I don’t like minimizing the importance and gravity of Laios and Toshiro’s fight into just being a childish squabble, even if to a degree it is framed that way, because to both of them it has a lot of personal significance and emotional weight and runs very deep to their characters… The fight isn’t nothing it’s a LOT, they made up but it’s not something easy to express and to get over for either of them which makes it all the more meaningful! I’m on both sides but there very much are sides, there’s no "they’re both having a ball, Toshiro and Laios hand in hand yay" side to the fight, that comes after
The fight with Toshiro WAS very scary to Laios, almost existentially so, but it’s moreso the "I thought I’d made a friend!!" bit and my god. My god actually
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like it’s not "just" about oh his friend liking him less than he thought, THAT IS SO MUCH. It’s a bond he thought he had being a lie it’s all the time and moments spent together either being a lie from his perspective or marred now looking back. It’s not only being upset at Toshiro for lying but upset at himself that he’s so easy to fool, it’s being upset that there’s something so wrong with you that you can’t even tell if your "close buddy" even actually likes you or not, it’s like. Holding my head. He can’t trust his own vision of events that happened do you see. There’s always this film of distrust that it could be a lie that should be there when he interacts with people there’s always this sense of cloak and dagger to expect backstabs out of nowhere because you CAN’T see it coming you CAN’T you CAN’T there’s something about you which makes it impossible so you CAN’T-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s so scared of not being able to read people. He knows it’s a weak spot he has, he’s always known. All of these bits are centered around social expectations and betrayals, the assumption that he doesn’t belong either in society or with other humans.
And Laios’ level of awareness is actually sort of complex to analyze, but it’s there, there’s how out of him and Falin he was the one sensitive to the ~aura of hatred~ he felt from the townspeople, there’s of course his nightmares whispering to him about the mocking looks, and how yeah actually he realizes that his gold stripper coworker was taking advantage of him. There’s of course the Winged Lion speech about his trauma and how he fundamentally mistrusts/dislikes humans to some deep seated degree, this distrust that he still keeps under control always. There’s how pre-canon he often wanted to suggest eating monsters but never worked up the courage to bring it up with the others. There’s how he gets across as stoic when he isn’t being enthusiastic…… We don’t know how aware and wary he is exactly in the moment but we do know he has some anxiety around social stuff, and looking back he does notice and aughh augh, the sense you have to hide yourself to not get hurt and be on your guard and shit and.
When you don’t know what to look out for and when to look out for it, the general ‘common sense’ of not always trusting people or noticing when someone’s messing with you becomes hypervigilance in social settings
Tumblr media
"Man they really know what you hate huh". Being socially unaware literally plagues him, he knows, he knows it so well.
It’s so quick that it’s almost hard to digest how literal and blatant Laios summoning his monster to crush all the people who’ve hurt him is. His literal go-to coping mechanism for comfort in his literal monster-induced emotionally intense nightmares, saving him by taking away the upsetting element (the humans)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Monsters are his coping fantasy, where they can whisk him away from humanity, all the hurt it’s caused him and its arbitrary rules" with the subtlety of a brick. Monsters are his comfort safe zone "because they kill humans" yes but no it’s because he pits them as the guardians against humans who to him are in the role of the agressors. To him they represent freedom from the shackles of what it means to be part of humanity, a fundamentally social species

something so extremely loser-core about not one single ghost being present when Cap died. Like they could have known how he died all 80 years ago but somehow literally all of them missed it😭

Also not only did Mina make the documents, she backed them up! Dracula BURNED THEM. But she had made them in triplicate.
She is always one step ahead. Like a chess master.
My girl was doing cartwheels around that vampire fool so hard that his only move was to give her nightmares on earth, and religious trauma in an attempt to stop her...
And Mina STILL ended up doing cartwheels around stupid Dracula even with the host mark on her forehead via backing up documents, and turning him into a fucking gps to guide everyone so they could turn him into ribbons.

I think I underestimated how cool it is that Little House books are a "woman remembers her childhood" children's classic by an author from a working-class and rural background. Most working-class books of the genre have urban settings, and most rural girlhood classics come from a family that's in a fairly stable community--maybe not rich, but comfortable enough that they don't have to worry about whether they'll make it through a winter.
Laura Ingalls grew up dirt poor in a family that knew how to grow or build or hunt or make everything that they needed, because they had to. Yet when she grew up, she got into a position where she could publish about it. Which is pretty astounding, because people in her situation are usually too busy doing the farmwork to write about it--they don't have connections to the publishing industry. Yet she did, so we get to hear from someone who knows that farm and small-town setting intimately, and not because she grew up and and ran off to the city as soon as she could escape, but because she still lives it and loves it and advocates for it.
She knows the details of that life and loves it. Like, she genuinely cares about raising the chickens, not as a housewife's hobby, but as an important source of meat, eggs and money for the family. It's grounded, earthy, sensible, but also romantic, because she while she's doing farm work or house work she's noticing the little moments of beauty or thinking about the big issues of life. But it took a long series of coincidences to get this ordinary farm wife into a position of wanting to write, being able to write, and having a national audience for her writing, so I just want to appreciate how amazing it is that it happened.

Luz only wanted to be understood.
She was never understood in the Human Realm. She was always too weird (read: neurodivergent) to fit in. She escaped into fantasy and fandom and imagining magical worlds where she belonged.
And she found one. And weirdos stick together. And it had to be perfect there.
But it wasn’t. She was still an outcast. She still couldn’t do magic like anyone else. And her attempts to be a witch only got people hurt. Eda was captured, the portal destroyed, Belos found the Collector and her friends ended up stuck away from their home. And so she thought that the only way to help them was to isolate herself, to torture herself, because her attempts for happiness only hurt others, so she had to be miserable and alone.
But she doesn’t. Because she never wanted people to get hurt. Because Belos would’ve used someone else anyway. Because the bonds she made were real and their lives were so much better because they had Luz the Human.
But she doesn’t realize it, and she feels so alone, and she feels like no one understands her.
The person that she’s closest to is her worst enemy. Another lost human trying to get home. Another human who hurt everyone trying to get home. Another human who will never be understood.
And here’s her mom, who clearly hates the Boiling Isles. She’s pretending she doesn’t because Luz dragged her here, it’s Luz’s fault that she’s here. It’s Luz’s fault that her wonderful mom was stuck with a hopeless daughter.
And then she realizes that Camila is just like her. She’s nerdy, she was bullied, she’s just as weird (READ: NEURODIVERGENT) as Luz. And she understands Luz, because she’s gone through everything that she has. And her friends understand her, because they’ve gone through everything that she has. The Half-A-Witch and the Family Strife and the Feeling Used and the Used by Belos and all those who are separated from their home. Luz is understood because she belongs.
And then she gets a sick-ass snakeshifter.
