By the time the natural ebb and flow of the party had pushed them into a corner secluded enough that they could hear one another over the din of bad music, excited voices, and - inexplicably - what sounded to be a Party City CD of spooky sound effects played on loop, Varric was juuust sober enough to know there were better ways to say what he needed to say...and juuust tipsy enough not to care.

"I can't wait to get you home and out of that costume," he said, giving Hawke (and Isabela) enough time to feign scandalized gasps before smirking himself and continuing, "I mean that literally: You look like...well, I think we all know what you look like."

"No Varric, please," Hawke grinned, setting her elbows down onto a nearby table for the sole purpose of striking the most upsettingly provocative pose she could manage, "tell me what I look like - don't spare any lurid details!"

"She's going to kill you when she gets here, I hope you know that," he sighed, shaking his head to play up the part as the deeply disapproving partner when really he was already gearing himself up to remember the moment as best he could (if only for the sake of his next project, of course).

"I can't fathom what you might be talking about," Isabela drawled around the straw of her drink, "I mean, it's hardly as though Hawke's the first person to squeeze themselves into a sexy cop getup and make a fool of themselves...and really, I'm surprised at you, Varric, considering who she is as a person, the irony alone is - "
