Yours Still: A MakoHaru Holiday Story Now live on Ao3!

Hi everyone! I'm so pleased to share a little MakoHaru story I wrote for Sayura on Ao3 as part of the Warm and Cozy Gift Exchange. "Yours Still" (Rated T) features a pining Makoto who plans to confess to Haru at midnight on New Year's Eve, only to find that Haru has a confession of his own. Haru glanced at Makoto, then at Kisumi, and then back to Asahi. He glowered a bit, and Makoto realized that Haru was debating the benefits and drawbacks of whether he or Makoto should help Asahi. “I don’t think…” Haru began, his focus back on Kisumi, and, Makoto noticed, Kisumi’s arm, which he’d slung back around Makoto’s shoulders. Haru scowled.

“It—it’s fine, Haru-chan!” Makoto emphasized. “I’ll be here when you get back!”

“Yeah, Haru,” Kisumi echoed, resting his head on Makoto’s shoulder, “we’ll be fine. I’ll take good care of him for you.”

Haru’s jaw worked forward and backwards, and for a moment, Makoto thought he might explode. But he took a deep breath instead, ignored Kisumi, and addressed Asahi.

“I can show you,” he said. “Follow me.”

Haru gave Kisumi one last death glare, to which Kisumi just grinned brightly and said, “See you in a bit, Haru!” before he and Asahi left to drop the coats in Nagisa’s room. Nagisa, meanwhile, shoved a pair of reindeer antlers on Kisumi and steered him into the main part of the apartment. Despite Nagisa’s wheedling, Kisumi clung tightly to Makoto, though, even when Makoto sat down on the couch, and insisted on giving Makoto the specifics of Hayato’s swim class. He then asked how Haru was enjoying the apartment, if he was planning to renew his lease, to which…

Makoto realized with a start that he had no idea. Did Haru want to stay in his apartment? It was awfully nice, and close to the community center where Makoto worked. Sometimes, when he had the last shift, he chose to crash at Haru’s instead of taking the train home, and he didn’t know what he would do if Haru moved, and he had to take the train home? What if Haru chose a place even farther out? What if…

“Makoto?” Kisumi was looking at him with concern. “Everything okay?”

“Ah..um…” Makoto looked around, suddenly desperate for Haru’s presence. How could he explain his insecurities, his fears, that Haru would leave him behind, that this fear was deep-seated and had plagued Makoto since he and Haru were kids? 

“Fine,” Makoto lied, giving Kisumi what he hoped was a genuine smile. “Everything’s fine.”

Kisumi looked suspicious, but shrugged and kept talking, and Makoto, not wanting to seem rude, continued to partake in the conversation, even though he could feel his soul aching for Haru to be at his side again.

When it came to Makoto and Haru’s relationship, Makoto was usually the one who expressed his feelings to Haru in words more often than not. On the surface he appeared to be more open with his feelings than Haru was, but that was only if you didn’t know where to look: Makoto could feel Haru’s love for him every day, through his thoughtful actions, body language, and soft expressions. And when he did express his love for him in words, it felt like the perfect flavor of icing on top of an already perfect cake—perfect without it, but even more perfect with it. And even beyond that, there were times when Haru went above and beyond to express his feelings, leaving Makoto feeling breathless and filled with nothing but the tingly, fuzzy sensation of his love for Haru, and Haru’s love for him.

It has been 7 years … but! I finally finished the last chapter of my MH fic 🥳

Summary: Haruka Nanase wakes up one morning to find that something is not quite right. That something being he is now a cat; tail, whiskers, four paws, and all. To say this was a surprise is an understatement. Luckily he can always count on his friends to be there for him. But as they keep running into dead ends Haruka starts to wonder if he will never become human again, and if maybe he would prefer it that way?

While the description focuses on his friendship with Rin—a great aspect of this fic—the story spends a lot of time in Haru's mind (again, written spot-on) and scenes with Makoto. Perfect Match

When Haruka saw a simple Hi on his wrist he was disappointed at first, but then reasoned, that as long as he had Makoto in his life he could handle the little chance of ever finding his soulmate.

It was still not impossible, common words like these often appeared as a soulmark. One might hope that the counter words on their soulmate's wrist would be more specific, but there was also yet another and final indication of the true connection. Just a simple kiss was enough for the bond to solidify, changing the colour of the soulmarks. So the general guidance in such cases was to pay attention and be honest with your own feelings. Soulmate words were only a guide, something to make it easier and be sure. The infatuation itself wasn’t derived from acknowledging the soulmark, it was inevitable to be there regardless and impossible to miss. Unless driven by desperation, it was natural to become close and comfortable for a kiss only with someone you were genuinely attracted to.

After the initial dismay, Haruka decided not to give much thought about his bland soulmark. If not from listening to the first words but through listening to his own heart, he was bound to find his soulmate eventually.

Makoto was always excited to find what his words would be, so he anxiously anticipated his sixteenth birthday when they would first appear. He sighed looking at his left wrist.

He supported Haru when his words turned out to be just Hi, so he felt like he had no right to be disappointed when his words were the same Hi too. Still, Makoto didn’t feel as excited anymore and thought that it would be best to leave everything to fate and not stress about it.

Only, now when someone said Hi to him or Haru they both tensed up and waited for the person’s reaction to their reply, and somehow both sighed in relief when there was no sign of recognition on the other part. They didn’t notice at first that the reaction they waited for was not for their own words but for each other’s.

Haruka didn’t know what he would do if Makoto found his soulmate and Makoto didn’t feel like he wanted someone to just casually come into his or Haru’s life. He knew that Haru won’t abandon him as a friend, but nothing would be the same. He liked their friendship and how they spent so much time together and he couldn’t imagine giving this much time to anyone else.

When the time had finally made itself known, Haru had been surprised to find that their long respite began on a particular date: November 17th. He’d decided that such rare luck should not be wasted, and secretly began making preparations to make Makoto’s birthday extra special.

What, would you say, is the most culturally significant piece of makoharu fanart? The fanart that caused an entire cultural reset not only in the makoharu fandom, but even across the free! fandom; the most famous fanart that every single makoharu shipper should have seen at least once in their fandom lifetime; the art most commonly associated to the ship that when you think "makoharu" that very specific art comes to mind; the art that summarizes makoharu as a whole?

Also which is the fanfic version of this for you?

I think the art that transcended even the fandom itself was this piece by jwitless. It's so iconic that it stills makes its rounds on the Internet and sometimes people don't even know it's Makoharu. It's timeless, it's life changing. I'm still in awe of it to this day, and i think there are few fanart pieces that have had a greater cultural impact. But then again, Makoharu ran so anime BL could walk 😔

However the art that will always be the most significant to me is this one by deli-not-here. It was my phone background back in high school (how was i that brave lol???) and it was at a time in my life where mh really got me Through It ya know? But that's just me.

I think fanfic wise nothing will ever top 2/13189000 by tide (tothemoon). This was easily THE talked about fic after s2 aired. (Similarly heart's departure by the same author is a fic that has caused great pain to p much every person in the fandom.)

Also even tho I've never read it bc it's just so long i know Eyes Wide Open All the Time has it's own fandom at this point and i would say that's damn impressive!

1. What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care anymore?

There are so many that I tought would be forever, specially from my childhood shows. Still they give me the nostalgia tingle, so its not indifference. But maybe some like Katara and Aang? Like them but dont much care. Oh, and Hinata and Naruto I dislike now, after the ignored confession I just lost all interest.

2. Which ship would you consider your first one?

Kind hard to tell, maybe Isa x Alex from Isa TKM? I was really invested (but Isa did have some serious mental problems)

My first fanfic was a Harry Potter elf insert, so no ship there, now my first couple one was AMUTO from Shugo chara

It was probrably Sasuke x Sakura, i remember I loved the youtube videos with their fanarts, specially thought Sakura with akatsuki robe looked super cool

I guess one time? When Naruto ended... omg why so many naruto answers? a trip to memory land results in that

Always a MakoHaru hater, altrought i dont care much now, the hate is just nostalgia at this point too.

That is embarissing but i tried a little the house wilson x house fanfics, now that i watching the show.

Zosan is my OTP since I first watch One Piece. But I do have others that are mentioned around

Merthur, I will never understand why, the story point to that so much. But I do have some that get me way more mad, I just can't remember Because when I do I go in a rant

Hm, maybe drarry? It wasn't dislike per say. But just seemed weird shipping them because of my childhood. But the fanfic were so good that I gave a chance.

11. Do you have any ship that, in the past, was considered normal but now you would be cancelled over?

Sterek and Shizaya. Sterek has the age gap that o didn't even realize was there when I was younger. Shizaya is just all levels of toxic enemies.

12. What was your favorite crack ship?

Akafuri, I have it so bad for them. And it was extremely funny when they stopped being a crack ship. Also spideypool? When I started Shipping them they also didn't have anything on them, it was just funny the two together, so it's crazy that they have comics together.

13. Who is the couple you read more fanfics off?

Probably zosan, sterek and drarry? Zosan was in portuguese, sterek when I started reading in English and the Harry Potter fandom just has so many...

14. What most of your ships usually have in common?

I think I have a lot of enemies/rivals ships? Or that usually have some kind of banter going on.

15. What you absolutely hate in a ship?

First, when they are boring. Second, I hate ships where one side (A) is completely obsessed with the other (B). Specially when B does not show any interest in person A and seem clueless. I can watch romance story with these plot, but I feel like in other genres they always mess the execution up and I never feel B truly has deep feelings, just that A is convenient (thats why I don't like ships such as naruhina, gruvia, stydia, Hancock x Luffy...). Just not my cup of tea.
