It's just occurred to me that in the previous episode when Im Sol was drunk and crying I just assumed it was because Sunjae was dead, but she had already fixed things at that point so she was crying because he doesn't know her now. THEY FOOLED ME!

Marissa stealing her own daughter's body is a bit kinder than stealing her granddaughter's body and then using that body to murder her daughter while the poor woman thinks her daughter is killing her.

Envisioning some poor Fittes employee dredging what's left of a dead kid out of the sewer, washing 100 years of gunk off it, and painstakingly wiring the pieces together only to present this rare find to their boss and it calls her a bitch until she throws it in the trash. i love that zane is the guy to suggest word games, i don’t know why but it fits so well with his kind of humour

okay this moment where they all think they’re gonna get crushed under the rubble together... cole struggling to hold it knowing full well he can’t save his family, cole and kai looking at each other, jay saying it’s okay... it doesn’t feel like a fakeout death because it’s done from their perspective and shows how they react in such no-win situations. it’s also almost like they’ve kind of been expecting this to happen some day and they’ve just been lucky until now. lots to unpack.

that being said i feel like at this point they should have the power to go full on sicko mode with their elements, like cole should be able to go all glowy-eyed and save everyone. or maybe i just want them to go huge with their powers more often. probably that :P

wait is this not the first time they’ve had the chance to stop and talk to nya properly since she came back? shouldn’t this be a bigger moment? just thinking back to how nya was unconscious when they got her back, we never got a big emotional hug moment y’know?

ngl idk why lloyd is so adamant on trying to get harumi to see the light, after the oni trilogy and him getting beaten up by garmadon while trying to appeal to his good side, you’d think he wouldn’t have so much faith in her? idk i feel like lloyd was supposed to learn that seeing the best in people can sometimes hurt you and you have to let them go (and then maybe learn that it’s also a strength after being too distrustful of akita or vania for example), so this doesn’t really fit with that growth.

Rummaging around in Ep 14 this time, and we’ve ...

We’ve talked about the Porsche-Namphueng-Chay scene that closes out the show just before the end credits, specifically SET AGAINST the parallel Vegaspete + Macau post-credits scene, right?

RIGHT?

The way these two little families contrast each other? The artificial distance and utter creepiness of the Porsche-Namphueng-Chay scene vs. the warmth and inclusion of the Vegaspete + Macau scene?

Namphueng = Vegas. Porsche = Pete (NOT the first time we’ve seen this parallel, which has been threaded all through the show). Chay = Macau.

Both Namphueng and Vegas are damaged in some way, coming into the scene. Porsche initiates contact, opening the door to Namphueng’s secret garret to bring in her younger son and allow her to meet Chay, the same way Pete opens the curtains in Vegas’s hospital room to let the light from outside in. But from there, everything falls apart, down parallel but separate paths. Namphueng’s been disengaged for years and that doesn’t change here – there’s no sudden awakening from her on meeting her children - while Vegas had life-threatening injuries that he nevertheless appears to be recovering from, on his way back to life, however gently he may need to be treated temporarily. Porsche works repeatedly in a largely futile attempt to engage his mother, who never speaks or reaches out to either of her children and seems to just endure their physical encroachment when they both hug her, while Vegas immediately responds to Pete and then proceeds to initiate the most real, most honest discussion they’ve probably ever had, leading to a kiss that reaffirms their emotional bond, then tells him “come here” to get Pete into his lap where he can have increased physical contact with him. Chay – however much he wants his mom - has to be encouraged by Porsche to actually initiate physical contact with her, while Macau verbally insinuates himself into the VegasPete interaction, then physically grabs Pete by the shoulders, then plops down on the bed and crawls up behind Pete to also crowd into Vegas’s lap and join the growing cuddle pile. Porsche and Chay kneel on the floor at either side of Namphueng, while Pete and Macau sit and then lie on Vegas’s bed, eventually crawling into his lap. Vegas is CLEARLY in cuddle heaven, smiling and proceeding to smooch on Macau’s head and Pete’s dimple as they snuggle into him, in contrast to Namphueng’s blank and - what looks to me to be - increasingly uncomfortable stare into the distance as both her sons try to hug her. The entire tableau with Namphueng and her sons is CLEARLY strained and awkward and uncomfortable, in direct contrast to the Vegaspete + Macau scene, which yes, includes Pete being awkward about PDA with Vegas when Macau sticks his big teenaged nose in, but which ends with Vegas literally enfolding both of them into his arms as Macau physically gloms onto Pete and Pete wiggles deeper into Vegas’s lap.

Submitted: These two scenes are INTENTIONAL parallels and deliberately contrast each other. They’re designed to make us incredibly uneasy about Porsche and Chay re-engaging with their mother and whatever family dynamics surround that, while at the same time trying to reassure us that VegasPete + Macau, whatever bumps in the road they may face going forward, are a fundamentally solid and potentially healthier relationship constellation than the one we just saw immediately pre-credits.

I … I really want to know who the VegasPete stan was amongst TPTB, because they really seemed to want us to get that these guys are ultimately going to be OK, whether we get an S2 etc. that lets us see how they get there.

Also, TPTB appears to want us to understand that Porsche and anything surrounding him, particularly his family relationships, are really really NOT ok as of the end of S1.

Also, the cuts with what's going on in Rose's city with this voiceover is just really nice storytelling.

Well, if you're after people who are creating grotesque things and trying to play god... whelp, yeah, yeah, I guess Ed fits into that

Hughes put a tail on Ed to *protect* him? Actually... that's not a bad idea. Lt. Col. Dad is pretty smart.

Poor Rose. I see she's still quothing Ed though.

Look at Ed, growing and learning things. "I can't steal your stone. You use it to help people. And they should keep getting that help." Could he not ask Marcoh for help? Oh wait, he must bear all the wait of the world on his shoulders and do it all by himself with no help at all because he is the Ed, the drama queen protagonist. Whoops, sorry. I forgot. Still, good for him.

Actually, with Al there, it probably wouldn't matter whether or not Marcoh had legs. He could surely carry him.

I think the credit theme changed too.

Informal Rose is Lion 2020 “liveblog” (I don’t liveblog and I might not say a lot). Going to go through the series at whatever pace it takes and point out in every scene how Lion’s behavior is explained because he’s secretly Rose astral projecting under the cut. If there’s a lot of Lion in an ep I’ll split the post up.

Episode 10: Steven’s Lion Part 1

The Gems are out here to stop the Desert Glass gem from building Hogwarts and ditch baby Steven on a sand dune. Steven pulls up his shirt, exposing his gem, and, ding, Lion catches sight of him. This is either Rose astral projecting from the gem to Lion, Rose already possessing Lion and spotting the gem, or Lion himself recognizing the gem.

Lion comes over, he is glowing, Steven is scared.

Then Lion falls asleep.

Then he wakes up and Steven realizes he is soft and cuddly and very tame. He declares them best buds!

I don’t know if this really holds any weight but I’ve said before that I think Lion sleeping might be related. He acts like Rose a lot of the time in the series, but Steven tends to be asleep when astral projecting, cats sleep a lot, idk. The glowing eye thing doesn’t happen so often and may or may not signify the body swap. In Buddy’s Book we learn Rose used to have several tame lions. We only see Lion’s nose onscreen briefly, but the implication right now is that he was one of those lions, died, and Rose revived him a la Lars. Hence his tame behavior and cuddliness. Lion’s easygoing side is his real personality, the intense side is Rose. Much like Lars in The New Lars as well, I think Rose is also using his body now that she lacks a physical form of her own. Or something. Anyway, Steven compliments Lion and tells him how he always wanted an animal friend. 

Lion hears/senses an incoming explosion from the CGs’ battle with the Desert Glass, and pins Steven down so he won’t blow away. Steven thinks it’s a sign Lion loves him.

“But I guess fate had other plans for Steven Universe...”

 “and his best friend Lion”

SU goes on to tease us with that location pre-explosion in the background of Buddy’s Book, in the plans on the Moon Base...it’s like the chest in that way.

Steven and Lion dig themselves out of the sand and Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl walk up, bickering. Lion’s eyes start glowing again. Steven has a great idea. 

Lion watches them walk away to take the warp, then follows them home by teleporting himself outside the house and scratching at the door until someone lets him in.

Lion obviously knows where they live, because he’s Rose. Wouldn’t have to take the warp pad, track/follow them with magic, or anything fancy like that. He could probably even guess that Amethyst would take a nap instead of bubbling the dangerous corrupted gem. Maybe he even wanted the desert glass back because he’d been living in the castle for at least the past 14 years being a bad mom. Remember this was all a mystery in episode 10, but now we know that Lars and Lion have the same superpowers, and GPS is not one of them.

The running gag where Steven thinks Lion cares about him when Lion clearly doesn’t continues...which is super cute when he’s just a cat because that’s how cats are, but also extremely depressing upon rewatch if it’s his secret ghost mom.

Steven stops doing what he came here to do and tries to get Lion to do family bonding activities with him. 

“Catch me I’ll die!”

Lion makes a great cat, a decent magical familiar, worst parent.

Oh yeah he tries to play catch with Lion. Kind of like in Storm in the Room when he’s fantasizing about what it would be like to have a loving parent who wants to hang out with him

Steven even shows him how to do it. Lion is disgusted. 

You know who else hates play and balls? Rose Quartz, who was a juggler and chafed in her role, who traumatized her first childhood “playmate” and abandoned the second in a garden 1,000 years before she even left home! She can be playful, sure, but this is very much the opposite of her thing.
