AU where Danny never tells Sam and Tucker about the portal accident but they eventually put together the pieces after Danny starts acting hella weird. Especially around his parents.

They eventually figure it out but can't seem to decide whether their friend is actually dead or if there's something else going on. They inadvertently become ghost experts while playing detective, while also simultaneously trying their best to help Danny from the shadows without him finding out that they found out.

Bonus points if they have to fend off Jazz with a stick cause she knows something's up and she knows that Sam and Tucker know but Sam and Tucker keep covering their tracks and doing their best to throw her off the scent.

Bonus, bonus points if Jazz knows that there's something very messed up going on and desperately wants to know what happened to her brother but Sam and Tucker think she's on her parent's side and are convinced that she'll just report back to them if she ever finds out.

Bonus, bonus, bonus points! if Jazz just has this deep, gut-wrenching feeling that she can't tell her parents about her suspicions and that there's something increasingly disturbing about both her parents and Danny's behaviour as well as how the three of them interact after the portal got turned on. She does her best to keep her parent's attention off of Danny, which kinda helps but also inadvertently gets in the way of Sam and Tucker's helping.

Bonus, bonus, bonus, bonus points!!!!! if Maddie and Jack have acquired some very mild ecto contamination from being in such close proximity with the portal on a daily basis and their continued exposure is making them slowly exhibit Obsession-like behaviours about their work and research, which consequentially results in their attitudes/behaviours becoming increasingly more disturbing and concerning from an outside perspective.

“How do I look?”

“What was that, babe?”

Buck stuck his head around the bathroom door. Tommy was standing in front of the mirror, plucking nervously at his shirt.

“How do I look? Do I look okay?” he repeated, turning toward Buck.

“Yes? You look fine?” Buck said, coming into the bathroom. “You know I like this shirt, it brings out your eyes. Why do you ask?”

“This is the first time I’m meeting her. I have to make a good impression.”

“Who, Maddie?” Buck asked, confused. “What are you talking about, you’ve met her. Like, twice now. She thinks you’re great, Tommy, you know that.”

“Not Maddie. Jee-Yun,” Tommy said, as if it were obvious. “Your niece.”

Buck couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped him, and Tommy fixed him with a look.

“I mean it,” he said. “Do I look… approachable? I don’t have any nieces or nephews, I don’t know how to interact with little kids. Should I put on a t shirt instead?”

“Tommy. Babe,” Buck said, running his hands down his boyfriend’s chest and resting them on his hips. “You look fine. I cannot stress enough that Jee does not care. I mean, maybe if you showed up in a unicorn onesie that would score some points – she’s in a big unicorn phase right now. But outside of that? It literally doesn’t matter.”

Tommy got a speculative look on his face, like he was suddenly considering the logistics of finding a unicorn onesie at short notice that would fit a 6’2” firefighter, and Buck laughed again.

“Look,” he said. “My number one tip for hanging out with Jee-Yun? Or any kid, really. Just – treat her like a human being. You know, she’s not a doll, she’s not a prop. Ask her questions and listen to what she says. Play pretend. If she asks you to read a book, do the voices. But don’t stress.” He squeezed Tommy’s hips. “Seriously. They can sense that. Like sharks with blood in the water.”

“That is not helping.”

Several hours later, Tommy was sitting on the floor of Maddie and Chimney’s living room. A very elaborate tea party was spread out on the coffee table; he and Jee-Yun were both wearing sparkly pink plastic tiaras, and Tommy also had a purple feather boa draped across his broad shoulders.

Chim was in the kitchen, wrangling the dinner dishes, and Buck and Maddie were sitting at the dining table nursing glasses of wine.

“I think he’s a natural,” Maddie said conspiratorially, leaning toward her brother. “Look at them together.”

“Yeah,” said Buck. “I had a feeling he would be.”

“Your Majesty,” said Tommy, voice dripping with faux outrage. “Are you seriously telling me that you think the rainbow cupcakes taste better than the sprinkle ice cream?”

“Nooo!” cackled Jee-Yun. “Uncle Tommy! I maked you rainbow ice cream and spicy cupcakes!”

“Ohhh!”

Across the room, Tommy hissed and fanned his mouth as though he’d just downed a spoonful of sriracha.

Uncle Tommy, mouthed Maddie in delight, and I know, mouthed Buck back.

“Spicy cupcakes!” Tommy gasped. “My queen! How could you!”

“You’d better keep him around,” Maddie said fondly.

“I plan to,” Buck said with a smile.

But also like. A thought I've been having a lot lately is that I used to call myself asexual and thought I might possibly even be aroace because I just didn't feel a lot of romantic attraction towards people save for a few exceptions and when I did actually try to get into dating sexuality felt like some sort of chore. And me IDing as ace was SUCH a big thing for some reason, I remember having so many discussions about how I'm denying myself so much etc. Well as it turns out I was SAd and that was a coping mechanism but like. Being ace wasn't what harmed me. What harmed me was people constantly telling me off for it. Even if it is actually a phase, that doesn't make it any less valid and important in your journey to find yourself, you know? Without ace people showing me it was okay to have a relationship without sex I wouldn't have ever been in a relationship where I felt comfortable setting boundaries from the beginning, and I would probably just have let potential partners go for it without consideration for my own wellbeing, because I couldn't imagine physical intimacy as a space where I was in control.

It occurs to Eddie later this is the closest he’s ever been to punching a superior.

It doesn’t so much surprise him that he felt this way, rather that he didn’t feel as strongly as this before. There were many moments in the army – hell, in the Dairy Freeze he worked in the summers in high school – where the inclination would’ve made much more sense than a figure he viewed as family. However, in the end, Eddie supposes it was inevitable. Inevitable that he’s feeling Bobby’s hands grip against his turnout, still askew and half-off where Chimney once was, hands running up his chest while he checked for injuries. Chimney is long gone, sprinting to where Hen cries out, the panic in her voice palpable and Eddie only has one functioning ear at the moment.

All of that means nothing to him, really.

Instead, he’s unilaterally focused on the helmet sitting on the ground as innocently as if someone placed it there. Rain, crashing against the visor, the flashlight still on and flickering in the storm. A helmet that should be on the head of the figure collapsed on the ground yards away. It’s too far. Too far for a helmet to be away from the head it’s meant to protect. It’s all Eddie can see in the moment, because he thinks as soon as he lifts his gaze, everything will shift. He feels Bobby’s grip on his shoulder and it digs painfully in his skin, the whisper of a bullet in his ear with no figure standing in front of him.

For the first time since he can remember, Eddie feels alone.
