Before Barbenheimer, there was “Apocalypse in Pink,” the August 1983 theme of fashion/culture magazine SPECTAGORIA. The issue’s controversial imagery of Barbie-esque models attempting to stay gorgeous and glamorous amidst nuclear annihilation sought to, in the words of editor/photographer Sera Clairmont, “revel in the morbid absurdity of the new American condition,” an “anxiety vibrating underneath all our plastic smiles.”

“It’s The Hot Pink Cold War,” Clairmont wrote in her introduction. “It’s ‘Material Girl’ on the radio and ‘WarGames’ at the drive-in. It’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ interrupted by the emergency broadcast signal. We’re told to look sexy, dress fashionable, make money, and spend money, but be sure we’re just the right amount of terrified about the bomb. Get that Malibu dream home, keep working on that perfect body, sip cocktails by the pool in your little pink bikini and watching the stocks go up — but STAY VIGILANT! and for God’s sake vote Republican, because that dream home could melt into a pink plastic inferno at any given moment. Just don’t stop smiling as the blast liquefies your skin into bubbling ooze like a Barbie doll in a microwave - it’s bad for the economy.”

TEEN TITANS (ongoing): A coming-of-age story as Superboy assembles a new team of Teen Titans, featuring himself, veterans Static, Robin, and Solstice, new Titans Thunderheart and Animal Girl, and new characters Blue Lantern and Space Cadet, to provide a space for young heroes to come into their own and find themselves.

THE SPECTRE (miniseries): The Lord's Spirit of Vengeance comes to Earth to mete out justice in a horror story with a heavy dash of theology.

ADVENTURES IN THE DC UNIVERSE (ongoing): An anthology series in the vein of 52 which features rotating casts of second- and third-string DC characters, fleshing out their stories and giving them time to shine.

MYSTERY IN SPACE (miniseries): It's a galactic whodunit as Captain Comet and Adam Strange must team up to solve a murder at a United Planets summit before events spiral into a cosmic war.

STARFIRE (ongoing): Koriand'r moves to Malibu to start her life on Earth fresh, but this attempt at a reset is disrupted by threats from beyond the stars, seeking vengeance on Tamaran for crimes long forgotten, as well as the possibility of new romance between herself and Dick Grayson.

PIED PIPER (miniseries): Hartley Rathaway struggles to reintegrate into society as an ex-con, even with the support of his friend Wally West, the Flash. He is soon forced to re-don his costume and sonic weapons after he discovers that a serial killer is targeting Central City's homeless population.

MARY MARVEL (ongoing):After Billy Batson is forced to take the Wizard's place at the Rock of Eternity, his sister Mary steps up as the main bearer of the power of Shazam. She must now juggle superheroics and a normal life as she begins classes at Fawcett University, even as Billy's enemies target her for revenge.

DOCTOR FATE (miniseries): As war breaks out between the Lords of Order and Chaos, threatening to swallow the world in mystical pandemonium, Khalid Nassour must find a way to save the world and restore the magical balance.

BOOSTER GOLD AND THE LEGION OF SUPER HEROES (ongoing): During a mission gone awry, Booster Gold is de-aged into a teenager and stranded in the 31st Century. He joins the Legion of Super Heroes while searching for a way to restore himself, and his self-aggrandizement and materialism causes endless conflict with his altruistic and science-minded teammates.

WIP Intro: The finished stories

It's time! Or at least, the beginning of time! I can and will talk about each at length in their own posts, but let's start with the basics.

1: The Hundred Fifty Seven Deaths of the Immortal Ethan Ellis

Genre: Horror-comedy (I think? Identifying the genre for marketing purposes is my biggest obstacle with this one)

Status: Edits/rewrites and querying

Pitch/one-liner: After waking up during his own autopsy, reluctant and disillusioned immortal Ethan Ellis gets pressganged into a road trip with the autopsy tech who saved his life as they search for answers to why his newly mended body is now going haywire.

Blurb/query bit: Ethan Ellis has just woken up in the middle of his own autopsy, which is a first even for a guy who’s gotten himself killed over a hundred fifty times. Now his newly-reanimated body is going haywire, forcing him to relive those untimely ends; that would be another unfortunate first. Ethan and the very confused, slightly traumatized autopsy tech that saved his life want answers. If they can’t find any, this could be it for him—for real this time. But between the running tally of his past failures to make a difference in the world, a carsick cat that hates his guts, and the growing apathy he’s been fighting for decades, for the first time in his three-hundred-ten-year-long life, Ethan isn’t sure whether he cares. To make matters worse, Ethan finds himself catching feelings for the woman who saved his life. Then he starts seeing the ghost of the wizard-wannabe that cursed him with immortality in the first place. Then his fellow immortal turns up to help, but for some ungodly reason decides that ‘help’ means ‘kidnap the autopsy tech (and her horrid little cat) and press-gang Ethan into the only thing he hates more than his growing certainty that nobody in this world cares anymore: a road trip.’ A little like if The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue were written by Christopher Moore, Ethan Ellis is a horror novel for horror weenies (aka me, the author), and a comedy for depressed optimists (also me, the author), with just a little bit of romcom for flavor-- because really, what says "romance" if not being stuffed in the back of a '99 Chevy Malibu with a woman who has already held your literal heart in her hands and only dropped it once?

Standalone, with potential for a series if desired; probably going to serve as my debut novel. I already have several queries out on it, and I'm hopeful about my chances for a few of them.

2: The Rockbridge Experiment

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Status: Rewrites, with the goal of shortening (first draft was a shelf-busting 365k)

Pitch/one-liner: A struggling human detective, a dying elf, and a conflicted half-dwarf are brought together to solve a string of troubling kidnappings and murders, but stumble into a conspiracy of hidden magic and vicious human experimentation that runs far deeper-- and nearer-- than any of them could have guessed.

Blurb/query bit: (still working on this, so bear with me if it's disjointed) For Detective Evan Grant, life last week made sense. At least, as much sense as it can make when you're questioning your entire life and solo parenting your orphaned younger siblings. Then she got this assignment. Fae in the human district. What could go wrong? A lot, it turns out, and none of it in the way she expected. She probably has a crush on one of her new coworkers, the other definitely sees the future, and all four of her siblings manage to get themselves suspended. People are vanishing into thin air, a terrorist is back from the dead, magic isn't extinct after all, and she definitely doesn't want to be a cop anymore. Life is imploding around her, and she's got no choice but to hold it together. If she doesn't, someone's definitely gonna die. Maybe a lot of someones. Led by visions of the corpse of a man not yet dead, it's a race against time for Evan and her new partners--a terminally ill elf who also happens to be the last Arcanist in the world, and a half-human, half-dwarf who is frustratingly distracting for reasons Evan can't even begin to unpack. Unfortunately, that race plunges them headlong into a conspiracy that threatens to upend the delicate balance between humans and Fae, and if they can't get ahead of it, war may start all over again. It's a game of chance with a hopelessly stacked deck, and little do they know, they're about the play against the dealer. With an ensemble cast written in multiple POVs, The Rockbridge Experiment is part slow-burn mystery, part horror, and part Southern Gothic, all wrapped in an alternate-Earth urban fantasy setting. The Dresden Files meets Bright, minus the misogyny and copaganda apologetics.

Part of a series, which sucks for the already doorstopping wordcount, but I'm doing my darndest to get it publishable because I love the universe and characters I've created here, and really believe in the stories I'm telling with them. My strategy is to get something else published first, then query this one so agents aren't as put off by the word count.

Sleepover Saturday q: If you were to tell a tourist what they should do in 3 days to get the Best LA Experience, what would you recommend? This includes occult sites/stores, really any place you'd recommend

oooooh okay! I'm assuming you're starting in Hollywood, because that's where I live, so here we go!

DAY 1: get thee to the Academy Museum. it is exquisite and it will make you feel some type of way about movies but it probably won't take all day so go ahead and wander about LACMA and the La Brea Tar Pits for the rest of the afternoon. either pay to go to into the exhibits at LACMA or stick to the free stuff (Urban Light and the tar pits); they're all in the same park on the same block so be sure to take your time and enjoy the green space and beautiful sunshine. head to the permanent farmers' market at the Grove for dinner, and make sure you go up to the top floor of the parking garage to see the best views this side of the San Gabriel mountains. if you have time, go to the Quentin Tarantino-owned New Beverly Cinema to catch a movie on 35mm film before heading back to Hollywood to see the Times Square of the west coast: the Walk of Fame lit up for the night.

DAY 2: driving all over god's beautiful forsaken creation is a time-honored LA tradition, so today you are gonna take the interstate 10 out to the Pacific Coast Highway and drive all the way up along the coast. stop wherever you want. the beauty of SoCal beaches is that you can just pull over on the side of the road and hop out of the car onto the sand and into the ocean! it's easy! it's free! it's what god intended! then once your feet have gotten wet, keep going up to the Self-Realization Fellowship Center, aka the lake shrine, and sit for an hour or so in meditation by the lake. then keep going up the PCH past the Getty Villa to route 27, and take that all the way through Topanga. the canyon views are sublime. (at least until you get back to the 101.) oh and for food, make sure you stop at whatever mom & pop place catches your fancy along the way. I had a really good tuna burger at Malibu Fresh Fish Market patio cafe, but as a general rule whatever looks good probably is.

DAY 3: get an early start and drive west down the Sunset Strip. Sunset is easily one of the very best streets in the city because if you stay on it long enough you get to experience the best of what Hollywood has to offer, from the strip to Bel Air to the Pacific Ocean if you drive far enough, but today we're going to turn onto Benedict Canyon in Beverly Hills to go up to Mulholland Drive. YES it is every bit as beautiful as the movies make it seem, however it is a WHOLE LOT more twisting and winding so I really would not recommend going more than 25mph. you're gonna take Mulholland back east toward the 101, and then head for Burbank, my favorite shopping destination bar none. in one neighborhood you have Besame Cosmetics' flagship store, The Crooked Path occult shop, the Mystic Museum horror boutique with rotating exhibits, and piles of stores like Slone Vintage and the year-round Rob Zombie-owned Halloween Town. further downtown (still in Burbank) there's Unique Vintage's only brick-and-mortar store, Story tavern (great burgers), and Artelice patisserie, where they always make the macarons fresh and if you get there late enough in the day, they'll give you some free ones with your pastry.

DAY 4 (BONUS DAY): if you still have time after all that, go take a morning hike in Runyon Canyon and then head for a studio tour at Warner Brothers. eat lunch beforehand at the Smoke House (open since 1946) right across the way, and eat dinner afterward in Hollywood at Musso & Frank's (open since 1929). grab some cocktails at the Roosevelt Hotel or Chateau Marmont afterward if you feel like it. idk I'm not the boss of you.
