Aaron Hotchner (Criminal Minds) Chapter 31

There’s a hollow knock on your door, and you furrow your brows as you open the door.

“I usually make a more gracious entrance, but since we entered the veil things have changed. So I thought I’d be more careful this time around.”

He’s standing there, and you can’t stop yourself. You rush into his arms. He’s startled to say the least.

When you pull back he can see the distress.

“Sweetheart..”

His paternal instincts take control, and he closes the door, usehring you to take a seat.

“What’s wrong, did something happen to Hotchner?” You shake your head.

“Hotch is fine. So is Jack and Hailey. Everyone is fine.”

You’re smiling, and he’s relieved. But you’re still wearing that pained expression. One he’s grown used to. He understands now.

“I wish I could tell you that it gets easier. Seeing him everyday, not being able to remember a thing. I can’t think of any greater pain. I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. “

“I knew what I was doing. I’ll learn to live with it. “

He knows the reassurance is said so he won't worry.

“Actually dad, there’s something I wanted to ask you. I know you said none of them would remember but Jack he..he remembers everything. He’s also found a way to get through my barrier. It was…just like Hotch used to do.”

Manchester took a pause.

“Are you serious?” You nod.

He looks down.

“That’s incredible. It’s not exactly unheard of. Children are anchors for all kinds of power. Still, this is outside the field of seeing apparitions. He’s able to communicate despite the change in reality.” Manchester swallows.

“If he’s capable of that as a child then…”

It dawned on him that maybe Hotch would regain his memories. When he looks back at you, he stops himself. There was no use in giving you false hope. Especially when you seemed to already be at your limit. Maybe he could give you some practical advice.

“Why not pursue Hotch right now. It’s true that you brought back Hailey, but they are divorced here.”

“I’ve thought about it.”

It didn’t seem right. The whole purpose of this was to give him back his family. There was a chance that he could mend things with his ex wife. If so, you didn’t want to get in between that.

“I think the best thing for me to do is keep my distance. If it comes down to it, I may just end up transferring to a different division.”

“But you love this job, and your team.”

“Isn’t that how the saying goes? If you love something, then you let it go.”

“What jackass came up with that? You think I would have won over your mother with that half baked attitude. “ You smile. This is the first time he’s mentioned her in such a light.

“You know, you never really told me how you snagged mom. I mean she was beautiful. I can’t really see her going for such a gangster.”

“Hey, I was very meek in the old days, you know. “ His defensive reply causes you to laugh.

“To be frank she spent quite a bit of time chasing me. I was unapproachable, and blunt.”

“You, unapproachable, I can’t even picture it.”

“Hah ha, hilarious.”

He’s wearing the biggest smile.

“I hope you don’t have any plans, because this is a long story.”

You pull your legs onto the couch.

“I’ve got the time.”

“I’m sorry I kept him up so long.”

Hailey shook her head.

“It’s alright. Jack loved it. It’s nice having his dad around so often.”

Now that Jack was fast asleep, Hotch took a seat on the couch. They’d fallen into a routine that worked for both of them. Despite the separation, Jack seemed like the balance between them both. Hailey walked over handing him a glass of water, and he took it happily.

“Thank you.” She took a seat and he drank it.

“So, Ms. Black.” Hotch lowered the glass.

“She’s a good agent. Jack is also taken with her. Not something I really saw coming.”

“What about you?”

“Me?” Hotch wasn’t fully sure where this conversation was going.

“You don’t think she’s intriguing.”

“Hailey.” She smacked his shoulder playfully.

“Aaron, we're not teenagers. You can tell me if you’re interested in someone. I won’t block you on facebook.” He smiled at that.

“We work together, I’m also her superior. I’m not sure it would be very professional of me to even entertain that thought.”

“So you’ve thought about it!”

It felt like he was digging himself into a deeper hole. Hailey laughed this time.

“You know, for a profiler, you’re very easy to read.” She said between giggles.

“All jokes aside, I want you to be happy Aaron. I know I never made it easy, but you’ve always been there when it counted. You’re a good person, you deserve to have happiness. Something I couldn’t give to you.”

“I was happy, Hailey. “ His eyes are so sincere.

“I was rarely ever unhappy with you and Jack.” Hailey wipes at her eyes, and she leaned over, pulling him into a hug. He returns it.

“It’s time for you to be happy again. Jack and I will be fine.”

Superman vs. The Elite (2012)

Superman vs. the Elite is the beginning of an important conversation while also failing to capture the impact of its source material. It could've been great. Instead, it's just ok, which almost makes it worse than bad because you can so easily see how it could be improved.

The world is embracing a new group of violent superbeings called “The Elite”. Manchester Black (voiced by Robin Atkin Downes), Coldcast (Catero Colbert), Menagerie (Melissa Disney), and The Hat (Andrew Kishino) have no qualms about killing and are even pro-active when dealing with threats - eliminating those they "know" will cause trouble before they have time to act. Their ideals put them at odds with Superman (voiced by George Newbern).

To understand why Superman vs. the Elite doesn't quite work, you have to understand the source material. The film is based on the 2001 comic What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?, written by Joe Kelly, penciled by Doug Mahnke and Lee Bermejo. It's a single issue that generally, follows the same plot as this 76-minute picture. The first noticeable difference is the art style. While this story is set in a fantasy world, the moral dilemma it presents is grounded. By choosing more cartoon-like designs, the impact of its violence - and therefore its message - is diminished.

The voice acting is good, particularly George Newbern, Rivub Atkin Downes, and Pauley Perrette (who voices Lois Lane). The scenes between Superman/Clark Kent and Lane are strong. They are necessary quiet moments that add to the moral dilemmas being explored. Unfortunately, The bulk of the side characters, including Menagerie, The Hat, and Cold Cast don’t get much character development.

What this movie is really about is the moral dilemma that is the death penalty, black & white mentality, and idealism. My 11-year-old nephew's favorite comic book characters are Red Hood and Deathstroke - both gun-wielding, remorseless killers. Why does he like them? Because their stories are more “Adult”. Of course, they are. People die in those stories. People die in real life, and you don’t see murder in little children’s cartoons, so obviously, Superman - who doesn’t kill - must be more childish than Deathstroke. I disagree. In our world and in Superman’s there are bad people, some of which are irredeemable. Those individuals need to be punished for the evils they commit. Isn’t it easy to say that bad people should just be killed? Someone hurts you. You’re angry towards them. You want them to pay. What could be more satisfying than the most permanent of punishments, death?

Superman vs. the Elite raises a lot of points regarding this complicated question. It talks about heroes and true justice. The talk is dressed up in a cape, contains super beings that can move things with their minds, and giant insect tanks but the arguments are no less valid or relevant. Merely watching this movie isn’t enough. You’re going to want to look at the special features, read the story it’s based on and discuss it with the people in the room. This makes the ending (changed from the source material) a cheat that doesn't quite work. Still, it's mostly there and this makes it worth a watch.

When you see Superman vs. the Elite, set aside a generous amount of time so you can immerse yourself in the ideas presented. Or just read the book this is based on. This movie could've been great. It isn't. For this reason, Superman vs. the Elite will appeal more to casual comic book readers than hard-core fans of the Man of Steel because they won't already be sold on the character. (On Blu-ray, August 30, 2015)

after MUCH delay, I finally got caught up and finished watching @supergirlcw season 4 and WOW, what a fantastic season 💥 I loved all of the elements of this season including #AgentLiberty, #ManchesterBlack and the “illegal aliens” storyline, the introduction of #Dreamer (a trans superhero played by trans actress @nicoleamaines), the clever realization of the #RedDaughter storyline AND the brilliant inclusion of #LexLuthor 🙌🏼 I’ve said it for the past 4 years and I’ll say it again, #Supergirl is not only one of my fave television shows currently on the air but I *still* contend that it is THE best superhero story on TV - period. Aaron Hotchner (Criminal Minds)- Chapter 21

Within a few seconds, you bolt to block Hotch from your father’s view, raising your hands. Your eyes are ablaze, even Hotch is surprised at the blue light that has now overtaken your orbs.

“If you touch him I’ll kill you!”

Your tone doesn’t even sound like your own. Your voice has a deep tremble that Hotch has never witnessed. With your hands raised, you look as if you’re ready for a full on war. Your chest is heaving, and your jaw is clenched.

Still, Manchester doesn’t look shaken.

“I’m not here to cause you harm.”

“LIAR!!”

Manchester deflates, lowering his hands in a surrender.

“I came because I saw it. That nightmare."

You don’t show any significant change. That’s until Hotch places a hand on your shoulder. You turn sharply. Hotch’s look is soft, almost comforting. Your breathing returns to normal, and the blue filters out. You blink, now looking at him.

Hotch’s smile is warm. You swallow, right before you turn back. You can’t let your guard down, not in front of him. You’re still uneasy, and you stay firmly protective in front of Hotch. For once, your father looks disappointed in himself.

“The fact that you think I’m such a monster that I would kill an innocent man, someone you clearly love, it’s heartbreaking." Manchester looks down in guilt.

“Whether you like it or not, we’re family. I’m tethered to you, the same way you are to me. When you’re distressed, I feel it. That’s how I found you when you were taken by that monster. It’s how I know you now see me the same way you do those people that you hunt down.”

You can’t figure out if he’s serious. Because this is the first time that he shows remorse, or regret for his actions.

“I’d never put you through that, especially after I lost..” He can’t finish the sentence, he just swallows. Your guard lowers, because you can see it. The pain his actions have caused. He’s sincerely distraught. He wipes at his face.

“I didn’t get these powers after your mother died. I’ve always had them. I was born with this, the same way you were.”

“What…”

That couldn’t be right. You’d literally know this man all his life. Surely you would have seen him use it.

“It was hard for me growing up being this different. I didn’t trust many people. Being able to see the truth that people hid, it was a burden, a curse. But when I met you mother I..something inside me changed.” His eyes show love. The kind you hadn’t seen for years.

“I fell for her. She was special. For some reason I didn’t hear the chaos that I did from regular people. I thought she was a mutant too, but that wasn’t it. Our abilities see through everything, especially evil. The ones that we have a harder time reading are those who have more purity than darkness. Aneesa was different. Just like him.”

You narrow your eyes, turning to Hotch.

“Like me?” Hotch asks.

“There’s something about you that’s distinctively good. It’s why you can so readily block most of her ability. Why it’s so difficult for me to even touch yours.”

You aren’t sure how you feel about what he’s saying. If you even believe him.

“If you trust nothing else that I say, trust that I would never cause you harm."

You blink, and just like that, he’s gone.

This was not how you thought the night would go.
