#lv fanfic challenge

It has been a mighty, mighty, minute since I've tried to host a fic writing challenge, but why not??? What's old is new again, and yadda yadda yadda. Announcing a new challenge: The Logan & Veronica: New Year, New Fic Writing Fest!

We’ll start writing in the first month of the year, and then posting the first week of February. New year! New fic! 

Posting Dates: Wednesday, February 1, 2023 through Tuesday, February 7, 2023

Fic! Fan art! Manips! Playlists! Headcanons! Lists of fic recommendations! We want it all!

To kickoff the first year of this challenge, I thought it'd be fun if we take inspiration from some of the fandom's greatest hits, that is, fics with the most amount of kudos over on AO3.

Please note: I have picked key elements of some of the most kudos'd fics EVER (according to AO3) to inspire these prompts. If you want to do an actual, explicit remix of one of these fics, it's fandom best practice to reach out to the author in advance. Any questions about that distinction? Just send me an ask or a message!

Most importantly: tag everything #2023 LV New Year in the first five tags so all those who love these two idiots can see and track the content. You can also post in the 2023 LV New Year challenge category on AO3.

No time to create? Boy, do I have a suggestion for you! Sometimes fics considered "old" by the fandom can drop off the radar. Why not take the time this week to dole out kudos and/or comments to some older but much loved fics?

Canon divergence, fics inspired by universes you've already created, long one-shots, new multichapters that incorporate each plot - all fic writing formats that are completely on the table!

Day 1: Market Fic - inspired by "A Strange New Story Every Time" by gyzym - Farmer's market? Specialty food store? Mini-market? So many markets...so many possibilities.

Day 2: Non-Linear Storytelling - inspired by "Slipstream" by @cheshirecatstrut. - Any way of telling a story where the events are not told in complete chronological order.

Day 3: Hurt/Comfort and/or Domesticity inspired by "With Me" by @bryrosea and "Same Old Song" by @susanmichelin - You can treat these as two separate prompts, or, as both of these fics do in an expert manner, incorporate them together

Day 4: Epistolary inspired by "Three Emails Sent Across Continents (And Possible Five Text Messages)" by Care and "Wingspan" by @theawkwardterrier - Journals, letters, texts, etc. They can provide the full text or simply feature as one component.

Day 5: Lawyer!Veronica inspired by "A Better Claim" by @best-laid-plaids - She spent all that time and energy on getting that degree - it seems a shame we fic writers don't put it to good use!

Day 6: "I love a man in uniform" inspired by "Metal Under Tension" by @machawicket - Not saying it has to be a military uniform...though that option is, of course, there.

Day 7: s1 canon fix-it or s1 canon divergence inspired by "Sometimes" by @mysilverylining and "Time, Make it Go Faster or Just Rewind" by @kmd0107 - We're all in agreement that s1 is the most complete season of this show, correct? That doesn't mean that the what-if possibilities are in any way limited, though!

hiii I just read all your judetrent fanfics and they were AMAZING! I was wondering if you can write one about a judetrent story where they broke things off quickly after one English camp where trent found out Jude was going to Real Madrid and they both thought that it was best for them to break up. But they later meet again at the LV fashion show (the one where Jude wore that suit jacket and trent got rows). And maybe they talk again to each other and things turn super spicy once they get into a really intense fight quickly. maybe a lil but of angst could be added? thank you and keep up with ur work!

Both Jude and Trent had been through a whirlwind of emotions when they parted ways after an England camp. The news of Jude's transfer to Real Madrid had felt like a punch to the gut for Trent. They both knew that long-distance relationships weren't easy, but the suddenness of their breakup had left them with a void that neither could fill.

Months passed, and the wounds hadn't fully healed when they found themselves at the LV fashion show in Paris. Trent's cornrows and Jude's striking suit jacket had turned heads, and they couldn't help but steal glances at each other from across the room. The tension between them was palpable.

Amidst the buzz of the fashion show, they finally came face to face. The room was pulsing with energy, but in that moment, it felt like it was just the two of them. Jude was the first to break the silence.

"Hey," he said, his voice laced with a mixture of surprise and longing. "It's been a while."

Trent's jaw clenched, and he couldn't hide the resentment in his tone. "Yeah, it has."

The air between them crackled with unspoken emotions. Jude's eyes bore into Trent's, and he could see the hurt etched in the lines of Trent's face. He knew he had to address what went unspoken.

"I never wanted us to end like that," Jude admitted, his voice softer this time. "I thought it was the right decision, but I've missed you."

Trent's gaze softened, and he took a deep breath. "You think this changes anything?"

Jude nodded, his eyes pleading for another chance as he reaches out to the other. "I know it won't be easy, but I want us to try again."

Trent sighed, the weight of the past few months still heavy on his heart. "Jude, you're going to Madrid, and I'm in Liverpool. It's a mess waiting to happen."

Jude moved closer, his voice low and determined. "Then let's be a beautiful mess together."

Their voices had dropped to a whisper, but the intensity was building. Suddenly, they were arguing. Words flowed like a tempest, accusations and confessions jumbled together.

Trent's voice cracked as he confessed, "I couldn't believe you were leaving for Madrid. It felt like you were choosing them over us. Over me."

Jude, with tears glistening in his eyes, shot back, "It wasn't about choosing. It was about an opportunity I couldn't pass up."

Soon, their anger turned into passion. The next thing they knew, they were kissing passionately, their lips crashing together as if trying to bridge the distance that had separated them. The fight had transformed into a fiery reunion.

The kiss left them breathless, and they clung to each other, desperate to make up for lost time. Whatever reservations they had melted away, and in the chaos of the fashion show, Jude and Trent were locked in an embrace that screamed longing, desire, and love.

Their story was far from over, and they both knew the challenges they would face. But in that moment, as they clung to each other amidst the flashing cameras and fashionable crowd, the world outside ceased to exist. Jude and Trent had found their way back to each other, and nothing else mattered.

Dude, i seriously wanna make small little drabbles with the takes that you have. It provides SO many outcomes and so many different relationships with not only Godhood, but the outcomes and disasters of it going wrong. When i was hunting for lvl 40 convos, i noticed that a lot of Gods/Deities speak to us as if we're not EXACTLY Human. Maybe something... different. Like, we're still MORTAL, but not quite human? (I hope that makes sense, if it dont, just ignore all that. Lmao, im sorry) BUT, a good chunk of them are all basically 'Yo, Summoner, wtf. You're really Weird.' and then you either remind them of ANOTHER God, or how they HOPE for humanity to be. Then you have others who are just, 'Wtf are you. You're playing everyone else like a damn kazoo, but not me. I got my eyes on you.' and i find that so Nice™.

again, my working theory is still that Kiran is a dead ringer for a deity named a Deva from Buddhism. this deity is similar to an angel, but are effectively mortals who live in a realm that's more comfy and pleasurable, and are just as able to fall into vice or be arrogant (i.e like every human on earth). in other words, a mortal divinity.

just like an angel, they are not wholly considered to be a God, and are not really meant to be prayed to. they kind of just... vibe up in their realms, and they actually are able to look down into the lower realms and observe.

Ben had only given Luke one rule to live by while he was away from his family, don't tell anyone his last name, and he followed that.

It wasn't his fault that Darth Vader sensed that he was a Force Sensitive and now he wants to train him, as a Jedi no less. That's the complete opposite of what Ben had told Luke. And after asking Darth Vader about his dad, Luke can't help but say yes to Darth Vader training him. After all, Luke's always wanted to be a Jedi like his father.

28. Bring Him Home -- KeeperofSeeds

Vader is sent to Tatooine by his Master after a series of failures. While there he discovers the existence of Luke. He meets Luke, convinces him to come with him off planet, and manages to hide him away for a while. He knows his Master won't tolerate a powerful force sensitive like Luke running around as a free agent once he's old enough to be a threat, and he also knows exactly how horrible it is to serve Palpatine. He won't let Luke be taken and used like that.

Eventually though, his deception is discovered.

Vader knows he isn't powerful enough to protect Luke on his own, and he isn't ready to overthrow Palpatine yet. He decides the only safe place for Luke is with the Rebel Alliance, the very people who've managed to stay out of his reach so far. So he takes Luke and defects.

House Rule 01: DROPPING TO ZERO (and getting back)

The Rule: whenever you’re brought back from unconsciousness you gain a level of exhaustion

The Reasoning: 5e combat almost necessitates yo-yoing from near-death expirience to battle to near-death expirience, all the time, without any consequence and it’s kinda lame.

People play DnD in all manner of ways, but I tend to focus my games around dramatic moments. We aren’t in high-RP mode all the time, but it pops up regularly. I think everyone in our group is a forum rp connoisseur, or an artist with dozens of characters, or a fanfic writer...

Why I say this is to establish that these people *love* character drama. But yet I found that even they simply get desensitized and taken out of the moment by the notion that 2 members of the party have Healing Word, so it wouldn’t even get to death saves. And it wouldn’t exactly be helpful to explicitly be like “please take this seriously, your life is in danger” when the rules clearly demonstrate it’s not. 

In my expirience some unsaid things have great effect on the presumed rules of engagement at the table.

Dramatically ramping up the difficulty of encounters and purposefully building them around the party’s weaknesses to make the encounter “feel more dangerous” is a very risky thing. Not only can you (and very likely at that) end up with a near TPK from a couple un/lucky rolls, you send a message.

The difference between:

1) the 4th encounter in a row, all entirely unrelated to each other, all attacking the group with an obscure type of damage that is the only type of damage no one has resistance to;

2) the understanding that going beyound your limit is physically taxing;

it is felt by the players. If all of their big guns are most of the time useless (by the dm’s design!) it brings a lot of animosity to the game and frankly, discourages from trying. We play this game to feel badass and have fun.

Another thing I like about it is that it starts slow, but you’re aware the upper levels are there, looming. As opposed to danger coming in a form of a crit on a special attack that just suddenly wipes everyone out (and let’s face it, 'but what if it crits’ is rarely on our minds, it’s like a 5% chance, pfff), this builds suspense. 

Now, I know that death yo-yo is a known problem with 5e. However, all the solutions to it that I heard of are often surface level. Like, for example - curbing healing word.

Healing word is a bonus action, 60f range, 1st lv spell. If you have at least one PC who has it, core rules as is, it does function a bit like a game breaker. If you were to try and get the fallen PC back up with a healing potion you would need:

1) to get to them, likely inviting opportunity attacks on your character;

2) sacrifice your action to feed them the potion;

3) and maybe most importantly, get that potion in advance! On lower levels that stuff is *expensive* and you probably only have 1 or 2 at most.

There’s planning, danger and sacrifice involved there. (Most of it also aplies to Cure Wounds, Healing Hands and the like)

Now look at Healing Word. You can get someone up often at no cost to your turn because bonus action abilities for most spellcasters are few and far between. But I still feel like banning healing word or making it a higher level spell just makes the situation... more annoying and not better?

Not to mention that at some point 2nd lv spells will become insignificant to your PCs too, and we have the same problem again.

(Someday I’ll write an equally long post on the ‘challenging vs bothersome difficulty’, but for now...)

TLDR: getting exhaustion from supernaturally bringing yourself back from the brink is intuitive, it’s an underused mechanic, it ramps up slowly but is still dangerous, costly to get rid of (long rest or potentially several 3rd lv Restorations), and can eventually kill you if you’re reckless enough. All of which adds appropriate narrative weight and danger that can be planned for.

Should’ve been part of the core rules, honestly.

a sorta prolonged absence

Hey everyone!

Some of you guys may have noticed that my activity on Tumblr has decreased significantly. Apart from the fact that I got one more violin student to work with starting this month along with all the others I have over the weekends, I also decided to participate in NaNoWriMo this year, tackling a new fandom I have never worked with before and only recently got into.

Yes. Undertale.

So far I’m well over 10K words, and the writing itself is very unrefined (at least compared to the Hogwarts Mystery shorts and the retells I have here) but I hope that I can reach the goal of 50K before the month is out. That said, though, I’ll be on and off here for the next little while and maybe into December as well (I am participating in the secret santa gift exchange once more), but I may pop in with a little drawing or an edit if I can.

If anyone wishes to follow along, I’m publishing the fic on Wattpad! The story is called “Eyes Open”, and it follows an adult protagonist going through the neutral, then true pacifist, routes of the game.

"You see this heart?" Flowey asked, clearly ignorant to the look of surprise on my face. "That is your SOUL, the very culmination of your being. It starts off weak, but it can grow stronger if you gain a lot of LV."

"Wait, wait. That is my--no." I shook my head. "I thought a soul defines a person emotionally, or spiritually--it reflects upon our personality and how we live among the world. That can't be..."

"Human, are you going to pay attention to my lesson or are you going to challenge me at every step?" Flowey demanded, his face morphed into a scowl. "I at least gave you the dictionary definition of the soul. Is that not enough?"

"Ugh." I groaned, placing my fingers on my temple--this was not how I imagined this trip to be. First, a backstabbing act from my twin sister, and now a talking flower who talks back if I argued with him. How much weirder was this day going to get? "Fine. You mentioned LV last--what does it stand for?"

Flowey brightened now at my reluctant surrender, his friendly smile returning. "LV stands for LOVE, of course. And down here, LOVE is spread through a little something called..." He scrunched his face up. "Hmm... 'friendliness pellets'."

As he spoke, a few white pellets the size of a gun bullet appeared out of nowhere, spinning in the air behind him. I raised an eyebrow again at the claim--they definitely did not look to be friendly.

"You want some LOVE, now, don't you? Don't worry, I'll share some!" Flowey reassured me. "Now come on, get as many of the pellets as you can!"

Something about the pellets did not seem friendly at all to me. They seemed to close in on my soul, in a manner akin to that of a giant unpleasant beast honing in on my fear, the most vulnerable point of my being. I shook my head and ducked downwards--to my pleasant surprise, the floating heart followed my movements, and the pellets soared right over the heart and out of sight.

Flowey immediately deadpanned at the sight of me ducking away from the pellets, the heart still pretty intact. "Hey, buddy, you missed them. Let's try this again, shall we?"

Another group of pellets soon sped towards the heart, and I instantly dropped into a roll, coming up on my right knee as the pellets whizzed by my right ear and out of sight once more.

"Is this a joke?" Flowey cried. "Are you braindead?"

He summoned another group of 'pellets' and scowled at me. "RUN. INTO. THE. BULLETS!"

Bullets? Didn't he just refer to them as pellets not too long ago? My eyes widened as they shot towards the heart with the speed of a flying bullet shot from a gun--and this time, I couldn't dodge them in time.

I watched in horror as one of them grazed the left side of the heart--not exactly at the optimal spot to tear a hole through it, but still hard enough to leave me feeling suddenly winded. The heart as well, once pulsating with a brilliant scarlet glow, had suddenly dimmed like the dying flame of a candle flickering at its dying stages. Instantly, Flowey's expression changed into maniac glee, his grin so wide and menacing he looked almost creepy enough to pass as Jacqui from last Halloween.

"You idiot," he finally cackled, clearly enjoying the sight of my suddenly weakened state. "In this world, it's kill or be killed. Why would anyone pass up an opportunity like this?"

A ring of bullets soon surrounded me and my SOUL, and I somehow felt the urge to collapse. So this was it, then. I failed to heed my professor's warnings, I was betrayed by my twin sister, and now I was about to die to this demonic flower who faked being friendly just to see me at my most vulnerable state. I tried to move, but gravity somehow rooted me firmly to the ground. Guess this was how I was going to go down, then.

"DIE."

Day 8 of the 31 Day Aveyond Fandom Challenge:

The theme for day 8 is; favorite daeva. I had hoped to write a fanfic, mostly because I feel like so far I’ve been writing mostly rants instead, but I just started feeling kinda low about my writing, and so yeah ... Anyway, my favorite daeva is probably Nangaithya (mostly because he is so easy to fight!) He definitely has a cool looking sprite, with all the purple and what not.

Plus, I love pomegranates and the party has to plant and grow some before we can get to him. As I mentioned earlier, he is super easy to fight (Especially when your playing with goodies and are at LV 35 with the best weapons and equipment.) Plus, if you defeat him, Vohu Manah will give you his key to the underworld and then you can go find Te’ijal! Though, you have to defeat Zarich and save Rashnu in order to actually get the sunscreen and have her join the party...
