With the odd but delightful upsurgence of people finding The Beetle by Richard Marsh-- a book I read in a course on British Imperialism and Literature and fell instantly in love with, but feel weird recommending to people for various reasons-- I submit the following

An Interview

Me: Heeey, Richard Marsh, interesting story you got there. Really cool gender stuff. One question. Can you do it without all the racism? Marsh: What? No. No, the racism is key. The racism is definitely necessary. Me: ...yeah, okay. I get it, you’re British and it's Empire time. But can't we scale back the Orientalism JUST a little? I mean, you’ve got these sections that could be read as a *critique* of Imperialism, but then… Marsh: It is imperative that the Beetle, in human form described at its full power as an extremely attractive, hypnotic, powerful woman who can take advantage of men– Imagine! once powerful, virile men, taken advantage of by the lesser sex, captured in their sex and murder dungeon; don't worry I'm going to describe this intimately–  Me: Yeah, we’ve all read She– Marsh: –that this “Beetle” be a foreign woman whose murder leads to an INFECTION THAT INVADES ENGLAND TO UPSET GENDER ROLES NILLY-WILLY– Me: To be honest, Richie, the way you write the other characters it seems like the “upsetting gender roles” call is coming from inside the house, if you just– Marsh: CAUSING POOR DEFENSELESS MEN WHO SHOW ANY SIGN OF WEAKNESS TO FALL UNDER ITS WEIRDLY ANDROGYNOUS SWAY! INNOCENT YOUNG ‘ANGEL OF THE HOUSE’ TYPE WOMEN START CROSS-DRESSING! POWERFUL MALE POLITICIANS FALL TO THEIR KNEES AND WEEP! BEHOLD THE TERROR! Me:... Marsh:... Marsh:...BE AFRAID!!! IT'S TERRIFYING! Me: ….Are we sure it's fear motivating this? Sorry, are we sure it's fear *of this* motivating it?  Marsh: SO SCARY!! OOOOOO YOU'RE SUPER SCARED! Hahaha…I mean just IMAGINE…someone forcing you out of the strict gender and societal roles you were born into 👀…someone who has no stake in said roles…👀 Me: Yeah, so we're marking “fetishization” AND “demonification” of the Other off on our bingo board Marsh: So there's this scientist who’s madly romantic and has (strangely-- may I even say queerly--) intense beef with the paragon of maleness character. Meanwhile his best friend (who he's not attracted to and who happens to be a woman) keeps trying to hint that they should marry so other guys stop hitting on her and– Me: …okay, this is just a mess. This is a mess, Richard. Do you see how this is a mess? Please.  Marsh: THERE'S A CARPET THAT EATS PEOPLE! WAIT, WAIT, MYSTERY CULTS! SHAPESHIFTING! BIOLOGICAL WARFARE! WAIT, I HAVE MORE–!

i think ppl saw 2019 to 2022-23 up until the gaming channel return as dan wanting to distance himself from the Dan And Phil branding? and i mean it's partly true, particularly in that dnp™️ were primarily for a teen audience (i know in spite of all the horniness but like tabinof was published with a children's book publisher) and dan wanted to include his much raunchier sense of humor as well as be "taken seriously" for things like his mental health book and the tv show stuff. but sometimes i think ppl saw that as dan like, de-valuing the impact of Dan And Phil when that couldn't be further from the truth ykwim? "the real ones? they know." like phil has always done his own thing alongside being part of Dan And Phil, but for dan, emotionally, he was still trying to establish his identity and not just like coming out as gay but just figuring out who the fuck he is! and once he found something he felt a true passion for, he went for it and is still going for it in his solo pursuits, but the gaming channel coming back as this BIG THING is still significant. i think part of the return (on dan's end) is like. fuck it man, if people aren't going to take him seriously either way, then they might as well have fun and be horny on their silly joint channel anyway

I wonder what clovers parents would think if they did know, like I’m assume there are still human problems and clovers parents seem to be the type of trashy people who would be xenophobic.

i dont think they would care all that much bc it doesnt matter WHAT clover is; just that they’re something they can use to keep their house clean and boss around. they would take clover back just to keep them and parade them around as a hero!

i dont wanna go tooo into the racism aspect bc. its not really my place to talk about being a minority bc im not. but i think they would be terrible people even without being racist

they believed gaylor should mean someone who interprets taylor’s music through a queer lens, and should not (necessarily) have anything to do with taylor’s sexuality.

anyway i just think it’s amusing to think about it in terms of the state of the anyone-but-karlie gaylor community. maybe some people out there feel the same sort of amusement

SOME (as in not all) jason fans will get mad at people for saying “let’s not make Mia’s trafficking trauma about the dude who tormented her about it” and start throwing around the “oh so you hate male survivors” bs

REAL REAL REAL REAL REAL !!!!! the thing is i dont mind the headcanon that jason had similar experiences to mia. i (mostly) dont even mind when people use those panels to compare their pasts and say that they could have had similar experiences

however. there is a very real problem when people will look at that scene and say "OMG! this must mean that jason has trafficking trauma!!!!" instead of looking at the character RIGHT THERE that has a bunch of very important arcs about her life as a survivor and her experiences and her trauma from it. and then when you say "hey lets make this scene about mia instead please" they'll say "oh so jason is worth less as a survivor just because hes not mia????" and its like. well no because one of them is a survivor in canon and on page and one of them is your headcanon. i feel like some people just read the line where jason was going over mias backstory and went "hm.... but what if this was about himself instead"

again. i dont think anyone is doing anything wrong by headcanoning him as a csa survivor. but when you use the panels with mia for evidence instead of just. talking about mia. it drives me insane and someday i WILL kill someone about it

i think something that is misconstrued is that ratio is always seen as abrasive and harsh. yes , he is a people displeaser and he is unflinching in his candour but there should also be emphasis on how he informs in soft tones and with room for questions if need be , because he seeks to educate and spread knowledge to those less fortunate and to those who simply wish to expand on what they already know. just take a look at the messages he sends trailblazer. so , i don't think he should be viewed as a coarse figure but instead , he's someone who filters out the nonsense and puts forth the purified truth.
