on March 25th 1978, British music magazine Sounds released an issue that highlighted the anti-National Front (England's fascist party that was gaining a scary amount of influence back in the late 70s) stances of several musicians who were popular with teenagers and young adults at the time. this was part of an organized effort to steer young people away from the increasingly popular far right
the infamous cover shows several musicians with a deported stamp over their faces as a reference to the National Front's desire to deport any 'non-English' people back to their 'homelands'. as you can see, most of the rockers on the cover are black or otherwise non-white but JJ Burnel (who's parents are French), Paul Simonon (who's father is Belgian), and Ari Up (who's a German immigrant) are also on the list. it's a clear warning to white readers that the National Front is everyone's problem
'The fundamental difference is that the Left are attacking a system, whereas the National Front are attacking people.'
- Tom Robinson
'It's rubbish to say you can't do anything. Punk proved that. You have the power, so take it [...] You can't stand back apathetically.'
- Johnny Rotten
'If they come with fire, we'll have hotter fire. If they come with water, we'll drown them [...] but the real threat comes from Margret Thatcher and the Tory party.'
- Linton Kwesi Johnson
on April 30th 1978, Rock Against Racism organized a large festival to promote racial solidarity. 100,000 people joined the event and several musicians interviewed for this Sounds issue played concerts

Which Banned Books Have I Read In My Lifetime?
This week is Banned Books Week here in the US and I thought I would share which banned books I have read from my childhood all the way up to college.
For those of you who don't know according to bannedbooksweek.com:
"Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular."
Many of these books have been banned due to odd reasons but the more common that I have seen are religion, race, gender, LGBTQ+, and the depiction of police. The last one is has been more common in recent years.
This is going to be a list in no particular order. Some of you may even recognize many of these titles. From children's books to adult books.
Here we go!
Childen's Books
Curtis, Christopher Paul. The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963
Dahl, Roald. James and the Giant Peach
Hanford, Martin. Where’s Waldo?
Park, Barbara. Junie B. Jones
Pullman, Philip. His Dark Materials series
Snyder, Zilpha Keatley. The Egypt Game
Taylor, Mildred D. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Blume, Judy. Deenie
Blume, Judy. Forever
Blume, Judy. Here’s to You, Rachel Robinson
Blume, Judy. Tiger Eyes
Young Adult Books, books that are read in grades 5-12, or books that I have read in college
Bradbury, Ray. Fahrenheit 451
Collins, Suzanne. The Hunger Games Trilogy
Ellison, Ralph. Invisible Man
Green, John. Looking for Alaska
Green, John. Paper Towns
Hinton, S.E. The Outsiders
Lee, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird
Meyer, Michael, ed. Bedford Introduction to Literature
Rowell, Rainbow. Eleanor & Park
Salinger, J.D. The Catcher in the Rye
Satrapi, Marjane. Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood
Shakespeare, William. Romeo and Juliet (No Fear Shakespeare)
Shusterman, Neal. Unwind
Steinbeck, John. The Grapes of Wrath
Steinbeck, John. Of Mice and Men
The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding
Animal Farm, by George Orwell
As I Lay Dying, by William Faulkner
A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway
The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
The Diary of a Girl by Anne Frank
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
The Handmaid's Tale by Margret Atwood
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
The Canterberry Tales by Chaucer
Fairy Tail (Series) by Hiro Mashima
Now, are there probably more books? Yes, but these are the ones on the website and their lists are based on data they collect throughout the year from school districts and public libraries.
But these are the ones I've read and my ultimate goal is to read 90% of the books that have been banned.
So my question to you is: How many banned books have you read?

Environmental Portrait Evaluation
9th December 2020
What was the project theme and what did you think of it?
The theme for our second brief for folio one was Environmental Portarit and i was looking forward to start working on the project because i already had a clear idea about who i wanted to shoot and the environment in which he often surrounds himself in.
I chose to shoot my stepdad in his newly build Motorbike Shed working on maintaining his black coloured Triumph Streetfighter Motorcycle, I wanted to include close ups of him working on the bike along with a portrait of my stepdad within the shed.
The environment itself also has a strong source of artifical lighting which i tought would be ideal for my final images.
What part of the project did you enjoy the most/found most interesting? (making the photographs, Optimising images? Printing?)
What i enjoyed the most was the Shooting process with my stepdad in the shed, i originally planned to shoot him working on his motorbike but he plans to remove the alloy wheels from his Ford Fiesta and spray paint them so i made alternitaves to shoot the spray paint process step by step.
What new techniques have you experienced?
throughout the project i experienced new ways of composing my shots within my chosen environment.
i also experiemented with different ways of optimising my final photographs using both Adobe Lightroom and Bridge.
I was also introduced to Flipsnack which is a free editorial site used to create layouts for brocures, catalogs and magazines, this is what was used to create the Zine layout of our final four images.
What technique would you like to develop further?
I have noticed that other students have chosen to present their four final images onto an A3 or A4 canvas so in i would like to develop my techniques in placing my images onto a canvas as part of my image presentation and in preperation for my final print outs.
I created canvas layouts quite a lot for NQ folio 1 last year but due to the Covid 19 situation and our first national lockdown took place back in march this year i was unable to print anything so i have became a bit rusty on the process of making one.
What photographers did you reaserch throughout the project?
As part of my reaserch on historical photographers i looked at Oscar Mazorallis photographs of Glasgow and the people who worked within the heavy industry of the City during the 20th Century.
I also discovered a new historical documentary photographer called Margaret Bourne White she was an american photographer who became known as the first to depict the sovet industry during the union’s five year plan.
The work that i was particularly drawn to was Margret’s 1950s portraits of Black miners within the Robinson deep Gold Mine in south africa.
For my contempoary reaserch i looked at industrial based photography and automotive photography on pintrest but i could not find the names of any photgraphers who shot the images that i was inspired by.
How have they influenced your photographs?
I feel like a lot of the stuff i looked at on pintrest as part of my contempoary reasech has influenced my final images the most in terms of the enviroment itself.
I also feel that the subjects that were in the photographs i looked at for my reaserch are also very similar to the person i chose to shoot for my final environmental images which was my Stepdad, they all work within very industrial based environments.
My stepdad is an experienced lorry driver of large storage containers so he operates heavy machines on a daily bases.
What do you feel is the most sucessful part of your project and why?
The most sucsessful part was the shoot itself i had to wait quite a bit before i could get round to making my final images due to my stepdad working full time.
i felt that the shoot was very structured in terms of my idea and the process itself, i shot a step by step process of spray painting an alloy wheel with acrylic spray paint.
I photographed my stepdad cleaning and sanding down the unimproved alloy wheel and then applying up to three coating of silver acrylic spary paint.
Because the spray paint had a strong odor the shoot took quite a while to complete because myself and my stepdad had to leave the shed everytime he applied another coat of paint onto the wheel rim.
Overall i think that the shoot was very sucsessful.
Did you encounter any problems in your project?
while i was carriying out the risk assesment and the location i encountered a lot of risks within my chosen environment, there was a lack of space for my to set up my photography equipment for the day of shooting so i came to a decision that i may have to remove alot of the stuff from the shed. However on the day of the shoot the motorbike that i originally planned to shoot my stepdad working on was moved to the back of the shed to make room for the wheel to be painted.
I was having trouble deciding which lens to use shoot. I originally borrowed a set of 55 - 250mm zoom lens from the college but realised that if i went ahead with the shoot using this set of lens then the shots would be far too tight into the subject and i would have to shoot from outside in order to get more of the environment in frame.
I swapped the 55 - 250mm lens for a set of Sigma 17 - 50mm lens which turned out to be a much better choice of lens for the final shoot.
How did you learn from them and how did you effect your final images?
Using the Sigma lens for my final shots made a huge difference in how much i was able to get in frame.
I was able to shoot my subject in full length and create a much greater sense of the environment itself.
What would you do differently given the chance to complete the project again?
A couple of days after my final shoot for the brief i was given feedback by my tutor and he suggested that it may have been worth including shots of my stepdad working with in the shed but shot form the outside showing the exterior of the shed so that there is a more of a sense of the Environment.
I think would also borrow a camera from the college as well as a set of lens, i currently own a Canon EOS 30D semi professional camera and i find that when i take images using this type of camera it does not give you the best image quality so i would consider borrowing a newer camera such as an EOS 6D.
Discuss any technical issues with your final images? (focus, sharpness, detail, exposure, highlight/shadow)
Due to the lighting in the environment i had to constantly adjust my ISO settings which resulted in a series of noisy images.
Some of my images where my stepdad is seen applying the paint ended up being out of focus.
Going Deeper; if you were asked to complete a project using this technique what would you do? What new ideas would you have? This may be explained as a visual, a drawing, sketch, photograph ... you decide how you present this section
I would like to shoot someone within an industrial based working Environment it would be a family member who runs a soft furnishings factory in the Parkhead district of Glasgow i already know a lot about the factory and its surroundings because i used to work in it during my school holidays.

The Cincinnati Kid - Best Poker Movie
There have been several movies where poker has been a central part of the plot of the movie, but I don't think any one of them better captures the feel of a good poker game than this one. Steve McQueen plays the 'kid' in the title, an up and coming young poker star in New Orleans, and excitement is brewing about a big backroom game between him and the reigning 'grand old man' of the game (Edward G Robinson, excellent as always). There are the inevitable side wagers going on, and a rich slimeball (Rip Torn) wants to see the kid win it all, and will do anything to make sure that happens, including paying one of the dealers (Karl Malden) to deal the kid a little 'help' on crucial hands. Mix in some romantic entanglements (two great 'eye candy' actresses, Ann-Margaret and Tuesday Weld) and you've got a nice entertaining movie with some colorful characters to keep the claustrophobic setting (most of it takes place in a hotel room) from becoming too tiresome.
some other good 'poker' movies: "House of Games", "The Odd Couple", "Kaleidescope", "Rounders"
3.5 stars out of 5
Released 1965, First Viewing April 1986 with a few revisits

A Letter Home (story i wrote for creative writing class)
In a simple suburb in New York state, a single house shakes and thunders, disrupting its neighbors and causing distress throughout. Mothers warn their children of the pests that live there, and fathers encourage their sons to deface the house. The father of the house has cycled through twelve jobs, and the mother of the house has been abandoned by her friends. They’ve had enough- they’re going to deal with their problem child.
The father’s voice booms through the house, “Sophie! Get down here!”
Sophie, the eldest child in the house, races to the sitting room where her father waits.
“Yes, father?” She asks, ever polite.
“Your mother and I love you dearly, I give you a place to place to live, your mother cooks you meals and buys you clothes, and how do you repay us? By sneaking off and kissing girls!”
“Father, it was one time! At a church barbecue! Alexander and James had already snuck off to harass old lady Margret like they always do!”
“That’s what boys do! AS for you, Sophie, you can either get yourself a boyfriend, or get out of this house.”
A veil of silence fell, with only breaths and the incessant ticking of a grandfather clock piercing it.
“I guess I’m leaving then.”
“I guess you are,” the father replies as he sighs. “You have half an hour to grab and pack your things. Go,” he says. “Go!”
Sophie scurries back up to her room. Sorting through mismatched clothes and trinkets, seeing what does and doesn’t fit in her tote bag and handbag, thoughts race through he4r mind. She only ever got average grades in school, and she isn’t exactly the prettiest girl. Who would hire a women like that in 1962?
“Your half an hour is up!”
Sophie takes a deep breath, and makes her way to the foyer, where her father waits. He shoves a 100 dollar bill into her bag, and says nothing. She looks at him, and misses he looks at the wall.
“Goodbye,” she says.
Sophie walks to the train station, buying a ticket to New York City, and sets off to the unknown. Her arrival is met with looks from strangers, wary of a woman travelling on her own. She keeps her eyes on job opportunities, while she receives inappropriate compliments. Finding an apartment in a less than fortunate neighbourhood that she can easily afford, and soon finding a job as a secretary for a brand new newspaper office. The other secretaries happy to include her any post-work get-togethers.
“Hey, Sophie,” One of the other secretaries says one day, “I think you’d get along really well with my cousin, Donna, Donna Lockhart.”
“Oh, cool,” Sophie replies.
“Yeah, by the time you get off work she should also be getting off work at the barber shop on 5th avenue.”
Sohie writes home about the meeting.
“Dear father,
I know it’s been a while since we last spoke, and I know you told me to never speak to you again, but I had to say something to someone, and you used to be my best friend.
On August 17th, 1962, I met an angel while walking on 5th avenue.. She lit up the world around us, like how Alexander, James, and I used to spend hours watching the tv while mother screamed at us to eat dinner and you only shook your head disapprovingly. I felt like a dumbbell was pressing down on my lungs, like the air had turned to molasses, like she was the only thing that existed. Father, is this how you felt when you met mother? Like she was the treasure you had been searching for your whole life? Like everything in you life had come to this moment? Is mother your everything, father? I hope so. I hope Alexander and James feel this way about someone, someday.
Dearest father, I hope this letter finds you well, and I hope you are comforted to know that I have found all the light in this world I needed to find.
Sincerely, Sophie Robinson.
P.S. I do hope you are happy and healthy, father.”
There is no reply.
Sophie and Donna meet up almost every day from then on, often going out for coffee or tea, or going to see movies at the local theatre. Unfortunately, Donna’s boss fires her for seemingly no reason, and the newspaper Sophie works for goes bankrupt. As rent prices rise, and no one’s hiring, Sophie finds herself homeless with only one door she can knock on.
“Hey, Donna,” she says sheepishly when the door opens.
“What’s up? What do you need?” Donna answers.
Sophie sighs awkwardly. “I got evicted for not paying rent on time, and now I’ve got nowhere to go, I don’t know if you know of anyone I can stay with or-”
“Oh my god, you can stay with me!" Donna interrupts. "I got a job as a switchboard operator, so I've got money to spare."
Sophie smiles. "Thank you."
Finally with a stable house situation again, Sophie finds another job, this time as a secretary for an accounting firm. Life with Donna is far better than life alone, and eventually the two decide to buy a home together. It's a beautiful little bungalow just outside New York City, and while it might not have a white picket fence, Sophie does give it a flower bed, growing roses and tulips and hydrangeas. The final addition to their home is a German shepherd.
It's a cold November morning, all three household members curl up by the fireplace, when Sophie picks up a pen again.
"Dear Father,
You never answered my last letter, and I don't know if you're going to answer this one either, but I figured I ought to write you anyway. I do hope you're doing well father, just as well as I am. Remember that angel I spoke of in my previous letter? We live together now. I do miss you father, perhaps one day we can meet up again. I think you'd like my dog, her name is Sappho. Donna, my angel, named her. I think it's a beautiful name. How are Alexander and James? And how is mother?
Sincerely, Sophie Lockhart."
