The Sea Creature of the Day is the Portuguese Man o' War!!!

aaaaaa!!! 🥰🥰🥰 i love these guys. researching them was what lead to my long lasting obsession with siphonophores after i saw one on a vacation as a child.

there's something oddly beautiful to me about their method of gathering food. just floating there with these incredibly painful danger noodles hanging below. and it's a siphonophore so it's like... an apartment building of people that's also one creature all peacefully waiting for the currents to take them to food. it's beautiful and so so so cool and i love them 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Why must pretty things kill me?

My current "pretty but painful" fixation is the blue sea dragon. I mean, just look at it.

Just look at that brilliant blue hue.

The blue sea dragon (glaucus atlanticus) is a sea slug found in tropical and sub tropical waters. They float upside down in the ocean, and that's also the reason for their bright blue colour. It is so that they can blend in with the blue of the ocean.

But my favorite thing about these creatures is the fact they are absolutely tiny. They only grow to be 3 cm. They are tiny little guys. (つ≧▽≦)つ

If they are just cute little guys, then what makes them so dangerous? Well, it's their prey. They feed on the portuguese man o' war (that's is a ridiculous name). The man o' war are like jellyfish without actually being a jellyfish (taxonomy is weird). The only thing notable about them here is that they have venomous nematocysts capable of delivering stings painful enough to kill fish and occasionally humans too.

Which, since the blue sea dragons eat them, gives them access to these stinging cells, which they store in their own tissues as a defense against predators.

Because these slugs concentrate the venom, they are capable of producing a more painful and deadly sting than their prey. Which shatters my dreams of petting them because I will die a miserable death.

This also implies Faye used that (i assume) very shitty strategy successfully to woo kratos. He, one could say, swiped right.

Kratos is a simple man with no fishing skills.

The man o’ war is interesting for this rating since while it has no bones, I can’t fully describe it as ‘chunky’ more accurately I would use the word ‘squishy’ or ‘gloopy’. In a similar dilemma, while I would describe it as ‘gloopy’, the man o’ war doesn’t seem to secrete slime or mucous, so it’s not particularly gunky either. However, this creature is UNDENIABLY FUNKY!

I'm on ep5 of LOK and remembering why I have never gotten past the first season of this show. The love triangle shit is driving me INSANE in the worst of ways. It feels like fucking high school drama.

I will stick it out... because I have heard the show gets better... and also the promise of endgame Korra and Asami.... I will stick it out this time....!!!!
