#lyric breakdown

Since I am such a normal individual I’ve decided to attempt breaking down vanoé’s character song “Le Formidable”. I don’t hear much talk about it but the lyrics are just as cryptic and wild as the OP/ED.
Tumblr media
Before we get into it, in terms of translation, I could only find one on YouTube that thankfully color-coded the lyrics so I could decipher who sings what. If anyone has any other translations, I’d love to know please. So a bunch of the lines you can kinda figure out who’s singing but here’s how it’s gonna be:
Vanitas =💙
Noé =💜
Vanoe= 💙💜
Simple enough let’s get into it :)
💜: /I want to stay in bed feeling the warmth of the sun and drift in and out of this sweet dream/
Already we’ve mentioned dreaming, a running theme in this song. There is the well-known line Teacher says in chapter 55...
Tumblr media
Sleeping, specifically in regards to Noé, is something mochijun makes the audience take note. He can’t sleep without holding something. When he can’t fall asleep, it is highlighted like the night Vanitas rejected Noé drinking his blood. He doesn’t want Vanitas to disappear and I personally like how in the recent chapter, Vanitas stays by his side for a while. Almost like callback to that moment on the train but I’m getting carried away. You get the correlation I’m making, it’ll get very important later on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also have those warmth and sun connections to Noé, a large part of his character and Vanitas’ gravitation towards him.
💙: /With this grey weather today, this day will go by without any harmony/
We see Vanitas’ pessimistic outlook on life; grey, cloudy, devoid of color. Devoid of comfort and obviously these two contrasting people will clash but mix together throughout the song.
💜: /Tarte Tatin, Altus Paris! Endless interesting things!/
💙: /It’s always like this! Here and there, endlessly losing sight./
This seems pretty straightforward, Noé is getting distracted by all the wonderful things as usual and Vanitas chastises him. But let’s frame this another way, Noé is choosing to not focus. It’s simpler that way. He’s turning his focus elsewhere to better things, more pleasant things. And Vanitas is trying to wake him up. I’ll explain more in my theory soon.
💜: /What to look for today from this city/
💙: /Ah with all these things/
💙💜: /There is no time to rest/
Simple lyrics here. No comment.
💙💜: /Le formidable! Le formidable! It’s really easy. Just colliding, rolling down, and repeating again/
Here we are entering the chorus. There’s a common thread of repetition in every OP and ED in VnC. Like clockwork, these two have fallen into this pattern.
Colliding- Vanoé meeting, two worlds learning how to come together, joining as one
Rolling down- their downfall, incoming despair and tragedy
Repeating again- they find themselves back where they started, fated to be born and to die
Let me say the first part of my theory and keep this in the back of your head while remembering the lyrics: VnC is not a time loop in the traditional sense but rather a loop of memories. Also keep in mind the first ED Zero: “Now I remember, oh I have never lived a day without you. Untie the layer of memories...”
💙: /This worthless-/
💜: /wonderful-/
💙💜: /world we are walking on. Even not knowing is sometimes nice, right?/
Again, vanoé with different outlooks on life meet each other. But more importantly, we see the display of ignorance or blissful unawareness. We the audience have a vague idea on how this story ends and in a way, so do they. Vanitas knows very well he is doomed and has already entrusted Noé to end his life if it comes to it. But we also don’t know the specifics of their downfall and neither do they.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So this line has a double meaning that refers to the characters and the reader. As yeah it is nice to read vnc and enjoy the happy moments without knowing the painful details of what’s to come.
💜: /Over there something is flapping their wings/
💙: /And these uncountable days pass by. It’s not worth worrying about. So many unknown things, without meaning/
💜: /Escalier! I want to see the bright colors beyond!/
Noé, again giving his attention to supposedly insignificant things as Vanitas tends to see the larger picture, not caring for the mundane. Uncountable days can be matched with the grey weather mentioned earlier. But that also means things are murky, blur together, cloudy. They don’t make sense to Vanitas (such as love, his self-worth, the nature within people) while Noé wants to experience all the brightness of the world.
💙: /I told you to be quiet today, yet here we are!/
💜: /Now you loud person!/
💙💜: /I told you I hardly have time to breathe/
So, hypothetical scenario if we take this song literal: Vanoé is exploring the city because Noe wanted to Vanitas couldn’t say no. Vanitas is fed up and Noé thinks his complaints are aggravating. But this part shows a lack of understanding. They’re yelling about their own hardships but don’t see the other’s perspective.
💙💜: /Le formidable! Le formidable! It’s a simple thing. It’s just finding, losing sight and repeating again/
💜: /I want to dream/
💙: /It’s just a dream/
💙💜: /The world keep walking while not knowing the truth at this point/
Ok there’s a lot to dig our teeth in here. First of all, the finding, losing sight, repeating is another way of describing the colliding and rolling down said prior. Vanoe find each other, they lose each other, it’s fated to happen all over again. Now the big piece here, I want to dream/It’s just a dream. Surface-level interpretation > another instance of their differences. Noé wants be surrounded by dreams and wonder. While Vanitas looks at that beauty and scoff at it, since it isn’t real therefore not worth caring for. But if we read into this carefully, Noé wants to dream. He wants to stay in these memories, he doesn’t want to live in a world without Vanitas.
Let’s go back to OP 1: “I love this world and the light only you give me.”
We know OP 1 is Noe’s POV so let’s ask ourselves why would the Noé we are seeing, the one smiling at all the colors of the world say Vanitas is the only light he has (emphasis on “only”). Because the Noé singing the first OP is operating with far more knowledge and despair. We don’t know the truth at this point. “This world” is not real.
Allow me to offer what I think is happening. Noé and Vanitas meet, they go on this journey of understanding, trust, and love, Vanitas reaches his end and is killed by Noé. Noé lives on. We can tell the Noé writing this story is full of regret and sadness. But why is he writing this all down? He’s retelling the memories, putting them down physically on paper. Two things happened:
a) He exchanged his name with Naenia, wishing to remain in a world with Vanitas in it. Because that wish is still very present, Naenia has great interest in Noé. She mentions seeing him before in Louis but it could be a classic mochijun misdirect and it’s actually from receiving his name in a different iteration. There is that official art with Noé wearing Vanitas’ coat with that goat entity he saw in Gevaudan, pinned to his vest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However this can only work if Naenia is still around and isn’t resolved/defeated in the memoirs.
b) This is more likely in my opinion. Noé uses the Books and the memoirs act as a catalyst for him to have the world become his memories or for him to live in them. I know only those with blue blood or something can use the books.
Which is why Dr. Moreau had those experiments with Vanitas and Misha. Don’t worry, I already have a theory that Archivistes are some form of blue moon vampires but that is a whole other discussion. Point is, I think the Books of Vanitas are like an Elliot sword situation. Yes, Elliot owns the Nightray sword and carries it around but you don’t know its true purpose in the story until Leo wields it.
Noé causes these memories to replay, perhaps to save Vanitas or simply to dream again. Go back to when he was last happy. But here’s the thing, the Noé in this memory is unaware or ignorant of this, sees his present world as the real one and undergoes the events of the series. Vanitas dies, he lives on, and creates a memory world for himself. Rinse, recycle, repeat. Essentially, the first ED gave it away. The entirety of VnC is a layer of memories. Even the narrator Noé we are hearing is a memory that is trying to manifest a world of his own.
Reality and dreams are all intertwined now and Noé got lost in it. There are leaks in the cracks, for example when Vanitas cries and tells Luna his mother died at childbirth why would he call to her. Initially, you can read this as he’s just missing what he never had. But what if Vanitas’ mother was present in his life 9 memory loops ago but because these memories get further from the truth the more it happens, Noé simply forgot that detail when making the memoirs at some point in time. So now, in the memory layer #52 Vanitas has no mother.
Tumblr media
💜: /We will see what we “cannot see”/
💙: /We will know what we “don’t know”/
💙💜: /The final stop of this world that seems to be changing, seems only further ahead/
Noe’s line possibly goes into his Archiviste nature and how he experiences reading memories. It can as well build back into the dream/memory loop thing, he’s seeing things he can no longer “see.”
Vanitas’ line can be drawn to what Noé said during their fight.
Tumblr media
Vanitas acts like he has the final word and has a full grasp of how this world/himself works. But he really doesn’t and Noé is living proof of that, proving him wrong on several occasions that there’s still hope, they can’t give up yet, he won’t leave him etc. The final stop of this world is changing, but it’s further ahead. This is a story, a preserved section of time from the past. We gotta ask ourselves... why would the last stop be changing? Again, Vanitas’ death is the final stop but it’s changing, perhaps from the countless iterations we’ve gone through Noé writes the memoirs in a way that delays the ending. So he could remain just a little longer…
💙💜: /Le formidable! Le formidable! Everything is fine. While forgetting, hiding, and repeating it/
💙: /This worthless/
💜: /wonderful/
💙💜: /world we are walking on/
💙: /I don’t know but even so/
💜: /If it can make you smile.../
After this, it ends the song by repeating the first chorus with the colliding-rolling down part so I’ll make this the cutting point. The “everything is fine” totally doesn’t stick out in a story where we know everything will not be fine. The forgetting and hiding goes back to my dream-memory theory, Noé is hiding from the truth in these stacks upon stacks of memories and is possibly forgetting things as they really happened as a result. We already know he isn’t the most reliable narrator. But Noé wants to see Vanitas’ smile.
If it can make you smile again, if it can replay your laughter, why would I ever leave this wonderful lie? In OP 1: “Your laughing was reflected by a daydream”.
I’ll conclude this by saying two things. If you want to get even deeper, you can interpret Vanitas in this song as the voice in the back of Noé’s head. Its just a dream, this world is actually worthless, and Noé is trying to drown out those thoughts. Because yeah they sing lines together but the only time they’re directly speaking to each other is when Vanitas scolds Noé and Noé shouts back, calling him loud. Finally, I could be wrong in all this. I am aware how crazy I may look and I'm so thankful if you read this far.
But yeah if this is anywhere near canon, mochijun must be the most unhinged, absolutely cracked author I’ve ever seen. We’re going into Pandora Hearts levels of intricacy here. I hope you enjoyed my insanity 👍🏼

Ivy is so so gay, to explain let us lyric analyze:
How's one to know? I'd meet you where the spirit meets the bones, In a faith forgotten land
Hoax: “your faithless love’s the only hoax I believe in”
Tumblr media
A complicated relationship with religion is not something lacking throughout gay culture.
Taylor is more than likely referencing her own struggle with her relationship to a religion not approving of her sexuality.
Your touch brought forth an incandescent glow, Tarnished but so grand
The lovers touch while beautiful, was a sin, and wrong in the view of most but to Taylor this touch was amazing despite being tainted with those ideas.
Oh, goddamn, My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand, Taking mine, but it's been promised to another
This is probably a reference to the "adultery" being committed here, because the narrator has a fiancé/beard.
Oh, I can't, Stop you putting roots in my dreamland
She can’t control this love.
Her dreamland of “Folklore” is based in her real, honest, raw emotions.
She can’t stop this lover from being the reason for this dreamland.
I wish to know, The fatal flaw that makes you long to be, Magnificently cursed
Being gay has never been easy, and early on makes everyone who is gay in any way, wonder why they can’t just be straight. Taylor has most likely dealt with her own version of internalized homophobia shown in the original version of “Picture to Burn”: “Go and tell your friends that I'm obsessive and crazy, that's fine; I'll tell mine you're gay”.
Clover blooms in the fields, Spring breaks loose, the time is near, What would he do if he found us out?
This whole paragraph just gives forbidden gay love, and screams I don't want to care what other people think in this moment.
Crescent moon, coast is clear
Again with the hiding in “coast is clear”
Tumblr media
Associated with feminine energy??? Combined with the coast is clear??? Yep, screams hetero.
Spring breaks loose, but so does fear
So very gay. Very gay. Come on. Sound like recent political events in America? With the turn of a new season, fear, specifically fear of being caught together, or the media finding out becomes more relevant than normal.
He's gonna burn this house to the ground
This male partner/beard is going to ruin their relationship, completely out of fear of what would happen if the truth of who she loved came out.
I'd live and die for moments that we stole, On begged and borrowed time
Even though this love was kept a secret, it was still Taylor’s whole life at the time.
These moments were "on begged and borrowed time" due to outside pressure. Possibly the pressure to be straight, and to appear straight, and not have longing looks directed at your "best friend".
So yeah, it's a fire, It's a goddamn blaze in the dark, And you started it, You started it, So yeah, it's a war
You Are In Love: “You understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars”
The Great War -so LGBTQIA
She finally understands that she has to fight through societies pressures to keep the love of her life.
It's the goddamn fight of my life
What would be so hard about being straight and in love with Joe Alwyn? Especially when you’re only known for writing break up songs about “men”…
Most recently while introducing “Dear, John” Taylor told swifties that : we should not “feel the need to defend [her] on the internet against someone [we] think [she] might have written a song about 14 billion years ago."
There are many things that don’t allow this song to have a hetero explanation. These are the things. <3
My other song analysis’ if you’re interested <3

Okay, I did promise a lyric breakdown of the WALL, so here’s one under the cut. I’m so normal about this song lmao
Ok first of all, this part.
Tumblr media
Ichika has struggled with expressing her emotions clearly, whether that’s through her lyrics, words, or just on her face (the latter of which had led to many people painting her as cold and dismissive). She’s improved a lot in this aspect, though.
Next part:
Tumblr media
Throughout middle school, Ichika was completely withdrawn. Honestly, it was probably her way of protecting herself. She had no interest in making new connections when she was still latching so hard onto the past, so instead, she stayed distant.
Pulse of the Meteor touches on this a bit with “my distorted way of defending myself” among other lyrics but that’s a whole seperate breakdown.
And nextly:
Tumblr media
This part is referring to Ichika never letting go of Saki in the hospital, with Saki being named after the sky. Ichika embraced that friendship tightly, as it was the thing that helped them both kept going through all their issues.
Also, regarding twilight:
Tumblr media
The twilight sky refers to Ichika herself, named after the stars. She could be considered one of the brightest stars, as she never completely lost faith in her friends, even after all the time being pushed away. She still tried to reunite, to be that navigating force.
Next:
Tumblr media
The past left scars. Ichika’s personality was permanently changed by the constant rejections. Going from more impulsive, to more soft-spoken. That won’t ever fully be undone (though that’s not a bad thing, which I will touch on later).
Next:
Tumblr media
Continuing that point, despite the pain from the past, she’s moving past it with her friends. Making music that resonates with others.
Next:
Tumblr media
L/N will always be there for Ichika, whether she falters or not, and she’s come so far from who she was at the beginning (A+ character development).
Next, this part refers to her dynamic with Shiho (the sun) and Honami (the moon).
Tumblr media
Despite thinking that she’d already tried everything that she could, despite thinking that she already lost them for good, she still wanted nothing more than to bridge the gap between them.
Next:
Tumblr media
Despite everything that happened, Ichika is so truly happy now. She hated being alone, hated losing the others. But it’s okay now. They’ve all healed from the past. They can enjoy their present and future now.
Next:
Tumblr media
It’s a very common theme in l/n stories that these guys are not made to be without each other. All four of them need to be together. 4 = 1, after all. They keeping moving forward because they have one another.
Next:
“The joy that nearly suffocates us,
And the countless walls towering over us,
All of it, all of it, is for the sake of this voice!”
The overwhelming happinesses, and all the challenges that they will face — it’s all because of their band, because of their bond together.
Next:
“In a sea of fog so deep it drowns you,
On days when you just want to curse yourself,
The strength of your eyes that had always been there,
It brings me so close to tears.”
Ichika’s talking about the others here; she views them as so strong, something that they don’t always see, and it inspires her so much. They’ve always beeen a motivating force for her.
Next:
“This overflowing tattered melody, this rhythm, and the blue scars inside them,
From this moment onwards, they'll continue to mix together.”
This verse changed a bit, because she accepted that the past happened. Ichika’s living with the memories, and growing stronger from them.
Her personality change wasn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Ichika from the past before everything wasn’t better than the Ichika from now. If anything, between her impulsive side coming back, and her more thoughtful side now, she has a lot of things that her childhood self did not have.
Ok, and that’s all. Format change, because there is a limit to how many pictures a post can have apparently, sorry lol, hope you enjoyed or at least didn’t hate!

I’m your man by Mitski for Cypress literally kills me. He just knows in some way he will sabotage the relationship, he truly believes he is a curse. How Gabriel will always believe in her, and Cypress believes they will never be that person they see in her.
Tumblr media
Terrified by Jazmin Bean is such a perfect encapsulation of everything Cy is feeling. Cypress has dealt with so much trauma, so much abuse from people she’s terrified to even love. She believes she’s incapable of love or being loved, because of what happened to her. They’ve been killed time and time again, so to them love was pain, not tender. “It’s so hard to find the grace for me to let my wounded spirit accept hands so warm.” Cypress has never known tenderness, nor warmth. It’s always been cold and harsh, manipulative, in the love he experienced his whole life. That is why he was so terrified when Gabriel wanted an actual relationship with them. To them, Gabriel was always another target to use as a leg up. But it began to get harder and harder to think of him as that, even saying it to Rhandradel that day had felt like a lie. It felt sour on their tongue to even say.
Tumblr media
Cage by Dear Sherlock represents their fears. Cypress is so hungry for love but shields themselves off from everyone and everything, in fear that it will cage them again. In fear that it will hurt them and everything they love again.
Tumblr media
Ugh I cannot go into super detail about me and my husband cause spoilers, but it’s just really about how misconstrued love was for Cypress and how she thought she was in a loving relationship with someone who cared about her, but only cared about what she could give him. So they always felt love in the attention even if it was negative, so long as they had someone around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Notre Dame by Paris Paloma is a song about Georgia, and being cut off from her. Georgia gave Cypress a chance to feel powerful, to be above everybody else and to never be hurt again. To feel almost like a higher power and watch people be beneath them for once rather than the other way around. Now that Georgia is gone from her pocket, it feels cold, and she feels small again. Especially since her loose ends haven’t been dealt with, something that Georgia promised her. Now he is terrified of the impending consequences.
Especially now that he had been vulnerable with Gabriel, and he’s now aware that he cares.

“Don’t Blame Me” by Taylor Swift, Kanej’s version
So I’m a major Swiftie and ever since I read soc and ck, I can’t help but think of Inej and Kaz when I hear this song. So here’s a lyric breakdown that nobody asked for of most of the two verses and part of the bridge because I have issues. Sorry it’s kinda long eheh
Kaz pov:
“Something happened for the first time in the darkest little paradise. Shaking, pacing, I just need you” in the prison cart on their way into the Ice Court when her voice brought him back from the depths
“For you I would cross the line” RIP Oomen’s eyeball
“For you I would waste my time” “there will be a net”, risking a job for her safety
“For you I would lose my mind” threatening Wylan and just being generally more unhinged when Inej was kidnapped
“Trip of my life every time, yeah every time you’re touching me” his touch aversion, his entire mind flipping out while changing her bandages in the blessed bathroom scene
Inej pov:
“My name is whatever you decide” accepting Kaz christening her “The Wraith”
“I’m just gonna call you mine” insisting on thinking of Kaz as human, just a boy, even a miracle, instead of the monster he said he was
“Halo hiding my obsession” her naturally pious nature giving way to her desire to kill the people that were beating Kaz on the floor of the Crow Club
“And baby, for you, I would fall from grace” her killing for him
“Just to touch your face” ROOF OF THE ICE COURT
Bonus:
“If you walk away, I’d beg you on my knees to stay.”
I like it when men beg.
Stay in Ketterdam. Stay with me.
Oh lord save me these two are going to destroy me.

keshi song and lyric analysis -- blue
this is gonna become a series of keshi song breakdowns, isn't it?
TW/CW: Mentioned intoxication, loss of self, drifting relationships.
-- All songs will be linked through Spotify!! --
blue -- keshi (Genre: Alt-Indie)
This is one of those songs that you blast on your radio as you drive seventy miles down a deserted highway at night. It references a blue moon-- an uncommon phenomenon but incredibly beautiful. The music video is gorgeous, you can watch that here. Overall, the aesthetic to very nostalgic to me and I have personal private connections to it. I love how the lyrics depict a gradual but still very dramatic shift in relationships that aren't quite noticed until it's too late. He expresses how change is difficult (and I agree. If change is easy for you, I both respect and fear you.) and how he copes with it. If you go onto genius lyrics, you can see keshi's direct annotations on what things mean. I'm going to talk about them, but you can read the genius stuff here. "Sixth Street" is a street full of bars in Austin, Texas and represents how one drinks their sorrows away. keshi's direct annotation of the lyrics "blue moon in different phases" is, and I quote, "been a long min." Blue moons usually appear every three years-- that's a fun transition into the next set of lines "three hours, three months away." I love the repeated use of the number three-- it's always been a really cool prime number. He references mundane life with common phrases like "date night" and "9-5" albeit most people don't work 9 to 5 anymore.
Overall, the song is quite wistful, referencing the unwillingness or inability to cope with the changes taking place in the individual's life. While site-specific locations may not necessarily be the case in everyone's life, many people can relate to hitting up a bar or feeling lost in the sea of life and feeling behind while everyone moves on. Everyone changes and adjusts at different paces. I hope where you are, you're in a good place. <3 :)

the lyric "where are my keys? i lost my phone." in lady gaga's song "just dance" means that, at the time of writing, people used to go to parties, raves, and/or the club and would not record every minute going on. the reason for this is because during that time of writing and partying, there was no social media that existed in which anyone could post to in hopes of proving how cool they were. i know its hard to comprehend but rather than seeing a sea of cellular devices held up in the pit, obscuring your view and experience in connecting with the artists on stage, you would instead often hear "oh shit my phone... i must have dropped it" or "anybody seen an orange nokia?" in the chaos of shouts of that guy who lost his dance partner, molly, and keeps calling her name.... these days the lyric would probably have to change to "where are my bees? i lost my home" as in current climate, the bees are endangered and the cost of living keeps rising. follow for more lyric break downs

The day will probably come back around
돌아오겠지 (Verb ending giving the meaning of ‘I guess I’ll have to’)돌아오겠지 (Verb ending -지)
아무일도 없단 듯이
As if nothing at all happened,
Yeah, life goes on
Like an arrow in the blue sky

Another day flies by
On my pillow, on my table
Yeah, life goes on
Like this again

Kay. Here is a list of specific lines in the first vnc op that sounds so sus. If y’all want I’ll make a part 2
Caught my eye the second I read it. Looks normal enough but “this world?” You couldn’t say “the world” or “my life”. Then you add “light only you give me.” It sounds like it’s saying I prefer this world. I prefer this one. You’re my ONLY light??? Sus.
Tumblr media
Strange verse. Given how this song is very likely from Noe’s POV I automatically think of the theory that Noé is partially blind on his left eye. We never know what happened to it but he is wearing bandages in the early flashbacks. Thus the word ‘fractured’. Sus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More dream wording. Reflected, suggesting this laugh was an illusion. It was copied in a daydream. By something not real. Sus.
Tumblr media
MORE DREAM WORDS
Though saying “the burning dream” can mean two things. 1) This dream is fleeting and about to turn into ashes. Won’t last long essentially
2) This dream hurts. It’s painful to bear but isn’t it so beautiful?
Sus.
Tumblr media
Sky and Void. Light and Dark. Yada yada but when they meet “the dreams will come later.” That can be referring to whatever starry space vanoé is in that Noé couldn’t reach his hand. And the dreams, or the loops, will follow. For them to be born and die repeatedly. Sky and Void can also just be taking about vanoé straight up. How they meet and are going to repeat it all over. Sus.
Tumblr media
NOW THIS! This is crucial. Every other line, we can argue eh fancy lyric with symbolism. But you cannot ignore this because it gives away that the song is a conversation. It’s where the illusion breaks fuck it’s the last line of the song.

It reveals that someone is ranting and gushing about how beautiful it all is. How bright the world is with this other person. And it’s only at the end, the mysterious person butts in and says “But you can see me. Am I not right here?”

Overall, extremely sus song but forever a bop 😌
