2024 Reading Goals

Hello hello! Happy New Year to all!

Fun fact, by posting this at 11:00am GMT, 2023 has officially ended in all inhabited countries as UTC -11 is the last inhabited timezone.

I haven't been a resolutions person for a couple of years now but I admit I do love a challenge and goal setting. I also love reading. I'm sure you don't need the title to tell you where this is going. I've had goodreads since Sept, 2016 and have been taking part in their reading challenge since 2020. I've met my goal evey year except 2021 and I hope to make three years in a row this year!

2023's goal was an ambitious 48 books and I somehow managed to read 48 (I attribute a good 1/3 to getting a library card and access to libby). 18 of those books were comics/manga though and while I do believe anything with a ISBN counts, I'd like for comics & manga to only be about 25% of my books instead of the current 38%. I feel like I might be setting myself up a bit but I'm not going to be too upset if at the end of the year, I don't lower the percentage. This is just a bit of fun.

Anyways in no particular order, here's a tentative list of the 48 books I plan to read in 2024. This is subject to change due to availability, gifts, recommendations and new releases.

The runes on Excalibur 👀👀

They’re Nordic, wouldn’t they be Anglo Saxon runes based on the time? Or some sort of Celtic equivalent?

Which. Does the sword = norse or like, type of sword ≠ Norse???

Basically. Just a general Excalibur question and whether it’s historically correct.

Bonus: What do the runes even mean, I know they’re a random sequence and not what they say it means in the show buuttt…. 🤷‍♀️

The Problem of Runes

The runes used in the show are Elder Futhark, an anglo-saxon/norseman language in a time when one of the larger enemy forces are the anglo-saxons. Which… doesn’t make a lot of sense. Interestingly, should the sword exist, at the time they'd have used Latin letters, since Romans had already come and begun slowly making people Christian. Funnily enough, Old English only came after Arthur's time in real history. They most likely were also speaking Old Welsh/Hen Gymraeg. I think I may have mentioned it before, who knows, but language is diverse. Language in a post-roman conquest after rome also leaves but anglo-saxons haven’t shown up, even worse. Likely, it wasn’t all simple as it is in the show (due to audience understandings) and likely each Kingdom had its own language/dialect and the different parts of their land also had their own dialects. Likely, around Camelot to Mercia, and back to Caerleon, it’s likely that the language would have links to Latin, at least in the upper class due to Latin being the language of government and writing, but it wouldn’t be the only thing about. 

But back to Futhark, my base understanding is that in Britain, there is roughly a period between 400-900 in which artifacts with Runes of this type are found, although they did exist up to 1066 until the Norman Conquest, while King Arthur exists anywhere from 420-1100 (give or take - the show has of course anachronisms[Tomato / Potato / Sandwhich / Silk dresses for Morgana], but it also, then, has dragons).  

Also, Ogham may be used if they wanted a more ‘mystic’ feel of inscription. The language is attributed to the Druids, the irish, the pictish, and would use 20 letters.

According to the High Medieval Briatharogam, an irish literature explanation for kennings on the ogham alphabet, trees can be ascribed to specific letters. There is scholarly debate, however, if Ogham is a cipher based on either Germanic runes, Elder Futhark, Greek alphabet, or even Latin. This is due, largely to the “H/Z” letters present in Ogham, but unused in Irish and the vocalic/consonantal variant of “U” vs “W”. And again, at the time, Latin in Roman Britannia, specifically southern and the west, would be prominent (and outside of Ireland, the highest concentration of Ogham is in Wales).

(Notably Ogham does not have a ‘w’ as a letter so substituting of the sound /u/ is done or with a soft /v/ sound - same with the dual C as there isn’t a K (from what i can tell))

Translation

Based on Arthurian ‘lore’, there are two base sayings that are inscribed on Arthur’s blade “Take me up, cast me away.” This comes from Tennyson'sIdylls of the King, within which the sword is inscribed with the "oldest tongue of all this world". Should the sword be pulled from a rock and anvil, there is often the inscription accompanining it saying "Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil is likewise King of all England" (or something to that degree) which is seen in Malory’s works. 

To receive an answer of what should be on the sword and what is, is very different. And I am shamelessly pulling from Merlin.fandom as this has been a conversation before. “The runes on the Excalibur in the picture say 'ahefemupwiithstr' which isn't really a word” (https://merlin.fandom.com/f/p/2608657942446217361) However, that’s not to say someone didn’t solve what it should be written as “Translation for "Take Me Up" • Tiwaz - Ansuz - Kenaz - Ewhaz • Mannaz - Ewhaz • Uruz - Perthro • / Translation for "Cast Me Away" • Kenaz - Ansuz - Soliow - Thurasaz • Mannaz - Ewhaz • Ansuz - Wunjo - Ansuz •” 

Now, these runes given for the saying do indeed spell out Take me up/Kast me away, this is written with the intention of spelling the words completely assuming no ideography (using what the letters mean[as you ask] rather than what they show: Tiwaz meaning Tyr/Sky god + order/justice / Ansuz meaning As/Odin + order/inspiration/sovereign power / Kenaz being Beacon/Torch + knowledge/tradition/hearth / Ewhaz being Horse + transportation/Steady progress/change / Mannaz meaning Man/Mankind + The Self/human race/mortality / Uruz being Auroch/Ox + Physical Strength/speed/untamed potential / Perthro meaning Lot Cup/Vagina + Feminine Mysteries/occult/secrets/initiation /// Soliow being The Sun + Success/honour/health / Thurasaz(or redoing Tiwaz potentially in the spelling of it) meaning Thorn/Giant + defense/conflict/catharsis/purging / Wunjo being Joy + Comfort/pleasure/harmony --- In my understanding of these, it feels like “take me up” in these runes has indications of taking a throne, bringing in order to the human race, whereas “cast me away” has similar lettering but implicates successes having been done and a conflict having been finished, thus ‘casting away’ the sword once the battle is done).

Sword Types

Anglo-Saxon swords comprised two-edged straight, flat blades. The tang of the blade was covered by a hilt, which consisted of an upper and lower guard, a pommel (often decorated depending on need and use), and a grip by which the sword was held.

At the time BBC depicts Merlin, the Anglo-Saxons have yet to conquer Britain, thus implying the soldiers wouldn’t likely be using an anglo-saxon sword, however, they could be considering the flow of ideas surpasses the flow of war I suppose.

Excalibur has been depicted from everything from a Roman Gladius (likely in earlier prose when King Arthur existed near the time of Post-Roman Britain, and there are stories with King Arthur and Julius Ceasar meeting, which is very… interesting), to a medieval longsword. Based off the hilt and pommel of Excalibur that we see, it appears to be almost a form of Claymore/Broadsword or Longsword.

However, these range roughly 1100-1700s. In the myths we have, Excalibur is never actually described. However, in modern depictions (film and artwork) it is typically depicted as a form of arming sword, that is, one-handed straight+long-bladed with a double-edge with a crossguard. Which, is reasonable, this style was very popular in the middle ages.

The depiction of Excalibur, in my opinion, is fitting to the 10th and 13th century forms of such swords (the 13th century has that fancy pommel at the end that the sword has in the show). However, your ask was more is this sword norse? Which, the depiction given is kind of in answer, due to the style given at what should be 5th century >< which may look something more similar to this with shorter crossguards while maintaining the circular pommel. Also to note, the term Pommel connects to anglo-normal “little apple” as it was an enlarged fitting at the top of the handle.

BBC Merlin vs Kaamelott - Personnages - Arthur, Merlin

Commençons donc par une présentation - rapide - des personnages et de leurs relations. Je précise encore que tout ceci est MON point de vue, mais que je vous invite à en discuter avec moi si vous n’êtes pas d’accord ! En général, ça risque de finir par moi disant “oh mais putain oui t’as raison j’avais oublié ça !!” Donc no worries :)

Au fait, spoilers pour l’intégralité de ses 2 séries ! Et déso pour mon usage inapproprié de l’anglais, j’ai le vocabulaire que cette plateforme m’a appris…

Arthur (BBC Merlin) : le perso principal avec Merlin, le Prince, le Roi, the truest Gryffondor to ever gryffondored. A commencé comme un abruti de prince pourri gâté et a fini comme un Roi, avant de finir tout court. Daddy issues (en même temps qui n’en aurait pas...) mais finit par se faire ses propres opinions et c’est pas dommage. N’aura jamais eu le temps de réellement accepter la magie comme une bonne chose. Se fait blesser mortellement lors d’une bataille, et mourra dans les bras de Merlin

Relationship : Canon : fils d’Uther, a grandi avec sa demie-sœur/adoptive Morgana, tombe amoureux de Gwen et l’épouse, forme sa Table Ronde. Fanon : Merthur all the way, quelques autres ships

Arthur (Kaamelott) : perso principal s’il y en a un. Le ROI. Le stratège, le cultivé, entouré de bras-cassés. Le désespéré, le sacrifié (dans un sens). A la base, l’a rien demandé à personne et finit à la tête d’un pays. Tragique backstory. Contrairement à l’autre Arthur, lui n’a pas grandi avec une petite cuillère en argent dans la bouche auprès d’un père (je vais pas dire aimant mais bon. Présent quoi) et s’est retrouvé balancé à Rome (pour sa propre sécurité) pour y faire ses classes. Désir d’enfants +++ Tente de se suicider après une bonne dépression qui dure depuis des années, et après avoir appris qu’il n’avait pas d’enfants (je résume), survit, et passe la main du royaume à Lancelot en qui il a confiance (HA. HA. HA.) La suite en novembre 2020.

Relations : Canon : est tombé amoureux d’Aconia à Rome, a désormais un paquets de maîtresses. Forme sa Table Ronde de bras-cassés (je risque de me répéter. Mais c’est affectueux). Épouse Guenièvre (n’en a jamais été amoureux) et ça étend sa famille à des gens de Carmélide, vous vous rendez compte ? Relation avec sa propre famille limitées et... peu affectueuses (sauf avec son neveu, lui ça va). Relations houleuses avec à peu près tout le monde, on va pas se mentir. Fanon : Arthur/Mani, Arthur/Vénec (je ne prendrais pas parti mais i’d die pour ces ships là), Arthur/Lancelot i guess ?

Commence comme ça (plus ou moins)/Fini comme ça (plus ou moins aussi... vivement K 1V)

bonus : bb Arthur :

Points communs : De bonnes personnes, dans l’ensemble. Drames de l’enfance (complètement déraciné pour l’un, perte de sa mère pour l’autre). Font de leur possible pour améliorer la vie des gens. Bons rois, aimés par le peuple. Ont formés leurs Tables Rondes (bon après ça c’est dans la légende mais c’est pas si simple de trouver des points communs alors pouet-pouet)

Différences : Ne peuvent pas compter sur leur entourage de la même façon… Leur amour pour Gwen/Guenièvre est différent, si tant est que K!Arthur en ressente pour sa femme (je dirais que oui, d’une façon ou d’une autre...) M!Arthur est jeune, il apprend, il a de l’espoir. K!Arthur est plus mûr, et a moins d’espoir… Il a été forgé par son passé, alors que la série BBC Merlin retrace en fait ce qui forge Arthur. On ne fait qu’en avoir un aperçu dans Kaamelott (bien suffisant pour nous traumatiser tho). Reste à espérer que les 2 Arthur n’aient pas le même destin (je veux des happy ends)

Merlin sous le cut :

Merlin (BBC Merlin) : le personnage principal, avec Arthur. Le plus grand sorcier qui ait jamais marché sur la terre. Jeune homme qui vient plus ou moins à Camelot pour accomplir sa destinée. Et sa destinée c’est Arthur, et l’aider à faire d’Albion la grande nation qu’elle devrait être (plus ou moins encore). Sa magie est illégale, il est donc le serviteur du prince. Boulet maladroit mais on l’aime quand même. Passe sa vie à déjouer des complots contre Camelot et/ou Arthur. Honnêtement, je sais pas quand il dort. Est immortel (enfin ne peut pas mourir de vieillesse en tout cas), ce qui nous a valu les quelques secondes les plus traumatisantes de cette série, après la mort d’Arthur, avec un petit flash-forward qui se passe de nos jours, où on se rend compte que Merlin attend toujours le retour d’Arthur pour qu’ils puissent accomplir leurs destins.

Relationship : Canon : sa mère, Will un ami d’enfance, puis Gaius (father/grand-père/oncle figure) à Camelot qu’il assiste dans son devoir de médecin de la cour, serviteur/esclave/meilleur ami (?) d’Arthur finalement. Ami avec quand même quasi tout le monde à Camelot. Tombe amoureux de Freya dont je reparlerais plus tard. Fanon : Merthur all the way (je veux dire que c’est le main ship de la fanbase), Merwaine, probablement un paquet d’autres

Merlin (Kaamelott) : le plus grand sorcier qui ait jamais marché sur la terre aussi.  ... HAHAHAHAHAHA nan jdéconne. De toute façon lui il est druide, et druide et enchanteur c’est pas la même chose alors faut pas s’étonner qu’il soit pas aussi bon que cet abruti d’Elias là. Bref. Mi-démon mi-pucelle, 800 ans et quelques. Ça sonne impressionnant comme ça sur le CV mais c’est pas aussi impressionnant en vrai. Ceci étant dit, protecteur d’Arthur depuis tout petit, c’est lui qui l’a amené à Rome (i think ?). Finit par en avoir ras la casquette d’être pris pour un nul et se barre dans un autre clan. Ressemble à l’idée qu’on se fait classiquement de Merlin, le vieux barbu.

Relations : Canon : il doit bien aimer Arthur quand même. Sa Némésis s’appelle Elias et ils partagent le même labo. Fanon : oh my god they were labmates

Points communs : Ils s’appellent Merlin. ... euh ... Bon, je suis vache, K!Merlin sait quand même faire de la magie druidique.

Différences : Tout ! Leurs âges, leurs compétences... Et même si K!Merlin a des éclair de sarcasme, M!Merlin le bat à plates coutures aussi là-dessus.

"I've never been, but I would really like to!" Vincent normally has an ability to light up an entire room with his everyday smile, but when he gets excited, the effect is near-blinding. He is all but jumping out of his shoes, and if he shakes your hands any harder they will fall right off.

Comte gives a thoughtful hum from the head of the dining table. "The Moulin de la Galette tends to run cheaper than other establishments. If that's what's stopping you from staying within city-limits, then—"

Leonardo cuts him off with a sigh that’s somewhere between annoyed and playful. "It's not always about money, Comte. Maybe he just wants a night out with a couple of drinks under open stars. With his special lady of course."

“Indeed!” Dazai says as he finishes the last of his Dazai-made tofu. “There is a right way and there is a very right way to make love for an audience of—”

Theo interjects: "I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't speak of Broer’s extracurricular activities."

“‘Extracurricular’, he says.” Arthur snorts. "Is there any time when you appreciate others speaking about Vincent?"

"If it's positive things," Theo begins swirling his pancakes around on his freshly-syrupped plate, "they can speak about him to their heart's content."

"And you wouldn't get jealous?" Napo asks as he steals a cube of cheese off Jean's plate.

"Why would he be jealous?" Mozart answers before Theo can. 

Theo turns back to Napoleon. "Exactly. Why would I be—"

"I follow what you are saying, Mozart," Jean cuts in. "If Theo carefully hides himself in the shrubbery as he usually does, he will be able to moderate any discussion of Vincent and step in as necessary. Napoleon. Please stop touching my cheese."

"What do you mean 'as usual'!?" Theo angrily stuffs a forkful of pancakes into his mouth, though even he isn’t above expressing awe at how deftly Napoleon parries Jean’s swatting fork.

Mozart shakes his head. "That's not exactly what I meant, Jean." But his words are lost to the backdrop of Theo's furious chewing.

"I don't" —Theo gulps before reaching for another forkful— “stalk Broer as he goes about his day. And that bush thing only happened once!"

"Twice," Isaac says, retrieving a plate of sandwiches from Sebastian and leaving the dining room with no further comment. 

Dazai stands up,checks his kimono sleeves for spare apples, then scuttles after Isaac.

Sebastian nods thoughtfully in the wake of Isaac's departure. "I would have to check my records, but I am fairly certain it has happened on at least four occasions."

"Records?" At least three people ask.

Shakespeare produces an elegant laugh over the rim of his morning alcohol. "I sometimes forget how humorous you all can be whilst distracted from your inner troubles."

Theo sets his fork down. He slowly slides his chair back, stands up, fixes his scarf, takes a deep breath—

The entire time that this conversation has been going on in the background, and even while Theo chases Shakespeare from table to window, and even after Shakespeare picks up Lumiere and chases Theo from window to door, Vincent explains to you about the unique amenities at the Moulin de la Galette.

"I'm really interested in painting that kind of lively atmosphere," he finishes. "Oh, you have some food—" He thumbs something off your cheek before sticking it in his mouth and continuing without missing a beat. "And I'd really like it if you would come with me."

Thoughts/Observations on Joker, part 1

AKA I Spent 7 Hours on This, I Will Die if it Gets Less Than Three Notes

I could rave for hours about this movie’s cinematography. Literal hours.

Nobody talks enough about Arthur’s full-fledged dedication to his clown craft. Man is working 60+ hours a week and does not break a sweat. I also fucking love this clowny face he pulls here. The first shot we see of Arthur in full. Holy shit is it beautiful. God bless Joaquin Phoenix.

These two shots together are incredibly important to me. In a split-second we see Arthur’s disbelief that he cannot control the whirlwind of emotions inside of his own head, not even being able to produce a smile, and then his resignation because it’s just another day. Heartbreaking.

Gotham City is such a dump but I’d be bullshitting myself if I said I didn’t love the grimy aesthetic of it. It’s technicolor trash.

Arthur loves his job so much. He genuinely enjoys being Carnival. That hurts a lot to think about in hindsight.

This opening card is so imposing. Not only does it take up the entire screen to the point of running off the edges, but it’s shielding Arthur from view. Arthur is invisible in light of Joker in Arthur’s own movie.

I highly, highly recommend it

Okay. Joaquin’s immersion into his characters -- all of them -- is absolutely incredible. But Arthur is just ... off the charts, man. No two of his characters are the same and he embeds himself so deeply in their skin, but Joaquin buried himself so deeply into Arthur’s brain that it is so hard for me to see any of Joaquin at all. God, he’s incredible and this shot makes me emotional because this just is Arthur.

ARTHUR WOULD BE A GREAT DAD AND I DO NOT ACCEPT ARGUMENTS

It really speaks to how shitty Gotham is that this man is having a full-fledged screaming/laughing breakdown on the bus and nobody is batting an eye

I adore how the cinematography paints Arthur as so small to his own environment. He’s a speck of dust. A fleck.

I have been trying to figure out the layout of this apartment for months and my inability to, even with a floor plan, is driving me insane

I just found out that the Budweiser beer jingle Here Comes the King is on the soundtrack and plays when Arthur comes home and that made me go feral

It is second nature for me to do this stupid pose every time I watch this scene

Arthur blending into the crowd here makes me ... so happy. He looks so happy.

This is Arthur’s best laugh of the movie, fuck you. I am incredulous that I was the only person laughing when I saw this in the theater opening night.

This is one of the few moments I really see Joaquin shine through Arthur. I don’t know why, but this lighting and his voice and his intensity gives me visceral flashbacks to watching a little boy Joaquin in Parenthood. God, I love this man.

It really is a testament to Penny’s (lack of) parenting that Arthur is day dreaming about receiving affection and validation from a parent figure when his own mother is literally right there

Why was Hoyt not informed that Arthur got his ass beat on the job? As Arthur’s employer he should’ve literally been the first person to know so he could make a note of it. Either he wasn’t told or he gave so little of a fuck that his consciousness astral projected to another plane of existence while he shoved the white powder down his throat and forgot Arthur existed at all.

Literally fuck Hoyt. I hate him even more that his office is the coolest shit in the world

I could write a full damn essay about why the misleading advertising of Sophie as a prominent character was the greatest twist of the whole movie. Literally I am still speechless how the movie did that.

I am not kidding when I say my sister has this same color scheme in the bathroom of our house and realizing that made me werewolf

Also Arthur being the son Penny doesn’t deserve warms and breaks my heart

The complete lack of reaction to Penny’s “Don’t you have to be funny to be a comedian” makes me laugh and cry internally

This shot? Gorgeous. His face? Deadly. That jawline? Cutting diamonds. Hotel? Trivago.

I really, really want a Joker 2, but at the same time I do not want a Joker 2 because Joaquin Phoenix has a baby who needs him now and he cannot be pulling shit like losing 52 lbs for a role

Also I REALLY need to discuss how much this brass ballet reminds me so heavily of Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs. Holy fuck, I got actually chills in the theater

And then this shot reminds me so heavily of the opening of Fedddy vs Jason with Freddy Krueger laughing over his newspaper collage of missing children. Holy fuck I love this cinematography.

This part is so Chaplinesque, the way he slides the gun into his coat again

These children look so afraid of him for dropping the gun and wowie, does that really hurt

Was this asshole supposed to be modeled after Eric Trump? Because I get really douchebaggy Eric Trump vibes (minus the jacked teeth) from this ringleader

I don’t have much to say here except I am in love with the way Artie’s hair sticks straight up in bottle curls when the clown wig slides off

Also if you decide it’s a good idea to mess with a man dressed as a clown laughing maniacally on the subway of one of the most dangerous cities in the world, you are asking him to shoot you and I will not feel sorry for you

I will never not be in love with this image. I fell in love with it in the teaser trailer and almost went feral in the middle of the mall when I saw this was the poster they used to advertise the movie with. My friend described this movie as “chaos, beautified,” and nothing sums it up as well as this picture.

BBC Merlin vs Kaamelott - Personnages - Morgana/Anna+Morgane, Gwen/Guenièvre

Finissons la famille Pendragon avec la sœur, et l’épouse !

RAPPEL : SPOILERS

Ici c’est spécial, 1 perso de BBC Merlin correspond à 2 dans Kaamelott : Morgane la fée, et Anna la soeur de Arthur n’est qu’une dans BBC Merlin.

Morgana (BBC Merlin) : Princesse sympa jusqu’à ce que ses pouvoirs se réveillent et que l’absence de tolérance du royaume la transforme en terrible sorcière déterminée à se venger de Camelot. Très classe. J’ai cru assez longtemps à sa rédemption.

Pour développer un peu, Morgana a été élevée comme une princesse, certes adoptée, mais tout de même. Son père était bof tendre, mais aimant. Evidemment, à l’adolescence, la rigidité du père a causé des différents et a creusé un fossé entre les deux. L’apparition des visions de Morgana et sa trouille de lui en parler n’a bien sûr pas aidé. L’opposition acharnée et sans compassion du père à la magie quand sa fille se rendait compte petit à petit qu’elle en avait (de la magie, et de la compassion) les a définitivement séparé, et en fin de compte, a fait d’elle une adversaire féroce et tenace d’Uther et de tout ce qui le lui rappelait (Arthur, Camelot, et Merlin, puisqu’il protège ces derniers) 

Relationship : Canon : fille adoptive de Uther, réellement sa fille cachée. Soeur adoptive/demie-soeur d’Arthur, leur relation n’a pas été assez explorée à mon goût. Amie de Merlin, puis ennemie jurée du sorcier de Camelot, sans savoir que c’est lui. Amie de Gwen aussi, lorsqu’elle était au château. Devient l’alliée de pas mal de bad guys au cours des épisodes, dont notablement Mordred. Fanon : on a du Morgana/Gwen, Morgana/Merlin me semble

Anna (Kaamelott) : Son ambition dans la vie : tuer Arthur pour venger son père, tué par celui d’Arthur. Caractère dur, déterminée, triste dirais-je.

On la voit en fait très peu dans la série. Sa détermination m’a marqué, elle est en colère, oui, mais c’est une colère froide. La pire. Du genre à tenter de vous poignarder dans une taverne.

J’aimerais en dire beaucoup plus sur elle...

Relation : Fille d’Ygerne, femme du roi Loth (m’enfin ils peuvent pas se piffrer), mère de Gauvain. Demie-soeur d’Arthur.

la fée Morgane (Kaamelott) : Très peu vue dans la série, mais très classe. Désabusée. Passeuse des morts vers l'île d’Avalon (j’avoue j’ai cherché…) Sarcasme queen.

Points communs : les 2 sœurs finissent par détester leur frère et Uther. La fée K!Morgane et M!Morgana ont des capacités magiques

Différences : La fée n’a pas grand chose à voir avec les autres. Les 2 sœurs d’Arthur n’ont pas le même parent commun avec Arthur. K!Anna n’a pas dit son dernier mot. Elle prendra le temps de la réflexion, tout en agissant parfois de manière impulsive (cf sa tentative d’assassinat de son frère). M!Morgana est plus impulsive tout le temps, et dans la rage/colère pure. K!Anna est dans la détermination. Elle a bien pris le temps de faire mûrir sa haine. Je les opposerais dans leur colère : M!Morgana a une colère “chaude”, K!Anna a la colère “froide”

Gwen/Guenièvre sous le cut

Guinevere/Gwen (BBC Merlin) : servante/dame de compagnie de Morgana au château au début de la série. Adorable. Courageuse. Prête à beaucoup pour aider les autres (dont Merlin, Arthur...) Finit par tomber amoureuse d’Arthur, même si ses sentiments pour Lancelot la troublent un bon moment. Devient Reine après avoir épousé Arthur, et est la Endgame Queen.

Gwen évolue beaucoup dans la série. Elle commence comme une jeune fille très sympathique et mignonne, amusante, légère, proche de Merlin, et très attachante. Rien de tout ça ne change en fait, mais elle deviendra plus sérieuse, plus déterminée, plus forte, et on explorera son personnage de pas mal de façon. La douleur de la perte de son père, ses amours, ses aventures lorsqu’elle s’absente de Camelot, ses capacités à sa battre (me semble, hein ?) et à réfléchir, le retour de son frère après des années d’absence et sa perte à nouveau, et plus généralement, elle devient la Reine quand elle épouse Arthur. Ça demande un poil d’adaptation...

Relationship : Canon : son père Tom meurt assez rapidement. Proche de Morgana, très bonne amie de Merlin, épouse Arthur. A un frère Elyan. Fanon : Gwen/Morgana, Gwen/Lancelot, Gwen/Merlin

Start like that/end like that :

Guenièvre (Kaamelott) : princesse de Carmélide, s’est retrouvée dans un mariage arrangé avec celui qui sera le Roi de Bretagne => Reine de Bretagne. La candeur, la naïveté. Voudrait juste qu’on l’apprécie à sa juste valeur. Se barre avec Lancelot quand il lui donne l’impression qu’il l’aimera mais se rend vite compte qu’il ne lui donnera pas ce dont elle a besoin. Soutient son mari.

Guenièvre est too precious for this world, et vraiment, mais que quelqu’un lui fasse un câlin quoi ! Elle a été mariée jeune (en tout cas dans sa tête, on connaît pas vraiment les âges des gens dans cette série... c’est ça aussi de faire des prequels) et sans beaucoup de connaissances des choses de l’amour (physique et émotionnel je dirais). Et vu qu’Arthur a pas du tout prévu de l’aider, on a un joli petit couple dysfonctionnel (beaucoup plus fonctionnel dans le livre V si vous voulez mon avis, mais c’est pas encore ça). Elle gagne en profondeur dans les saisons, et passe de la cruche à l’épaule sur laquelle Arthur pourrait se reposer. J’attends avec impatience de voir son évolution dans le film

Relations : ses parents Léodagan et Séli, son frère Yvain. Son mari Arthur qu’elle aime vraiment (amoureuse ? j’en suis pas sûre. Mais d’une façon ou d’une autre, elle l’aime).

Points communs : leur gentillesse. Leur beauté (très subjectif comme critère).

Différences : Leur amour pour Arthur, présent dans les 2 cas à mon avis, mais bien différent. M!Gwen est quand même plus dégourdie, et est de “basse extraction”, tandis que K!Guenièvre est née noble et avec un vague mépris de classe
