Choosing Between Manual and Auto-Update for Stats
Kickoff Tweaking SQL Server’s performance is pretty much like fine-tuning a musical instrument; you gotta know the ins and outs. One piece of this complex puzzle is the stats SQL Server relies on for making smart choices about query execution plans. Sure, SQL Server’s got your back with automatic stats updates, but there are times, especially in super busy environments, where you might need to…

Just realized a thing about how AO3 works that I don't think is a bug and it makes me sad :/
#shrimp thoughts#if you have a 500k chaptered fic that you start writing in 2020; continue writing in 2021 and finish in 2022 it's Probably only going to#show in 2022 in the statistics page... because AO3 can't display a fic three times I think? so technically if you wrote nothing but this fi#for three years... you've written nothing in 2020 + nothing in 2021 + 500k in 2022. weh :/#of course if you count it manually in your own separate statistics file then sure. but AO3 doesn't seem to count individual chapters#but rather whole works. so if you posted 200k of the fic in 2020 and updated it in jan 2021 with a 5k chapter -> you posted nothing in 2020#and 205k in 2021. weh again :/

Posh Fancy People Name Generator (Debrett's Peerage 1903)
Do you spend a lot of time coming up with silly names for your Jeeves and Wooster fanfic? Do you and your friends get together on weekends to LARP as Oscar Wilde characters? Do you just want to feel grateful that your parents didn't name you Allnutt?
Then have I got the random name generators for you!
Introducing two Debrett’s Peerage (1903) Name Generators, by yours truly!
It will give you a first name, TWO middle names (so posh), and a surname, all taken from actual once-living human beings whose names were recorded in the 1903 edition of Debrett’s Peerage
There’s a posh man version and a fancy lady version
(I also included an optional tick-box to add a title/peerage rank and/or some silly bonus info from me, but you can keep it name-only if you prefer)
here are some of my fave Actual Names that I found. now imagine how much sillier we can make this by putting it all in a blender
please note: lettice is her middle name. her surname is gore. miss lettice gore, you are an icon.
A few notes on logistics:
Names are not weighted and were entered into each category only once, regardless of how common or uncommon they were in 1903. This means you’re as likely to be named Wyndham as you are to be John, because frankly it wouldn’t be fun if every man you generated was named John
However! First name and middle names are separate lists, so your first name could be the same as one of your middle names; alternatively, both of your middle names could be the same because middle names are pulling from the same list. This should enhance the absurdity
The name ‘Napier’ appears in Debrett’s Peerage as a first name, as a middle name, AND as a surname. While it’s statistically unlikely, it is technically possible to generate the name Napier Napier Napier Napier for yourself
Spelling variations (eg, Ann vs Anne) were included as separate names
The generator is continuously being updated with more names, because there’s a whoooole lot of names recorded in Debrett’s Peerage (yes, I am manually reading and entering names from a 2,000+ page document. what of it.)
For the bonus tick-box: the titles are all real, but they may be paired with a different peerage rank than they were in actuality (e.g., if you generate Lord So-and-So, the So-and-So is a real title, but the generator might tack it onto a Earl instead of a Marquess, etc). I didn’t include any royalty, just aristocracy
For the bonus tick-box: most are a straightforward “you are a Countess” but some are me being a bit silly and having fun
#writing resources#random name generator#name generator#1900s#writing#writing resource#writing reference#jeeves and wooster#oscar wilde#oh why not I mentioned ya#downton abbey#let's throw you guys in too for fanfic purposes#this was a fun project to learn how to do

🌙 INFO: updated polling methods 💫
in response to multiple instances of tampering and trolling on our tumblr polls, we are moving to a more secure method of polling for the remainder of the tournament. this will impact the semi-finals and finals of both the mainline AND second chance brackets.
future polls will no longer be completely anonymous (only moderators will be privy to votes, the general public will never see who voted for whom), nor will polls have reactive public statistics. votes will be manually verified by our moderation team. we have multiple automatic and manual checks in place to prevent further tampering, and are easily able to disqualify any fraudulent votes without impacting the overall poll.
How will polls run?
future polls- and the semi-final round six rerun- will be conducted via google forms.
instead of voting on tumblr, participants will follow a link on poll posts to a google form and choose an OC from a multiple choice list. the process is still very simple, and should only take a few seconds.
a tumblr blog and a google account are required. you may only vote once. you cannot change your vote. your email will not be submitted, recorded, or observed by moderators in any way.
the posting time of polls is also being adjusted, to account for moderator availability. polls will now drop publicly at 9AM CST, three hours earlier than previously. all polls will still run for 7 days, and our overall schedule remains the same.
statistics will no longer be publicly visible, but we will aim to provide updates on polls every 2 days, to encourage campaigning and good-sporting competitiveness in support of the competitors. the final results will be a surprise until they are posted on the tournament blog shortly after polls conclude!
How are you verifying votes?
the requirements to vote include a verified google account, which is automatically verified by google and limited to a single vote per person, and a genuine tumblr URL. though google requires you to be logged in for verification, your email will not be submitted or observed by the moderation team.
tumblr URLs will be manually verified by our moderation team. we recommend that you input your most recognisable URL in the community, to make this process faster. only moderators will see this information, and it will never be made public.
we have several other checks in place, and are once again documenting all of our data should it be required. our moderation team are skilled, dedicated, and hardworking, and will be working behind the scenes for the duration of polls to monitor for any further evidence of tampering.
What if my blog is empty/looks suspicious?
if you have an otherwise empty account that could be mistaken for a bot or fake account by our team, we request that you reblog the polls you are voting in, even temporarily, so that our modteam knows your blog is legitimate.
only otherwise empty accounts are required to do this.
if you have an empty account and do not reblog a poll, your vote may be recorded as suspicious and disqualified. due to the expected workload of this task, we cannot guarantee that moderators will reach out to confirm first, however all decisions regarding possible suspicious votes will be peer reviewed by our entire team of 7.
🎉🌙💫
we wish all competitors the best of luck, and hope our spectators have plenty of fun continuing to cheer on these amazing characters! happy voting!

big fucking ts2 spreadsheets
i'm clearly a very exciting person so a while ago i compiled three ts2 spreadsheets, listing each premade playable* sim's aspiration (+ hidden tokens although they don't affect statistics at all they're just for fun), along with a hopefully legible table listing the frequency of each aspiration as compared to gender and age group.
this ⬇️ is the largest spreadsheet, which comprises all 206 playable sims, including those from subhoods/unihoods and stealth hoods. this is also, unfortunately, the one which may be most prone to inaccuracies, as i don't play with subhoods/unihoods whatsoever and relied on the sims wiki for my information. the sims wiki, however, is rather incompetent and has been known to incorrectly list aspirations. i apologise for any errors, though ultimately i am lazy and i just didn't feel like manually installing all of the unihoods in a testhood and manually scouring simPE for all of this given that i don't play these hoods in the first place :( i can promise that it'll be mostly accurate though
this ⬇️ next spreadsheet is comprised of all 123 playable sims from the main hoods, including EPs, which is more my wheelhouse. you can trust me with this one i swear </3
and lastly! this ⬇️ right here is for only the base game hoods, and to be honest i find it the most interesting. remember that asterisk? this is for playable sims *and a select few NPCs that are plot-significant in some way, so kaylynn langerak, gordon king, crystal vu, abhijeet cho and meredith lillard. this was the first of the spreadsheets i made so idk i was having fun with it i wanted to include circe's friends for this one.
if there are any errors (there probably are) lmk and i will update it :)
#the sims 2#pleasantview#strangetown#veronaville#riverblossom hills#desiderata valley#belladonna cove#oh god i'm so sorry for all those tags i just thought other people might find this mildly interesting... LOL

Book Review: Pathfinder 1E Bestiary
And so we’re back again with another round of book reviews, looking at the various books and supplements I’ve collected over the history of the game, and this time we’re starting the week with the second half of the two books you’re assumed to have in order to play the game: the first monster book, the Bestiary!
Monster books have been a part of ttrpgs for a very long time, since the beginning, in fact. While not every system has or needs a dedicated book for the statistics of whatever horrible monsters exist out there in the game’s world, they certainly are convenient as a way to provide an arsenal of baddies for the heroes to face.
Again, much like last time when we covered the core rulebook of Pathfinder First Edition, we’ll inevitably have to talk about the changes the system made to it’s 3.5 D&D predecessor, but given that this is the last “core” book, we won’t be doing that in the future since books like this one have set the precedent.
In any case, let’s take a deep dive into the Bestiary!
Starting us off, the monsters in the first Bestiary, most of which are old D&D mainstays with a heaping helping of Pathfinder originals from the first few adventure paths thrown in, which makes sense. There’s even a few beasties from the 3rd party Tome of Horrors books, which took lots of monsters from earlier editions of D&D that WotC wasn’t really using or had control over and brought them into the forefront. Also returning was the 3.5 mainstay in the form of templates used for modifying statblocks as well, such as making skeletons out of everything, or depicting every creature with blood relations to dragons, celestials, and fiends.
In any case, if this bestiary could be said to have a theme, it would mostly be “bringing the D&D staples forward”, which they did, converting them over into the Pathfinder paradigm, consolidating the elemental an giant types into subtypes of outsider and humanoid, respectively. We even get to see the seeds planted for major paradigm changes, like seeing what we called kytons being rewritten from being devils to being their own whole outsider type and ogre mage being made into true oni and not just a rebranded “relative” of ogres.
Many of these monsters, while updated, maintain their old classic abilities. However, there are some tweaks here and there. Basilisk petrification being reversable by killing it and using the blood on the stone bodies is a brilliant way to keep the threat of petrification on such a low-level monster while softening the blow so that it’s no longer a party killer or massive inconvenience for low-level parties.
Organization-wise, the Bestiary has a massive improvement to the old Monster Manual formula from 3.5, and that is that individual monster entries are limited to one or two pages. This makes the consolidated statblocks easier to reference instead of having to thumb back and forth between two or more pages in the middle of a battle, and it even gives nearly every monster a chance to have it’s own art in the books. (You’d be forgiven for thinking that Derro were a Pathfinder creation, but they were in 3.5 too, but you’d never notice because they had no art and their description was so lackluster that nobody would ever bother using them)
And like any good monster book, there’s an appendix of rules for things they didn’t want to have to reprint every single time they wanted to use the same ability or subtype with unified traits, as well as guidelines for making your own monsters from scratch, which is super important. I mean, can you imagine a system that makes you buy a whole separate book just to have exact guidelines for how to make your own monsters? (Looks meaningfully at the 2E Gamemastery Guide)
A major positive in this book is the artwork. The cover art for the Bestiary sets a trend we’ll see throughout 1E in that the art takes three monsters within together that collectively set the tone for what sort of monsters you’ll find within. In this case a troll, marilith demon, and of course the iconic Pathfinder goblins, setting up the theme of the book being primarily classic monsters from the system that Pathfinder is derived from.
Inside the cover, we find that the art does a lot to really bring each monster to life, and for the most part the monsters are easily recognizable yet distinctive from their D&D counterparts in ways that for the most part enhance them. I distinctly remember my jaw dropping when seeing the bone devil illustration, which is miles above the 3.5 version in the awesome factor.
Of course, they’re not all winners, at least in my opinion. The choker, for example, just doesn’t hit the same as the tentacle-armed horror from 3.5
Less a weakness in the art and more a bit of whiplash though, is the dragons. If you’ve been playing 3.5 and earlier editions, you probably have a distinct idea about what each dragon species looks like. Black dragons have the big forward-pointing horns growing from the sides of their heads, metallic dragons have semi-flexible supports for their wings as opposed to the more bat-like chromatic dragons, and whatnot. It took some getting used to, looking at the entry for gold dragons and not seeing the barbel-faced, partially eastern lung dragon-inspired gold dragon, but a much more generic design. That isn’t to say that Pathfinder dragons aren’t distinctive, and I understand why, but it was an adjustment.
Overall, this book has a lot going for it. As the first monster book in the system, the Bestiary sets itself up nicely as an inheritor to 3.5, with plenty of improvements and refinements alongside the familiar creatures we’ve come to expect.
That ends up being a double-edge sword though, as the book barely has any new monsters, all the excitement being for monsters we all already know about, albeit reimagined visually somewhat. Also, the book has a handful of what can be described as “pinup art” for certain feminine, attractive monsters like lillends, dryads, and sphinxes, which may put off some folks, and does nothing to dispel the old stereotype of ttrpg players being repressed and horny teenagers (and adults that never got over being repressed and horny). But if that doesn’t bother you then it doesn’t bother you. In any case over the years Pathfinder got better about this, so that even the pretty monsters were not overly sexualized.
In any case, that about does it for today. The Pathfinder 1E Bestiary does it’s best to offer us some fun monsters with which to populate our game worlds with, though most we’ve seen before. Tune in tomorrow, however, for more books reviewed, starting with continuing our look into the first Adventure Path!

About the Possible Deterioration that the curse of Inmortality had on Khaenri'ahns (TL;DR)
CLARIFITACION: This thread was written just after the Caribert Archon Quest came out, and also when I was still an student in Psychology.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The effects of the curse started to gain my interest since we got the Caribert Archon Quest, because they remind me a bit of neurocognitive disorders.
First off, I'll use the knowledge I've obtained during my Psychology career, and the sources that were given to me during that time.
Even so, I'd still need an specific specialization to talk confidently about this topic.
So because this is not my specialized field of research, I'll be talking from the knowledge and point of view from when I used to be an student.
I'm open to feedback by any expert in the topic<3
By the way, I'll use the "ND" abrevitation to refer to neurocognitive disorders.
And I'll also use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed). I would use the DSM-5 TR (most updated edition) but I still need to get it
If I ever use other sources, I'll add them around the thread.
First, what are neurocognitive disorders?
In the most simple definition ever, neurocognitive disorders are a group of disorders that affect: memory; behavior; attention; learning; decision making; perception; movement; & language.
These disorders usually happen to older adults by longevity, but they can also be obtained by younger people. The causes can be for genetics, accidents or other unkwown causes.
The thing is, Chlotar had symptoms of these kind of disorders.
Of course we can't classify him with an specific disorder because the symptoms are quite vague, and also I don't have any kind of specialization on the area of neuropsychology.
Still, we can detect some of the symptoms and understand a bit better in what consists the curse of inmortality.
Along the quest, Dainsleif says that his memory wasn't fully functional due to his long period of existence; here we have a problem with memory, a symptom of ND.
There's a possibility that Dainsleif is actually presenting symptoms of dissociative disorder. People with this disorder tend to live in a constant state of alert, making them to not be totally present during their daily lives; this results in them not remembering important or regular stuff, because their mind were not completely present at the time.
This case can be seen in memories that are partially or totally forgotten.
I'm not really sure if Dainslei actually went through this disorder, but the possibility is there; it seems (not confirmed) that Dainsleif had to endure 500 years in constant danger of the abyss, making him be in a constant state of alert all the time.
If Chlotar is being serious about this, then here we can find two symptoms of ND: motor skills; & I would also add facial recognition because supposedly he wasn't able to recognize his son, but to be honest his son is a hillichurl & it's totally understandable that he can't distinguish between hillischurls.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
CONTEXT: On Twitter I wrote about making this an on-going thread, so that when we learn new information about the curse, I be able to add it into the thread.

Herald of Abadar: Lawgiver
CR 15
Lawful Neutral Gargantuan Construct
Inner Sea Gods, pg. 276
Well, I suppose we have to get this guy out of the way at some point, so why not put him at the start of Monitors and Misfits Month? It's especially fitting considering Abadar is the first core god that most people will see in just about every list of deities thanks to his name! The God of Civilization has done a lot for the mortal world and for the Perfect City of Axis alike, with the implacable Lawgiver being one of his simpler creations, made to enforce the peace of Axis and to act as Abadar's strongarm in the mortal world. Much like its fellow "boringly-named Construct in service to a Lawful god crafted for the express purpose of combat" the Grand Defender, the Lawgiver was not born, but made, crafted directly from the metals of Axis to serve as its defender and to hit Chaotic creatures with a huge hammer. It's got a lot in common with the GD!
Including being very boring. If you put the Hand of the Inheritor on one side of a Venn diagram and the Grand Defender on the other, the Lawgiver would be dead in the center right under the topic of 'statistically boring.' This isn't to say it's weak, far from it! But the Lawgiver is as every bit as stuffy, practical, and to-the-point as its creator, eschewing having any unique abilities or equipment or any bombastic spells in favor of a handful of generically useful spells and the aforementioned hammer. It doesn't even have an interesting personality, the book outright noting the thing almost never speaks, and when it does it's almost entirely passages from Abadar's holy books and manuals which are relevant to the current situation.
You can, perhaps, sense my frustration with and boredom towards Lawgiver here, a feeling that appears to be shared with the staff of Archives of Nethys, who haven't updated its statblock since its original release in Curse of the Crimson Throne: Seven Days to the Grave back in 2008, forcing me to keep Inner Sea Gods open in my other hand to make sure my data is accurate. As you may expect from such a forgettable entity, this won't be a particularly interesting article, but it is one that must be written to set the stage for the rest of the Heralds this month. So, let's take a look at the Big Man With A Hammer which, as we'll find out, is all it needs to smash most proteans and demons to paste.
Let's get the big hammer out of the way, first. The guy is stanced up in his picture for a reason! He's winding up for a big, two-handed slam with a +1 Axiomatic Warhammer sized for a Gargantuan creature, the heavy weapon dealing 4d6+10 (+2d6 vs Chaotic) damage upwards to four times a round and triple damage on a critical hit. Should it prize power over accuracy, the Lawgiver can use Power Attack to take a -4 penalty to its attack rolls for +8 to the damage, a trade it will typically make without hesitation against Chaotic Outsiders.
With a 20ft space and 20ft reach, Lawgiver shrouds entire battlefields in its threat radius, being one of the largest Heralds yet one of the few who can take its foes by surprise; it's not only capable of freezing completely stock-still and pretending to be a statue, but it can freely Change Shape into a large eagle to scout or hide from prying eyes, typically doing so when patrolling Axis to keep an eye out for trouble. It can also be considerably less subtle by turning into a two-headed golden eagle, which most sane beings would recognize as an omen that something very bad was about to happen to them if they don't turn and leave.
Even in its natural statue state the Lawgiver can fly 60ft a round, letting it get really goofy with its Full-Attacks if it wants, slamming its hammer down on its enemies from above while they're stuck on the ground, Medium-sized foes unable to fly made completely worthless by its superior reach... though this is used more often to catch up to flying enemies than it is to let it safely attack ground-bound foes, because every protean flies and they're by far Axis' most common enemy. And if someone's got magical flight to keep up with it, it really has nothing to say to that.
It's got a huge pile of spell-likes, more than almost any other Herald, but they're all for the good of the people of Axis and the mortals fighting alongside the Lawgiver than for the Herald itself. Just take a look at the healthcare you get on Axis' battlefield: Cure Serious Wounds, Neutralize Poison, Remove Blindness/Deafness, Remove Curse, Remove Disease, and finally Remove Paralysis, ALL of these spells usable 3/day! Paizo should have saved time and just given it Heal and Greater Restoration; mostly the same effect, less text.
You'll notice that every single one of those spells is useless to the Lawgiver, who--as a Construct--is immune to basically anything but HP damage. That spell list is exclusively for the mortals fighting alongside it and citizens harmed in the crossfires of the war on chaos! And speaking of Construct defenses, the Lawgiver is a fairly sturdy robot, all things considered: 34 AC, immunity to Acid and Electricity, 10 Cold and Fire Resistance, and 26 Spell Resistance overall. It's also got All-Around Vision to deny flanking bonuses and is immune to critical hits, and uniquely is also impervious to rust, something I assume many proteans hoping to erode the city of Axis found out all too late.
It's a pretty sturdy robot! Even if it is undecorated. Function over form, and all that; Abadar knew what he wanted when he built it, and it's no more than that. And that's more or less it!
You can sort of read more about it here; you'll need to use the d20pfsrd version to actually see its updated stats.

The Medicalization of Mental Health
By: Coco Zhao Medical Sociology - Spring 2025
Welcome to my final project for Medical Sociology! My topic is the medicalization of mental health — how normal human feelings started to be treated as illnesses. I’ll explore how this happened, the effects it has today, and why it’s important to understand.

Overview
Mental health has always been a part of human life, but the way we understand and talk about it has changed a lot over time. Today, many normal emotions and behaviors are treated like medical problems that need a diagnosis and sometimes even medication. This process is called medicalization, and it's had a huge impact on society.
Medicalization of mental health basically means that feelings like sadness, worry, or even anger are more likely to be seen as symptoms of a disorder instead of just part of being human. Sometimes this helps people get support they really need, but it can also cause problems, like overdiagnosis, unnecessary medication, and stigma.
Sociologists have studied how medicalization grew over the years. Some of the main drivers are changes in the healthcare system, the pharmaceutical industry, and cultural attitudes about mental illness. Also, updates to the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) have expanded the list of diagnosable conditions, which blurs the line between normal life struggles and medical disorders.
Understanding how mental health has been medicalized helps us ask important questions: Are we pathologizing everyday life? Are people getting better care — or just more labels? These are some of the issues I’ll explore through research in this project.
youtube
Evidence and Quotes
Peter Conrad (2005) explains, “Medicalization occurs when nonmedical problems become defined and treated as medical problems, usually in terms of illnesses or disorders” (p. 4). He also points out that pharmaceutical companies have played a growing role in driving this change.
Allan Horwitz (2007) says, “The expansion of psychiatric diagnoses has transformed a wide range of normal psychological experiences into mental disorders” (p. 213). This shows how the DSM changes have contributed to medicalizing normal human emotions.
Allan Horwitz (2025) adds, “We are facing a twenty-first-century mental health crisis where the boundaries between illness and everyday sadness are increasingly blurred.” His work emphasizes how society today struggles to draw clear lines between mental health and mental illness.
Bernice Pescosolido et al. (2010) found that, “Public beliefs have shifted significantly, viewing mental health conditions more like physical diseases, though stigma remains deeply rooted.” This shows how medicalization affects how people view mental illness, but doesn’t always erase discrimination.
Nikolas Rose (2007) argues that, “Mental health management has become part of a broader project of governing individuals’ inner lives through self-regulation and pharmaceutical means.” In other words, medicalization has become a tool for social control, not just healthcare.
Allen Frances (2013) warns, “Overdiagnosis leads to unnecessary treatments that can actually harm more people than they help, eroding public confidence in psychiatric practice.” His article critiques the DSM-5 for expanding the number of disorders without enough caution.

This graph showing the growth in mental health diagnoses over the past decades.
Conclusion
After exploring this research, it's clear that the medicalization of mental health is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it has helped many people recognize that they need support and has reduced some stigma about seeking help. On the other hand, it has also made it easy to label everyday struggles as disorders, sometimes pushing people into treatments they may not actually need.
The changes in the DSM, the influence of pharmaceutical companies, and the cultural push for quick solutions all play a role in this trend. While medicalization can validate real suffering, it also risks pathologizing the human experience.
As we move forward, it's important for both professionals and everyday people to find a balance — recognizing real mental health conditions without automatically labeling every tough moment as a disorder. Mental health awareness is crucial, but so is remembering that not everything painful is a pathology.
Thanks for checking out my project! Feel free to message me if you have any questions or thoughts about the topic! 🌟

happy adhd awareness month!
I'm not gonna lie, I saw posts that reminded me I've been meaning to do a self dx post for adhd since 2 minutes ago (when I realized I could channel my energy into something fun and exciting)
Anyways, this post comes in two parts:
ADHD diagnostic criteria a) literal criteria b) discussion of the meaning of various terms and how they relate to everyday experiences
ADHD community terms a) executive dysfunction b) neurodivergent c) hyperfocus/hyperfixation
bonus content: a) getting diagnosed b) stim toys and other accessibility aids c) accommodations d) bonus literature
diagnostic criteria

Changes made in the DSM-5 update:
Overall, the revised diagnostic criteria of the DSM-5 do not fundamentally change the concept of ADHD. However, the definition of the disorder has been updated, to more accurately characterise adults affected by ADHD. In all previous versions, ADHD was depicted as a disorder affecting mainly children, and to a lesser extent adolescents, but not adults. Hence, the wording of the 18 symptoms, and corresponding examples, was appropriate for assessing mainly school-age children. With the DSM-5, efforts have been made to more appropriately guide clinicians when assessing adult ADHD. These changes are based on two decades of research, which show that, although ADHD is a childhood-onset disorder, the core symptoms and resulting impairments can persist into adulthood, and continue to have a significant impact on everyday life. Box 1. The most important changes to the diagnostic criteria for ADHD in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition [bulleted list below]
ADHD grouped with other neurodevelopmental disorders, rather than with behavioural disorders
Subtypes changed to presentations
Age of onset increased from seven to 12 years
For adults and adolescents aged 17 and above, only five symptoms now required instead of the six needed for younger children
New symptom examples added
Updated definition of situational pervasiveness
Definitions of ADHD severity added
Autism spectrum disorder removed as an exclusion criterion
Mild ADHD is defined as having no, or only a few, symptoms in excess of those required for making the diagnosis. At the other end of the spectrum, severe ADHD requires either many symptoms in excess of the minimum required, several very severe present symptoms or a very high degree of social or occupational impairment. Individuals with moderate ADHD are between the two extremes, either in terms of the number of ADHD symptoms or the level of impairment. Although this initiative is praiseworthy, in that it defines terms that are already in use but lack specifications, the definitions are not particularly specific or operationalised. It could also be argued that adults with persisting ADHD may have a more severe form of the disorder; this has not been incorporated in the definitions of severity, despite the fact that adults with ADHD often have more problematic outcomes.

Discussion of terms:
Fidgets: picking at the skin around fingernails, tapping fingers/bouncing leg, tipping chairs, changing seating position frequently (more than once every ten minutes is too much), stimming, using a fidget toy, touching face, doodling, etc
Restlessness: the feeling of wanting to move, change activities, get up, or struggling to be satisfied by doing the same thing.
"driven by a motor" phrases: basically not wanting to take breaks because it'll be distracting, as far as I can tell. Busy as a bee, etc. Not wanting to (or being able to, or noticing) pause while speaking, not wanting to speak to someone while walking to something else despite being in no rush, etc.
Listening skills: paying attention without needing to doodle or imagining funny scenarios in your head the whole time. Might include being able to answer questions when asked about what they were listening to, responding when prompted, and looking in the person's general vicinity.
Unimportant stimuli: things not related to what someone *should* be focused on. Like if you're in school and you're distracted by a bus going by out the window, or if you get distracted by the sound the lights make while trying to focus on what the cashier is saying.
Daily activities: eating, sleeping, using the bathroom, doing chores (sweeping, laundry, shopping), getting dressed, etc
Completes schoolwork: includes answering every question you know the answer to, fully, and doing all the steps to questions as well as filling in required fields like name/date/etc.
Thoughtless mistakes: typos, spelling your name wrong, wrong fonts, forgetting to attach the bibliography, doing basic addition wrong on an algebra problem, etc.
In many of self-scorers there are questions like: "How often do you have problems remembering appointments or obligations?"
This is a very "but I have a system!" question. It might help to understand the neurotypical expeirence here.
Neurotypicals do not struggle to remember appointments, unless they have so many of them that it would be difficult for anyone to keep track of. If they have one appointment this week, they are not setting eight alarms or putting stickynotes everywhere. They say "oh! I have an appointment." And then go to that appointment. That's it. It doesn't take a lot of energy to remember. They don't have to repeat it in their head every chance they get to remember it. They haven't tried three different planner systems in the past year or struggle to stay with them. They don't religiously check google calendar every day. They simply know they have an appointment, and (assuming nothing weird like they're a secretary managing 9 clients or they got a cold) they remember it. All of these questions are pretty much like this. If you've had to struggle to do something most of the time and still fail, the answer is you have problems "most of the time." It's not the amount of times you have failed to remember.
ADHD community terms
Executive dysfunction
Not specific to ADHD, this term describes something that both people with depression and people with ADHD struggle with (though often for different reasons). People with ADHD tend to put off tasks until the last minute, struggle to finish things, and have a difficulty doing something when they need to. It can have a severe impact on someone with ADHD and their ability to do things in their daily life. Having executive dysfunction is one of the (many) reasons why ADHD is considered a disability.
One person (Dr. Russell Barkley) has a theory that ADHD should be reclassified to be a disorder of executive dysfunction, but aside from being a useful tool to understand ADHD it doesn't explain many of the other symptoms or why they are presented the way they are. In particular: it doesn't explain many of the concepts that folks with ADHD have developed to talk about our experiences with each other, and how folks with ADHD tend to have less issues with executive dysfunction in settings where openly expressing ADHD symptoms is perfectly fine. It also understands ADHD through the lens of a disorder that's wholly maladaptive and dysfunctional, an understanding not shared by everyone in the community.
Neurodivergent
This is a term coined primarily by the autistic community. It describes autism (and other types of neurodivergence, things that diverge from the norm/"the typical" aka neurotypical) outside of the idea of the medical model. [Autistics in particular has faced a lot of inhumane treatment in schools and by the psychiatric system under abusive (and legal) things like ABA (applied behavioral analysis) and shock therapy. Autistics have fought for the right to openly stim, to not make eye contact, and to communicate while being non-speaking for decades. This has pushed back against the medicalization of autism, and the process of diagnosis not involving autistics in the creation of the criteria or what treatments (if any) should be approved for autistics.] This overall philosophy promotes the idea that neurodivergent people should not be stigmatized, and should exist as equal members of society regardless of how their symptoms present.
People with ADHD were early adopters of this concept (maybe because of the high rates of comobidity of autism and adhd). As a result, many of the concepts feature heavily in the language and strategies for ADHD- especially online. Along with alternative methods of orgnization (many small trash cans, two laundry bins, etc), you'll often find people with ADHD discussing stim toys and things like that.
Hyperfocus/hyperfixation
Hyperfocus describes one aspect of difficulty regulating focus. Basically: during hyperfocus a person struggles to pay attention to things outside of the thing that's taking up their attention.
More specifically they lose awareness of signals like hunger, exhaustion, the need to pee, and can even struggle to hear someone calling for their attention. If they do try to stop focusing on the thing they're focused on, they might still struggle to pay attention- even as they try to hold a conversation or go make a meal, they might be distracted by thoughts about the thing they were focused on before. This might lead to doing things incorrectly (like putting on shoes without socks or putting toothpaste in the freezer). With such acute focus someone with adhd can create art quickly with a lot of detail, discover a lot of information on a topic, and even learn new practical skills. It can also provide a lot of joy and accomplishment to someone, and improve self confidence.
A hyperfixation is the subject of hyperfocus, either once (hours) or over longer period of time (weeks, months, years). It can be anything from abstract (like a favorite subject) to specific and grounded in reality (like a hobby), or broad (a time period) to specific (a particular beetle).
Hyperfixation was a term coined by the ADHD community to describe an experience that wasn't described in the medical literature about us that needed terminology. Hyperfocus is also an experience that is really important to folks with ADHD because it's often wrapped up in the "twice exceptional" narrative many people experience- having both amazing talents and terrible grades in subjects that don't interest them. On top of that, neurotypical adults treat kids with ADHD hyperfocusing as doing something wrong and punish them, when what they're doing is perfectly fine and isn't hurting anyone. A greater understanding of this concept has helped people work with how their mind works, rather than try to resist it and be "normal."
Bonus content
Getting diagnosed
fill out self scorers
interview your family and teachers with parent/teacher scorers (optional)
get you information together, like insurance, debit, and credit card information. They will ask you for your full name, your date of birth, your insurance information, any pre-existing conditions, your availability
find a local low/no-cost neuropsych testing facility near you. If you're currently in school, you're in luck! Many will refer you out to a low/no-cost testing facility. (Either way, the result is the same: these can be universities teaching students studying neuro-psychiatry, state sponsored programs, and more. Here's a solid comprehensive guide on getting low cost testing, as well as managing the costs associated with ADHD).
make it known that you would like to be assessed for ADHD to have it ruled out. That is the specific phrasing that you should use with everyone- do not claim you think you have anything, simply that you're concerned and wish to be assessed. Talk to your therapist, your parents, your pcp, your teacher- whoever it makes sense to contact, based on your prior research. If you were unable to find anything, then contacting the people who might have better access to information like your therapist or teacher would be best. (If you're not yet in therapy, getting into therapy would be a good idea.)
If all else fails, contact your insurance (if you have it). Testing can cost a lot of money and might not be worth the expense. You're still welcome in the ADHD community regardless of being diagnosed or not.
If you go to get assessed, here's what to expect:
you will likely have to fill out self scorers for lots of things, including things that don't apply to your situation like mood disorder evaluations to rule of depression. Your answers on these should not affect how you will be diagnosed with ADHD.
there will be a lot of weird things in full neuropsych evaluations, like repeating words back to them, or playing with blocks, or drawing shapes
they will pay attention to how you act in the room, so don't resist the impulse to fidget and feel free to ask to get up or take a break after an exercise
it may last under sixty minutes, but with a student it could take longer. I have 4+ hour sessions twice a week for a month, but not everyone has such an extreme experience (they had last minute additions that went beyond ADHD testing).
Tips for the day of testing:
do not bring your best self. Leave your best self at home. They need to see you at your usual or your worst to make an accurate assessment.
bring water. You will be talking a lot.
some information can help, like recent test performance and last semester teacher comments
comfortable clothing is best. T-shirt and jeans are totally fine.
prepare to be totally out of it when you leave, by bringing a snack or having someone you trust pick you up. It's mentally exhausting and makes you do all the things you avoid because they suck.
A neuropsych (or any type of ADHD evaluation) can help you get access to things you might not normally get, like medication (stimulants, typically), accommodations, and recommendations to your therapist about what to work on. It also can be shared with doctors and other therapists in the future so you don't have to worry about someone questioning your need for whatever it is they helped you get in the first place (like accommodations, etc).
Accommodations
In order to request accommodations through most colleges, you need a letter from a therapist of some kind requesting an accommodation in writing. Getting diagnosed for ADHD helps with this. Some accommodations you can request include:
time and a half on tests and quizzes
extensions of papers and projects
alternative assignments (i.e. oral exam over essays, different topics, etc)
excused absences
a notetaker
audio and/or video recordings of lectures
laptops in classes that don't ordinarily allow laptops
snacks in classes that don't ordinarily allow snacks (unless it poses a safety hazard, like in labs)
stim toys in class
and more
Literature
books on adhd:
You Mean I’m not Lazy, Stupid, or Crazy?!
Smart but Scattered Guide to ADHD

*looks at the clock* oh god it's 7 p.m. I've been trapped in making-a-long-post hell for four plus hours OTL but I'm finally free.
Anyway, I hope this helps and feel free to DM me if you want to know more. I got diagnosed with ADHD (combined type) back in late 2017 so I'm happy to talk about that with anyone who might be considering going through testing.

Lumilla Lopes, @ludylops Post about Forever in English, using English translate
(I will not be adding her links and videos. If you want to see that, you can go on her twitter, here is the link- https://twitter.com/ludylops/status/1744171674378113415)
(Sorry if I messed up by forgetting to translate a tweet)
Hi, I'm 35 years old, I'm a data scientist and I decided to compile a giant thread about the accusation of p3dof1lia against a 27 year old streamer who lives Minecraft. Be patient as there is a lot of information here, complex definitions and delicate topics. The Forever Affair.
I'm a woman, I work in development and data, I make a living doing complex and objective research in the areas of crypto and marketing, environments that I consider very dangerous and in need of more education.
I've loved games since the Pentium 166 and Atari. I've been following the ecosystem for years
First of all, I feel so sorry for the young people who are experiencing so many triggers from this. I see fandom members devastated, and not knowing how to act. It saddens me very much.
I hope with this thread to give you some warmth and direction, through information and personal experiences.
I've been following QSMP since Cellbit joined, and today I only watch it from POV@oibagi(o/ Jorges) and some lore summary videos. I think the context is enough for now. Well, let's go.
Forever is not p3dof1lo. But it's not right either.
Calm down, breathe, follow the thread 👇
I mean, I can't even say that, because I'm not a psychiatrist and much less had the opportunity to talk to and analyze the boy.
For the same reason, no one can say otherwise, so he cannot receive this diagnosis until a doctor analyzes and diagnoses him.
Come, follow 👇
This issue is extremely complex among experts in both the medical and legal fields, so be aware that communities are fighting in a highly minefield with little chance of delivering a positive outcome from all of this.
TRIGGER ALERT
Therefore, I will try to update you as neutrally as possible on what these definitions are today.
📝 What is P3dof1lia?
This word has undergone several changes and classifications over the years. Currently, we must first separate crime from psychiatric disorder.
P3dof1lo Disorder
According to the most recent studies (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, DSM-5), P3dof1lo Disorder is characterized by recurrent and intense fantasies, desires or sexual acts involving children (usually aged 13 or younger).
Because 13 years old? This is where puberty happens, the biological and physiological transition from our child body to a more adult phase. Girls start to develop breasts, menstruate, and boys are proud of their first hairs and their voices become more dysregulated than autotune
However, dear padawans, biology is not an exact science, so entering puberty is not like the evolution of a Pokémon. It can happen at 11, at 15, and it's a process. And this 13-year average estimate is changing over the years.
Studies indicate that, in the 19th century, this number was between 15 and 17 years old, and today we have more and more cases of earlier puberty. And why am I beating around the bush so much on this subject?
Let's go back to the definition of the Disorder. The catch is: the definition of a child is not universal and that is why it causes so much confusion. In fact, the current age of those involved and the complexity of the context are extremely important.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, a child is a “human being in the phase of childhood, from birth to puberty”. Puberty is currently defined at around 13 years of age, but is not exact and varies with the years.
And that is why the age of majority in many countries is 18 years old.
The terms “child” to define P3dophilia Disorder and legal majority are not the same. That is why, in Brazil and in several other countries that are signatories to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, we adopt the term “child and adolescent”, as in our Child and Adolescent Statute, also from 1990.
And here we have 11 years being the divider.
Now, go back to the leaked Forever prints and conversations. There is, to date, no indication that Forever has a disorder that makes him feel constant sexual desires for pre-pubescent children.
This is a fact. But did he commit any crime? There is no “crime of pedof1li4”, just as there is no “crime of ADHD” or “crime of sadism” (sadomasochism is considered a paraphilia, as is pedophilia).
So what crimes are foreseen related to this topic?
In the Brazilian criminal code we have:
👉 The 3rd rape of Vulnerable
(Remember that this definition was only included in 2009. At that time I was already in college, that is, all these definitions are still very recent and cause a lot of confusion even among experts.)
👉 Child Pornography
"Present, produce, sell, provide, disseminate or publish, through any means of communication, including the world wide web or the internet, photographs or images containing pornography, or scenes of explicit sex involving children or adolescents."
Leaving the field of crimes against children and adolescents, we still have:
👉 S3xual Harassment
Everything that has been released about Forever so far does not seem to fit into any of the crimes presented.
But does this mean that the attitude he had in 2016/2017 is morally correct?
No. But history is made to change the future, not the past
Take a test for me: ask your parents what gender identity issues were like when they were younger. Or what are neutral pronouns.
Why do you think that so many people are only coming out now?
If we were to condemn all past attitudes by the morals of the present, from the millennials behind, everyone would be cancelled. And you will be canceled in a few years too.
History is made for us to learn from it and change the future.
Why do we subject ourselves to entering a history classroom and reading about slavery, Nazism, racism, machismo? To do different in the future.
But the past is in the past. New laws cannot apply to attitudes made before their conception. Nor moral values.
What we colloquially call today “pedof1li4” is often not related to psychiatric disorder but rather to the result of a patriarchal culture where women need to be much younger than men.
Therefore, the 20, 21 year old Forever was not supposedly expressing a sexual desire for pre-pubescent children, but rather replicating and continuing an ancient culture where women mature much earlier than men.
Therefore, a 15-year-old girl would be on equal terms playing and trash talking with a 21-year-old adult.
However, today we know that this is a lie and the trauma it causes women.
But what's wrong?
The definition of “harassment” may need to be updated.
In Brazilian legislation, Sexual Harassment is applied in an employment context, such as a boss who makes sexual jokes to an intern, and she does not defend herself for fear of losing her job.
However, I have been observing that, with the emergence of the internet and social networks, teen idols are increasingly closer to their fans.
The influence and power that an idol can represent for their teenage fans is comparable to that of a boss in the workplace.
Teenagers harass idols. They send nudes on Instagram. And knowing how to deal with this is still something very new, as the idols are also new.
It is in this fertile field of uncertainty that the cancellation gains strength, and it hinders this debate rather than helping it.
The dangers of cancellation When I see comments about “the Order Paranormal community is toxic, the QSMP community is toxic, the community canceled Jão again” I don't even understand where these discussions are taking place.
In the past, communities were formed in centralized environments, such as forums and chats.
I found out it was on Twitter and Tiktok. Which leads me to the question: how on earth does a Twitter community exist? Twitter even has a recent community tool, but it is still underused.
All the thousands of information and opinions on the subject pop up in millions randomly in each person's feed depending on what the algorithm chooses for them. It is almost impossible to build a chronology or logical line of facts posed by fakes that go viral from time to time.
And lost millennial as I am, so are journalists, advertisers, legal advisors and all the professionals who have the sad task of trying to extract as much information as possible from this chaotic world and take some action with their team of influencers or clients. Poor boomer judges who have to deal with cybercrime cases. Justice is slow. However, Twitter is too fast. Judge and demand action immediately.
At the time of this thread, Forever has already lost followers and mentions on pages, risking losing projects.
What we have now are creators giving up on their projects, abandoning their communities, all because we still don't know how to deal with the social and technological changes that are getting faster every day. Misinformation spreads faster than information.
Of crimes against honor
If being a young asshole in the past is not a crime, imputing false crimes and unfairly attacking a person's honor is. In legislation we have 3 crimes associated with honor: Slander, defamation and insult.
Anonymous profile does not save.
Each generation has something to teach, but also to learn from the previous one. I saw the internet grow.
This isn't nostalgic talk about “ICQ was still good”. Crosses. But I lived the world without the internet, and with the internet.
Returning to my personal perspective, I started an engineering course in 2007.
There were only 2 women in the room. Not only did I experience all kinds of machismo and harassment, I also practiced a lot of female rivalry. And homophobia. Several of these women are my best friends today.
Many of them I don't even want to see painted gold, but many of my colleagues who shared photos of me in bikinis when WhatsApp came out are my best friends today.
As? IM crazy? Uninformed? No.
As time went by, I was able to see what was a portrait of a sick society, and what was an individual character. Together, as friends, we discussed a lot. We fight. We touch wounds. We learn.
Some of the college “catchers” and bullies even took on a new sexuality when they came to terms with themselves, and saw a safer world emerging. We eliminated from our vocabulary expressions such as “viadinho”, “mute servant”, “samba do creole doido”.
We learn to accept the consequences of our actions. Therefore, those who remained after this whole process were worth taking for life.
But this all takes time. Search. Study. Anonymity allows this.
However, these young public figures are being pressured to go through this process in public, and without time.
They need to post a mature statement within minutes, as mentions accumulate on Twitter.

LGBTQ advocates in Peru protested in the capital city of Lima last week after the Health Ministry issued a new law that deemed transgender people as having “mental health problems.”
The supreme decree, signed by Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and published May 10, updated the ministry’s list of insurable mental health conditions to include “transexualism,” “gender identity disorders” and “cross-dressing.”
In 2019, the World Health Organization redefined its terms on gender identity-related health, moving conditions of “gender incongruence” out of being defined as “mental and behavioral disorders” and into the “conditions related to sexual health” category.
“This reflects current knowledge that trans-related and gender diverse identities are not conditions of mental ill-health, and that classifying them as such can cause enormous stigma,” the guidance reads.
On May 11, the Peruvian Health Ministry released a statement, insisting that the update is to ensure comprehensive mental health interventions.
“The ministry ratifies its position that gender and sexual diversity are not diseases.” it stated. “In this framework, we express our respect for gender identities, as well as our rejection of the stigmatization of sexual diversity in the country.”
Despite this, the ministry reiterated that the update to the country’s Essential Health Insurance Plan will remain in force.
After the statement was issued, a collective of more than 60 national LGBTQ organizations staged a protest Friday in front of the ministry’s headquarters in Lima.
The protest coincided with the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, which is celebrated annually May 17.
The organizations said in a joint statement that the decree perpetuates “an archaic vision” that makes transgender people targets of aggression.
“The adoption of such a decree constitutes a serious setback in terms of our rights and in the recognition of our dignity as individuals,” the statement continues. “This measure not only reflects a lack of understanding and respect for sexual and gender diversity, but also has devastating consequences for our lives.”
Transformar, a trans-feminist Peruvian organization, urged the ministry to reconsider the decree, and “adopt measures that respect and promote inclusive public policies.”
“This is not only a setback in terms of human rights and recognition of diversity, but it also opens the door to aberrant practices such as conversion therapies,” Collective Pride March, another Lima-based rights group, said in a statement. “Gender identity is not a disease, it is part of human diversity and must be respected and protected as such.”
In its statement, the Health Ministry clarified that sexual orientation and gender identity do not constitute health disorders, and individuals should not be subjected to treatments such as conversion therapy.
On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., said that he would be working directly with the State Department to “push back on this direct attack on LGBTQ+ Peruvians,” because the measure “moves Peru backward.”
“As a gay Peruvian-American and the first Peruvian American to serve in Congress, it’s clear to me the decision by the Boluarte administration and the right-wing Congress to attack and label trans and intersex Peruvians as ‘mentally ill’ is discriminatory, dangerous and shameful,” he said.
In the United States, the American Psychiatric Association has used the terminology “gender dysphoria” in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders since 2013 — replacing “gender identity disorder” — focusing on the distress related to transgender people’s experiences, rather than on the identities themselves.
