🤡 What's a line, scene, or exchange you've written that made you laugh?

there are two particular scenes in Khalan's Journal that always make me laugh whenever I read them again. the first one is when Aya steals Antony's llama and claims it as her own, and the other is when Aya stuffs some turtles into a boat and Khalan goes on a secret rescue mission in the middle of the night to free them, but almost gets attacked by monsters in the process xD I feel like I'm typically not very good at writing funny scenes, so those two have always stuck out a lot imo.

🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?

hmm... sometimes? it depends on the tone of the scene. if I do end up listening to anything while I write, it's most likely the Hollow Knight menu theme on loop, or the Resting Grounds theme (from the same game). HK just has some really good somber vibes that tend to accurately pinpoint the Feel I wanna write, most of the time. as for songs that I've had on loop lately? that's a bit different and not really something tied to writing, per se. but the one I keep going back to in general is Reversible Campaign by DECO*27.

❌ What's a trope you will never write?

enemies-to-lovers. I'm not really a fan of a lot of romance tropes in general but that one is a personal pet peeve of mine. something about it just always felt wrong to me idk.

🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories?

uhhh, depends on the story or what details are involved? I'd probably say no for the most part. I did a lot more research in the past when my stories were heavily dependent on other fiction (especially with the early Minecraft stuff), but most of what I write about now is based on my own worldbuilding ideas that I've had to come up with from scratch. so I just kinda wing it and hope for the best. ^^;

if I do need specific info for something tho, then I'll look it up. usually in regards to language-related stuff. but it's hard to know if I'm ever accurate anyway because search engines online (and google translate) aren't that reliable and I never know if a particular article or site is actually informational or not. I do my best, regardless :'0

Elvis Top Three - Live Shows

It’s been a long time since my last top three question (about fifteen minutes as a matter of fact 😉)! I’m not sure how many Elvis fans are still active on here, but I’d love to hear from anyone who’s interested. My question today is: What are your top three live Elvis shows? I know I’ve asked top three live songs before, but this time I’m wondering what your go-tos are if you’re putting on a whole live album.

Here are my current picks:

February 23, 1970 – Closing Night in Vegas

This has been on my list of favorite shows since I first heard it over a year ago. Elvis has that beautiful soulful rasp to his voice in this era, and you can tell he’s still really enjoying performing. Songs that I think eventually became “old hat” for him, like “See See Rider,” still sound really fresh. This is probably also my favorite version of “Polk Salad Annie,” with its very intensely energetic climax. The whole set list for this show is top-notch. “It’s Now or Never” where he instructs the band on what to do at the end? Perfection. And we get to hear him play piano on “Lawdy Miss Clawdy!” “Glen can I borrow your pian-uh for a minute?” If you have not listened to this show before, consider this your sign.

December 31, 1976 – New Year’s Eve in Pittsburgh, PA

I only just recently listened to this for the first time, and I am absolutely obsessed. Elvis is in a great mood for this show, joking with the audience and performing for an hour and a half. He really gets into the music, adding fun little ad libs (“there was nothing that could hold – hold – hold me – hold me…”). Some of the highlights for me are him playing guitar on “Reconsider Baby” and playing piano on “Unchained Melody” and “Rags to Riches.” (“While I’m at the pian-uh, I’d like to do another song, y’know, if ya don’t mind.” No we do not mind, sweet silly amazing man!!!) This is the only time he performed “Rags to Riches” live, and it is exquisite. I get chills listening to how full and rich his voice sounds on this. I know how much the touring was taking its toll on him by this point, but he really pulled something amazing out of himself for this performance. The sheer magnitude of his talent is just undeniable.

March 25, 1961 – Pearl Harbor benefit show

It was very hard to choose one show for this final spot (so many good shows in 1970, 1972, 1974, the list goes on and on lol). But I love this one because I think you still get a little taste of what his performances were like in the 50s with his corny little jokes and the girls going absolutely wild. It must have been such a thrill for him to see how much audiences were still clamoring to see him perform post-army. It’s such a shame that this was his last live performance for eight years. Be warned, there is a lot of audience noise in this recording, but it kind of sets the mood for what it must have felt like to be there.

I'm not going to repost that long post again, but to answer @jurakan and @manebioniclegali - Yes, that is Ian McDiarmid. Sir Christopher Lee made an appearance, as did Max Von Sydow and Terry Jones from Monty Python. In fact Terry Jones wrote the episode he was a part of. Carrie Fisher had a hand in writing several episodes. Several big names appeared in the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles series, including Harrison Ford.

2: Do you decorate your pfp/change your URL for the holiday season? Sometimes! Depends on the platform. Tumblr, usually not. On Discord right now, I am "BG Snowman". :)

3: Do you do anything to celebrate Winter Solstice? Not really, but it is a notable day for personal reasons: I found out I was expecting my first child on Winter Solstice, so that's always a fun memory I associate with the day.

4: If you could be any wintertime mythical creature (sentient snowman, flying reindeer, runaway gingerbread man, ghost from a christmas carol, etc.) what would you be? I want to be an Elf on the Shelf. :)

5: What colors do you like seeing come out in the wintertime? ALL OF THEM. So many people complain about how dark it is in the winter (and as I get older, I get it), but we decorate that darkness with the loveliest Christmas lights! And little kid me loves the classic red-blue-yellow-green string lights!

6: A song you love from your spofity wrapped/year-end roundup? Rosie's Nocturne by Michael Giacchino (JoJo Rabbit, 2019). It's absolutely gorgeous. I fell in love with it while I was writing Now I Am Become Death in April, and it's followed me through some of my other WWII BttF fics ever since. Also, go see JoJo Rabbit now if you haven't. Sam Rockwell? I swear I never expect to like him (idk why) but he nails every role I've seen him in, especially in this film.

7: Four things that make you happy in the winter?

Chrsitmas lights. I want all the Christmas lights in any color, any shape, any size. They are magical.

Being Santa Claus. :) When my parents told me, my reaction wasn't denial, outrage, or sadness — I couldn't wait to do my part. Realizing every parent did this because they loved their kids that much was humbling. And realizing I could extend that magic to anyone long before I ever had a family of my own? Oh, I love it. I love bearing that badge. I love making this time of year special.

That it's not frowned upon that I want to stay inside under a blanket playing with yarn and watchin TV/ movies all day

I'm not sweating, there are no bugs trying to eat me, and my skin isn't flaring up from sun & heat exposure!

Elvis Top Three - Memphis Songs

Wow, it’s been a loooong time since I posted one of these! I’ve really missed hearing what everyone loves about their favorite songs. With the release of the new Memphis box set tomorrow, I thought it would be a good time to bring this back and ask everyone – What are your top three songs that Elvis recorded in Memphis? As always, there are no wrong answers, this is all out of love. ❤️

Here are my top three (at least for this moment):

Trying to Get to You – I know I’ve mentioned this on other top three posts, but this is one of my favorite songs period. I could listen to any version of this and instantly be in a better mood. The studio version he recorded at Sun is so sweet – you can hear the youthful exuberance in his voice. I also love that he really enjoyed coming back to it throughout his career. A friend recently shared the audio clip below with me, where he says it’s one of his favorite songs he ever recorded.

Any Day Now – This is one I keep coming back to, and somehow it just keeps getting better every time I listen to it. His voice in this era, with that soulful rasp, makes me feel some kind of way. His whole delivery on this song is perfection.

Danny Boy – This is one that was not on my radar too much in the past, but lately I’ve been obsessed with it. If anyone were to tell me he could no longer perform an amazing vocal in his later years, I would direct them to this song. The richness of his low tone, the ability to hit the higher notes, everything about this performance is just exquisite. His voice, coupled with the lyrics of the song, gives me chills. I like to think that all the love we give him is allowing him to rest so peacefully.

I didn’t believe it either, and I kind of still don’t, but 2004! Sumo of the Opera is VHS era too, and I absolutely hate that fact. They both feel like early DVD only releases in ways I can’t quite explain. It feels Wrong though, that’s for sure.

TL;DR: My pen name is a pirate name. Yo ho, let's go!

"BG Sparrow" goes a long way back to the first fanfic I ever published in the Pirates of the Caribbean fandom in 2004. I was 15, and my two best friends who were also obsessed were 14 and 13. They encouraged me writing up this silly story where Jack, Will, and Elizabeth got stuck in the 21st century and we had to hide them/ deal with them/ get them back to their own time.

Anyways, in the story, when we said goodbye, each of them gave us a pirate name. Elizabeth gave my friend Lindsay the name Bloody Jane, Will gave Jessica the name Mad Mary, and Jack gave me the name Black Grace. So in the sequel, when we went to pirate times, we were Jane Swann, Mary Turner, and Grace Sparrow lol.

It's been my fanfic pen name all these years, and I don't think I could ever part with it because of how great it felt to find this new hobby and have my friends just wait on bated breath for the next ridiculous adventure I put to paper. It was a terrible, terrible fic and incredibly self-indulgent, written at a time where I never thought I'd take writing seriously, but I still have it posted to my old FFN account as a reminder of all the fun and love that got me to where I am today.

I doubt I'll ever officially publish any original work under this pen name, but here it lives. <3

Hi! How do I find the specialty tags you guys have available? (I.e. sfw nat 1, don't mess with the dm.) I believe the explanation post is buried way down in the link provided to try and find them; either that or the link doesn't work correctly (it's been a little bit since I've tried). I thought they would be added by the mods if they were forgotten, but I haven't seen that happen on anything I've submitted.

Ah, yes, you're correct - the specialty tags get added by the mods when we queue up a submission. The tag list on the submit page is unwield-ly long, and unfortunately the mobile app adds every tag to submissions, meaning that if the submitter doesn't remember to remove all the tags, the mods have to do it. It's way easier on us to have submitters choose the tags they have context for (game system, multipart or not, etc), and the mods add the specialty tags later.

If you aren't seeing specialty tags on your posted submissions, it's either because Tumblr ate them (which happens sometimes), or we didn't think any specialty tags applied. For example, not all quotes that involve a monk get tagged #monk ki ing around - only quotes where the focus is on monk-specific shenanigans. This is to reduce tag clutter, since the nature of tabletop groups means that multiple classes often show up in a single submission, regardless of the actual focus of the quote.

If you think a specialty tag should be applied to your submission and wasn't, please send us an ask with a link to the post and the tag(s) you think should be added, and we'll see what we can do!

I've been following your blog for awhile now, and I've been wondering: why do you write your rps like they're some form of couplets? I don't know if you've ever explained that anywhere and I've just not seen it or what. Personally, I find it difficult to read because the flow is broken up awkwardly, but I'm curious to know your reasoning.

Secondly, it’s derived from an earlier period of my hobby writing on Tumblr, when paragraphs were highly formatted for the sake of flow.  As the years passed, I began to simplify the formatting so that action would be identified without indentation, and then dialogue would be a fully indented block of text.  This derives from three sources:

1) My academic writing (I’m a doctor of art history and I write lots of academic essays), in which blocks of text (Chicago Manual Format) are indented and reduced in font size by two points, 2) My background in school plays in high school and college (wow, a million years ago, lol) in which theater and film scripts are written with similar indenting, and possibly most impactful, 3) My background as a visual artist and my belief that some amount of italicizing, bolding, and indentation for dramatic pause/emphasis enhances the work as a multi-media presentation (wherein you can “hear” the character’s voice and feel the mood accordingly). 

I’m sorry that your experience of my writing has not been enjoyable!  Perhaps I can recommend for you a couple of other Lokis whose writing you might find more suitable to your tastes? @theprisonerofasgard usually writes in regular paragraphs, and @silvertonguedgod sometimes writes in formatting similar to mine, but not always. Both are excellent Loki writers and good friends of mine.

Of course with Elvis being the sexiest man to ever exist, sometimes (a lot of times) that appeal oozed out into his music, especially when he would make those…noises. You know what I mean. 😉 So what are everyone’s top three sexy/horny Elvis songs? 🥵

Shake, Rattle and Roll (full version) - The verse that was edited out (“the way you wear those dresses, the sun comes shinin’ through, I can’t believe my eyes, all that mess belongs to you”) reminds me of what Elvis supposedly said to Kay Wheeler when they met - “Is this all you?” Oh my god, I would just die if he looked at me and said something that sexy. 🥵 Even without that verse, the song is full of innuendo and I love it. “You make me roll my eyes and then you make me grit my teeth.” I’m picturing a very specific scenario with that line…

Steamroller Blues - Whew, hearing Elvis sing blues just does something to me, and again with the innuendo on this one! Please, Elvis, shoot me full of rhythm and blues or whatever else you want. 😉 Also I love how he pronounces cement like semen lol.

It Feels So Right - Basically the whole Elvis is Back album is off-the-charts sexy, but this one in particular drives me wild. His intense vocal delivery makes me feel some kind of way, and I wish I could’ve seen him belting this out in the studio. “Nothing could be wrong that feels so right.” Describes my love for this man. ❤️
