I LOVE Excel! I took an Excel class during University and I've never stopped using or learning about it since. During my summer internship, I would literally use Excel functions and macros for hours every single day. Even if you don't want to be an Excel fanatic, learning a few basic functions will make your life easier (and even impress a few managers along the way!).

I've outlined below some of the most useful Excel functions to learn. Some of these functions are very basic but can make a huge difference. These functions save time, automate procedures, and make your life easier! And if you need some help on how to learn them, I've listed some helpful resources to get you started. With all of us social distancing at home, now is as good of a time as any to add a skill to your resume. 

Excel Functions to Know:

SUM: returns sum of cells selected

SUMPRODUCT: multiplies ranges or arrays together and returns the sum of product

IF: return one value for a TRUE result and another for a FALSE result

SUMIF: returns the sum of cells if the cell meets a single condition

AVERAGEIF: computes the average of the numbers in a range that meets a certain criteria

VLOOKUP: lookup and retrieve data from a specific column in a table can be exact or approximate match

LEFT: returns a given number of characters from the left side of text string

RIGHT: returns a given number of characters from the right side of text string

CONCATENATE: joins the text of cells together and returns the joined text in one cell

LENGTH: returns the given number of characters in a text

Resources:

Excel Jet: Very useful as a type of Excel dictionary to look up syntax and specific formulas you don't know

Excel Easy: almost like on online textbook for Excel (great resource for those who have no knowledge of Excel at all!)

Udemy: paid excel course with lots of videos, assignments, and downloadable resources

Coursera: self-paced learning option, quizzes and assignments, and a course certificate

Excel Youtube Course by Technology for Teachers and Students

4/30 days of french / jours de français

Please correct any errors you catch! wrote this one while tired so there might be a bunch of errors sprinkled throughout

Salut! Je ne peux pas croire que c'est le 4ème jour de mes écrits français! Aujourd’hui était un jour tranquille. Je suis très fatiguée parce que j'ai à peine dormi la nuit dernière. Ce soir, j’irai me coucher très tôt parce que j’ai beaucoup à faire demain. J’ai voulu aller à la plage demain, mais le temps sera mauvais donc je resterai chez moi. Je dois faire mes tâches ménagères et lire beaucoup de documents pour mes cours. Je voudrais faire une longue marche s’il ne fait trop mauvais demain. Plus tôt aujourd’hui, j’ai fini la deuxième saison de « Never Have I Ever » et j’ai beaucoup aimé ça! Plus tard, je reverrai le premier épisode de « Outer Banks » puisque la deuxième saison sort dans 2 jours et j’ai oublié la plupart. J’ai besoin de pratiquer des conjugations moins courantes comme plus-que-parfait donc je n’oublie pas mais je ne sais pas comment l'intégrer dans ces écrits. J'essaierai peut-être demain. Merci d'avoir lu!

Hello! I cannot believe it is the 4th days of my French writing! Today was a calm day. I am very tired because I barely slept last night. Tonight, I'm going to sleep very early because I have a lot to do tomorrow. I wanted to go to the beach tomorrow, but the weather is going to be bad so I will stay at home. I have to do my household tasks and read a lot of documents/paperwork for my classes. I want to take a long walk if it isn't too bad out tomorrow. Earlier today, I finished the second season of "Never Have I Ever" and I liked it a lot! Later, I am going to rewatch the first episode of "Outer Banks" because the second season comes out in 2 days and I forgot most of it. I need to practice less common conjugations like plus-que-parfait so I don't forget but I don't know hoe to integrate it in these writings. Maybe I will try tomorrow. Thanks for reading!

☁️ best tips for online studying

how to self motivate & learn on your own when your university goes online 

☁️ map out your entire course(s)

make a list of everything you need to know by the end of the term.

add HOW you will learn each outcome (textbook sections, online lecture videos e.t.c.).

make a list of all assignments you need to complete and their due dates.

☁️ make a longterm plan

add all important dates to a calendar. I personally prefer to put them on my phone and set alerts. 

make your own due-dates of when you will have outcomes learned by, based on when you will have to understand those concepts to complete assignments and assessments.

☁️ set up a work-only space

set up an area in your home that is for study/work only! make this a place where you’re able to focus without distraction.

☁️ mimic a class schedule

attend any live online classes as they occur

take notes from any pre-recorded lectures when you would usually have that lecture in a day

OR: make your own class schedule with the same number of hours per course that you had during the regular semester

keeping to a regular schedule ensures you’re on track and keeping up

☁️ ask for help!

don’t be afraid to contact your instructors and TAs!

Online classes, round 3!

This term I've decided to go listen my classes once a week to my grandma's house, so we make each other company for a bit (don't worry, I'm wearing a mask and taking care of the measures). It's a small way to combat solitude in this pandemic!

Classes are similar to last term except that I now have technical problems that make attending to class impossible, yay! The problems are not my fault (I checked my cookies, WiFi, etc) but my unis. Let's hope they solve them soon, no?

Which do you prefer? Handwritten notes or digital notes? Writing digitally allows you to make mistakes and try out different things without consequence, but handwriting your notes gives you the instant gratification of holding them in your hands. But at the same time, digital notes saves paper and saves the environment.
