Being In a Relationship With Link

Link is a bit of an airhead since he hasn't really had a romantic relationship before you

I decided Rauru’s arm is bigger than Link’s and he has to deal with the imbalance.

Link is grateful but actually hates the thing. He didn’t get to see his injury, feel the lack of forearm. He thinks he’d be way less clumsy without this foreign tool glued to his body.

Link blames himself for everything. His mind repeats on a loop that split second where he extended his arm "like a fool” and the red cloud of malice immediately destroyed it. Thinks he was “too happy and relaxed” after the calamity and that made him not alert.

I think botw/totk Link just naturally shuts down and goes nonverbal when under pressure. Even post-calamity.

His anxiety is nowhere near as bad as it was before he went into stasis, but, anxiety disorders are a mental illness and mental illness is literal brain damage. He also could be autistic, which could have heavily contributed to his anxiety-induced selective mutism.

Doesn’t matter how much of his memory is gone. His brain wiring is gonna be the same as before. He just doesn’t remember why he functions that way. He’s much more lively and emotive now, but, his symptoms still reveal themselves quite often.

Has anyone ever thought about a cybernetic Wild?

Link could have been rebuilt during the 100 year period instead of healed. What if the shrine couldn't heal but could only keep him alive so it had to create its own pieces to repair him with since it couldn't fix him biologically.

(Cyborg Link description ahead for anyone that wants to maybe use the idea themselves)

The shrine is made to only fix wound, never to regenerate things that are lost so when it was given a body that was missing large portions of flesh it has to improvise. From there it changes Link. His mangled arm is turned repaired, casted over by a black sleeve that is an exact mirror of his other arm. Metals covering the outside act as a thin but powerful layer of protection between the outside and inner circuits of the prosthetic.

Link's eye also needed to be replaced. The burns that took Link had done servre damage to his eye. An artificial eye would do him much better, allowing him to see much more then what a normal hylian could.

Finally was the slate. There was no real reason to add it as a permanent attachment to Link but it would come in handy, allowing Link to use most runes without the need of actively using the slate now being able to use the runes through the use of his new arm. Maybe the slate could be used as a machine to monitor his own well-being or fix internal problems.

Once a proper ancient shield is obtained it could be clipped to the back of his hand and used at his will without having to be summoned. Same could be used with a dagger, sword, or spear if he so chooses.

Now imagine how the chain would react to a cybernetic version of Wild. He might not even feel completely human to them. Left eye unnerves them. The black look to his arm with the odd metal armor wasn't too odd but he never takes it off. His inhuman strength would be intimating, especially if he had lost both arms (TOTK). Maybe they would be worried about his climbing at first but he could climb anything with just the tips of his fingers. Wind food it particularly odd that Wild can see things from much further then he could with his own telescope, it made him almost jealous.

I know I am very new to the Legend of Zelda fandom (I joined in 2016), however, I have a really hard time imagining Link as anything other than a mute, androgynous, twink.

I have no idea how anyone can imagine/fall in love with this idea of him being a tall, masculine, tank... I'm frankly horrified by the idea

BOTW Link headcanons

[no TOTK spoilers! but when I finish the game it's over for you bitches (update I finished the game but still not spoiling here lmao)]

I think Link isn't mute but definitely dislikes speaking, so he only speaks when he really has to.

He's very good at hiding when he's struggling with something or not feeling well, so people always think he's okay (people also tend to think he's emotionless because of his poker face but he's completely oblivious to it)

He used to know hylian sign language, but after his 100 years of sleepy time he forgot, so he picked up signs and code from different regions of Hyrule. He eventually relearns hylian sign but still uses the other stuff he learnt by reflex.

Boy looooves horses. He likes to sneak up on wild horses just to give them apples and carrots.

So much autism in this man.

you see how he always just has the master sword in the memories? yeah. he's an extremely skilled moron and prefers just having his sword rather than having a shield and bow alongside it, even if it's more practical and safer.

will eat anything. that's basically canon tho.

even after recovering his memories, he isn't sure how he used to think about the champions and Zelda. he knows he has strong feelings for all of them (he deeply wants to protect Zelda for instance) but like he has no idea if he loved Mipha back or if Revali annoyed him like he annoyed Revali. He's clueless.

He has a lot of scars and doesn't know where half of them come from.

After the calamity, he still sometimes has memory problems. He mainly has very bad short term memory and tends to forget what day it is, what week etc (no I'm not projecting)

He gets small flashbacks sometimes, some even look like very intense déjà vu because he'll like get a flashback of flying with his paraglider while actually flying with his paraglider.

He really likes his blue tunic. Its comfy and protects him, and it felt like a gift when he got it (when Impa gave it back to him)

He gets nightmares a lot, night terrors and sleep paralysis too, so he doesn't sleep much. He often just hangs out during the night and waits until he physically can't stay up anymore to sleep. (Zelda is so stressed out by this man he's giving her white hair. She tries to help but doesn't really know how).

he has intense panic attacks surrounding guardian stalkers, (unless they don't have legs). sometimes he's able to push back the panic until he's defeated or escaped the thing but other times he just falls to his knees in front of it, completely unable to function. he wasted a couple of fairies on these instances.

he collects flowers. silent princesses of course, for zelda, but he likes every type of flowers and loves to keep them and offer them to people or leave them on gravestones or near goddess statues.

he really likes his long hair, likes styling it and playing with it. he would hate to cut it

his eyes are really sensible to light from you know. being asleep for 100 years with his eyes closed

I said he loves horses but he honestly loves all animals. always pets doggies and likes to watch crabs dance around. he feeds animals when he can.

when he defeats monsters that were using horses, he brings the horse back to the closest stable or the closest patch of grass that looks safe and soothes them. also feeds them obv.

i saw this one post circling tloz twitter about link and i just think it’s so absurd. warning for some small totk spoilers. this is a big post because tloz is my special interest atm and i have things to say  

people are berating the devs for botw/totk for not giving link enough personality or outstanding attributes to his character, or “putting his exuberance in his personality in the wrong places” (i.e. link’s excited gestures and expressions when cooking, excited over the pony points in totk, generally any small bit of narrative that is not drawn toward the central plot versus his near expressionless face, stoic demeanor whenever zelda is in a cutscene with him in it) and i actually think, whether it was intentional or not, it’s completely understandable why link’s character acts the way that it does. 

this is the direct link to the twitter post in case the screenshots are difficult to see. no hate to op i will just write my opinion on my own blog because twitter is ruthless and stupid about people who don’t believe the same things as them lol

i know the devs aren’t trying that hard when using link’s century-long sleep + amnesia as a focal point to his character arc, but they should, because his entire personality in these two games literally is justified because of this. he’s one of my favorite reincarnations aside from oot and twilight princess link, because i feel as though the absence of this lore behind everything is even more reason to further his development and understanding of him as a fucking character. 

i headcanon link as neurodivergent, for many reasons, but i will only mention this as a small point in the overarching reason but anyway

these small scenes where link’s personality show through while interacting with people who do not directly interfere with his trauma, and have nothing to do with zelda and/or ganon/calamity, because there is no traumatic influence that would make him feel as though he has to hide what small bits of his own inner self that is left 

in these scenes where link is with zelda in present botw and in his memories on the slate, link is silent, blank face. in reality, for someone suffering from amnesia, and autistic, this will be the blueprint for this character to go, “hmm, i really don’t know anything about myself right now. but these pictures and glimpses of my past are the only way i can understand who i was before this happened. so i will only act on the behaviors i understand from memory.” 

totk link seeing zelda outside of his tiny bits of memory irl, and people are angry that he’s not expressive enough in the game? he just reunited with the person he is sworn to protect, and he’s supposed to feel all lovey-dovey, happy-feely?? I would assume link must think that zelda hates him, tbh, because we don’t GET this conversation in the game, all that link understands is the weight of his own responsibility and his own fuckups

this silent suffering knight is not link’s character. this is not his personality. this is the person that he thought would best suit this situation, much like how many neurodivergent people can quickly read a room, and chameleon themselves to best fit the people around them, and make them happy. the bits and pieces we see when link is not directly interacting with people associated with his past and trauma are the glimpses into his true self imo

link doesn’t try to bond with any of the other characters outside of the ones in the linear plot probably because he doesn’t fucking know how to. almost all of the memories in botw (i haven’t played totk yet but i know at least 50% of the plotline) link is either practicing fighting, guarding zelda, or just being zelda’s silent guide and companion, because yes, that’s his job, but that is also the only persona that makes sense to him. 

he wasn’t given his position to make friends with every other person in the game, screw the devs just because link got excited over the damn pony points apparently

in botw link very obviously doesn’t have any grasp on his own personal identity and the role he plays in the fate of humanity because of his memory loss, the fact he is thrust into this world that has essentially forgotten of his existence is pretty fucked up 

do people really expect a switch in link’s brain to go off and for him to suddenly assimilate this strong, knightly bravado, now with 1000+ unique expressions, just because zelda gave link very small bits of his memories back? just because he can see her face to face now? hell no. amnesia and trauma responses don’t work like that 

botw/totk link had NO backbone on how to move forward in his own character arc, because the only people that new about his existence other than zelda and the elders of the hyrule regions, were dead. like. would link really be smiling and excited around zelda and everyone else after the fact? 

OP in the tweet had mentioned that SS link behaved much differently than botw link does, he had life and was much more excitable and had complex emotions written on his face. well. obviously. because this is not the same link as SS link, they are in a different life path whereas SS link was not killed and then preserved for 100 years with all of his memories forgotten. SS link was still a young adult, a child even, he had fun character traits and cute expressions because could still enjoy life in skyloft and be a kid before fated responsibility and demise hit. like, at least oot link had a second chance at his childhood, botw/totk link was probably thrust into responsibility before he could even fathom what types of roles he would need to play when he grew up. 

link remains silent and because of this, probably masking his inner emotions 

he doesn’t know or think that anything other than his vow of silence is the best option. he’s probably terrified of fucking up again even if it means just expressing verbal or physical concern, sadness, joy--literally any emotion. i really can’t think of this link having any other thought processes other than this one. he isn’t a silly, mindless child. he’s an adult, or at least was forced to act like one before he was ready.
