summer heat.
ᯓᡣ𐭩 description . . .
・:〃➜ with how hot the summer is getting, your favorite boys need some way to cool down and relax . . . preferably with you by their side.
ᯓᡣ𐭩 ft. HAIKYUU BOYS – kenma, hinata, and suna.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
KENMA.
it doesn't take long for kenma to start heaving, panting, and sweating underneath the heat of the deadly hot rays of the sun. he doesn't think he can last 5 more minutes under the sun with how hot the summer's been, even under the shade of the cute cat-themed parasol you bought for the two of you at the beach, this boy is still sweating an awful lot, reaching for your somehow cool, pool of melted ice for a cooler, for a pack of apple juice.
"is there... any more left..." your pudding haired boyfriend heaved with a raspy voice, clenching to the crumpled, empty plastic juice packet. you look into the box full of melted ice and wince as you break the news to him that he just drank his last apple juice box. the poor boy whimpers silently as he feels the sweat pool on the back of his shirt, and since you felt bad, you got up and dusted the sand off your lap, your hand extended out to him as the heat starts to get to him.
"a swim...?" he meekly repeats after you, his cheeks flushing with warmth rushing to his face, either from embarrassment or from the intense heat of the sun. you nod as you wait for his answer, with him taking your hand weakly, slowly pulling you closer to him with a smile. "...alright, alright, i'll take a dip in the water... but just a few minutes of cuddles...?" he pleads, his golden almond eyes begging for you to hold him to keep him from falling apart from the sheer ruthlessness of the heat.
HINATA.
hinata isn't usually one to complain about the weather, but with the rise of the past week's temperature, he's been pretty much exhausted every time he goes out; and it's a big bummer, because he so badly wants to take you out on a date and enjoy some sceneries together, go to the beach, have a nice dinner with you... but the heat makes you both too lazy to get out of the house.
he can't emphasize to you how much he wants to go out with you, while being in front of the fan, sweating a storm. you try to reassure him and tell him you two don't have to go out to enjoy each other's company, but your little tangerine wants the best date for you after being abroad for a long while and having to focus on his volleyball career and training months prior.
while your sunshine sulks about not being able to take you out, you scoop up a couple of bowls of ice cream for the two of you, handing one of the bowls to him. you explain to him that, even though you also want to go out with him, you don't need all those fancy outings to be happy with him–you're more than happy sharing some ice cream with him on a hot day.
you have no idea just how happy you made him, because it was like the clouds parted from the sun, and the room got five times warmer with the growth of his shining smile. "y-yeah! i guess i feel the same way too... i mean, all i want is to make you happy, the where doesn't really matter, all that matters to me is your happiness, love." he beams, and though you try to warn him his ice cream will melt, he doesn't mind, because his ice cream will stay sweet no matter how melty it'll get; for now, all he wants to focus on is you and how adorable you look eating up your ice cream... maybe hoping to feed you some on your spoon.
SUNA.
your boyfriend suna is usually calm, cool, and collected; making it hard for you to know what it is he wants or is feeling. but the nasty highs the temperature outside is reaching brings out the hidden character of your usually composed boyfriend, though in a manner you wouldn't expect.
it's a no-brainer that the heat can make someone a bit lazy to move their body to get things done, and your boy understands that too much, that he wants you to give yourself a break and cool off for a little bit from your chores at home and suffer from the intense heat.
and how would he get you to do that? by offering the perfect at home date between you two in your room–with a tv show to binge, a closet full of snacks, a minifridge full of cool drinks, and the AC on blast with him and your pillows and stuffed animals waiting for you.
"hey, um..." he calls out to you in his gravelly voice, gently grabbing your wrist, pulling you closer to him. his pale green eyes gazing at you, with neediness in those orbs of his. "i turned on the AC, and since, y'know, that recent show you've wanted to binge just released all episodes available, and the snack bar we have in our room is stacked up... why not take a break from the chores and just chill out with me, babe?" and how could you say no to his desperate pleading face?

As much as he despised when his sister’s boyfriend became all mushy around his girlfriend, Sachiro quickly understood the sentiment when he met you. There was nothing he wouldn’t do, no depths he wouldn’t stoop to, if it meant you’d give him a smile.
The sun was scorching hot but the well loved, slightly off-center parasol he buried deep in the sand kept you in the shade. In the glistening water kids played in the shallows under the watchful eyes of their parents and surfers tried their best to catch the next wave. Sandcastles were being build, seashells collected and beach hats chased, carried away by a cheerful breeze.
“I’m so glad we’re a couple.”, he said, stretching happily on the large blanket.
“Yeah? Why is that?”, you grinned and over the rim of your sunglasses gave him a questioning look.
“Because I don’t have to feel like a creep for staring at you in that bikini.”
“Is it not too revealing?”
“On the contrary.” He leaned closer to you, setting a little kiss on the shell of your ear before saying, “If it were up to me it could be even smaller.”
You blushed and wrapped the sheer beach kimono closer to your body. He pouted and sneakily brushed back the fabric to reveal your pudgy tummy and temptingly plush thigh.
“You know, now that I think about it… it does reveal quite a lot…”, he said slowly.
You raised a brow, quite familiar with this certain tone.
“I wouldn’t want you to burn. Let me reapply some lotion, princess.”
With pursed lips you made it a point to remove the kimono slowly, sliding it off your shoulder with a little extra sass, earning you a low whistle, which sent you both into a little laughing fit.
You lay on your stomach, crossing your legs and waited with your head resting on folded arms.
“Now this is just rudely in the way.”, Sachiro noted and pulled at the string on your back.
Worried you’d be exposed if you squirmed, you stayed put and opted for a playfully shocked, “Hey!”
“Just making sure, I’m not getting anything on your new piece, babe.” With that excused he climbed on top of you, his knees on either side of waist and leaned down to set a kiss on your shoulder.
He sighed contently as he rubbed a bit of lotion onto his palms, “I love summer.” His large hands began massaging your back, having you close your eyes in bliss.
“By the way, my brother asked if he can join us for dinner next week with his wife. Is that okay with you?”, he wondered as he worked.
“Oh yeah, of course! We haven’t seen them in ages. Is his leg doing better?”
You sucked in a breath when his fingers brushed the sides of your breasts as if on accident.
“Yeah, he’ll be able to play the next match no problem. He just wants to be cautious that’s why he sat the last one out. Although I do have to say that the Adlers have been doing well without him, too. And I fully intend to tell him that when we see him.” You could hear his mischievous smirk.
He all but grabbed your perfectly soft hips under the guise of applying more lotion, squeezing and… pressing himself further against you. You had been in this exact position last night in the hotel and nothing good could come of it in public.
“What is it, baby? You got so quiet.”, he teased.

five times ranma didn't say i love you and the one time he didn't need to:
ao3 | ff.net ship: ranma/akane rating: general audience words: 8,889
summary:
Ranma and Akane throughout their relationship in which they wondered about each other, and the one time they didn't need to anymore.
Ranma had agreed to help her run errands only because she had promised a treat afterwards, usually consisting of a large fruit parfait cup, which he was really good at finishing entirely. But now, as they walked among the sea of people on such a hot day, he wondered if it was worth it.
Akane seemed to be simply shopping, stopping constantly to observe hair jewelry and other trinkets that hadn’t really caught much of his attention. Nonetheless, he had followed her into endless stores, and waited patiently as she tried on clothes, unnecessarily so. The clothes were going to fit the way they did, why did she have a need to observe herself in the mirror? She was box-shaped, with hips too wide and not enough on the northern region to help balance it out; or so, he tried to convince himself.
Which was why, a few stores ago, when Akane had asked him for his opinion about a dress she was on the fence about, he didn’t say much. When she stepped out, he felt his chest clench up, his lungs suffocating as he felt the heat of his flushed cheeks overtake his face. The young woman had walked out in a strappy sundress, the creamy cloth embracing her wonderfully as she nervously pressed her clammy palms at the sides of her hips.
“It’s on sale, but I don’t know how I feel about it,” Akane found herself having to say out loud, as if explaining why she needed a second opinion, and he found it very out-of-character for her to ask him, but God, did she look good in it.
Ranma cleared his throat, trying to regain his nonchalant composure, acting like he didn’t care (because he shouldn't care, right?). “It don’t matter what you wear, with your bucket waist, ‘Kane.”
She sighed loudly, clearly annoyed as she rolled her eyes and walked back into the dressing room, murmuring some very creative words under her breath. “You’re such an idiot,” was what he did manage to catch just before she closed the curtain behind her.
What was she expecting? For him to admit that she did look a little cute in that dress? It wouldn’t have been a lie, but something about saying such words to Akane flustered him completely. He was really good about expressing his thoughts aloud, although he never gave much thought into what he was saying. Bickering had become almost like their secret language that helped flourish their fruitful relationship (whether he wanted to admit it or not). But he did find it so hard to admit such embarrassing things out loud.
Still, she bought the dress.
Kasumi had insisted on one of her parasols, tenderly shoving it into his hands, now very thankful as the summer sun would have been hitting them directly. And although they were only sweating just a tad, easily wiping it off their foreheads, he couldn’t help but notice the way Akane kept pushing bundles of hair behind her ears and over her shoulders, making him aware that its length just skimmed her shoulders.
Her hair was getting quite long; she was usually good at getting a trim on time, and he wondered if she had forgotten about it. She was wearing a clip at each side of her head, using it to help keep hair out of face, it seemed.
He watched her, her dainty hand picking up a claw clip bedazzled in gemstones, testing its grip as she squeezed it a few times before setting it back down and reaching for another. He held the parasol over them with one hand, and a few shopping bags in the other. He hadn’t offered to carry the shopping bags, but also when she’d ask him to hold them while she looked at something, he easily took them and hadn’t bothered to give them back to her even when she was done looking.
Her hand reached back to her hair, pushing it away from her neck once more, bothering him for some reason. She had always had short hair, for as long as he could remember; of course, their bizarre antics had gotten her long strands chopped initially, but she kept it short ever since. And it suited her well, he thought, and believed she should get a trim.
On the way home they had stopped for ice cream, Akane’s treat, as she promised. The parasol had been stuffed into one of the shopping bags, the sun was setting down and the evening heat wasn’t as intense. The cooling treat was definitely helping.
And he didn’t know what it was that convinced him it was a good idea to bring up her lengthen hair, but before he could stop himself, Ranma found himself asking, “When are you gettin' your haircut?”
“What?” Akane looked curiously over at him, one eyebrow lifted waiting for him to elaborate.
“I dunno,” he offered with shrugged shoulders, “it’s getting kinda’ long, don’t ‘cha think?”
“Oh,” Akane inhaled, thinking to herself momentarily before she smiled back at him, “I was thinking about letting it grow.”
“Why?”
Akane scoffed at the remarkably candid response, trying not to let it bother her. “What? You don’t think I’ll look good with long hair?”
“You’ve had short hair for the longest time now, why change all of a sudden?”
“Sometimes we need a change,” she smiled this time, sincerely, “a change of pace.” Her smile was small, but her cheeks were flushed and round, bouncing her glances from his face towards her melting ice cream cone.
He tried not to choke on the lump scraping at the back of his throat, suddenly very aware of himself, and the way Akane’s steps matched his own.
“It’s whatever, I guess.”
“Does it bother you?”
He looked back at her, her doe-like eyes seeping into him, knowing if she tried hard enough, she could read all of him and everything he had bottled up since they first met many years ago at the age of sixteen. And so, he looked away, scoffing again with a cocked eyebrow, “All I’m saying is short hair has always worked for ya’,” and he meant it.
She was leaning forward, trying to look more directly at his face with a childlike grin dancing at her cheeks, her knotted eyebrows challenging him to say more, but all he did was stick his tongue out at her as he blew a raspberry.
It had been a few days later when he noticed her short her, feeling an immense cramping feeling overflowing about his chest down to his lower abdomen.
Akane took a seat next to him during dinner, flashing him a small, but very mischievous, grin at him. Her cheeks were still round, and rosy, and her long eyelashes batting at him demanding attention. And he wanted to give her that attention, but he was still trying to remember how to breathe.
“Well?” she finally asked, combing her fingers through her dark hair, very silky and shiny.
Ranma cleared his throat, hoping his cheeks weren’t as red as they felt. He was trying to give off “cool”, and “calm”, but he knew she could see through him. “It looks good, Akane.”
She giggled quietly, unable to sustain her toothy grin as she said to him, “I know.”

Aiden/Lambert/Keira, modern au, pure fluff, sharing food (890 words)
something silly and self-indulgent written for a discord server prompt
It’s a hot summer day and they’d thought going to the beach on their day off was a good idea – and it would have been, had not about a billion other people had the same idea.
Lambert has not been to the beach since he was eleven years old and Vesemir took him and his brothers to the beach on one of those rare, blessed week-ends where he didn’t work. Lambert remembers splashing around in the water and daring his brothers to see who could hold his breath the longest underwater. The ice cream cart had wobbled over to their spot and the three of them had turned to Vesemir with eyes like war orphans’. “Absolutely not,” Vesemir had said without looking up from his crosswords.
Turns out splashing around in the water all day was good enough for eleven-year-olds but he feels a little self-conscious about it now, and besides, kids and middle-aged dads in khaki bathing shorts standing perfectly still knee-deep in water with their hands on their hips are already taking up all the space.
Aiden does manage to lure him to deeper waters and for a moment they’re busy racing each other, shamelessly cheating by catching the other’s foot and tickling him or grabbing each other by the leg and dragging him underwater, but it rapidly gets old and after an hour and a half, they’re back on dry land. Keira complains that they’re kicking up sand and dripping all over her like dogs after a bath, but she still makes room for them under her parasol. After that, it gets rather dull and Lambert starts feeling like seasoned meat on a barbecue grill. As a matter of fact, all three of them are sweating profusely, even Keira, who somehow still manages to look like a Barbie straight out of the box.
When the ice cream cart wheels past their spot, they all share a look.
“Let’s share an ice cream,” Aiden suggests.
“They only come in cones.”
“Yeah, and? It’s romantic,” he replies, grinning.
Keira scoffs. “It’s disgusting and unsanitary is what it is.”
“We’ve done more unsanitary stuff than this.”
“What kind of argument is that?” She turns to Lambert, looking for support.
He just shrugs. “I don’t feel like getting ice cream just for me.” He still kind of wants the ice cream, though.
She stares at him over the brim of her thick-rimmed sunglasses for a moment before capitulating, sighing. She fishes a ten-florin bill out of her wallet and holds it out between her index and middle fingers for Aiden to take. He snatches it and gives her a peck on the cheek.
“Thanks, mom.”
She slaps his ass on his way up. Lambert hides his smile behind a hand when Aiden yelps. He probably would have done the same.
They each choose a perfume: strawberry for Keira, chocolate mint for Lambert and peanut butter for Aiden. The ice cream starts melting before they’ve even sat back down on their towel, running down the cone in a glorious pink, green and brown mess.
Keira gets the first taste. After that, they pass the cone around in turns: Aiden makes a point of taking comically long licks whenever he can. It takes Keira and Lambert a while to notice, but when they do, Aiden has to sit out two of his turns to compensate. He looks at them like a kicked puppy while they enjoy their ice cream with overzealous noises of enjoyment until the mother of a nearby family glares at them.
Ice cream is running down their fingers in creamy, sticky streaks and it tastes everything Lambert thought ice cream from the ice cream cart would taste: cheap, too sugary and delicious.
In the end, Aiden sinks his teeth into the ice cream, raising exclamations of protest and indignation.
“Oh, Aiden, no!”
“You’re really bad at sharing,” Lambert says and he and Keira laugh when Aiden winces like someone who’s got a bad case of brain freeze.
“You guys just needed to eat faster,” Aiden replies when he’s recovered. “It’s survival of the fittest out here.” He holds out the remains of the ice cream to Keira.
“Oh no, you can keep it now. And don’t look so proud of yourself. You’re doing the dishes tonight.”
Aiden smiles, baring his teeth. “Worth it.”
“Terrible man.” She doesn’t bother keeping the fondness from her voice.
Later, Lambert takes Keira’s hand in his as they walk back to the car and Aiden slings an arm around her shoulders.
“Don’t touch me, I’m all gross and sweaty,” she warns him and he presses himself against her side, squishing his cheek against hers. She groans. “Dishes duty today and tomorrow.”
He laughs. Nothing gets to him.
They hiss as they settle into their seats, fake leather burning every inch of exposed skin.
“Am I the only one thinking the beach is kind of overrated?” Lambert says, brushing sand from between his toes. Keira smiles at him in the rearview mirror.
“Too many kids, man,” Aiden complains as he adjusts his hair with his fingers in the little mirror inside the sun visor.
“Let’s stay home next time.”
Keira drives them away and Lambert rests his head against the car door, swearing he can still feel the waves as he drifts to sleep.

So my fear that the new Trigun thing will be too smooth, pretty, lacking roughness in textures, edges and “mundane ugliness” in designs... and less westerny/postapo has been fulfilled...
It looks too cool in a way that doesnt feel right
*Like ok, the trailer showed us mostly just the beginnings which ARE more futuristic ... before it all slides into its own westerny/postapo decadence, but eee... I dunno...

Grrm family at the beach Part 1/2
We went to the sea for a vacation, so I felt the need to write some beach vacation inspired headcanons for the GRRM family plus (grand)kids. This post got very long, so I split it into two parts. The first one is the golden linage plus Nepheli and the second will be the Carians and the twins. Reblogs are appreciated. Part 2 needs to be polished but I can hopefully post it soon.
Tumblr media
Godfrey:
He is very excited to go to the beach and have an entire day to spent with his wife and children. After they arrive, he and Godwyn immediately rush throw themselves into the waves. Both have a swimming race to the far edge of the coast and back which Godfrey wins.
After a few more rounds, both grow bored because there is not much to do that provides some kind of challenge for them. (And their muscles)
Godfrey attempts to coax Morgott out from under the shade, or at least assure him that he doesn’t have to be bundled up in towels the entire time. Not one attempt is successful. But he manages to strike up a conversation with Godrick, who eagerly listens to him recount stories of his war campaigns.
Marika:
It is hot girl summer. She is doing hot girl shit. She settles down to sunbathe, wearing her black bikini with matching sunglasses and does not plan on moving for the entirety of their day. She claims she is just there to get a good tan but ends up looking no different the next day much to her frustration.
Sometimes she will sit up and check to make check that nobody has died, the beach isn’t on fire and her warrior husband is still looking super hot.
Godwyn:
He arrives on Fortissax, because of course he does and compared to the rest of his family is he very excited for this day trip. He feels good being outside in the hot sun and doing something for his body.
He is bit upset that his friend leaves pretty early, but being in the presence of the Queen who waged war against his kin and the Lord who carried out said war.
Godwyn’s attempt to flex his swimming skills and flawless demigod body in front of the Black Knife Assassins falls flat and he gets jumped by them later and almost drowns. He also ends up with a sunburn because he assumed his godly skin would be enough protection. (What a himbo)
When it is time to leave, Fortissax is there to pick him up again and they both spent a very long time playing around in the ocean, splashing water at everyone, much to the displeasure of Marika.
Morgott:
Did not want to come. Does not want to be here. He feels way too hot and, the sand is irritating his skin and sticking to the fur, the water is to wet, everything is hot, and his family is too loud. He hides away under a parasol in the shade while being wrapped in a few towels for protection.
He continues to suffer in silence until Nepheli offers him so cool watermelon, which he accepts with some reservation, but he ends up eating whole after noticing how dehydrated he is.
Morgott can’t swim and he isn’t all too fond of large bodies of water after growing up in the severs, but something inside him has been stirred at the thought of at least dipping his feet in the waves and see what it feels like. He ends up standing by the shore while everyone is packing up, but then just decides to head home because the wet sand is sticking to his fur.
Mogh:
Brings his cult (Varre) with him to the beach and attempts to make a spectacle out of his arrival, but no one besides Godwyn shares the excitement. He doesn’t bother giving Marika an ounce of attention and instead chooses to bond with his siblings. (By trying to recruit them into his cult)
Mogh needs to inquire from his loyal follower what is it you even do at a beach, besides swimming and after hearing a few suggestions he simply decides on sunbathing since it allows him to enjoy the warm climate.
He ends up in a heated discussion with Rykard about heresy and ideologies which divert from the principles of the Golden Order, and both become so absorbed in it that they become unaware of how much time has passed until it is time to pack up.
Godrick:
Probably scares children and stomps on their sandcastles or something. He also wants to go swimming for a while, not to impressed Godfrey of course, but ends up pushing himself to exhaustion by trying to manage all his limbs.
He ends up suffering from both sunburn and a heat stroke and joins Morgott under his parasol, where he looks like a miserable wet dog.
Pre grafting Godrick just sits under a parasol and complains about that the weather. There isn’t much to do for him since he doesn’t really know how to swim and can’t even gaze at the sun without his consciousness beginning to say goodbye.
Nepheli:
Is probably the most relaxed out of all of them. She goes swimming and enjoys a bit of a workout before retiring to her beach mat. She eats a bit of watermelon and ice cream and helps Rya pick out some nice seashells to take home with.
She also uses the opportunity to get to know her extended family better, but in her case, it works out because her personality makes everyone feel very comfortable around her. The day flies by way to fast for her to speak to everyone, but she is still glad to have made some more connections with her brothers and sisters.

kakigori | kazuha x reader
Tumblr media
summary. you and kazuha share your kakigori with each other.
ft. kazuha x gn!reader
cw. indirect kiss >:))
wc. 1.3k
notes. yay school is finally over for me! i’m hoping that over the summer i can have korean-style shaved ice because i’ve been craving it for so long but because of covid so many of the stores were closedjskf. anyway, i hope you enjoy this fic and eat some kakigori :D
Tumblr media
the sun was beating down on you hard. in fact, it was probably the hottest summer day that you were experiencing so far this year. even if you could feel kazuha creating a light breeze around you to get rid of the hot air, you still felt like you were going to melt under the bright sun. it was at times like this when you wished you had a cryo or hydro vision.
you were walking through inazuma city with your white-haired childhood friend, kazuha, because you created plans to have some hotpot later with thoma, ayaka, and ayato. however, you decided to come a little earlier to look around the city since you wanted to build up an appetite. you had stopped by ogura textiles and kimonos earlier and had ordered some new silks, but now you needed a quick snack. as you walked through the streets, you noticed a new stand that wasn’t there yesterday.
“kazu! look! let’s check out that stand over there.”
you grabbed his hand and dragged him over to the stand and read the sign that was at the top.
“kakigori!” you looked at kazuha excitedly.
kazuha hummed as he stood beside you. “i remember when we shared a bowl of kakigori so many years ago.”
indeed, it had been so long since you had kakigori, but you could already taste the sweet condensed milk, chewy mochi on top, and the cold ice wiping out any oncoming heat stroke.
ever since the vision hunt decree had been issued, it had been difficult to find someone who was willing to make the laborious kakigori and even more difficult to find someone who was willing to pay for it. before the decree, those with cryo visions would create new blocks of ice and shave them into flakes, but once their visions were taken away, they would have had to resort to getting real blocks of ice which could only be found in snezhnaya. once the sakoku decree was issued, all hopes of seeing the icy delicacy were gone.
however, as you watched the man create ice from thin air and start turning the crank of the machine, letting the snowy substance fall and collect in a bowl, you could feel your childhood memories of being with kazuha coming back to you.
kazuha was quick to notice the twinkle in your eyes which were glued to the machine. “a cold dessert on a day like this will leave us feeling renewed. allow me to treat you to some.”
“really?”
he nodded.
“we should go order then!”
the two of you reached the front of the line, and you ordered shirokuma while kazuha ordered ujikintoki. usually, the both of you would just order typical kakigori with sweet condensed milk and red bean, but today the both of you felt like trying something new. being a little bold never hurt anyone.
you watched, fascinated, as the man expertly used his vision to create a thick block of ice which was then put in the machine. he took the crank and started turning, and you watched the ice shavings layer on top of each other in the wooden bowl. once two bowls were filled, he started adding the toppings: the fruits and beans were already at the bottom of yours, so he only added milk and honey and more fruits on top while for kazuha he added green tea syrup, red bean paste, and sweet condensed milk.
as promised, kazuha paid for both of your orders and you thanked both the man and kazuha as you took your bowl to find somewhere to sit. you found an empty table for two with a parasol to provide shade, and you and kazuha sat across from each other.
you carefully scooped up some of the ice and the toppings and took a bite. it tasted even better than you remembered. the coolness of the ice drained the heat out of you and the fruit was sweet and refreshing.
“kazu, you should try mine,” you suggested.
you scooped up some more with his favorite fruit and held the spoon in front of his face.
kazuha hesitated for a moment. he wasn’t as ignorant as many thought he was when it came to couple things. he knew that feeding someone with their own spoon was not done between just friends. the crew on the crux would always jokingly spoon-feed each other as if they were a married couple and beidou would even chime in saying that they were sharing an indirect kiss. even when they were just joking, kazuha never partook. it was embarrassing but also, he couldn’t imagine sharing a kiss, even an indirect one, with anyone else other than the person that he had liked since he was a child.
the heat disguised his reddened face as he leaned in and ate the kakigori. it was as good as he expected, but he wasn’t sure what was sweeter. the sugary kakigori or your expression that was looking at him, a mixture of innocent expectance as you leaned against the table to be closer to him.
he cleared his throat. “it was very good.”
your eyes lit up as if yoimiya’s fireworks were exploding in your irises. “see? getting this kakigori was such a good idea.”
he nodded. anything more he said would probably come out in a high-pitched voice out of slight nerves.
“but kazu,” you started as you put down your spoon, “can i try some of yours?”
the heat that was being eliminated by his kakigori was starting to rise up again. he knew that he wouldn’t be able to use your spoon because it could be awkward. he wasn’t even against the idea of you using his spoon either. so why was he so hesitant? kazuha always dropped everything he was doing in order to help you.
so he carefully scooped up the green ice and red beans. it was a pretty generous scoop that he held out to you. kazuha wasn’t sure how to describe your expression. although it looked like any expression of anticipation, kazuha, who had known you for so long, could tell that there was a hidden expression of excitement and something more that he couldn’t describe.
you ate the kakigori and your expression looked very satisfied.
“it’s sweet, but it’s a bit more subdued in a mature way. it reminds me of you, kazu,” you laughed.
sweet but mature. of course it wasn’t the first time someone had called him those words, but it felt much different when it was from you.
the two of you shared stories as you were eating, but noticed that it was probably soon time to go take a walk again before meeting at komore teahouse. after you put away the empty bowls and were about to leave, you noticed a couple feeding each other their kakigori.
“look kazu! that couple is sharing an indirect kiss, how cute!”
kazuha nearly choked. so you were completely aware the whole time?
“we should come by this stand again, the kakigori was so good and it gives me so much nostalgia.”
kazuha nodded, but he wasn’t even sure what he was nodding to. his mind was much too occupied with what you just said beforehand. so you knew that sharing the spoons were indirect kisses and you also knew that it was a thing with couples. but you had also shared it with him, a friend.
you could see the gears turning in kazuha’s head as he tried understand your words. you knew he was a bit dense at times, but you hoped that this was enough of a hint as to how you felt about him.
kazuha turned to you. he was quite terrible at hiding it when he was extremely happy since his eyes couldn’t lie. “let’s have kakigori again tomorrow and try something new.”

“Dude, is this really necessary?”
Stacie hums. “It’s French fashion.”
Beca rolls her eyes. “I feel like if that were true, we would have seen some people wearing it by now. This just screams ‘I’m an American tourist’ to me.”
Stacie ignores her, adjusting the beret over her head as she stands in front of the mirror. “I think I look sexy with this. Very… chic.”
“Great. If you decide to walk around with that and a baguette under your arm I’m going solo on our tour.”
Stacie plucks another beret from the shelf and screws it over Beca’s head. “Aw, you look like Gavroche.”
“Fuck you, dude,” Beca mutters, taking it off and flattening her hair with her palm as she places the hat back in its initial spot. “I’m hungry.”
“You’re always hungry,” Stacie points out, and Beca can’t really contradict her.
Once Stacie has finally picked one of those ridiculous hats, they head up the cobblestone street and find themselves a brasserie (one of those restaurants where you can get just a drink or have a full meal) for lunch. It’s pretty hot (a bit too hot for Beca’s taste, but she’s hopefully applied enough sunscreen not to resemble a lobster by the end of the day) in Paris that day, but they find shelter under one of those huge parasols, a gentle breeze sweeping in ever so often as they gaze at the food options.
Melodic giggles draw Beca’s focus away from the badly translated menu and towards two tables over to her left. They belong to a redhead, who just happens to be as radiant as her laughter, and Beca finds herself staring a beat too long, catching Stacie’s attention.
“She’s cute.”
Beca’s cheeks heat up as soon as she realizes she’s been caught, and she looks back at her menu so quickly something in her neck twitches. She clears her throat. “What are you talking about?”
“Aww, you adorable baby bisexual. You should go talk to her. Or buy her a drink.”
“Dude, no,” Beca hisses.
Stacie is silent for a few beats, clearly listening in. “She’s American.”
Beca makes a noncommittal sound. “And?”
Stacie leans over, a smirk curving her lips. “Imagine how romantic it would be, you two meeting in Paris and finding each other again in the States. That’s Nicholas Sparks shit right here.”
Beca finds Stacie’s eyes over the menu. “You seem to have forgotten a slight detail: I don’t know how to talk to women.”
Stacie’s eyes roll skyward. “Maybe you should try.”
The waiter thankfully puts a temporary end to the conversation, and once he’s gone with their orders, Beca sees that so is the redhead and her friend.
“Well, there goes your Parisian romance,” Stacie says, sighing softly.
Beca doesn’t really think about the stranger again, not until the end of the day. Stacie insists on heading to the Eiffel Tower to catch the sunset (and probably take a bunch of pictures for her influencer Instagram account), and Beca ignores her aching feet, feeling like she’s already been complaining a lot today.
“Hi there.”
Beca twists her head to the left to find the stranger from the cafe. Her blue eyes nearly make her stumble. “Um, hi?”
“So this might sound really weird, but I’ve always wanted a romantic picture in front of the Eiffel Tower and my boyfriend just dumped me before this trip and well, I was wondering if you’d pose with me?”
That’s a lot of information in five seconds, and Beca blinks twice in slow succession. “Pose, as in…?”
“As in, kiss me?”
She hears Stacie gasp beside her and doesn’t even want to spare her a glance. Her ears feel like they just caught on fire and her voice is nowhere to be found.
It’s only when Stacie jabs her elbow into her ribs that Beca says something. “I, uh, I-- what?”
Well, close to saying something.
The other woman giggles. “You’re really cute. And I asked if you’d like to take a photo with me.”
“Kissing,” Beca echoes, just to make sure.
The redhead grimaces. “Sorry, you’re totes creeped out. I’ll find someone else.”
“She’ll do it,” Stacie announces before Beca can say anything else.
“What, dude,” Beca interjects.
“If you don’t I will,” Stacie mutters, and that shoves Beca into motion.
“Um yeah, sure,” she tells the stranger. A shaky nod. “I’ll do it.”
“Awes!” She hands Stacie her phone. “My friend Aubrey can take the pic.”
Beca notices the blonde standing off to the side and waves awkwardly before her friend slides her hand into hers and tugs her forward. Beca’s heart starts to race a little as they come to a stop at the top of the stairs splaying out over the Trocadero gardens.
“Wait, what’s your name?” The stranger asks, seemingly as an afterthought.
“Um, Beca,” Beca says.
“Nice to meet you, Beca. I’m Chloe.”
Beca nods, tongue poking out to wet her lips. “Cool. Cool, cool, cool. So um,” she wipes her hands over her jeans. “How should we…”
“I’ll just kiss you now,” Chloe says, amusement clear in her tone.
Beca wants to dig herself a hole. But that thought vanishes as soon as Chloe starts leaning in, and her eyes slam shut the moment those soft, full lips brush against hers in a gentle kiss. She hears herself humming as her head tilts forward to chase the remaining distance between them, pushing a firmer kiss against Chloe’s mouth. It’s Chloe’s turn to make a sound this time, and Beca nearly forgets her own name.
She instantly forgets about the photo, and the fact that Chloe is a stranger, too caught up in how good this feels to really care. She does, however, come to her senses when she starts to lack oxygen and pulls away with a sheepish smile, her cheeks flaming.
“Damn…” Chloe murmurs, eyes alight. “I picked well.”
Beca clears her throat and tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, avoiding her eyes. “Glad I could be of service,” she mumbles with an awkward salute.
(yes, yes, a goddamn salute because she’s a fucking dork.)
Chloe giggles and Beca suddenly feels high on the sound. “Too bad my friend and I have to leave tonight. I could have definitely gone for an encore performance.”
Beca isn’t sure how redder her face can get before it matches the shade of her plaid shirt. “That’s uh, too bad.”
“Well thanks for doing it for me,” Chloe says with a wink, then kisses her cheek. “Bye, Beca.”
“Bye,” Beca murmurs, somewhat still in a kiss-induced daze as she watches her go.
“Holy crap, dude,” Stacie says when she catches up with her. “You totally made out with her.”
Beca chuckles, rubbing the back of her neck. “We um, got carried away?”
Stacie punches her arm. “Tell me you got her number.”
Beca shakes her head. “She probably lives like, in LA or something.”
“Oh my god, you’re such an idiot.”
Beca has to agree; she’s the biggest idiot in the world.
The rest of their trip goes smoothly. Beca only has to listen to Stacie having sex once, which is a wonder, considering it’s Stacie, and the two fly back to New York at the end of the week, heads filled with good memories of their trip abroad.
“I still can’t believe you didn’t ask for her number,” Stacie says as they walk out of the arrival gate at JFK.
“Oh my god, would you let it go?” Beca groans, tilting her head back.
“She was so hot.”
“I know,” Beca whines. “But I won’t find her again so let’s just not talk about it anymore.”
“Fine.”
It’s a few days later, as she’s aimlessly scrolling through TikTok as she does every night before bed, that Beca sees it. She almost scrolls past it because ugh, couples, but the yellow summer dress and red hair catch her attention and have her sitting up with a jolt. Her breathes hitches in her throat as she reads the caption:
I hope this cute girl I met in Paris and asked for a pic of us kissing so I could pretend I had a romantic time in France sees this so I can take her out on a date
The video blew up, counting over a million likes and fifteen thousand comments. Her trembling thumb presses on the comment section.
Okay, TikTok, do your thing, we need to find this girl!!
Omg they’re so cute
Imagine they find each other!!
Beca swallows, licking her suddenly dry lips. “Imagine…” she breathes out as she presses on Chloe’s profile picture, hits follow, and then taps Message.
Hey, so… it’s Beca. The girl from Paris?
She locks her phone right after hitting send and buries her face in her palms, emitting a low groan. Her phone pinging less than a minute later makes her heart pound against her ribs. She reaches for it and peeks at the screen with one eye.
omg, hi!! it’s really you?
She figures maybe a few people have sent Chloe a message because hello, who wouldn’t, pretending it was her. So Beca thinks proving it is really her could be a good thing.
If by me you mean the dork who freaking saluted you after our kiss, yep that’s me.
Beca bites down on her bottom lip as she watches the three dots pop up on the screen.
I can’t believe it worked! I’ve been thinking about you a lot since that day.
Butterflies go off in her belly, and before Beca can ponder on how cheesy this is, she’s typing something back.
Me too. That was um, a really good kiss. And you’re pretty.
Oh god, I’m facepalming so hard right now. Sorry I… don’t really know how to talk to girls.
To her surprise, Chloe doesn’t seem put off by it.
You’re very cute. May I ask where you live?
Beca doesn’t want to get her hopes up, because the States are fucking huge, and she doesn’t see herself jumping into a long-distance whatever.
NYC. You?
I go to vet school in Ithaca.
Ithaca. Beca knows it’s in the state, but she googles how close just to make sure. Another message from Chloe comes through.
I’m usually in the city once a month since my best friend lives there. Would you… like to go out on a date when I’m around?
“Dude, chill out,” she mutters to herself when she feels a wave of warmth encompass her entire being.
Sure, yeah. I’d like that.
They exchange numbers and end up texting for most of the evening until Chloe announces she has to head to bed because she has an early lecture the following morning.
Beca is about to turn off the lights too, that idiotic smile still stuck to her lips, when her phone buzzes with a text message from Stacie.
DUDE!!! Watch this NOW
A TikTok link follows, and Beca knows what it is before she even opens it.
Wow. This really blew up, huh.
Stacie’s reply comes through less than five seconds later. That’s all you have to say?! Tell me you’re going to message her. I got dibs on Maid of Honor at your wedding, btw.
Beca rolls her eyes. She ponders telling Stacie but decides to keep Chloe to herself for a while. I’ll think about it.
She’s a fidgeting mess the morning leading up to their date. Chloe told her to meet her by the River Cafe in Dumbo, and Beca has spent entirely too much time deciding on what to wear, which really never happens.
Chloe is already there when she makes it to the park, and Beca buries her hands into her jacket pockets to keep them from wringing together. Chloe doesn’t see her right away, gazing up at the Brooklyn Bridge instead.
“Do you have a thing for iconic iron monuments?” She teases as she approaches, catching Chloe’s attention. She narrows her eyes playfully. “Are you gonna try and kiss me again?” A gasp flies past her lips as she exaggeratedly lies a hand over her chest. “Are you just using me to go viral on TikTok?”
Chloe giggles. “You’re a dork,” she says, grinning. “Hi.”
“Hey,” Beca breathes out, relaxing her shoulders as she smiles back.
“You like ice cream?” Chloe asks, nodding towards the vendor across the grassy area.
“Sure,” Beca says, and they fall into a step towards it. She takes her brain for something to say before things get awkward, but Chloe beats her to it.
“So what’s it like being a TikTok sensation?”
Beca barks out a laugh. “Amazing. One of my life goals for sure,” she jokes, cutting Chloe an amused glance.
Chloe giggles. “I honestly didn’t think it would blow up. But I’m glad it did ‘cause not finding you would have sucked.”
Beca clears her throat, looking down for a second. “Me too. I was really beating myself up for not asking for your number back in Paris.”
Chloe’s lips curve in a small smile, and she looks like she’s about to say something, but it’s their turn to order.
Ice creams in hand, they settle down on the grass to enjoy them. The weather is nice, not too hot with a gentle breeze rolling by once in a while.
“So what are some of your life goals, then?” Chloe asks once they’ve sat down.
“Making a living out of music is the main one,” she says. “I work as assistant producer right now, but the job is pretty crappy.”
“I may or may not have stalked your Instagram,” Chloe admits next. “You have an amazing voice.”
“Oh,” Beca lets out, feeling her cheeks heat up. “Thanks.” She clears her throat. “You’re into music?” Strangely something that hadn’t come up during their texting.
Chloe nods, smiling. “I was in an acapella group in college.”
Beca’s eyebrows shoot up, and she laughs before she can help herself. “Wait, seriously? You’re an acapella nerd?”
Chloe shoves her shoulder, laughing as well. “Shut up.”
“I guess we all make questionable choices in college, huh?”
Chloe huffs, throwing Beca a glare. Beca spots a sprinkle of amusement in her eyes, so she doesn’t think Chloe is truly mad.
“I’m just messing with you,” she says, softening. “I think any kind of music is neat. And singing without instruments is actually pretty impressive.”
“Thanks,” Chloe says lightly. “There’s just… something about music, you know. It soothes the soul and makes you escape the real world for a few minutes.”
A genuine smile curves Beca’s lips. It’s exactly how she would describe what music does to her. “Yeah.”
She eyes Chloe’s profile, still a little bit struck over the fact that this gorgeous girl is on a date with her.
“What?” Chloe asks with curiosity swirling in her eyes when she catches Beca staring.
Beca blinks. “Nothing. I…” she clears her throat. “You’re just really pretty.” She scrunches up her nose. “See? I’m awkward as fuck.”
Chloe chuckles and slides her hand into Beca’s free one. “I think it’s cute.”
Beca grumbles. “I’m not cute, I’m badass.”
Their time together flies by as they learn more about one another, Beca even managing to convince Chloe to show her some acapella videos. The sun sets without either realizing and the park is near empty, save for a couple strolling by in the distance.
“I should head back to Aubrey’s,” Chloe says when it gets a bit chillier. “I said I’d be home for dinner.”
Beca is a bit disappointed, but she nods, smiling. “Okay.”
She pushes to her feet and helps Chloe to hers, her eyes dropping to Chloe’s lips once they’re both standing.
“You know… I didn’t really care about the video,” Chloe murmurs, stepping closer. “I saw you at the restaurant and thought you were really cute. When I spotted you again later, I had to think of something.”
Beca raises an eyebrow. “I noticed you at the restaurant, too.”
“I know. You weren’t being very subtle.”
Beca huffs. “Shut up.”
Chloe simply laughs, her eyes sweeping down to Beca’s lips before she leans in. Beca is a lot less nervous this time around, and she hums as those familiar lips glide over hers flawlessly, her hands bunching up in Chloe’s top as she holds her waist. It’s over way too soon for her liking, but she has to remind herself they’re in public, and how she’ll probably get to do that again very soon.
“See you soon?” Chloe murmurs when they part, brushing her nose against Beca’s.
Beca nods and squeezes her waist. “Yeah.”
With one last kiss, she watches Chloe go in a similar state of a daze as in Paris.
Something tells her this is the start of something amazing.

You haven’t been to the beach in months. So a car trip for hours, where you can blank out and peer out of the window to enjoy the wonderful and ever-changing scenery is amazing. Dipping your feet in the water or eating from food vendors or enjoying the warm summer sun on your skin. Perhaps getting a tan if the weather is perfect. This would all be perfectly enjoyable and possible.
If it wasn’t for work.
“[Surname]-san, why are you coming with us? You said you can’t fight.” Itadori calls from the backseat, nestled not-so-comfortably between Fushiguro and Kugisaki.
Wouldn’t it be better if Kugisaki is in the middle since she’s the smallest and the skinniest? The thought drifts into your head but you soon understand why. As soon as the words leave his mouth it’s met with a firm and resounding slap on the arm. Itadori’s yelp of pain is silenced under her hiss of “God, you’re so tactless! Now move over, it’s getting cramped with all of the bags.” Ah, she didn’t want to sit in the middle. And what bags? I didn’t bring any.
They keep their banter up and a quick glance to both Gojou and Fushiguro indicates that they have no intention of stopping it. Gojou is actually humming through the bickering. Why do I have to be the adult? He’s like, 5 years older than me. That’s literally what he said as the reason to drive instead of you.
“It’s fine, Kugisaki-san. I’m coming along because there’s been a lot of cursed spirit activity around here and I need to see if something abnormal is happening. I’m not going to get in the way of the fight so you don’t need to worry.” You send Itadori a smile through the back mirror which he responds with a quick nod, then a confused look.
“Isn’t that Gojou-sensei’s responsibilities?” The mentioned adult laughs and smoothly makes a right turn. You want to slap him.
“Normally, yes, but he insists on being insufferable.” You turn to face them, leaning onto the seat with a scowl. “The report he made was nearly illegible and last time something like this happened, and I had to sit down with him for 3 hours to complete it. Even then, he was going off topic half the time and trying to distract me. Itadori-kun, Kugisaki-san, listen to me. If he doesn’t do his work, you have to practically force him.”
“Doesn’t work.” Fushiguro comments while looking out the window. Gojou has the audacity to laugh again.
“We had a great time! You were laughing your head off by the time we were done.” A light tug on your shirt makes you sit back properly. The scowl stays in place.
“I missed dinner! And I missed the last episode of Haikyuu thanks to that!”
“Fine, fine. I’ll take it up by buying you dinner, okay?” He must be kidding if that makes up for missing your favourite anime. Kuroo came and went thanks to him. The car comes to an abrupt stop just as you’re about to complain again. “We have arrived!”
Salt wafts in the air as the sea twinkles underneath the afternoon sun. It’s hot today, and humid enough to make your clothes stick to your skin, which is gross. Sunny and warm means a swim will be ideal, but you have to take care of the whole recurring curses thing first. Previous reports have said that they were all mid-level, so hopefully Gojou’s students won’t have that much of a problem taking care of them. That also means they, including you as well, might have the opportunity to relax for the rest of the day.
The actual spot is somewhere in the nearby forest, filled thick with trees and so large that even if someone went missing it would take ages to search. An ideal hunting place since a lot of people visit there. Numbers dropped quite a bit after the fifth person “went missing”.
The first task is to cover the place with a curtain. Since the place is so large and not encompassing the entire place was deemed too risky, large amounts of cursed energy is required. Hence Gojou’s efforts right now.
“[Name]-san.” Kugisaki calls you. “Are you coming in with us?” Her voice is tentative, like she doesn’t want to offend you. It’s kind of funny because she shows more respect for you than her actual teacher for some reason. Gojou complained about it before. She doesn’t know the extent, or more accurately the lack of, your powers and has a right to be worried. All she knows is that you can’t fight.
“Ah, I am coming in, but I’ll stay far away from the fight. You don’t need to worry about me.”
“And I’ll be right by her side!” Gojou snaps into thin air, linking his arm with yours.  “Your personal bodyguard! But I’m sure you guys can handle this one.” Still humming a tune, he sends them along their way with a reassuring smile. You smile at Kugisaki and wish her good luck. Shooting Gojou a suspicious glare, she runs ahead to the two boys and starts whispering. They look back at the two of you and get into what seems to be an argument. A bad thing to do right before a possibly life-threatening mission.
You watch the group disappear deeper into the woods, fear gripping at your heart. This is actually the first time in the field after years of being tucked away in an office. Ken-chan specifically requested it due to your unique cursed energy situation. Apparently that was the first time he asked for a favour to the principle and he never asked for anything again. They can handle themselves, you’re sure, but Itadori already had a close call.
“Worried?” Gojou, on the other hand, sounds like he has no concerns in the world. Maybe that’s a testament to how much he trusts his students. It doesn’t alleviate your agitation. “It’s fine, we can just take a break here and if trouble comes, they can take care of it themselves.” You stare at him incredulously. “I’m kidding, I’m kidding! I’ll step in if something goes wrong. You’re all in safe hands.”
There is no one better than him in terms of fighting with cursed energy. How on earth someone like this gets imbued with endless power, you’ll never know. Sighing, you take a seat on a fallen log. The moss on them tickles your fingers. It feels nice, something to distract you from your brain being its usual bastard and thinking the worst case scenario. Gojou plops himself down right next to you.
“We can go see them if you’re that worried, mother hen.” Nudging his leg shuts him up. Closing your eyes, you concentrate on reaching out for their cursed energy. Eight signals flicker from where they went, three blazing stronger than the others. One of them is nearly blinding. Sukuna is on a completely different level. If there’s that much of a difference in energy, they’ll finish soon and come back to have fun for the rest of the day. God knows they need it.
Your eyes flit open and come face to face with Gojou’s blindfold. It causes you to fall backwards and you brace for impact with a little yelp. But Gojou’s arm surrounds your abdomen, lifting you into the air and onto your feet. Heartbeats thud in your ears thanks to the sudden adrenaline boost.
“Did I scare you?” His laugh is cheeky. “I’m bored… Wanna play 20 questions?” As usual, his train of thought is impossible to even attempt to follow. A window of hundreds of tabs wrestling to be the first all the time is probably what the inside of his mind looks like.
“Sure, why not.”
Tumblr media
Fushiguro, Itadori and Kugisaki all perk up when they receive the news of a day off to enjoy the beach. Since it’s closed off to the civilians, it’ll be like a private party. Something to keep their mind off of another mission that’s bound to come soon.
While they run off to the beach, you go to talk to the park rangers for the paperwork. Gojou asks if you want company but someone needs to supervise the children. The process takes barely 10 minutes anyway.
When you come back to the beach, the trio is screaming in the sea while trying to fight each other. Even Fushiguro is laughing. Childlike innocence is beautiful and long overdue. Two huge parasols and towels are laid out nearby where they’re playing. Gojou is out of his usual attire and in a swimming trunk. His blindfold is still on. Is this what was in the bags?
Now that you look more closely at the students, they’re all in swimwear as well. Looks like you’re the only one that didn’t get a memo.
“Heya! Done?”
“No thanks to you, Mr The-Whole-Reason-I’m-Here-In-The-First-Place.” He laughs at the nickname.
“You should change.”
“I didn’t bring a swimsuit. Nobody told me and I was just thinking of dipping my feet.”
“Nobara brought you one. It’s in the bag labelled ‘If you look inside I’m going to kill you.’” Laughter comes out at the absurdity.
“Why did Kugisaki—”
“Because she wants you to relax. Now come on! Let’s have fun!” he pushes you excitedly towards the car. It’s really weird how someone your senior has more energy than you and his three students combined. Sighing, you trek back and find the bag. It really is labelled that, in caps. Kugisaki is a good kid.
There’s a bathroom nearby for you to change in. The wind is still pretty strong when you walk out but you’re saved thanks to the school jacket. There’s also a pair of flip-flops. Ken-chan must have helped since they all fit perfectly.
Itadori is being half-drowned when you come back. Fushiguro and Kugisaki are merciless when it comes to fighting. Gojou smiles as you walk into his line of sight. Scooting over to let you into the shade, he lies back onto the towel and stretches his legs out into the sun with a slight groan. You stay sitting up, watching the three children absentmindedly.
Sunlight tickles your feet. The sea breeze stops it from being too hot but it’s slowly getting stuffier under the jacket. Quickly discarding it, Gojou catches your eyes while you fold it up.
It’s impossible to tell if he’s awake or sleeping thanks to his signature blindfold, but this is the most relaxed you’ve seen him in years; hands folded behind his head and muscles completely loose. Small scars dot his body, probably gained from fights which he deemed insignificant enough to bother Shouko with or heal himself. In a way, it’s a reminder for all the battles he’s survived. Pretty easily too, you’re guessing. There’s a deep one on his stomach and your hand moves towards it for some reason.
Long fingers intercept your hand just before it touches the scratched skin, entwining themselves to you. One end of Gojou’s lips quirks up.
“I’m going to be embarrassed if you keep looking at my body, you know.” You immediately attempt to rip your hand back but he’s got you locked tight. He’s not even using Infinity. Heat threatens to explode your face because he’s been awake all this time and you’re going to die from shame. “If you wanted to touch me then you could have just asked.” Your fingers graze against the skin on his stomach for a split second but he loosens his grip and you will be damned if you don’t take that chance.
Gojou cackles, enjoying your flustered state, and he’s halfway to suffocation because he’s laughing too much. His instincts still allow him to move out of the way for your punch. Doesn’t stop him from laughing though. Even his students, who were screaming and playing like they didn’t have a care in the world, are looking at the two of you. God, where’s a hole for me to die in right now?
Eventually, his laughter dies off. He’s still chuckling though. His teeth glint in the light as he gives you a wide smile. A sense of foreboding washes over you.
“Up we go!”
“What?” Two arms hook under your knees and back, lifting you effortlessly into the air. Your body bounces in his arms every time he takes a step closer to the sea.
“Wait Gojou, wait wait wait wait!”
“Gojou-sensei wai—”
The water is freezing.
“Gojou Satoru, I’m going to kill you!”
“That’s admirable! I’m sure you can do it!” Fushiguro snickers as you swipe an arm at Gojou, who moves away effortlessly again. Hair is plastered to your face and this rage is not going to subside unless you rip the blindfold off his smirking face and dunk his head into the water. But he keeps dodging you, just barely, as if to taunt you further.
Exhaustion sets in quickly since moving around in water is a lot harder and anger eats away at your stamina. Just as you’re about to give up, Gojou’s face is slapped with a wave of water. Everyone looks to Kugisaki. She has the biggest smile you’ve ever seen.
“Pfft.” Fushiguro’s laughter breaks the silence. Itadori snickers at Gojou’s drooping hair. Soon everyone’s laughing. Then Gojou whips water that hits all three of them straight in the chest with a resounding smack. They immediately retaliate with a wave that you get caught up in.
It somehow turns into a students vs adults fight. Delighted laughter echoes in the air as everyone yells and shrieks when assaulted with icy water. There’s an unspoken rule to not use cursed energy, which is why your side is being pushed back. There’s no beating three excited kids when they’re on a holiday high.
Backtracking a bit to get away from the constant surges of water, you don’t realise you’re going deeper and deeper into the sea. A rock shifts underneath your feet and you’re plunged into the cold grips of the sea, not even given enough time to call for help. Panic overtakes your senses as you squeeze your eyes shut, hands scrambling for something to hold onto.
“[Name]!” Warmth engulfs you as Gojou lifts you out of the murky depth, worry and dread weaved into his voice. You blink rapidly as he gently brushes the hair off your face, and you see his eyes without the blindfolds for the first time. “Look at me, are you alright?”
They’re… indescribably beautiful. It’s the purest and translucent blue you’ve seen in your life, able to beat the colour of the ocean or the sky on its clearest days. It could compete with even the most exquisite sapphire locked up in a vault underground. And they’re clouded with concern and fear because of you.
“[Surname]-san!” Bringing yourself up by hugging Gojou’s neck, you see the trio wading through the water to you, dread clear on their faces. Itadori reaches you and rapidly asks if you’re fine and that he can’t possibly describe how sorry he is. It looks like he’ll dig his head into the ocean floor if you ask him to do it. Like he’s waiting for you to reprimand him.
But all that comes out is laughter, bright and childlike. They all look at you like you’re crazy. You have no idea why you’re laughing either. Maybe you’ve finally gone insane.
But being in Gojou’s arms, seeing his and Itadori’s face relax, brings you so much happiness. Tightening your arms around Gojou’s neck, you rest your head on top of his as he calms them down.
Maybe it’s the adrenaline from nearly drowning, maybe it’s something else, but your heart thumps rapidly into your ribcage, probably loud enough for him to feel.

What it’s like to be loved by them
Ah yes I am throwing out some scraps of content because I finally was able to free up some time to write! And then had no ideas! So we’re doing something cliché lol - Also I used a random character wheel to pick who to write for- (I CAN’T SPELL HINATA’S FIRST NAME IT ALL LOOKS WRONG)
Includes: Miya Osamu, Ushijima Wakatoshi, Hinata Shoyou, Yaku Morisuke, Akaashi Keiji, Oikawa Tooru and Shouhei Fukunaga
Miya Osamu:
Osamu is silver-blue piano and soft chords, the sunlight that slips so softly through the slats on blinds that are slightly broken, the slightly sticky feeling of wet rice in your hands as it fits into the lines that weave across your palms. He is white, cotton blankets and fluffed pillows, cloudy lemonade and losing sight of your toes in a thick carpet. He’s the feeling of calloused fingers on yours, fluffy socks and the taste of warm soups in winter as it breathes its hot steam down your throat and heats your stomach. He is cold cheeks and noses, tea-stained pages and the golden scent of fresh bread that signifies the best feelings of life. Osamu is hand-knitted tea cosies and watercolour paintings blu-tacked to the wall, warm, buttered popcorn and the feeling of the highstreet at night. He is the lights that glimmer on the midnight motorway and moon when it's risen in a blue afternoon sky. Being loved by Osamu is to bob on the ocean, the sun at your back and baking your legs, with salt crusting your skin and the taste of the sea on your lips while his fingers lock with yours, the perfect puzzle pieces to finish you both as the crowing laughs of seagulls echo above you.
Ushijima Wakatoshi:
Ushijima is solid wood and tall forests, the green sound of a breeze ruffling grass like a father’s hand on the head of his child. He is apples and ice cubes and soft, plaid blankets laid on the dirt. He is the sight of a small ladybird, crouched on the tip of a finger, wings spread to fly into the great expanse of sky that stretches before it. He is red sunrises and purple evenings, the hazy, grey brightness that slows the day, the syrupy sluggish afternoons of drizzled rain and icing on lemon cakes, eaten with hot tea in a library. He is muffled laughter in the corridors and coats and hands that swamp and cover and protect, and the feeling of always looking up, up, up. He is the dusty, old clock you found in the attic and the wooden slats of old houses, he is peeling plaster and new paint, and the squeak and shine of polished floors. He is secret passages through the walls and flights of stairs that extend to infinity, and the deep, throbbing, beetroot purple of the tightest hugs that root themselves down into your chest. Being loved by Ushijima is being loved by the bass line of life, it’s his hand on your head and the other hovering at your waist, slow dancing to songs that weren’t meant for such smooth delight, him spinning you out as the air sparkles and being close to the beat of his heart and mind as you glide and dip and swerve to the thrum of his voice.
Hinata Shoyou:
Hinata is the tightness in your thighs they day after exercise and the sweet tang of mangoes in summer. He's August days when the ground wavers and the grass becomes caramel. He is hot red bricks under bare feet and the dizzying height of the walls of your garden. He is water fights and sprinklers in the baking sun, the squinting eyes and glaring lights, the shortest shorts you own. He is the smokey scent of sausage that stings and waters your tongue, the barbequed weekends and idle chatter of friends and the chink of ice that melts too quickly in glasses of juice that have been kept in the fridge. He's the soft comfort of pyjamas and burning hot skin on a cold day, marshmallows and fire and smouldering logs. He is the dance of heated air and the warmth that fogs the bathroom mirror. He is sand in your toes at one moment and the top of a cliff the next. Being loved by Hinata is the kites that float over the hilltops and the whipped foam of waves and the splattered paint of blankets, the mismatch of deckchairs and parasols at the beach, a sandcastle and the flagpole on top, and the horizon that stretches so far into the distance.
Yaku Morisuke:
Yaku is beaming, sunshine laughter and the ruffled hair of little kids. He is the background chatter in a café and the music playing in your favourite shops, the rushing of places and people as you're dragged down the street on your way to somewhere special. He's the thud, thud, thud of sprinting down a massive hill as the air is ripped from your lungs and your joyful screams are lost to the spiraling sky. He's the blur of green and blue and the smell of grass as you roll half of the way. He is the juice of melting ice lollies and the teasing winks of wind chimes by the sea, he's the sticky residue of broken stems that leaves itself on your fingers after the construction of a daisy chain. He's the light of a phone screen in the dark and the print of an old book where the s and f look irritatingly similar. He is the warmth of your own bed and the scent of your own home, the feeling of old clothes and attachment. Being loved by Yaku is to call to the birds that circle overhead and to feed fresh strawberries to one another, to play fight with sticks and paint your legs with grass stains and to trundle home with the exhaustion that comes from euphoria, sharing a hand, high on life.
Akaashi Keiji:
Akaashi is a lake, clear as glass and just as cold, although not the biting cold, but the cold that invites hot chocolate and a log fire. He is the lakes that teem with fish that nudge your numbing fingers and make you wonder at the world, he is the sunlight that glints off of slick rocks and your glimmering skin. He's the royal blue of day and the navy of night, the colour of the ocean, and of flowers, and of the quiet hum of a cello played delicately. He is the fingers of trees that reach to the sun, and the crunching silence of wet autumn leaves, the scent of old books and ink and the eternal echo of time in a museum. He is the sculpted face of statue and the warmth of a flushed face, the fragility of butterfly wings and flower petals and the strength of the trunk of an oak. He is hummingbirds and kingfishers and the simmering yellow of a springtime kiss. He is the sun at your neck and the shade of a tree above you, the splash of a diving duck and the tickle of grass on your bare feet. Being loved by Akaashi is staring up at him from where you sit, serene tranquility, the faint thrum of a river beneath you as your hand disturbs it, the creak of an aging wooden boat and the dappled sunlight that streams through the trees as he rows you to love.
Oikawa Tooru:
Oikawa is the tinkling of bells and the birdsong that flies in the early morning. He is the banded sunrise and all of its colours, the yellow songs on the radio that you sing along to, the orange-gold warmth of early evening, the pink of a blush on his cheeks, the purple light of the night that casts his face into shadow and the navy blue of his wallpaper. He is doodles on desks and using highlighter ink for nail varnish, he is cute stationery and over-curled handwriting and the giggles that come from sharing a secret. He is the creak of benches that have been sat on too many times and the blinding colours of tropical fish in an aquarium. He’s the blasting sound of loud radio, the rush of windows wide open at seventy miles an hour, the pressure against an arm thrown out of the window and the crescendo of voices singing at the top of their lungs until your voices crack and your throats are deserts. Being loved by Oikawa is whipped cream on your nose and joyful laughter, pancakes on the ceiling and sprinkles scattered over the floor, it’s playing children’s games while waiting for a cake to cook, and snuggling up with popcorn in a fairy-light bedecked fort, with foundations of cotton and walls of blankets as the white glare of television shines in your eyes.
Shouhei Fukunaga:
Fukunaga is uncontrollable giggling and whispered jokes, he is the fire-engine red of plastic buckets and spades, the sweetness of sugary treats and the fizz of sherbert on your tongue. He is brightly coloured doors and hanging baskets of flowers, the unevenness of cobbled streets and pastel houses. He’s the soft song of a springtime breeze when it brushes your cheek with a tender hand and blows your eyes open, dusting your face and head, the exhilarating rush of staring into the wind, the drop in your stomach as you lean backwards into its support. He is the chime of a shop door and the crinkle of packets that have been piled into your arms, the warmth of a kitchen and the taste of joy. He’s puns and playful nudges and blinding grins, crinkling eyes and soft cheeks stretched wide, he’s homemade food and the sparkling expression of the one who made it, he’s the warmth of a borrowed jumper, the mould of a side that you fit to so easily, the clicking of a keyboard when online games are played together. He is the snacks that have melted slightly in his bag, odd socks with garish patterns, googly eyes stuck all over his books, doodles in the margins and fluffy pencil toppers, dancing with no rhythm to old songs in the kitchen and letting yourselves go wild. Being loved by Fukunaga is to lie under the coffee table, your eyes falling into his as he stares you down, deft fingers nimbly shuffling cards, it’s to laugh in disbelief as he pulls your card from the deck, eyebrows wiggling their way off of his face, a playful beam poking through his lips, your legs are tangled together and one of your arms is going numb but it doesn’t matter, you are his and he is yours.

Golden Hour
Here is my piece for the @noragamibigbang! My artist partner @shinkimiope had such a lovely idea and art to match, so naturally I had to get all sentimental on it. I hope you enjoy!
A midi alarm rang out from a phone on the coffee table. It was perched so delicately on the corner, crowded out as it was by large textbooks and notebook viscera, that it was just a few rings from falling off the table altogether.
Hiyori burst from the bathroom with a toothbrush in one hand and her falling towel in the other. Flecks of toothpaste dotted her lips and her hair was only partly brushed, the half that wasn’t dripping water onto her living room floor. She stuck the toothbrush in her mouth to use that hand to catch her phone as it wobbled off the coffee table.
How is it three already? She turned a frantic eye to the microwave clock as if hoping it would give her a better time, but unfortunately, she was still going to be late.
Helping that study group last night was a bad idea.
Groaning, she hurried to a cabinet placed against the wall in her living room. It was more of a covered shelf, really, made of mismatched driftwood that's been carefully sanded and polished with something that made it glimmer like sunlight on the sea. On the sole high shelf was a shrine, just as carefully made, just as lovingly looked after. Not a speck of dust touched any part of it.
[Read the rest on AO3 or below the cut]
Hiyori clapped her hands together and focused on the shrine's god. Yato, I'm going to be late. Feel free to start setting up without me!
A faint breeze stirred her towel, as if a door had been left open and a summer wind had blown in.
I hear you loud and clear, Yato's voice answered distantly. His scent washed over her, wild and ancient and warm, and she could sense he was smiling through their temporary connection. I can carry things if you've brought too much.
Hiyori exhales around her toothbrush. That’s okay, I’ll be fine. I just lost track of time.
You don’t need to get dressed up on my account.
Yato’s mental voice was teasing, gentle, but it still raised a blush to her face that made her glad he wasn’t there in person. It’s nothing like that, school work just kept me up. See you in twenty?
The wind brushed the back of her neck. See you then.
His presence faded away and so did the breeze. The air around the shrine seemed charged and clean, the space sanctified in the short time of their conversation. It was a testament to how much Yato's power as a god of fortune had grown and how many more people believed in him. She ran her finger over the familiar corner of the shrine one more time before stepping away to finish getting dressed.
She put her hair up in a towel and returned her toothbrush to her bathroom cup before going to the closet. There, she grabbed a simple blouse and skirt and put them on. She added a pair of earrings gifted from Yukine, a bracelet from Daikoku (because he didn’t trust Kofuku to gift her something that wouldn’t cause misfortune), and a purse from Bishamon that was too practical to have been selected without Kazuma’s input. They all glittered in a vague, dreamlike way that anything loved by the gods does, at least to Hiyori’s half-ayakashi eyes. They were holy, and by extension, so was she.
“Late, late, late,” she muttered, scooping up the bento boxes she’d made the night before and heading out the door.
///
The sun felt great upon her skin for the approximately three seconds she was able to feel it before Yato slammed a floppy, wide brimmed hat over her head. "Yato," Hiyori spluttered, raising the brim of the hat so she could see again. "What are you doing?"
"You'll get sunburnt if you don't wear sun protection," he fretted, gesturing to a large parasol set up to shade a blanket laid out on the ground next to Suzuha's tree. "Come on, I'll unpack everything when we get there."
Hiyori hid a smile as she took the hat off. After all this time, Yato still liked to fuss over her. She set her basket down on the blanket and took a moment to listen to the wind sighing through the trees. She never knew Suzuha personally, but she liked to think she knew him a little by the way Yukine would smile when he talked about him, or through the way Yukine took such good care of plants in his stead. Hiyori turned to bring Yato into her thoughts when she caught him staring at her, causing the bottom to drop out of her stomach. Even now, his eyes could make her wonder if this is what it was like to be worshipped.
He spoke first. "Do you want anything to drink?" He pointed to a cooler beaded with condensation. "There's also tea, for later."
"I'm set for now." At his drooping shoulders, she amended, "Fine, I’ll have some tea."
He perked up immediately. "I have it steeping in Tamagahara, I'll be right back!" He blinked out of sight and back within the span of a breath. "Easier to keep hot there," he explained as he gently laid the tray on the blanket.
Fragrant green tea steamed in the cool air. Yato set out small, round mugs and poured her a cup. It was a delicate porcelain, something that sparkled with that same otherworldliness as her other gifts from gods.
Their fingers brushed as he passed it to her, and her heart stuttered. Yato didn’t seem to notice.
“So what’s new with you, Hiyori?” His eyes shone with excitement and curiosity, but there was something else there, too, an over-brightness like when you stub your toe and don’t want your friends to know how much something so small really hurt you.
She took a small sip of tea to gather her thoughts. The last time she’d seen Yato in person was a little over a year and a half ago, although she’d spoken to him more frequently than that. When he’d first talked to her through the shrine, Hiyori had nearly punched a hole in the wall out of surprise, but it did allow them to speak every now and then.
“I already told you about the apartment,” she began, grimacing at the memory of how long it took to convince her family and friends she’d be fine living without a roommate.
“Yeah, it looks great!”
She froze. “You haven’t been in it yet.”
He looked a little abashed. “Well, you see, when we talk through the shrine, I can sort of, you know.” He waved his hand in a nervous flutter. “See through you, a little. Not actual sight, but more like impressions.” He closed his eyes, and his voice got quieter like he was recalling a special memory. “You get good sunlight there, and the air is clean, and you feel safe, right?”
Hiyori took a larger and no less scalding sip of tea. So that divine presence she felt every time she prayed was really..?
“Right, okay, yes. It’s a lovely apartment, Ame helped me move in and Yukine came to set up the furniture.” She smiled at the memory, at how stubbornly Yukine had insisted he could figure out the instructions on his own and how he tried to hide his excitement when she gave him a cheering chibi sticker for his trouble.
“And school’s been going well?”
“As well as it could be. If it isn’t exams I’m studying for, it’s practicals, and I’ve been up late most nights to make time for it all.”
Yato raised a hand as though he wanted to touch her face and then thought better of it. “You have dark circles under your eyes.”
“Staying top of the class won’t happen by getting enough sleep,” Hiyori replied, mostly in jest.
Yato caught her smile and leaned a little closer, close enough that the smell of him wrapped around her like a familiar jacket. “You know what might help? Praying to me for good grades.” His eyes were sparkling with mischief.
“You haven’t told me you’re trying to put Tenjin out of work,” Hiyori laughed.
“Oh yes, I’m cornering his market now.” Yato stood up and did something to his tracksuit to make it flourish like a cape. “Soon even Ebisu will be having to contend with my horde of worshippers.”
An image of Yato in the middle of a swarming crowd of adoring businessmen was enough to make her snort the sip of tea she was sipping right out of her nose, which of course set Yato off, and before she knew it she was wheezing into her empty cup, eyes streaming and hand dripping from the tea that had splashed out.
“All right, so I’m not the best with school or studies,” Yato said when he finally caught his breath. “I have learned something over the last few years, though.”
“Oh?”
“How to help stubborn humans relax.”
Hiyori rolled her eyes. “Does it involve a trip to Capypa Land? Because as much fun as it is to watch you whimper over Capypas, I really need to—“
“No Capypa Land this time,” Yato cut in hastily. “Even though it would be a happypa trip for the whole family,” he muttered. “Yukine made ice cream and demanded that I share some with you. I also have a patented relaxation technique that will have you feeling better in no time!”
“Is that so,” Hiyori said, a smile melting over her lips. “Do I get a refund if it’s not to my liking?”
Yato had begun rummaging through a small cooler during this exchange and looked up to say, grinning, “I’ve never had an unsatisfied customer.”
It was all so easy, the banter, the laughter, the aching muscles in her face. No matter how often Hiyori got to see Yato, each visit felt like coming home.
“So what flavor did Yukine make?” she asked, peering over Yato’s shoulder as he opened up a few containers.
“Salted dark chocolate with optional caramel drizzle.” He put two scoops into a bowl and held up the caramel. “Would you like some?”
“Please,” Hiyori said, delighted. “I didn’t know Yukine took up cooking now, too!”
Yato smiled fondly. “One of Bishamon’s shinki offered to teach him after he was skulking around the kitchens one day. Picked up on it pretty fast, too.” He placed a spoon in the bowl and handed it to her, then put a few scoops in a bowl for himself with a judicious ladle of caramel sauce.
“Ready?” he asked Hiyori, holding up a spoonful of ice cream doused in sauce.
“Ready.” Her own spoon was carefully loaded with just a touch of caramel so she could enjoy the ice cream’s original flavor.
Yato touched their spoons together in a toast before taking his bite, and Hiyori paused to watch his reaction. It had been so long since she had gotten to experience anything new with him; part of her ached to witness every moment.
“It’s good?” she asked, watching his lips curve up around the spoon.
“That kid really goes all the way when he learns something new,” Yato said appreciatively. “Who knew tree care would turn into fixing electronics and now cooking.”
“He applies himself well.”
“You helped him get started,” Yato said around another mouthful of ice cream. “He still talks about how great it was when you tutored him.”
Hiyori hummed. “It was great to teach him. He’s a wonderful soul, he just needed a place to focus his mind.”
Yato popped a spoonful of pure caramel into his mouth. “That reminds me, how was that other wonderful soul of yours doing?”
Hiyori stiffened. “We haven’t seen each other in months. He was so...so...distasteful!”
A dangerous gleam appeared in Yato’s eyes. “How distasteful?”
“Ami just needs to stop setting me up with people she meets at house parties,” Hiyori said. “She means well, but doesn’t have the best taste in men.”
“You’re very lucky I’m here, then, with my patented relaxation technique,” Yato said, putting down his empty bowl and scooting closer.
“Relaxation technique?” she repeated, eyes narrowed. “Wasn’t the ice cream the relaxation?”
“Just sit back and relax! Tell me more about what happened with the worthless scum.” He knelt behind her and swept her hair off her shoulder. Goosebumps peppered her skin where he brushed it.
“So, you were saying?” he prompted, hands resting on her shoulders. The weight of them was reassuring.
“It was nothing,” she began, breath catching when he began to knead the muscles around her neck. “He brought me to a dive bar and tried to make me do shots with him, and then when it was pouring rain when I finally convinced him to leave, he told me to run with him five blocks so the rideshare would be cheaper.”
Yato’s hands paused. “Any chance I can get his name?”
“Yato, no,” Hiyori chided as he continued her massage. “You’ve been so good about not terrorizing people who’ve been minor inconveniences to me, I’d hate to see you ruin your record.” She was distracted; he was working away knots she hadn’t known she’d had. Maybe she really should look into moving her study sessions earlier so she’d stop falling asleep on her desk...
“It sounds like this one would be worth it,” he muttered, digging into her shoulders a little too roughly.
“What about you? How has it been, being a god of fortune?” Hiyori asked after a few minutes of letting him drain the tension from her neck and shoulders.
His hands slipped away. “It’s been different,” he said, standing up and offering her a hand. “I think I’ve been so used to being on my own that being part of a group is strange.”
“Have there been problems with your neighbors again?” Hiyori asked. The last she’d heard, there had been a minor incident involving Takemikazuchi and an entire square kilometer of Tamagahara that had been leveled in his anger.
Yato started walking towards the cherry blossom tree. “No, I think that was his way of welcoming me. I thought that once I got what I wanted, everything would feel right.”
“And it doesn’t?” It had been so long since Yato opened up to her like this, showed up on a windowsill late at night and talked about what was on his mind. A warm feeling crept through her chest.
“No,” he said plainly, passing the wide trunk that showed the marks of Yukine’s care over the years. “Something is missing.”
She joined him under the boughs and inhaled. Fresh, clean, something a little like hope.
“I thought having more worshippers would make me happy,” he began, fingers trailing through some low hanging blossoms. “And they do, but it’s not what I thought it’d be.”
“Oh?”
“It’s lonelier than I imagined. Busier too; you have no idea how many people want to see me just to talk or vent. I always thought— well.”
Yato paused by a string of cherry blossoms, running his fingers through the petals as if they were a lover’s hair. “I always thought it’d be like having more people like you around. People who understood me.” He pinched off a strand and held it close to his chest, hesitant, before offering it to her. “But deep down I knew you were one-of-a-kind.”
Hiyori marveled at the soft translucence of the petals in his hand, the faint otherworldly shine they seemed to have in his divine presence. It was like an ayakashi miasma in reverse, a bubble of light and goodness, and she watched it travel up her arm and float her hair up on an invisible wind when she accepted the flowers.
“How long have you had this effect?” Hiyori said, turning her hand from side to side and admiring the richer colors and heady scent.
“Effect?” Yato murmured, eyes on the blossoms in her hand.
“The way everything sort of glows around you.”
He blinked at this and looked at the ground. “It’s sort of complicated.”
This sharpened her interest. “Complicated how? Did you have to perform some ritual? Does it only happen to gods with hafuri? Is it because you’re more popular these days?”
Yato’s face had sunk lower and lower into his scarf as she spoke. He mumbled something into it, still not looking at her.
Since Hiyori was well-versed in his moods, she simply crouched so that she was directly in his field of view. “Come again?”
“It’s because you’re my most devout believer,” he said, a light blush coloring his cheeks. “It’s like the opposite of a miasma. It can only happen when extreme faith persists.” He finally meets her eyes. “It means our ties are strong.”
Hiyori glimpsed an arc of woven sunlight twisting like infinity around them at his words, like something seen from the corner of your eyes.
“It’s my greatest treasure,” he confessed.
The world spun taffy thick. “So even though others believe in you now, I’m somehow..?”
“None of them are even close to this,” he said. “The shrine in your apartment is more home to me than any of the ones built in major cities.”
It was a lot to take in. Hiyori was used to being the backbone in her friendships, used to providing a solid, trustworthy space in which others could gain their footing. But being exalted to a god?
“I still think about what would’ve happened if I’d listened to Tenjin,” Yato continued, brushing a hand through the ties’ afterimage. “I am who I am because you’ve helped me become it. If our ties had been cut…” His hand fell to his side. “I might not be here right now, or I’d be some monster doing Father’s bidding.”
“I wouldn’t have made it out of plenty of situations without you, either,” Hiyori said slowly. “Isn’t that the nature of knowing someone? Being changed by them?”
Yato thought about this for a moment, the wind soft and gentle as it ruffled his hair. “Ever since I was small, Father had always told me that I was always in the right, always the one in control. That I could do whatever I wanted and others would adjust. I think it was supposed to make me feel powerful, but I didn’t want power. I wanted to belong.” Something like surrender was in his eyes when he said, “You were the first person to make me feel like I belonged in a very long time.”
It was too much. All of her pent up feelings — the fear, the hope, the confusion — from her high school days welled up at once, shattered from the amber in which she’d crystallized it once Yato defeated father and brought Yukine home.
“I’m glad,” she finally said when she was sure her voice wouldn’t shake. “Because you do belong, you and Yukine and Kofuku and Daikoku and —“
“With you?” Yato’s voice was so quiet it was like he hadn’t meant to say that aloud.
“Of course with me,” Hiyori said, feeling brave. “The same way I belong with you. That’s how this works. We’re already tied, right? Let’s just be tied. For however long that lasts.”
“For however long that lasts,” Yato murmured. It sounded like a vow.
The afternoon sun had taken on that tired golden edge that meant it was closer to sunset than noon. Hiyori’s heart was still beating a little too fast, her mind dizzy with implications that felt too raw to look at now.
“Thank you for coming today,” Yato said at last. “I missed you.”
“Now that I know I have the most important shrine in my apartment, I’m sure we can figure out ways to talk more,” Hiyori said, and was rewarded with another blush.
“May I take you home? There are a lot of leftovers to carry and Kofuku threatened to murder me if I came back with any.”
Hiyori laughed and started back towards their blanket. “Of course.”

Heat Wave
Tumblr media
“It’s hotter in here than a Devil’s tits in church.” She fanned herself with a sigh, the curled ends of her new flapper cut sticking to her apple cheeks. Her skin was glistening in sickly sweet sweat. Even she felt like she was showing too much skin for a flapper; her blue frock the lasted summer fashion from Chanel that was a runway season ahead because it was too damn hot to wear the sleeved spring designs.
But there was at least one person in the room who liked what they saw. Michael Gray; the dark-haired, green-eyed mysterious gangster from London who was making a name and reputation for himself in New York, just like the southern belle trying to fit into the flapper world of life in the city.
She could feel his eyes on her every once in a while, watching how she fanned herself, chin pointed up towards the fan, beads of sweat trickling down her neck towards her bosom.
She wasn’t blameless either, her eyes glued to him across the room, watching as he looked for relief in his glass of whiskey. She watched his lips curve around the glass, her thoughts beginning to wander, her cheeks growing hotter at her thoughts...
“Oh, you and your euphemisms...” one of their friends tutted. It was a normal Tuesday afternoon. The young elite of New York were spending it like they would have, an extended lunch break filled with gossip, jazz music, bottomless drinks of imported alcohol in crystal glasses.
“I’m sorry that it’s hotter than hell and half of Georgia, I can’t help it.”
“Also known as a heat wave love,” Michael said with a shrug, eyes on her as she stretched along the chaise to get more air wafting over her from the fan.
“Well heat wave or not, if it gets any hotter, I'll have to take off stuff I really ought to keep on.”
“Doesn’t sound like a bad option to me; if it’ll cool you down that is...”
“I’m sure you would like that.”
“I would.”
Just like that it seemed ten degrees hotter in the room, unbearable really as she undid just the topmost button and fished an ice cube out of the bowl in front of the fan and pressed it to her neck until it dripped into her skin. And her he still watched her closely, licking hips lips, dying of thirst.
“What did you used to do down in those southern heat waves?”
“Southern heat waves were just normal summer days; we lived at the beach.”
“I’ve never been to the beach...”
“Never? Do they not have beaches in England?” She was surprised to say the least when there actually weren’t many. “What would you do at a beach anyway? Sweat in your suit?” She couldn’t imagine him in swimming pants wading into the water, but she could picture it really, her mind wandering.
“Why don’t you take me to one and you’ll find out...”
She was expecting that, reaching forward to get a cool glass of water and cool herself down again. “Well... it seems like you’ve forgotten we’re in the heart of the city, no beaches around here Mr. Gray. Unless you can conjure one up with all that money of yours.”
“While it can’t do that, it could definitely conjure up a private jet to one of those beaches you were talking about...”
“Might as well sweep us off to Antarctica at this rate.” Fanning herself again she felt momentary relief, smiling under his stare as it now felt like it was only the two of them in the room. “You ever been swimming?”
“Have I ever been swimming?” He scoffed. “Course I have.”
“I’d like to see that. Imagine you flipping around like a fish,” she giggled.”
“I’ll have you know I do not flop around like a fish, I look like an Olympic swimmer out there on the water.”
“You’ll have to show me.”
“Let’s go right now.”
“Where? The closest thing we have is the Manhattan River. It’s practically the backdrop for every sci-fi movie about mutant fish monsters.”
“What would you say to a proper first date up in the country?”
“Gangster’s whose tie is tied a little too tight say what?”
“What?”
“Are you serious?”
“Come and find out.”
She had seen a lot of impressive houses in her life but nothing like this; this was a cabin on steroids. The exterior made from real logs, towering over watch of a secluded lake in the upper mountains of New York in a place she could barely pronounce. This would be one she told stories about.
“You really think you can drive that Gray?”
He was waiting in the most summer outfit he would ever wear; a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and slacks. He was in a little rowboat owned by the property, holding his hand out for her to join, which she did reluctantly but the second their hands touched it was like fireworks.
She was in a new summer frock with her bathing suit underwear, sitting like a true southern belle at the haul of their mighty ship with a lacy parasol blocking out the sun.
“It can’t be that different from a car.”
“Watch where you go,” she said skeptically as the boat rocked back and forth. Her plans were sweating as she gripped the sides while the boat rocked. She’d never been so close to him. It was still hot in this part of New York too, watching the beads of sweat that appeared on his forward, watching closely as his veins seemed to ooo under the golden sun as he rowed them further from the dock.
“So, what do you think?”
“I think the city life is better suited to you.”
“Really? Hm, I’ll have to show you otherwise.” With a smirk he rowed harder, the boat moving faster until it all happened so fast and he lost balance and control of the ship. Before she even knew what had happened she was left along with the paddle as Michael was overboard, the small splash a real relief to her in the moment.
“Michael! Are you alright?” Concerned she checked over the haul and he seemed to be staying sing just fine.
“Yeah, yeah I’m alright, help me?” She couldn’t refuse those puppy dog eyes of his and offered a hand to help.
It was a blonde side.
Rather than helping him back into the ship he had a hand in killing her into the lake beside him, laughing  at her shocked reaction until she came up from the water, hands fighting against his chest.
“Michael Gray! You did that on purpose.”
His hands found home in the small of her back. “And so what if I did?”
“A lady should never go swimming with a man, it’s too risqué.”
“But you’re not a lady anymore, are you?” He pulled her close.
This is exactly what she had needed; relief. The cool water around her, his *hands* around her.
“And what if I said I wasn’t?”
“Then I would do this.” He kissed her quickly but deeply. So deeply it made the heat rise in her cheeks, starting at her core and slowly, slowly, climbing up.
“I could spend every day at the lake with you Gray, if they’re like this.”
And just like that she liked lakes better than beaches, heatwaves better than continental days, and Michael more than her heart would admit.
Hope you like it! Leave comments please, they’d be really appreciated! A small ship and fic for the person who can correctly guess where the inspo for the first part of this came from!??!
Happy Easter y’all 🐣💐🐣

Bbrae week 2021
Day two: Poolside
Raven wanted to blame curiosity for this.
Living on earth gave Raven many opportunities to explore things she had always been denied. Her mother, Arella, was a human after all and she always wondered about how her life used to be before coming to Azarath. So she most times wondered how living on Earth would be like as a kid, dreaming about seeing it once in her life.
Despite the way Azarathians always treated her, no one could deny that she was half human; humanity was a part of her. So she tried out new things and learnt many things she couldn't even imagine before; Like having coffee, listening to music, shopping, going to supermarkets or even riding a bike.
Perhaps wearing a bikini was a part of that.
Shifting uncomfortably on the pool chair, Raven tried to make sure she wasn't too exposed to her teammates while reading her book under the parasol. The summer sun was so hot and from her experience, she knew it wouldn't end well if she stayed too long under it.
Raven looked at herself. How on earth was it considered clothing? It didn't cover anything! She was basically showing her whole butt to everyone and she knew her nipples were visible through such a thin top. She could have as well be naked and no one would tell the difference.
Looking up from her sunglasses, Raven saw how confidently and comfortably Kory was in her bikini. Raven didn't know how that was possible, but Kory's bikini was even worse than hers; yet the princess found no difficulties showing off her almost naked body.
Raven noted to herself: Next time bring Donna for shopping!
The laughter from the pool caught her attention. Donna, Roy alongside with Garfield and Dick were playing volleyball in the pool, Victor as usual was in charge of the cooking, saying something about he didn't trust anyone with cooking, and Kory was lying under the sun, trying to get tanned; which was questionable to everyone why her of all people.
Raven was sort of glad Kory was comfortable showing so much skin. When Kory was around with her shiny skin, barely people would notice her. It took away all the attention she didn't need.
Well, almost all the attention.
Smash!!
"Oh damn! Gar, you okay man?" Roy said apologetically before swimming towards The Changeling with a worried face who was groaning in pain and holding his nose up.
"Dude! Why would you throw the ball like that?!" Gar snapped at Roy and whined, "Ugh!"
"Sorry man." Roy apologized, "I thought you'd get it."
Dick, holding the said ball in his hand, swam towards Gar, "Don't be such a baby Gar. It was just an accident."
Gar gave him a an annoyed look as Donna approached him.
"Take a moment Gar." She said pointing at where Raven was busy reading with her thumb, "But it's weird how you didn't see the ball coming."
"Yeah exactly. Did you have your head in the clouds?" Dick asked with a smirk.
Before Gar could even open her mouth, Wally who was playing frisbee with himself suddenly stopped running and said, "No not in the clouds," he titled his head to where Raven was sitting, "totally on the earth, probably on a pool chair."
Donna chuckled quietly as Gar looked at Wally with an angry face but he just shrugged and threw the frisbee again to catch it. Putting a hand on Gar's back Dick said, "maybe you should rest for a moment."
Gar nodded and walked to the edge of the pool, hoping Raven didn't notice this embarrassing accident and Wally's stupid remark. Thankfully, she seemed to be in her world.
Raising her head from her book, Raven saw Gar approaching her. She could feel a slight pain from him but his face didn't reveal anything.
"Are you okay?"
Gar stopped near the edge, "yeah...just taking a moment."
Raven nodded and went back to her reading. She saw Gar pressing his back on the edge and rested his arms, looking at the game. Her eyes widened as she took a long, impressed look at his back.
Dick's trainings must have paid off because when did Gar exactly become so muscular? They saw each other everyday so how did she miss his process becoming...that?
"What are you reading?" Gar's head suddenly spun to her and he seemed like he was waiting to ask her that question. Raven thanked Azar she was wearing sunglasses otherwise he would have seen how she was shamelessly staring at his back.
Trying to act normal, she just raised her book so he would read the title on the cover.
"The Witcher?" Gar read the title, "Sounds cool. Let me see!"
Using his arms, Gar pulled himself up from the water, revealing more of his body for Raven to see.
Azar, help her! When did he become like this? Raven tried to remember if she had missed the time he was becoming this muscular without her noticing because she could swear he wasn't like that last time she saw his torso and his arms. Along with his shiny green skin, he was almost impossible not to look at.
He sat on the stool beside her chair and leaned his elbows on his knees to get a better look at what she was reading. Raven could feel the heat coming from his body and suddenly felt it was so hotter than it was a minute ago.
"Guess it's fantasy right?"
Raven nodded without speaking. She couldn't trust her voice when he was this close to her. Looking from her sunglasses, Raven couldn't take her eyes off his body. Water droplets were racing down on his stomach and his wet hair looked so soft and shiny.
Azar, she wanted to touch it! She wanted to feel those muscles under her hands and feel the heat coming from them. She wanted to run her fingers on his skin and play with his hair!
"By the way Rae…" Gar slidded the chair closer to her as Raven could feel the blush on her face. His body was just inches away from hers and Raven couldn't focus on what she seemed to be reading.
"You look... amazing in your new swimsuit."
She could see a shade of blush appearing on his face as he said it. Suddenly, Raven became aware that she was in a bikini, showing her almost naked body to Gar! While he was just an inch away from her!
Holding the book closer to her face, "Thanks."
Gar smiled and took a long look at her legs then looked back at her and Raven just wished she could see if what he was seeing gave him the same feeling.
Did he like what he was seeing?
She hated how she cared about something that stupid. Why would she care about what he thought about her body? It was hers for a good reason.
"Rae…" he whispered.
Looking up from the book, she saw his blushing face. Scratching the back of his head, he opened his mouth.
"I wanted to say-"
"Gar! You're good now for another round?" Dick shouted, "because Wally here doesn't know how to play!"
"Hey I can play! You guys are just too slow!" Wally said in defense.
Sighing in frustration, Gar turned his head to others, "I'll come in a sec!"
Garfield seemed unwilling for a moment, but still stood up. Then as if he got a new idea he looked down at Raven with a smile.
"Hey, why don't you play with us?" He asked, "The water is so refreshing."
Raven shook her head, "No thanks. I'd really rather read."
"Come on Rae! You don't even have to play. Just hit the water. You won't regret it." He sounded almost desperate.
Raven held the book closer to her face, either as a sign of unwillingness or to hide her red face. "No."
She didn't mean to sound rude but knowing her being in water meant being physically closer to him, Raven decided it was for the best if she stayed where she was and not to think further about his body.
Garfield seemed sad for a moment but didn't say anything. He went to the edge and gave Raven a very good view of his butt then jumped into the water, splashing a few water droplets on Raven's legs. It didn't ruin her book so she didn't complain.
She saw him playing skillfully, hitting the ball with such a strength she didn't know he had and swimming so easily that she wondered if he turned into a fish. He was just so hard to look away from.
Raven cursed herself for not watching the first round if that's what she could have seen. Him being unfairly attractive and eye catching to the point she couldn't even pay attention to her surroundings. Her book, left open and forgotten in her hands was waiting for her to read another sentence whereas she was busy ogling Beast Boy for a good time.
If Beast Boy was the correct name for him in the first place.
"Yeah that's what I'm talking about!" Dick cheered as he high-fived Gar when he scored.
"Hey guys! Hotdogs are ready!"Victor shouted from the barbecue, "I also made one vegan for you green bean."
"Okay Cy. Thanks." Gar said as they all started to get out of the pool one by one.
Raven tried to take the chance to refocus on the book. However, the more she looked at it, the less she could comprehend the words; almost as if English was an unknown language for her.
Her whole head was filled with Gar in his awfully tight swim shorts. Raven hated how they were so tight that they didn't leave much things into her imagination. She didn't know if she didn't like how exposed he was to her or how he was exposed to others as well.
Maybe he could even be equal with Roy in skills if he wanted to? Or even Dick? Based on his performance in the pool, Raven believed he might be able to. He definitely was no longer the small teenager anymore.
"Here."
Gar's voice almost startled her. Raven looked up and saw him offering her one of the hotdogs Cyborg had made.
She sat up, trying her best not to look suspicious. "Thanks."
Gar nodded and sat again on the stool beside her, and started eating his food. Putting her book open on her lap, Raven tried to keep her face away from him and pretend she was enjoying the view in front of her; even if her view was Wally eating a bunch of hotdogs.
She just had to endure this for a couple of minutes. When Gar was done eating, he would be gone for another round and leave her and her mind alone. Maybe she could finally focus on enjoying the pool day rather than how he would react if she asked him to change his swim shorts.
"Umm Rae?" Gar asked, "weren't you on the exact same page when I left?"
Raven's head spun quickly to him and she saw him looking at the book on her lap with a confused face.
As fast as she could, she grabbed the book and started clumsily flipping the pages.
"I-It fell!" She stuttered while flapping the pages, "I had to...it wasn't the right page so I just couldn't find…"
She was talking nonsense now. She could feel her face getting hotter by each second as she was trying to find a proper page to make her point. But it was too late now. From the corner of her eyes she saw Gar smirking at her.
Oh Azar he knew!
She looked at him with a frown. No way she was letting him enjoy this!
"What?!" Her voice was louder than she intended, making the smirk on his face even wider.
Scooting the stool closer to her, Garfield put a hand on her book, stopping her from flipping the pages randomly.
"You'd rather read a book than come to swim with us in the pool huh?" He whispered, "now I know why."
Raven couldn't even find her voice when he was gazing at her like that. She felt her face was hotter than the sun above her but she couldn't find the strength to look away from him.
She was caught!
Still smirking, Gar whispered again. "You could have just said it, you know. I'd have made it much more enjoyable for you."
"Oh shut up Gar!" She snapped, glad that she found her voice again. "It's nothing like that."
He chuckled at her frowning face. "Sure Rae."
"I wasn't staring at you!"
"Never said you were." His smirk somehow got wider, "But it's good that you mentioned it could possibly be the case."
Azar he was teasing her! Raven awfully wished she never said anything. It was so embarrassing. He knew it! He knew she was looking at him the whole time. Knowing Gar, he would be teasing her till the end of time for this.
His face was just an each away from hers now but opposite of minutes ago, it wasn't because he wanted to look at her book. He was this close to look at her!
He looked down at her lips and Raven's heart froze. No! He was not going to kiss her! No matter how soft and delicious his lips seemed or how much she wished he would. They couldn't just kiss in front of others.
His nose touched hers and Raven just closed her eyes. Her whole face felt hot and his body heat was making everything much hotter, especially how this time she could feel his knees into her legs.
"You're cute when you're flustered." He whispered and gently put her sunglasses on her forehead, taking a good long look at her blushing face.
Raven wished the Earth would open and swallow her whole body. She felt his hot finger on her cheek caressing it gently.
Azar why was he hesitating? She just wished he would kiss her already!
"Cheer for me okay?"
She opened her eyes confused. "What?"
Before she could react, Gar pressed his lips on her right cheek, kissing her lightly.
This time her book did fall on the floor. His soft lips on her cheek felt amazing and Raven didn't even get time to say anything. He kissed her! Garfield actually kissed her when they were both almost naked. The whole concept of what happened made Raven shiver under his touch.
He pulled away slightly and whispered to her ear. "Hope you'll enjoy it."
Suddenly he got up from his seat, leaving Raven dumbfounded, and shouted, "Hey Dick! Wanna race?"
"Oh you're on!" The Boy Wonder said challenging from his chair near Kory.
Raven didn't know what happened. One moment Gar was in front of her eyes smirking at her, the next she found him racing with Dick to the other side of the pool.
Now knowing he had an eager audience, Gar spared no pains making sure she enjoyed what she was watching; even if she seemed to be reading the book she quickly picked up from the floor. It was fake reading. She was staring at him! So why not give her what she wanted? Or maybe a bit more?
Gar saw her taking glances at him constantly; obviously she forgot that she didn't have her glasses on her eyes and he could catch her watching what he was doing when he looked at her.
She would get her revenge of course. Raven wasn't the type of person to just let him tease her without a payback. Till that time, Gar decided to enjoy this and let her enjoy as well.
Frowning at him, Raven knew what he was doing. That stupid green Titan was mostly showing his skills off to her than competing with others. He would often glance at her with his stupid grin when he nailed a dive or did an outstanding swimming move; telling her that yes! I know you're watching!
Not wanting to tolerate more of his teasing, Raven used her telekinesis power and splashed water on his stupid face when he turned around and winked at her in the pool.
"Rae!"
Proud of what she did, Raven held the book in front of her face again, fully aware she was not going to be able to read another line.

Of Bad Beer and Summer Nights. #Writer Wednesday 04/28/21 Javier Peña x f!reader
Tumblr media
Summary: it’s just another summer day at the pool. Sunbathing before your shift starts, the day changes drastically when you cannot take your eyes off a handsome stranger.
Warning: mention of alcohol and swearing. NSFW +18 SMUT (oral and p in v sex)
Paring: Javier Peña x F! reader
A/N: Another take on the #Writer Wednesday challenge by @autumnleaves1991-blog !!
Not me basing all this on the label of the beer that’s shown on the cans and my obsession with Javier Peña and his ridiculous fashion choices. This is the first thing I write with a little spice on it and I’m still not that comfortable but we’re getting there. Not beta’d and my eyes are burning so I have read it just once so if they’re any mistakes, misspellings and bad grammar I’m really sorry.
Of bad beer and summer nights
The kids’ screams from the pool muffles the tunes of some old ranchera blasting from the bar’s stereo. The old guard of retire men gather around the plastic white tables drinking cold beer and playing dominoes and you lower your book, sunbathing under this blazing sun, and smile; this is your childhood, your home and even that you had convinced yourself that you were done with this, that you wanted to run away, this speaks to your nostalgia and the fondest memories you own.
The heat makes you lazy and your stretch your body feeling your bones as if they were made of jelly. You drop the book on your stomach; you were not actually paying too much attention to it anyway and look around the pool: kids running around with water guns, angry mothers trying to control them and the men on the bar. Usually they’re around 70 or plus on average, they occupy their usual spot under the parasols early in the morning and spend their time doing their retirement routine: newspaper, same old conversation and complain about the world, beer and dominoes, until it’s time to eat or to switch their drink to coffee. But today a tall, lean, brown haired man is breaking the age median. He’s younger and stands out not only for his strong physic but because he wears a bright pink shirt and some yellow aviators and the tightest jeans you’ve seen on a man. You’re sure you’d question anybody else’s fashion choice if they were wearing that, but surprisingly, it fits him, probably because he exudes confidence, maybe it’s his broad shoulders, maybe it’s his golden skin revealed by the way–too-much-unbuttoned shirt he wears, maybe it’s his dark hair or his striking features or maybe it’s because of his dark coffee brown eyes that are fixed on you. His eyes. Shit.
You were so absorbed looking at him that you didn’t realize he had taken off his glasses and it’s now seated facing the pool and you from the bar. He smirks when you try, ungracefully, to grab your book back, the paper is stuck to your skin since you had spread it generously with tanning oil. The pages are ruined but you actually don’t care, you just open it before your eyes and try to conceal that you were looking at him like a creep. After a few minutes, you raise the novel just enough to see if he's looking but he's gone. Disappointed, you turn to the other side and let the sun bronze your skin and achieve that serene state that you had before he arrived at the pool.
"Hey, you, burnt sloth, it's time" somebody pokes on your shoulder
"Burnt sloth, seriously?" You say, you feel your mouth is dry and your brain is slowly coming back to life "it's my shift already?"
"Yep, actually you're two minutes late" Marisa grabs the elastic of your bikini bottom and pulls it and lets it go until it slaps your skin
"Ouch! I'm coming" you finally get up
"C'mon, Mr. Garcia has joined the party at the bar, and you'll be late for his speech on the loss of traditional family values" she announces. You glance at the other side of the pool, the old man walks with difficulty towards his retired friends table
"Shit, you do it on purpose" you say and Marisa smirks "my shift always starts when there's one of the annoying customers time to arrive, that's not fair"
"Is there anybody attending the bar?!" You both turn to see Mr. Garcia raising his cane and screaming at you
"I'm coming" you answer, grabbing your jean shorts and the white shirt with staffwritten on it. You toss your clothes on over your bikini and run towards the bar.
"Sorry, Mr. Garcia, the usual?" You ask while tying up your apron
"Yes, please. This is what's wrong with this country now the youth has lost the will to work hard to really make an effort…"
Even his friends roll their eyes, but you know it will be a minute until he finishes the list of bad things he wants to rant about.
Marisa has occupied your deck chair and winks at you while she spreads her sun cream. Bitch you mutter towards her and she smiles and lays back.
The rest of your shift consists in ignoring Mr. Garcia and looking at Marisa with jealousy. When the sun is almost gone she joins you on the counter.
"I'll have until Jack comes to pick me up, I thought you needed some company" she says bending herself over the bar to grab a glass
"Yeah, now that they're about to leave, how convenient" you point to the old men table "what do you want?"
"Beer please"
You take two ice cold cans and serve hers on her glass while you keep yours under the wood counter
“Tomorrow you will take my shift by the way" you say leaning on the fridge
"Nope" she says having a sip of her drink
"You wanna bet?" You counter knowing that she likes to play. She thinks about it for a second but when you open the cards box and leave the deck in front of her she nods
"Just for tomorrow though" Marisa shakes your hand and you distribute the cards between you two.
You try to focus on the game, she's better than you and you really don't want to take another shift like this. But all your concentration leaves your body once you see out of the corner of your eyes, a pink bright shirt and a tall figure.
"Hi, are you ready Pops?" He says, his voice is deep while he gently taps on one of the old men at the table
"No, give me a minute, I'm actually winning for once" he says laying one of the domino pieces on the table
"Right" he smiles warmly at him and you think he couldn't be more handsome but he actually approach the counter and now, looking at him closer he’s even more attractive
“Can I have a beer please?” he asks taking a seat on a stool. You nod and grab one from the fridge.
He examines the golden can with an arched eyebrow “Don’t you have a bud?”
“No, we only have calidad (quality) and let me warn you that the title is actually ironic” you answer, for a second you hope he doesn’t actually get mad at your little joke but he smiles widely “I trust you then, I won’t take my chances with this so... can I have a whiskey then?” he pass you the can and you turn to put it back on the fridge and glance over the bottles you have. All of them are the cheapest labels on the market, but you know your boss reserves some good old Jack Daniels well hidden and you crouch down to get it from the back of the utilities cupboard.
“I don’t know if I want that drink either if you took it from where you keep the cleaning stuff” he laughs
“Don’t worry, it’s legit, it’s my boss’s. He doesn’t want to expend one cent on the clients but for himself...that’s another thing” you pour him the amber liquor and you cannot help but notice that he’s looking at you intently
“You don’t serve whiskey often, right?” he gets closer and almost whispers it in your ear
“Why?” you ask and raise your head suddenly realizing that you’re really close. His scent is intoxicating, some fresh body wash and the musk of his cologne mixed with the whiskey you’re serving him
“Normally you will serve just two or three fingers” he explains putting two of his fingers on the glass so you can see what he means, the glass is half full.
“Shit” you stop pouring and leave the bottle on the counter while he chuckles
“Either that or you’re really generous or I’m and excellent costumer” he jests
“You are!” you respond right away and you clear your throat once you realize how stupid it sounded “or I’m a terrible waitress, I think that’s more probable”
“Agreed!” Marisa claims, you actually forgot about her
“I don’t think so” he shakes his head “You were really honest about the quality of the beer, you could have just gave me that trash and say nothing”
“Well, I’m drinking one while working, I keep it hidden under the counter and I’m gambling with my friend to see if I can change my shift for hers tomorrow” you confess, he looks amused at you
“What shift is that?” he asks
“Morning, there’s none” Marisa answers
“You actually cannot take that shift” he looks at you now
“Why?” you say puzzled
“Because you’re busy tonight, probably will arrive late and you should sleep” he sips his whiskey and you still observe him not understanding
“I’m not...”
Marisa smack her lips “she’s clueless”
“I see” he smiles again, that damn smile “at what time do you close?”
“She’ll be off at seven” Marisa answers and you turn your head from one to the other like you’re watching a tennis game you don’t really understand
“What are you...”
“He’s asking you out, dummie” Marisa rolls her eyes at you with a frustrated grunt
“Oh!”
“If it’s alright for you unless you really want that early morning shift” he looks at you from under his lashes and you don’t know how a man like that can be smoldering hot one minute and this cute the next
“She’s going!” Marisa answers before you could make your mind
“Wait, I have nothing to wear and I have to...”
“There’s a dress on my locker, the code is 6754 and I don’t trade my shift anyway, you don’t have excuses” a car horns from the door “That’s Jack, don’t take no for an answer!” she points to the man running towards her boyfriend’s car.
“There’s no pressure, if you don’t want to...”
“No, I want to, really” you say focusing on the stains on your apron
“I’m Javi by the way” he smiles fondly and raises his hand, you respond with your name and shake it
“Really nice to meet you” you say softly
“Let’s go, son, this damned dominoes are jinxed!” his father walks out from the table gathering a few laughs and jokes from his friends
Javi reaches from his wallet when Mr. Garcia raises his cane again “Don’t let him pay, anything he had it’s on me”
You look at him confused and Javier, for the first time in your brief acquaintance looks shy and actually uncomfortable. He thanks the man and walks to his father about to leave the place
“I’ll pick you up at seven” he says, winking at you
“Can we have the check young lady or do we have to do it ourselves” Mr. Garcia gets you out of your daydreaming and you rush to clean up and say goodbye to the old loyal customers before they leave you alone to close.
You don’t actually have time to do much, just shower and look inside Marisa’s locker hoping for the best. You find a white summer dress and some flat sandals that fit you, you try your best with your hair and the little make up you have in your bag. And you wait for Javi to arrive.
Tumblr media
He’s punctual, arriving just on time on his pick up car.
“Hi”
“Hi” he has changed for another bright shirt, this time blue that matches his skin perfectly. He wears those yellow sunglasses and the same tight jeans and you cannot believe that you actually think it’s the most gorgeous a man has look ever. You staring more that you should again, how the muscles on his forearm tense and relax while driving
“We’re going outside Laredo, if you don’t mind” he says eventually
“It’s fine by me, unless you’re planning to kill me and leave me in the middle of nowhere” you shot
“No, I’m not planning to do that” he chuckles
He takes you to one of those big restaurants outside the city with live music and the best BBQ you’ve ever tasted. The conversation flows nicely even if you have to slap yourself sometimes because you continue to stare in a very obvious way.
“So, why did Mr. Garcia pay for your drink?” you ask after while “He never does one kind thing for nobody, are you a celebrity or something?” you joke
“You actually don’t know?” he drinks from his beer and he has a curious look on him
“No, are you famous?”
He makes a gesture with his hand “Mmm more or less”
“I go every weekend to the movies so it’s certainly not movies” you guess and you place your hand on your chin “Singing? Do you sing rancheras? it’s the only thing he likes so... c’mon sing!”
“You don’t want to hear that”
“Okay, so it’s not singing” you bite your lip trying to come up with something “are you one of those dude’s that do that thing with the lasso” and you mimic the gesture
“A professional cowboy?” he laughs out loud “No, nothing really artistic about my fame”
“Okay” you reflect on what he said and after a few minutes you slap the table “I got it! You’re actually a very famous mobster and Mr. Garcia owes you money, always thought he had some shady business going on”
“Do I look like a mobster?” he laughs
“No! I don’t mean it like that”
“But you thought about it”
“It’s just...” you stutter
“What?”
“You exude confidence, you look cocky and very sure of yourself kinda like you own the place when you walk in and people do what you say” you explain blushing “dangerous and sexy” the beer is kicking in harder than you thought and you lean on his shoulder “like you can kill somebody” his amused expression fades and a dark and timid veil covers his face
“Oh shit” you answer “ H-have you?” you murmur, he nods softly and averts his eyes
“Well, if you’re not in jail I guess you are...law enforcement? army?”
“DEA” he responds with a deep breath
“How...how does a DEA agent become famous?”
“I was part of the team that hunted Pablo Escobar” he answers, his arms are crossed on the table and he’s looking down
“Are you kidding?” you gasp “Did you meet him? Are you the one that shot him?”
“I was not even there when it happened and never actually met him”
You can see his eyes glowing and how tense he looks now, all confidence and bravado is gone and he finishes his beer leaving your date in an uncomfortable point
“I’m sorry I brought that up” you brush your hand over his, yours looking small against his “I was joking, I’m obviously clueless about dates and have a big mouth, I’m sorry again”
“No, no” he holds your hand between his warm palms “I really thought you’d heard, that’s why I wanted to take you out from Laredo where everybody brings that up”
You hold your head on your hands “I’m an idiot, I’m sorry”
“Hey, hey!” he takes your hands and brushes his fingers on your chin until you look at him in the eye “It’s not your fault, let’s move on, okay?” his thumb is closer now to your lower lip and you see his eyes lowering until he’s looking at your mouth for a second before he points to the dance floor “Do you dance?”
“Not well”
“Me neither”
“Do we give it a go and make a fool of ourselves?” he asks holding your hand and you nod enthusiastically
The people on the dance floor judge you when you actually don’t know the moves that goes with this type of music, but you’re laughing like little kids and you see how he tries to hold you every time he gets the chance, his big hands on your waist, and arm on your lower back that burns like the sun and when finally they change to a slow song, he presses you against his chest and you moan softly when he locks you there with his hands on your back. You reach for his neck and tangle your fingers on his nape.
“I have a confession to make, agent” you whisper on his ear
“Hm?”
“I was looking at you at the pool and hoped that you came back when you left and actually ruined my novel in the process”
“And I was looking back at you and came back to pick up my father when he actually didn’t need it” he responds, his warm breath over your temple, you smile openly and you think your heart could leave your chest in that very moment
“and another thing...”
“Yes?”
“I never actually liked guys with mustache and now all I can think about is how does it feel when you kiss” you hide your face from him feeling his laughter resonate on his chest
“Wanna try?”
You raise your head even though your cheeks burn and your rational brain in screaming that you barely know the guy but then his lips brush over your softly and they’re as soft as they looked, you let him lead you mainly because the sensation is overwhelming and when he gently touches your mouth with his tongue you let him in, you let him taste you and you moan, Javi smiles briefly over your soft expression of pleasure and becomes more eager, hardening the kiss. You don’t know how long you’ve been there but when you break the kiss your head is spinning and you have to hold onto his shoulders
“So?” he says with a cocky smile
“Nice, really nice”
Tumblr media
You don’t want this night to end, you park alongside the riverbank in Laredo, he has put down a big blanket on his pickup truck so you’re comfortable seating on it and Javier bought some cold beer at the gas station. The summer night is clear; the moon and stars shine and are reflected on the black waters of the river and you can only hear the soft sounds of the insects and the breeze moving the grass.
“Can I ask you something?” you’re both seated next to each other, swinging your legs until you touch him
“Yes”
“Why did you choose the DEA?”
“I just wanted to get away from here” he shrugs
“You caused too much trouble? Broke too many hearts?” you jest tapping his arm with your elbow
“Why do you say that?” he turns to face you
“You look like someone who could do that” you murmur “Are you going to break my heart?” Now you adjust your position so now you’re both face to face
“I hope not”
You think over his answer, it’s actually pretty honest. You had had promises of eternal love and “never ever going to hurt you” before and then they left you with your heart bleeding and your confidence undermined. So you prefer this, the truth. Neither of you know what’s going to happen, there’s only tonight and that you don’t want to get back to real world. The river, the moon and the two of you on his car are the only thing real, they only thing that exists right now.
You arise on your knees and save the distance between you holding his head on your hand. It’s you who lead the kiss this time and he lets you savor him. He holds your hips and gently pushes you on his lap. You lower your kisses to his jaw and then his neck tasting his perfume mixed with his sweat that it’s the only thing you’ve been thinking about doing since this morning, he emits a guttural moan and you feel your arousal between your thighs. Your hands act faster that you can think and unbuttons his shirt. In the moonlight his skin is soft and it’s splattered in small freckles that you kiss trying to count each one with a touch of your lips.
He doesn’t stay still for much longer and raises your summer dress kneading the skin of your legs, up to your butt and your hips. He separates you from him and you’re about to complain when you feel he’s pushing you softly to the blanket. You lay down taking a deep breath while your gaze at the night sky full of tiny bright dots that reminds you of his skin and how you crave to have him on your lips again.
You raise your head once you feel him touching your calf, his fingers softly trailing over you until he take off your sandals, and when it’s done, he grabs your legs and roam his hands up and down on them until he pulls your legs apart. Javier gets in the space between your legs and without breaking his burning look at your eyes, he takes off his shirt and unbuckles his belt.
“Please” you whisper and reach your hand towards him; he takes it and kisses your palm before bending over you. The hunger you have for his lips is finally over when he kisses you again deep and moaning against your lips.
He mimics what you did earlier and bites your jaw and your neck, scattering kisses over your clavicles. He gets up an instant just to take off your dress and admires you for a second before continuing his kisses where he had left them. You bend your back when your breasts are exposed to the fresh summer air but are immediately cover by his big warm hands and then his mouth graze each one with the most delicious attention kissing and licking your nipples until biting your lip can’t contain your whimpers
“You don’t have to be quite, there’s none” he says liberating your lower lip from your bite with his thumb “Your moans will be only for my ears and I want to listen to every single one of them” he says and leaves a kiss on your sternum before grabbing your waist pressing his face on your stomach and again repeats the action of spattering kisses and soft bites to your skin.
Once he reaches the elastic of your panties he looks at you intently. You’re a moaning mess, squirming under his touch and feeling your flesh ablaze even if the night is actually quite fresh
“Please” you whisper again and he softly raises your hips rolling the lace over your thighs. The midnight air makes you shiver. He kisses again your belly over the tan marks biting gently your hip bones before parting your legs widely.
He softly tortures you avoiding your core. His mouth licking and brushing his teeth on each thigh deeper and deeper and before arriving to the center he changes his position to the other leg
“Javi” you moan
“You’re so beautiful” he murmurs, lying on his side he leans his head on your inner right thigh. He’s as gentle as first as he was before leaving tempting kisses on your mount and folds before opening your lips to drink of you eagerly. His moans resonate through your body as an electric current and your nails scratch the blanket bellow. You call his name like a prayer, the pleasure is uncontrollable while you hope for release, he slides his fingers inside you and pumps them upwards and then you are lost in his presence and in the night above you. You hear yourself scream, your conscience is far away.
He hushes you and holds you in his arm and you waste no time in kissing him again, a deep hard kisses in which you pour all your passion and your lust. Your hands act on their own and you reach for his jeans and force them down enough until your palming his cock.
Javi understand your needs and takes down his jeans and underwear rapidly coming back to the position between your thighs. Your eyes are locked on his body admiring how he touches himself and you raise your upper body to caress his chest
“Please Javi I need you”
“Lay down” he orders, his voice is lower now and you quiver “Impatient girl” he smirks
You obey and Javier grabs your hips and he adjusts himself towards your entrance. You open your mouth once he penetrates you but there’s no sound coming out of your lips. He mutters praises for you and bends over to kiss you again. Your tongues intertwine as he’s deep inside of you, burying himself inside and getting out again and again until you’re panting looking for that ecstatic pleasure.
You cover his moans with a deep kiss once he reaches his orgasm and you hold him there. Breathing the scent of the surroundings, your sweat and his combined, you stay there until you’re calm, relaxed, and exhausted in the sweetest way.
“Thank you for not letting me change my shift” you say after a few minutes

(光与夜之恋 Light and Night) Event! 海街/昨日寄: Sent yesterday on Sea Street Translation (Chapter 5)
“I wish to share the belief that magic does exist to everyone, even if just for a second!”
*Light and Night Master-list *Spoiler free: Translations will remain under cut *Join the Light & Night Discord (^▽^)~ ♪ *Event story tag will be #For Light and Memories
The lights lit up as Jesse made his grand entrance with the curious eyes of the audience on him.
Tumblr media
Jesse: Good evening, students! I have a question for everyone before the movie starts! Do you believe that magic exists in this world?
Jesse: That student over there who's shaking their head! Keep your eyes peeled for what comes next! You never know, it might just change your thoughts about magic!
Hearing how vividly charming his voice was made me mentally sigh at how he was truly born to be an actor; able to gain everyone's attention just by saying a few lines.
Meanwhile, I took advantage of this moment to infiltrate the crowd while pretending to be a server who distributed drinks to everyone...
The excitement in the venue rapidly rose as the magic show opened its curtains.
Jesse stood behind a table. He held up a plastic back that looked as normal as they came.
He showed everyone the empty interior of the plastic bag before rightening it back up and reaching his arm inside it.
Tumblr media
Jesse: Hm? Looks like there's something here…
The audience held their breath and stretched their necks out in curiosity, trying to peer at it. Under the scrutiny of a dozen or so pairs of eyes, he pulled out a beret from within!
Jesse: I accidentally picked up someone's hat. Can the owner of this beret come to claim it?
Student A: Ah! It's my hat!
Jesse: Here you go. It's a very pretty hat.
Jesse returned the beret to the student full of smiles. She incredulously gives her beret a once over. After ensuring that it was indeed her beret, she cries out in surprise.
Student A: Wow! Is this what they call "fetching things out of thin air"!?
The audience didn't dare believe their eyes after having witnessed that. They all broke out into hushed, yet excited, chattering. And just as they were all engrossed in all the excitement, I squashed the nervousness that was slowly rising in my heart as I reached out to grab a boy's folded parasol...
Actually, I'd secretly taken that girl's beret when Jesse had gone on stage.
I hid the item under the cloth of the serving tray and handed it to Jesse as I pretended to serve him a drink. And using the table as a cover, he took the item and stuffed it into his arms. The plastic bag he used had a large opening at the back, so all he had to do was to stick his arm inside it, and he'd be able to retrieve the item hidden in his arms with ease.
I hurriedly hid the parasol beneath the serving tray and headed to the stage.
I hadn't gotten far when a loud voice sounded from below the stage.
Boy: Huh? Where's my parasol gone to?
I froze.  Why did he choose now of all times to go looking for his parasol!?
The parasol within my grasp suddenly felt like a hot coal. I couldn't help but feel guilty about what I'd done, and my brain completely went blank.
Then, I saw Jesse put down his props, pick up his soda, and head straight towards me.
He pretended to place his empty soda back onto my tray while he sneakily took the parasol from me with lightning speed. He executed this with absolute smoothness. No one was alerted, no one was suspicious, and everyone was none the wiser. When taking the parasol from him, he even turned to the audience and said all so naturally:
Jesse: Have you lost something? Don't worry! We'll help you find it!
Having said that, he secretly winked at me. I know. He was telling me not to worry.
It felt as if his wink really had magic imbued into it, enough to settle my anxious heart.
I believe that no matter what happens, Jesse will definitely be able to turn the tables around.
Following that, Jesse walked up to the student who'd lost his parasol.
His beautifully long fingers manoeuvred through the air as he magicked out a parasol from the bag behind the student's back.
Jesse: Is this parasol yours?
The boy's eyes widened in both surprise and joy.
Boy: Huh? What's it doing in my bag!? I'm pretty sure it was at…
Just as the boy reached out to reclaim his parasol, Jesse withdrew his arm and moved it out of his reach.
Jesse: And that's not all.
He opened the parasol above the boy, releasing a shower of Countless starry deco glitter that rained down. It shimmered brighter than ever against the darkness of the night.
Tumblr media
Jesse: A starry night especially for this lucky student here.
The students broke out into applause.
Student B: Oh my god! How did he do that!?
Student C: How pretty! I want one too!
The excited students swarmed around Jesse.
Jesse then continued on to show them a couple more magic tricks, surprising them to no end. Time quietly flew past amidst the excitement.
It was only when the replacement power cable had been sent over, that Jesse painstakingly pried himself away from the students that surrounded him.
❖☆———————————★❖
Upon returning to the room, the mere thought of how thrilling the performance of pulling things out of thin air continues making my heart race.
MC: Your reaction time's way too fast, Jesse!
MC: Fortunately, you're capable of pulling off that many magic tricks. Everyone's eyes can't catch up with you!
Jesse: Now you're flattering me, Milady. They're only small tricks, nothing more.
Tumblr media
MC: Actually, I've been wanting to ask you this ever since we started prepping for the performance… But, when did you even start learning how to do magic?
Jesse: I don't remember. Probably when I was really young?
Jesse: I recall thinking that magicians really had magic back when I saw magic being performed on the screen for the first time.
Jesse: “Does magic really exist in this world?” This thought of mine has brought me a lot of happiness and hope.
Jesse: That’s why I wish to share the belief that magic does exist to everyone, even if just for a second!
MC: I believe you! I mean, didn’t we just do magic together?
MC: I now believe that magic exists in this world thanks to you!
He pauses for a while before his eyebrow lifts, a smile as bright as the sweat on his forehead appearing on his face.
Tumblr media
Jesse: ...I’m really happy. Thank you, (Y/n).
Music sounded from the courtyard. The movie was starting.
Jesse: C’mon! Now’s the time for the magic of light and shadows!
❖☆———————————★❖
Tumblr media
We settled ourselves onto the grassy grounds of the courtyard with chilled orange sodas in hand.
Gao Xuan had already prepared special seats for us. The two roses that Jesse had gifted me earlier in the day were now displayed within a flower vase decorating the table.
The projector screen before us slowly lit up, a picture of red and white roses appearing on the screen… It was the movie that Gao Xuan had been talking about, “The Roses”!
Fuelled by curiosity, I gradually immersed myself in the plot of the movie.
This movie was one where the male protagonist meets two beloved women. One, while in his adolescence, and the other, while in his adulthood. It was a story about his spiritual growth. The red and white roses each represented one of his two beloved ones respectively.
"White roses represent purity, as is my original intention; whilst red roses represent longing and temptation."
So, this line really DID come from this movie.
Near the end of the film, the male protagonist told her this: “Oh, how lucky I am to be what I am now.”
Just as I revelled in this line, I suddenly felt Jesse’s eyes on my face. His lips moved ever so faintly, the evening breeze bringing his low whisper across as it overlaps with the on-screen actor’s spoken line.
Tumblr media
Jesse: “...How lucky I am to be what I am right now.”
Those jewel-like emerald green eyes of his told of affection that words could never attempt to describe. My heart unwittingly sped up, yet I couldn’t help but be attracted by the light glimmering within his orbs.
It was now, that the red and white roses atop the table quietly bloomed in the inky black darkness of the night.
A silent summer night; the cries of unknown bugs in the background; the illumination of the light and shadows of the screen cast upon our features.
And reflected in our eyes; was each other.

-----
Hyunjin met you on the warmest day of August.
He could barely keep his eyes open, even hidden behind his square-shaped sunglasses, as he walked down the street, the scorching heat of the sun forcing him to take refuge in the closest 7/11 he managed to find on google maps.
The excessive air conditioning slapped his cheeks when the sliding doors opened. Even though he felt like his throat was already itching, warning him not to stay too long if he did not want to catch a cold, he was thankful to escape momentarily the living hell that was a summer in Jeju. Warm rays of sunlight were replaced by glitching neon lights. At this hour of the day, the convenience store was pretty much empty. The whole town must have been gathered at the beach. He could feel a bead of sweat dripping down his neck at the simple thought of all the bodies piled up on the sand. When he finally found the freezer, he grabbed a raspberry popsicle. It had always been his favorite for as long as he could remember.
At first, you did not notice him approaching the checkout, too immersed in the music blasting in your earphones. In fact, your music was so loud, Hyunjin was able to make out the bass. Indie rock, he assumed. An old fan was blowing lukewarm air in your messy hair. As you finished your umpteenth spin on your rusty stool, your eyes finally met his.
"Sorry. Did not see you there," you said, jumping up and taking off your earphones in a hurry, as if you were caught red-handed. Your boss must have forbidden you to listen to music on your shifts, he guessed. You stuffed the tangled cords deep in the pocket of your forest green sleeveless vest. Hyunjin couldn’t help but wonder how someone could look that good in this horrid uniform.
"It's okay," Hyunjin muttered but you did not seem to hear him as you were too busy taping on the cash register's screen. His cheeks felt hot all the sudden, but for once it was not from the heat of the sun.
"One fifty please". He proceeded to empty out his pockets, the golden coins landing on the counter with a loud noise. Without even glancing at him, you put them in the cash-drawer.
And as quickly as he came, Hyunjin was out the door, the burning air engulfing him again, sinking into every pore of his skin. But he could not bring himself to go home yet. Instead, he sat under the shade of the parasol installed in front of the convenience store’s window, glancing occasionally at you.
Unconsciously, a smile grew on his lips as he saw that you were already back to your antics, earphones in your ears, bopping your head to the sound of your playlist.
He did not realize how long he had been sitting here until he felt a sticky liquid running down his fingers. His popsicle had melted. “Fuck”, he muttered as he saw that his white vans were now tinted pink.
-----
You’d be lying if you said the stranger’s daily visits were not the only reason you looked forward to starting your shift at 6 in the morning while all your friends were still fast asleep after long nights of partying. He would come every day around 2, except on Sundays when the shop would be closed, to get his raspberry treat.
After a week, your exchanges still had not gotten further than the usual “hello”, “one fifty please”, “thanks” and “goodbye”. Not that you did not have the desire to, but because you have always been terrified of small talk. How you got hired despite your constant resting bitch face was an unsolved mystery.
On Thursday, he entered the 7/11 at exactly 2:13 PM and, as always, went straight to the freezer. You immediately turned up the volume of your music to silence your ridiculously intense heartbeat. Of course, you blamed it on your social anxiety. What more could it be?
While he was choosing his ice cream, you could not help but stare at his broad back. You noticed how strands of bleached hair escaped from his black bucket hat. How the collar of his Hawaiian shirt was slightly crooked, causing your fingers to ache to fix it. How the bottom of his jean shorts was getting a little bit more frayed each day. How his white vans were stained pink.
The sound of the freezer’s door slamming shut made you come back to your senses. You could not bring yourself to look at him in the eyes when he finally reached the checkout. Instead, the yellow color of the popsicle he slid onto the counter immediately caught your attention.
“Don’t we have any raspberry ones left?” you thought out loud. You only realized these words actually came out of your mouth when it you saw the boy’s eyes widen and his lips part in surprise. A wave of embarrassment hit you. He must have thought you were a crazy stalker, taking note of what he was buying every single day.
“Oh, no you got plenty left... I just wanted to try something new, I guess,” he said.
It was the first time you saw his true smile, not just the polite kind. It was shy at first, but then it bloomed across his flushed cheeks causing the skin of his nose to wrinkle and his eyes to turn into shining crescents. Never had you seen such a pretty vision. The type of vision that was making your heart ache. You wanted to answer him so badly, to keep the conversation going for hours. But no matter how hard you thought, nothing came to your mind.
"One fifty, please" were all the words you managed to say with your usual nonchalant tone. You fought the urge to slap yourself when you saw his smile slowly fading, a hint of disappointment crossing his face.
Not wanting this mortifying episode to last any longer, you quickly took his bill from his hands and gave him his change almost instantly. As soon as he disappeared behind the sliding doors, a loud sigh escaped your lips, resonating in the empty aisles. You let your head fall on the counter, your eyes already closing in an attempt to calm your nerves.
Why did you have to be so damn cold?
-----
Hyunjin’s vacations were about to come to an end, yet the heat was just as unbearable as when they started. Time had stopped. Days were endless, suffocating, empty. They blended together to create a vicious and infinite loop. The sun did not seem to be wanting to set and put an end to Hyunjin’s misery. It felt like a stifling drought interrupted his fast-paced life. Like scissors cut off his wings, violently bringing him back to the ground. No matter how hard he tried, he could not bring himself to enjoy his time off.
First of all, because it was not his choice. When the company announced a summertime hiatus for Stray Kids, it came as a surprise for everyone. It just did not feel right, not after their recent successes. But like many other decisions, it wasn’t in their power. They were sent home and forced to rest.
Mostly because he was supposed to join his parents on their trip to Jeju, but the universe decided otherwise. At the last minute, his grandmother broke her wrist by falling in the stairs and his father’s boss resigned. Nothing too alarming in itself, but his mother had to be by his grandmother’s bedside and his father had to take care of the tasks suddenly left uncompleted by his now former superior.
This is how Hyunjin, who was so used to be surrounded by seven brothers from another mother, ended up watching all the episodes of Hotel de Luna, twice, alone, in an empty beach house for two weeks straight. In the beginning, he found it kind of enjoyable. He spent the first few days sleeping-in, taking endless showers, eating snacks for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But slowly he started to miss waking up at dawn, racing to get in the shower first, fighting for the drumstick when they ordered chicken. Now it was almost unbearable. He hated the silence that he once longed for.
Of course, he thought about calling his friends and family on the phone. And he did at first, but as soon as he would hang up his loneliness would grow, multiply, swallow him whole. So, he had stopped. He also thought about going out and meeting new people. But he got so used to always having his members by his side that he forgot about how you even make new ones. He felt like a fool, not even being able to do the usual tasks of a normal teenager.
The only interaction with another living being he had was with you. Each day, he was counting the hours until he would go buy a raspberry popsicle, especially if it meant that he would see your face. Admittedly, you did not seem as excited to see his. You weren’t cheerful nor loquacious. Your whole body screamed “go away” but he still felt drawn to you. Maybe it was the way you’d mimic the drums with your fingers when you were absorbed by your music. Or how pretty you looked in that green uniform. Or the fact that you remembered raspberry was his favorite flavor.
That day, he decided loneliness had become too heavy of a burden for him. He wasn’t really realizing what he was doing when he grabbed a second popsicle out of the freezer. Afraid that he might chicken out if he thought about it too long, he walked so fast to the checkout that he almost bumped in the pile of baskets sitting next to your stool. He felt a slight relief when he saw that you noticed his purchase was different than the usual by the way you had furrowed your brows.
“Hey. This one is for you”, he said, sliding the bright pink wrapper across the counter.
Instead of reaching for the treat, your fingers started to play with the cord of your earphones. For once, you looked at him straight in the eyes. Normally you would be too focused on your cash register's screen to pay attention to him. As his confidence was melting under your gaze like an ice cream under the sun, he wondered if he actually didn’t like it better when you didn’t stare at him. Your expression was unreadable, at least for him. He had never been good at those type of things anyways.
“It must be hard to work during vacations” he added with a voice that seemed to be about to crack. He could not help but scratch the back of his head in an attempt to fight back his embarrassment.
He swore he caught a glimpse of the corners of your mouth slightly curl up, betraying your regular nonchalance. “Thanks” you responded with your usual tone, as you grabbed the popsicle, but the ghost of a smile was still lingering on your face. “3 dollars please”. He gave you the exact amount and was already on his way to the exit.
He felt a bit disappointed by your reaction but what was he even expecting? As he was trying to convince himself to be content with just seeing your smile, as discreet as it was, he heard your voice, piercing through the noise of the neon lights and refrigerators buzzing.
“Wait. I have my break in 10 minutes… Can you wait for me? We can eat it outside”. Was he hallucinating or did you actually asked him to eat together? He had to check your face several times to make sure he had not gotten crazy. Considering the way you were staring at him with your eyebrow arched, he figured he wasn’t dreaming and you were impatiently waiting for his answer. “I have to go get some fresh air anyways”, you added, trying to fill the uncomfortable silence.
“Sure”, he finally said, doing his best to keep his cool but he knew too well that his face had turned crimson red.
“I gotta put the popsicles back into the freezer otherwise it will be melted by then”. Your fingers reached for his. He noticed how small your hand seemed next to his, how the black polish on your nails was chipped, how cold your skin felt against his.
Once he was sure you were holding the popsicles, he sprinted out of the convenience-store. It was only when he got outside that he realized he had been holding his breath all this time.
-----
The next 10 minutes felt like a real ordeal. Not even the last album of the Strokes blasting in your earphones could distract you from the fact that the cutest boy you had ever seen was sitting on the sidewalk waiting for you, right in the middle of your field of vision.
You decided to swivel your stool towards the old clock instead. Seven minutes left before you could take your break. Your foot was tapping frantically on the white tiles. You were not sure if you wanted the minute hand to reach the 6 already or to stop right here in its track. Get this over with already or never have to talk to the boy again.
No matter how hard you tried to ignore his presence, you just could not. Maybe if the small TV mounted on the wall had been playing something a little bit more interesting than ads for beers and tampons you would have been able to, but sadly it was not the case.
You finally caved in, your gaze going back to him. Once again, you couldn’t help but stare at his shoulders. Unfortunately, he ended up turning around, catching you ogling. “Shit” you whispered under your breath, mortified.
That was it, you thought. Even though there were still 2 more minutes left on the clock, you couldn’t stay here anymore. Otherwise you would have probably died of embarrassment by the time would be up.
You went to find the two popsicles you had put back into the freezer. You also decided to grab two cokes on your way out. You let out a loud breath, unsuccessfully trying to release the tension that had built up in your chest, before the sliding doors opened.
“Here” you said, holding out the popsicle and the drink to the boy. He grabbed it with a small “thank you” and a soft smile. The concrete burned the back of your thighs, left exposed by your worn-out denim shorts, when you sat by his side. The bright blue of the sky hurt your pupils. There wasn’t a single cloud on the horizon.
“I forgot how hot it was outside” you finally said. And you really meant it. It felt like you just went from a fridge to a 390 degrees oven.
“You work all day?” he asked, his face turning to yours. You noticed that he was already halfway through his coke. He must have been so thirsty. You felt bad for making him wait under the sun.
You nodded, as you took a sip of the beverage. “From 6 to 9. I start and finish my shift when the weather is still bearable” you explained.
You looked at your bare arms that were already heating up. They did not see the sun more than a few times this summer. You must have looked ill compared to the tanned vacationers. “I did not put sunscreen on” you said, thinking about how your mom used to nag you when you were young when you would stay under the sun for too long.
“You should probably go sit under the shade”, he suggested, his head turning to the plastic chair the convenience store had provided.
As you sat in it, you could not help but wonder if he purposely saved the place for you. It was positioned in such a way that you couldn’t clearly see the boy’s face, only his back and a bit of his profile. And what a profile. Chiseled jaw, delicate nose, pouty lips, pierced ears. You found yourself enjoying the view way more than you should have been. There was something so pleasant about being able to take a closer look at someone without being scrutinized back. But the lovely vision was disturbed by the beads of sweat that were forming at your eyebrows. You wiped it off quickly with the back of your hand.
“I fucking hate summer breaks” you sighed. The words came out harsher than you expected as you tore the fuchsia wrapper that protected the popsicle.
“Could not agree more” he said, between two licks. The way he was eating his popsicle was just sinful, you thought.
“Really? That’s an unpopular opinion though.”
“I guess I’m not used to breaks,” he shrugged.
“What do you do?” His answer had spiked your curiosity. He looked fairly young, around the same age as you. You wondered what kind of occupation would take up so much time of his life. Worker at a factory? Top athlete? Freelancer?
Oddly enough, he took a few seconds to answer as if he was not sure himself. “I’m a hip-hop dancer” he finally said, turning around to see your reaction.
“No offense but that sounds like an all year long vacation to me” you teased him.
A laugh escaped his pink lips. Ringing and honest. It was music to your ears. “It’s really not, trust me. What about you?”.
“I’m a college student. I’m majoring in macroeconomics”. His once innocent smile turn into a teasing one. You rolled your eyes but the corners of your lips, already curling up, betrayed you. “I know. Sounds boring. It’s boring actually”.
“I always wondered what the usual college student day looks like”.
“Wake up. Eat. Drink. Party. Sleep. Repeat. Oh, and sometimes go to class,” you counted on your fingers.
“TV shows are not lying then?” he asked, cocking his brow.
“They are. They make it seem fun when in reality it’s just the same stupid people doing the same stupid shit every single day. It gets exhausting really quickly... Oh and don’t get me started on hangovers, they make you regret going everytime.” You stopped your rant there and went back to eating your popsicle, afraid that you might have made him uneasy.
But it didn’t seem like it. Instead, he looked pensive, almost sad. “I wish I could live like that sometimes...”
“What’s keeping you from partying right now? You’re here with you parents?” Vacations were the perfect time to get wasted so it was surprising he did not seize the opportunity to do so, like all the other teens in town.
“I was supposed to, but something came up last minute. So, I’m all by myself. I don’t know anybody here,” he admitted. Although he turned his head to the other side, hiding his face from you, you could sense a bit of embarrassment in his voice.
You both fell silent, acting like you were too busy eating your popsicles to talk. You didn’t know when you decided to speak up. You couldn’t even remember what your train of thought was. But here you were, about to say a sentence you had never thought you would be saying to stranger one day.
“Hey, I’m meeting with my friends tonight. Do you wanna come?” The heat had probably melted your brain, you thought. There was no way you would have uttered those words if you had been in your right mind. You held your breath, waiting for his answer.
His eyes immediately went back to yours, lighting up with expectancy. “Will they be okay with it?”
“I think so. They always bring a plus one last minute without warning me. So that will be my revenge” you laughed, trying to conceal the nervousness that was growing in your stomach as you were realizing the implications of your offer.
“You sure?”
An old man was coming your way, a large shopping bag on his shoulders. A curse escaped your lips as you checked your phone. It was way past your break time. “If you insist, I’ll call them to ask. I gotta go.” As the client entered the shop, you quickly got up and threw the popsicle stick in the closest bin, along with the wrapper “I don’t get why you’re so obsessed with this popsicle, it’s really not that good”, you muttered on your way to the entrance.
“Wait. Where do we meet up tonight?” he stuttered as he sprung to his feet.
“Be there by 9” you yelled before disappearing being the sliding doors.
-----
When the client left, his basket full of oranges and peaches, you decided to call your friend as promised. You reluctantly pressed Minju’s contact picture. In order to have your hands free and be able to refill the aisles with ramen packets, you stuck your phone between your ear and shoulder. You regretted it immediately when she picked up the phone, her loud voice hurting your eardrum.
“You better not be calling me to cancel tonight’s plans.” You’d be lying if you said that the absence of any kind of greetings came as a surprise. Her answer was easily explainable by the fact that your phone calls were rarely auspicious since you despised calling and only did it instead of texting when you had something to apologize for.
“Yeah, about that… Just wanted to warn you, I’m bringing a friend tonight”. You could not help but wince at your own words, already predicting her answer.
“You have other friends than us?” She asked in her famous mocking tone, making you regret instantly your prior boldness. It was so unlike you to invite a total stranger and Minju knew it too well.
“I met him recently, he comes to the shop everyday”, you tried to explain.
“He? A boy?” She gasped and your mind could clearly imagine her shocked face as if she was standing right in front of you, hands on the cheeks and mouth agape. You’re pretty sure your eyes rolled all the way back to your head.
Your friend must have guessed it because you could hear her repressing a giggle. “Okay, okay” She said, regaining her composure. “What’s the lucky man’s name?” she allowed herself to ask. A sudden realization hit you.
You did not even know his name.
-----
As Hyunjin walked down the same street, his pace faster than usual, he felt his heartbeat increase and his hands getting clammy. The sun had not set yet, but the sky’s color had changed, shades of pink and oranges replacing the garish blue. A fresh breeze was tickling his nose and caressing his cheeks. The linen shirt he wore would probably come handy by the end of the night, when the air would have completely cooled off but for now, the tension in his body was making him sweat profusely. He felt like a frightened teenager going to his first party. Which, to be honest, was not that far from the truth.
When he entered the shop, you were running everywhere, apologizing for being late. He offered his help to close the shop, which you accepted but only after he insisted. Fifteen minutes later, as you were finally about to lower the shutters and leave, you stopped dead in your tracks.
“We can’t come empty handed”, you muttered to yourself. You went back into the 7/11 and grabbed a pack of beers and a bottle of coke from the fridge, as well as a pack of cigarettes and a bottle of vodka behind the counter. The night promised to be eventful and Hyunjin could not help but feel slightly excited as if he was about to break the rules. And in fact, he was probably going to break his company’s rules tonight.
Even at this hour, the subway was packed by teenagers going out for the night and businessmen coming home late to their family. It forced the both of you to stay quiet, the chatters and the rails’s screeching making you unable to hear each other anyways.
Hyunjin caught a glimpse of your reflection in the window. You looked tired, staring into space, as you were holding the heavy bottles. He could sense that you definitely weren’t as excited as him to go out. Your body was slouching against the metal door, as if you carried the weight of the world on your shoulder.
At each station, you would mindlessly move aside to let people get on and off. He could not help but stare at your features that had seemed to age in a matter of hours. You looked jaded, as if you already saw everything that life had to offer you and that it did not live up to your expectations.
Hyunjin couldn’t help but wonder if you regretted inviting him. He unsuccessfully tried to ease his mind by convincing himself it was probably the long day of work you had behind you and not his presence that was making this apathetic.
Moments later, you were already at the host’s door, pushing on the intercom’s button reluctantly. The person that picked up did not even care to ask you who you were before allowing you in.
Hyunjin was surprised there wasn’t any beer pong table or bowl of punch. No expensive mansion, no pool filled with girls in bikinis, no flashing lights, no blasting electro music. Only about twenty tipsy teenagers gathered around the couch and the dining table, sipping on cheap drinks and sharing cigarettes, listening to commercial music. It looked nothing like the movies but at least Hyunjin felt a little bit less nervous in this familiar setting.
-----
You could not bother to go around the room and say hi to everybody. Firstly, because you didn’t know at least half of the persons there and did not care to meet them. Mostly, because you spent the last month ghosting the people you did know and did not want to confront them. Instead, you went straight to the wooden dining table, barely visible under all the unhealthy snacks and beverages, where Minju was seated.
“Here comes Y/N, guys”, she yelled as if you were the literal messiah, but thankfully nobody was listening, too busy getting wasted. When her eyes went from you to your guest, they doubled in size.
“So, this is the guy you were hiding all this time”, she teased, and you could see the boy’s ears turning bright red, even in this dim lighting.
“I’m Minju,” she said, holding out her hand for him to shake.
“Hyunjin” he responded with a shy smile as their palms met. Even though you wanted to strangle her for embarrassing you in front of everybody, you had to admit her antics were useful for once, since it allowed you to finally learn the stranger’s name. And what a name. You found yourself repeating it in your head again and again and again… It fit his features perfectly: soft and dreamy.
You had to snap out of it, you thought. All these feelings were so out of character.  “I need a shot. Want one?” You asked Hyunjin. Before he could even answer, you were already grabbing the bottle of vodka and hastily pouring the liquor in two small glasses.
“Sure” he said as he reached for the alcohol. You clinked your glasses, looking straight into each other eyes, before downing the bitter liquid in one shot. His face contorted dramatically as soon as his lips touched the vodka, making you chuckle.
The lighthearted moment did not last long since you saw Jiwon coming in your direction. You had met him at you first Halloween college party. He was your typical frat boy, friendly and noisy, but mostly silly. To your surprise, he had taken interest in you and made his mission to transform you into an extrovert by the end of the year, which, by the way, did not happen and was not about to happen anytime soon. His intentions weren’t bad but his constant nagging about socializing only made you drift further away. And tonight, you definitely weren’t going to put up with his bullshit. When he reached the table, you avoided his gaze by reaching for the bottle once again.
“I might need another one” you muttered under your breath as you quickly poured yourself a second drink, swallowing it in a matter of second, your throat burning and chest warming up.
“Y/N! It’s been a while. Where have you been?” Jiwon asked you, putting his arm around your shoulders.
“Working” you replied curtly. The boy just laughed at your boorish behavior, used to it by now, and playfully shook your shoulder.
“We’re gonna play ‘never have I ever’. Wanna join?” he asked at your intention but also at Hyunjin’s.
“I’ll pass”, you immediately responded, not in the mood for revealing all your dirty little secrets to strangers. When were you ever in the mood, anyway?
“If you didn’t already know Hyunjin, Y/N is the definition of a party pooper”, Minju slurred as if her mouth was full of marbles. You could already predict the fact that you’ll probably spend the end of your night holding your friend’s hair while she pukes in the toilets. “But I’m sure you’re much more fun than her”.
“It’s really not that hard.” Jiwon added, a teasing smile dancing on his lips.
Hyunjin looked at you as if he was asking your permission to participate in the drinking game. You suddenly felt guilty, realizing you were probably ruining his night by acting so sour. You nodded for him to go and not to worry about you. He smiled back at you as Minju was already grabbing him by the arm to drag him to the living room. He found a seat on the rug, between two pretty girls whose names and faces you couldn’t remember.
After hesitating between staying at the dining table, moping around and binging on sour cream and onion chips, or moving closer to the group of players, you decided to come and seat on the armrest of the sofa to observe the game. Hyunjin’s nervousness seemed to lessen a bit when he saw that you were now just in front of him, only separated by the coffee table filled with glasses, and you could not help but find it adorable. His eyes left yours to find Jiwon’s as he handed him a dark green bottle of beer.
“Okay so here is the twist. We’re gonna play the other way around. I say something I have done and people who never did it must drink. That way goody two-shoes get drunk for once. I’m sure the others don’t need help to get drunk anyways”, the girl on the right of Hyunjin explained and the partygoers approved loudly.
“I’ll start slow. I have had a blackout before” she said, a smile creeping up on her mouth. Hyunjin looked around as if he was waiting for some type of signal. When he saw a few other people drinking, he took a sip of his beer.
As expected, a guy was already bickering with his friend about whether or not he could really remember the time he danced naked on the kitchen counter on New Year’s Eve. With each statement, the players became more and more tipsy, more and more loud. It would usually get on your nerves and you would go take refuge in the bathroom to ease your growing headache, but surprisingly you did not mind the noise.
Probably because all you could pay attention to at the moment was the boy in front of you. You could not help but secretly watch his every move. You hoped nobody noticed you were staring. So far, he had drunk at almost every round. Thankfully it was just beer and not another strong liquor, otherwise he would have been too far gone to even be able to get up on his feet by now.
Your mind started wandering. It was filled with questions only him could answer but that you will probably never ask. You wondered what his life was like. You had never seen someone drink this much during a “never have I ever”. Certainly because people who knew they would be drinking this much usually abstained from participating. But Hyunjin looked like he was having the time of his life losing every single round.
How come someone like him had so little experience? He did not seem like the party animal type, so you weren’t surprised when he took large gulps when a girl said she had thrown up on a friend before and when a guy stated he once fell flat on his face because of how pissed out drunk he was. But how come he never had a long-term relationship nor a one-night stand? How come he never had to hide a hickey? How come he never broke up with someone? How come he never made out in public? To say the boy was a mystery to you would have been an understatement.
His actions were getting clumsier, his laugh getting louder, his lids getting heavier, his cheeks getting redder, yet you were mesmerized. The usual aversion you’d feel towards inebriated teens had magically vanished at his captivating sight. How could someone look this beautiful, even with their guard down?
As he finished his third bottle of beer, the blonde girl on his left was already opening him another one with her lighter. You could barely hear what he was saying to her above the music and the screams, but you sensed that the alcohol was starting to become a bit too much for him as she forced the drink in his reluctant hands.
“I’ll replace Hyunjin” you said, leaping up instantly to everyone’s surprise including Hyunjin’s. He stared at you with big eyes and you suddenly felt dumb, standing here while everybody was slumped on the Persian rug.
“Here comes your knight in shining armor, Hyunjin,” Jiwon said, breaking the awkward silence by laughing loudly as if it was the highlight of his night.
“Are you scared your boyfriend is gonna get out of control, Y/N?”  the blonde asked, a smirk dancing on her bright red lips. Hearing your name in her mouth came as a surprise to you since you were pretty sure you had never seen her before. But it’s not like you paid attention to drunk girls at parties. You let out a forced laugh as you got around the coffee table, trying not to crush fingers or knock over red solo cups.
“I’m just way too sober for this shitty party”, you said while you finally managed to plop down gracelessly between Hyunjin and the blonde. You addressed her your biggest, brightest, sardonic smile before you snatched the bottle she was trying so hard to give to the boy from her.
You tried to avoid Hyunjin’s gaze by staring at the round stains left on the wooden table by previous glasses, as if it was the most interesting thing you ever saw. But it was impossible to ignore his presence when your bare shoulder was flushed against his. You suddenly became so aware of how cold your skin was compared to his. You felt your heart beat in your biceps. You secretly damned the vintage muscle tee he was wearing. You would probably have found it ugly on anybody else but, oh god, did it look good on him.
You finally dared to take a look at his face, only to meet his dark hooded eyes. He was looking straight into your soul, making you feel naked, stripped down from your armor. It seemed like any kind of shyness had left him as alcohol had infiltrated his body. You could have sworn he was gradually leaning forward, getting closer to your face inch by inch, second by second. As he suddenly lost his balance, you moved just in time to avoid his head, which ended up bumping against shoulder.
“Woah, sorry” he giggled while he grabbed onto your forearm for additional support. His fingertips were burning your skin, his smile was frying bour brain.
You could see Minju smirking out of the corner of your eyes, making you instantly get a hold on yourself. There was no way you would give your friend the satisfaction of seeing you flustered because of a boy.
“My turn,” you said, after clearing your throat. “I have gone skinny dipping before.”
-----
Hyunjin could not tell how much time had passed until he finally realized you had disappeared when he felt like he was on fire. Your coldness was gone and the little voice inside his head was urging him to go find it again.
He got up, his legs wobbly as if he was walking with high heels on quicksands, and wandered down the corridor. The alcohol had his head buzzing. He could not trust his senses anymore, his eyes were playing games, twisting and blurring his surroundings. Thankfully, there were no countless doors leading to dark rooms filled with strangers making out. Just your usual messy bedrooms and small bathroom, making it a lot easier to find you.
When he turned the silver knob of the second door, he was immediately warned by the scent of burnt tobacco. He could make out your figure, standing on the small balcony. Your features were lit by the moonlight. The smoke coming from your cigarette was creating shadows on your face and the fresh wind was blowing in your untamed baby hair. For the first time you looked soft, almost fragile.
You only seemed to notice his presence when he tripped on the windowsill, making a blaring noise that echoed into the empty street. Even though he was drunk, he could still see you were repressing a laugh.
“You look like you’re having fun” you said, backing onto the balustrade and crossing your arms over your chest, your halfway smoked cigarette stuck between your index and middle fingers.
“Yeah. Thanks for bringing me” he responded, climbing onto the bar of the balustrade like a kid would do to be able to look outside despite his small height. He did not know he had vertigo until he looked down the 5 stories. You grabbed him by the arm, pulling him back to the ground as his head was spinning.
He stole your cigarette and brought it to his lips to take a drag. He immediately regretted his decision when the smoke burnt his esophagus, making him almost choke. He gave it back to you with a sheepish smile. But you seemed amused by his childish antics.
“My friends seem to like you a lot”, you said, ignoring his embarrassing attempt at acting like a bad boy. “I’d say even more than they like me”.
“No, they don’t” he snorted.
“Yes, they do” you chuckled. You took a long drag of your cigarette as you turned around to look at the moon. A cloud of smoke escaped your lips and nostrils, tingling Hyunjin’s unaccustomed nose. “But don’t worry. That was the reaction I was hoping for when I invited you.”
Hyunjin’s eyebrows furrowed. He could not quite comprehend what you were meaning by that and the alcohol flowing through his veins was probably not helping.
“I knew they would pay attention to you and not me. It’s a win-win situation. You’re having a great time and they’re leaving me in peace for once. I don’t think I would have been able to put up with another ‘why are you so quiet’ or ‘smile a little more’ comment”, you explained, addressing him a small smile. He noticed you were trying hard to hide a certain form a sadness, but it shone through your steel mask anyways. He could see it in the way your eyes would linger for too long on the accumulated ashes and your breath would shake.
“You really hate them, huh?” He realized his question was gauche a second too late. A silence settled in between the two of you, only disrupted by the sound of the wind blowing in the trees. The moon was almost full and there was no cloud in the navy sky to soften the light it shone on you.
“I don’t hate them. I hate the way they make me feel”, you finally admitted as if you were dying to say those words out loud for so long.
“How do they make you feel?” Hyunjin inquired hesitantly.
“Like I’m out of place” you said. “Have you ever felt lonely in a room full of people? I feel that way each time I show up to those parties. That is why I stopped coming. The worst thing is my friends try so hard to make me feel like I belong here, to the point that it becomes annoying. They keep on inviting me and dragging me everywhere they go. Yet, it doesn’t work.” You sighed heavily and flicked the ash at the tip of your cigarette. “The problem is not them. It’s me”, you muttered to yourself, but Hyunjin could hear the pain in your voice.
“And how do I make you feel?” He dared to ask, preparing himself to have his feelings hurt.
“Honestly? Jealous. I wonder how you do… this,” you said, waving your hand in his face.
“What is “this”?” he giggled.
“Being so charming.” You looked at your shoes, your cheeks flushing red as if complimenting him was the most embarrassing thing you had ever done. He could not help but find your behavior endearing. A teasing smile was painted on Hyunjin’s face, making you roll your eyes. He bumped your shoulder with his to get a laugh from you. He felt relieved to see you finally smile.
“You’re gonna probably roll your eyes at what I’m gonna say but there aren’t only good sides to being well-liked” he started hesitantly.
Your reaction pushed him to continue. It looked like he had all your attention, like you were genuinely interested in knowing how he felt. It had always been hard for him to talk about it, even with his members since he didn’t want to be an additional burden. But he found a sense of comfort in telling an almost total stranger. If truth be told, he felt like he could tell you everything at this exact moment.
“I’m always wondering if the person they like is the real me or the front I’m trying to put up every single day. I’m scared they’ll find out who I really am and get bored of me. Or even worst, disgusted by me”. He was so used to hiding every single one of his flaws. A perfect man, that is what he was always asked to be. Perfect skin, perfect hair, perfect outfit, perfect personality, perfect performance. He was taught the smallest misdemeanor would lead not only to his downfall, but his friends’ too. What a heavy burden to carry when you’re still just a lost and confused teenager. “I feel like an impostor.” His members probably felt the same way sometimes, but it was obsessing him. He couldn’t count the number of nights he stayed awake wondering if he really earned his place by working himself into the ground or if was just lucky to be born with a pretty face.
“Then who’s the real you?” you asked quietly. Your eyes were shining in the dark, your long lashes surrounding them like the petals of two rare flowers. He felt like he could dive into them, get lost in the abyss and never come back up to the surface, as if he would find the answer to your question there. For a minute, it seemed like he forgot how to breathe, how to think. He finally came back to his senses when you stubbed out your cigarette, breaking the entrancing contact between the two of you.
“An insecure and sensitive drama queen”, he said with a fake solemn tone like a spy revealing his real identity.
“I would love to get to know her somedays” you joked, grinning from ear to ear. How badly he wanted to pinch your pink cheeks right now, to squeeze you so tight you’d pop in his arms.
“How about tonight?”
You spent the next few hours on the small balcony discussing your everyday lives, sharing your guiltiest pleasures, revealing your darkest secrets, keeping each other warm by huddling up. He discovered you were polar opposites. You despised coffee while he would kill for a good iced Americano. Hyunjin enjoyed listening to hip-hop, you preferred rock. You liked old black and white movies while he’d never say no to go see the new marvel one in theaters. He’d always pick sweet raspberry over any other flavor, but you’d choose bitter lemon. You strived at night, when no one was watching, whereas he lived under the constant spotlight, scrutinized by strangers. He felt like the sun and you looked like the moon. He was the summer, warm and welcoming, and you were the winter, cold and impenetrable. You were so far away from each other, worlds apart. Yet, never had he felt this close to someone before. In your presence, he felt at home.
The creaking sound of the door opening interrupted your conversation. “Guys, Yerin is kicking everybody out” Jiwon said. Minju, trying hard to keep her eyes open but loosing miserably against the alcohol and the sleepiness, was gripping the boy’s shoulder tightly, using him as a crutch.
“What time is it?” you asked, getting back inside the bedroom. Hyunjin followed reluctantly. Never had he hated someone more than Jiwon right now for putting an end to such a magical moment. He had to fight the urge to scream at the intruders to go away and leave the two of you alone. But it was too late, the atmosphere had already shifted, and you were back to the usual detached attitude you displayed in public.
“It’s already 3 am. I’m taking Minju back to her place” he answered. You thanked him, obviously relieved not to be the one in charge of taking care of your drunk best friend.
When your group arrived in the living room, Hyunjin saw a girl who was trying to clean up the mess the guests made. He would have offered his help if he had not seen that you were already out of the door, waiting for him. Jiwon and Minju left immediately in a yellow cab that was waiting for them.
Once again, you and Hyunjin were alone, surrounded by the silence of the dark night.
“I don’t wanna go home yet”, he whispered to himself, as he watched the few stars the polluted air of the city allowed him to see, his back pressed against the concrete wall of the building.
“Me neither”, you admitted. His heart jumped in his chest at the thought that you wanted to spend more time with him. His eyes dared to find yours. They were sparkling in excitement. A few hours ago, never he would have hoped to see you react in such a way. Only him seemed to be allowed to see this facet of yours. You made him feel so special.
“Let’s go somewhere else” he said.
“Where?”
That was a good question. Where do teenagers go in the middle of the night if it isn’t to a house party? “I’ve never been to a club before”, he suggested after racking his still foggy brain.
“Let’s make this night a night of firsts then”. Your cold fingers intertwined with his, sending shivers down his spine, as you dragged him in the alley lit by rusty streetlamps.
The night was young and so were the both of you.
-----
You couldn’t fathom how the fuck you ended up in a dingy night club at 3:30 AM, the place you despised the most on earth, right after public toilets and hospitals. Yesterday, a check to your name with at least two zeros would have been necessary to convince you to join the wasted partiers. Today, a sweet smile and a couple more shots of vodka had been more than enough. The effect the boy you met just a few weeks ago had on you was much more important than you would have liked to admit. How far were you capable to go for him if he asked you to? There was something scary about this intense sentiment you never felt before.
Hyunjin had you dancing in the middle of a crowd of total strangers as if nobody was watching. You, the person who was self-aware of every single one of her moves, constantly imagining how she looked in the eyes of the people surrounding her. For the first time, you let yourself truly exhale. You didn’t realize how long you had been holding your breath for.
Your intoxicated blood was pumping in your veins to the rhythm of the music blasting in your ears. Your limbs were moving as they wished, as if they had a mind of their own. The ground, sticky after all the drinks that were spilled on it, seemed to be rippling under your feet. Your whole world was tilting to the right, and then to the left, like a seesaw. Each flash of light felt like an additional shot of adrenaline. Your head was spinning and your vision getting hazier by the minute, making your eyes unable to distinguish the mass of sweaty bodies in the dark. But no matter how dizzy you were, you could still see him clearly.
Like Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, Hyunjin shone. In a tide of people, you only had eyes for him. His body was moving in the most entrancing way, swinging so effortlessly to the beat of early 2010 hits. You couldn’t help but stare at his glistening neck, his collar bones left uncovered by his white muscle tee, his defined biceps, his swaying hips. Every inch of him seemed to be the work of Apollon.
You knew people were admiring him but you did not care. How could you be mad at them for taking a glimpse of such a beautiful sight? Especially when his eyes were never leaving yours, making you wonder what you did in your past life to deserve even a second of his attention.
You did not know how many hours went by, watching him recreating the most ridiculous dance steps he could remember to make you giggle and listening to him butchering your favorite childhood songs. At some point, you joined him. You screamed at the top of your lungs approximative lyrics that faded into uncontrollable bursts of laugher as he would catch you in his arms, make you twirl around and lift you in the air.
As people were slowly leaving the club, you were coming down from your high. Hyunjin was holding you tighter and tighter, your chest crushed against his, not even an inch separating your bodies, as if he was scared you might vanish if he loosened up his embrace even just a little. You never were the affectionate type, too afraid getting closer to someone would only scare them away. Because this is how you’d normally react yourself. The proximity was terrifying, the intimacy even more. But being in Hyunjin’s arms just felt so right at this moment.
Suddenly, the music seemed to come from another room, so far away, muffled as if your head was underwater. You dared to remove your face from the crook of his neck. You were relieved when you saw his face. Relieved this was not just a dream, this was your present. You were both gasping for air, inhaling and exhaling at the same tempo.
Your fingertips found his right cheek, then grazed his cupid’s bow and finally touched his lower lip. They felt too rough against his plump mouth. No matter how hard you’d try, you would never be gentle enough for such delicate features, for such a pure soul, you thought. You would ruin him, destroy him, tear his heart apart. But then his hand wrapped around yours. He made you press your palm against his burning skin.
His deep brown eyes were screaming ‘You’re enough’. And for once you believed it.
-----
“There is one more thing I want to do tonight” Hyunjin told you.
The fresh breeze had replaced the smell of sweat and alcohol and all kinds of filthy things, as you exited the night club. The dew was already glistening on the blades of grass of the neighboring lawns, like thousands of diamonds. The dark sky, blurred by the morning mist, was just starting to lighten, turning shades of lilac and mauve. The sunrise would be soon, but the streetlights were still on, leading the way. The teenagers that were kicked out of the club looked lost and disoriented as if they had just regained consciousness after an endless dream, stumbling in the city streets at 6 in the morning on a Sunday.
Your makeup was smudged under your eyes, accentuating the dark shadows due to the lack of sleep. Your hair was a mess and your cheekbones red. Yet, the way you were looking at him, eyes sparkling with curiosity, made you look adorable.
“Which way is the ocean?” he asked you.
You cocked your eyebrow in confusion but pointed your thumb to your right anyways, giving up on guessing what he had in mind. He grabbed your hand, his fingers naturally intertwining with yours, and started to run in the direction you indicated, slaloming between the hangover teens.
Not once had he gone to see the ocean since he had arrived here. The loneliness had paralyzed him all this time. But now that you were by his sides, he had the strong urge to feel the sea spray on his face, the sand between his toes. To feel alive after all these days of numbness. And share this feeling with you.
He had to drag you for a few meters before you finally picked up the pace. The further you got away from the night club, the more the streets were deserted, the only living presences you encountered at this hour being stray cats searching for something to eat in the dumpsters.
“Wait” you faintly protested as you were already gasping for air after a few minutes of running.
“We have to hurry before the sun comes up” he told you, holding your hand a little tighter to give you some courage.
-----
When your Doc Martens finally sunk in the humid sand, your lungs were on fire and your heart was about to burst out of your ribcage. The slender boy did not let you catch your breath though. As you were bent in two, hands resting on your weakened knees and chest heaving, you saw Hyunjin taking off his shirt and his muscle tee out of the corner of your eye.
Taken aback by his sudden boldness, you stood back up abruptly. The way Hyunjin smirked at you made you realize you were staring a bit too obviously at his defined torso. You felt your face becoming even hotter when he pulled down his jean shorts. Once he threw his beat-up converse in the sand, only his blue boxers were left. Never in your life a boy’s behavior had made you this flustered.
As your brain was trying to register what was happening, your started to stutter foolishly. But Hyunjin did not leave you the time to ask what the hell he was doing, already sprinting to the ocean. In an instant, the crashing waves swallowed him whole. You tried to catch a glimpse of him, but the foam formed by the sea’s eddies were making it impossible for you to distinguish his figure.
You did not know what took over you, probably the same unknown feeling that pushed you to dance in a filthy club, but here you were undressing hastily on a deserted beach at dawn. You ignored the shivers that traveled down your spine and the goosebumps that were appearing on your legs as you took off your shorts. You kept your large t-shirt on, not brave enough to show your whole body to him. You knew your courage would falter if you took too long to enter the cold water, so you ran and dove, headfirst.
The water felt like liquid ice against your skin, wrapping every inch of you, hugging you dearly. Your whole body went numb. If it wasn’t your stinging cuticles that were raw from the constant biting of your nails, you would have forgotten you were even made out of flesh. Forgotten that your existence did not just consist of a tired soul floating around aimlessly in the limbo. At last, everything felt so serene and at peace.
Ever since you learned how to swim, you had always loved the ocean. The feeling it procured you was still unrivaled to this day. It was better than alcohol, better than drugs, better than sex. Underwater, everything would stop for a moment. Your heartbeat would start to slow down, to the point you weren’t sure you were still alive. Your eyes would cease to see, and your ears would cease to hear. The whole world would go quiet. Those minutes of nothingness were all you wished for. They left you craving for more. But as the years went by, the beach wasn’t the refuge it used to be anymore. It slowly became a place of deep insecurities and social obligations. You stopped going, always declining your friends’ invitations. Only now were you realizing how much you missed the ocean’s embrace.
When your lungs screamed in need of oxygen, you reluctantly swam back to the surface. The void the water left in your heart was immediately filled by Hyunjin’s smile.
“You’re crazy” you told him between two waves, your hands flailing around to keep your head over the troubled water. He beamed at you and you thought you could die happy right now, with the picture of his radiant face in mind.
You both let yourselves float on your backs, the water gently rocking you. The sun was peeking shyly on the horizon, like the flame of an old lighter, gradually turning the shades of blue and mauve into hues of orange and pink. You noticed the faint shadow of the moon, not wanting to leave just yet. Ribbons of golden clouds were now decorating the pale sky. The sea was no longer an abyss of dark blue, but now an infinite expanse of liquid gold, as the sun rays were dancing over its surface.
You were overwhelmed by such beauty, on the verge of tears. You weren’t sure if you had actually started crying or if your cheeks were just wet because of the ocean’s water. The memory of the last last time you watched the sunrise by the sea with your family came back. Your parents were still together at that time and your brother hadn’t left town to go study far away yet. Everything was so simple back then. You used to be so happy, so carefree, so eager. You thought you would never be able to feel this way ever again. You thought the best moments of your life were already behind you.
But Hyunjin proved you wrong. For the first time in years, you didn’t regret yesterday nor fear tomorrow. You didn’t think about the stupid shit you did at a party last year nor what you were going to do with your boring degree once you graduated. You didn’t wish time away, finally savoring the moment. You felt so alive by his side.
You didn’t know how long you were floating, watching silently the sky changing colors. Minutes, hours, months, years, an eternity had passed. When you finally got back on your feet, your fingers were all pruned. As you were about to get out of the water, Hyunjin grabbed your wrist. “There’s one last thing I want to do tonight” he told you.
“It’s not nighttime anymore,” you teased him.
But Hyunjin did not seem to be in the mood to joke around. The way he was staring at you so intensely made your chest ache in apprehension. He pulled gently on your wrist to bring you closer. So close you were able to see the droplets of water that clung onto his long eyelashes. The sunrise had turned his deep brown eyes into cognac-colored ones, shades of orange and amber tinting his irises. His tan skin was glowing, and you couldn’t help but wonder if he was really a human or an otherworldly creature. Your breath hitched in your throat that had suddenly gone dry.
“Alright,” you said, in a voice that was quieter than you expected. You cleared your throat, trying to regain your composure. “But I swear to god, Hyunjin, if you ask me to jump off a cliff I - “
You were cut off by his plump lips, pressing softly against yours. Hyunjin kissed you tenderly, carefully, as if you were made of crystal. He tasted like salt and vodka, like holidays and sunshine. At this moment, you felt whole, complete. But he pulled away only seconds after, much to your dismay. His expectant eyes found yours. He seemed to be waiting for a response that would hopefully calm his nerves.
You wanted to scream ‘what were you waiting for all this time?’ but instead you just kissed him back, craving the feeling of his mouth on yours so badly. Your hands trailed up his shoulder and cupped his cheeks. The kiss grew more intense as his arm wrapped around your waist, pulling you harder against his damp skin. Heat bloomed in the pit of your stomach, spreading ineluctably to the rest of your body. Hyunjin’s prior hesitation was long gone. His lips moved urgently, kissing you so hard you would have probably lost your balance if he wasn’t holding you this tight.
Your fingers pulled on his hair tie to free his bleached strands. You were finally able to run your fingers through his wet hair. You had been dying to do so all evening. You couldn’t help but tug slightly at the rough ends. You thought your heartbeat couldn’t get any faster until a soft moan escaped his lips, sending you over the edge.
Your head was spinning endlessly. Your mind was monopolized by the thought of him. Every bit of your sanity was out the window. You loved his blond hair that was a little too long. You cherished his delicate nose. You adored his full lips. You treasured the beauty mark under his eye. You worshipped his whole being.
When it all became too much for your body to handle, you reluctantly broke the kiss. You were both panting, breathing the same air as his forehead stayed pressed against yours. His thumb was rubbing slowly against your jaw and you couldn’t help but lean into his soothing touch. He looked so glorious, his eyes half-closed, and his lips swollen, that if you had listened to the mischievous voice in your head you would have devoured him at that very moment. But Hyunjin noticed the goosebumps that had spread across your arms and the way you were shivering. He finally became aware of the freezing waves that kept crashing against your thighs.
“We should go dry off before we catch a cold” he said to you with the sweetest smile, before leading you out of the water, his hand never leaving yours.
Just now did you realize how bad of an idea it had been to swim with your shirt still on. It was clinging onto every inch of your body, the salt making it even more uncomfortable. There was no way it would be dry before several hours, especially with the sun this low on the horizon. Once Hyunjin reached the pile of clothes you left on the sand, he handed you his linen shirt awkwardly and turned around to let you change. You couldn’t help but giggle at his adorable gesture.
You made sure nobody was watching, undressed as quickly as your sticky t-shirt allowed you to and put his shirt on. It was soft against your skin and smelled like his cologne. Hyunjin had taken the opportunity of you turning your back on him to put his tee and shorts back on. You laughed when you realized that he went commando, his dripping boxers still in his hand.
He tried to distract you from his blushing face by letting himself fall to the ground. You joined him, with a loud sigh, stretching you out on the golden sand that had just started to warm up. It was the first time in 24 hours that you were lying down but your eyes wouldn’t close.
“I can’t believe you never asked what my name was and just waited around to know it” Hyunjin laughed, interrupting your daydream.
You rolled on your stomach and leaned on your elbow so that you could look at him. “You didn’t ask what mine was either!” you exclaimed, on the defensive. But his infectious laugh only ringed louder in your ears. “I was stressed out, okay?” you pouted.
“Did I make you flustered?” he smirked.
“Of course, you did!” you said like he had stated the obvious. “It’s not that often that a cute boy comes to the store every single day to buy freaking raspberry popsicles…”
“Maybe I didn’t only come to buy popsicles.”
“Oh really? I would have never thought,” you said ironically.
“Not gonna lie, I was kind of shocked that you finally talked to me” he said while his fingers tucked a piece of hair that was falling over your face behind your ear lovingly.
“Was I that scary?”
“Terrifying” he joked. You rolled your eyes and put his arm around you so that you could rest your head on his chest.
“Okay let’s start all over. Hi, my name is Y/N.” you said sticking out your hand for him to shake.
“Nice to meet you Y/N. My name is Hyunjin. Can we make out now?” he giggled, and you couldn’t help but hit him playfully.
You both grew silent as you admired the sky changing color. You snuggled your face in the crook of his neck, looking for his warmth. You wondered how he was always so warm, how he felt like pure sunshine. You thought you could spend your whole life here, just the two of you, laying on a beach at dawn, listening to his steady heartbeat, him playing with your wet hair. You would have wanted to catch this feeling in a bottle: happiness.
“Summer breaks aren’t so bad after all,” he whispered.
-----
Hyunjin’s shoulder had gone numb a long time ago but he didn’t dare to move, not wanting to disturb such a peaceful sight. You were sleeping, your mouth slightly agape, air coming in and out of it steadily. But when he felt like he would have to be amputated if he stayed like this one more second, he scooped up your head gently to put it on the sand. Unfortunately, your puffy eyes opened as soon as his skin wasn’t in contact with yours anymore, as if your body couldn’t bear to be separated from his.
“What time is it?” you asked groggily, trying to cover your face from the sun that was already a lot higher in the blue sky.
He took his phone out of his pocket, careful not to put any sand on it. “8:47” he said.
“I really gotta go”, you sighed. But you didn’t get up.
You looked so comfortable, laying there, hugged by the warm sand. Your whole body, which used to look lifeless, was now bathing in sunlight. White linen had never looked this good, he thought. The way his shirt was draping over your figure mesmerized him. Your delicate collarbones were peeking right above the collar. He noticed every freckle on your face, every mole on your body, every stretchmark on your hips, every hair on your arms and legs. He loved all of it. He had to repress the urge to caress your skin, too scared he might go crazy if he did.
You finally decided to move, much to Hyunjin’s dismay. You emptied your boots of all the sand that had found its way in them before putting them back on. Hyunjin had never seen someone struggle this much to tie up their laces before. You both managed to stand up, despite the exhaustion and the soreness.
“And I really need some Advil” you said, wincing in pain once you were on your feet. Your head must have been pounding, just like his, after this long night of partying.
“Piggyback ride?” he offered, and you smiled. He collected all your clothes before he let you jump onto his back. You had a hard time doing it, having no strength left in your legs, but after a few attempts and a fit of laughter, Hyunjin managed to hook his arms under your thighs. He took one last look at the turbulent ocean, in order to imprint this moment in his memory, before returning to the streets.
You acted like a GPS, indicating him the fastest way to get to the closest subway station. He had never seen a GPS be this confused though: you were changing your itinerary every two seconds and he was starting to wonder if you really knew were you were going. But the ways your arms were wrapped around his shoulders, your breath was caressing his cheeks and your hair was tickling his neck were totally making up for how exhausted he felt from carrying you for so long.
Once you finally reached the subway entrance after this long journey, he let you get down. Your hurtled down the stairs as you heard the loud screeching of the train getting closer.
As expected on a Sunday morning, the car was almost empty, so you easily found two seats. You let your head fall onto Hyunjin shoulder.
He couldn’t help but think about your previous ride. About how different it felt. About how world-weary you used to seem as you were staring out the window. It had only happened 12 hours earlier, but it seemed like eternity had passed since.
Sure, you still looked tired. But it was now a different kind of tiredness. The one that inevitably came after the excitement. The one you were trying so hard to fight not to miss any second of what the universe had planned for you. The one that was making you grin from ear to ear even though your eyelids were getting heavier. The one that meant you were still alive.
“I think this is my station,” you suddenly told him, interrupting his sweet reverie.
You got up in a hurry and as your body got away from his, Hyunjin felt like someone had ripped off a part of him. You grabbed your still dripping shirt with the tips of your fingers. You stood up before him for a second, your expression unreadable, before making your way to the already opening doors.
But just before you reached them, you stopped dead in your tracks as if you had forgotten something. You walked back to Hyunjin and leaned in to press a chaste kiss on his lips. A goodbye kiss that tasted so sweet. Your hand caressed his jaw soflty and he couldn’t help but notice how your skin was a little warmer than the usual.
The beeping of the doors startled the both of you. You rushed out just in time, giggling like a child. His heart broke a little when the doors closed behind you. You stayed on the platform while the train was leaving, waving your hand at Hyunjin. You looked like an angel in his white shirt that was fluttering in the wind, grinning candidly from ear to ear.
He did not know then it would be the last time he saw you.
You didn’t come to work on Monday and Hyunjin left for Seoul on Tuesday.
He didn’t know your number nor your address.
He didn’t even know your last name.
All the sudden, it seemed like you never existed. All he had left was the memory of you and surely this memory, one day, will become so old that Hyunjin himself will doubt of its reality, without any other witness to confirm it. He will probably think you were a creation of his lonely mind, a dream, a mirage.
Who will even believe him when he would tell his first love story?
But there was one thing he was sure of. He will never forget the look on your face.
Never forget how you finally seemed happy.
