Right?!
No, Edward says, we cannot be done with this. He’s still refusing to turn Bella.
And so we get that whole New Moon exchange where Aro very tellingly shoves the part where Edward WALKED INTO THE SUNLIGHT IN VOLTERRA under the carpet and out of the conversation (for comparison: Irina is executed for false testimony and Bree for breaking a law she didn’t know existed), and he even allows Bella to leave human when he could easily have bitten her himself to keep the Cullens honest. This guy went out of his way to be lenient and show the Cullens good faith.
And then a few months later Irina walks into Volterra, bearing memories of what is unmistakably a Cullen immortal child.
Aro may care for Carlisle, but this is the guy who killed his baby sister so he’d still have Marcus’ gift. He will bend far, very far, for those he cares about, but he will not break. It’s duty above love, Volturi above Aro’s personal preferences. An immortal child is not an offense that can be tolerated, and so it’ll be Didyme 2: Aro Kills Someone He Loves Boogaloo.
By now I think it should be quite clear why I think Aro was trying to prevent the fight. Battle would have meant Carlisle’s certain death.
(And that’s even assuming the Volturi won the fight. With Bella there, there was a chance the Volturi wouldn’t prevail. But even before Bella started showing off, Aro was very much hoping this wouldn’t be another Didyme situation.)
“Hello?” Five called out as he walked closer to where the heaps of his findings had fallen down. The dust cloud was making it difficult to see but as soon as it settled, he sighed.
‘Of course.’ Why did he even expect to find anyone?
 But then another pile fell down and he knew it couldn’t have been a coincidence. He ran over the coincidence fallen debris to find you hiding behind it, looking dehydrated and in tears.
His eyes widened when they landed on the burns on your body, finding it amazing that you even managed to survive them.
But compared to the others, you got off easy.
“Hello?”
The whole while you had been staring at him but it was only when he spoke it felt like you were actually looking at him.
Immediately, you got to your feet, tears spilling onto your cheeks as you threw your arms around him. He instinctively caught your form as it collided with his, holding you close as you buried your head into his neck, sobbing.
“I’m so glad you found me.”
****
Allison noticed the way Five looked longingly across the street. At first, she thought he was just staring lovingly at the cafe because he needed a shot of espresso but she quickly noticed that his eyes were locked on the tables outside the little coffee shop.
In a table right underneath the shade of a parasol, sat you alongside your older sister, just enjoying a drink and chatting very animatedly. She looked between the two of you a couple of times, wondering which one of you Five was staring at but ultimately deciding that it wasn’t important.
“Five?”
“Hmm?” He answered distractedly, not shifting his gaze to his sister and continuing to watch you. Seeing you smile so brightly had a small smile coming to his face but no matter who saw it there was a touch of despair and sadness behind it.
“Do you know her?”
“Not....yet.”
She turned back to the table, watching you drink whatever you had in your cup and wondered what Five meant by that. Were you someone who survived the Apocalypse?
“Yes.”
“Oh, I said that out loud?”
“She’s the sole survivor of the Apocalypse.”
It was as though you could hear them talking about you even though they had the distance of a busy road between the two of you, but you looked up and locked eyes with him, holding your gaze curiously.
He continued to look at you with an unreadable emotion and time slowed down. The noises around Five slowly faded into cotton and the people faded into wisps of sweet-scented smoke.
And then suddenly like as if someone crashed through a window, he heard a glass smash and the trance was broken. You turned back to your sister, only sparing small glances back at him to see if this mysterious stranger was still watching you.
“Five? You okay, buddy?”
He sighed, now knowing that you really couldn’t recognize him and so he turned his back to you, disappointed, to meet his sibling’s concerned eyes.
“I’m not sure.”
****
You cuddled closer to five, watching the fire flicker and trying to stop shivering. He sighed exasperatedly and you knew he was angry with you but you really couldn’t care less about how he felt while your teeth chattered and you shook like a chihuahua.
“I know you’re upset with me because I made us stop but it’s not like we have a deadline or something. It’s just the two of us, we can do things as slowly as we want to.” You told him, trying to relax but something in the back of your mind wasn’t settling right.
You hated being alone with him. You hated being the only 2 people on the planet. Your heart yearned for something else.
“Dammit, (Y/N), we can’t just sit around and do nothing!” He snapped, throwing the last piece of kindling into the fire and a few of the embers jumped out.
“Why not! It’s not like we have anything to live for here anyway! We should just end it now!” You shouted in his face, feeling a wave of tears grow. You missed your normal life, you missed your family, your parents and people.
You missed it all.
“I won’t die like this! I will find a way to stop the Apocalypse even if it kills me! I will fight for it!” It seemed like he was trying to convince himself more than you but all you felt was a weight on your heart and you broke down into tears, hiding your face from Five who immediately felt guilty.
“I can’t fight anymore, Five. There’s nothing waiting for us at the end of the line, I can’t do this anymore, Five, I can’t.” You sobbed.
He pulled you into his arms and you cried into his chest while he rubbed gentle strokes up and down your back while you choked over your own breath. He felt his own tears prick in the corner of his eyes.
“We’ll change it all, there has to be something, (Y/N), there just has to.”
****
“Five are you okay?” Came a concerned voice from one of his brothers but the younger boy (physically) couldn’t tell which one it was. He was far too lost in his own thoughts.
“Five?” Allison called out again, shaking her little brother’s (again, physically) shoulder and he snapped out of his trance, only realizing then he had overfilled his cup of coffee and spilled it everywhere.
“Oh.” He muttered quietly before getting a rag to clean it up.
Above his head, Allison and Klaus shared a concerned look and had a mental conversation about whether they should ask Five what was bothering him. It was likely he would just talk about equations and tell them they didn’t have the capacity to understand it.
But this seemed different to his usual ‘I’m superior than you and incredibly stressed about this Apocalypse’ silence. So, against their better judgement they decided to ask Five about it.
“Five is everything okay? You’ve been acting weird ever since the coffee shop.”
“Oh, coffee shop? What happened at the coffee shop? Was there another gun fight?” Asked Klaus excitedly and Allison spared him an eye-roll before sitting down.
“No, he saw a girl and well, he did that.” She explained, pointing to Five where he stood just holding a rag in his hands and not even bothering to wipe up the mess he made.
“Oh, well I can fix that no problem.”  Klaus said, sliding off the table and onto one of the chairs, “You see, baby brother, when a boy comes to the age of puberty—”
“Shut up!” Ben snapped from behind him and Allison slapped the back of his head but Klaus clearly saw the smile on her face before she glared at him.
“Five seriously, what’s wrong? Who was that girl?”
“She—” His voice cracked a little and he cleared his throat, “She’s nobody.”
“Not yet.” She pressed and he sighed before abandoning the rag and sitting in front of them. The older siblings immediately noticed the way he was playing with his tie, fidgeting in a way that was very unlike him.
“You said she survived the Apocalypse. So, the two of you obviously met.”
“Yeah, we did.” He spoke softly, still fidgeting with his collar and not meeting their eyes.
“And I’m assuming she’s important to you somehow?”
He sighed, leaving his collar and from his palm fell out the pendant of the necklace hung around his neck. Although from a closer look, it was a pendant as much as a—
The three of them gasped, “Five, she is not.”
He nodded sadly, hand going back to the wedding band strung on a chain around his neck.
****
“Do you think it’s legal?”
“We’re pretty much the only people here so I’m assuming it is.”
“Don’t we need witnesses or something?”
“That’s a stupid old law, made my stupid old folks that aren’t alive anymore.” He said, smiling gently as he wrapped his arms around your waist. You gave him a teasing smile, reaching up to brush a few strands of hair out of his face.
You couldn’t help the giggles when he reached down to kiss you gently. It was infectious apparently because Five couldn’t stop the smile from growing on his face either as he leaned closer, making your back curve.
“I like the way you think, Mr. Hargreeves.”
“I like the way you kiss, Mrs. Hargreeves.”
You chortled and burst into laughter as did he. It was one of the happiest moments since you both found each other and moments like these were as rare as they came, when the two of you were just laughing in each other’s arms like carefree people.
Of course, you couldn’t have a big fancy wedding with your family and go for a fancy honeymoon, but this wedding gave you something that you had wanted ever since the Apocalypse.
A family.
****
Allison, Klaus and Ben all noticed the way that Five smiled when he thought about you. They noticed the gentleness in his voice and how wistful it became all of a sudden as he told them about you.
Allison grinned at him, feeling incredibly relieved that her brother had somebody to hold him while he had suffered through the apocalypse. Hearing the story of how he survived so many years all alone really broke her heart.
She always knew that she had a rough childhood without the love of a real father, but hearing Five’s story made her feel like she had it easy. At least she had civilization around her.
But even with the relief she felt it was ridiculously incredulous that her brother who couldn’t even drive legally yet was legally married. It was too much to even process and a part of her is reminded of when her daughter told her that she married Elmo.
But the longer she watched Five the more convinced she grew. He actually married you and lived a long life by your side before he came here to stop the Apocalypse.
“Wait...” She spoke up, realization hitting her, “Five, if the two of you met because of the Apocalypse, if you stop it...” She stopped herself from saying the rest, seeing his face fall. Klaus gasped softly from beside them, understanding what Allison was trying to say.
It seemed like Five was trying to gather himself and both siblings say the way he swallowed painfully and the way his mouth quivered for just a second.
“I know.”
****
“I want you to do this, Five.” You told your husband, holding onto him tighter and burying your face into his neck and trying to hide your tears from him.
His arms looped around your waist and he pressed kisses to your shoulder, cradling your head gently. You heard his breath stutter by your ear and tightened your hold on him.
“I won’t leave you.” He said firmly and you sighed but didn’t move from his hold. He was firm on that decision since he married you, giving up on his search to find the correct equation, promising that he wouldn’t abandon you.
But you knew what lied in his heart. His love for his siblings, the guilt for not doing anything to save them and him spending hours awake while you were asleep just wondering what it would have been like had he done something.
“You’ll never forgive yourself if you don’t do this.” You murmured and his body shook a little from trying to hold in his sobs.
“I can’t leave you.”
“It’s okay.” You whispered, pulling away to cup his cheeks and you wiped a few of his stray tears away. You knew it must have been tearing him up inside if he was crying and it hurt but you also knew that he needed to hear this.
“It’s okay, I’m happy that we had our time together. I’m so unbelievably happy to have met you, Five, but I know that this is something you need to do.” You told him earnestly, still wiping tears from his cheeks.
“I love you.” He whispered so gently because he was sure his voice would crack.
“I love you too.” The tears running down your cheeks was in contrast to the sad smile on your face as you pulled him in for a hug.
It was after that he began his search to find the right equation again and it was admirable to see him work so hard but also heart-breaking because you knew when he would find the right one the two of you would be separated.
But still you encouraged him and supported him, knowing that in another world, the two of you could have possibly been happier had the Apocalypse not taken place.
It hurt, but at the same time, you wanted it to happen, which broke your heart even more.
And somewhere deep down you hoped that you would meet Five in another life and love him again.
You really hoped.
****
You sat quietly in the corner of the booth with earphones plugged in and reading a book with your favourite drink sitting on the table in front of you. You were so immersed in the book that you didn’t hear the boy in front of you until he tapped on the table politely.
Pulling out an earphone, you looked up to see a boy about your age with a charming smile and a cup of coffee in his hands.
“Hi, do you mind if I sit here?”
“Of course not.” You smiled, moving your bag off the table so he could sit comfortably.
“I’m Five.” He said, holding his hand out for you to shake and you nodded.
“That’s a pretty unusual name, I’m (Y/N).”
He smiled in a mysterious yet adorable way and you couldn’t help but feel that there was a reason he sat down. One you would find out extremely later but for now it was enticing and curious which attracted you to him even more.
“Nice to meet you.”
‘Again.’
Bakugou gets roped into spending the weekend with Todoroki and his family, pretending to be a loving boyfriend. There's no way this can result in chaos. After all, Bakugou has a tight lid on his crush. To nobody's surprise, that control wavers the longer the con goes on.
Bakugou remembers fondly the day Todoroki Shouto asked him to become his boyfriend. It happened as normal as anyone would expect it to be: a hang out between friends that led to a love confession.
Now, in front of Todoroki Rei's house, he wondered how in the hell he had forgotten how not normal his boyfriend's family (and even Shouto himself) was. Maybe he'd have thought twice before accepting his feelings, or at the very least, this family get together to 'celebrate their relationship', which translated to judge the baby of the family's partner.
And no, he was not scared. At all.
“You haven’t left this house in a week,” Bakugou says. “And I’d put money on you not leaving this exact spot.”
“I don’t have to go anywhere,” Shouto says, and it should be obstinate, but instead, it sounds to his ears like i don’t have anywhere else to go.
Metamorphosis by stillalosturl
(G, 2883, 1/1)
Fuyumi closes the envelope as she hands back the letters to her mother, “Shouto seems so happy, huh? Bakugou has been such a good influence.”
Rei lets out a breathy laugh, “He is, isn’t he?”
Fuyumi sighs wistfully, "Do you think Shouto realizes this? Mom, I don't want him to... you know?”
“Give him time, Fuyumi,” Rei simply looks at the letters with a fond smile, “Shouto just needs time.”
Whether anyone likes it or not, time always pushes for change: may it be the philosophy of life, the landscape of nature, or a person. The Todoroki family watches Shouto's inevitable metamorphosis as the seasons change.
Note
GRRM really created so many parallels and foreshadow using the DoD characters that honestly we could just figure the asoiaf ending by analyzing it. My favorite is the Aegon III-D@ny parallels, the fact that one of his closest allies was a face-scarred Master of coin Lannister who ended as Hand to Bran' parallel character just make it so obvious its funny.
Oh my god I didn’t even realise Tyland Lannister was initially on the greens’ side! I’m not super fond of Tyrion ending up as Hand, but you’re right that it’s so obviously meant to reference him. There’s so many parallels that it’s a little crazy. I don’t want to say that the second Dance will end exactly as the first did, it’d be a little too neat if history repeated entirely, but you can see so many echoes of it even in the show’s bastardised ending.
“The broken, shattered realm suffered for a while yet, but the Dance of the Dragons was done. Now what awaited the realm was the False Dawn, the Hour of the Wolf, the rule of the regents, and the Broken King.”
(TWOIAF, Aegon II)
I’m not sure what the False Dawn is going to parallel to, it refers to the period of time after Aegon II’s death but before Lord Stark got to King’s Landing, when people thought that peace had finally come. It kind of brings to mind the War for the Dawn, though personally I think that the threat of the Others will be resolved before the Dance is over. The Hour of the Wolf is obviously about House Stark’s rise back to power, and the Broken King is Bran - though if he actually becomes known as Bran the Broken I might end up committing violence ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
The parts about Lord Corlys Velaryon are why I’m so hopeful that Jon’s book ending will be completely different from the show’s. He’s arrested for Aegon II’s death by Cregan Stark, even though Cregan had previously declared for Rhaenyra, because as TWOIAF puts it, “to kill a cruel and unjust king in lawful battle was one thing. But foul murder, and the use of poison, was a betrayal against the very gods who had anointed him.”
Corlys didn’t deny his guilt, and expressed no regret. “What I did, I did for the good of the realm. I would do the same again. The madness had to end.”
Cregan Stark declared him to be guilty of murder, regicide, and high treason, and he was sentenced to execution. But many spoke in his defence, even people who had fought against him in the Dance. Baela and Rhaena Targaryen, Corlys’ granddaughters and Aegon III’s half-sisters, convinced Aegon to issue an edict pardoning Lord Velaryon, which Alysanne Blackwood then convinced Cregan to let stand. Lord Velaryon was pardoned and even restored to his offices and honours, made one of the king’s regents and given a place on the small council.
Corlys’ words definitely could be Jon’s as well, a much more in-character declaration post-D@ny’s death than the drivel GoT tried to feed us. I was worried for a bit that this would be how Tyrion is let off scot-free, but Baela and Rhaena, who were vital to his release, are such obvious Arya and Sansa stand-ins, and they’re certainly not going to expend any effort in helping Tyrion. So Corlys’ circumstances more likely lays the groundwork for how Jon will be freed and remain in political power, while Tyland frankly inexplicably becoming Aegon III’s Hand after he was in favour of brutally killing him parallels Tyrion managing to fail up, as a way of reconciling the old regime with the new one.
This makes Tyrion becoming Hand more palatable IMO. Either Jon and Tyrion both should have been punished or neither should have been punished, not the travesty where Tyrion gets everything he’s ever wanted while Jon is exiled to a Watch with no purpose and a Wall that’s already half-collapsed, so what exactly can it protect against? I suppose they were afraid of seemingly rewarding Jon for killing d@ny, especially if pol!Jon had been revealed, but most people noticed how nonsensical his ending was, and it just led to ‘Bloodraven/Bran is the real villain’ takes anyway.
(Side note: Asha/Yara basically still being loyal to D at the end annoys me so much, and made no sense. Jon did more to help save her by giving Theon that pep talk than D@ny did. Maybe it was a leftover from her taking Victarion’s role in the story, but in no reasonable world is anyone going to listen to the Ironborn who brought the Fire threat over in the first place.)
Of course Tyland Lannister isn’t actually Hand for long, given that he dies barely two years later from Winter Fever, feared and hated, alone except for a maester and King Aegon. It might be an indication that Tyrion will face a similar fate, that he’ll die after he’s seemingly won, exactly what he threatened Cersei with:
“A day will come when you think yourself safe and happy, and suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you'll know the debt is paid."
(ACOK, Tyrion XII)
So that I can stop talking about Tyrion, here’s some facts about Rhaena and Baela that are obviously meant to reference Sansa and Arya, so much so that it feels a little bit like GRRM is winking and going “See what I did there? Huh? Huh? Did you see??”:
- their descriptions: “Rhaena was slender and graceful; Baela was lean and quick; Rhaena loved to dance; Baela lived to ride...” + “Baela was wild and willful”, “more boyish than ladylike”, and kept her hair cropped short as a boy’s
- Rhaena spent most of the Dance in the Vale, where she lived in relative comfort as the ward of Lady Jeyne Arryn. Baela was a dragonrider and so moved between Dragonstone and Driftmark, but was captured on Dragonstone when Aegon II descended upon it
- Rhaena was favoured to be queen after her brother, considered more qualified than her wild sister
- Baela liked to spend time with “unsuitable companions” she would bring to the Red Keep - including a comely juggler, a blacksmith’s apprentice whose muscles she admired (!!!), a legless beggar, a pair of twin girls from a brothel, an entire troupe of mummers once
- After her brother’s regents tried to marry her to a lord 40 years older than her, Baela escaped the Red Keep by climbing out of a window, trading clothes with a washerwoman, then walking right out of the front gate. She ran away to Driftmark and married her supposed cousin (though more likely he was her half-uncle), the legitimised bastard Alyn Velaryon, which might have had me worried about j0nrya if Alyn weren’t best known for being a daring sailor who went on many voyages, including sailing the Sunset Sea, until he was finally lost at sea during Aegon IV’s reign. Alyn’s mother was also called Mouse, for being “small, quick, and always underfoot.”
- another fun fact about Alyn: he’s a bad haggler, and had to agree to a high ransom and many concessions in order to get Prince Viserys returned to Westeros. This automatically disqualifies him as a Jon stand-in, because as we all know, Jon Snow can haggle like the best of fishwives.
- My absolutely favourite detail that has my jonsa heart singing - Rhaena was more dutiful than her sister and would have married a man that the king and council chose, saying that as long as he was “kind and gentle and noble, I know that I shall love him.” She was able to marry her first choice, whom the regents didn’t immediately approve of but that they ultimately accepted  - Ser Corwyn Corbray, the brother of the Lord Protector of the Realm, a second son (!) whose late father had gifted him the Valyrian steel sword Lady Forlorn (!!!)
And as a treat for @istumpysk, some similarities between Rickon and Viserys II!
- the youngest child of their family
- separated from their older brother after they were forced to flee their home, trying to get to safety while their other brothers and mother were at war
- worshipped their oldest (half-)brothers, but were closer to the brother nearest their age
- spends the war stuck on an island, populated by people closely linked to their family’s origins - Skagosi are descended mostly from the First Men, while Viserys was on Lys, where the blood of Old Valyria still runs strong
- sought by/held hostage by a powerful and wealthy family, who will treat them well but whose intentions are dubious
- will be brought back from exile by an upjumped bastard/commoner from a port town who was raised to lordship and became their monarch’s chief admiral
- after they are returned, long after the wars and crises, is happily welcomed as the heir to their older brother’s throne (shhhhh just let me have this, let the baby live)
Thanks for the ask!
