Proof of Love

A light dusting of sun flours the counter my hands and your cheek. The water is raised to the temperature of our bodies. What we lack in space, we make up for with practice and patience. I sift in some salt and melt some butter. We are never out of honey, you say with a mouth full of hunger and your eye on my waist, let’s make this one sweet. The yeast blooms in the wake of your sleepy smile. Something in me blooms too. Something perennial, elastic and I cannot think of a better way to start the day. All I know is between us there is softness and there is rise there is knead and then there is need and plenty of heat. On days like this the kitchen is so warm the bread bakes itself.

Today I am making a batch of gluten-free sourdough bread, from my own starter.

This is really meant for the Bread community, but I made the mistake of saving the draft.

Stage one - wake up the starter by adding some quinoa flour and sorghum flour, then adding hot water and mixing in the flours, the liquid that the yeast generated while the starter was in the fridge, and the old batter, to a smooth paste.

It looks pretty quiet now. You can literly count the bubbles from the newly-wakened yeast.

I also put some white quinoa in a bowl to wash - I nearly always add quinoa to my sourdough batter.

The next step is to put the rinsed quinoa in my rice cooker, with a spoonful of caraway seeds and a heaping spoonful of vegetable salt.

By the time the rice cooker tells me the quinoa is done, the starter may be ready to be divided.

At some point you bake bread enough that you know which bowl the yeast prefers to rise in most and whenever you talk about it you look like a crazy because not enough people make bread enough that they know the type of bowls that yeast likes to rise in most.

Tonight I make bread

It is going to be a weekly endeavor I think

Rather than buy bread from the store, I will attempt a different type of bread each week and slowly become confident with it while saving a little money (bread at the store is 'spensive)

But tonight's loaf is um gonna be very misshapen because I don't quite know what I'm doing hehehe

Oh today. So yes, I had to stop "homemaking" this afternoon to get ready for my job's deadline, but I still had a great homemaking day. I started out with yard work and updating our backstock, then moved into dishes and laundry. Sounds pretty normal, but I Marco-Poloed friends and listened to this great episode:

And! I finally got a chance to make some fresh bread and test out some Einkorn flour. There is just something about kneading bread, rising bread, and baking bread that is so cozy. I was really hoping that we wouldn't like the Einkorn, but the breads sooooo tasty. Darn.

Well, the house smells great. And the home is tended and apparently I like the expensive stuff. Obviously.

It was a very cheerful day of home.

I'm so thankful tomorrow is more of the same.

Oh, and my hubby is almost done with my new flower bed, so now it's my turn to think about what to put in it. 😄
