For some reason, I am Convinced that Angel and David are sort of mirrors of David's parents. Mama Shaw was an unempowered, chaotic little gremlin (/lh /pos) like Angel. I also feel like Gabe and Mama Shaw met at a concert of all things. She threw herself into a mosh pit and when she was Obviously Overwhelmed, Gabe helped her get out.

We all know about the Oakland/San Francisco (Bay Area) music scene. But when I think of it, I think of hazy, guitar-centric pop. I don't think of meticulously crafted pop in the vein of Lawrence Arabia, Laurie Shaw or The Martial Arts.

Skyway Man "Flight of the Long Distance Healer" is just a great album. James Wallace (Oakland) writes music that reminds me of the work of Mull Historical Society and the like.

Mama Bird Recording Co. (Portland, Oregon) has just released this. It sits nicely alongside another Mama Bird artist - Matt Dorrien.

so now. do we think Carson's mother would turn up in season 2? i'm a sucker for a messy, almost-resolved, Absent Mother Storyline™.

- she's seen Carson's name in the papers, she's too intrigued and proud (and selfish?) to stay away, has to see it for herself, waits outside the ballpark after a game... the tricky reunion, bit fraught, leads to pieces of a precarious reconciliation.

- OBVIOUSLY Carson's mum notices the way Carson looks at Greta. she ain't blind. eventually asks directly when she realises Carson needs it. she's seen the world and has learned long-since "to take people as they are" (she and Maybelle get on famously...).

- Carson smiles, stalls, wary. picks the hem of her skirt. "this is safe with me. you're both safe with me. if you're ready." a hand covers Carson's own to still her, ground her.

- Carson's rushed but resolute "i want you to meet her" is met with confusion - "but i've already met her? all the girls." Carson's already disappeared inside the house.

- Greta is equally confused as she's led by Carson to a quiet spot on the porch, just the three of them. Carson tells Greta it's safe, waits for Greta to feel safe (always), and then, softly - "this is Greta... my, er... my Greta."

- the three sit in this delicate moment, talking and sharing - in hushed tones - a moment that's just theirs. the couple are idiots in love bashful and the mother is proud and knowing and warm.

- she doesn't stay. she always keeps moving. but she gives Carson an address to write and tells her she'll keep reading the sports section. a proper goodbye, for now.

- she hugs Greta with purpose, whispers something that leaves Greta with glassy eyes and a determined smile, nodding "yes", before glancing at Carson.

- it's still hard. it's not perfect. it was never going to be. but it's something.
