Animated movie of the day: Millenium Actress (Sennen Joyū, 2002)

Why do humans create art? It's probably impossible to point out a single reason, as there's multiple purposes for which the plethora of mediums that compose what we call art are used, but at it's core it's safe to say there's a core component: human expression. And tied to human expression also lies human connection.

Directed by Satoshi Kon and loosely inspired by the story of real actress Setsuko Hara (who retired from acting after a prolific career when she was still 43 years old and disappeared from public life until her death at 95, never having married), the film is about retired actress Chiyoko Fujiwara. Unlike Hara, she does agree to an interview later in her life to a director she knew at some point called Genya Tachibana, as both discuss her own prolific career.

What follows is one of the most striking films about… well, film. We see the life of a woman explored through her acting roles and what they meant to her, mixing the reality of that universe with the films within, which not only covers all sorts of genres including everything from jidaigeki to science fiction (hence spawning a millenium), but also simply allow the narrative to be guided by the motions of those films mirroring the actual events of Chiyoko's life, including an impossible love that pushed her to keep acting in the first place.

Not only is this one a fascinating piece because of it's intertwining of the real and the fictional, but simply because of what the fictional tries to communicate and hide in the first place. It shows an incredible passion for the medium, but more significantly, it is used to express the yearnings and those things left unsaid by the people involved. Visually explosive, it's as poetic as it is heartbreaking in the best way possible, powerfully conveying an entire life journey through the lens of artistic expression.

Kazuya Nakai - Zoro || Kamiya Hiroshi - Law

-It's Kamiya's second time in Twitter Space, previously he was with Mayumi Tanaka (Luffy). He says that last time he babbled a lot thanks to Mayumi san's presence, even though he forgot most of it by now (hmm how convenient that you forgot this, kamiya san 🤨)

-Anytime One Piece (the 24/7 YouTube broadcast of the episodes) has 150M views and already in its 4th lap having completed broadcasting all episodes 3 times.

-The entire Space focused on the two voice actors reading out a heap of letters from the animation staffs about the Zoro vs King and Kid-Law vs Big Mom episodes.

-Kamiya jokes about being slightly younger than Nakai and calling him "Nakai-kun" instead of "Nakai san". Funny that Kamiya's career as a voice actor is actually longer than Nakai's.

-The Zoro vs King finale had 20000 frames in the episode which set a record. The movements were a lot more fluid and film-level. After all, often it's considered overwork if it crosses 5000 frames in a TV episode.

- The animators themselves tried out new things. It seems in one of the shots, Wado ichimonji's direction was reversed from the manga's direction as a realistic correction. Cue jokes about Zoro (and King's) long (long) attack names. Also, anticipation for legendary Mihawk vs Zoro to match the quality.

- Cutting to Kid-Law vs BM, Kamiya commented that it was scary that the fluidity of movements was so good that it made him wonder if that level of effort was necessary at all (he said it's like a Disney movie).

(in case you didn't know, this scene was indeed animated by an animator who worked in Disney.)

- Kamiya says it was both fortunate and unfortunate that Mami Koyama (Big Mom) wasn't there with them in the booth (she recorded her part separately). Both Kamiya and Nakai agreed that they'd give up immediately if they were to confront against Mami Koyama somehow.

- Kamiya also noted that Big Mom used "ore" to call herself in the final scene ("I am Big Mom") - exerting dominance 💪 her falling scene was intentionally animated beautifully.

- 1066 was animated by people all over the world, so the time adjustments and language barrier was a challenge. Episode director Henry thurlow balanced it well. In his letter, Henry credited the animation director for adjusting a variety of art styles from all participating animators. It was his first time directing a One piece episode, in fact it's the first time a foreigner has directed an anime episode. He thinks the episode was successful.

- Kamiya was calling Kidd "the extra budget man" for having his complicated-to-animate attacks costing extra budget 💸

-In the final scene vs Misery, Kamiya was asked to ad-lib breathing sound for Law. Kamiya immediately said "sure, got it". Regarding this, Kamiya said he loves doing ad-libs, it adds a little more life to the characters.

- Finally, announcement for the upcoming Egghead arc debut in anime (Nakai was exhausted of reading letters so Kamiya took over to read director Nagamine's final letter lol)

- The Egghead arc would appear in a new artstyle. Unlike the serious WCI and Wano, there's a more relaxed, "fun adventure" vibe for the future adventure island. And the animators are finally free from the torture of drawing Kaido's scales (and the kimono design patterns) so they're in a relaxed mood having escaped wano 🌞 and entering "the cool future where zoro has long legs and wears dove shoes" 👢✨

-(letter cont.) "..Also, about a certain change in Law! What will happen to his voice? It's an interesting future!"

Summary:

In the distant past, the Guardian of the Milky Way galaxy named Lanancuras began to harbor a desire for more power. Because of his connection to the galaxy, he was able to absorb parts of planets and add them to his strength. As a result, he began invading the worlds he was assigned to protect. In the wake of his destruction, a following of creatures from across the galaxy pledged allegiance to Lanancuras and became known as the Kadrians. Taking notice of his ever-growing power and followers, the other Celestial Guardians confronted him; however, he had become too powerful, and they were defeated. Unable to subdue Lanancuras, the Celestial Guardians each gave up a part of their power and combined it into a single new Guardian, Mushra. In a final desperate attempt, they used Mushra's core by transforming it into a powerful card with which to seal Lanancuras in a prison. The prison was created from the remains of planets that had suffered under Lanancuras' tyranny. Because planets are themselves large beings, their combined strength (along with the power of the card) was able to restrain him. Thus Lanancuras was successfully sealed in a large meteorite.

The meteorite was sent off into the galaxy to be sealed forever. Meanwhile, the way Lanancuras had increased his strength had consequences on the planets of the Milky Way On Earth, around the 22nd century, it was in the shape of a virus that merged with human DNA and destroyed the humans that way. In order to eliminate the virus, scientists worked on combining human DNA with the DNA of animals and other creatures immune to the effects. They succeeded and created a sentient race known as Enterrans (a race of engineered Earthlings) which are based on humans, insects, reptiles, birds, sea creatures, wild beasts, and phantom beasts. Eventually, a cure was found and the human race survived.

However, due to Lanancuras' influence, the Enterrans fought their human creators as well as the robots that worked with the humans, driving the human race to a near extinction state. Luckily, a scientist named Dr. Daigo Tatsuro placed his 4-year-old daughter Yakumo in a sleep chamber in hopes that she would save the human race and find the human sanctuary Shinzo and bring peace back to Earth which was then renamed to Enterra. When the meteor that Lanancuras was imprisoned in struck Earth during the earlier parts of the Human-Enterran War, its fragment had struck an infant Yakumo giving her abilities that she would later discover.

A translation of Minky Momo's original story part.2 (from Minky Momo Maniacs part.2)

3 months after the release of Minky Momo Maniacs part.1, a second game had been released. The game contains two special interviews with Takeshi Shudo and Mami Koyama, a gallery of Watanabe's illustrations, the english and spanish version of "La Ronde in my Dream"....and many other things. After collecting all the puzzle pieces hidden in the game and completing the puzzle, you can unlock the next part of Minky Momo's original story by Takeshi Shudo and Hiroshi Watanabe

"One hour before the closure of Fenarinarsa...Minky Momo headed to the Land of Prophecy. And 50 minutes before the closure of Fenarinarsa...Minky Momo arrived at the Land of Prophecy.

The main street of the Land had prophecies such as the world-ending prophecy "Armageddon," the prophecy of angels winning in the Great Demon War "Katsudon," the prophecy of an orphan meeting their mother in their dreams "Parent and Child Don," and an old man predicting the day he would be abandoned by children. And a cute girl is playing mahjong at the cabaret "London" and so on and so on... I'll leave the rest to you all, as I might anger Minky Momo if I continue to write such nonsense. Anyway, people are gathering more and more in the land of prophecy... In the dreamland where the crickets have started chirping... Minky Momo of Fenarinarsa is wide-eyed in surprise.

"Wow... fortune telling is really popular, huh?"

"Miss, would you like a fortune telling?" The fortune teller approaches Minky Momo.

"Fortune telling... if there's a front, there must be a back too, so... fortune telling stories are impossible. I don't believe in fortune telling... I don't know... I don't need it... I don't have time..." Minky Momo replied. After all, time was approaching 45 minutes before the closure of Fenarinarsa.

"What... is there a child in this country who doesn't need fortune-telling??" The old woman pointed at Minky Momo and shouted. "Such person is guilty of abduction, confinement, and extortion... Payment must be made in advance in full!"

Minky Momo replied to the old woman, "Payment is made after seeing the show..."

"What the ****...?" the old woman, puzzled, asked. Minky Momo said to her, "Hurry, hurry... I am Princess Minky Momo of the Dreamland Fenarinarsa... Take me to the king of the Land of Prophecy. Time is running out, it's 43 minutes before Fenarinarsa falls asleep."

"Miss Fenarinarsa, huh... Sorry for that... Let's get serious." The fortune-telling old woman, who had learned Minky Momo's true identity, nodded solemnly. Around them, everyone was serious, repeating incomprehensible words like a song for Minky Momo.

"Before? What about until now? ......That's for business use......Being serious is serious......"

"Huh? What are you all singing?"

"It's not a song......It's a prayer to be happy in the predicted future." Before anyone knew it, the figure of the fortune-telling old woman had changed into that of a boy. And, smiling at Minky Momo, he said, "Princess Minky Momo of the Dreamland... I have always wanted to meet you. Welcome to my country..."

"Are you the king of this country?" Minky Momo was surprised. He seemed to be around the same age as Minky Momo, and it was a little surprising. He looked like a very cool boy with a colorful appearance that you don't see often in Fenarinarsa. "Yes, I, Notras, lead this country... Prophecies and fortune-telling speak of the future. Adults with little time left to live... in other words, adults with little future... are less important than children with more time to live... in other words, children with more future when it comes to prophecies and fortune-telling."

"If that's the case, babies have the most future..." Minky Momo said. Notras shook his head. "Babies are living in the moment, crying and laughing with all their might... They don't think about the future, they just live in the present moment. Those who live in the present without thinking about the future... such happy babies do not need prophecies or fortune-telling. It's the people who think about their own future who need prophecies or fortune-telling... Dreams are the same, right?"

Minky Momo replied, "Because there are dreams, hopes, and a future, we can hold on to them."

"We are quite similar," Notras said. "The Land of Dreams and the Land of Prophecy... both believe in the future. If dreams and prophecies come together, a wonderful country can be created. Everyone dreams of the future I predict. Isn't that exciting?" He smiled. Notlas doesn't seem like a bad person.

But Minky Momo doesn't want to dream of the world destruction that Notlas predicts. She doesn't believe in a future where prophecies come true. No, she doesn't even know what will happen tomorrow. Minky Momo doesn't have the power to see the future with her magic. If she did, what would she become when she grows up? Surely her dreams would come true... The theme song contradicts itself. Minky Momo didn't even know that prophecies existed in this world. "Why do the people here believe in prophecies?"

Notras said, "I don't know how to keep living. Living now is so uncertain. At least if I knew what tomorrow brings, I could figure out how to keep living."

Minky Momo whispered, "Do we need to see the future to live? "

"The present is too painful. That's why I predict. Right now, it's painful, but after the world ends, we can be happy."

"Why does it have to end?"

"Because it's such a painful world that we don't know how to live in. Such a world is better off ending. Somewhere in our hearts, we all wish for its destruction."

"How dark..."

"I don't think it's a matter of light or darkness. But if you say it's dark... it will only get darker from now on. The world is heading towards its end. But even so, if we can see the future, we will somehow understand how to live in the present."

"But if you know the future, you can't have dreams. Fenarinarsa would be troubled by that."

"You can still have dreams... If you dream of the prophesied future... It's easy."

"A prophesied future... That's not a dream." Continuing this conversation feels like going in circles. Minky Momo is starting to feel impatient. As she talks with Notra, the clock is ticking... It's 24 minutes before the closure of Fenarinarsa. "I don't have time anyway. It's now or never.... I have to try to believe in the prophecy of Notras."

"Then, predict my future... What will I become when I grow up?" Minky Momo shook her wand and chanted those words. "Pipiruma pipiruma puririnpa...papareho papareho doriminpa... What will you become with an adult touch... Become what you want to be..." Minky Momo had many adult forms she wanted to become. She wanted to become all of them.

Notras took a deep breath. He couldn't decide which was the grown-up form of Minky Momo. After all, Minky Momo herself couldn't decide what kind of adult she would become. There were countless possibilities.

He was also troubled by the sight of Minky Momo in a wedding dress holding hands with him. This sight,embarrassingly, was not a lie. When Minky Momo first saw Notras, she thought, "Ah... What a wonderful boy." It was a fleeting moment that became one of the future dreams that crossed Minky Momo's mind.

"Which one is the future me?" asked Minky Momo. Notras may have seen the true future of Minky Momo, but... he shook his head.

"I don't know... I can't predict it." Each of them was lovely in its own way.

"In that case... please, can you stop predicting the end of the world... at least until the day I wake up and we can meet again?" Notras nodded. "Yes... at least until the day you wake up and we can meet again... I will stop."

Fenarinarsa's closure was just 5 minutes away... Minky Momo made a promise to Notras and returned to her country.

"I hope to see you again... Ah... that's my dream... not a prophecy..." Notras smiled slightly, looking a bit lonely.

"SOMEDAY SOMETIME..."

"SEE YOU AGAIN" ...

And so, long, long ago...even though it may seem like just now, Fenarinarsa closed for a rest and fell asleep. The time of its founding is a distant memory. However, Minky Momo did not know what happened while she was asleep...Notras kept his promise. However, after abandoning the prophecy and becoming a monk in pursuit of his dreams (he was a serious person), he disappeared. Notlas' descendants then created the prophecy's country and spread it all over the world. This is why a prophecy and prayer, which seem similar to dreams and hope but slightly different, spread throughout the world. Long, long ago... just a little while back... Note: Top ten hottest animated characters, part eleven. Only caught a few episodes of Shinzo as a very young child. I mostly just remember Ryuma trying to forcefully wed another character. And snakes were involved somehow. (Wedding guests?) Maybe I should try watching Shinzo in its entirety. If I already had, Ryuma would probably be higher.

Still woefully behind on BNHA because my New Year’s resolution was to read more nonfiction. So I’m mostly using the volumes as rewards.
