something that’s always irked me is the way the writers decided to change one of the main plot points in dance of the dragons to gain sympathy points for alicent.

i love the show, don’t get me wrong. but holy fuck do i feel like drowning myself every time i see ppl go “omg alicent is such a misunderstood character 🥺”, “she’s has every right to protect herself and her kids 🥺” literally shut the fuck up.

the real alicent is not a victim, far from it actually.

and viserys especially didn’t prey on her.

the real alicent is a cunning and power hungry women just like her father. everything she does is for power (keeping up with the hightower traditions).

in the books, she’s 18-19 when she marries viserys who’s 29 at the time and rhaenyra is 9 years old.

she is literally the textbook definition of evil stepmother. she spread rumors of rhaenyra (in 111 a.c) and daemon and criston when rhae was 14 and daemon and criston were 30 and alicent was around 24.

they could have taken her character in so many different ways but instead chose the worst way possible. i get that for the show they had to make some changes, but how fucking hard is it for you to follow the source material?

she was turned into this flimsy character when in reality she’s one of the biggest characters in fire and blood. it’s all bc of her and her greed that the dance happens and in hindsight is the beginning of house targaryens fall.

if i’m being honest, i kinda like book alicent more than show alicent. she was the perfect villain, but in the shows she just there imo.

i had zero sympathy for her when i was reading the books and i’ll continue to have zero sympathy for her in the show.

cant wait for her to lose everything bc of her own actions.

I am so intensely scared that I feel nauseous, pray for me

as far as finals go, this one wasn’t half bad. the action parts were done pretty well. it’s nice that we got to see carina delivering one last baby on the show (in a firefighter suit no less). the joy that was radiating from her whenever she thought about being pregnant and her sharing this happiness with maya after she told her the news was everything after all they’ve been through these past two/three years.

personally, i prefer tv shows to end without substantial flash forwards as i find it gives a certain finality to the ending that i’d rather not have and it more often than not feels unearned. so, to me, everything that happened in the timeline after vic and travis had left is only a suggestion. (also the haircuts were so incredibly bad that it can’t possibly be real)

my feelings towards this show are weird and complex. i love it but i also hate it. i’ll miss it but i also won’t. it all comes down to station 19 having many high highs but just as many low lows. and yet, there was always something that had me coming back to the show, and i’m glad i did.

so long, 19.

#i prefer my headcanons to be compliant with canon rather than go against it but it is what it is #obviously there are many things that i would have liked to see happen with maya and carina but that’s the case for most episodes #at least this time it wasn’t because they prioritized literally every other couple over them #the writers ignoring the battalion chief title ever since the last one died on the boat was one of the worst decisions they have made #it could have been much more interesting and it would also give them the ability to uplift more characters #maya x carina #maya bishop #carina deluca #station 19 #station 19 spoilers

Something something something the processing of film editing means every piece of 1D footage used was a deliberate choice to tell the story Louis wants to tell, both to punctuate what he is narrating and also to tell its own visual story.

#the worst part of editing is 100% cataloguing every fucking part of the raw footage you’re gonna use #I cannot emphasize how fucking awful and time consuming that job is #but also how much that goes into picking what footage is used #ESPECIALLY in a documentary where you’re using (essentially) archival footage #idk who edited the film but Charlie didn’t shoot the 1D footage #no one working on this film did I’m guessing #which means it HAD to be watched #it HAD to be watched IN ITS ENTIRETY #and decisions were made to pick out #the footage from literally raw fucking footage - completely unedited - was chosen

Something that keeps nagging at me is, why did Jon continue to take statements?

I’m not talking about season four. In episode 120 it is revealed that Jon gets dreams of the statements, and in episode 114, Daisy asks about his shirt, meaning the dreams weren’t just happening during the coma. (Also 120 states that he’s had these dreams before)

And look, I know Jon loves trying to deny things, he spent the entirety of season 1 doing just that, but he’s not stupid; no one would think “hm, I’ve been getting dreams of the live statements, where I watch them live through their trauma again and I’m turning into something not quite human, probably just a coincidence. Nothing to worry about.” So why does he continue to take live statements?

Because even if Jon doesn’t know that the other person shares the dream, why would he want to keep dreaming them? Because he enjoys it. He’s not suddenly more “monstrous” in season 4, taking strangers statements, it wasn’t like he suddenly started making these selfish decisions, he already was.

I’ve seen a lot of people say that Jon doesn’t become an avatar until season 4, but, to me, he already was one, his choice in episode 121 is more about becoming the Archivist not an avatar of the Eye. Because in season 3 he can already compel people, he can already Know things, and he is already enjoying people’s fear. He plainly tells Gerry that he likes compelling people.

So, I think, Jon enjoys taking peoples statements, and he enjoys watching their dreams, because he doesn’t have a choice. Jon admits that he thinks he’s losing himself to the Eye:

“ARCHIVIST

Avatars! But they end up getting these abilities, and they lose a lot of their self. Sometimes all of it.

GEORGIE

And you think… that’s what’s happening to you?

ARCHIVIST

Yes. Yes. The Institute serves one of these beings.”

The Eye took a part of him, and now he has to enjoy others’ suffering, he still feels immense guilt for his actions, but as Helen said “When has your guilt, or your sadness, or your hand-wringing ever actually stopped you from doing what it wants?”

#the magnus archives #jonathan sims #my post #I don’t think this makes Jon a worse person or anything #because as much as I love him he makes bad harmful selfish decisions sometimes #but I also can’t really blame him because I don’t think anyone else could do better certainly not anyone in the show #and I don’t think he should be condemned for having moments of weakness #yes it causes harm and that should be acknowledged but so should the circumstances that led him to it #he likes to compel people because it’s something he can control and makes him feel less powerless #if Jon wasn’t in literally the worst situation in the show I don’t think he’d ever choose to do anything purposely harmful #but as it is he caves to desires he wished he didn’t have even if it means he’s causing harm to others #the only reason season 4 is so much worse is that he can’t feign ignorance about taking statements #in previous seasons it was people specifically coming to make a statement or Avatars that wished him harm #the only exceptions were Georgie and Gerry but he asked them both before taking their statements #but season 4 he is actively hunting people and forcefully taking their statements #I also think after Naomii Herne if he had tried to leave the statement giver alone Elias would have just made him stay #telling him not to leave them alone with institute property or something
