does anyone else feel like some of their comfort content isn't even about the content anymore, its about how you felt when you first read/watched/played the content? cause my comfort series is dsmp. and i know the storylines and the characters and everything aren't inherently good, but when i'm feeling sad or need a laugh or if i'm just bored, that's what i turn to. fanfics, animatics, and the vods. but like, sometimes when i'm rereading a fanfic that i've read so many times that i have it practically memorized, or watching an animatic that i see in my head every time i hear that song, the comfort doesn't come from the content; it comes from the familiarity. it comes from the fact that a year ago i was doing the exact same thing. it comes from the soft rememberance of how excited i was to watch it for the first time, how i replayed it again and again. there's this one animatic in particular called wings by halfy & winks (absolute banger btw, go search it up right now if you haven't heard of it) that i've watched probably upwards of a thousand times. and last night i was rewatching it (again), and when it got to the sad part i realized i didn't want to cry because it was sad, i wanted to cry because i remember crying the first time i saw it. a literal wave of nostalgia hit me so hard i teared up thinking about it. yeah i'm rambling but i just wanted to share this. idk man.

My Dragon Prince Boards season 6, episode 608

Hello, everyone!
Finally I have some time to write this! You can not imagine how demanding is to work making television shows, everything is for yesterday, haha!
Complains about work aside, it is time to talk about my last episode of season 6, episode 8. This one was... special.
I can say without a doubt that this was one of the most emotional episodes I have ever worked on. I cried every time I watched the animatic, and I cried again watching the final episode a few days ago.
I think is a lot of things together: a lot of important things happens, characters die, Katolis is destroyed, one of the quasars is fake! Aaravos!!! ... but also because I witnessed my team bring together their A game, telling this story in such a beautiful way.
I learned a lot from this episode, specially from my Unit Director, Mike Jones, who was in charge of boarding the "Hearts of Cinder" spell sequence; what a masterclass of emotion, storytelling and cinematography! I love Jason Simpson's performance during the show, but in particular in that sequence, and I think the boards took everything to a new level.
Now, let's go back to my sequences.
My first one was Soren going down to Viren to ask him to perform the spell. It was good to have this last interaction between both of them after all the work I did with the characters in 605.

There is a lot of subtle staging in this one. The way the light is hitting over their heads, how present in the screen the staff is; Viren's hesitance is something that I remember was important for me to portrait properly.

One of the things we talked a lot during this sequence was in how to use the light as narrative element. I was not interested in the classical reading of going into the light as "good" and shadows as "bad".
But light as hope, options, forgiveness, etc.
Viren walks away from the light when he gets offered the staff not because he is going "bad" but because he doesn't feel capable to do what he is being asked to do.

Soren is coming directly to him, removing his chains, giving him back his staff, asking him for help. But Viren hesitates.
And I think that that was a genius think for the script to call. Viren is not a man looking for the first chance to "redeem" himself. I am not even sure that he believes that he deserves that possibility.

But they are running out of time. The situation is dire, and as the light get blocked by the falling debris, the options are becoming clearer. Hope is dim, but there is something to do: Hearts of Cinder.

Viren, still full of doubts, explains to Soren why the spell is so hard to perform: the price is a human heart. A price that the Viren of the past would have pay with not second thought, but not the current one, no the one who understands the weight of dark magic.

But Soren has no doubts: "Take mine" I still have chills listening to the delivery of that line. And I think here is the moment Viren decided to sacrifice himself. While he is being consumed by doubt and fear, his son will is clear, Soren will do the right thing, even if that cost him his life.
And that is what Viren never had before. The willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good. He looked at his reflection in Soren's golden heart and saw and answer, saw love, hope.
I just think is beautiful that Soren's conviction gave him the chance to do the right thing for once. Soren taught him the ultimate lesson.
I love this two so much.
My next sequence is a simple one, Terry and Claudia arriving to Katolis. I liked to draw Claudia's new hair. I wish I had more sequences with her in this season.

After this is Moon nexus time!

After all the drama with Viren and Soren the massage sequences felt a little silly, hahaha. but was fun to make.
I added the little detail of Rayla having issues landing, while Callum is just so good at it, haha. Fun to have their roles reversed for one, and Rayla being the clumsy one.
I like the moment when Lujanne ask them if they are a couple again and they exchange this nice look. I know that Rayllum is a huge thing in the fandom, and while they are not my type of ship (I am into the sapphics, you know) I think that they are pretty cute together, and Is always fun to make moments between them.

I just wanted to share with you this silly face, lol. Sometimes you draw things in boards that don't translate that well into the final show, but It is fun anyway, you want to inspire the animators to push the performance as much as they can.

Back to serious business. I love the shift when our heroes realized that there is only 2 quasars and 3 coins. Callums turn into Raylla knowing that this will destroy her. I really enjoy how the use of the lens to blur Lujanne in the Background creates this efect of hyperfocus on Callum and Rayla.

She is facing a terrible decision, who to save. So we move the camera to focus only on them. Is an intimate moment.

I like this framing, Rayla is in pain, crying, Callum is listening, but by the framing we can se that he is holding her. Callum is there for her, always.

And that is how I finished my last sequences of season 6, with Rayla crying.
Working on this season was one of the honors of my life. And I can wait to share with you how was making season 7, because was... A LOT, for sure! hahahaha.
Hope you like this! And feel free to ask if you have questions about the storyboard process!
And thanks for all the notes, comments and support! It is truly appreciated!

A little bonus:
Look a the cool crew jacket that Bardel gave us when we wrapped seasons 4 to 7! (Finally I can show it without making it an spoiler of the name of season 7!!)

I admittedly haven't watched your stream playthrough of TGAA games, mostly because I was playing through them with my fiancƩ very slowly, but we just finished them and I was curious what your opinion on them was? My fiancƩ and I enjoyed them but we both felt like they were pretty... Tame, compared to mainline AA. Like, there wasn't really any insane twists that shook the characters to their cores, everything wrapped up so neatly for everyone, it felt too easy, in a way? Also the big bad was wayyyyy too predictable.
I'd recommend checking out these amazing animatics that Infamouslydorky did of our playthrough!
youtube
My feelings re: The Great Ace Attorney games are sort of complicated, so this answer's going to be kind of long. I'll keep it spoiler-free, though.
I think they have the best main cast of any AA game. The music, character designs, and quality of life are basically the best they've ever been. That's really cool. I really love a lot of the one-off characters too. Enoch Drebber, Pat and Rollie, and the little plague mask coroner girl are huge stand-outs for me.
However, I think Shu Takumi has a lot of... foibles as a writer, and the way they manifest in these games is more evident and more obnoxious than basically anything else he's ever made.
I've played every game he's ever made and I can tell you that Shu Takumi writes the mysteries and twists in his stories first before anything else. I think he has a great sense of when he wants the twists to hit for the audience and he's great at figuring out where a twist will hit in a case... but he's remarkably bad at making character motivations match up to the story he's trying to tell.
In particular, he's awful at giving characters reasons not to tell each other things. 90% of a time your protagonist in a Shu Takumi game will ask a completely reasonable question to an ally, and the ally will avoid answering simply because it's not time for the player to know the answer yet. This is an issue in every game he's ever made. Even his best game Ghost Tric, is plagued by this. i.e. The way Lynne refuses to tell you her goals even though you're a literal ghost who's saved her life 3+ times in the same evening. Like, what do you have to lose, Lynne? Do you think this ghost is going to leak your goals to the police? No, it's just in service of delaying information so the player gets that information when it really hits. My friend circle has some to refer to characters in video games not telling you information for no reason as "Shu Takumi-ing".
Because most AA games are really silly, this isn't usually a gamebreaking issue. Why isn't your ally telling you information that would allow you to help them? Well, they're stupid, that's why. This is a game where you get possessed by dead people to get evidence and cross-examine a parrot. It's not serious. Everyone's a little bit on the stupid spectrum.
That's not really the case with TGAA. The games still have silly moments, but the characters are very explicitly smart. Kazuma is meant to be a legal prodigy on an exchange program. Susato is incredibly well-read and her father is a well-traveled and well-respected man of the law himself. Iris is a genius. Sholmes is whacky, but he's supposed to be cannier than he lets on.
Because of that, it's really noticeable when Shu Takumi doesn't know how to delay information or elegantly set up an interpersonal conflict. His fallback is always to have a character drink The Stupid Juice. For Case X, this character is suddenly stupid and does stuff they'd never do. For Case Y, it's someone else.
When you're dealing with Larry Butz and Lotta Hart, you come to expect that sort of thing. The inconsistency is part of their character. But when Susato can't identify her own father sleeping on the couch because... I dunno, I guess she landed on her head when she fell out of bed this morning, what the hell are we doing here, gang? Why are we doing this? Some people in our chat were like "This is a joke". I don't know. Is it? it really a joke if it takes 20 minutes of real gameplay to SOLVE THE MYSTERY instead of walking over and look at him, like any rational person would do?
I also can't go into too many details about this without spoiling things, but I really really hate the core overarching plot of this duology. I would bet almost all the money in my bank account that Shu Takumi didn't have the details of the second game 100% ironed out by the time he wrote the first. They don't lead into each other at all and so many characters' actions need to be unfathomably stupid for everything to work out the way it does. It kind of makes me retroactively dislike a lot of the cast. Especially Sholmes.
Also the assistant Van Zieks gets in the 2nd game is unfathomably bad. Everything about that setup and how that character acts is my least favorite thing about the game and maybe my least favorite thing that ever happens in the entire franchise. It makes me SO angry.
The games are still pretty good though.

hi, hellenic polytheist anon again-
This time im not actually asking any religion related questions (im still reading and researching some stuff, specifically the festivals and events) but I actually wanted to talk abt epic the musical because OH BOY WAS THE VENGEANCE SAGA A MESS. Its my fav musical and I really love it, I could look past the inaccuracies because I could tell Jorge was doing it to change the story for the plot he wanted to show but VENGEANCE SAGA⦠donāt even get me started on the livestream animatic š why does Odysseus have a jetpack. Because yes, he turned the wind bag into a jetpack. Just. Wore it on his back like a backpack with the wind keeping him the air. Im serious. I wsh I wasnāt, but I am.
Honestly, as an artist theres so much I dislike about Poseidonās design. Iām not sure if the livestream animatics are canon but they were comissioned by Jorge himself, giving a lot of artistic directions. Wanna know the design given to the god of the seas, earthquakes, storms, and part of the big three trio of gods? A blue man in a wetsuit looking thing.
https://epicthemusical.fandom.com/wiki/Poseidon (you can see his picture here)
Its so⦠unserious. Like, what is this? Even the animatics from the fandom design him better! Why is he so modern and casual. The only thing intimidating about him is his crazy facial expressions, which are cancelled out by the monstrosity hes wearing. Also, why are literally all the other gods normal skin colors, except Poseidon? Why is he so blue, WHY IS HE SO BLUE. I get it, hes the god of the sea, but at the very least donāt turn him into a glorified smurf ššš
And then thereās the actual animatic of 600 strike which⦠Jetpack⦠why. Just, why. Even the fandom is getting kinda āwtfā at the jetpack. Apparently (from what I could tell) the jetpack gave him the speed to hit Poseidon 600 times very quickly and??? Thats it??? Thats all it took to defeat him? Not only does this not make sense in terms of power scaling, it also doesnāt make sense thematically. In past songs, Odysseus always won with wit, effort, and/or divine help. And it always took so much effort and the stakes were so high. In 600 Strike it was just way too easy. Polyphemus felt more difficult than him.
Some people also say āmaybe Odysseus was helped by Ares since his eyes were glowing red in the animaticā and to that I say it still doesnāt feel like enough. Its also probably unlikely since we would have heard his theme in the song. Jorge is very particular and detailed about the little details in songs (ex: Poseidonās signature instrument is the trumpet, which you hear all over the song Storm since he brought that storm. In Suffering, you hear Circeās theme when Scylla is mentioned hinting to their connected past. When Poseidon goes āyou couldve avoided this if you didnt kill my sonā in Ruthlessness you hear the Storm theme showing the storm couldve been avoided if Odysseus didnāt spare Polyphemus. Hell, thereās this thing called a danger motif that plays whenever major danger is nearby, and during Ruthlessness when Poseidonās name was being chanted it was to the tune of the danger motif)
However, we donāt hear Aresās theme anywhere in 600 strike. Honestly, nothing about that song made sense. The torture scene would have been cool if the characters werent Odysseus and Poseidon because. Why??? Like, couldnāt he just summon a giant wave while being tortured? Or an earthquake since they were on land? Like. Bro. Odysseus was using his storm as a jetpack. Just call off the storm temporarily and watch him fall into the sea. Whats he gonna do? He canāt walk on water. And if he escapes? Just re summon the storm. Even after Poseidon is tortured. Just. Kill Ithaca either way. If hes too scared just do it from afar and make sure Odysseus is in Ithaca while you spam earthquakes and tsunamis at it. Once again, what are they gonna do? Nothing! Because hes a god!
I could talk more about the questionable character design choices (Hermes Im looking at you and your green lantern ripoff looking outfit) and plot choices but I feel like this is getting too long š« At least some of the fandom seems to think this was also kinda weird.
Uuugh this sounds like a mess. I don't have the time to get too involved with the fandom and the choices behind the creative process but I have seen many moments of unseriousness and odd choices, which is not matching the vibe of the songs and the vibe of the story.
Finally, I saw that Zeus also has horns?? The logic for this choice is not compatible with Greek culture, I'm sorry.

Been bingeing T.U.F.F. Puppy and Bunsen Is a Beast while I've been sick. Here's a liveblog of highlights I enjoyed:
Every line of dialogue in these shows is fantastic...
- "You don't need to breathe- You just need to obey my every command." - "In the interest of our friendship, which is way more important to me than anything in the world... I'm taking the speedboat. Think about it- You don't want the hassle of owning a speedboat!" - "I've been nice this year. And by 'Nice,' I mean I've kept my more sinister acts on the downlow through deception, deceit, and occasionally framing others." - "This is the greatest moment of my brief life!" - "Anywho, Santa... You're looking buff! Have you been hitting the gym~?" / "Are we seriously doing this?" - "To protect my standing on the nice list, can you please refer to me as Marsha during this particular evil mission?" - "You guys have to save Christmas! ... I would, but I'm in a box and I'm 5." - "You don't need to know the laws when you're a criminal. Or a baby! Just a little fun fact I thought I'd throw out there." - "I know you are lying to me... Your status says I'm lying to The Chameleon." - "You voluntarily touched me in an affectionate way!" - "I love our new crib! It was an impulse buy. (Gasp)- We should steal a baby to put in it!" - "If I'm so dumb, how come I've been getting away with slowly poisoning you?" - "You're going down for armed robbery!" / "They're not armed." / "Are you kidding me? Have you seen this man's guns?" - "Let me leave! I'm not even helpful!" / "I'm never helpful and I'm still here." - Okay... Such good animatic redraw material.
- So many silly characters, many of whom look like cinnamon rolls but would actually kill you. I love them. I should finish my 'fic WIPs. Dudley's later flanderization-characterization still makes me sad... He cared so much about working in Season 1 that he couldn't settle down on vacation. He'd explore, he'd volunteer for things, he obsessed about paperwork... That's who he is... He was good at his job. I miss him.
- Who do you think has the higher kill count: Chameleon eating [confirmed sentient] bugs his whole life, or Keswick wiping out his home dimension? ... I guess it would HAVE to be Keswick because he would've killed the bugs too, huh?
- I really love the worldbuilding vibe of "You're allowed to kill other creatures, but if the ambulance is called, everyone is treated equally." Yeah, we sell flea collars and body spray. Yes, the Chief got incredibly sick when Dudley wore a flea collar into work; that is a thing that happened.
- Making one of the main characters a flea was pretty fantastic in itself, let's be honest. How many anthro shows have a bug main character (unless the show is all about bugs), and how many of them have a special mobility aid thing that magnifies their appearance, keeps them off the floor, gives them extra strength, etc... It's great.
- I love the Chief's monitor cart:
Why does it sit in chairs? How can he use the hands? Outrageous.
- It's heavily implied that even the creatures that look and act feral are actually sentient, which just makes Kitty bringing the Chief dead mice as a form of affection so much darker...
[cnt'd]
- How on earth did The Chameleon get invited to career day to speak to little kids about being a super villain? Whose idea was that?
- I love "Guard Dog"- It's probably my favorite episode. So many good quotes, such a goofy set-up, you get to travel outside Petropolis, it delves into some of the in-universe witness protection lore... It's great.
- I love Chameleon snuggling with Dudley because they're handcuffed together and he's cold-blooded. I like the end when Kitty is handcuffed to 5 people at once, but Dudley leaving her that way feels justified because she left him for the entire ride to Petsburg.
- I particularly enjoy Kitty only having 4 limbs, so Larry and Francesco are both chained to the same leg. I feel like they could very easily rip that off, especially with how often Francesco tries to eat stuff.
- I wanna talk about Chameleon's side hustle of going on dates with people who ask him to shapeshift into their dream person.
- Wannabee was forced out of the auditorium halfway through his evil scheme so the students could have play rehearsal.
- I will never be over Wannabee gushing over how cool he thinks it is that he can make honey and that he will outright tell you he makes it mouth to mouth. They could've given us bees passing the honey by hand, but no... No, we get to see them do it mouth to mouth and Wannabee brags about it. Hilarious.
- My adoration for Birdbrain is also growing. What do you mean he's lonely and cloning himself to save his species? What do you mean he can just walk into T.U.F.F. headquarters and shred their files for his nest material because he's endangered and they can't hurt him? That's hilarious.
- I think I said this years ago, but I really like how there's no romance between Birdbrain and Zippy. He hates her equally to all his other henchmen. Everyone he works with is useless, so he leaves them in the car with the window cracked instead of bringing them to heists. Man wants a partner and kids so bad, he puts up with the most annoying people you've ever seen... He hates them so much...
I can't stop thinking about the B-plot in "Pup In the Air" of Birdbrain trying to keep his deposit on the house he rented, but his henchmen just keep making terrible choices-
- Every time I think about how Owl's name is Terry, it just cracks me up. I don't think Birdbrain knows Owl and Bat have first names because the only two things they ever say are "Who?" and "Where?" so they can't communicate who they are as people.
- Also, shout-out to the commitment to Bat being blind. Unclear if he uses echolocation... He just kinda runs around. Why on earth does he have a gun?
Bonus screenshot to highlight Bat's gorgeous wing design:
- Why don't Owl and Birdbrain get feathered wings? DO they have feathered wings? I assume they don't, because Owl flies like this:
And we know Birdbrain can't fly, but his arms don't become wings either:
- Obsessed with Snaptrap having the power to erase minds and the only time he uses it is when wiping the minds of critics who were mean to his dancing clone.
- Some of these hero-villain relationships are so good... Dudley broke The Chameleon out of the holding cell so they can enter a two-person contest. Dudley pretends he's been poisoned and The Chameleon just goes along with it because it makes him look like a cool villain. Kitty gets dance lessons from Snaptrap... Dudley and Snaptrap were roommates... Snaptrap dated Dudley's mom... Dudley dated Birdbrain... They are so goofy.
- Speaking of Dudley dating Birdbrain, that episode cracks me up for many reasons, but one of them is definitely "Dudley getting in the way and being a pain even when he's trying to do his best job being sweet and helpful." "I'm blowing kisses~ And now they're hitting you~" /starts jabbing his fingers all over Birdbrain while Birdbrain's driving
- Can't stop thinking about how much I love Larry. Him and the evil crew he pulled by being a silly brother-in-law <3 I wish they would've delved into the Larry & Snaptrap are brothers-in-law thing in-show (It was only confirmed in outside trivia iirc), but... them.
He sit:
This would make a great "Draw the squad" meme, actually.
Oh, I just looked it up to see if I could find a source (because it was years ago that I read this fact and I suddenly worried it wasn't real). No direct source link, but here's what I found on the Wiki:
I've always assumed that means he's married to Pat since she's the only confirmed sister Snaptrap has-
But like, I think about this all the time... The Snaptraps are canonically a crime family, so did Larry know what he was getting into? Are they on good terms? They're not divorced. Is it a forbidden love? I still want a huge rivalry between the rats and the shrews... It would be so funny...
We know Snaptrap and Francesco share a bunk bed (or at minimum, a room with bunkbeds in it). I assume Larry goes home to see his wife, right? We know she's an actual successful criminal who thinks her brother is a failure, so, like... why does she let her husband hang out there where he's being tormented daily?
I watched the episode where Snaptrap gripes that Larry's face scares off girls, but like... that's so funny. Is it because he's married? Some of the other members of D.O.O.M. - like Ollie - are sad that girls don't talk to them, but Larry doesn't, like... ever discuss that. I wish he would've bragged about being married. I think it would drive Snaptrap up the wall. Maybe he does. I really wish we would've seen Larry at the Snaptrap family reunion. Larry, your wife...
I doodled Larry with his Murray hair because it's cute when he ties it back :)
- It will never not be funny that when Larry defected and founded his own league of villains, he broke the entire crimefighting system by refusing to call in advance to tell T.U.F.F. what he was about to steal. Overnight sensation. Everybody hates him for that.
- Once upon a time, I joked that Larry probably worked with his brother-in-law instead of his wife because Snaptrap's crimes are smaller, so Larry probably gets out of jail sooner and can spend more time with the kids, house, etc. Knowing what we know about what a meticulous planner he is when he takes over, I think that sounds about right. It's all one big, elaborate thing... That's very Larry.
- There are so many little moments of the Snaptrap-Larry hatred I enjoy, like how they play word games together and Larry just gets in his face about it. Larry rarely communicates directly with T.U.F.F. (barring the episode he's his own villain), but in "Girlfriend or Foe," he jumps on the call just to brag about how he's beating Snaptrap in the game and I think that's fantastic. Even back in "Share-a-Lair," they were playing word games.
- In the truth syrup episode, Snaptrap admits he doesn't actually hate Larry, but he's hard on him because he thinks Larry has the most potential to be evil... but Larry straight-up confirms that he's been putting black widows in Snaptrap's gym bag. It's so funny to me... Snaptrap is mean in predictable ways, but do not mess with Larry. He'll get you back.
- I like how they went on a gameshow where Snaptrap had to guess Larry's secret desire, and it was-
The reason they lost out on their free vacation to Maui was because Larry stuck a rattlesnake in Snaptrap's pants at the airport and they couldn't get on the plane. He just can't help himself... He hates him so much. I just love them. He sit...
Why does Larry just have access to rattlesnakes and cobras? What does he do in his spare time?
- I like when Snaptrap breaks out of the holding cell to get snacks and then he goes back. That's always great.
- I love how committed Mikey is to being president of the Beast welcoming community. He has ONE JOB and he's going to do it. He loves his gift baskets. What do you mean Muckledunk's biggest export is silent whistles and they sell 9 per year? What.
- Everything Mikey says is fascinating to me. Also, within the first ~60 seconds of knowing him as a character in Episode 1, you get so much... He's an extravert, he does his research, he knows his town history, he plans ahead, he gets excited when he doesn't mess up his prepared speech, he's savage for no reason... It's great. Flawless character introduction.
- Like... Just the entire dynamic of "Bunsen is the first Beast to come to human school - and he's a member of a species known for eating humans - and it's on Mikey to make him feel welcome, not just as a fellow student but as an authority figure" is really interesting to me. Most of Bunsen's friends throughout the series are Beasts, which makes sense- Bunsen's actually pretty shy. Like... you wouldn't guess it by looking at him and his role as comic relief, but he's definitely less social than Mikey.
This screenshot just tells you the whole series dynamic:
It's Mikey and Amanda at each other's throats and Bunsen anxious in the background. SO funny. I also watched "My Gym Partner's a Monkey" years ago (and a little bit of "Squirrel Boy"), and both those shows lean into the "human is the comedic straight man and the non-human is the wild one" vibes.
But no... not Bunsen Is a Beast. It's Mikey who's the energetic, off-the-wall wild card. Bunsen just lives here. He's straight-up just a nerd who got sent to human school. Love that for him. Mikey's driving this car, but Bunsen keeps him from plowing into buildings and lakes.
Literally your best defense against Mikey is that when he gets too excited, he faints. This happens in multiple episodes.
Bunsen has such incredible "Perfectionist, told he's mature for his age" vibes... In Episode 1 when he almost eats Mikey, he whimpers, "Sorry, Mikey... I failed to co-mingle..." Everything in Bunsen's plot line comes back to "If you screw up, we can kick your whole species underground again." That's so much for a little guy. Ugh. My heart. I think he'd get along fantastically with Hazel. Mikey would be a lot for her.
- Every time Mikey and Bunsen try to say something in sync, but fail to do so, it's funny to me...
Your honor, this is a show about friends and kindness...
- I totally forgot the person Amanda invited to school for the "someone you wouldn't normally hang out with" event was someone with a restraining order against her. That's objectively hilarious.
- Cracking up at Mikey asking Amanda for break-up advice. Also, Bunsen warned him that if he tried to have a break-up talk with Willa, she might just eat him, and Mikey did it anyway. There is one thing this boy will not compromise on and it is "I am not comfortable with this. Stop coming onto me." Love that for him.
- I forgot Mikey got invited to a dance by Bunsen's cousin and he was so terrified he stopped breathing.
- "Extremely horny rich girl" & "Guy who will lure her in with promises of kisses and then dodge at the last second so something horrible happens to her" is such a funny combo. Mikey-Amanda rivalry, you will always be famous to me... You cannot get Mikey to accept her flirtations... He would sooner chew his arm off, I think.
- I can't believe Mikey threw Amanda off Santa's sleigh. Flying above the city. Really high. On purpose. Of course he would.
- I always forget Bunsen's house was just, like... built in the middle of the decorative roundabout piece.
- Mikey sending his own clone to run his conspiracy club is still one of the funniest plot set-ups I've ever seen. I didn't see it coming because Mikey was bringing in clones for every club he's in, but... yep. I can see how this went wrong. Mikey is such a terrible dad to his clones; it's so funny. He just dunks on them every time he sees them.
- I like how Nerd Mikey is equally as unhinged as regular Mikey. Logically he would be - He's a clone - but what is going on inside his head... Sir, you can't just leave school property to go back in time...
- What do you mean Mikey is in the "Amanda Stares at Mikey and Makes Tiger Growl Sounds" club. I mean, by default he kind of has to be there, but that's so funny...
- Totally forgot Mikey wants to write a song called "Hey Mom- Get Out of My Room." His hatred for his clingy parents plagues him constantly.
- Amanda- "I'm going to watch Munroe change his shirt. Raowr." / Mikey, screaming- "I will DIE in this shirt!"
- It is SO funny that even if you ask him directly, Bunsen will avoid questions about whether he eats people, but his first instinct to smelling Mikey covered in barbecue sauce is to tell him he smells delicious, and his first response to his BFF Wolfie suggesting they eat Mikey on a plate of noodles is "That does sound good." Hey. what.
And Wolfie knows Bunsen's hesitant about it, because he blatantly calls Mikey delicious, removes Bunsen's eyes, and tries to eat Mikey while Bunsen's looking for his eyeballs. Later he actually does get him in his mouth. And Amanda. omfg Wolfie...
We literally get to see a health class short film that's like "Let's talk about people-eating urges and feelings of guilt that come with it!" omg. Bunsen, why is that in your house? Why was that already on your person? Do you wanna talk about it?
I wonder if BiaB would've done better if it had been played with Invader Zim vibes. These shows have similar energy, but Zim has the colors and music to match its dark vibe. BiaB also gets pretty dark, but the colors and music make it so peppy and cheery... I think that's silly. You can tell it's got FOP energy (Sweet on top, horrifying underneath).
- Bunsen has so much anxiety about following rules even when they're in direct conflict to his happiness... He is doing his best...
- Forgot Bunsen is personally offended to learn that humans don't give Santa gifts, because Beasts give gifts to their present-giver. He just has such a strong sense of personal justice and loyalty...
- I cannot get over Bob slowly fading from the timeline, but continuing to report the news anyway. He's flickering, gradually losing his legs, but he acts like nothing's wrong.
They brought him a stool because his legs got disintegrated... They throw things through his head..
- I can't believe Amanda almost put a kitten in a woodchipper.
- Mikey's parents are so overprotective, distant, and weird about him, they canonically have not given him The Talk about where babies come from. He doesn't know his middle name.
- I LOVE how Mikey's relationship with his parents is just, like... him screaming that he wants them to back off and let him grow up. They just spy on him with a drone. "Stalked by his parents" is such a silly thing to do with your main character.
- They leave him at home to fend for himself, but still micromanage what he's allowed to do (Ex: He can own a llama and a scary praying mantis, but not a dog). Heavily implied they avoid their son because germs. There is no doubt in my mind they will continue spying on him when he's an adult. That's rough, buddy.
- Is Mikey a kleptomaniac? He just steals things... Amanda's dog. A shopping cart. He took some guy's lamp for no reason. He just took it on his way out.
- It's not like "Mikey is a massive guilt-tripper" was new to me, but it's still SO funny to watch him blatantly take advantage of Cosmo and Wanda even after Timmy repeatedly asked him to stop wishing. Timmy gave him an inch and he fought for a mile.
- Perfect depiction of the Mikey-Timmy relationship:
Mikey, please stop running Cosmo and Wanda ragged- / I totally hear you. No <3
- Mikey is older, but Timmy is unquestionably the more sensible and responsible one of this duo. Which is horrifying.
iirc, the "Beast of Friends" crossover took place when Season 10 was airing, though it's probably pre-Chloe since she wasn't there. Consider: Timmy resisted Chloe as a godsister because Mikey had already turned him off to the idea of sharing fairies.
- I totally forgot Mikey got sent to the future once. I can use this...
- Timmy calls Mikey "kid who's older than me" because Mikey didn't like him just saying "kid"
- Mikey adored the crossover. I think Timmy's glad he didn't have to hang out with Mikey any longer than he did. Just in August, I scrapped my "Best. Day. Ever." prompt for the 130 which was about Mikey running Timmy ragged, but... I kinda want to bring it back. Mikey is exhausting. He will break you down.
- I like how Mikey was excited by everything Timmy showed him, but Timmy was uneasy about Bunsen's house; it's Timmy who took charge of trying to explain things as realistic to his confused dad. Mikey literally did not care if people were put off.
- I still think it would be funny if Mikey and Dev switched drones for a day. Also, you'll see this in my Dale character profile on the sideblog, but my headcanon is that Mikey grew up and went into security with a pinch of robotics on the side (taking after his parents), so he just, like... bothers Dale. They met as kids when Mikey tagged along on an installation trip for the Dimmadomes, playing into my long-time headcanon that all the rich people in Dimmsdale have wild security systems because of Mikey's parents. Dale does not like him. Mikey's been mailing Dale Waffle House coupons for 20 years. There are no Waffle Houses in California.
- Mikey would snap Peri like a toothpick. He's just a lot and I cannot imagine a world where Peri has the patience for him.
Anyway, thanks for reading my liveblog. Silly, silly...

Back at you! Care to rank all Sagas?
oooh yay okay! I'm going to do this by order of preference
Cyclops Saga
Troy Saga
Thunder Saga
Underworld Saga
Ocean Saga
Wisdom Saga
Ithaca Saga
Circe Saga
Vengeance Saga
Cyclops - All around super strong. I get all of these songs stuck in my head frequently and they're all narratively fitting. Doesn't get me pumped as much as some of the others, but it's just so solidly good that I've got to give it first place. The pacing here also feels right.
Troy - REALLY strong opener. Those first few notes hit me and I knew IMMEDIATELY that I'd like this musical. I think all of the songs in here are strong but Just a Man is SO GOOD. Too good, honestly - almost none of the rest of the musical can stand up to it, which is an incredible boast for a second song.
Thunder - We talked about this a bit before, but it felt like a return to form when it came out. Suffering, Scylla, and Thunder Bringer are easily some of the best songs in the whole show, though I'm not really a fan of the others; they're a bit too on-the-nose for me.
Underworld - No Longer You CARRIES this album. Like, The Underworld is a very good song and Monster is... not for me, but I don't care because oh my GOSH does No Longer You slap. I need this to be the song every fandom adopts for animatics istg
Ocean - This placement was really difficult to decide. Let's be real, Ruthlessness completely outshines the rest of the songs, but everything in this saga feels like it needs to be present for the story Jorge wanted to tell. These songs are also each pretty unique and memorable... but Ruthlessness oh my GODS
Wisdom - My expectations for what I thought I'd like about this saga were completely inverted with what I actually like most from it. Love in Paradise is probably my favorite. God Games was a great idea, but I'm not sure it was given enough room to breathe; when convincing Circe to let his men go takes Odysseus four songs earlier on, having Athena convince six gods to end Odysseus' captivity in the span of five minutes felt... odd. Not saying I could handle it any better, but I think this plot point could have been adapted a bit differently. The Athena and Telemachus stuff is all really cute though!
Ithaca - I adore Penelope's voice. The Challenge is easily my favorite, but Hold Them Down is also really good. The rest... I have feelings about, due to how Odysseus' character was handled, which I'll touch on more at the end of this list. I think this saga in particular would gain a lot from actually being staged.
Circe - The more time that passes, the more I like this one, but I don't think these events needed to take up a whole saga when all it leads to is 1) Maybe kindness is good (something dismissed in the next saga), and 2) Here are the directions to your next location. Wouldn't You Like is my favorite song from this saga, but it could have easily been a line or two.
Vengeance - I don't think I've actually listened to this one again since it came out. The whole ramped-up anime battle thing doesn't really work for me. There are some other creative choices here I disliked that I'll elaborate on further down.
I definitely noticed myself enjoying these less as they went on, and I think it's because I've found Odysseus to be a much less compelling character since Thunder Bringer/Love in Paradise. What made Just a Man and No Longer You so great was Odysseus' internal battle between being a good soldier/leader and being a good man; I think that's a fantastic lens to look at this ancient story with. Then, once he chooses his own desires over everything else, he loses a lot of that complexity, which frustrates me because it could have been a cool modern interpretation if it felt like he faced any consequences. Polites' death had a much longer impact on him than all of the rest of his crew.
Those who've followed me for a while know that the Iliad is my favorite book; I reread it every year and have read four different translations so far. It's famously anti-war and filled with tragedy, and one of the most tragic aspects of it is the futility of it all; no matter how strong the heroes are, the tide of war shifts according to the gods' whims, and it's also up to the gods to decide who lives and who dies. This acts as both a way to point out how stupid the whole conflict is and shows a reflection of what indomitable forces the gods were (and are!) viewed as.
This in mind, I cannot understand how or why (Epic) Odysseus defeats Poseidon in a show of force. Beyond not making sense, it goes against Odysseus' character in the source material. In the Odyssey, this latter storm stirred up from Poseidon is one that Poseidon knows Odysseus is fated to survive; he just wants to make the journey harder, and Odysseus makes it through in a handful of pages at most. Odysseus' slaying of the suitors would have been seen as honorable; he'd have done it no matter how desperate he is when arriving at Ithaca's shores.
(Maybe my opinions wouldn't be so strong if he'd at least defeated Poseidon with a clever trick of some sort instead? Maybe the last saga needed a Monster reprise where Ody actually faces the reality of going home as he is. Idk.)
Overall though, I really enjoyed it and look forward to listening to the whole thing now that it's done!
#ask#the perils of trying to enjoy media while being both a theater nerd and a greek myth nerd haha. and a writer#thanks!#oh and disclaimer: it's been a hot minute since I fully reread the odyssey so my recollection may be a bit off

Briar Playlist Deepdive
Woe be upon you I wrote 1500 words yelling around music that makes me feel things
Rambling under the cut and also gonna reblog with a part two because of the audio limit
Starting with this because this is THE song that made me start compiling a playlist for her. THE Briar song of all time for me. Particularly her peak cult days. The āI want a life that will give me purposeā and āDonāt crack through my facadeā lines delivered in with all the arrogant greedy rock star vibes hit especially good.
This one is very very much Briarās pre-cult backstory. Honestly if I were to ever put the effort into a full animatic, this would be high on the list because I can see it SO WELL. The chorus āAll the kids cried out āplease stop youāre scaring meā, I canāt help this awful energy, god damn right you *should* be scared of meā is just sooooooo š„ŗ. I also love love love the lines āIāve grown familiar with villains that live in my head, they beg me to write them so they'll never die when I'm deadā as alluding to Bhaal sending her the urges to continue his own power and legacy.
This one I added really early in playlist building literally just because mushrooms. BUT there are some good in character moments to chew on ESPECIALLY the ending bit which is very much a vibe for Briar just after she murders her druid circle and decides AHAHA FUCK IT NO MORE FEELINGS EVER AGAIN.
This one is less about *specific* lyrics because the verses are kinda just vague ominous occult sounding stuff but OOH MAN THE VIBES ARE OFF THE CHARTS. If you want a song that captures of the vibes of a fantasy murder cult this is it.
This one is also pretty self evident I think, especially as the plot with Gortash progresses and her motivations shift just a *bit* from āIām gonna murder everyoneā to āIām gonna take over the world and *then* murder everyoneā. I like that āI'm gonna run this nothing townā makes me think of the city of Baldurās Gate specifically. The āBite my tongue, bide my timeā line at the very beginning also reminds me of how sheās holding back her urge and *not* murdering Gortash until heās done being useful to her. (This could also fit well into her post-tadpole vibes also. Biding her time in Act 1, actively planning to take the brain in Act 3).
I mean. Honestly explaining myself almost feels silly. Itās RIGHT THERE. This song is definitely a mutual one with Gortash, with both of them feeling this towards each other. A particular line that hits especially good is āSmells like something Iāve forgotten, curled up died and now itās rottenā because a) yaaaaay rot imagery and b) alludes to Briar having deliberately killed that part of herself that tries to care about people.
Another one that honestly speaks for itself and a strong contender for a possible animatic because YAY CULT LEADER BUDDIES. I also particularly like this cover because I loooove the sort of wicked relish these ladies sing with and the more sultry of the two singers is one of my headcanon voices for Briar. Favorite lines include āIf they say that Iām a god, thatās what I amā (so much so that I drew a piece for it) and also āIf we donāt comply [...] I could see us being sacrificed or stuffedā (which I imagine Briar saying with a huge grin on her face at the idea).
This is one that I like to sort of fill in the nuance and contrast between Briarās view and Gortashās. āA coronation, a beheading, From the funeral to the wedding. Do you think they care where the crown goes?ā is VERY much a bhaalist talking to a banite, you know?

Out of curiosity, what're the animatics in your head? No pressure to share.
oh bestie dont say that cause we can be here stuck forever you and i and my musical taste and my terrible obession with the bloodharbor ripper.
however, if you insist... longpost warning :) no particular order just as im doing a mental and a playlist check.
first animatic of my hellpit: Soul Fighter Gwen and Pyke doing the Lunchbox Friends handshake. Just because its iconic and they are best friends. Seems horrid to animate or to conceptualize in an understandable way to do an animatic, but they are iconic and they are besties and they do this. Convince me otherwise.
second animatic of the hellpit of my mind: Empire ants by Gorillaz. Originally was about my fave lol champions and my friend main champions (initially Pyke, Lulu, Thresh, Ahri and Varus) but yeah, i dont know. Im thinking about just Bilgewater champions, lyrics are very fitting to the feeling of living there, and also because i think Pyke would listen to gorillaz specially this album haha. Animatic like the videoclip with conceptual illustrations of the characters just doing stuff, dunno, would be cool.
youtube
I recently thought about an animatic with Sarah x Illaoi breakup with Woke Up from adventure time Obsidian, not polished idea but could be interesting if explored.
youtube
'I'll die anyway' by girl on red animatic for Ruined King AU Pyke. Whoopsie. Animatic with slow descend to horrible ending, isolation feelings, mm it reeks trauma baby. And i would add a small animatic or illustration with 'Sayo-Nara' from DDLC. Just to stab myself right on the heart.
youtube
Oooooohhh i always dreamed with doing an animatic with the Sailor Moon opening with the first 5 star guardians, keeping it that 90's anime style. Its so polished in my mind. I also love to imagine star guardian Lux in the place of Usagi in 'otome no policy'.
youtube
youtube
I also imagine an animatic with the Ahri (recent) team (Fortune, Syndra, Soraka, Ezreal) but with My Sweet Heart from Tokyo Mew Mew. Just to give them another opening. Its what a foxgirl leader makes me think about.
youtube
'Awoken' By wooden toaster was such a banger, it's been a while i imagine a whole animatic with Empyrean Pyke on it, seeing how he was before becoming an empyrean, his empyrean self, and how he haunts the other versions of himself, but always having some root to his old self, if that makes sense?
youtube
Any song by cascada. Not an animatic but it would be funny to make an mv circa 2012 of our beloved boogie man. Cause everytime we touch i get this feeling and everytime we kiss i swear i can fly. Rainbow effects and images rotating with rad 2010 video effects. My fever dream. Or with 'Monster'. I would throw up of happiness.
Althought i always wanted a 'Suki Suki Daisuki' by Jun Togawa animatic about Pyke. Expression of love through violence? Damn. I rotate him in my mind like a rotisserie chiken everytime i listen to it. Kinda like the videoclip where he would be stubborn but also a sucker for affection.
youtube
this fucking song hits too hard i dont know where to start. I thought about EVERYTHING. Ocs. Self Insert. Default Pyke. Ruined King in general. Other Star Guardians. It never fails. Most recent one is animatic of Soul Fighter Gwen and Pyke where she refuses to accept his death and to let him go but she reasures her that things are just the way they are, but you know Gwen wont accept it nonetheless and will always do everything to keep him alive.
youtube
Funnily enough i always thought about an animatic with Chip and Dale rescue rangers theme but with the Omega Squad. Its edgy and its cool in essence but what if they were actually goofy and corny? Episodic? No one dies dramatically and they are just silly? Tristmo undertone? Heck yeah.
youtube
#oooops rebbloging with the rest cause i put too many videos :)#omg sorry for the huge post#this also works for archive if i ever do anything#wich i wont#but you know#maybe one day i sit my ass and learn shit about animating or doing animatics

Ehehehe @purplecladmerchant and @stone-stars y'all are enablers so here's my rambling about songs that make me insane about Naddpod (Technical difficulties interrupted me halfway through this so it's not as extensive as I would have liked
Basically because I don't want to be here forever I'm going to give y'all the songs I am most insane about currently in no particular order. the links are to youtube
Putting my specific ramblings under the cut but one day when I have all the world in time I want to make a Band of Boobs' Animatic to the Village The Wolf and the Boy by Taylor Berret
Cocaine and Abel by Amigo the Devil I discovered this song about the same time I hit the Shadowfell Saga in Bahumia so its. A lot. I mostly associate it with Vampire!Hardwon but its got some Moonshine vibes too. "Everyone is born with self-worth and how easily it turns to doubt." and "I've always been scared of loving someone just a little bit more than I'm loved"
Because I just read Frey's fic; Standing in the Dark by Nickelback is a Beverlin song and I will not apologize for recommending Nickelback because; "Everybody lies too much.... cause hell is what we all go through to try and find an angel like you." "Need your light around me or else I'm just standing in the Dark" Its about Them ok.
The Boxer Simon & Garfunkle Listen since episode two when Henry switches places with Shank for the first time I've had "In the Clearing there's a Boxer and Fighter by his trade.... I am leaving I am leaving, but the fighter still remains" Stuck in my head about Henry. I'm sorry the Boxer by Simon & Garfunkle was written about Henry Hogfish to me I can't help it.
I've also said it before but god Father's Lament by Poorman's Poison is So Much relating to Henry especially because of; "Your mother knows that I loved you both but she won't tell you that I tried."
The Name Of God by Mustafa is a Fia song to me. Not like Explicitly but I feel like "Who's lord are you naming, when you start to break things?" and "Did you do it in the name of God?" are most relevant to Fia with her Dad and a couple of the vague spoilers I've seen.
At Least My Heart Was Open Foy Vance This is another vibey one but like. "You're the one who crossed the line." It's about Zirk y'know? "At least my blood's still pumpin, I know it won't some times."
Aaaand the power went out before I could link that last song so I guess I'm leaving y'all with that.
But rapid fire:
One by Johnny Cash is an Eldermourne song to me and I'm insane about it.
A little help from my friends by the Beatles and Last Man On Earth by Anna Bates are about the Hexbuds and Last man on earth especially makes me want to cry about them.
Also Look What They've Done to My Song by Amanda Jensson is about Twighlight Sanctorum to me.
Ok Im done thank u all for indulging me I will be doing this again
Should I use Naddpod as an excuse to inflict my taste in music on all of you or should I restrain myself
#woe my taste in music be upon ye#im sitting here in the dark typing out these tags like a crazy person before the router battery dies...#curse you tree falling on the powerline#naddpod

Could you do an analysis of Conner's character with the song "I'm Still Here (Jimās Theme from Treasure Planet)"
Because there is some correlation there but my mind ain't thinking of the words to form a sentence about it. And I've been listening to it for days- and want to hear someone talk about it. My favorite cover is Annapantsu's.
Just imagine Conner mumbling the lyrics under his breath and fumbling his fingers on the strings of the guitar mimicking its melody. He'd be so sad but finds comfort in a song that reflects his hope and his situation he was in. Like brrruuuhhh, cause I get that feeling when a song relates to me a lot and still wishes hope for the listener. Anyway got songs that makes you think of Superboy?

GOD. it's been AGES since i've seen this movie but this song is giving me brainworms. Jim even has an undercut and an earring and a cool jacket in the movie im getting ideas uh oh...
anywaysss this song is very fitting in general for like young ppl trying to grow up and form their own identity but it fits so well with kon like.
"i am a question to the world/ not an answer to be heard" idk but this is like his debut and clone origins in ROTS i guess, like what will the world look like without superman. actually i think part of kon's early character was based on the question "what would superman be like if clark was not raised by the kents when he was young?"
and the next verse is sooo him. "i won't listen anyway" yEAH he never listens he's a bit of a rebellious boy, "and i'll never be what you want me to be" *gestures wildly at his whole schtick* yeah. yeah that fits
"I'm a boy/No, I'm a man" God a major part of his whole character is relationship to aging and maturing and being young and growing up THIS DO BE HITTING DIFF
"And how can you learn what's never shown/yeah, you stand here on your own" he literally only has implanted knowledge and memories but like. He's never shown or taught things and kinda just fucks around and gets himself into messes and SOMETIMES people come in and lecture him
"And I want a moment to be real/Wanna touch things I don't feel/Wanna hold on and feel I belong" ive seen people say that another reason kon acts like That in the beginning is bc he wants to experience everything bc everything in his brain is not his own or artificial and he wants to make it his own. and ugh yes BELONGING T-T
"And how can the world want me to change" everyone telling him to grow tf up
"They're the ones that stay the same" ironically its usually HIM who doesnt want to do the changing
And then the whole "Im not here" to "Im still here" just gives me the vibes of him hating being called superboy and the very thought of being STUCK as superboy and never getting a chance to be superman, to him accepting the title and saying things like "I'm superboy! I don't have a mother or father--all I got is who I am!" LIKE no matter what he will get up again and give his whole heart and everything into things
OKAY I COULD GO ON BUT YES. GOOD SONG CHOICE
as for others that remind me of Kon:
Get Famous - The Mountain Goats (i wanted to make an animatic to this butttt oh well)
Runaway Runaway - Mars Argo
Good Kid - The Lighting Thief Musical (this whole musical fits the yj/teen hero squad but this song in particular reminds me of kon)
Zero to Hero - Hercules
So many Lana Del Rey and MARINA songs...
#im SO NORMAL ABOUT HIM GUYS AAAAAAAAAAAh#TY FOR ALL THESE BANGER SONGS#kontent#kon el#clam answers#dc#sorry for my ramble#corn-fish#song tag

i made a desertduo playlist and then decided to be a nerd and write explanations for all the songs! like a nerd!
playlist link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5ZGylutQpyTbgX7MY7Lrzz?si=t8_kBwBHSYG5kxTvZoIrTQ&dl_branch=1
QUICK DISCLAIMER: i am aware that a lot of these songs may have or imply romantic connotation! i would really really like it if these were not read as though those romantic connotations carry over to scar and grian. even if weāre just talking about the third life characters, i would prefer not to ship them or imply romance between them on this post. thank you so much and keep reading if youād like to see the playlist analysis!
and now that thatās out of the way, PLAYLIST TIME!
ā¢
passerine- the oh hellos
āyou were the song that iād always sing/you were the light that the fire would bring/but i canāt shake this feeling that i/was only pushing the spear into your side againā
this song really just... firstly, itās one of my favorite songs, and the line i chose there pushes home the sort of terrified devotion i think the desert has. plus thereās a fun line about the cold wind blowing in from the north in the ending bits that i think very much fits their conflict with the red army, and a lot of legally obligated flight imagery that i need to have in every possible song because iām a fuckin nerd.
ā¢
no children- the mountain goats
āi hope that our few remaining friends/give up on trying to save us/i hope we come up with a failsafe plot to piss off the dumb few that forgave usā
i will admit that no children isnāt a perfect fit, but the general vibe of sort of defiant pessimism and betrayal fits very well with them! itās very triumphant in its death, and i think that is very desertcore, because whatās more triumphantly dead than being the last duo left alive?
ā¢
skulls- bastille
āwhen all of our friends are dead and just a memory/itās always been just you and me/for all to seeā
okay like this entire song is SO MUCH DESERT VIBES? LIKE SO MUCH. if i were to ever make an animatic for them iād do it with this song. āa match is our only light, itās day of the dead iām indiana jones, yeah,ā āi hope you can make me laugh six feet under when weāre bored of each other,ā āi donāt want to rest in peace, iād rather be the ghost that annoys you,ā IT JUST KEEPS GOING. i think this song would work well with any third life duo, honestly, but these two in PARTICULAR just because of how it ended with them literally āburiedā next to each other, and again, the chaotic death vibes.
ā¢
freaking out- mystery skulls
āi just keep out of my tongue/til all you want is done/and you just wanna leave me, oh yeahā
this song is a very third life grian song to me in particular! it could be my bias because of my little headcanon of grian burning on his red life, but seriously, this song is very reminiscent of the back and forth of loyalty that grian has with scar. the above line is sort of representative of the betrayal on red, and of course grianās life debt.
ā¢
night running- shin sakiura
(this song is in japanese! these lyrics are the rough english translation i found on google.) āsomeday we will stand at this place once again/for sure we will stand up again and again/we will watch it will the end/i want you to live freelyā
this song is actually the ending theme for the anime bna, which i adore, and i just added it on a whim before looking at the translated lyrics. but um. holy hell the lyrics hurt me because theyāre about running in search of someone, running for no reason, looking for something, and it just really hit, because the desert never really had a goal! they didnāt expect to survive, they were trying to survive, but what was their longterm goals? nothing. so that sort of endless search felt fitting for this. plus the song is a parallel for the two estranged best friends of the show so! perfect.
ā¢
summer nights- siames
āitās summertime/singing al green in your car/heading to a party/and the night air feels aliveā
okay again, i will admit this song is mainly on here because i absolutely love it, but i also do think it fits well. itās also about healing/estranged friendships, with a very distinct feeling of nostalgia for a happier time. maybe for a time when this was all a game, when there was no blood or betrayals on their hands. little canon divergent, but itās fun for me, so into the playlist it goes!
allies or enemies- the crane wives
āare we allies or enemies/this will be the death of me, this will be the death of me/allās fair in love and war but i canāt fight with you anymoreā
. i just. points to that lyric. it literally led to both of their deaths. are they allies or enemies? it also fits with scar still wanting grian to be his friend even after heās no longer indebted with the line āwhat happens now? do we have another go, do we bow out?ā another very good animatic song that iāve considered heavily. i listen to this playlist a lot
ā¢
burn him down- kitsch club
āyou must destroy, oh you must destroy, beyond all recognition/you gotta burn him down, you gotta burn him down, beyond all recognitionā
this song just has a lot of fire and arson and high energy vibes. my little war criminals look at them go
ā¢
rose- the oh hellos
āwhat's true is like a sickle/it'll cut you to the middle/your rose is without a thorn/but no, my mouth don't taste of metal/from the pot here to the kettle/i think we got a lot we gotta learnā
this one is like the exact opposite vibe of burn him down. the oh hellos are so poetic and this song just... feels like the healing potions after a battle. many of the metaphors here fit, i think
ā¢
lone digger- caravan palace
āhey, brother, what you thinking/that good ol' sound is ringing/they don't know what they're missing/(they call it lonely diggin')ā
okay this song is straight up just a dance song. i added it because i like it and also for some reason it feels ominous to me? iāve got no idea why, itās seriously just a club song, but itās a banger and itās in this playlist because i said so
ā¢
feed the machine- poor manās poison (suggested by my friend argonaughtkeene!)
āsomethinās goinā on, just look around/fear is on the rise, and thereās blood all over the ground/letās all just blindfold the poor, we all know whatās in store/ we got āem now, just break āem down a little bit moreā

āi hold hands with cosmic entities/iāll take this two-ride if i please/i got this sweet tooth baby, yeah i got this sweet tooth baby/i exploit my opportunities/some broken hearts, some cavitiesā
sweet tooth is super upbeat and bright with these strangely dark lyrics? like iām pretty sure itās about addiction. in any case, i thought the āi hold hands with cosmic entitiesā very funnily fitting for both of the desert boys. itās a banger!
ā¢
necromancinā dancinā- bear ghost
āwhen iām necromancinā, everyoneās dancinā/nobody can stop me, i dare you to try/the dead are infused with insatiable groove and theyāre coming for you, thereās nowhere to hideā
necromancinā dancinā just. bastard vibes. thereās not much more to say itās just huge villain song vibes. i adore it.
ā¢

ā¢
drunk- the living tombstone
āfeel so much better than usual/i feel indisputable, oh/but now iām feeling so beautiful/donāt wake me up from this spell iām under, if iām still breathing/i know that i will be ugly when i feel like myself again, oh/but right now iām feelinā so beautifulā
the descent of this song, starting off with a polite gathering and ending with a gasping drunk in the parking lot gazing at the stars that he can barely see? yes. yeah. mhm. i used a line from this song for a fic, actually, it fit so well.
ā¢
oh no!- marina
āone track mind, one track heart/if i fail, iāll fall apart/maybe it is all a test/cos i feel like iām the worst so i always act like iām the bestā
bubbly pop track about false confidence, the ruthlessness of the pop industry, and the influence of the media? you know why this is here. it vibes. it rocks.
ā¢
do it all the time- i donāt know how but they found me
āweāre taking over the world/a little victimless crime/and when iām taking your innocence/iāll be corrupting your mind/no need to cry iām only doing everything i want to do because i do it all the timeā
EVEN MORE BASTARD VIBES! SOMEHOW THERE IS MORE! this playlist is half villain songs and half heart-wrenching ballads and thatās the real desert experience i think.
ā¢
the phoenix- fall out boy
āiām gonna change you/like a remix/then iāll raise you/like the phoenixā
BATTLE SONG BATTLE SONG! iāll be honest i partially chose this song because i am a huge sucker for phoenix grian imagery in particular, but itās also just a very good war song for them. villain song no 18372948 except this one originally had a hero vibe and now itās changed specifically for them?? wild. their power
ā¢
the other side- the greatest showman
āright here, right now/iāll put the offer out/i donāt wanna chase you down, i know you see it/you run with me/and i can cut you free/out of the treachery/and all you keep inā
scar and grianās desert monopoly conversation went exactly like this canonically because i said so fuck you <3
ā¢
icicles- the scary jokes (suggested by my friend demizorua!)
āicicles donāt soften when they die/so why should i, why should i?/oh, icicles donāt soften when they die/they sharpen into sabers and they stab you in the eyeā
this song actually has specific parts for both grian and scar! my cool epic friend mx demizorua pointed both of them out to me and i adored it so much. itās a very spiteful song, just like the desert boys. also it feels vaguely murderous. perfect
ā¢
problems- mother mother (suggested by my friend demizorua!)
āiām a loser, a disgrace/youāre a beauty, a luminary, in my faceā

ā¢
youāre nobody til somebody wants you dead- saint motel
āyouāre nobody til somebody wants you dead/and the list, it grows, and grows, and grows/it grows, and grows, and grows/and grows, and grows, and grows/until itās everyone youāve ever knownā

okay again! this one has two very specific parts for both of them. grianās the first verse, which is above, and scarās the second verse!! i really do like my fire imagery for these two donāt i? well, i blame them for having a fuck ton of tnt on them at all times and literally burning their enemyās banners as a final act of defiance.

hello! are there any songs you associate with any of the kotor characters? (totally not asking bc my brain is hungry for animatic ideas haha,,)
OH BOY DO I HAVE SONGS
first things first, i will direct you to my twelve hour Revan playlist that i use for writing vibes, it's a mixture of vocal and instrumental and it has both a bunch of Revan songs for different eras of Revan, plus revalek songs, plus some revastila songs, plus some songs that just vibe.... it's good and most of the songs i'm about to highlight, if not all of them, are on there already.
NOW. HERE WE GO.
first things first, i need to introduce you to the title song for my mandalorian wars fic, oblivion by the aviators! god, this song doesn't fit all Revans perfectly, but it fits mine so well it was like it'd been written for her specifically, i swear. listening to the song was what inspired me to write the fic to begin with (and now i have a whole series oops). i mean, come on, look at the chorus:
Let the broken heroes rise Let the victors take their prize No one wins when justice dies War has let this age begin It's where we've gone and where they've been What a state that we're in Here in oblivion
can't look at that and tell me that isn't Jedi Knight Revan and the war that broke them.
next up!! liar by the arcadian wild, my beloved. this song is currently my top all time on spotify, closely followed by the song i'm going to rec after it and then achilles come down - and the fact that anything unseated achilles for the top spot should tell you something. (and if you don't know what achilles come down is look it up that one's on my playlist too.) this is a really good one for Revan's slow fall down, the corruption arc - again, all of the songs i'm mentioning really fit my own versions of the characters best, but they're just good in general. some of the lyrics i enjoy from this one:
hnext up, we have it all by pim stones. this particular one feels very revalek to me, early in the Sith years when they still maybe had good intentions, maybe after the war but before becoming Darth. there's this softer, almost desperate tone to the way the singer sings it that just hits me hard - this is the song i'm using as the title for my Sith years interlude fic! a lyric snippet:
All my life I've been heading for hell But never had I thought I'd drag you down as well I just couldn't resist what he was trying to sell
There's glory ahead but our love will be forgotten If my heart was still mine I would go to the bottom And apologise to you until the day it went rotten
next up we have the balancer's eye by lord huron, which is the song i named my series after (have you noticed a trend yet?). it's a very Revan vibe in general, and while i'm not as much of a fan of the style, the lyrics are really excellent!
Nothing's waiting for us in the great sky Life is equal to dust in the balancer's eye Now I know that I can't lift an old curse Tell me, how does a man change the universe?
Will I ever be forgiven for the crime of my life? Will it haunt me 'til I die?
mmm let's see what next. OH! go to war by nothing more. this is just straight up a Sith years song for revalek, whether you ship them or not - they were important to each other either way! ..... i am not going to tangent into yelling about revalek. that is not what this is for. anyway, the song itself is a) a banger and b) talking about love corrupting and falling apart and it just. it hits, man
Do we censor? Do we flow? Are we drunk on the chemicals? Every feeling in my bones Tells me to lash out and tell you to fuck off You've got my heart and I've got your soul But are we better off alone? With every battle we lose a little more Remember everything that we'd die for You are everything that I'd die for
oooh NEXT we have the song i was going to use for my Jaw Scene before i decided to write a full sith years fic. saints by echos is the song, and again, we've got Sith years Revan and Malak here (yes yes i have a type), the vibes of losing faith and anger and it blends really well with how Revan basically played off being a legendary figure to the Republic to fuel their war against it!
You were standing there like an angry god Counting out my sins just to cross them off Saying that my tongue was too loud to trust And that my blood couldn't keep you
My dear, you're not so innocent You're fooling Heaven's gates So you won't have to change You're no saint, you're no savior
mmmm okay the discord has informed me that ten (10) songs is the maximum i should do in one post so. i will only do four more. chrysalis - the last breath by delain is yet another Sith Revan and Malak song and honestly you can read it as a response to the song above, if you think of saints from Malak's pov and chrysalis from Revan's, they mesh really well together.
Hey, are you still mad? About the time We almost went too far I know your regrets In my defense; By now, it's just a scar That distracts you from Your broken heart Like you wanted it to do How do you feel? I don't... How do you know? You won't... To let go of you I will try Until my last breath How do you feel? I don't... How do you know? You won't... To let go I promise I will fight
next! for a complete change of pace, i have a revastila song for you - warrior by beth crowley. it somehow manages to capture exactly the dynamic i think of in my head when i think about Bastila, the uncertainty, the forbiddeness of it, but the way Revan ultimately strengthens her and she strengthens Revan
You fascinated me Cloaked in shadows and secrecy The beauty of a broken angel
I ventured carefully Afraid of what you thought I'd be But pretty soon, I was entangled
You take me by the hand I question who I am
uhhhhhh i am desperately trying to think of songs that aren't just about Revan but instead here i am with another Mandalorian Wars Revan song, what did we know by rachel rose mitchell! this song was introduced to me by the same friend who sent me oblivion, and it really captures the fall of the Mandalorian wars incredibly well imo - the way it started with righteousness but ended in pain (compassion leading to destruction and that's a ramble i'm not going on here either), and there's this line in there that i'm not including in my snippet that's what scares me more than anything / if we could choose the past / we'd probably choose the same and it's like. yes! that's it! i'm going to once again go insane over the scene in the Korriban tomb in kotor 2!!! knowing the price.... would you choose to do it all again........ aaaaaaaa
It's been so long since we began. It seems so long ago That in the name of loyalty We started on our own. Answering the call of a house we once called home, We knew that we were right. What did we know?
We swore that we understood this wasn't a game, But somehow we found ourselves fanning the flames. Those who cautioned and abandoned us, they were the same. I saw them turn away.
the final song i'm doing is the song i used when i wrote the Betrayal scene from Malak's pov, the little things give you away by linkin park. this one just. it vibes, it vibes hard, goes really into the actual grief of betrayal, and also has a super epic instrumental solo so there's that. as usual, lyric snippet:
Don't want to reach for me, do you? I mean nothing to you The little things give you away But now there will be no mistaking The levees are breaking
All you've ever wanted Was someone to truly look up to you And six feet under water, I do
All you've ever wanted Was someone to truly look up to you And six feet underground now I Now I do
god okay now that you're completely overwhelmed and never want to talk to me again....... i should've probably put this under a readmore but eh. thanks for the ask!
#asked and answered#my revan playlist#there is literally so much music on here#i make up animatics in my head so#you sent this ask in and i sent it to the discord like#what's up i'm about to overwhelm this poor person who just started following me#please don't regret interacting with me#oh i should probably tag this as#long post

Okay, thanks! I think the hypeās calmed down a bit, but Iāve still got stuff in mind. Spoilers ahead for a few plot points in both the AU and in a couple of different Hunchback things.
Of course, weāve got both sides of āOut Thereā to consider first. During the Frollo/Judge Glitch half, Agoniaās glow dims down a lot as soon as the judge opens his mouth. Not to the point where you canāt see it, of course, but itās very faint. Even when the perspective shifts to where we can see and hear Agonia repeating the words back. He is absolutely upset about these ideas, though all Glitch sees is begrudging resignation.
Then, once Glitch leaves, Agonia regains his glow. Itās a slow start throughout the first half of Quasimodoās/his own section, but itās in full brightness by the time we hit the main chorus. And Iām talking absolute violet afterglow from head to toe here. His voice is a lot more like what weāre used to as well, but thatās not what Iām discussing here.
Meanwhile, in Topsy-Turvy, his afterglow is basically in its usual state (most likely because he doesnāt want to be caught or else itād be a lot brighter) until the King of Fools event. Then it goes from weak due to the stress of accidentally terrifying everyone to the first external full-on shine after he gets crowned. Of course, that doesnāt last long..
Heavenās Light is an interesting case. Through this song (here sung as a lullaby for Gregory), heās singing about his face not being fit for Heavenās light.. All while his glow is softly giving enough light for Gregory to sleep in the dark bell tower. I canāt tell if thatās sad irony or Iām just overthinking that it is.
Lifting from the musical for a moment, letās jump alll the way to Made of Stone. There have definitely been moments where the guyās afterglow has darkened considerably outside of these songs. No doubt about it.
But believe me when I say that thisā This exact numberā is what prompted me to mention what happens if that glow is pretty much extinguished. His inner voice breaks down, his afterglow is pretty much a glimmer, and his mind is so self-loathing and scrambled that he feels like he has to control inactive animatronics that are tethered to him by wires in order to get his point across.
And when we reach the ever-so-beloved climax of that song, heās not interested in sounding decent. His aim is to make sure his mind is shut off and his emotions are dead. He lets his voice reach that part as ābestā as it can while the wires leech off his ghostly energy, then collapses to the floor during the last note. If I were giving artist notes about an animatic with this guy for that song in particular, my only request is that the scene pretty much gets visually darker and darker until his glow fades out at the last orchestral thump. Like that one old animated movie trope where the last thing to fade in a particular shot is a villainās eyes, but with that manās entire ghostly being.
...Sorry if I went a bit too passionate near the end there. Just had a lot to say about Made of Stone in particular. It honestly gets my animatic brain spinning.
Anyway.. Youāll be happy to know that while the songs technically end there, the story itself doesnāt. Though Ruin has every (understandable) opportunity to derail this, I will say that Agonia does get his glow back shortly after this song. Itās through an unintentional wake-up call, but it gets the job done.
...But everything after that I wonāt spoil. Youāll have to wait until I actually write that chapter to see what happens. Thankfully, we both shouldnāt have to wait long.
Oh snap.
I just realized that thereās been an opportunity for visual storytelling in the Notre Dame AU and I donāt think Iāve implied this at all.
Hear me out.
The purple afterglow Agonia has is a good thing here. It shows that heās a bit more hopeful than heās ever been ever since ā83. Literally glowing with life (or something) despite his circumstances.
The brightest moments when he glows is either when heās with his family or when his mind gets wrapped up in something he used to enjoy. Figuring out codes in the Pizzaplex system or having internal monologues being pretty good examples.
That glow dulls whenever Glitchtrap is around. Or, even worse, whenever those thoughts he drills into his mind fester and take a hold of it.
If that light goes out completely, then consider him dead. Not literally, of course, but itās still a serious thing.

Mystery Box: An Introduction to Animatics
In this weekās animatic masterclass, we were introduced to the idea of an animatic as a way to plan our animations. Whilst we had the opportunity to create our own animatic, I first wanted to delve into the use of animatics in the industry of animation, looking at a few examples and the purpose they serve in the production of an animated sequence. This isnāt in response to any points from Helen herself, who simply gave us the task and how to produce it in the given software, but instead, this post is an opportunity for me to develop my own independent research into the use of animatics in animation.
What is an Animatic? Last week, we explored the idea of storyboards, and how these hand-drawn frames can show the stages of a scene in rough camera placements. Here, issues with the story can be fixed easily, and allow the director/s to tell if the story is clear and works as a visual narrative. However, storyboards cannot tell us the timing or pacing of the sequence. To do that, editors and artists take the storyboard panels and translate them into an animatic.
In its most basic form, an animatic is a collection of static storyboards edited together into a sequence. Using an editing package, we are able to put the storyboards into a timeline and see how the timing works for the animation, even adding cuts and camera movements which are often timed to any dialogue or music that will be used in the final product.
Similar to storyboards, animatics are used to bridge the gap between an idea and a finished animation. We need to see how it might feel, and āget more of a graspā of the scene. In contrast to storyboards, animatics are very particular to animation. They are a way to layout the timing, pacing and the visuals of the entire thing without having to create it in animation. Animatics are used to get the flow of camera work, pacing and characters interactions. Typically, the sketches in animatics are rough and instead focus on timing and pacing, rather than appealing illustrations.
Industry Practices In an illuminating video revealing the entire CG animation pipeline at Dreamworks Studios, lead editor Nick Fletcher explains the process in a way better than I ever could, simply because itās his job to create animatics for Dreamworksā feature films.Ā
āWe take the storyboard panels and build a sequence out of those. Some times, we donāt have any dialogue, so we record ourselves doing the voices. We add a little music, sound effects and whatever is needed to fully tell the story. Try to make it as polished as possible so that the storyboard reel [or animatic] becomes a sort of foundation for the movie.āĀ
Nick Fletcher, Editor and Animatic Creator for Dreamworks
In this early stage, the actors havenāt yet recorded their performances, so the editors effectively produce a rough pass as a way to present a preliminary vision of the film to directors, producers and executives, who will then green light the project to the next stage if they like what they see.
Interestingly, the inclusion of sound is a characteristic of almost every animatic Iāve come across, whether it be for a feature film animation or fan-made short on Youtube. Sound is a key part of producing an exciting and engaging animated film, and itās not something that I want to disregard for this project either. When filming my own reference, I had the opportunity to verbally act out the performance and as such, Iāve essentially already got a rough audio track for my animatic, if I choose to include it. Despite the fact that sound isnāt mentioned in the brief, I feel like it could only be a good idea to include this aspect as a way to again push the limitations of this assignment and produce a piece of work that is of an industry standard: this is something that I want to consider when creating my own animatic.
With animatics, the drawings are often loose and sketchy: the focus is on telling the story and simply working out the timing and pacing of the sequence. A common industry practice of both storyboards and animatics is the use of spot colours or shading to simply separate the background and foreground, rendering the main characters in a shade of grey different to the background and foreground elements to direct the eye to the most important information and focal points of the shot. In my own animatic, I plan to produce a sketched version using simple line work and develop upon this by adding a grey tonal value to each of the elements as a way to evidence an understanding of key industry practices.
One final aspect to consider when creating an animatic is the program itself. After doing a little bit of digging online, Iāve found that the industry standard for animatic production is a combination of Adobe Photoshop to draw the frames and to sequence them using After Effects or Premiere Pro, both of which allow us to add cinematic touches and camera movements in this early stage. Already, Iāve had the opportunity to explore the use of virtual cameras within After Effects, and I can see the potential for more complex shot types and camera movements to be created simply using this technique of changing 2D illustrations into 3D flat objects that a virtual camera can then move around to give the illusion of depth.
Into the Spider-Verse: A Cinematic Approach This idea of a cinematic approach to animatics, making use of more complex shots even at this early stage in production, can be seen in Alberto Mielgoās initial animatics for the massively successful Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Mielgo created the tests using the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, drawing with pencil and digitally in Photoshop, and compositing the sketches in After Effects before doing any final editing in Premiere.
The shots are intensely cinematic, presenting a new vision of a hand-drawn, 3D world. This example represents a more complex approach to an animatic, as Mielgo presents an inherently cinematic, hand-drawn 3D world. Through panning virtual cameras and zooms through converted 2D illustrations, the audience is able to get a sense of the scale of the film and the city of Brooklyn. Looking at these animatics, thereās a clear understanding of editing and cinematography here, with a mix of blurred lenses, fades and cuts that outline the overall look and feel of the final film.
Here, Mielgo was creating key moments and shot compositions that the final film still adheres to, with his initial animatics playing a key role in establishing the filmās stylistic visual language and a new, snappy approach to animation. The idea to use comic book panels, illustrated onomatopoeia and an experimental approach to composition was the work of Mielgoās early development in the project, and within these, we can see how an animatic can be used to plan out the action not only in terms of layout and timing, but also the visual language of the film and even more editing elements such as how to cut a shot.
Gorilliaz: Animatics in Music Videos Animatics can also be found outside of the realm of animated feature films, however. For example, we can take a look at an animatic from the legendary animated band Gorillaz, an experiment blending animation and a genre-bending array of musical tastes that has become a world-wide hit since they first dropped their debut single in 2001, with āClint Eastwoodā. The song and music video are one and the same, each working to build off the other, and exemplifies the bandās use of mixing musical styles: combining hip hop, electronic and dubstep influences to defy musical genre, and instead embrace storytelling.
In the animatic for āClint Eastwoodā, we can see how the creators were able to pre-visualise their sequence by moving the camera around the 2D illustrations, which instantly gives the flat designs a sense of depth and cinematic charm. The slow arcing motion of each of the band members is shown clearly in the animatic, a shot that is now iconic to the band itself. Itās important to note that for the more complex moves, still images of the characters are used to act as visual place holders for the animation. With this example, the focus is on getting that smooth arcing camera movement, and focusing on each singular band member, and as such are represented with still frames. This is a common industry practice, and as such, animatics typically have little actual animation. Rather than a series of frames to create the illusion of movement, an animatic presents the action across a series of storyboarded panels that convey the motion through rough drawings.
Something interesting to note about this particular animatic is the varied use of mediums that creates a very tactical effect that hammers home to the audience that these sequences are created by hand. In a music video, one important element is the use of lip-synching early on - and as such, the animatic presents a nearly fully-animated lip-sync, animated traditionally on paper. This allows the animators a more considered and polished visualisation of the sequence to work from, and since it is a focal point of the video, it seems natural to want to develop upon this early on in the project.
Looking at the animatic, we can see how the creators have used a mix of near-fully animated sequences and moving still images to convey the story of the video. With more complex shots including detailed landscapes and multiple characters, only a handful of frames are shown - but itās enough for the directors and creators to work from. In these more dynamic compositions, the characters are rendered with simple stick-figure bodies, taking the focus away from staying on model and more on sketching the shot and timing correct.
Additionally, the animatic also uses a range of camera effects to give the illusion of depth to these 2D characters, using a shaky cam to demonstrate a character jumping and slamming down onto the ground or arcing pan-up movements that evoke a real sense of cinematic composition and camera work - going beyond the traditional animation approach. It was quite interesting to see how the editors would recycle animations and shots for the video, allowing creators to save time using cycle animations for certain shots. Comparing these animatics to the final shots demonstrates how crucial and helpful the animatic is to a project like this: despite the colours, final polish and smooth animation, the sequence has effectively stayed to the initial compositions and camera movements outlined in the animatic.
Summary In this post, Iāve been able to explore the use of animatics in the animation industry, taking the time to delve into some examples that I personally find inspiring and exciting, and how these ultimately outline the final feature. As an animator, creating an animatic is interestingly something that Iāve never actually done before. However, I can really see a benefit and the purpose of doing so - and with this, my next move is to take the ideas that Iāve found here and apply them in my own creative practice: developing my own animatic based on my final storyboard.

Wednesday Roundup 11.10.2017
Itās that time of a week again where I prove to be nothing if not a complete glutton for punishment, which apparently includes having way too many trades preordered on the same week by magical coincidence. Itās like the old saying, when it rain it pours. And sometimes itās just ridiculous.Ā
But weāre seeing the closing a few storylines, the beginning of a few, and just a general large array of comics at our disposal, including more of the Marvel Primers. So I say we just dig right into it.Ā
Marvelās All-New Wolverine, Marvelās Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, DCās Batgirl and the Birds of Prey,Ā Marvelās Captain America,Ā Marvelās Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvelās Immortal Iron Fists,Ā DCās New Super-Man, Imageās Rat Queens,Ā DCās Red Hood and the Outlaws, Marvelās Runaways,Ā Marvelās Spider-Man: Miles Morales, IDWās Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe
Marvelās All-New Wolverine (2015-present) #25 Tom Taylor, Juann Cabal, Nolan Woodard
Will I ever run out of good things to say about All-New Wolverine? No? Good. I wouldnāt want to be dishonest and that would be the only way Iād have negative things to say about my love for this series.
Story: So believe it or not, the relationship between Daken and Laura is something I have desperately wanted to see more of. In the Daken/X-23 crossover they had a few years ago, I really felt like we got somewhere with their relationship, and the bits and pieces since then have really helped my attitude only grow stronger on the subject. So seeing Taylor hint at it growing more in the last arc, and knowing it would be delivered on in this arc has me SO excited about what is to come.Ā
You know. When Daken is around for more than an awesome bar fight that... leads to his dismembered arm being hung from a bridge. THAT old plot device. Iām a little sad to see that Gabby is being left behind (especially since her outfits never cease being adorable and hilarious) but knowing that weāre dealing with Mutant Bigots this time around somewhat made me appreciate that decision. I worry way too much about Gabby to take that at face value.
And then that cliffhanger hits like a freight train and itās like WHAAAAT. But no like what. Oh my god. Is this real? I know we have to wait a month but. uh. Kudos, Tom Taylor. I am not often surprised by characters seemingly returning from the dead anymore. To say this was not expected is VASTLY underplaying my shock.
Art: There have been a lot of great artists on this title and I donāt think Juann Cabal is an exception to that rule. He has solid character art, lots of good control of backgrounds and paneling, and got pretty inventive with combining flashbacks with Lauraās current travels and actions. And the bar scene with Daken was just fantastic all around like, a simple but highly effective action sequence and Iām really excited to see what action heāll draw Laura herself in as we carry on.Ā
Marvelās Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows (2016-present) #12 Ryan Stegman, Brian Level, Jesus Aburtov
We wrap up another storyline of what has quickly become my favorite Spidey series of theĀ ā10s and it comes with highest of highs and lowest of lows. And lots and lots of adorable hugs.
Story: I was concerned that with the pacing we had had for this storyline up to this point that there would be a lot of things that would have to be knitted together a bit too tight or not at all, and that definitely seemed to be the case. We flew through this issue with revelations hitting in waves. Ms. January was the villain all along, Normie is suddenly a perfectly normal kid who was just misled, the symbiote is removed from MJ using sonic waves, Annie saves her parents, and just overall there was a lot that happened within this single comic. It all made emotional sense, and the hug between Annie and Normie at the end, bringing their family feud at last to an end, felt completely right.Ā
I liked small callouts like having Liz be the parent Normie needed, the X-Men coming to help the Parker family, and the amazing banter between MJ and Peter, but I think because there was so much fit into this last issue there felt like a bit of continuity bending to make logical sense where the emotions didnāt quite carry us. Like Normieās... complete change in character. And Ms. Januaryās apparent obsession/love of Harry and need to avenge him. These things make sense if they fed into each other -- Ms. Januaryās influence inspiring Normie to cut his mother out of his life even more than she had been already and then feeding him more and more hatred toward Spider-Man by saying that it was his fault. But that doesnāt make so much sense with what we read in the issues before, specifically the issue where Normie took up arms to protect his company and revealed his backstory through his own internal monologue and flashbacks.Ā
So while this confrontation has been 12 issues in the build up, the resolution mostly came... only from this issue. Maybe the last two issues, too, if weāre being generous.Ā
The epilogue confuses me. It feels like Renew Your Vows is trying to wrap itself up and yet I know from solicits that itās not, but we are justifying a timeskip to eight years in the future so that artists have an excuse to draw a teenage girl in a tighter costume --Ā I MEAN BECAUSE THEY WANT TO TELL MORE TEEN ORIENTED STORIES OBVIOUSLY. But I worry that this change is going to make what has been a unique take on the Parker-Watson family and turn it into Sider-Girl Lite, which is unfair to everyone all around. Also were they... not operating for those eight years? Why is the new costume a big deal for her eighteenth birthday? How much sense would it make for them to just... suddenly find a way to stop Annie from going out as a superhero with them when the whole point of the past 12 issues is that they couldnāt.Ā
What about Dr. Connors and his son? What about Annieās additional precognitive powers? Did she end up going to the Xavier institute?Ā
I feel like I was asked to bite off a bit too much in this issue, and as much as I enjoyed it and enjoyed this series, I feel this is a rare storyline where I actually would have preferred an extra issue to set all of this up.
Art: The art is beautiful. Soft and textured but also sweeping and animatic like you would want for any good Spidey story. And considering that there has been a fair rotation of art teams on this book since the first issue, I really appreciate how much they worked toward giving the book a consistent style of its own. It was neat and helped even artist style changes feel coherent still and Iām really interested to see if this dedication to that continues, especially since the epilogue appeared to have a different feel to it.Ā
Itāll be interesting to see next month either way.Ā
DCās Batgirl and the Birds of Prey (2016-present) #15 Julie Benson, Shawna Benson, Roge Antonio, Marcelo Maiolo
Well, Iām sure for 99% of you this is an unexpected addition to the roster. For those unaware, I have put the first volume of Batgirl and the Birds of Prey on blast on my personal blog @renaroo for having some things I consider to be insufferable in regards to the handling of Barbara and specifically the consistent villainization of Oracle. Which you know, Iām about sick of.Ā
So why am I picking up BoP now? Simple: Cass is going to start appearing regularly beginning with this particular storyline and I will support her here since for finances Iāve had to moveĀ āTec to trade wait.Ā
and oh boy. This is. Something.
Story: So thereās this old episode of the animated Justice League series where an Amazon OC standing in for Donna Troy unleashed a plague on Earth that only affected men and it was putting all men in comas and the such and it left the only two women of a seven-person Justice League because of course there were only two women to deal with it and save the world... well half of it. It was broad strokes of feminism as written by men which included Diana being the strawwoman feminist who couldnāt understand if losing men (including her friends???) would doom society and Hawkgirl being the relatable cool egalitarian alien bird woman to be allĀ āguuurrrrrlllll you need to respect men moreā. Itās like. The episode i remember the most from my childhood and I hate it with the burning passion of a thousand suns.Ā
Apparently Iām not the only one who remembers it however because that... that is the plot of this storyline. I donāt know why they couldnāt just bring back the ebola plague from Batman: Contagion which was a legitimately good storyline I like but weāre doing the... gender specific plague.Ā
Are they going to address trans men and women? How is this disease preying specifically on men? Is it magical in origin and that why it follows no rules? Why is Lois here? Is Wonder Woman here just because of that Justice League episode?Ā
I donāt know.Ā
I appreciate that we didnāt waste a whole lot of time with Batwomanās squad duking it out with Babsgirlās squad over whether or not antiheroes who.... one of which sheās worked with before and... another of which she knows for a fact is... engaged to her cousin. But whatever. Also Steph in her post-Belfry uniform is... going along with this okay. Iām picking too much but thereās a lot of what in those four pages.
I do appreciate that the dialogue seemed to match everyoneās character very well, and Oliver and Dinah were hysterical and lovable together. .... But damn is it difficult to wrap my head around Babsā character anymore. Like literally falling to her knees and tearing up begging Poison Ivy (who she was friends with in the previous BoP???? which is sitll canon bc they bring it up???) to help becauseĀ āpeople she lovesā are affected by the disease like. Itās the antithesis of the Babs I knew and was familiar with and admired in the day but. I guess thatās the Babs we have now. And Iām just... supposed to roll with it I guess.Ā
Also enjoyed Helena being a teacher again, that was awesome. Even if her calling up Dick instead of Babs was... still difficult to process but whatever.Ā
Art: Itās good! Really consistent, the lineart was sometimes a little softer than I prefer, but there were varied bodytypes and lots of good action sequences handled concisely enough that it didnāt feel like panel space was wasted. I really enjoyed it overall.
Marvelās Captain America - Marvel Legacy Primer Page Robbie Thompson, Valerio Schiti
I have been pretty vocal in my disdain for how Marvel has handled Cap for the last two years and I join pretty much everyone in a chorus ofĀ āhow can you misunderstand something so badā but at the same time Iām... just tired. And itās hard to even be excited at the fact that the reign of Spencer is over because it feels like the enjoyment and interest Iāve felt for Cap for all this time is simply used up. which is why a primer like this is really something that I needed. I needed to see a reminder that Cap punches Nazis and Hydra and Marvel -- or at least some people at Marvel remember that still. I donāt want that history gone, cosmic cubed or otherwise. And given Waid and Samneeās interviews it seems theyāre going to push for just that.Ā
Hereās hoping they accomplish it because even these three pages of Cap acting like Cap again was enough to make me smile at least a little.Ā
Marvelās Guardians of the Galaxy - Marvel Legacy Primer Page Robbie Thompson, Marcus To
If I was going for snark and snark alone here I would begin and end this withĀ āwhy is Scott Lang hereā because no really why is Scott Lang with the Guardians of the Galaxy. And itās something I shouldnāt be asking because I really have still -- even in liking the movies as much as I do -- not found myself any more persuaded to read into the space opera stuff over at Marvel. Itās just not something I want in my life right now.Ā
Marcus Toās art is very nice, though, and usually worth it on its own. Even if Iām beginning to notice a touch of samefaceness in the art style At least itās a very pretty face.Ā
Marvelās Immortal Iron Fists (2017) #6 (of 6) Kaare Andrews, Afu Chan, Shelly Ghen
Immortal Iron Fists has come to an end and Iām both saddened and yet incredibly enthusiastic about how everything turned out!
Story: So I feel like it should not have taken the better part of 5 issues for me learn that Pei and her friends are sixteen and not... middle schoolers despite how they were drawn and how they acted as way way younger than that. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that... itās not that theyāre drawn or written younger, itās that itās that unusual to find an American comic that actually shows teenagers appropriately and that helped me gain a whole new respect for a series that I was already very much enjoying.
Everyone coming together and remembering Pei for the impact we have seen her make in their lives, Pei fully realizing her power as Iron Fist, and the general fun of a huge climactic battle that was a three way fight between Pei, demons, and the Mother of All Dragons is probably one of the most bombastic that can be asked for. And I love that Brenda made a comeback after her truly terrible exit from the finale of Immortal Iron Fist under Andrews, but at the same time donāt... really care for how it wasnāt set until last issue.Ā
All the positives of this story almost make me overlook the unnecessary, though appreciably subverted, kiss of life Pei gives her guy friend and I love that Danny, man serial dater that he is, is flumexed by this turn of events.Ā
Everything is fun and delightful and I really really appreciate how dedicated this comic was from beginning to end to be Peiās story and not letting that focus escape it the entirety of the six issues.Ā
Also Brenda flying off on the Mother of All Dragons at the end and being like stfu Danny you ruined a good thing was hysterical and I loved it.
Art: There was definitely more production in this finale There seemed to be a lot more variation in coloring and textures, and even the characters seemed to keep almost perfectly on model the entire time. The one distraction of note, though, was that Pei... developed more into a traditional teenager look by the end... by which I mean.... boobs are now a thing and Iām not sure if it was just that she wore thicker clothes throughout the story or if it was because much like myself, the art team realized last issue for the first time that Pei was a sixteen year old and not... twelve. Anyway. It was a little distracting, but the increase in panel variation and high number of action sequences definitely made the story far more fulfilling in my view.Ā
DCās New Super-Man (2016-present) Vol. 2: Coming to America Gene Luen Yang, Billy Tan, Viktor Bogdanovic
After what felt like a long wait, we join Kenan and the rest of the Justice League of China once more on a bombastic quest as written by Gene Luen Yang. And much like last time, the results are rather unexpected and honestly kind of remarkable.
Story: Going off of my experiences with Yangās work, I really feel like his passion in storytelling lies in finding the balance between the question of identity and how identity is formed by the cultures that nurtured us and how it is formed by the influences of the cultures around us. I think that was the main focus of American Born Chinese but it really is beginning to shine through Kenanās adventures here as the New Super-Man and how much of the titularās character is being drawn from the two huge influences he is feeling -- the pressures and dangers of the Chinese government and culture, and the admiration and sometimes oppressive shadows of the American culture that he is both attempting to copy as Super-Man and attempting to circumvent by finding the focus of his powers in Chinese philosophies and values.Ā
And I think thatās where his supporting cast -- Wonder-Woman and Bat-Man and now also Avery Hoās take on the Flash -- are really coming into play. While Kenan is being torn back and forth by his responsibilities and his bombastic self-absorption both in his internal conflict and his external conflict of learning the truth of his parents, we are getting a broader exposure to what being a superhero in China means as opposed to the normalcy weāve come to expect from Western comics.Ā
Bat-Man is just as influenced by his family as Batman, but the pressures are more in the focus on building his exceptionalism and in differing from his sister on whether to stay within a system that robs children of their childhoods and individuals of their sense of self, or to find purpose within that system and excel based upon the traits which only he can bring.Ā
Wonder-Woman, like Wonder Woman, is derived from myth and legend but instead of a Western legacy, it is purely Chinese and her alienation and stand offish nature initially toward the rest of her team only makes that much more sense given what has brought her to her current state. She is a myth, a legend herself, but she is nearly forgotten by the current times -- Kenan even has to be told the story of her origins by Bat-Man -- and her finding the will to fit into a China that is so influenced by external cultures and influences are a struggle weāre only now beginning to appreciate.Ā
And finally, with Flash, a Chinese-American, weāre going to receive yet another wild perspective, and considering Kenanās already developing friendship with Avery I imagine that this is a perspective that will only receive more focus in stories to come. And I perceive that Yangās inclinations to reference the struggles of culture and self-identity are going to be explored further here.
All around i greatly enjoyed this volume and am looking forward to the continuation now that Kenan has finally learned the truth about his family. There are a lot of interesting new angles to explore and I hope we do just that.
Art: The art is really reminiscent of Greg Capulloās run on Batman, but has a whole lot more color and variety breathed into it which I personally really appreciate. The colors do a good job of presenting the differences in everyoneās base personalities and also makes the action sequences easier to follow even as the action itself becomes increasingly complex. The page layouts were fairly reserved considering the DC standard lately, but I personally appreciated it because it kept the focus on the storytelling and in doing so enhanced the nuances therein.Ā
Great work all around, and yet another enjoyable volume.Ā
Imageās Rat Queens (2013-present) Vol. 4: High Fantasies Kurtis J. Wiebe, Owen Gieni, Ryan Ferrier
I only recently jumped on the barge for Rat Queens and Iāve been more than happy with the results of caving to the advice of many friends. Because what is better than female-full cast of hilarious and dramatic DnD like adventures with more swearing than a naval ship? I gotta say, not much!
Story: So compared to the previous volumes, I actually found High Fantasies to feel like it had a lot less at stake. Although part of that may just be that I was somewhat anticipating a Betty-centric volume finally to elevate her out of being the shroom eating comic relief and bring more of the assassination attempts and her outlaw past into the forefront. And thatās clearly a problem of my own expectations and not necessarily the storyās fault itself. That said, the focus on Vol. 4 being on a gender bent loser version of the Rat Queens was pretty funny but also not something I would have thought carried enough weight to pivot as the main plot, but that would be just me.Ā
I do appreciate Braga being in a larger role this time around, and really I wish we could see more less human creatures on the roster in general. It was also a huge heartwarming feeling to have Hannah more comfortable around her Queens and even showing some horns now and then in public. It feels like a huge progression of her character, even as she spends a fair amount of time earning the girlsā ire and.... walking in on naked mayors. As you do.
Basically Vol. 4 isnāt as character centric as the previous volumes have been, but it is a great adventure that feels like a good olā fashion DnD campaign with the friends you love at the helm and for fantasy nerds like me thatās more than enough to bring me back into the story.
Art: The art is always spectacular with Rat Queens, but I did findĀ that this volume -- mostly as a result of not going to as many unestablished and important/original locations, did have a significant lack f inventive background use. Thatās not always a slam on art, really the art was very good, and I actually am just... happy to not have Upchurch as the artist, honestly. That alone is worth three and a half gold stars. Though the whole controversy there is still my largest apprehension with the series at this point.Ā
DCās Red Hood and the Outlaws (2016-present) Vol. 2: Who is Artemis? Scott Lobdell, Dexter Soy, Kenneth Rocafort
Okay who authorized this? Who made this comic exist and who made it be actually good?? Because I didnāt and I feel offended at the amount of emotions that were forced upon me in this single volume of a comic written by Scott frigginā Lobdell of all people. You couldnāt have told me a month ago that I would be enjoying anything that was remotely connected to Scott Lobdell and expect me not to laugh hard enough Iād bring myself to tears.Ā
And yet here we are.
Story: Having learned a bit from how lackluster the attempts of balancing the concentration of the narrative was for his previous incarnations of the Outlaws, Lobdell somehow learned how to, yāknow, write an ensemble narrative that is still heavily Jason Toddās perspective, but does not lose any opportunities to expand on or even concentrate on the stories and character development of Bizarro and Artemis. oth of which are shockingly well handled and shockingly controlled, well paced, and interwoven into each otherās stories.Ā
Like legitimately, did someone nab the Lobdell who wrote decent 90s Marvel comics and put him on this project? Because that feels like the kind of bizarre logic that would seem acceptable at this point.
Now, of course, itās not perfect. Far from it. But at the end of the day we got an intriguing ongoing story, a team building exercise, Jasonās internal struggle personified both through his inner monologue and flashbacks, but also moments like his sparing of Bizarro whic not only didnāt have overly wordy exposition bringing attention to it, but was strong enough and meaningfully enough that from it alone we could see what Jason couldnāt: he is not as lost, he is not as amoral, and heās not as cold as he has tried desperately to prove himself to be.
I actually found the take on Artemis and the Bana Mighdall pretty interesting in this retelling, and I like that we have a rogue Amazon as a new enemy for the team.Ā
I canāt believe Iām saying this, but Iām super excited to see what will come after this.Ā
Art: There was a range of artists, which is fine, the industry standard of pushing out these comics with the turnaround that they do does cause some disconnect, but for the most part an artist stayed for at least the completionof their storyline and then she was. And overall the trade still fel tconsistent, with some artists just standing out more than other.Ā
Marvelās Runaways (2017-present) #2 Rainbow Rowell, Kris Anka, Matthew Wilson
The new run of Runaways absolutely blew me away last month by shooting any and all expectations I had right through the skylight and beyond, so a good premise with beloved characters and a set in conflict really leads to a question of how do the pieces fall in order?
Story: I absolutely adore how Gert being the heart and glue of the family is being so blatantly emphasized throughout this (and that Old Lace is back). I also love that... honestly the trauma and lingering horrors Chase and Nico have survived in particular are being treated as real and damning in the eyes of someone who knew them only two years ago already. But most of all I love the emotional balance. Gertās anger and disappointment are justified, but her crudeness and accusatory nature are also clearly shown as being wrong and too subjective. The important thing to her, and thus to the group, is to come together again. And I love that it is her prime motivation through and through.Ā
That all being said, after such a bombastic first issue, it was a little difficult to have the momentum come to a halt so quickly. I donāt want to be taken wrong, I love issues where comics take their time and really meditate on the characters, their reactions to evens former and to come, and really develop relationships and the such. But it does feel a little unnatural to have that only two issues in when the previous issue was SO incredibly packed.Ā
Iām still fascinated with where we can go from here and very excited to see that Victor, Xavin, and Klara might not be destined to eternal obsecurity like I assumed when the book was first announced.Ā
Art: Honestly Iām still amazed at just how fantastic the art really is in this comci. .Itās SO good and the designs for all the characters are simply gorgeous. Though probably the best thing about all of it is the great coloring we see done here. Top notch.Ā
Marvelās Spider-Man - Marvel Legacy Primer Page Robbie Thompson, Valerio Schiti
I think I know less about what Marvel plans to do with Miles these days than Marvel knows what to do with Miles, which is horrifying because I just set that bar about as low as it could possibly have gone. But we.... have Rio Morales back which is the big reason I stopped keeping up with Miles to begin with so yay? I donāt know.Ā
I feel like this primer is actually aimed at fans like me who got off the wagon back when the Ultimate title lost most of its steam both from killing off too many of Milesā personal supporting cast and becoming too much about tertiary castās origins and then Peter Parker returning to life and stuffās weird. This feels like a big neon sign that saysĀ āThings are back! The originās the same! Do not look behind the curtain!ā It makes me curious but also apprehensive at the same time.Ā
also can we get robbie thompson to write milesā book and bendis let someone else write some books already jfc this was such a relief.Ā
IDWās Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe (2016-present) Vol. 2 Nick Pitarra, John Lees, Brahm Revel, Ryan Ferrier, Adam Gorham, Sophie Campbell, Bobby Curnow, Pablo Tunica
So unlike the rest of the reviews, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe doesnāt really fit my review format since itās more like a collection of vignettes across the TMNT universe that feed into the main book and each story is written and drawn by a different team, so it wouldnāt have that same cohesion.Ā
As the giant Ninja Turtle fan that I am and probably always will be, I canāt get enough of the mythos and the characters in TMNT, so having a book that has a solid, even meditative point of just exploring smaller stories and little character developments that wouldnāt fit in the very tight and controlled narrative of the main title is something of a perfect godsend to me. I love it in concept and in execution.
One thing I worry about, however, is that there definitely seems to be a lot of stories here that feel necessary to keeping up with the main series. Such as the story of how Alopex and Angel ran into the Toad Baron and escaped -- that was a pretty crucial piece of information for the Eternals storyline a few issues back in the main book. So it feels like more and more, because of how tight and concentrated the main book is, theyāre using books like Universe to fill in everything else, including buildup to larger more important narratives. And while thatās fine and even something I enjoy, itās a move that will really push people to start being more choosy with their books. Itās much like keeping up with Transformers right now, and that tends to lead to some mixed bags. But I suppose weāll trust and see.
At the end of the day, I have to pick the comics that really stuck with me the most. And while I was a little disappointed by a few titles this week, there was a pretty intense competition between the ones that genuinely caught me and made me really feel while reading them. And I think by that measurement I have to give the Pick of the Week this time around to the conclusion of Immortal Iron Fists. I was so worried about how this story could wrap everything up and itās with mother flipping dragons thatās how. I love it. I love Pei and I love her being officially adopted by Danny who is TOTAL ridiculous dad now. This is the kind of Immortal Iron Fist I am happy to support.Ā
As far as trades go... wow I for some reason was not anticipating getting slammed as much as I did, but I really didnāt feel like any of the books let me down. They were all pretty amazing and I felt like I also managed to incidentally cover the entire span of comic book genres and types in a matter of two days, which letās admit it, pretty impressive. I feel like the new releases this week are honestly a harder competition than the single issues but twist my arm, surprising no one nearly as much as Iām surprising myself here, I have to pick Red Hood and the Outlaws for managing to be a comic that... is unexpectedly good and unexpectedly sincere and unexpectedly emotionally motivating in ways that I wish... more comics... were? I just. have a real hard time complimenting Lobdell after tearing his books a new one for..... six years straight now.Ā But... thank you? for writing well? And making me feel things? For Jason Todd, Bizarro, and Artemis? Am I doing this right?
And those are the comics for this week! Did you happen to agree with me? Disagree? Think I missed out on picking up a comic that was good? Iād love to hear your thoughts.
But before I let you go, I have to (yes have to) plug once more:
I have exactly a month to pack up everything I own and move halfway across the country again which is not helping those financial crunches I mentioned before either.
