It's soon time for the best event of my creative year – Kyndelsmarknad i Lykttändargränd – when my friends and I come together to create a magical winter fair world in Malmö. Once upon a time sprawling from a Harry Potter larp birthday party for a little girl, it has grown into a celebration of magical worlds and longing to visit the world of books and movies. Here you are invited to step in to a world of witches, wizards, ghosts, trolls, goblins... and thousands do so every year. I am honored to be tasked to make the posters, the paintings and layout, with title and logo by my friend the talented calligrapher Peter Svärd. These are my three best posters! (Also Hello to my new followers finding your way here from Neil Gaiman's reblog of my All Hallow's Read book monster. You are most welcome!)

UMK 2024 Song Review - Windows95man
The hype is very real around Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK), the Finnish national selection for Eurovision and the race to Malmö continues with another entry!
Windows95man - No Rules!
youtube
Windows95man is a shy family man from the Finnish capital area who's made a name for himself as multitalented entertainer. The man is a visual artist and a photographer plus owns his own gallery in Helsinki but is the best known aka Windows95man. It all started from Youtube but quickly grew to become famous as a DJ who wears cut off shorts (magic shorts according to him) and Windows95 t-shirt.
He represents the same liberated crazy spirit as Käärijä last year. He does a lot of things that are not seen suitable for a Finnish man of his age in style and in music and feels no shame of doing so! Good for him!
No Rules is his first song in which he collaborates with Henri Piispanen who delivers the vocals.
Tumblr media
No rules is a throwback from the 90's which according to Windows95man influenced his musical style the most (as born in the mid 80's). Musically this is part of the eurodance genre and reminds many of E-Type.
Musically it holds all the necessary elements that a proper 90's banger needs and Piispanen impresses with his high notes (can he deliver live?). However, what is a strong point for No Rules can be also its death.
This is a nice, funny, catchy add to UMK24 selection but doesn't really meet the high quality of the previous songs, does it. This can be seen as a joke entry especially with the music video which reminds me a sketch on TV. Musically this can be quite irritating for many. It doesn't offer anything new and some listeners might tune off before the song has reached its 3-minute run.
Last year Portion Boys delivered a similar entry but still bringing their own musical value to the table. I just don't see No Rules doing the same despite of possibly becoming a guilty pleasure for some UMK fans. In Eurovision this is something what we could have sent a decade ago but now UMK as Eurovision has topped its game since. Wiwibloggs were on point with their a Nokia reference - it's nice to down a memory lane for a moment but would someone still buy one? No.
This is still a decent first single and I hope nothing but the best and love in the future!
What do you think of the fifth UMK24 track and would you vote for Windows95man to go all the way to Malmö? UMK final takes place on February 10th!

Heading into evening, we caught a bus into central Malmö to brave the cobblestones around Triangeln.
The main mission objective: to finally get set up with new glasses!
It's been worse to try to wear my existing prescription since that surgery, with a big enough change in that eye that the Now Very Wrong Lens is making me seasick and triggering migraines. So I've mostly just been going around without any.
Tumblr media
Neither of us was sure where to go, so I decided to try out Eyes + More this time. They are NOT Specsavers, which is all over the place in Sweden too. Plus, they're offering decent-looking package deals which include the option of progressive lenses for less than we would end up shelling out elsewhere. Because I am old and needing them these days. 🥴
Also, they are offering 4-pair package deals to split between two people. He was also needing new glasses, so may as well try there. We went ahead and booked back-to-back exam appointments.
Other than trying to operate on Language Mode: Difficult in a rather busy optical shop with shitty hearing in the first place, it started off pretty well. I browsed and found several good frame candidates while Mr. C went back for his vision exam.
Then it was my turn. Which also started out fine. Especially after I finally cried uncle and fessed up about my limited Swedish skills. (Which no doubt were becoming rather obvious, even before I opened my mouth for more than a few basic phrases. 🙄)
Went through the whole lens-flipping routine and all--and then complications ensued!
Tumblr media
This is my current prescription, y'all.
The astigmatism had stayed about the same, at least. With that aftermarket lens replacement, though? They did indeed make my right eye significantly less nearsighted. As in, no correction required for distance vision at all. (Previously, it was just a little worse than the other one. The sudden change still feels weird as hell, after all these years.)
So yeah, the upshot is that now I am pretty damned nearsighted in one eye, and not at all in the other. Easy enough to fix with new prescription lenses, right?
Hahaha, NOPE. 😵
That degree of difference is evidently optically impossible to correct with glasses, unless you want some gnarly double vision. As the optometrist demonstrated with these babies.
Tumblr media
I wondered why she was doing whatever trial lens magic that caused the freaky double vision, and then asking me about it. Then she basically just "yupped!", and explained the situation. 😩
I had kinda already had to wonder about some of the questions she was asking about the surgery, who did it, and whether I was sure they weren't planning to do something on the other side too. But indeed, all was explained soon enough.
She was obviously of the experienced professional opinion that some questionable decisions were made there. Trying to be at least semi-diplomatic about it or not. Seemed pretty horrified, tbqh.
So yeah, no new glasses for me right yet!
The current plan is to do as the optometrist strongly recommended, and Mr. C is going to try to get the eye surgery clinic on the phone ASAP tomorrow.
I am honestly still too worn out and brain fried to have looked into possible options yet. That will have to wait at least until later tonight.
Right offhand, I would rather end up having to pay for LASIK or similar out of pocket than let the same university clinic fuck around any more with my other eye if I can help it at all. That may well end up being my best bet, but we'll have to see.

This evening in 2020 the tickets for Disney On Ice 8th of february at Malmö Arena was booked. It echoes in my head so often, that if only I had not wanted to see it then maybe Lullaby had still been here now. It was the first and only time I saw Disney On Ice. Never would it be possible again but it was so very magical. So unreal to see the characters, especially Frozen❄️

The top seven sites in Sweden for tourists
Tumblr media
Travelers are drawn to Sweden, a mesmerizing jewel of the Nordic region, by its stunning natural scenery and rich cultural legacy. This Scandinavian country has much to offer every kind of tourist, from the colourful metropolis of Stockholm to the Arctic beauties of Kiruna. Start your journey in Stockholm, a charming city spread over several linked islands. Take in the seafaring treasures of the Vasa Museum while strolling around Gamla Stan's cobbled alleyways. Travel west to Gothenburg, where urban sophistication and seaside beauty combine to provide the ideal environment for both entertainment and leisure.
Malmö is a city that embraces variety and innovative architecture and is located farther south. Don't overlook the Turning Torso, a contemporary wonder that dominates the skyline. See the unique Icehotel and pursue the Northern Lights on an Arctic adventure by traveling north to Kiruna. Step foot in Visby on Gotland for a trip back in time to the Middle Ages. Historic landmarks and botanical gardens are worth seeing in Uppsala, a city known for its scholarly elegance. Finally, take a trip to Fårö, a nature lover's paradise northeast of Gotland with immaculate beaches and tranquil surroundings. The best tourist destinations in Sweden provide a once-in-a-lifetime journey through the country's natural beauty, history, and culture.
Here are some sites in Sweden for tourists
1. Stockholm, the nation's capital: Sweden's capital, Stockholm, is a bustling city constructed on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges. Start your adventure in Gamla Stan, the ancient town, where colorful buildings holding stores, cafes, and museums are tucked away along cobblestone lanes. A remarkable surviving 17th-century battleship may be found at the Vasa Museum, which is also home to the Royal Palace. Discover Södermalm, the contemporary side of Stockholm, a neighborhood renowned for its hipster atmosphere, chic stores, and expansive views. A boat trip of the more than 30,000-island archipelago provides a special viewpoint of this magnificent metropolis.
2. Gothenburg: A Gem of the Coast: Gothenburg, the second-largest city in Sweden, is a mesmerizing blend of nautical charm and cosmopolitan style. It is situated on the west coast. Wander around the Avenyn, the main thoroughfare in the city, which is surrounded by eateries and stores. Liseberg, one of the biggest theme parks in Europe, offers exhilarating rides and fun activities for the whole family. See the Fish Church (Feskekörka) and the Haga neighborhood, which is renowned for its quaint wooden homes and mouthwatering cinnamon buns, for a taste of the local way of life. Due to Gothenburg's close proximity to the archipelago, island-hopping and visiting the breathtaking coastal scenery are both possible.
3. Malmö: A Cross-Cultural Fusion: The southernmost city of Sweden, Malmö, presents a distinctive fusion of Swedish and foreign influences. Commence your tour with the towering, twisted Turning Torso, which commands attention from the skyline. Take a stroll around the lovely homes and cobblestone lanes of the old Gamla Väster (Old West) neighborhood. Malmö is renowned for its inventive food culture, so be sure to visit the Möllevångstorget market to enjoy some local fare. Because of the city's closeness to Denmark, traveling to Copenhagen for the day across the Öresund Bridge is simple.
4. Kiruna: The Adventure in the Arctic: Visit Kiruna in Lapland, Sweden, to get a taste of its most northern delights. Kiruna, well-known for its breathtaking natural phenomena, is a great place to see the Northern Lights. Built completely of ice and snow, the Icehotel provides a distinctive and remarkable lodging experience. Enjoy the beauty of the Arctic by going on snowmobile or dog-sledding adventures. Experience the midnight sun and take in the expansive hiking paths and stunning scenery of Abisko National Park throughout the summer months.
5. Visby: Medieval Magic on Gotland: A trip back in time, the medieval town of Visby is situated on the island of Gotland and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visby, with its well-preserved medieval fortifications, has picturesque rose-covered houses, cobblestone alleys, and remnants of the medieval past. Discover the rich history of the island by visiting the Gotland Museum. Gotland comes alive in the summer with activities like Medieval Week, when residents and guests dress historically, evoking a vibrant medieval ambiance.
6. Uppsala: intellectual elegance: Uppsala, the fourth-largest city in Sweden, embodies a singular blend of historical significance and intellectual beauty. See the largest cathedral in Scandinavia, Uppsala Cathedral, and the university, which was established in 1477. Explore the botanical gardens on foot or unwind by the Fyris River. The Augsburg Art Cabinet, a Renaissance artistic miracle, is housed at the Gustavianum Museum. Another well-known event in Uppsala is the yearly Valborg celebration, where residents get together with bonfires and activities to greet spring.
 7. Faro, on Gotland—a calm haven for nature lovers: Faro is a tranquil island northeast of Gotland. Fårö has striking coastline scenery and is well-known for its limestone structures, which include the Digerhuvud Sea Stacks and Langhammars. The island's immaculate beaches, such as Sudersand, are tranquil and welcoming. Discover the famous Gamle Hamn, an old-world fishing port. For those looking for seclusion, unspoiled beauty, and a respite from the busy city life, Fårö is the perfect place to visit.
The memories weaved from the many landscapes and rich cultural heritage of this enchanted country will endure as treasured mementos when your Swedish experience comes to an end. Sweden has created a diverse array of experiences, ranging from the energetic metropolitan charm of Stockholm to the breathtaking Arctic beauties of Kiruna. When one looks back on the trip, the historic appeal of Stockholm is captured by the cobblestone streets and the marine wonders of the Vasa Museum. Travel back in time and see the medieval enchantment of Visby on Gotland, the seaside treasure of Gothenburg, and the cultural melting pot of Malmö.
A strange connection to nature is provided by Kiruna's Arctic excursions and the potential to see the Northern Lights. The calm refuge of Fårö and the intellectual elegance of Uppsala finish the Swedish trip, leaving a lasting impression on each visitor. For those planning trips to Sweden in the future, getting a Sweden tourist visa from India opens the door to this magical country in Scandinavia. When you say goodbye to Sweden, the memories of its modern cities, untamed Arctic landscape, and ancient legends will stay with you, provoking the urge to visit this alluring place again. Sweden guarantees that your trip is not just a visit but a once-in-a-lifetime love affair with Scandinavia. Sweden is a country where history meets innovation and nature melds with culture.

"Again she is a coach, she is serious, she will make tough calls and be ruthless when needed. She will select the best players, not Nilla’s best friend from her old team. She is a coach not a grandma there to provide them with endless praise regardless of performance and only coddle them."
Nilla above all (she's played in Wolfsburg with the strict German hierarchy and more direct communication, which she btw prefers) and most people understand this is how elite football works.
Competition for the spots on a squad and a starting XI doesn't justify to be rude to players off the pitch... And it doesn't justify to not show up at a morning team meeting when Pia was supposed to go through the tactics because she'd stayed up late and hadn't slept well. So unprofessional. Also, it doesn't justify to emotionally blackmail a player to choose between the national team or go with her wife to the clinic when she tries to get pregnant, implying if it continued like that the spot on the national team could be at risk.
On the airplane Pia made sure her favs that she'd pointed out as stars on the team (Nilla was one of them), sat comfortably in their chairs when she walked by. But when she passed Berglund she said "You I don't give a damn shit about!" If Pia made a joke it wasn't appropriate and if she didn't that isn't an acceptable behaviour. You don't say that when you're in a position of power. Berglund wasn't one of Pia's favs, she was in and out of her squads.
And for the record Berglund is NOT Nilla's best friend or an old club team mate. Berglund played in Umeå when Nilla played in then Ldb Malmö and after that Linköping before she went to Wolfsburg. By the time Berglund went to Rosengård from Umeå (then Psg, Gothenburg and back to Rosengård), Nilla was long gone. After they'd both returned to play in Sweden they weren't club team mates then either.
Pia's coaching philosophy with building the team around stars works in USA and Brazil but isn't ideal for Sweden. Under Pia, Sweden dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since the rankings for women's national teams started. For the home Euro 2013 she inherited Dennerby's squad that'd won the World Cup bronze 2011. That was the main reason Sweden reached the semi. She didn't have any time to change much in the 9 months and few camps before the championship started. World Cup 2015 no medal. Olympics 2016 barely scraped by and defended the way to the final. Euro 2017 no medal.
Pia wanted to play a certain kind of football but didn't have the player material for it. She never found the best suited formation or a system that made the team perform at its best. You can't try to fit square pegs into round holes. The very best coaches look at what is possible to do with the player material at hand and build a system from that, rather than from a personal preference what kind of football they want their teams to play but their players aren't able to.
Schelin carried the team on her back with individual performances to bail Sweden out. The link up in the Euro 2013 between Schelin and Asllani, quickly named Schelani, was magical to see and Sweden played fast attacking football (too fast according to Pia). Schelin and Asllani had chemistry and played beautiful football together as the two top forwards.
It's beyond me why Pia decided to not keep what worked so well and instead tried to find another forward partner to Schelin, which she never fully did. Stina worked ok but not nearly as great with Schelin as Asllani did. Frido didn't work with Schelin at all. Hammarlund was never around enough to become a real alternative before she became long time injured. Hurtig had just recieved her first call up and a first cap in 2015 when she became long time injured. She had feet surgery and tried to get back in time for Euro 2017. She got back shortly before the squad announcement but Pia decided it was better to keep Hurtig healthy for the future. So she was never really tested as Schelin's forward partner.
It is quite interesting in the light of Nilla speaking out and spekaing up now, that Seger several years ago said if Pia had continued as Sweden's head coach she'd probably quit. Whether she meant quit football or the national team wasn't clear. It's also quite interesting that Peter has expressed the family is the most important. He's completely ok with players decline some camps, championships even, for family reasons. His players doesn't have to be afraid they'll risk their spots on the national team just because they stay home with their families at times. They don't need to worry when they call him to say they need to decline a call up.
yea was very obvious during the 2017 euros that no one had any idea what was going on because it just felt like there was no plan and it was pretty obvious she had pretty much lost the dressing room. and yea peter in the best way to describe he's just chill he creates this environment with his staff that yeah the players feel like if they need to they can step away from camp to be with their families at times and he puts the welfare of the player above the actual games.
Like just thinking of one recently off the top of my head if P hadn't gotten injured the night before I'm 90% confident saying Magda would have played in that Australia game.

Death And Vanilla: Out For Magic
Long time fan of library electronica masters Death and Vanilla and today their latest album drops. Flicker LP is available on limited indies only yellow vinyl from their bandcamp
Death and Vanilla return with ‘Flicker’, presenting their unique pop music that defies categorisation. Housed in a beautifully austere post-ironic de-constructed sleeve; ‘Flicker’ is a modern reflection on these difficult times. World crises notwithstanding, they return reborn, re-arranged and revitalised after assimilating dub reggae, the motorik spirals of Can, the modal meander of Philip Glass and The Cure’s dreamier pop sounds; plus the twice removed symphonic ambience of Spiritualized and Talking Heads under heavy manners from Brian Eno. By osmosis their period of transition since 2019’s much darker ‘Are You A Dreamer?’ has hatched new eclectic electronica anthems riddled with melody lines, and layered for lush love.
Forming in Malmö, Sweden, Death And Vanilla gravitated towards vintage musical equipment; from vibraphone, organ and mellotron, to tremolo guitar and Moog synthesisers. Soaking up soundtracks from the 60s and 70s, listening to library music, kosmiche, French Ye-ye pop and 60s psych, Marleen Nilsson, Anders Hansson and Magnus Bodin were fashioned by the city’s austere industrial past and flat pack present, and all in the shadow of the Orsesund Bridge that links their dreamworld to mainland Europe and a darker reality.
“Deploying vintage instruments in their quest for melancholic utopia.” Electronic Sound
Death And Vanilla at once sound like everything is possible; but nothing else at all. There is a flicker of hope for everyone.
