I still haven't finished the series so idk if they do but I kind of wish Dead Boy Detectives used some actual local Port Townsend Ghost stories for their cases like Manresa Castle or Fort Worden

Haunted States of America: Washington

Ghost Stories of Washington (2000) by Barbara Smith
Disembodied whispers, fading screams and moans from behind walls. Phantom footsteps on the stairs. Furniture scraping across the floor. Doorknobs slowly turning.... The ghostly tales range from long-dead relatives returning for a last look at a loved one, to flashing lights and crashing noises in the unoccupied upstairs of the old house down the road.
Locations featured in Ghost Stories of Washington include the Seattle Underground, Manresa Castle, Mount Baker Theatre, Gonzaga University, the Cascades, and Seattle's Georgetown district.
For a different kind of spooky in Washington, check out Ghosts and Strange Critters of Washington and Oregon (1999) by Jefferson Davis.

St. Ignatius, born in 1491 at the regal Castle of Loyola, Spain, became a famous courtier and knight in the court of Ferdinand V. Wounded in the siege of Pampeluna, he retired to Manresa to lead a life of prayer and contemplation. After being ordained a priest, he founded the Society of Jesus to fight the forces of Satan as represented by pagans, Mohammedans, etc. He died in the grace of God in 1556.

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA The Founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) Feast Day: July 31
"Go, and set the world on fire."
Ignatius, the founder of the Society of Jesus, popularly in short as the Jesuits, was born Iñigo López de Oñaz y Loyola, on October 23, 1491 in a castle in Azpeitia, Gipuzkoa, Crown of Castile. His parents, Don Beltrán Ibáñez de Oñaz y Loyola and Doña María Sáenz de Licona y Balda, who were of the minor nobility, from the clan of Loyola, involved in the Basque war of the bands. Íñigo was the youngest of their thirteen children. Their eldest son, Juan Pérez, had soldiered in forces commanded by Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, but died fighting in the Italian Wars.
In 1509, at the age of 18, Íñigo took up arms for Antonio Manrique de Lara, 2nd Duke of Nájera. His diplomacy and leadership qualities earned him the title 'servant of the court', and made him very useful to the Duke. Under the Duke's leadership, Íñigo participated in many battles without injury. Unfortunately, his ambition of pursuing a military career came to a sudden end during the Battle of Pamplona on May 20, 1521, when he was gravely injured when a French-Navarrese expedition force stormed the fortress of Pamplona, and a cannonball ricocheting off a nearby wall shattered his right leg.
While recovering from his surgery, he asked for some books of romance to pass the time, but none of that sort could be found. Instead, they gave him a life of Christ and a collection of the lives of saints. Touched by their example, he exclaimed: 'These men were of the same frame as I; why then should I not do what they have done?'
Henceforth, he resolve to become a soldier of Christ and withdrew to a monastery in Manresa (Catalonia). In March 1522, he visited the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat. There, he carefully examined his past sins, confessed, gave his fine clothes to the poor he met, wore a 'garment of sack-cloth', then hung his sword and dagger at the Virgin's altar during an overnight vigil at the shrine.
His religious experience was written down in the famous 'Spiritual Exercises', when Pope Pius XI described as 'the wisest and most universal spiritual code for guiding the soul on the path to salvation.'
After a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and Rome, he went to Paris and study at the University of Paris to complete his theological studies in preparation for the priesthood. He attended first the ascetic Collège de Montaigu, moving on to the Collège Sainte-Barbe to study for a master's degree.
There, he organized a new religious order together with Peter Faber and Francis Xavier, which was approved by Pope Paul III in 1540, with the name Society of Jesus. Their battle cry was 'Ad Majorem dei Gloriam' - 'For the greater glory of God'. Noted for their spiritual and intellectual formation, as well as for their military discipline, the Jesuits, also known as God's Marines, operated with zeal in schools, charitable institutions, and missions overseas. Ignatius was chosen as the first Superior General of the order and invested with the title of 'Father General' by the Jesuits. Ignatius spent the rest of his life in Rome, where he became the friend of Philip Neri.
Worn out by the immense work of directing the new order, Ignatius died peacefully in Rome, on July 31, 1556 at the age of 64, probably of the 'Roman Fever', a severe variant of malaria which was endemic in Rome throughout medieval history. An autopsy revealed that he also had kidney and bladder stones, a probable cause of the abdominal pains he suffered from in later life.
Beatified by Pope Paul V on July 27, 1609, and canonized a saint by Pope Gregory XV on March 12, 1622. Ignatius is the patron saint of the Basque provinces of Gipuzkoa and Biscay as well as of the Society of Jesus. He was declared patron saint of all spiritual retreats by Pope Pius XI in 1922.

Speaking of Manresa Castle, I know that the HER Interactive team used it as inspiration for Treasure in the Royal Tower and Message in a Haunted Mansion, but looking at these pictures of it here:

I find it nearly-impossible to believe that it wasn’t still in the backs of their minds 9-10 games later while making Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon, too.

The Manresa Castle
There are many haunted places in Washington, but one that remains to be popular among most is the Manresa Castle. This structure serves as a hotel, a restaurant, as well as a lounge so many visit the location annually.
Several witnesses have stated that there seems to be an immense level of paranormal activity in the Manresa Castle. The construction of this structure was completed in the year of 1892. At that point in history, it served as a home to Charles Eisenbeis and his wife, Kate. Mr. Eisenbeis was one of the most prominent members of the business district of his time, having an avid interest in several different industries such as lumber, hotels, financial institutions, bakery, and more.
In the year of 1878, Charles Eisenbeis was elected as the very first mayor when the city became incorporated in the county of Jefferson. Due to the fact that he was considered a social elite throughout the community, he found it in his best interest to construct a home that appropriately reflected his social status. Eventually, the Manresa Castle would gain the reputation of being the largest private estate constructed in the area. The castle was often referred to as the “Eisenbeis Castle” by those that lived in the area. It consisted of thirty individual rooms, walls that were one foot in thickness, tiled fireplaces that were designed by artisans from Germany, and a beautiful slate roof. In the year of 1902, Charles passes away. His widowed wife eventually remarried and left the structure. The caretaker remained to be the only person on the grounds for nearly two decades.
By the time that the year 1925 rolled around, the castle was purchased for a luxury vacation destination for trained nuns that acted as professors in the schools in the Seattle area. This lasted until 1927 when Jesuit based priests purchased the castle. They intended to use it as a college for individuals interested in training in ascetic theology. The following year, many renovations were made to the castle. The name “Manresa Hall” was then given to the building. In the year of 1968, the building was sold and converted into a hotel. It was at that time that the name of “Manresa Castle” was given to the structure.
There are several strange and unusual events that seem to take place in the various haunted places in Washington. This is especially true when it comes to this particular castle. It is rumored that there are at least two spiritual beings that reside in the castle. The first ghost is said to be a Jesuit priest that once resided in the castle. It is said that this individual became distraught in life and went to the tower that is located just above the third floor. While there, he committed suicide by hanging himself in the tower. Individuals that have stayed in the room just below the tower, which is identified as “302” claim to hear noises emitted from the tower, and upon inspection, there is no explanation for the events. Many have claimed that they see a hooded figure wandering around in the building, and it is believed to be the priest. While haunted places in Washington typically do accumulate several rumors, witnesses verify that this is a very real presence in the castle.
The next ghost that is rumored to be present in the Manresa Castle is that of “Kate”. Just to be clear, this is not the same Kate that lived in the structure once it was constructed. This is a woman that stayed at the structure for quite some time at one point, though it is not exactly clear which decade this happened. There is a room that is identified as the “Tower Suite” which is numbered “306”. It is believed that she committed suicide by throwing herself from the window of the room. While there is a lot of speculation on why this occurred, many eye witnesses have claimed to see the full body apparition of this woman throughout the building.
When it comes to haunted places in Washington, most individuals require some sort of historical documentation in order to validate the stories surrounding such structures. However, the stories of the Jesuit Priest and the woman known as “Kate” lack in this area. While it could be that there is, in fact, spirits roaming this haunted castle, there is much doubt surrounding which spirits and even if the strange and unusual activity surrounding the castle is related to the paranormal. The fact remains, though, that there is something going on.

What was the most fun job you guys ever took?
OOH! Definitely the Port Townsend/Manresa Castle job.
Its an old seaport city in WA, and its got a lot of cool old Victorian-era buildings.
We went because of the trouble they were having with a few ghosts up at Manresa Castle, a really old manor turned monastery turned hotel.
Tumblr media
The job itself was easy enough, though me and Madi got locked up in the tower at one point, which was a little scary (but tbh if I had to get stuck in a confined space with someone... it'd be Madigan lol). We ended up having to investigate at night, because strangely, we couldn't pick up readings or see the damn things during the day.
Honestly, it was a really fun job just because of how cool Port Townsend is! We got to take a ferry over there and back, and got to hang out on the beaches and stuff during the day! Its got a lot of cool little shops, and even cooler, its home to Fort Warden, which is the name of the military base that was built and in operation during WW2. It's all abandoned now, and its free to explore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We got a lot of strange readings in the Forts, and we're definitely going back to check em out, see if we can't find something.

alas the nancydrewnetwork march merch challenge is no more (though I wish @nancydrewnetwork all the best) I wanted to share what I was working on- inspired by HeR’s old postcard / ecard promos I thought it would be neat if you could buy postcard packs inspired by each game.
for SSH...
Tumblr media
front/back of card, and other cards in the pack could be...
Tumblr media
(ssh is honestly a p easy one as it’s a museum exhibit)
I also put some together for TRT...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(the marie antoinette from the top of the stairs and the one from the tower; wickford castle corporate card based on the brochure in the lobby that ended up looking a bit too much like a business card really; the 3 wisconsin cards from the lobby; the wickford brochure uses a picture of Inverary castle as a picture of wickford (the real one is in scotland), so here’s the real inverary; and one with a pic of manresa caslte, which is a real faux-castle-cum-hotel in Washington state)
SHA...
Tumblr media
(scenery& etc from in-game incl a very questionable attempt at recreating yazzie’s logo; the ‘varmint’ card is in fact from the game files, it seems to be an unused + unfinished award; the petroglyph and b+w photo are from the pictures in mary’s shop; the ‘arizona’ and cliff dwelling cards are real postcards)
DOG...
Tumblr media
(tbh most of these are p clearly inspired by the amount of time I spent being dragged around to provincial parks as a young thing... I imagine the educational fare at US state parks follows a similar vein. including ranger akers’ fursona was not a choice so much as it was a necessity)
and finally MHM...
Tumblr media
(sthg for abby’s new-age bullshit; the golden gardenia; lizzie applegate; nancy and charlie’s san fran postcards; and a postcard that’s almost nancy’s postcard, but the one in’game was at an angle and i couldn’t get a workable pic. i would also probably include the mhm promo cards linked above - or better/updated versions of same - in this pack as well)
