Tumblr media
Opening the door to your apartment, you sigh.
It was a long day. The photoshoot lasted longer than you expected, and you didn't even get a chance to reprint your schedule. It was for the best though, you supposed. Namjoon didn't need you to do much of anything else besides assist him while he set up to get some work done.
Biting your bottom lip, you try not to feel guilty that you left him all alone. He said he needed no distractions, but you pray he doesn't pull an all-nighter. Knowing him, however...Glancing down at your phone, you wince at the week's schedule Mr. Sejin gave to you before leaving. He told you that getting a daily schedule would be tedious, and informed you that weekly schedules would be sent to you every Sunday.
As for this week...
They have hardly any free time, especially Namjoon. Filled to the brim with practices, photoshoots, and interviews...you can't imagine what it'd be like when promotions start. He really shouldn't be pulling all-nighters nowadays, he needs to rest now to prepare for the workload that will come his way.
You scoff.
Who are you kidding? Namjoon won't be likely to do that. He's the type to pour out every last of his waking spirit into his work. Even if you did go back to help, you'd probably be in the way. Not to mention the fact he wouldn't listen to a word you say.
Shaking your head, you wonder if your mother felt the same way when she was raising you.
Studying all night, practicing until your voice was sore or you couldn't dance anymore, pushing yourself to the very limit, preparing for your dream...
Swallowing hard, you push the thought out of your mind.
You don't have time for guilt.
Slipping out of your shoes, you advance, locking the door tightly behind you. In the corner of your mind, you wonder if Sunoh is sleeping already. Glancing at the clock, you roll your eyes. If he wasn't, he'd be crazy.
3 am already?
Reminds you of the times you would write till the wee hours of the morning. Creating countless stories and adventures, different worlds and different people, trying to find a way to escape when you had nowhere else to run. When was the last time you were inspired to even pick up a pencil much less write?
"I hate being alone." You murmur, rubbing your face. "I always think too much."
Setting your satchel on the counter island, you empty its contents and come across the contract. Freezing, you slowly pull it out and stare at it.
This is your dream.
So why are you hesitating?
Taking it to the table, you pull out a chair and carefully set it down.
It couldn't hurt to read through, could it?
You wonder why you are so afraid. What he did wasn't even something to be worried about. But when the one you cherish the most tells you you'll never make it, that you aren't talented enough...
He heard your voice and called it mediocre, amateur, and told you to find a new dream. Told you to give up on something you would never succeed at. Told you everything you worked so hard for was worthless. It was unrealistic, it wasn't worth trying.
You'd never make it anyway.
You weren't nearly as pretty enough to fit their standards.
You weren't perfect enough to pass their expectations.
You weren't made for the dream, so you shouldn't be given the chance to achieve them.
Groaning, you try to swallow the lump in your throat, you try to ignore everything you wish to hold back, but you can't.
How?
How could they see that you were worth something?
Obviously, you aren't worth that much, obviously, you aren't that special...
"Why are you hesitating?"
Remembering what Suga said, you wonder at the question yourself.
This is supposed to be your dream, you are supposed to hold onto it no matter what others tell you. No matter what people may think. It's something that's made to be eternal, that won't give up as long as you don't give up either.
Are you afraid?
"Yes. I'm terrified."
But why are you terrified? Why can't you forget the past?
"What if he's right? What if I'm not cut out for this?"
So are you afraid of what others think?
"No."
Then what is it?
You think of everyone who is counting on you, their high expectations. What they are risking for you. You think of the people who came before you, how hard they tried for this chance, just so they can achieve a dream they may never get. You think of your mother, who lost the very same dream and could never achieve it.
What is holding you back?
"What if I let them down?" you whisper softly, as a tear finally escapes its blockade and lands on the very same contract you've been holding in your hands.
You've dreamed of this. Receiving your first contract and signing with a company, ready to become a trainee, ready to be the singer; the performer you've always wanted. You've imagined the scenario in your head, acted it out many times over and over again. This was supposed to be a happy moment, the moment when all your hard work meant something. The moment when you finally took the next step towards your goal.
Inwardly, you want to scream in joy. You want to cry from happiness. But that fear, that blockade of terror, that is the one thing that holds you back.
What if when you finally let go, when you allow yourself to be happy again, it's ruined?
I gave everything to you.
"Shut up."
But you threw it away.
"Stop."
And for what? A dream that will never find its way out of your head?
"You're not here."
It's worthless hoping for something that can never happen.
"You don't know that."
Do you want to be worthless?
"You don't get to dictate my life."
Biting your lip, turn the final page of the contract, and find the dotted line. A line that will sign your life away. A line that holds every dream, every wish, every hope you've gathered in your small wish to be an idol. To sing on the stage, to perform and touch the world with your music.
Your world.
Finding a pen amongst the confines of your satchel, you put the tip gently to the paper and sign your name.
You smile once you do, and hold your hands to your face.
Letting out a small shriek, you let your excitement take control of your body and you allow the euphoric feeling of happiness to spread throughout you. You push back the feelings of doubt, the paralyzing helplessness of terror. For now, that doesn't matter. At this moment, those feelings aren't important.
Who cares about what's to happen in the future?
Would you rather be held back because of things you can't control?
No, this is your choice. This is your life.
You make the choice, no one else can make it for you.
At the harsh ringer of the phone, you jump. Startled, you turn to it from where it sits on the counter and check the caller ID.
One step at a time right?
That's all it takes to be okay again.
To move on.
Maybe it's time you talked to her.
Setting the pen down, you pick up your phone, taking a deep breath before accepting the call.
"Hi, Mom."
Tumblr media
she finally called her mom! question, on a scale of 1-10 how angry would your guys' mom be if you ghosted her for this long? 0.o cuz mine would disown me for the longest time.

“I know, I know ..y’all ready to beat my ass and I don’t blame you. I can hear my girlfriend in my head right now cussing me out so I HAVE to apologize. There’s an excuse but I won’t waste your time with my shit. We are going to jump directly into todays episode with a recap”
Zion cleared her throat dramatically, “Last episode you all got know a little bit about your favorite host and I want to give a shoutout to the episodes top listeners, follow them on all social media platforms at @brillixdis, @syxrai, @msfarrahzuri and my favorite little cousin who I owe drinks to @dvnasti.
Thank you all for the support, the likes and shares mean a lot. If you’d like to be featured as a top listener all you have to do is interact in the comment section on Apple Podcasts.
It’s time for the good shit. So the episode I had recorded I discussed the influence of DMX and all of those who came before him that made his music so emotional and iconic. They truly don’t make gems like him anymore and I hope he is resting in eternal peace.
To be honest, I haven’t been listening to any new music lately but I do want to just play some of my favorites right now that me and my daughter have in rotation.”
Zion laughed a bit at the thought before she started playing ‘Good Days’. She let 30 seconds play before she started talking again.
“This song is by an LA resident, and goes by the name Major. Her handle is @somajor . Me and my little one have been listening to this every day since it shuffled on a playlist of mine so fo check that out if you haven’t already. A vibe fr.
Not let’s get into the TEA of it all. Hashtag Note to Self, sis ... BE YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES, period. All my life I was told how I should act, how I should talk, how I should move, etc and I can honestly say that when I finally found my freedom in High School to really be myself and be the girl I KNEW I wanted to be, life became less stressful. My grades got better, I started gaining weight aka my lil booty was growing, hair flourishing. Y’all, deadass.
Well recently my boss had me go and meet with a department head at my job about a higher position, for higher pay and they were telling me all of the things that I would have to do to fit the new position that I was trying to get. With the place that I’m in now, my schedule is flexible, I work from home, I have no deadlines, no real pressing responsibilities because I get my work done at a pace and a frequency that works with my department. These demands were unrealistic given the fact that I also care my children during the day now.
The money is about 15 thousand dollars added to my current salary but y’all ... as I was listening to those demands and unrealistic expectations I went back to that 13 year old girl who was always being told how to do something the way that OTHERS wanted me to do. I went back to my boss and I told her that I couldn’t do it.
Do y’all know this lady told me that she was just looking for an opportunity to give me a raise? And that I didn’t have to take the higher position, she’d change my job description and the 15 thousand added to my salary was mine .. all I had to do was sign the new contract.
We’ll get into following your heart and going after your dreams one day but I BEG, wherever you are right now in life — if you continue to be yourself you will see the fruits of that labor play out in ways you never would’ve imagined. While you’re being you, somebody somewhere is watching and waiting to give you your flowers.
Please, in the comment section tell me where you do for a living and a short term goal you have for yourself.
I look forward to reading and responding. Thank for listening yall. I hope I inspired you to continue being the boss you are. Talk to you soon. Byyyyyye.

How to Choose a Career that You’ll Love (even if you don’t know what you want to do)
How do most people choose a career?
Well…they don’t. They stumble into a job after college, take whatever they can get, then follow one of the few paths available from that random job.
No wonder most people are frustrated in their careers.
But there actually IS a way to narrow down your potential interests to choose a career that you will love.
Ramit Sethi, our founder and career-path guru, has put together a Dream Job system that helps you explore ALL the careers you’re interested in, test each to see if you’d really enjoy doing them, and move on to other jobs if they’re not a good fit.
Here are some of our best tips on finding a career you love – even if you have no idea what you want to do.
1. Understand yourself and your personality
A good evaluation of your personality defines the kind of job you would fit into. And we’re not talking about taking a random career personality test and doing whatever it tells you to do – those tests are usually unrealistic, and can’t paint a clear picture of what really drives you.
Instead, ask yourself the following questions and let your responses guide your career search.
Bonus: Want to fire your boss and start your dream business? Download our FREE Ultimate Guide to Business.
What motivates you?
The first step in assessing your personality is finding out what motivates you. If you can’t answer that question on your own, turn to friends, family, and colleagues to understand your driving force. When do they recognize your eyes lighting up? Maybe it’s after you’ve helped someone, or when you’ve solved a difficult problem. Understanding what gives you energy can help point you in the right career direction.
Evaluate your skills
Some jobs tap into soft skills, like communication and personality, while others demand a particular academic skill set. For instance, technical jobs automatically require you to possess an analytical mindset/background. You cannot apply for a scientific research position when your only training is in art history. If you do want to make a career switch, that’s ok, but understand that you’ll likely need additional training.
Understand your weaknesses and dislikes
Have some self-awareness and get clear on your major weaknesses and dislikes. You may realize that you have poor delegation skills or that you hate team collaboration. You’ll need to recognize where you have weaknesses or outright dislikes. For example, if you don’t like talking to people, you probably won’t want to consider a career in customer service.
2. Make a list of potential careers to explore
One of the most daunting parts of choosing a career is picking just ONE job…that you’re supposed to do for the rest of your life.
“What if I decide that I hate doing X? Can I ever do something else?”
“What if I want to change careers in a few years? What do I do then?”
“What if I like to do LOTS of things and can’t decide where to focus?”
Just start by listing ALL the careers and job titles you might be interested in.
Anything you want to explore, just write it down.
Think copywriting sounds fun? Add it to your list.
You can imagine yourself as a marketing director? List it out.
Know someone that does inside sales and what they do sounds cool? Put it on the page.
Have you toyed with the idea of being a baker? Nothing is too left field. Write it down.
Ramit call this the Cloud Technique because your options are as open as the sky.
This lets you say “Yes” to EVERYTHING you’re curious about instead of constantly saying “No, I can’t do that because…”
Where should your ideas come from? Here are a few career brainstorming tips:
List any careers or job titles that caught your attention in the past.
Go to LinkedIn or another job listing site and read job descriptions. If anything catches your eye or seems like it’d be fun to do, add that to your list of potential ideas.
Think about the skills you already have or the ones you’d like to develop. Then, search for jobs that involve those skills. For example, do you really like design and being creative? See what jobs require those skills by searching online. Put these options on your list of potential careers as well.
Think about people whose jobs you envy. Have you always been jealous of your aunt because she is a tour manager with your favorite band? Write that down.
Bonus: Want to finally start getting paid what you’re worth? We show you exactly how in our Ultimate Guide to Getting a Raise and Boosting Your Salary
3. Research your top choices
Once you’ve tentatively selected a few job titles, it’s time to do some deep research. This is where you go from “Hmm…sounds interesting” to truly understanding what the job is about.
Remember: You don’t have to become 100% knowledgeable about these roles… just yet. You just want to learn as much as you need to see if a job is right for you.
Let’s use the job title of “engineer” as an example of what you’ll want to look for.
The first thing, you’ll want to do is get a bird’s eye view of the job:
What do engineers actually do?
What are the different types of engineers out there (petroleum, electrical, civil…)?
What kinds of companies do they work for?
You can find this info with a quick search through Wikipedia or Googling “introduction to [INSERT JOB].”
As you tackle those broad and sweeping questions, you may start to eliminate some options you originally listed. And that’s okay. In fact, that’s expected. Just because something sounds interesting in theory, doesn’t always mean it will be.
You actually want to narrow things down in this stage. If at any point, you run out of job titles on your list, simply go back to step three (with your new insights on what you want from a job) and start again.
Once you have a basic high-level understanding of the positions, you can dive deeper into the nitty-gritty details:
What does this job pay?
What type of educational experience is required?
What’s the trajectory?
What does the job look like on a day-to-day basis?
How many hours per week do they work?
Is there travel involved?
What makes a great engineer vs. simply a good one? Is it a strategic vision? Creative ideas? Quantitative skills?
What blogs/books/websites do they read regularly in order to stay “in the know?”
Bonus: Want to work from home, control your schedule, and make more money? Download our FREE Ultimate Guide to Working from Home.
The whole time you’re going through this process, ask yourself “Could I see myself doing this?” and “Is this something that still interests me?”
This process helps you discover what it is you truly enjoy. Once you’ve narrowed your list down again, you’re ready to hear from people who actually work in these roles. That’s how you guarantee this is the right career choice.
4. Conduct informational interviews
An informational interview is an informal talk you have with a subject working in your desired profession. It is the last step you take when deciding your career path.
You may have heard about informational interviews before, but few people actually take this critical step. Two things you need to know:
An informational interview is an opportunity to meet someone you’re curious about and learn from them. So if you’re curious what a product manager or engineer really does and want inside tips about the job, this is how you find that out.
People want to meet with smart people who are curious in the same things. That means you, if you send a great email, have insightful questions, and are interesting.
Here’s how to set up an informational interview:
Book their time
First, identify people who you’d like to speak to. Then, reach out with a friendly email asking if they’d be willing to meet with you. Here’s a sample email script you can modify and use.
Subject: Hello, Allen!
I hope all is well and that this email finds you in good spirits. I’m thinking of catching up on a few things regarding my career choice.
I read about quality control in large pharmaceutical companies and am passionate about it, but there is not much information on the ground experience. The job will have me on the production line, and I’m interested to know what that looks like and what should I be ready for? I know you are resourceful, given your over a decade-long career in the same line, which I admire greatly!
Would you mind virtually connecting with me for a brief period where I can get your ideas on quality control as a line engineer?
Please let me know a good time to connect.
Kind Regards,
Tommy
Keep it short. Go straight to the point and give a compelling reason.
Prepare talking points
You don’t want to show up to an informational interview with nothing to say. Prepare your questions ahead of time, and do a little research on the person you’ll be interviewing, too. This will help you connect with them while getting the most out of the interview.
Speak about your challenges truthfully
An informational interview is the perfect place for you to share reservations about the job you’re learning about. After all, you haven’t chosen it as a career yet. It’s better to find out that it’s not a good fit for you now than in the future once you’ve started in that line of work.
Be a good listener
Be attentive and take notes during your informational interview. Ask questions during the conversation. If you don’t know what to ask, you can always ask an open-ended question like, “Is there more you can tell me more about XYZ?”
Send a thank-you note
Sending a thank-you note is mission critical after an informational interview. Even if you don’t want to go into that line of work after the interview, you never want to burn a professional bridge by not following up. Drop the person you spoke with an email and let them know how their advice is helping you achieve your goals.

On his 90th birthday, Stephen Sondheim sang Happy Birthday to Andrew Lloyd Webber…while washing his hands for 20 seconds in his bathroom sink — a playful gesture that is an instantly iconic moment for this new era.
It was Andrew Lloyd Webber’s birthday as well; he turned 72, and the younger composer had more straightforwardly wished Sondheim a happy birthday from his piano room.
They both did this live on the one-night only resurrected Rosie O’Donnell Show (watch here), a fundraiser for The Actors Fund that lasted three and a half hours on Sunday night and featured dozens of Broadway stars, performing from their home via home cam. It was all a reflection of an emerging aesthetic in theater, in the face of the stay-at-home mandate to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Call it the theatrical equivalent of home cooking.
Some of Rosie’s guests had messages meant to inspire. We lived through a Plague before,” Judith Light said, referring to AIDS. “We were together then, and we’ll be together now.” Click on the photographs of other guests for the captions.

The Rosie O’Donnell Show was meant to be a one-time affair. So was 24 Hour Plays’ “Viral Monologues” — 20 scripted monologues by established playwrights for well-known performers. Similar “home cooking” hybrid theater shows have sprouted up in the last few days aiming to be regular series — including the twice daily Stars in the House, with hosts with hosts Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley, and the daily National Yiddish Theater’s Folksbiene Live, as well as La Mama’s weekly Downtown Variety — the first of which I reviewed, Downtown Variety #1,
There are also plays that had been slated for the stage that are experimenting with online runs, some free, some charging admission. Launching today (March 23) are Ren Dara Santiago’s “The Siblings Play” at Rattlestick Playwright Theater in New York, and Lauren Gunderson’s “I and You” from the Hampstead Theater in the UK. There will be more such online runs, given Actors’ Equity’s new, temporary contracts that allow select producers to record and then release performances online to ticket buyers. (The agreements do not apply to Broadway, which already include rules for “media capture.”)

Artist and Theater Support
The Broadway League and the 14 Broadway unions hammered out an “emergency relief” agreement that, for a few weeks anyway, will support the Broadway cast and crew now without employment, and continue their health insurance.
Financial Fallout of the Coronavirus New York’s performing-arts scene has taken hits before—after 9/11, during the recession that began in 2007, after Hurricane Sandy—but its elimination for an indefinite period of time is unprecedented….“All theatre people, except the ones who have institutional jobs—we’re gig people,” Daniel Goldstein, co-writer of “Unknown Soldier” whose day job, as an associate director on the Broadway show “Come From Away” is also now gone, said. “We’re no different than a handyman. When the theatres closed we were literally all unemployed. Everyone I know is unemployed.”

  Grim Coronavirus News
New York has now become the epicenter of the coronavirus in the United States, as the Atlantic Magazine coronavirus tracker makes clear. New York State has about half of all the cases in the U.S., and the vast majority of the cases in the state are centers in the New York City region.
Coronavirus in N.Y.C.: Region Is Now an Epicenter of the Pandemic “Three weeks after its first coronavirus infection was discovered, the New York City region reached an alarming milestone on Sunday: It now accounts for roughly 5 percent of the world’s confirmed cases, making it an epicenter of the pandemic and increasing pressure on officials to take more drastic measures….As of 8 p.m. on Sunday, all nonessential businesses were ordered closed… Residents were told to stay inside except for necessities like food, medicine and short bouts of exercise.”

When Will Broadway Reopen?
Given the exponential spread of the coronavirus, and the ever-more drastic measures promised to try to curb it, the initial goal of reopening Broadway on April 12th is looking increasingly unrealistic.
Broadway isn’t coming back until the summer — at best — producers speculate to Michael Riedel, & @TheTonyAwards not until Fall. But Broadway WILL come back. https://t.co/bBpKAD7j2J pic.twitter.com/y2meUhNxjV

Cancellations
Since the shut-down of Broadway on March 12th and of all New York City theaters on March 15th, there has been such a steady stream of news reports, e-mails and Tweets announcing cancellations, that it’s easier to point to what is actually staying open or still scheduled – nothing, really, except what’s happening online.
But several cancellations in particular sting.
Show Score, the critic aggregation site that had already cut back, is shutting down — they hope temporarily.

On the day of the news of the “emergency relief” agreement guaranteeing payment for those working on scheduled Broadway shows, both “Hangmen” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,”  shows that had been scheduled to open this season, announced that they would not return when Broadway resumes.

Rest in Peace
Gerald Freedman, 92, renowned director, artistic director, and educator whose students included Robin Williams and Mandy Patinkin, was a 21-time Broadway veteran, beginning as a directorial assistant to Jerome Robbins on the original Broadway production of “West Side Story.”  Among the dozens of shows he directed Off Broadway was the original production of the musical “Hair” at the Public Theater. He went on to become for 21 years the dean of the School of Drama at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, which named its theater after him.

Written Evaluation
For this project I had to create a 30 second animation based on sound, I had to represent what I visualized from the sound as well as what it made me think and feel. After choosing the song ‘On The Run’ by Pink Floyd I created my animation in stop motion using clay models and green screen.
Initially I listened to the music to see how it made me feel. In my written reflective piece I mentioned feelings of being in danger and falling, relating to wider themes of paranoia. Utilising these emotions I considered situations that could evoke such feelings and eventually came to the conclusion I would be on the run from an ambiguous dark character. Following this decision, I thought about TV shows and other works which had used similar music and what was portrayed within the scenes.
The song itself eluded to being in a tunnel due to the continued echoing voice, which I personally connected to psychedelic tunnel art. These works are composed of patterns which morph to the viewer’s perception. I found this very interesting and I thought about producing a tunnel with faces coming out of the sides when the voice echoed and rippling the patterns to match the beat of the music- perhaps similar to a kaleidoscope. However I didn’t go forward with this idea because the time frame to complete something so complex with would not have worked well for me.
TV shows such as ‘Rick and Morty’, ‘Final Space’ and the film Gravity were really influential on developing my project. There is a few scenes in each work that used similar music to the song, these scenes were largely space pursuits and dramatic cinematics during intense moments. In ‘Rick and Morty’ and ‘Final Space’ there were space pursuits where two characters were trying to escape a near death situation. This inspired me to consider basing my animation in a space setting, using the vast emptiness and darkness to depict how the music made me feel. The film ‘Gravity’ was also set in space where the main character is in danger and has only one option but to try to survive. This concept fed into the idea of a space pursuit, hence leading me to the notion of creating scenes where there is no option but to try and run for your life.
In both the animations the main character has a sidekick/companion in their adventures. They both have deep connections with their counterpart and made the scenes with the music intensify as one character is in danger and the other has to save them.  These animations make the viewer more involved in the plot and entices them to keep watching to see what happens next due to the character’s emotional connection. Through this I storyboarded some concepts of a dog and a human in space on the run from an evil character.
When storyboarding I proposed doing a mix of 3rd person shots and 1st person shots to create a more dynamic flowing animation. I primarily wanted to take this idea forward by animating my work using drawn illustrator files and after effects scenery. As the project progressed I found this idea unrealistic as the time constraints wouldn’t allow me to do this as drawing the character along with moving each part frame by frame was increasingly difficult; especially considering I need to further improve my adobe software knowledge. So instead I decided to go forth with a stop motion Claymation using the dragon frame software.
For this I created models out of clay with wire and a green screen set for editing afterwards. The idea was to have the two characters floating on a frame through the set running away from the pursuing character. I think the end result was highly successful because I managed to have characters floating on camera through scenes which when reviewed looked sufficient for my first attempt at doing a Claymation. Considering the time constraints what I produced I believe was very successful because it showed the story I wanted and more importantly I felt similar emotions linking to the audio while watching my animation. My goal was to match my visual representation through the design of my characters and the after effects I placed on the video which I feel I succeeded.
When reviewing my work there are a few things I would do differently to make producing and making easier. First off I would time plan my work out properly, my main issue was feeling rushed and trying to cut corners to get to the end result. I aim to layout a proper schedule plan for future work so that I know what need completing and prioritising. Secondly I would make a more suitable set and working parts for the movement of characters. The setup I had was quite rushed and wasn’t the sturdiest of construction. In the future I will make my slider frame out of wood and wire instead of just wire making the movement more natural, less jittery and overall would be much more time effective. Furthermore I would use another material than fishing wire to hold up the characters. While I found it worked effectively for this animation it wasn’t the most reliable. If I decide to use a similar set-up in the future I will invest in some rigs to hold my characters in place with ease which would make it easier to edit them out of frame when needed. Another point would be to build a more efficient, sturdy green screen that fit the area I was using and less flimsy. I would re-enforce the back of the screen with wood or plastic to compensate for the size or the boards. Finally I would create the characters in a lighter material and thinner wires to make movements and adjustments easier as trying to do much this with the smaller more clay based characters proved quite difficult given their weight.
In conclusion I think the project has been an overall success. I feel I met what the brief was asking for and produced a working animation that represented how the audio made me feel and visualize. From this I have learned to plan out my time more effectively so that I have time to make better characters and sets that would benefit me in the long run and aid me to create a more professional looking animation.

2017 Postmortem: 10 Questions
Tumblr media
As 2017 finally and mercifully comes to end, it is time to reflect.
Originally, I had a long piece talking about my experience of the past year. I got about 1200 or so words into the piece before deciding to do something else. It was a combination of feeling that I was oversharing in parts and the piece being too melon collie.
I’m not going to say 2017 was a complete sh*t year for me, unlike 2016. There was a fair amount of terrible, but there was also a lot of good that came from it.
I have decided to look back at the year by answering 10 questions.
What made up your body of work this year? Which parts are you most proud of?
A lot my work was in the automotive realm with the majority being news and new car reviews. There was a small number of opinion pieces that I tackled this year.
At the beginning of the year, I delved into the disappointing Detroit Auto Show and looked into the possible reasons as to what happened.
Then in July, I pondered what is the right size vehicle for me. This stemmed from me looking at various compact vehicles.
Here on Contradictory Enigmas, I wrote about my writing troubles. I can report that it has gotten somewhat better, but there are still times where I struggle.
What were your top 5 moments of the year?
Getting my splint removed and given the ok to put weight on my right leg
Doing a massive clean out of my room (7 garbage bags full of stuff, 50-plus books being donated)
Beginning to work on a backlog of fiction reading
Almost filling out a notebook with just writing practice
Being able to drive one of my dream cars, a Lexus LC 500 towards the end of the year
What are you really glad is over?
Aside from the year itself?
I would likely say the feeling of being stuck and thinking that I will not be able to move on. Being in a deep hole, I try my best to climb/claw my way out, only to fall back down and having to start once again. Having this happen over and over becomes very demotivating. It makes you want to give up. But something in me persisted to keep trying. One day, you will be able to climb out.
At least right now, I still fall down. But I know, sooner or later, I will be able to get out.
How are you different today than you were 365 days ago?
I could easily list some of the negative items. For one, I have become a bit more socially awkward. I get way too nervous after sending out emails asking about new work or making a phone call about possibly scheduling a vehicle for review. Talking to someone new is very uncomfortable and I try to avoid it. A lot of this stems from not getting out of the house as much as I would like to during the past year. Plus, I’m not sleeping as much as I used to.
On the positives, I have been working on taking time for myself to anything else other than work. There is a stopping point I have on every workday that I follow, along with taking Sundays off. The challenge now is trying to figure out what to do with all of this time, aside from binging Netflix and YouTube. Cutting back on social media has helped in terms of my mental health and avoiding the FOMO phenomenon. It has also reduced my cynical thoughts by a wide margin - except on politics, but there are reasons to that.
Is there anything you achieved that you forgot to celebrate?
Surprised at how resilient I have become over the past year. This was brought to light when I was notified that a company I had applied for went in a different direction for a job. I was devastated by the news as I got really far in the application process.
Usually, I would dive into work as a way to distract myself from this. But this never worked, only causing more stress and direness. This time, I would decide to a break from work and just let feelings work through. I would lay down for a bit and then find various distractions. A day later, most of the anguish and sadness would be gone. To say I was shocked was a massive understatement.
What have you changed your perspective on this year?
Realizing that I shouldn't feel guilty for taking time off from doing work. 2016 was the year of me trying to survive. I was constantly working seven days a week to make ends meet. As much I as wanted to take a break, I knew that it wasn't going to happen. Aside from feeling burnt out, this train of thought would cause me to feel quite guilty for taking some time for myself.  But this changed within the first few months of the year. I could tell my creativity and quality in my writing was going down. Something needed to change. It has been hard to change this mindset that dictated my 2016. But slowly, I have been making time for myself.
Cutting back the amount of news I take in has also done wonders. 2017 has been a year where it everyone is trying to become more informed with various news sources and gobbling up every story. The problem with is you get the feeling that the world is coming to an end and nothing good is happening. For me, I stay up to date by listening/reading news summaries in the morning and early evening. I might not know everything that is happening in the world at a given moment and I'm ok with that.
The last thing is that I need to get over the hangups of asking for help. I worry that I'm being a bit of a pain and taking advantage of someone when asking for help. But there is a little voice in my head that tells me that isn't true. - you don't constantly bug people about possible new work or looking at a piece, nor have squandered any opportunities in quite some time. It is ok to ask for help, you just need to do it.
Who are the people that really came through for you this year?
The various editors that I worked with over the past year. They were all willing to take some time to go over my work to make them the best they could be. The editors would also take some time to talk with me about areas where I could improve and go over possible ideas. Any writer knows an editor is worth their weight in gold and I'm very lucky to have a few of them.
There was also the small group of close friends to help me get through the year. I'll admit that I feel terrible for not talking with them as much as I would like. But they would always seem to be happy whenever I would call.
What were some pieces of media that defined your year?
Gotta Knock A Little Harder - Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts, Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door: Future Blues
youtube
The closing song to the Cowboy Bebop movie has been on heavy rotation for me this past year. Some of the lyrics hit close to home.
Always keepin' safe inside Where no one ever had a chance To penetrate a break in
Let me tell you some have tried But I would slam the door so tight That they could never get in
Kept my cool under lock and key And I never shed a tear Another sign of my condition
Fear of love or bitter vanity That kept me on the run The main events at my confession
I kept a chain upon my door That would shake the shame of Cain Into a blind submission
It is a reminder for me that I cannot remain closed off from people. I need to be ok with being somewhat vulnerable, or else I'm locked up in a room of my own making and no one is coming to get me out.
The Rook - Daniel O'Malley
Trying to read any sort of fiction has been really for me. I tend to lose interest very quickly and not fully sure why. The Rook was one of the few fiction books that keep me interested this year. A secret agency that deals with supernatural threats and the main character who lost her memory - you have my attention. I’ll be reading the sequel sometime next year.
Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within - Natalie Goldberg
This book got me to start doing journaling with various ideas for pieces, stories, and other bits. I still need to finish the book though.
Promises - Monophonics
I only came across this song a few weeks ago and it has become one of my favorites. Something about this song makes want to constantly replay it once it ends.
What will you be leaving behind in 2017?
Setting unrealistic expectations on a number of things, "After I finish X, I can be happy," train of thoughts for example. Also, not trying to predict my future holds as it makes me miserable if it doesn't work out.
What are your goals for 2018?
The big goal for 2018 is figuring out who the hell I am.  In 2016, I felt that I lost the knowledge of who I was. Sure I am a human who is in their late 20s and writes about the auto industry and other bits. But other than those pieces, everything else about myself seemed to fade into black.
This past year has seen me pick up the various bits and pieces of myself in an effort to figure out who I am. It's a complicated puzzle where I have some of the pieces and trying to piece them together. There are a number of pieces that are missing - they could be somewhere else waiting to be unearthed or have faded away.
Next year is where I begin to put the puzzle together by working with the pieces that I have and also creating new ones to help fill in the gaps. I know that I will never be able to complete the puzzle, but I want to feel like that I have made some significant process, not starting at a giant pile and wondering what should I do.
Farewell 2017. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

PART 1: PERSONALITY TEST
Based on the test on 16-personalities, my MBTI is apparently INFJ (Introverted-Intuitive-Feeling-Judging). I have to say that I agree with my results. This is because all of the personality types I got applied to me. For the “I”, which is Introverted, I really am more of an introvert rather than an extrovert because I tend to keep to myself and avoid crowds. When given the choice of attending social event or staying at home, reading a book, I would immediately pick reading a book immediately. The infographics stated that Introverts usually like working alone or in small groups and likes focusing on one task at a time, which definitely applies to me as I prefer working in small groups and I tend to finish one task first before starting on another. For the “N”, which is Intuitive, I must say that I have that kind of personality too as I like to focus on achieving the goal rather than the ways on how to achieve it step by step, missing some important details in the process. As for the “F”, which is Feeling, it also applies to me since whenever there is a groupwork that is given, I usually let my groupmates take the lead first since I want them to choose what they want to do rather than letting my opinions be heard first. In the case when I want to do a certain task, I ask for their permission first before doing it. The infographics also stated that Feelers tend to be sensitive and cooperative, which I am, although I am more sensitive when doing the task since I want the task to be done as soon as possible and I get upset when one of the members haven’t done any of their assigned part yet. For the “J”, which is Judging, I must say that I definitely do have that personality. This is because I always have a to-do list for everyday and most of the time, I stick to the schedule, which is why I am kind of uncomfortable whenever unexpected things come, as I may not be able to follow my plans for the day. I want for things to be perfect so that things would go smoothly and I also think that there are times, when making decisions, that I should play it safe rather than take a risk. Finally, for the 5th dimension, I got a “T”, which is Turbulent and based on the infographics, all of the characteristics apply to me. This is because I tend to be self-conscious since I think too much of what other people think of me and I hate it whenever I make mistakes that would give a bad impression. I am also very stressed easily, especially when things don’t go my way and I end up getting in trouble or my work wasn’t as good as I wanted and I change my mood easily. I am also the type of person who wants to be successful in everything that I do since I would be told that I am doing a good job.
Based on the infographics, the recommended careers (i.e. school counselor, writer) for my personality type does appeal to me. As I said earlier, I am an introvert, however, I do love to take to people but I prefer it would be a small group or a one-on-one session since I would get to know more about them if it was only the two of us and it is also my opinion that having fewer people would have a deeper relationship and being able to me more comfortable opening up to one another. I also love it when people talk to me about themselves such as their experiences or problems, since it means that I would get to learn new things and it means that they trust me for them to talk to me about these things. The particular career that did appeal to me based on the infographics is being a writer because I love to imagine things, although some of them are unrealistic. Writing also gives me a chance to express my thoughts, some of which I am unable to convey properly, and although my writing skills aren’t really good, it is still something I like doing.
In my opinion, knowing your personality would help you know your strengths and weaknesses, especially if you’re aiming to be a successful business leader. This is because knowing your strength would help you make decisions when it comes to tasks given such as assigning work to different members of the organization and knowing your weakness would help you know which areas to improve on since if it doesn’t, it would be a hindrance to you, which could affect your performance in the company. Although it is unsure whether or not knowing your personality type would help, it is still better to know it since you would be able to know how your work habit are formed and it will help you understand yourself better.
PART 2: R-I-A-S-E-C PROFILE
When I took the test for R-I-A-S-E-C, my top 3 are Social, Artistic, and Enterprising and I have to say that I am quite surprised with my results. My top 1 is Social and at first, I thought Social is about being extroverted and good at communicating with many people, however, as I found out that Social means that you like to help, counsel or teach other people, I thought that it applied to me since I like to focus on other people as much as myself. My top 2 is Artistic, and again, I thought that this characteristic also applied to me since it did have some of my hobbies such as writing and being able to imagine and create different scenarios in my head and I would like to work in some of the fields listed under it. My top 3 is Enterprising, however this time, I did not expect myself to have traits associated in Enterprising. This is because traits stated in Enterprising consists of good public speaking, extroversion, and social skills, all of which I lack and although I do have some leadership skills, it is still lacking as I consider myself as a follower more than a leader. As for Conventional, I do have some of the traits listed such as practical, careful, and likes to work indoors, however, some traits are completely my opposite such as persistent and unimaginative. For Investigative, I lack most of these traits since most of them seem analytical in nature and there are times when I do like solving problems but not as much as writing. Finally, my lowest is Realistic and I agree that I lack most of these traits as it is describes as liking to work with mechanics and outdoors, which I usually dislike doing as I consider myself as an indoor person. All in all, I would say that my results are consistent with each characteristic description.
There are some suggested jobs fitting in my R-I-A-S-E-C profile that I am interested in because those are some of the jobs that I am interested to try, although I still lack the skills and knowledge on how to do these jobs well and the jobs that I am interested at are what I like to do or it fits my personality. However, there are some jobs that were suggested didn’t interest me at all since I think that I don’t have the potential or talent to be able to do those types of jobs. The level of preparation I chose is high job preparation since I want to be prepared and it is what I am currently taking and based on the suggested jobs given by O*Net Profiler, I think that I am capable of being a Training & Development Specialist/Manager because I like to help people enhance their skills and see to it that they are doing their best to do and also because I want to see people work hard to achieve their goals by training themselves to be better at what they do to achieve good results.
If I will take one of the suggested jobs for my profile, I do think that I would have a fulfilling career because I am able to have a job where I could use my skills, knowledge, and personality at their best and also because I am doing something that I want to do and not only because I want to earn a lot of money and be successful. Yes, I want to be successful and well-known but I want to do it by doing something I love rather than being successful but doing something I hate or something that is not my passion. In my opinion, there would be times when I would think that I should’ve chosen a different job since it’s getting more difficult but then I would think that the job I chose is what I wanted to do and worked so hard for.
In my opinion, I don’t agree with the comparison of my level of Introversion/Extroversion to my R-I-A-S-E-C profile because I am more on the Introvert side rather than the Extrovert and the top 3 of my R-I-A-S-E-C profile (Social, Artistic, and Enterprising) are either near the Extroversion side or in between the Extroversion and Introversion. I think that my R-I-A-S-E-C profile had those results because it seemed that I like talking to people and I do, however, I like talking to them in either small groups or in a one-on-one session.
PART 3: SELFSTIR 360° ASSESSMENT
Through the self-stir assessment, I was able to rate myself on how I think I do on my performance. My peers also rated me, which gave me an insight as to what they thought of my performance. I learned that my greatest strengths are: being able to share my thoughts and feelings, belief and knowledge; being able to meet targets and priorities; listening and understanding of others’ communication; valuing others’ opinions and insights; likes to work with other people; and holding myself accountable for my actions and performances, successes and failures. On the other hand, my weaknesses are: not being able to express myself clearly and effectively; remaining objective, respectful, and non-judgmental in decisions; allowing myself to be vulnerable; placing shared interest above personal one; and allowing myself to be vulnerable when appropriate.
I would say that my greatest strength is that I am able to meet targets and priorities. This is because I want to finish everything that is given to me to show that I am capable of doing my tasks on time and as good as possible and to be seen as someone responsible. I also have a belief that doing something as soon as possible and ensuring that it is done as good as possible will eventually turn into a habit that will be useful when I’m already working. On the other hand, I think that my greatest weakness is that I am unable to clearly and effectively express myself. I know that communication is a big factor, especially when working in teams, but because of my personality of not being good around people, sometimes, I am unable to communicate my opinions and thoughts properly. To tell the truth, I already had an idea of what my results are going to be, therefore I am only a bit surprised. This is because I am trying to constantly improve my work habits, especially my weaknesses as I know that my weaknesses will somewhat be of a hindrance in doing my tasks and responsibilities.
In other people’s opinion of me, they gave me high ratings in holding myself accountable for my responsibilities, being able to communicate clearly and effectively, and being able to openly share my thoughts and feelings. I was really surprised when I saw that they said that I am able to clearly communicate since it is one of my weakness in my self-evaluation. Mostly all of their analysis of me is similar to my analysis of myself. Their analysis of me is better than I expected and some ratings they gave are higher than what I gave myself, which gives me the thought that I am better than what I think I am.
360° assessment is important in the workplace because it gives employees insight of what their co-workers think of their performance in the company as well as their work habit and personalities, like if they are approachable or not. Knowing what others think of your performance in the company can help you know your strengths and weaknesses, which could improve the way you do your work as you already know what should be worked on since it could have impacted other members negatively. Another importance in a 360° assessment is that employees can rate themselves of their performance. Because of this, employees are able to determine their own strengths and weaknesses, showing how much they know themselves. The more you know about your strength and weaknesses, the better you could improve.
In order to become an effective leader, you must first know your strengths and weaknesses in the company as this will give you an idea how to give a better performance by enhancing your strengths and improving your weaknesses. 360° assessment will be able to help since you and your co-workers will give analysis of your work habits and performance, as stated above. Having an analysis would help explain the reason of how you are performing. Although they are judging you based on your personality and performance, this will help you improve since they are giving constructive criticism in order for you to do better, not to point out your faults and weaknesses.

Case Study: The 30-Minute Habit That Transformed Kelly’s Blog
Today on the blog we have a case study from one of our readers. Or rather one of our podcast listeners, as it was a tip in a particular podcast that spurred on today’s guest author to make some significant changes to her blog over the course of a year. I hope you enjoy Kelly Dunning’s story, and her insights and advice on how she has made the most of one simple habit to banish the guilt of not posting and rediscover her passion for her travel blog Global-Goose.com.
My blog used to make me feel sad and discouraged.
Why?
I loved working on it, but I rarely ever got around to it. I’m a full-time freelance writer with a travel blog as a side project. I spend a lot of time on the road. Like many bloggers out there, my blog is often sidelined by my full-time job and other commitments.
By the time I finished my freelance work at the end of the day, I was tired and wanted to get away from the keyboard.
I made this excuse for years, and while I always got my freelance writing work done my blog was embarrassingly neglected. Sometimes I wouldn’t write a post for weeks, and if I did it would be a small one just to remove the guilt of not posting.
This made me feel awful. I’d started the blog as a passion project. Traveling was the pivotal decision that changed my life.
When I hit the road for the first time, I felt so empowered and excited. I started my travel blog because I found a love for traveling that I wanted to share with others. Unfortunately, I wasn’t doing it as much as I wanted to because I couldn’t find the time. (At least, that’s what I told myself.)
I never struggled to think of things to write about. In my head I had an almost infinite list of blog posts I wanted to write. I just wasn’t making time to write them.
Finally, after a lot of stress and procrastination, I found myself in a rare moment of honest self-reflection. I realized I was just making excuses. Have you ever heard the saying, “If you argue for your limitations, then surely they are yours”? I was definitely guilty of arguing for my own limitations.
I had to get around this “limitation”, and figure out how I could write for my own blog in my spare time after writing all day as a full-time job.
One simple thing completely changed blogging for me.
I decided to spend 30 minutes on my blog every day, before my workday even began. Yup, just 30 minutes. I figured it was small, but it was better than nothing.
That was a year ago, and what a difference it has made.
“It’s Just What I Do”
The idea of a 30 minute per day blogging habit was inspired by one of Darren’s ProBlogger podcasts – “3 Productivity Tips to Help You Build Healthy Habits.” Darren says that when he’s forming a good habit he tells himself, “That’s just what I do.” There’s something very powerful about this. It works as a convincing mantra to help you instil a habit until it becomes something you do without even thinking about it.
So, I started setting a timer first thing in the morning and working on the blog for 30 minutes. Now it’s just what I do.
I started this habit in November 2016, and I’ve kept it up ever since – a full year now. This habit has allowed me to transform my travel blog, and I’ve published more high-quality posts than I ever had before.
Why This Works For Me
Working on my blog every morning for 30 minutes a day has been an effective strategy for me because:
It’s a small amount of time that I could always squeeze in, no matter how busy my day was. That’s 3.5 hours per week (14 hours per month) of steady work – certainly more than I was doing before.
I would have never been able to carve a 3.5 hour chunk out of my weekly schedule. But 30 minutes per day is always possible. I do it first thing, before any other distractions creep in and take over.
With a 30-minute timer ticking down, I use my morning blog time very efficiently and get a lot done in a short amount of time.
Since I’m working on my blog a little bit every day, it’s often on my mind and I think of ideas and ways to improve it around the clock.
I often find I keep working once the timer rings because I’m engaged in what I’m doing, and want to keep going until I finish that particular task.
Working on the blog for 30 minutes in the morning also gets my creative juices flowing, makes my other writing better, and puts me in a great mood.
Beginning with a solid 30-minute session of working on the blog means I’ve already accomplished something I’ve set my mind to before I even start my workday. This boosts my confidence, and gives me a great start to the day.
How Has It Made a Difference?
Thirty minutes a day may not seem like much. But it has made a huge difference to my blog over the past year. Looking back on the past 12 months, this is what I’ve achieved:
Published 51 blog posts, which is almost one a week. I’ve never managed to maintain the habit of blogging consistently for that long before. And many of these have been long, in-depth, evergreen posts.
Updated/improved/fixed errors in countless other posts. I notice these areas for improvement more often because I’m looking at my blog every day.
Improved the quality of my blog posts due to the increased practice.
Completed a 23,000-word travel guide for my website that I started writing years ago but never finished.
Thought about the “Why?” of my blog so I can define exactly how I want to help readers, and then implemented the changes.
Increased my Facebook page fans by 1,269.
Increased my Twitter followers by 1,570.
Increased my blog traffic by 24% (comparing October 2016 to October 2017).
Created a user-friendly “Start Here” page to organise my content and help readers find what they’re looking for.
Started and maintained a Pinterest Account, and designed beautiful pins to promote my posts.
Made a page and a Google Form for guest post submissions, and worked with guest authors to create blog posts.
Wrote several guest posts that were published on relevant websites in my niche.
I’m not saying this is miraculous. Some blogs have certainly grown faster than mine. But I’m proud of what I’ve  achieved in the past year because without this simple habit I wouldn’t have done nearly this much.
Yes, I could have done a lot more if I’d been working on my blog full-time. But that just wasn’t realistic for me with my full time job. With this habit, I could make it work around my other commitments.
I work on a blog post nearly every day, and it usually takes me several days to to complete one from start to finish. Sometimes it takes a while because I’ve created some long and in-depth guides that are 3,000-5,000 words long. (I’ve learned that juicy, detailed and helpful blog posts give the best experience for my readers, so that’s what I’ve been focusing on.)
One of the most important differences is the way I feel about my blog. Instead of making me feel embarrassed, futile and frustrated, my blog makes me so happy right now. This habit means my blog is no longer a side project I feel guilty for neglecting, but rather an active, thriving blog with a steadily growing readership. Every day when I get up in the morning, I’m excited to work on it.
A couple of weeks ago one of my readers emailed to let me know that one of my posts had been incredibly helpful for them, and was the inspiration for them to travel abroad for the first time. Knowing I made a profound positive impact on someone’s life is such a rewarding feeling.
Plus, my blog now serves as a much better showcase of my writing skills, and is a more effective portfolio when applying for freelance writing jobs. I’ve been getting more and better writing projects in the past year, and I think there’s a direct correlation.
What If I Miss a Day?
Now before you assume I’m some kind of super-woman, I admit I don’t do this perfectly. I don’t always achieve the 30 minutes every day. Sometimes I wake up late. Sometimes I’m not feeling well. Sometimes I’m lazy. And sometimes I’m sleeping under the stars in the Australian outback with no computer.
But the habit is ingrained now, so if I miss one day I’m usually right back on it the next morning. After all, it’s just what I do. I’ve decided that it’s unrealistic to expect I won’t miss a day every now and then. That’s fine with me. But I make sure that missing days is an exception and doesn’t happen that often.
I’ve found that achieving success when working towards a long-term goal (like building an awesome blog) depends more on cumulative habits than what you do on any given day. It’s kind of like living a healthy lifestyle. If you have a long-term habit of exercising regularly, and you eat healthy food on most days, treating yourself to a double-fudge brownie every now and then won’t make too much of a difference because it’s the exception rather than the norm.
How I Make The Most of My 30 Minutes a Day
I’m often amazed at how long 30 minutes can actually feel. When I’m focused, I can get a surprising amount of work done in this time. I can usually write 600-800 words in a morning session. Then, when I finish a post, I use the next couple of 30-minute sessions to work on uploading to WordPress, formatting, adding images, publishing, promoting on social media and all other follow-up actions.
Here’s how I make my 30 minutes really count:
I put my phone away so I’m not distracted. If I whittle away the 30 minutes checking Facebook notifications, I won’t get another chance to work on my blog until the following day.
I listen to classical music on my headphones because it tunes everything out and helps me stay focused.
I use Trello to organise everything I’m working on for the blog. I have separate columns for Blog Post Ideas, Blog Posts in Progress, Miscellaneous Tasks to Complete for the Blog, etc. It helps me see the big picture and figure out what needs to be done next.
I have at least two different blog posts on the go at any given time, so if I’m not feeling inspired to write about a particular topic that morning or if I hit a block, I can spend the time working on something else.
I have other blog-related tasks for the days when I want to take a break from writing. This includes scheduling social media, uploading blog posts, adding photos, creating Pinterest graphics, reaching out to influencers, etc.
This simple habit has helped my blogging enormously, and might help you if you’re busy and struggling to find time to blog.
I challenge you to find 30 minutes in your day to work on your blog, whether it’s in the morning like me, at the end of the day, or whenever works for you. It may not seem like a lot, but it really does make a difference.
